make a day of it December 15 Mount Gambier & District Cricket Association One Day Cup Final - South Gambier v North Gambier (Frew Park) 1pm start.

LOCAL Bringing For the first time in 50 years there is a book that showcases – through captivating stories and vivid images – what makes a place like Robe so special. Almost An Island: The Story of Robe is the latest offering from former local Liz Harfull and the brainchild of Angela Tolley, whose family owned the Robe Hotel for 90 years. It is a history book but by no means a conventional one. For a small place, tucked away on South Australia’s rugged Limestone Coast, the village of Robe has played a remarkable role in history. In what turned out to be a brief, golden heyday as one of southern Australia’s busiest ports, during the 1850s it witnessed fine clipper ships bound for London with

the past to life

loads of wool, the arrival of thousands of Chinese on their way to the Victorian goldfields, and the hijinks of partying pastoralists. Fifty years later Robe cast off the doldrums to reinvent itself as a seaside health resort, lauded for its natural beauty, and the beneficial qualities of its cooling sea breezes and salt waters. And fifty years after that, the first surfers arrived, establishing one of the world’s oldest continuous surfing competitions. Almost an Island: The Story of Robe brings together stories, memories and images gathered by generations of residents and holidaymakers. Here you will find pioneering settlers and aviators, fishermen braving wild seas in small

wooden boats, famous painters and poets, chefs and winemakers,. Liz Harfull (pictured left) is passionate about telling the stories of rural Australia. The bestselling author grew up on a small farm near Mount Gambier, and decided to become a writer when she was only eight or nine years old, encouraged by Robe author, the late Kathleen Bermingham. Today Liz lives in the Adelaide Hills where she juggles her writing career with voluntary duties on a national council representing Australia’s rural journalists and

communicators. Liz is also the author of two bestselling books, The Blue Ribbon Cookbook (Wakefield Press) and Women of the Land (Allen & Unwin). The book is being launched this Sunday at the Robe Institute, Smillie Street, Robe from 2-4.30pm. Please RSVP to Robe Disitrct Council on (08)8768 2003 for catering purposes. See the upcoming summer edition of Southern Life for a feature story on the coming together of this exciting publication.

cancer centre financial windfall Westvic Staffing Solutions last week added its support to the Peter’s Project fund-raising appeal with a $15,000 donation. The funding is being provided through the Westvic Staffing Solutions Foundation which is celebrating its 10th anniversary. Over that time it has distributed many hundreds of thousands of dollars to the south-west community. The $15,000 allocation is the largest single donation made by the foundation. The Peter’s Project appeal aims to raise $5 million toward the building of an Integrated Cancer Care Centre in Warrnambool. The proposed cancer care centre will provide much needed radiotherapy treatment, various cancer services and support to people with cancer in a friendly and welcoming environment.

STUNNING HOME OFFERS STYLE, COMFORT & SPACE

79 Banksia Road, Millicent

$428,000

A winding avenue of golden elms leads you to a stunning home designed by Chapman Herbert Architects. The 7 year old rendered limestone home sits within park like grounds on 1.22 hectares. With an emphasis on space and light, the home has been designed to capture the winter sun in virtually every room and most impressively is the central living area of the home which has large expanses of glass providing incredible natural light, warmth and 180 degree views of the property. Beyond the glass, an alfresco dining area is sheltered by blinds on the westerly side and has stylish lights for night time entertaining. The open plan kitchen, meals and family area is spacious and dynamic. A state of the art entertainer’s kitchen features granite benches, glass splashbacks and quality European stainless appliances and an abundance of storage including walk in pantry, wine storage and concealed breakfast storage. The island bench is conveniently equipped with power points and room for stools for casual dining. Nearby is an entrance to the home from the double garage which is under the main roof and has an automatic roller door. The home is serviced by ducted reverse cycle air conditioning. All four bedrooms are generous, the main with walk in robe and sparkling en suite, the other three all with close access to the main bathroom which has a separate vanity area, separate toilet and an abundance of light flows through glass bricks in the shower/bath room. Rainwater is collected from the house roof and the roof of the 4 bay shed of approximately 17000 gallons. The lawns are automatically watered from a bore. Playground equipment of cubby, trampoline and plane will stay at the property for the new owner’s enjoyment.

LOCAL Tertiary

scholarships on offer

South East students will have the opportunity to kick start their future education with the launch of Bendigo and Adelaide Bank’s largest ever scholarship program. As part of the 2014 scholarship program, Mount Gambier & District Community Bank® Branch will support an academically capable local student who may experience challenges with accessing tertiary study. This will be the second year that a scholarship has been awarded. Last year’s Mount Gambier & District Community Bank® Branch Scholarship supported local student Caitlyn Olds with her studies at university this year. The Mount Gambier & District Community Bank® Branch and Rural Bank will also support an academically capable local student who may experience financial challenges with accessing tertiary study, specifically in the field of agribusiness. Mount Gambier & District

Community Bank® Chairman, Mr Herman Bersee said both the existing academic scholarshiop and the newly insitgated agribusiness scholarship was part of the branch’s ongoing commitment to building stronger communities. “Some students may face challenges in their ability to further their education and the program has been designed to give the students an opportunity to pursue their dreams”, Mr Bersee said. “We’re proud to financially support local students to continue their education, which will not only be a benefit to them but also to the wider community.” The successful applicant for the academic scholaship will initially receive funding for one year and depending on academic performance, the scholarship may be renewed to assist the second year of study. The agribusiness scholarship recipient will recieve an identival deal. “We’re pleased to work with Rural Bank this year to financially support local students

to continue their education in this important field of study, which will not only be a benefit to them but also to our wider community,” Mr Bersee said. Managing Director of Rural Bank, Paul Hutchinson said the longterm success of the farming sector relied on young people being encouraged to choose a career in the industry. “As a member of the Bendigo Bank family, Rural Bank is dedicated to backing the Australian farming community and tertiary study in this field is a key factor,” Mr Hutchinson said. The Bendigo BankRural Bank alliance is a first this year, with more than 160 scholarships set to be offered across Australia as part of the Bendigo and Adelaide Bank scholarship program. Bendigo and

Adelaide Bank Chairman, Robert Johnson said the program was now one of the largest on offer in Australia. “We were overwhelmed by the enthusiastic response and support from the Community Bank® network that means some 160 students will be able to pursue their academic dreams,” Mr Johanson said. Scholarship applications will close on Friday 24 January 2014 and will be assessed in early 2014. For more information about the 2014 scholarships, visit www.bendigoadelaide.com. au/scholarships. SPORT Triathletes While many will be looking forward to putting their feet up over the festive season, relaxation will be one of the last things on the mind of several hundred athletes in training for the Joggers World 2014 Kingston SE Triathlons. Now in its 26th year, the event will be held on the town’s foreshore and surrounds on Sunday, February 16. “The event will host Race 8 of the Triathlon SA State Series - the SA Olympic Distance Championship, and in addition to the elite tri-athletes from all the major SA clubs vying for the title, we’re expecting a strong field from across the state and Victoria – up to 450 entrants,” said Kingston SE Triathlon Club president Alison Stillwell. 2012 Short Course women’s winner Nikki Smart, who is a

upping the ante for Kingston event

member of the Lucindale Triathlon Club, is among the local entrants likely to be in with a strong chance. The 28 year old was women’s runner-up in the 2013 Blue Lake Fun Run held in Mount Gambier, achieving a 25 second improvement on the previous year’s winning time, and also came second in the Beachport Triathlon held in March. Nikki wasn’t there to defend her title at the 2013 Kingston Triathlon, but is planning a comeback in 2014. “I think I will attempt the Olympic Course, which is a 1500m swim leg, a 40 km cycle leg and a 10 km run,” she said. “I’m a speed runner more than a distance runner, but it will be good to give it a try, and it would be great to see as many people as possible have a go.” Mount Gambier entrant John Warwick said the

December 2013 NewsleƩer atmosphere at Kingston was always fantastic. “It’s a great location, being able to do it all right by the coast with a nice flat course, and it’s great swimming in the shallows where there aren’t any big waves,” he said. “There’s always a terrific turnout in terms of supporters – lots of clapping and cheering as you go past people’s houses; it feels like the whole town gets involved.” Last month, John completed the Murray Man Triathlon in Barmera, and he plans to attempt a half ironman in Melbourne around a fortnight out from the Kingston race.“I’ve got a set training plan that I do every week – three swims per week, at least three 50-80km bikes rides, and up to three 15-20km runs,” he said. Mount Benson’s Kylie Peel is also training hard for the February event.

A relative newcomer to the sport, she entered her first Kingston triathlon in 2012, completing the 13.3km cycle leg as part of a team with her Cape Jaffa Wines workmates. This year, she decided to tackle the Come n Tri Course, and was first local woman across the line and the outright winner of her age group. “I thought I would ease myself into it given that it was my first solo event, so I was really pleased with my result,” she said. Kylie plans to take on the Short Course (500m swim leg, 13.3km cycle leg and a 3.6km run). “It’s a bit longer than last time, but I wanted to challenge myself, and I’ve been doing a lot of mountain bike riding with a group from Robe, running around the farm and doing some laps at the Kingston pool to prepare,” she said. Kylie’s sons Clayton, 10, and Hudson, 8, will compete in the Harrington event for 7-11 year olds, while the Royal Flying Doctor Service will have a particular focus in the charity Fun Run/Walk this year, with all proceeds - including entry fees and any donations - going to the organisation. Generous cash prizes and numerous random draw prizes, including the ever-popular crayfish, are a special feature of the Kingston SE event, together with the option of a post-race massage. “I think the entire event is fantastic for the region; participants can enter either as individuals or as teams, and it’s great to see so many kids involved – it’s just a real family day for people of all abilities, which I love,” Kylie said. The various courses in the Joggers World 2014 Kingston SE Triathlons include International Cycles Olympic Course (1.5km S, 40km C, 10km R); Dan Luscombe Short Course (500m S, 13.3km C, 3.6km R); Kevin Wright Plumbing Come ‘n’ Tri Course (200m S, 7.3km C, 2.4km R); Harrington 7-11 year olds (50m S, 3km C, 500m R); RFDS Fun Run/Walk 6km/4km).

Dear Residents, With the next State Elec on scheduled for 15th March 2014 this is my final update of the year on what has been happening in Parliament during 2013. I will be standing again for the Electorate of Mount Gambier and basing my campaign on what we have achieved and mee ng the challenges of the Electorate and State. HEALTH PRACTITIONER REGULATION NATIONAL LAW (SOUTH AUSTRALIA) (PROTECTION OF TITLE—PARAMEDICS) AMENDMENT BILL. Currently paramedic prac ce is not regulated in Australia and in the absence of regula on a person may use the term paramedic regardless of whether that person has the necessary educa on and training. In passing this Bill, the tle of paramedic will be protected and it will be an offence to use the tle unless a person holds the appropriate qualifica ons, and I believe it will protect our people in South Australia and give paramedics a lot more kudos in what they actually do; they do such a vital service in our region. STATUTES AMENDMENT (ELECTRONIC MONITORING) BILL seeks to amend legisla on to allow for electronic monitoring of offenders and other persons released to the community that are assessed as posing a risk to the community and requiring addi onal monitoring. I certainly support this bill and I think it goes a long way in the aspect that it also addresses what can happen with future technologies. We can presently ascertain where people are through GPS technology, but no doubt one day we will also be able to determine whether a person is taking drugs or drinking alcohol when they should not be if that is a part of their bail condi ons. With future technology, there is no doubt that we will be able to tell when those offenders are doing the wrong thing. Par cularly with sex offenders, I believe that their civil liber es have gone out the door for the crimes they have commi ed, and the authori es should always know exactly where those people are so that they cannot reoffend. FIREARMS (MISCELLANEOUS) AMENDMENT BILL. When announced, the Premier stated that the objec ves of the Bill would relate only to the possession of firearms within serious and organised

crime and that it would not target licensed firearms owners. This is not correct, as it clearly does impact significantly on law-abiding ci zens and firearms owners. I consulted widely with various gun clubs within my electorate, with hunters, farmers and also the Combined Firearms Council of South Australia and I feel this par cular legisla on was rushed through Parliament without enough consulta on. I certainly agree and support the intent of the Bill but in its present form I voted against it. EVIDENCE (IDENTIFICATION EVIDENCE) AMENDMENT BILL. The main purpose of this Act is to allow photographic means of iden fica on equal foo ng with a tradi onal iden fica on line-up. The Act includes a safeguard that evidence will be inadmissible unless an audio visual record of the iden fica on process is made. I certainly support a Bill that takes into considera on the impact a tradi onal iden fica on process has on vic ms of crime and if they can view photographs in an orderly manner and in a proper environment, I think we will see a much be er iden fica on process. SOUTH EAST FOREST INDUSTRY ROUNDTABLE. The Roundtable was established to provide, among other things, advice to the Treasurer on the condi ons of sale of the forward rota ons of the South East forests. I asked the following ques ons to the Treasurer (16 October 2013). The Premier, also our Treasurer, took the ma er on no ce and would bring back a considered response. 1. During their delibera ons, were they made aware that the Glencoe nursery was to be included in the sale and, if so, what were the condi ons that they suggested? 2. Were the prospec ve purchasers made aware that the sale would include the nursery? 3. What condi ons were put in place for the future management of the nursery? 4. How much was it sold for? DEVELOPMENT (DEVELOPMENT PLAN AMENDMENTS) (NOTIFICATION) AMENDMENT BILL. Residents affected by development changes in their area will be more effec vely informed with adequate informa on enabling them to have input into how the development may

Mount Gambier Electorate Office Telephone (08) 8724 9944

DON PEGLER MP MEMBER FOR MOUNT GAMBIER

impact on them. Whenever development changes are made, good leadership in councils and government is all about informing the people of the proposed changes within their area. This Bill goes a long way toward doing that and, whilst there may be an extra workload for some councils and for the government, some mes when making changes, I feel that the extra workload is well worth it to have a community that is well informed.

s

NATURAL RESOURCES COMMITTEE: UPPER SOUTH EAST DRYLAND SALINITY AND FLOOD MANAGEMENT ACT REPORT 2012-13. I am calling for an inquiry into the South East’s drainage system. We need a full analysis of the whole of the South East drainage scheme to ascertain how effec ve it has been, where mistakes have been made and how we can fix those mistakes. We have to do a forward budget on what it is going to cost both to maintain and improve the whole scheme right throughout the South East and also inves gate how we can put some of that good water back into our aquifer, rather than having it wasted going out to sea. The unfortunate part about the whole drainage scheme is that neither the government of today or the opposi on have come up with a future management plan, nor a future investment plan for the whole of the South East as far as drainage is concerned. I believe there should be a co-investment by the government and landholders in the South East. I feel all of the South East benefits from this scheme, but we must also bear in mind that the whole of the state of South Australia benefits greatly from the South East. I will be strongly pushing for an inquiry and I believe that any inquiry should be independent of government. It is not about appor oning blame but about finding solu ons and I hope that the parliaments in the future will support an inquiry.

e VETERINARY PRACTICE (MISCELLANEOUS) AMENDMENT BILL. This Bill proposes the mutual recogni on of veterinary prac oners across Australia and whilst there will s ll be State and Territory Boards, mutual recogni on will allow veterinary prac oners to work interstate without the need to register in each state/territory. It will remove red tape, improve compe on, increase access to specialist services and allow greater freedom of movement for veterinarians responding to na onal crises. Reciprocal legisla on is already in place in Victoria, New South Wales, Tasmania and Queensland. SOUTH EAST FORESTRY INVESTMENT FUND. I raised the ques on with the Minister for Manufacturing, Innova on and Trade and the Minister for Small Business Minister, of

the $27 million that was allocated to the South East Forestry Investment Fund how much has been allocated and what is the process for distribu ng the balance. The first round of funding totalling $16.5 million under the grants package was distributed to Carter Holt Harvey (Pinepanels) $1.16M, McDonnell Industries $4.3M, Roundwood Solu ons $237,000, H & L Scheidl $1.1M, Whiteheads Timber Sales $2M and Timberlink Australia $7.8M. I also am seeking assurances for the people of the Mount Gambier Electorate that the balance will be used for the forestry industry in the South East and not go into general revenue. The Minister Hon T. Kenyon, responded with a Ministerial Statement “I wish to provide further informa on to the house regarding an earlier ques on by the member for Mount Gambier. The VTT final report was handed down on 30 September and the surplus $10 million from the South East Forestry Partnership Program will be spent on implemen ng its recommenda ons. That is, the money will stay in the South East to be spent in line with industry ini a ves that promote a sustainable and profitable forestry industry. I will advise further on how the government will ensure this is achieved through the establishment of the appropriate criteria.” (Hansard House of Assembly 28/11/13). These issues and others that I spoke on in Parliament are all available for reading on my website so please have a read at h p:// www.donpegler.com.au to see what has been debated in Parliament throughout the year. LOCAL Scholarship Kira McDonnell is living the dream. She is on her way to an international career in hotel management

paves the way for dream career

after winning a $20,000 scholarship to the International College of Hotel Management (ICHM) in Adelaide.

Her initial career path was vet. “But I realised I couldn’t be a vet when I realised how much I hated needles,” Kira

said. Three years ago she went on her first overseas holiday with two of her best friends to Italy and started to realise the alternative career path she wanted to pursue. “I had never considered a career in hospitality but when I went on the trip to Italy that’s when it started,” Kira said. “Once I got back I thought how am I going to get back over here?” Firstly, she pursued a familiar path for senior students - a Rotary Exchange. That’s how she developed a love affair with Switzerland, which is where she would love to eventually earn a position. “I had the chance to go through a five star hotel and that’s when I really started to think about hotel management,” Kira said. “To see what you can do to exceed the expectations of guests and what it looks like when everything is perfect.” That 2012 year long exchange also saw her master a second language - German - and if you want to work in international hotel management, being at least bi-lingual, if not multi-lingual, is essential, especially

as part of the Swiss Hotel Management component of her degree. “I have my German but want to also master French or Spanish which would allow me to work in a lot more countries,” Kira said. “I am leaning towards French as that gets you access to a lot of Europe.” By her own admission, the former Grant High School student, who completed Year 12 this year, is a list maker and planner, and she already has an intensive language course earmarked for

her third year of the four year degree. A representative from the ICHM visits Grant High every year to extol the virtues of studying at the college but Kira missed last year’s presentation as she was on her exchange. “I was tossing up between ICHM and Blue Mountains Hotel Management School,” Kira said. But so strong was the case made by the ICHM representative, Kira immediately decided on the Adelaide based course - earning the

scholarship has been an added bonus. “It is not a cheap school to go to so to get that help is amazing,” Kira said. “It is also a boost for my confidence that I’m doing the right thing - not only do my family believe in me but the school believes I can do well.” Over the next four years Kira will study for two degrees—the Bachelor of Business (Hospitality Management) and the Bachelor of International Hotel Management (Swiss Hotel Association). Paid industry placements, which make up half of the ICHM program, could see Kira working anywhere in Australia from year one and anywhere in the world from year two. She will head out on her first industry placement in July. Kira is set to live on campus, making that decision when she visited the college’s open weeks, which she would recommend to any student contemplating a similar career choice. “You got a taste of what you were going to be studying, met the teachers and were able to talk to the current students,” Kira said. “They all said living on campus was great - you were close to classes, your meals are provided and you are able to form a close network with your classmates.” Above - Kira McDonnell is set to pursue a career in international hotel management.

COLLECTED STUPIDITY

December 9 1960 - The first episode of long running British soap opera Coronation Street was screened on Granada Television. 1992 - Prince Charles and Princess Diana announced their separation.

I’ve been receiving quite a few emails lately which is good for many reasons. Firstly it means someone is actually reading this tripe each week. Secondly it means I don’t have to come up with an idea for my article that week. So here goes…“Dear Robbie, Your articles are so long. I find that I’m struggling to maintain concentration through

Lifestyle1.net - 024

Dear Robbie XVIII by Robbie Tansel

the whole thing and sometimes struggle to get to the end. I’m a busy woman and there always seems to be something to interrupt me. What should I do? Brenda from Bordertown” I guess I better try to keep this brief Brenda or you might not get the full effect of my advice. Would single syllable words help too? I mean, do you want short words, dumb dumb? Sorry, Brenda, I didn’t mean to get grumpy but I’m just a bit tired. It’s the worst time of year at Births, Deaths and Marriages so I’m snowed under and that’s making me grumpy. I think everyone tries to die so they don’t have to figure out what to buy people for a present. As if that’s not bad enough, Donna is one of these irritating people who love Christmas. I am one of those people who used to be referred to as a Scrooge and now is labelled as a Grinch. Quite obviously this is not the ideal mix for a happy house. Donna has gone narny bananas at the Tansel mansion and

I’m pretty sure my house looks more Christmassy than Santa’s workshop. Every day when I get home from work she’s added another level of decoration. I coped with the tinsel that appeared strung in various locations throughout the house. As long as it’s not hanging down in my road it’s not an issue. Next came the Christmas tree which I can deal with. I can’t say that I enjoy being part of the decorating process but I don’t mind seeing the finished product. I also enjoy trying to guess what is wrapped up in packages underneath. With a psychotic 18 month old baby Shaquille on the loose in the house, it’s also enjoyable watching him sneak up to the tree to remove decorations and try to liberate the presents from their wrapping paper. After tinsel and tree, came the next phase that involved Donna trying to make sure our house could be spotted from the International Space Station. This is where my inner Grinch started really coming to the surface. For starters expecting me to climb ladders and the roof of my house is dangerous. As if that

wasn’t bad enough, have you seen how much power costs these days? Donna wants me to add completely nonnecessary power sucking devices to the exterior of my house. Well that’s just silly. I knew things were totally out of control though when I came home and found a dozen little people dressed as elves wandering around my house. I’m not sure that it’s politically correct to hire midgets to dress up as elves throughout the Christmas period. I’m pretty sure it’s not politically correct to call them midgets either. Sorry. At least I didn’t light one on fire. The fact they were in my house was disconcerting enough but then there were countless other issues. Some of them were far too committed to staying in character and insisted on calling me Santa. Some of the others were obviously staunch members of some little person union who insisted on receiving their allotted break time. There’s something particularly disturbing about having Christmas elves lurking in your backyard sucking down cigarettes even if they do try to disguise them as candy canes. Anyway Brenda I was meant to be solving your problems and you’ve probably stopped reading by now, but the short version of all my articles is weak pretense, followed by flawed arguments, then repeated dumb comments, graphic description of my ignorance, lame joke about women, sloppy conclusion and bizarre segue to how you can email me at robbietansel@gmail.com You never have to read it again.

Throughout June 2013, Radio 5SE once again conducted its annual Give Me Five for Kids appeal. This is the ninth year the station has run the appeal, and it has been a resounding success for the Limestone Coast community, and the hospitals for which the funds are raised. This is also the ninth year that 5SE and People’s Choice Credit Union have joined forces to help purchase much needed equipment

for the children’s wards of local hospitals. People’s Choice Credit Union started the appeal by generously donating $3000. People’s Choice Credit Union Mount Gambier branch manager Sue Wilson, along with Country Heath South East regional director Jayne Downs and Naracoorte Hospitla executive officer and director of nursing and midwifery Pam Shubert were on hand last week to receive the cheque,

presented by 5SE breakfast announcer Ewan Grant. Ewan said 5SE’s Give Me 5 for Kids was a community based appeal raising money for the children’s wards of the Mount Gambier, Millicent, Penola, and Naracoorte hospitals. “The key to the appeal’s success has always been that money raised locally stays within the Limestone Coast, and we are happy to be presenting this cheque to the hospitals,” Ewan said.

Donations were collected via collection tins placed at retail outlets and strategic locations throughout the region, at People’s Choice Credit Union branches in Mount Gambier, Millicent and Naracoorte, as well as through fundraising efforts by various businesses, community groups, schools, service clubs, industry, the agricultural sector and the general public. “We have raised over $210,000 in the nine years we have run the campaign, and this year we raised just under $13,000,” Ewan said. Funds raised will be put towards a second neo-natal resuscitation unit for the Naracoorte Hospital, and the Mount Gambier, Millicent and Penola hospitals will combine their funds to purchase two paediatric wheelchairs valued at $4000 each. They will also look at purchasing a Wii game console for rehabilitation activities for the children. The school was recognised for the success of its on-going partnership with Generations in Jazz Incorporated, receiving the top honours and $200,000 in prize money at a gala event in Melbourne attended by more than 300 guests from the education, community and business sectors.

LOCAL National NAB General Manager, Corporate Responsibility, Paula Benson said Tenison Woods College was awarded the top prize because of the positive impact the program had on the local community, and the strong appreciation for music and the arts at the college as a result of the partnership. The Generations in Jazz Incorporated partnership was developed to provide students in Mount Gambier with access to previously unavailable music education opportunities. Tenison Woods College initially worked with Generations in Jazz to establish a program at the college to introduce students to music. Since then, the partnership has evolved and is now home to the Generations in Jazz Academy, a unique one year course in jazz music. Attracting students from

award honours jazz program from opp. page across the country the academy accepts only a small number of high school graduates each year by audition, giving them the opportunity to study under some of Australia’s elite musicians. “Tenison Woods College is a fantastic example of a strong community partnership that provides curriculum opportunities to students in an isolated area that would otherwise have gone without,” Ms Benson said. “This partnership instils a sense of pride in students exhibiting musical talent, attracts talented students to the College and is responsible for changing attitudes, skills and lives for the students at the College and in the wider community.” NAB Schools First is a partnership between NAB, the Foundation for Young Australians

(FYA) and the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER) that recognises and rewards outstanding schoolcommunity partnerships that lead to improved student outcomes. The Tenison Woods College and Generations in Jazz Incorporated partnership was one of eight theme award winners that made up the short list for the national awards. Tenison Woods College principal David Mezinec said the partnership had a clear moral purpose, shared vision and strong desire to make a difference. “Our partnership has grown and developed because there has been a deep mutual respect of each party, a clear and common purpose, and a transparent no-nonsense approach in addressing challenges,” Mr Mezinec said. He said music education in the South East was important and the win highlighted the enormous collaborative efforts of staff, students and parents in partnership with Generations in Jazz Incorporated. “Since our partnership ties first began in 2007, Tenison Woods College now offers a strong and vibrant music program that has opened up the world of music to children in regional South

Australia,” Mr Mezinec said. He was delighted for the partnership to be recognised, with the program’s continual growth and expansion ensuring music became not only a way of life, but a new avenue of future career pathways, for students of the region. To close the National Award Ceremony in Melbourne, members of the 2013 Academy band were invited on stage to perform with Harrison Craig, winner of The Voice 2013. The next day the band celebrated its win, performing to more than 7000 employees at the National Australia Bank Head Office. Next month, Mount Gambier will welcome the 2014 academy students to the region with the sons of internationally acclaimed jazz musician, James Morrison, among the 17 students from across the nation to be accepted into the academy. Others who were also successful in securing a position in the 2014 GIJ Academy include Mount Gambier’s Jackson Heaven and singer Natasha Weatherill.

gathered at the building trades facility at Grant High School to acknowledge the achievement of students who have taken part in the program The Doorways to Construction course focuses on domestic construction. Students from local high schools undertake a program of experiences in the building industry, learning about various trades and the use of the equipment and tools associated with those trades. This year’s intake started with 71 students. In tough economic times, 14 students have been successful in obtaining employment in areas of choice, with 10 of these as apprentices in the construction industry. Four students are also still waiting for word on apprentice positions they are in the running to win. Students were presented with certificates acknowledging their participation and highlighting their achievements in the 2013 course. Five awards in total were presented, three by local Rotary clubs and two by long time industry supporter Banner Hardware. Banner sponsors an award to a student from each of the two local high schools. This year the Grant High School student recipient was Emmerson Sakkers and the

Mount Gambier High School student was Sam Baker. Both awards were presented by Paul Beckman. The First Year Construction student who has shown the most potential in construction was Riley Janeway, from Grant High School. He received a tool voucher from the Rotary Club of Mount Gambier West. Riley has shown a tremendous work ethic. The First Year Plumbing Award was presented to Sam Spiridis, of Grant High School by the Rotary Club of Mount Gambier. Sam also received a tool voucher. LOCAL Chinese A contingent of students and staff from Tenison Woods College ventured further than most on their recent school holidays – heading off on an enriching 21 day tour of China. The culturallyhungry group took in some of the world’s most famous tourist sights as well as experiencing the country’s rich cultural diversity during the College’s sixth biennial China Trip. Under the guidance of Tenison Woods College joint tour leaders, Sonia Braithwaite and Suzanne Pepe, the cultural study tour enabled students to immerse themselves in the Chinese language, art and history, visit significant sites and enjoy the country’s cultural delights. cont. opp. page.

trip a cultural eye opener cont. from opp. page

“The aim of the trip is to let students see and experience a different culture, to take them out of the comfort zone and learn about other ways of life,” Mrs Braithwaite said. “The itinerary is designed in such a way that the students are able to see all the different aspects of China. We purposely start in Beijing because it displays the older, more traditional style of China, whereas we end the tour in Shanghai which has a significant European influence with its early English architecture. “This is not just a holiday, it’s a learning experience, and it’s important that the students see everything

China has to offer. As you travel across the country every city is totally different, the people are different, even the food and buildings are different.” Mrs Braithwaite said for many of the Year 10 and 11 students this was their first experience overseas. We arrived in Beijing at 7am and had the rest of the day to relax and get our bearings,” she said. “The students were blown away by what they first encountered in this amazing city.Skyscraper upon skyscraper, traffic that seemed to go on forever, and the many cultural differences, some subtle and some not.”

The group spent six days in Beijing, taking in the enormous Tiananmen Square and the Forbidden City, a 250 acre home of the last Emperor which is surrounded by a 10.7 metre wall and a large moat. Mrs Braithwaite said the group visited many of the traditional tourist spots including a visit to the Hutong area via rickshaw where they enjoyed a traditional lunch cooked by the owner of the home we visited. The tour visited Xian where they were joined by another 100,000 tourists bustling to see the awe-inspiring Terracotta Warriors.“The Great Wall of China was definitely one of

the highlights, but students agreed that the visit to our sister school in Jinan also left many memories,” she said. Amongst the traditional strictness of the Chinese school routine, the Tenison Woods College students also had the chance to see the fun side of their education. “A bell sounded and the children immediately lined up and marched out to fitness,” Mrs Braithwaite said. “It was a sight to see when the whole school of over 1500 students progressed out of their rooms into a quadrangle in such an orderly manner. The marching music was loud and rhythmical. Then the music changed to an upbeat sound that the students obviously knew well as they all instantly progressed into their fitness routine. “The final lesson of the day was Art where the group were fascinated to see the students competently composing traditional art works such as paper cutting, calligraphy and painting. “The tour was just such an amazing experience for everyone and it’s a real eye opener for students giving them a glimpse into one of the world’s most fascinating and exciting cultures.”

SPORT Dual

State representative becoming an expert at juggling

Bella Stratford is 12 years old but has already proven herself to be an excellent fighter and a proven juggler. After narrowly missing selection in an SA Country Basketball team in 2012, the Tenison Woods College student fronted up again, more determined than ever to represent her State. Not only did she earn selection in the SA

Country Under 12 team but she is now a dual capped South Australian player, also earning selection in the SAPSASA Under 12 Girls Cricket team. Consequently her summer school holidays will be far from a chance to rest and rejuvenate. She competes in the National Cricket Championships from January 3-11, in Bendigo,

and then from January 1119 at the annual Australian Country Junior Basketball Cup in Albury/Wodonga. Not surprisingly of the past 20 weekends, 16 of them have been in Adelaide. Bella’s weeks are similarly jam packed and you can’t help but smile when a 12 year old tells you she has one night “off” a week - Monday. Last year when Bella missed out on selection in the Under 14 line-up she was the only Mount Gambier played in contention when it got down to the squad of 24 before the final cut, this year she’ll see plenty of familiar faces. Two Under 14 teams have been selected with fellow Lakers Jordyn Adams, Madi Freeman and Olivia Patzel also heading to Albury, along with the usual strong contingent across all age groups from the Mount Gambier program (see sidebar for full list). Things are a little different in the cricket, where Bella is not only the only South East representative, she’s the only regional player in the line-up as well. Normally once you get to State level, kids are picked in cricket for their gifts in one particular area but Bella has all her options open. She labels herself a bowling allrounder, who also wicketkeeps - keeping up the family

tradition that saw her father Daniel represent the State as a keeper, as well as her uncle Dion, who over the years shared the duties with Daniel behind the stumps for East Gambier. Bella, too, plays for East Gambier, in the Sims Shield (under 12) competition and what she is loving about the State experience is playing alongside other girls. That is also an opportunity she has had through her weekend visits to Adelaide, playing B grade women’s district cricket. “It’s cool to play with other girls,” Bella said. On the basketball front, Bella is part of the development programs at Basketball Mount Gambier, with training commitments Tuesday night, she then plays two games on Wednesday night, after scurrying to the stadium after spending an hour at cricket training. Thursday nights she heads back to the stadium to referee and Sims Shield cricket usually takes up her Friday night before she heads to Adelaide for State trainings, which miraculously rarely clash. “I’ve been really lucky that I’ve only had to miss one or two because they are both at the same time,” Bella said. With father, Daniel, adding that both sports have been accommodating of

her dual commitments. Many people would also recognise Bella from her football season gig - she is a regular boundary umpire on junior football games on Saturdays. “The football umpiring has been so good for my fitness,” Bella said. There’s no denying Bella is one switched on young lady, who realises her passion for sport must not see her schoolwork suffer. “I try and do all my homework on Monday nights,” she said. “And I always work as quickly as I can in class so I can start any homework during class time.” At this early stage of her senior education, she is heading into Year 7 at Tenison in 2014, she is juggling all her balls and schoolwork, without incident, with her grades staying at a high level, keeping teachers, and perhaps, more importantly, her parents happy. Bella is not only enjoying testing herself at a higher level with her sport but the social aspect of playing in State teams. “I’ve already made so many new friends,” she said. Bella has also had the added honour of being named vice captain of the SAPSASA State Girls Cricket Team. Left - Bella Stratford has a lot going on at the moment.

LAKERS FILL PLENTY OF STATE POSITIONS AGAIN Five Junior Lakers, led by Australian Development Camp participant Sam Stafford, along with Stephen Sochacki, Braiden Ousey, Josh Jenner and bottom age player Brad Rathjen, are members of the SA Country under 18 teams. Successful junior Lakers’ coach Bryan Green makes his debut as assistant coach of the under 18 boys and coach of the Sharks team at Albury. Talented state representative Rachael Hines is the sole Lakers’ representative in the under 18 girls teams. Four Junior Lakers will suit up in the SA Country under 16 boys’ teams. They are Lachlan Hunter, Kurt Rodis, Zach de Wit and Emmerson White. The trio of Mary Wilson, Tenille Gray and Brenna McKay join the boys in the trip to Albury in the under 16 girls teams. Four under 14 Junior Lakers girls have been named in the two SA Country teams for Albury (see main story). They are Jordyn Adams, Madi Freeman, Olivia Patzel and Bella Stratford. Mount Gambier junior development officer Trevor Semmens is coach of the Magpies under 14 team. Mitchell Hunter followed up his representative selection last year with a spot in the under 14 boys’ teams. Matt Markiewicz continues his State coaching role in charge of Magpies in January. Lauren Ross has enjoyed multiple successes over the year and has capped them off with selected in a strong under 15 SA Country Girls’ team to play in the Southern Cross Challenge. Shaun Lock and Olivia Dukalskis are reserves for these under 15 teams. Promising junior Emily Close will carry the flag for Mount Gambier in the SA Country under 13 squad, in the Eltham/ Dandenong Tournament, at the end of January. Former State junior Brianna Walters and Melissa Rathjen will travel to Albury as team and group managers.

MOUNT GAMBIER TOUCH TEAM DEFENDS CROSS BORDER TITLE The Mount Gambier Touch Association returned victorious from Portland on Saturday after retaining the Border Challenge Cup. A joint initiative by Touch Football SA and Touch Football Victoria, the Border Challenge was created to enable two of the most remote associations in each State to play more competitive representative touch. In a format consisting of men’s, women’s and mixed games over two rounds, consistency would prove vital to the tournament winners. With many of the Mount’s best players unavailable, and the home ground advantage to Portland, the travelling squad was well aware of the tough task ahead. Although the dominance of the Portland women’s team proved pivotal, Mount Gambier was able to accrue enough points to take home the cup after a tough final game decider. Results Men - Mount Gambier 9 (B. Loef 3; T. Dolan 2; S. Fulton D. Watson J. Brooks N. Moretti) d Portland 1 (M. Storey); Mount Gambier 12 (B. Loef, M. Devereux, D. Watson, T. Dolan 2; J. Brooks, S. APOLOGY TO OUR LOYAL READERS, ADVERTISERS & CONTRIBUTORS Lifestyle1 would like to sincerely apologise to its readers for the incorrect results published in last week’s issue of the magazine. It was an error by the company that prints our publication, which inadvertently repeated a previous week’s scores and stories. Obviously not having our coverage of the Blue Lake Fun Run, One Day Cup cricket semi finals and other news and results from the week and weekend was extremely disappointing for us as well. The upcoming issue of Southern Life, due in store December 20, will have a feature on all the action from the 2013 Blue Lake Fun Run. Lifestyle1.net - 036

The match of the day this week saw Concordes A take on Demons A in perfect conditions at Blue Lake Sports Park. Demons, undefeated so far this season, were looking to continue this run without Maggie Breen, instead fielding Michelle Lewis on the mound for this A grade clash. If anyone thought it would be easier without Breen they were not counting on the outstanding performance put in by Lewis, as she proceeded to record a dominant nine strike outs over seven innings. But Concordes knew this was their big chance to inflict a loss on their rivals, and were not to be put off, starting the game with a run in the first innings thanks to an early walk and passed ball by Demons. From this point on Lewis held the Concordes batters scoreless until the fourth innings, when a two base hit to Allana Jones scored Billie Jones, and a safe hit to Sarah Moretti scored Allana Jones to put the score to 3-0. Demons were not done yet though, as they got on the board with one run in the sixth innings and then another in the seventh, however Concordes held their nerve and went on to record a 3-2 victory in what was their best game of the season. Safe hits for both sides were rare in a game dominated by great pitching and tight fielding, with Michelle Lewis and Cristan Smith both recording two hits for Demons and Allana Jones and Sarah Moretti getting one each for Concordes. By contrast, Warriors A completed a comprehensive 16-0 victory over the Demons B grade side in a one sided game that saw Warriors A record 10 safe hits including home runs to Eleanor McClintock and Tori Koop. McClintock pitched well for Warriors, only allowing one runner on base for the game, and also lead with the bat with three safe hits from three. Warriors were simply too good for Demons and this game was never in doubt. Warriors Under 17 also had a good win over Concordes B, in a game which saw the Concordes girls really struggle to find any form with the bat. After a great game against Warriors A last week, Concordes B were frustrated by good Warriors pitching, not managing to get anything going and remaining scoreless for the match. Conversely Warriors were able to string together a number of safe hits to score runs in every innings, lead by Georgia Hood with three safe hits, including a home run, and Taylor Wilsmore with two safe hits (including a three bagger and a double). In the end Warriors 13 defeated a scoreless Concordes B. MOUNT GAMBIER SOFTBALL LEAGUE ROUND FIVE RESULTS A/B Grade Warriors A 16 (E. McClintock (HR) 3; T. Koop (HR) 2; T. Hood, A. Hood, T. a trailer, boat or caravan, you should check that the vehicle you will drive is suited to the type and size of the trailer, boat or caravan; any loads you are carrying are evenly distributed and properly restrained; fittings, couplings and safety chains are correctly fastened; your vehicle, trailer and caravan are roadworthy and registered your number plate and registration stickers are not obscured; you are carrying only one trailer or caravan at a time (not both) and you don’t overload your trailer. Travelling with children If you have children, it’s a good idea to pack some ‘boredom beaters’ for the trip. That way you’ll avoid that familiar ‘are we there yet?’ cry from the back seat. Try music – take along a portable music player with head phones for the children; movies – bring a portable DVD player with a couple of DVDs to choose from or car-friendly games, puzzles, books and drawing books. SAFE MOTORING FEATURE Arrive Holidays are meant to be fun. But it’s no fun if you’re involved in a crash along the way. It may seem obvious, but some planning and preparation before you set off gives you a better chance of enjoying a safe drive. Plan ahead Plan to have rest stops every two hours if you’re driving a long distance – make them part of the fun. Plan not to speed – allow extra time for delays and extra traffic on the road. Arrange fun activities for kids along the way to help make their trip more enjoyable. Be prepared Get a map so you can estimate how long it will take to get there and plan your route. Program your GPS with your destination before departing. Work out what you can do as part of your drive. Pack a picnic basket and enjoy the rest stops along the way. Make sure you get enough sleep and don’t drink alcohol the night before you set off. Pack wisely and don’t put the children in the car until you’re ready to go. Check medications with your doctor (in case they make you drowsy when driving). Make sure you eat properly – not too little, not too much. Check that everything is okay No matter where you’re going, it’s important to make sure you, your vehicle, trailer, caravan and/or boat are in tip-top condition. Before going on a long trip, it is advisable to book your vehicle in for a thorough safety check by a reputable mechanic. It’s also advisable to run through the following checklists before you go. For all vehicles, you should check that all lights (headlights, brake lights and indicators) are in working order; that wipers, washers and horn operate properly; the fan belt condition and tension; the brake and clutch fluid levels and battery water level; the cooling system and hoses; the oil levels (and check for leaks); that your tyres (including your spare) are inflated to the pressure specified for your vehicle. safe motoring SAFE MOTORING FEATURE Arrive

Hitting the road As soon as you get in the car, put on your seat belt and make sure all passengers do the same. Seat belts improve your chances of surviving a serious crash by up to 50%. Along the journey, keep checking to make sure children are still wearing their seat belts. It is also important not to drive while you are tired. As soon as you feel tired, stop and have a break. Take a 15 minute break every two hours to rest your eyes and refresh yourself. Don’t drive for

alive this festive season from page 45

more than 10 hours in a day. Be sure to stop for a break when you suffer from sore or heavy eyes; dim or fuzzy vision; you start ‘seeing’ things; droning and humming in ears; general tiredness; stiffness and cramps; aches and pains; daydreaming; delayed reaction

times; unintentional increases or decreases in speed; stumbling for gear changes and car wandering across the road. If you are able to share the driving load that is another great tactic for ensuring the driver is always alert. During peak holiday periods it’s important to be patient, as there is likely to be extra traffic on the road. Give yourself extra time to get to your destination – it’s better to arrive safely and late, than not at all. Don’t be tempted to speed to catch up on any lost time. It’s simply not worth the risk. The faster you drive, the longer it takes to stop Apart from increasing

your chances of having a serious crash, you also run the risk of receiving a hefty fine – which will put a serious dent in your holiday spending money and enjoyment. During holidays, children spend more time outside, so be extra cautious. When you’re driving past parks or along suburban streets, take care and look out for kids playing on the streets, riding bikes, or walking. Most of all, remember many crashes happen within 50km of home. So make sure you’re alert during the whole trip. Don’t let your guard down just because you’re nearly home.
