Eighteen school leavers from Portland’s Bayview College are electing to make a difference by volunteering at a secondary school in Vietnam. This is the third year students will be taking this journey. The Schoolies with a Cause (SWAC) Program is an incredible overseas challenge designed for Bayview College Year 12 students to celebrate their end of schooling through positive engagement with disadvantaged communities. Over the past two years it has provided a fun and life changing alternative to the self-indulgent schoolies trips that some students undertake. The program has grown with the number of students attending tripling in the past three years. The tasks the group expect to complete on the 10 day trip include building up the playground surface to prevent it from flooding and laying concrete to create an enhanced surface for ball games. The work to be completed by this year’s team should see the project fully completed. The students left on Monday and will return on December 5. Resources purchased from the Safeway Earn

& Learn Program will be donated to the Thanh Loc Kindergarten. “There are many benefits of our students travelling and volunteering in a developing country,” Bayview College principal

Dr Michelle Kearney said. “Such experiences have a huge impact on a student’s life by expanding their horizons and changing the way they see the world. “Our previous students who

have returned from their time in Vietnam have a much broader and indepth understanding of the world, and it’s many cultures.” The group will be guided by program leader Rodney Stone, who has completed many volunteering stints in Vietnam over the past five years and is passionate about the country and the people. The students will also be accompanied by Bayview staff members Clint Foster, Kym Menzel and Jacqui Kilby. Year 12 student Danika Koenig believes she can contribute to the project by her hard work, compassion and understanding. “I’m interested in making an impact on the lives of others,” Danika said. “I know the students at Thanh Loc don’t have the same privileges that I have but through our project and by us visiting them we will make a difference.” This will be Danika’s first trip overseas. Students in Year 11 have already commenced fundraising for their project in 2014. Above - Year 12 student Danika Koenig is taking part in her first Schoolies for a Cause trip.

COLLECTED STUPIDITY

I can’t get no satisfaction by Robbie Tansel

Until December 6 - Dreams & Aspirations - PORTLAND ARTS CENTRE, PORTLAND - Dreams & Aspirations is a collective exhibition of works by artists with a disability who reside in the Glenelg Shire. This exhibition is a celebration of ability, dreams and aspirations that encourage people with a disability to express themselves through their art.

Some of you will remember that I have been working at the Office of Births, Deaths and Marriages this week. My main area of responsibility is making sure no one registers an inappropriate or stupid name for their newborn. You wouldn’t believe the stupid names people want to use on their new little precious. I would like to apologise while I have the opportunity, for a recent stuff up you may have noticed on the birth’s page of the local paper. I must have been having a dyslexic moment. I let the name pass because I thought it said Satin like silk, not Satan like the devil. Admittedly Satin would still have been a stupid name worth blocking but some days it’s just not worth trying to argue with knuckle dragging, oxygen thieves who aren’t going to be able to understand my perfectly rational reasoning. Anyway my job is like all of your jobs. This sort of minor mishap ends up making that Typhoon Haiyan (an actual human tragedy) look like a gentle breeze on a fresh Spring

morning. It gets turned into some monumental big deal which it’s not. Sometimes I make mistakes, but I am only human, and really don’t get paid enough to care about my job. Having completed a 30 page report about how I let someone name their child after the devil, I start asking questions about my work place and again I’m pretty sure that your work environments are very similar to mine now. What makes all our higher

ups think that we’re going to do our jobs well? Over the past 15 years our employers have downsized workforces so there are less people being asked to do the same amount of work duties. In fact they aren’t asking for the same amount of work. They are asking for more than ever. We are more accountable than ever before and expected to document more of what we are doing in written form than ever before. So again, this begs the question how can we be expected to be more productive while having to work harder than ever before? Businesses and work places are actually

Celebrating 100 YEARS

trying to perform their duties, provide their goods or deliver services for cheaper and cheaper, again forcing employers to cut costs and expect us to do our work with fewer and fewer resources. For example the Offices of Births, Deaths and Marriages can afford staples but not the staplers to deliver them through paper. I have to spend time delivering them into the paper by hand. Again, I can’t afford this extra time leading me to be less efficient in my job. It’s easy for our higher ups to simply point the finger and tell us to do this, that and the other. They can easily transfer their excess workload down the chain of command until it ends up in the hands of a desk grunt like myself. I don’t think we’re always getting the best candidates into these leadership positions. People seem to rise to their level of ambition, not always their level of ability. In my experience the people best qualified for management roles often are a little too humble about their abilities and have other priorities than schmoozing and wearing fancy pants. Quite often they realise the amount of ridiculous extra expectations that will be placed upon them so make having a life outside of work their priority. I don’t know what the answer is, but I would like you to know that I had no part in signing off on Kanye West and Kim Kardashian’s son’s name. North West? If you would like to refer a name to me to be reviewed by births, deaths and marriages, email me at robbietansel@gmail.com

Last Friday was White Ribbon Day and the spotlight on saying no to violence against women was shone at events from the Thursday night fundraising cocktail party, through a free community breakfast Friday morning and the now traditional Australia’s Loudest Shout, where men from the community gathered in the Cave Gardens and said a collective “no” to violence against women. Persistent rain threatened the ‘SHOUT” but around 100 men and women braved the elements to make a stand. There were also a number of other fundraisers and communtiy events. 1. LOCAL Tackling The Right Path consortium has been launched in South West Victoria to introduce a new style of therapeutic treatment to ease the harm of alcohol and other drugs and other complicating issues. A new team has been appointed and has started rolling out services across the region. The consortium is led by Western Region Alcohol and Drug Centre (WRAD) with Glenelg South Grampians Drug Treatment Services and Colac Area Health. The project has received more than $500,000 funding as a pilot project from the State Government Department of Health. Team leader Sybil Braybrook said the program aimed to secure client-driven outcomes, integrate services and provide easy-to-access treatment pathways for people in need. Ms Braybrook has been joined by clinicians Kayleigh Walmsley, in Warrnambool, Wendy Howe, in Glenelg and Maude Berry, in Colac. The program is the first of its type in rural

Victoria and also marks the first time the three agencies have joined together to address a common need across the region. It is introducing a range of clinical counselling and support interventions to reduce drug use and related harm, and maintain therapeutic change. Linking to a range of local support services is an integral part of the treatment process. Ms Braybrook said the Right Path team aimed to increase the number of people being supported to address

their complex needs. “We want to make sure that people who need support are accessing the services they require. “We have specialised services available and will identify gaps and develop new referral pathways to make the client’s journey easier,” she said. “It follows a `no wrong door’ philosophy to make sure clients get the right service provided by appropriate specialists to improve their mental, physical and social wellbeing. We have a strong focus on client participation.” The

service will be available to people aged over 18 with complex alcohol and other drug addiction problems and cooccurring mental health conditions affecting their lives. The Right Path Consortium will also work with families and carers to ensure a holistic approach. Ms Braybrook said the consortium was focussing on recovery and maintenance and would use evidencebased therapeutic counselling to promote positive change. The team will also be supported by a psychologist. The team will work with GPs, health providers, industry and community leaders to strengthen existing and forge new partnerships. “We hope to prove over the next eight months of our funding that we are providing a service that helps people to make the right choice and makes a real difference in their lives,” Ms Braybrook said. making life better There are a number of commuinity groups, businesses and government departments that have a strong focus on helping make life better for those in our community with a disability and the South East Disability Advocacy Servive (SEDAS) is one of those. It proides a voice for those who struggle to be heard and provides support and assistance every step of the way. Advertorial I SOUTH EAST DISABILITY ADVOCACY SERVICE (SEDAS)

Giving a voice to the disabled in the community Back in December 2007. South East Disability Advocacy Service (SEDAS) was officially launched. It was the culmination of the desire of the management and board of MALSSA Inc. to have a local disability advocate service in the South East. SEDAS has been serving the people of Mount Gambier and the Limestone Coast for almost six years. In

these years it has proven that such a service as this is very important to people with disability who so frequently find they are not listened to or understood. The daily struggle is enough for most of us but those with disability find it even more frustrating and sometimes even impossible to live a full and productive life. SEDAS works hard to

make sure people with disability have a voice, are understood and their rights respected. In the past five years, SEDAS has dealt with a wide range of issues from abuse, access to services and support with referral and information. SEDAS has also supported the community with the IDoPWD Day on December 3, offering workshops to inform both clients and service providers. Finally SEDAS has been an independent support for services that need an advocate to allow them to achieve the level of service quality they have set for themselves SEDAS has been growing ever since

it started in 2007, you can find out more by logging onto www.SEDAS.org.au, Facebook at South East Disability Advocacy Service or pick up the phone and call on (08)8723 6002. SEDAS is open five days a week at 71 Suttontown Road, Mount Gambier, from 9am to 5pm so please contact them to make an appointment.

WHAT IS DISABILITY ADVOCACY? People with a disability have the same rights (and responsibilities) as people who do-not have a disability. The core purpose of advocacy is to ensure that people with a disability realise these rights in practice by advocating with and for them. SEDAS helps people of all ages with any type of disability or mental illness get fair treatment in Mount Gambier and Limestone Coast area. An advocate can provide individual advocacy and help get fair treatment: • from government departments, disability services, other services and businesses; • at work, university, school or TAFE; • with accommodation, transport and access; • With legal, healthcare or money issues.

LOCAL Organic Hamilton and Tarrington residents who register for a fortnightly green waste collection service will pay $80, which includes a one-off payment of for the 240-litre wheelie bin, and for a fortnightly kerbside collection from January 1until June 30 next year. Mayor Albert Calvano said more than 700 residents

waste collection set to kick off have already registered for service, the first of its kind in the Hamilton region. “This new service will commence in January next year, and there is still time for residents to register,” Mayor Calvano said. “This is an opt-in service for residents, and we’ve been able to keep the costs down to

encourage more residents to take advantage of this initiative. “It can also save you money, because it costs about $15 to take an average trailer-load of green waste to the tip yourself.” The service will collect garden, food and organic waste. The purpose of the new service is to compost the materials collected, rather than put them in the landfill. The first 1000 households that sign up for the new service will pay just $80 (bin and service) for six months thanks to Victorian Government grant. These households will also receive a free kitchen caddy which can be used to collect food scraps and waste in the kitchen

before being disposed of in the new bins. Hamilton residents were sent a registration form in the mail recently but forms are also available from council’s customer service centres and the website. The registration date has been extended to December 11. Local residents Kate and Stephen Rymer (pictured with their family) are looking forward to the new service. “It will be a great thing for kitchen waste as well as grass clippings and weeds,” Mr Rymer said. “Putting these items into the normal rubbish bin is a real waste, because they can be composted and used as a fertiliser instead of sending them to landfill, which creates problems for the environment.”

school students shine a spotlight on life without education For the past two weeks Grant High School’s V-Gen group has been running workshops with Year 8, 9 and 10 students. The V-Gen group, consisting of students JamieLee Van Dijk, Ebony Ballintyne and Lily Thornley, has been showing students a documentary on the lives of 10 girls (aged 6-14) from third world countries. The documentary reinforces the importance of education and shows what life is like for girls who do not have access to it. These girls are often forced into arranged marriages or child labour; have children at a young age and are more likely to be sexually assaulted. The V-Gen group hopes to raise awareness about what it is like for girls in third world countries, and encourage Grant High School students to get involved in and/or support V-Gen events, such as the 40-Hour Famine and fundraising barbeques, as these events raise money to help give these girls an education help change their lives for the better. Coonawarra and Penola will once again celebrate the lead up to Christmas with a spirited ‘Stuffed Santa’ competition, sponsored by Balnaves of Coonawarra, and run by the Penola and District Business

Does your child rarely play with their toys at home? Kids and their parents are invited to visit the Mount Gambier Toy Library, following the recent delivery of some great new toys to add to the more than 600 toys already in the toy library’s collection. Toy Library president Jennifer Peterson said that thanks to the support of the Stand Like Stone Foundation the toy library was pleased to be able to add some new interesting and educational toys to its collection, including a Discovery Space Station and Lift-Off Rocket, a wooden dollhouse with family car, wooden magnetic dinosaurs, pony lacing toy, a circus play tent, toy ride-on motorbike and water play centre. The toy library is open on Mondays from 9.30-11.30am and Saturdays from 10-11.30am at the John Frew Centre, Frew Park, 48 Penola Road, Mount Gambier. The toy library is a not-for-profit organisation, run entirely by volunteers. The toy library is for all children, but the key age group is from six months to six years old. Membership fees start at $2.50 per child per term for concession memberships (made available through support from the Stand Like Stone Foundation), which enables each child to borrow two toys and one puzzle or game for a maximum of two weeks. The standard fee is $16.50 per term for one child, and $9 per term for each subsequent child, with a discounted membership available to volunteers. and Tourism Association. Following on from the success of the inaugural event last year, business owners and individuals are encouraged to place a Santa outside their business or home in the lead up to

Christmas. Many are already creating concepts to take home the coveted trophy, which was won by Rymill winery last year with Santa in a gliding plane. Last December, Santas perched in gliding planes, tractors, on swing sets, and surf boards. Other Santas enjoyed wine, barbecues, cappuccinos in the main street and other creative and funny pursuits. The competition exemplifies the community spirit in the region and showcases the imaginative and artistic minds. Kirsty Balnaves, from Balnaves of Coonawarra, said the Stuffed Santa Competition provided another great reason to visit the Coonawarra region. “When the word got out how fantastic the Santas looked, people began making day trips specifically to enjoy viewing the Santas in the lead up to Christmas,” she said. The concept was initially developed by Balnaves of Coonawarra, in conjunction with Deb Redman, owner of Must See Have Want Buy, in Penola. Santas will begin to decorate the region in early December and will remain in place until January 12. The trophy is currently on display at IGA Fresh Penola. Entry forms are available from Must See Have Want Buy and the Coonawarra Store.

“There is no more important deed for this government than creating a strong and prosperous economy, where lower taxes and less regulation will deliver greater business productivity and ensure more Australians experience the dignity of employment.” “I am proud Madam Speaker, that like the first four Members for Barker, John Bonython, John Livingston, and the Camerons Malcolm and Archie, I am the son of immigrants. I am a parochial Australian immensely proud of my Italian heritage. I honour the rich contribution immigrants have made to my home State of South Australia and the nation.” “I, like our former Prime Minister John Howard, consider my guiding philosophy to be a fusion of economic liberalism and social conservatism.”

I intend to use my skills not only for the betterment of my electorate but the cause of rural and regional Australia at large.” “Madam Speaker, as you know the Liberal Party boasts a strong heritage of rural representation, especially in seats like Barker. I hope to add to this rich pedigree in a way that will earn the respect of my political mentors and honour the memory of my

conducted himself during the period of transition in Barker. I wish Patrick and his wife Sharon every happiness for the future.” “An entrepreneurial spirit runs strong in Barker through the efforts of not only the primary production sector, but also the manufacturers who add value to the regions primary products and it should be said form the second largest group of employers, after primary producers, in the electorate. I speak here of businesses such as Naracoorte’s Mini Jumbuk, Mount Gambier’s NF McDonnell & Sons, the Riverland’s Nippy’s fruit juices, Bordertown’s Blue Lake Milling and Murray Bridge’s Thomas Foods International. Manufacturing does, however, face many challenges, as the recent closure of the Safries potato processing plant near Penola demonstrates. If we wish to capitalise on our competitive agricultural advantages and reap the benefits of the Asian century we must combat the strong headwinds facing this sector.” “I thank the people of Barker for the honour they have bestowed upon me and acknowledge that a heavy responsibility accompanies that privilege. I must say I am acutely aware of the weight of their expectation. To them I give this solemn pledge: I will be at all times your best advocate. I will steadfastly protect your interests and ardently champion your causes. In return, I ask the people of Barker to heed the guidance of Edmund Burke and trust me to apply my own intelligence, industry and judgment to their concerns.”

CRICKET Huge

Former Mount Gambier cricketer Matt Allen has earned the opportunity of a lifetime, being one of two community and development rookies signed to the Adelaide Strikers - the South Australian based Big Bash franchise. The 16 year old, who moved to Adelaide this year to further his sporting and academic career, attends St Peters College, and from a cricketing perspective the move has already paid off. In fact it’s been a huge week for the teenager, who was also named in the South Australian Under 17 State cricket team on Sunday, along with fellow South East talents Patrick Page and Ryan Hosking. But the Strikers signing is the huge news for the former Yahl cricketer. “I’m very excited and can’t wait to get into it,” Allen said. It is a huge coup for the hard hitting batsmen and medium paceman, given the development rookie positions are for players under 21 and Allen has only just turned 16. The community rookie is James Moss, a 24 year old with plenty of senior experience, including winning the player of the carnival at the past three Senior Country Carnivals. The teenager was offered the contract by high performance manager Jamie Cox more than a month ago but until the ink was dry, no announcement was made. The official media release from the

the likes of Johan Botha, Phillip Hughes, Shaun Tait and another rising star, 19 year old Travis Head is a opportunity money can’t buy. “What I will learn from working with these players will be amazing,” Allen said. “I am super excited to just get started.” He said he has no specific areas of his game that he will be looking to improve but rather lift all areas. “There is always something you can improve in your game, whether it’s your batting or bowling,” Allen said. “You can never practise fielding too much and I guess with the T20 format, I really want to work on the variation in my bowling.” The development rookie contract sees the young player training with the Strikers team, while not being available for selection. Allen will not travel with the Big Bash team but will be involved in some capacity on all match days when the Strikers line up at home. Allen has also been descrbed as a talented close-in fieldsman and identified already as a “future star for the Strikers”.

Multi-talented athlete James Dukalskis is only 14 years old but already has been named Sports SA Country Athlete of the Year twice. James was announced as the 2013 winner at a gala presentation event on Friday night in Adelaide, beating out his equally talented sister Olivia, and Yorke Peninsula cricketer James Moss. It was a huge weekend for the Dukalskis family with James and Olivia vying for the top gong on Friday night, with support from dad Kevin, while mum Megan was away in Queensland with the youngest of the talented trio, Sam, who is competing as part of the South Australian State SAPSASA athletics team at the national championships in Brisbane. For James, the victory caps another huge year of athletics, cricket, basketball and football success, highlighted with his selection in the Under 15 national AFL team that will tour South Africa early next year. James previously won the award in 2011, based mainly on his Little Athletics achievements, predominantly as a high jumper. It is also the fourth successive win for the South East region dating back to 2010 when swimmer Henry Crauford won the top honour, followed by James (2011) and then lawn bowler Heather Richards (2012), from Port MacDonnell. CYCLING

Comeback kid hopes victory kickstarts career revivial The first time Edward Bissaker knew he was a genuine chance to win the 2013 Alex Roberts 100 Mile Classic he was actually in a car. “I drove the course last night (Friday night) and I knew if the weather was wet and windy I would be a real chance,” Bissaker said. It was the 21 year old’s third visit to the Mount Gambier event but he had plenty of motivation to make this a successful one. His coach Tim Decker was the fastest time winner in 2000 and his good mate Glenn O’Shea is the 2011 champion and also clocked the fastest time in both 2011 and ’12. “I wanted to get amongst that as well,” he said. For Bissaker, too, this is was his first win in a year, having sat out much of the past 12 months with glandular fever. “I actually haven’t been training particularly hard or doing anything special,” Bissaker said. “When I’ve come here before it’s been preparation for the upcoming road series but today (Saturday) I really wanted to see what I could produce.” And what he produced was a textbook 100 mile victory in what Bissaker and many of his competitors described as the toughest 100 Mile they’ve ridden in. For the scratch bunch, of which Bissaker was a part, the race was tough from the get go – what would normally be a pack of around 20 riders

was only 14, making it harder to spread the workload. But that said, the conditions were in the top riders’ favour. “The inexperienced riders are not as good at coping with the wind so we (scratch bunch) knew we were a chance to reel the rest of them field in,” Bissaker said. And it was about 10 kilometres out of Port MacDonnell that the scratch bunch caught the rest of the field but with a head wind, breaking away was not an option. It was with 30 kilometres to go that Bissaker made his move, a solo breakaway which saw him battling the elements on his own for about five kilometres before a group of around half a dozen riders joined him for the run home. “We had a tail wind when I decided I needed to attack,” Bissaker said. “Even when the other riders joined me I felt like I was strong enough, it was a matter of biding my time and then powering to the finish.” Basically Bissaker stuck to his game plan, though – conserving what energy he could for this first two hours, including eating and drinking, and then upping the ante in the final 50 kilometres. “This is a prestigious race in South Australia and Victoria, in particular,” Bissaker said. “It means a lot to me to win this race and it means a lot to me this year.” Originally from Canberra, Bissaker made the move to Adelaide to work under respected coach Decker in 2010, with the glandular fever certainly derailing the former junior world champion’s career – he was part of the team pursuit winning team in 2011. He lost financial backing, although is actually now in the process of joining forces with a new

sponsor, and the setbacks certainly tested his passion for the sport. He headed to Belguim, racing in amateur competition for Bianchi Lotto Arbitage and now back on the bike in Australia, Bissaker is ready to rebuild. The National Track Omnium, in Melbourne, in mid December, is Bissaker’s next challenge, closely followed by the 2014 National Australian Road Championships, in Ballarat, in January. He is following a similar arc to his good mate O’Shea by working hard on the road to eventually crack national, and hopefully international, success. “I would like to make the Australian track team in the future so for now I’m just chipping away,” Bissaker said. Fellow scratch rider Nicholas Wood, from Port Adelaide, snuck home for second, from 33 minute Victorian rider Peter Riseley in what as a battle between half a dozen riders for the minor placings behind Bissaker. The best placed Mount Gambier Cycling & Triathlon Club rider was

His mother Heather has previously ridden the community event and always used it as a fundraiser for the Cancer Council so Jack decided with mum not competing, he would take up the challenge to turn his own personal challenge into a cancer fundraiser, starting with this Friday market at Plants On Sturt. Jack will be on site riding so people can meet the generous teenager on the day.

Wortley Oval, also in Naracoorte. The Mount Gambier Burdon Sheild team went into the final with only 10 available players due to unavailability and injury with Braydon Barker stepping in to help field a full side. Batting first after winning the toss and despite the slowish outfield, Jackson Lock dominated the opening stand scoring 24 of the first 34 runs. Jack Capewell (15) then joined Jack Gosling and

steadily pushed the score to 2/70 when Capewell departed. Gosling (20) departed after staying at the crease for 34 overs, ensuring that the team batted all of its overs. A hustling middle order of Nick Laube (22) and Jack Miller (12no) helped get the team to a final score of 8/137. The difficult conditions were reflected in that only two boundaries were scored for the innings. Lock, who finished with 3/9, and Riley Glynn, opened the bowling and each took an early wicket each to have Tatiara 2/1 and under pressure. Lock’s opening spell of five overs went for just 2 runs. Capewell (2/22)and Nick Walters (4/24) then kept up the pressure and both claimed crucial wickets. Tatiara was finally dismissed for 96 runs. Brodie Hewson and Nick Brown fielded to a high standard and saved many runs in the field. Tiia Pelkonen, Brad Close and Jack Geddes were the unavailable players on the day but played a huge role in the Millicent victory. In the Kerr Shield, Sam Von Duve got Mount Gambier off to a great start with his 28, while an unbeaten 51 from Bachmann ensured his side posted a formidable total of 7/162. Will Stafford led the way with the ball, finishing with 3/4 as Mount Gambier dismissed Tatiara form only 31 runs. TIKI ROOS AND HENLEY SHARKS CONTINUE TO BE THE PACESETTERS The Tiki Roos have consolidated their position on the top of the A grade ladder after round four of the Mount Gambier Touch summer mixed competition. The Roos didn’t have it all their own way, however, with the scores locked at two all at half time. The Roos looked flat and lacked penetration and the Suns took full advantage, with tries to Nick Moretti and Sam Schoenfisch, and an upset was on the cards. The Tiki Roos consolidated after half time however, and with tries to Dean Watson, Jacinta Clark, Matt Pilven and Jarryd Humphrys ran out victors 6-3. Hornets Red came into their contest with Tiki Blues full of confidence after their narrow win over MC Hammers the week before. The Blues proved to be stubborn opponents though and the scores were locked at 1 all for much of the first half. Late tries to Hamish Medhurst and Madison Donehue broke the deadlock and gave the Hornets a 3-1 lead at half time. The inexperienced Blues were unable to stem the flow after the half and Hornets ran in five tries to one to comfortably win the game, posting successive wins for the club. The MC Hammers faced a daunting task up against the rampant Henley Sharks. It wasn’t long before the Sharks stamped their authority on the match with both Brock and Sam Egan crossing the line three times to give the Sharks a 7-0 lead at the half. MC Hammers will be heartened by their second half efforts after a penalty try was awarded and a very clever pass found Brett Watson in the clear to keep the scores at 2-2 for the half. The Sharks class was overpowering, though, and posted a 9-2 win. MOUNT GAMBIER TOUCH ASSOCIATION ROUND THREE RESULTS A Grade Tiki Roos 6 (D. Watson 2; T. Guess, J. Clark, M. Pilven) d Suns 3 (N. motor MOTOR Australian Mazda6 has been awarded the prestigious ‘Judge’s Choice’ at Australia’s Best Cars 2013 and was also recognised as the country’s ‘Best Medium Car’ under $50,000. Launched last December, Mazda6 (pictured right) incorporates the stylish ‘KODO – Soul of Motion’ design language, it has tshe full suite of SKYACTIV Technologies and features i-ELOOP – Mazda’s unique brake energy regeneration system. Australia’s Best Cars 2013 was run by the nation’s peak motoring organisation – the Australian Automobile Association (AAA) - on behalf of the Royal Automobile Club of Victoria (RACV) and its equivalent motoring clubs in each State and Territory. Judges evaluate vehicles across a range of categories and it is designed to assist new car buyers with their choices

Best Car Awards handed out last week

and to set the standard for new vehicles on the market. Based on value for money, design and function and on the road performance, Mazda6 Touring was a clear winner in the ‘Best Medium Car under $50,000’ category and stood out ahead of every other car released over the past 12 months in winning the ‘Judges’ Choice’. “It ticked all the boxes that make it a benchmark car in its class and will influence the direction of its competitors,” AAA chief executive Andrew McKellar said. Mazda was delighted to win the ‘Judges’ Choice’, an award that Australia’s Best Cars said “recognises an affordable vehicle that has made the

greatest contribution to the Australian market or is deemed by the judges as the stand-out winner either through its technology, safety, innovation or ability to meet or exceed consumer expectation”. Mazda Australia director of marketing Alastair Doak said of all the awards, it is the Australia’s Best Cars ‘Judges’ Choice’ that acknowledges the passion and excitement that great cars generate.“Mazda always strives to inject passion, innovation and creativity into all of its products, so it’s great to see the Mazda6, and Mazda’s engineers and designers, rewarded for this effort,” he said.

Mazda6 has also recently won Japan’s prestigious RJC ‘Car of the Year’, and American publication Popular Mechanics also voted the popular midsize as its ‘Car of the Year’. In other awards, it was another successful year for Volkswagen (pictured centre right) at the Australia’s Best Car Awards. The recently launched Golf GTI took out the ‘Best Sports Car under $50,000’ category while the Touareg was once again named ‘Best Luxury SUV’. “With the Golf GTI topping the sports car category and the Touareg winning the luxury SUV segment, it really does go to show the wide range of exceptional vehicles

Volkswagen has on offer today,” said Volkswagen Group Australia’s managing director John White. Subaru’s new generation All-Wheel Drive Forester 2.5i (pictured top right) has been named Best Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) under $45,000 at the awards. Subaru Australia managing director Nick Senior said Forester was the original Compact Sports Utility Vehicle when it was launched in 1997 and pioneered this class of vehicle. “While many have followed since, Forester’s sales success is a clear indication that its fantastic combination of durability, safety, great engineering and refinement have made it an ongoing winner for Subaru,” he said “Since its debut Forester has always been innovative, with landmarks like being the first SUV with a five-star ANCAP rating.” Hyundai received two coveted Australia’s Best Car awards, for the i30 Active Hatch (pictured bottom right) and Santa Fe Highlander CRDi, in the Small Car under $35k and SUV$45k-$65k categories

operating officer John Elsworth. “Both models are enjoying great success, and these accolades go a long way to reaffirm why Australian buyers are turning to Hyundai.”

respectively.“Again, Hyundai has proven to have an appealing combination of features and value with i30 and Santa Fe winning awards for consecutive years,” said Hyundai Motor Company Australia chief
