COVER From

lumberjacks to silverware - just another year at the Mount Gambier Show

The Lumberjack Show is going to be one of the featured events at the 2013 Mount Gambier A&H Spring Show in what is one of sport’s fiercest rivalries. The world’s two best speed climbers to the Southern Hemisphere will go head to head with the best in timber sports on display. Eight time World Champion speed climber Brian Bartow and current World Champion Stirling Hart share a fierce rivalry that will be on show at the

Mount Gambier Show. Between them, these two climbers hold multiple world records, and odds are on that they will set a few more records on tour. And the suprises and highlights continue. In a major coup for the Limestone Coast, the Australian Open tennis trophies will be brought to Mount Gambier for the official opening day of the A&H Spring Show. Locals will be able to line up for a once-in-a-lifetime photo opportunity with

the Norman Brookes Challenge Cup and Daphne Akhurst Memorial Trophy when the AO Blitz roadshow rolls into town as part of its national tour. The striking silverware, which will be awarded to the men’s and women’s singles champions during the January Grand Slam tournament in Melbourne, will be on display at the Pick Avenue Show Grounds for one day only - on Friday, October 25. However, a series of tennisthemed give-aways and challenges will be available throughout the entire show, including Speed Serves and Hot Shots complete with mini tennis courts. A & H Society president Peter Woodruff said the AO Blitz was an exciting new attraction for this year’s event. “The kids will love testing out their serve speeds and so will the adults, while the chance to get a photo with the winners’ trophies is also pretty special,” he said. The 2013 Mount Gambier Spring Show is now less than a fortnight away, and the final entries for many of the exhibits are now being received by the A&H Society. Horticultural class submissions will close on October 16, and organisers are expecting as many as 600 individual entries.

This year is the “Year of the Rose”, with a $50 Banner voucher on offer for Grand Champion Rose, plus extra prize money for other rose categories including Exhibition Roses, Floribunda Roses, Austin Roses and Miniature Roses. “There are also lots of novelty classes, including a fruit and vegetable creature, the deadest pot plant or the best weed, and one of the new classes to the schedule is a sculpture made from recycled materials suitable for a garden environment,” said A&H horticultural committee chair Mary-Anne Sheppard. Floral design will feature novice, intermediate, open and commercial sections, and projects include a table setting, a design featuring wood, and a design in a cup and saucer. A Scarecrow Competition will feature a $15 Banner Hardware voucher as first prize, while junior classes suitable for school students include the best decorated orange or potato using only agricultural or horticultural materials, floral carpet in wet sand, and miniature garden. “There are also categories to suit most flowers, plants and vegetables; you can enter orchids, fuchsias, bonsai, begonias, ferns, cacti, succulents, roses,

night in with a twist

The countdown is on to this year’s ‘Girls Night In’ – except this year the girls can bring their blokes. East Gambier Sportsmans Club will host this year’s get together on Saturday, October 19, to raise money for the Cancer Council. After an outstanding success last year, organisers have decided to expand the concept to allow those attending to ‘bring a bloke’. The evening will include plenty of entertainment, with performances by Open House, Danni Jones and Trouble Shooter. There will

to secure in house jazz concert success of the event, most of the commercial accommodation properties are fully booked months in advance, leaving little or no accommodation for people wishing to visit and attend the event, not as participants, but as audience members. City of Mount Gambier Team Leader Visitor Information, Lisa Braes said once the scheme has been set up for the event it is envisaged that it will be implemented for other peak periods when accommodation is difficult to find. “Many

visitors end up staying many kilometres away driving daily to attend events, by implementing this scheme more visitors will be able to stay in Mount Gambier,” Ms Braes said. “Homeowners and members of the public are being invited to host visitors within their home during Generations in Jazz and after that, other such events.” Participants in the Homestay program will be offered the opportunity to opt in and out for each major event, and might only offer their accommodation once a year. “The

Lady Nelson” Visitor Information Centre are working with local website RoomsHere.com to develop a listing of community accommodation, to be known as the Mount Gambier Community Accommodation Hub. Interested participants should contact The Lady Nelson Visitor and Discovery Centre in the first instance, where they can obtain an information pack, which will help them decide if they are still interested in participating in this worthwhile scheme.

CATCH OF THE DAY - Carla Caruso After a regrettable incident at the office Christmas party, up-and-coming fashion editor, Winnie Cherry, is banished to coastal South Australia to set up a beach lifestyle magazine – 300km from nowhere. Her friends joke that she’ll marry a rich cray fisherman and stay there for good, but Winnie has other ideas. Determined to get back to Sydney within two months, she gets to work and starts counting down the days. Until she meets handsome freelance photographer Alex Bass, and sparks begin to fly. As Winnie is increasingly drawn into the close-knit local community, she starts to question whether city life is really what she wants. That is, until Alex drops a bombshell that casts dark storm clouds over all her coastal dreams Carla Caruso was born in Adelaide, grew up amid a boisterous extended Italian family – yet somehow managed to become a bookworm... Carla always wanted to be a novelist, annoying the kindergarten teachers by dictating long, detailed stories to them. It just took her a while to realise her childhood dream - journalism seemed a more practical course. Her media career has included stints as a newspaper and magazine journalist, government PR and fashion stylist. These days, she works as a freelance journalist and copywriter. She began seriously writing fiction three years ago when she went freelance full-time. The romance genre appeals as she is a sucker for rom-coms (especially if Channing Tatum is in the mix) and likes to think her Italian ancestry means she lives with passion. Hobbies include watching trashy TV shows, fashion (her mum named her after Carla Zampatti!), astrology and running. She lives in Adelaide.

COLLECTED STUPIDITY

September 21 – November 17 - Thomas Clark – The Wannon Falls and Beyond HAMILTON ART GALLERY, HAMILTON The Wannon Falls and Beyond is the first comprehensive exhibition showcasing one of Australia’s great colonial artists, Thomas Clark. This will be the first major survey of the artist’s accomplished, yet mysterious, career and brings together his most significant works.

My body and I are not on great terms at the moment. My body seems to have decided that it doesn’t really care about the quality of my life moving forward. I think it’s angry at me but I have absolutely no idea why. Let me begin by saying I’m not a vain man. When you look like me, you really can’t afford to think appearances are important. It began a fair while ago now when I had to buy increasingly large shirts. I was prepared to take the blame for this one. I was the one concentrating on only one of the food groups (fats and sugars) so realistically I wasn’t giving my body any choice other than expansion. By the way, to all of the fast food restaurants who think they are being responsible letting us know how many kilojoules are found in each of your menu items, I know what you’re doing. You’re all telling us that the average adult daily intake is 8700kj. The average adult is obese, so presumably we all need to be aiming

Dear Body by Robbie Tansel

for less than 8700, not thinking we’re just an average adult for consuming that much. Not long after the waist expansion, I started to notice the hair growing on my back and this was definitely when I started to think that my body was making a statement of some kind. I was prepared to let it slide though as I couldn’t see the hair. Hair problems continued when I started noticing an unnecessary abundance accumulating in my nose. I was in a phase of my life where I was trying to look on the positive side of things so I decided that plucking was a perfectly acceptable activity on nights where there wasn’t much on TV. But my body wasn’t finished. Apparently my body was creating hair issues in a northerly direction as I started to notice stray hairs protruding from my eyebrows. My body was somehow miraculously able to grow hair four times as long as any other hair in my eyebrow which stuck out at bizarre angles. I continued to be the bigger man though and didn’t make a big deal out of the problem. Even when my body started

slowly eliminating hair from the top of my head, presumably to make up for the bonus hair it was giving me everywhere else (did I mention my ears?) I was still prepared to play nice. With this in mind my body decided to give hair terrorism one last crack by changing the colour of random follicles grey. I must have been going through another positive stage though as I decided that it made me look distinguished and mature. If you can’t be mature it’s at least good to look mature. The next line of attack was a series of what looked like knife carvings stretching from the corner of my eyes and half way to my ears. I’ve seen enough of Sam Newman on The Footy Show to know that the alternative to these wrinkles is a much more ridiculous look to carry with you though so again I put up with it. As you can see, I coped with all these unnecessary attacks maturely and with dignity. Until Saturday…On Saturday I decided I would mow my backyard jungle. I did the responsible thing and applied sun cream (I don’t need my body to create any other issues). As I was applying the sun cream I noticed a

ALL DIGITAL HEARING “br inging s peech into focus ”

couple of hairs I presumed had come from my cranium that the cream seemed to have stuck to the top of my ears. You all know what’s going to happen next don’t you? That’s right. They were growing out of the top of my ears! The inside of my ears? Coped with it. The bottom of my ears? Seemed to make sense considering gravity. But the top of my ears?! That’s just ridiculous. Considering we know that the body generally places hair on extremely important body parts that need to be protected from the cold, someone is going to have to explain to me why my body prioritised the top of my ear with three random hairs. Anyway, I will be getting revenge on my body. I may start with my kidneys. If you have a body like me, email me at robbietansel@gmail.com Maybe we should start a support group or something.

the praises of upcoming fundraiser

When you think country cricket club fundraiser, your immediate thoughts don’t shift to fine wine and canapés, accompanied by 50 stirring voices of Australia’s largest Male Welsh Choir - and you most certainly wouldn’t place them in a woolshed in Dunkeld. Well, the Grampian’s Cricket Club did, and what a spectacular they have in store. Tired of the same old wood chop and BBQ fundraisers, the tiny club are shaking things up in the 450 person SouthWest farming and tourist town, and are planning an evening to remember. This Friday will see a once in a lifetime event, where guests will be treated to champagne and canapés in the magnificent setting of Dunkeld’s historic farming property ‘Devon Park’, and then seated in the Woolshed for the

choral delights one of Australian’s most highly regarded Welsh Choirs. Whilst male, female and junior cricket players will trade their bat and ball for aprons, corkscrews and platters, fortunately the baton will be left in the capable hands of choir experts, whose performance history includes the London Olympic Games. The choir will perform a spectacular mix of old and new, from stirring hymns to modern classics of the opera, stage and film genres, appealing to a wide range of musical tastes. Being the premier event of the popular Discover Dunkeld Spring festival, the night will be a celebration of music, arts and culture in a magical and historic setting. According to Grampians Cricket Club president Adrian Kelly

it is hard to find ways to both fundraise and bring something to the community that hasn’t already been done, and that people will get a real kick out of. “Cricket clubs and choirs don’t usually mix, but inviting the choir to Dunkeld seemed like a good way to raise money for our club and promote the region in conjunction with the Discover Dunkeld ethos of arts and culture,” he said. Discover Dunkeld is annual festival that celebrates the food, wine, art, history and nature of the region, attracting more than 3000 people last year and tipped to grow again in 2013. “Representatives from the choir have already been to the woolshed and are suitably impressed with the acoustics they will have to work with,” the president said. “We’re really excited, because

October 2013 NewsleƩer WELCOME Welcome to the Spring edi on of my Newsle er. Through my newsle er I aim to keep you informed of recent happenings in Parliament and the Electorate and I welcome comment and feedback on any aspect and feel free to contact either myself or my electorate staff with any complaints, concerns and compliments you have. www.donpegler.com.au PATIENT ASSISTANCE TRANSPORT SCHEME (PATS) UPDATE

Dr David Filby, who is undertaking the review that I requested of the Pa ent Assistance Transport Scheme (PATS), visited Mount Gambier recently. Dr Filby met with members of the Mount Gambier cancer support group and community financial advisor representa ves to hear first hand issues and concerns regarding the current scheme. MOTOR VEHICLE (LEARNERS PERMITS & PROVISIONAL LICENSES) AMENDMENT BILL The Bill proposes a number of changes to the current Graduated Licensing Scheme (GLS) with the intent of saving the lives of young drivers/riders and passengers. The key ini a ves in the Bill include a passenger restric on for P1 drivers allowing no more than one passenger aged 16 to 20 years for the dura on of their P1 licence; a night- me driving restric on for P1 drivers between midnight and 5 am for the dura on of their P1 licence and extending the total minimum Provisional licence period from two to three years. Under this Bill there will be exemp ons for drivers carrying their siblings, neighbours’ children or children from other families to and from school. There will also be exemp ons for drivers if they need to drive for employment, including formal volunteer work, educa on, training and spor ng purposes. The restric ons do not apply if the P1 driver is aged over 25 or if a qualified supervising driver is present in the vehicle. Many young people in the Mount Gambier Electorate commence work prior to 5am in the morning, par cularly as deckhands, dairy hands, farm hands, etc. As a result of

this bill, there could be a minimal number of these people who will no longer be able to take more than one other person aged between 16 and 19 years of age to work. They will s ll be able to go to work at those hours (between midnight and 5am) if they are actually going to work. I have never supported the calls to increase the driving age as it would be a great restric on on young people in the country, par cularly for them to go to work and to spor ng events, etc. I would prefer to see them s ll being able to get their P1 licence as current legisla on with restric ons, rather than increasing the age. I support any moves that will save the lives of our young people, but we must be careful not to over-restrict them in going about their legal ac vi es. ELECTORAL (FUNDING, EXPENDITURE AND DISCLOSURE) AMENDMENT BILL A Bill currently before Parliament aims to address public confidence in the electoral process by introducing a number of reforms to address transparency and accountability during an elec on campaign period. The Electoral (Funding, Expenditure and Disclosure) Amendment Bill 2013 was introduced by the A orney-General John Rau with amendments that includes the introduc on of a public funding scheme that will allow for par al reimbursements to candidates and poli cal par es for poli cal expenditure during a campaign. Candidates and poli cal par es who opt into this scheme will be subject to caps on their campaign expenditure. Importantly a regulatory disclosure scheme will be introduced that requires disclosure of certain financial informa on over $5,000. I have always been a great believer in transparency and accountability in the elec on process and I believe this Bill addresses the requirement that all poli cal par cipants disclose the gi s and dona ons they receive valued over $5,000. I strongly support the Bill as far as the disclosures, expenditure caps, accoun ng and repor ng scheme are concerned. I do have one issue with the Bill and that is I am strongly against taxpayer’s money going into a scheme to fund poli cal par es and elec on campaigns. The Bill requires poli cal par es to nominate for public funding two years out from the Elec on, therefore regardless of whom that Party’s candidate is, you know they will be subject to public funding rules. Both the Liberal and Labor par es supported each other on the Bill. They spoke a lot about transparency, accountability and repor ng processes but put very li le emphasis on the fact that both par es would receive around

$2 million each to run their par es and elec ons and in future have to do very li le fundraising. I feel this money would be far be er spent on services such as the Pa ent Assistance Transport Scheme rather than poli cians and poli cal par es. LIQUOR LICENSING (MISCELLANEOUS) AMENDMENT BILL I support the inten on of the proposed Liquor Licensing (Miscellaneous) Amendment Bill to curb excessive alcohol consump on and alcohol related violence. The new code of prac ce under the Liquor Licensing Act which came into force in January this year requires clubs to undertake a risk assessment and develop a management plan with staff and volunteers comple ng training on the management plan. One of the problems I have with these types of bills is that o en they have very detrimental effects on some of our very small clubs. The training requirement for responsible service of alcohol whilst under sec on 71(1a) there is no fee for those small clubs, the cost to get each person trained can be quite onerous on those very small clubs. I do note that under sec on 97(2), with those clubs that do have a limited scope of business there can be an exemp on granted by the Liquor Licensing Authority. I also support strongly the proposal to have an industry-wide approval for the licensing of responsible persons as o en it is the same people who will help at different clubs. POWERS OF ATTORNEY AND AGENCY ACT 1984 Parliament recently passed changes to the Powers of A orney and Agency Act 1984 to recognise enduring powers of a orney made in other States and Territories. This Bill is an extremely important piece of legisla on for the people in the Mount Gambier Electorate par cularly as we are close to the Victorian border. Lack of mutual recogni on of enduring powers of a orney has been a problem in the past with interstate enduring powers of a orney’s not being recognised under SA legisla on. AMENDMENTS TO THE EQUAL OPPORTUNITIES ACT These amendments passed through Parliament allowing the con nua on of same-sex lawn bowls compe ons. I was contacted by quite a few bowlers in my electorate and I was pleased to see the Equal Opportunity (Spor ng Compe ons) Amendment Bill come before Parliament. It was an absolute nonsense that a ban to separate male and female bowls compe ons could have been enforced under the Equal Opportunity Act.

MOUNT GAMBIER SUICIDE PREVENTION NETWORK ACTION PLAN

This is the first such network to do so and I applaud the commitment of the City of Mount Gambier and the Mount Gambier Suicide Preven on Network for this collabora on of effort. Suicide preven on is everybody’s business and we need to persist with breaking down the s gma associated with depression, mental illness and personal crisis so people will seek help early. I wish the City of Mount Gambier and the Network success in all their endeavours to tackle suicide and the impact of suicide in our community. LOCAL Dialysis

unit set for a windfall

This year’s Byaduk Spring Show on Saturday, November 2, will be the 107th show, and with spring on the doorstep, the gardens will be bursting with colour. The Byaduk Hall will be filled with flowers from the local gardens. The show will open at 1.30pm with the official opening and trophy presentations, followed by afternoon tea at 2pm. This year, the nominated charity is St. Vincent’s Hospital, Melbourne, raising funds to go towards the Dialysis Unit. Organisers are delighted that Emmet O’Flaherty, Renal Access and Pre Dialysis Co-ordinator with the St Vincent’s hospital, will be opening the show this year. Mr O’Flaherty’s role is varied within the unit, but essentially he is one of the renal nurses and helps organise his patient’s progress on to dialysis, from introducing their treatment options (types of dialysis, transplant, supportive care) to organising their operations. The Dialysis Unit is very close to the district’s hearts, with Macarthur local, Bruce Addinsall receiving regular treatment from this centre. Bruce has been travelling to St Vincent’s over the past couple of years for dialysis treatment, and is currently in

hospital for a five week treatment. Bruce, along with his wife Sandra, and daughters Laura and Kate are always the first ones to put up their hands to help in the community. They are very generous with their time. It is great that the local community can support this unit, to help make a difference to lives such as Bruce. Each year the Spring Show committee nominate charities to work towards, and this year we will work hard to promote the show to raise much needed funds for the dialysis unit. Entry fee of $5 adults and $2 students includes a wonderful afternoon tea, and viewing of some exquisite floral masterpieces and arrangements. The creative craft is extensive and the photography makes fabulous viewing. The extensive list of

categories making up the schedule include, Cut Flowers, Roses, Floral Art, Cookery and Produce, Handcraft and Photography. The sections include Pre Primary, Primary, Secondary and Open Sections. Children can be involved with the decorated wooden spoon, decorated marie biscuits, bunch of pretty flowers, decorated egg, 6 eggs, decorated cup cake, decorated parcel etc. The show has some wonderful new categories, including arrangement using succulents, head piece with flowers, plate of three scones, article of papercraft, and a diorama. Photography is also a highlight, with the ‘favourite pet’, ‘best holiday photo’, and of course ‘funniest photo’. There is also the Brenda Millard Perpetual Trophy for Champion Rose of the Show, the Mavis

Haylock Perpetual Trophy for Champion Cut Flower entry, the Cecily & Frank Holcombe Perpetual Trophy for Best Exhibit – Floral Art, and the Shirley Gibson Champion Children’s exhibitor. It will be a wonderful family day for the community. There will be a variety of stalls selling products. A sausage sizzle will be available, and children’s activities. All entries in the show are to be registered on Friday, November 1, by 8pm and entries in place on Saturday morning by 10.45am. Schedules and stall enquiries are available from Jo Moore 0429 787 258 and further details of the show are available from Sarah Baker on 0411 483 932. Come and join in the Byaduk family day raising funds for the St. Vincent’s Hospital Dialysis Unit.

save the date November 2 - Byaduk Spring Show - Byaduk Hall, Louth Swamp Road - 1.30-5pm - A unique family fun day with activities and competitions for all. From flowers to produce, from children’s activities to arts and craft stalls, there is something for everyone.

LOCAL Countdown There is something for everyone at this year’s Upwelling Festival on Saturday, November 2,on Portland’s foreshore. Upwelling Festival chairperson Patsy Moore said the committee had worked hard to secure a good mix of entertainment and activities – for adults and kids alike. “Portland’s foreshore will be alive with colour, sound and activities and we are excited to be presenting such a vibrant program for the community and visitors - and it’s all free,’ Ms Moore said. “We thought it was important to bring some funky children’s entertainment to make sure the day truly is a family day. The Mudcakes come with an international reputation for organic, adult friendly kids music with songs all about the wild and wonderful ride of family life in styles ranging from Hawaiian to reggae and garage rock.” The Mudcakes will also be holding a ‘Kazoo Jam’ workshop where children under eight learn to play a kazoo plus decorate it and take it home. Also for the young, the South West TAFE Children’s services activities run all day and there will be a special fun and interactive ‘Small’ Talk’

about blue whales and the Bonney Upwelling. Ausdance are bringing their ‘Alice Project’ to Portland, much of it to be delivered on Festival day where people can participate in learning a dance routine and join in a ‘Mad Hatters Tea Party’. Everyone will be able to enjoy and interact with the 9Knitted Narrabans ‘9KN’ major art project, funded by the Regional Arts Victoria, where large contemporary structures shaped like traditional Gunditjimara eel traps will be hung from foreshore light poles. The Portland community has been busy donating 1000 Tshirts and helping to strip them down and finger knit them into ‘yarn balls’ which will then be woven using traditional weaving techniques into the framed traps. As a part of the seasonal upwelling cycle, short-finned eels migrate in the ocean from New Caledonia to breed upstream in local rivers. Local indigenous people, the Gunditjmara, traditionally exploited this food source by ‘trapping’ eels in woven coneshaped ‘baskets’, called a ‘Narraban’. To link in with this subject, the Marine Environment Talks will host guest speaker

Lachlan McKinnon who will talk about the life cycle and migration of shortfinned eels. Dr Andrew Levings will present on the Rock Lobster, giant crabs and the impact of the Bonney Upwelling and Dr Peter Gill will deliver a general introduction to the Bonney Upwelling and blue whales. Highlights of the live entertainment will be popular sister act, The Little Stevies, who will

charm and move you with their luscious harmonies above striking melodies and catchy guitar hooks. Also on the bill is “Ukelele Queen of the Bellarine” Sarah Carroll with Marcel Borrack, The Distractors from Mount Gambier and local acts Southbound Three and Jess Gordon. Of course the day kicks off with the traditional Blessing of the Fleet and free breakfast on the trawler wharf and the much loved quality markets will be running all day showcasing interesting and delicious products from around the region. Schools and community groups have been preparing for the street parade, which is upwelling themed and not to be missed. Whale boat teams from around the region will be competing on Portland’s harbour, adding much colour and excitement to the foreshore and the Port of Portland are offering bus tours of the working port. For a full program rundown go to the website www.upwelling festival.com.au In its fifth year, the festival is based on the theme of the Bonney Upwelling and is managed by the Rotary Club of Portland Bay. The free day time event on the foreshore celebrates what is unique about Portland and the community and show cases an important local environmental phenomenon.

LOCAL Secret About a fortnight out from the Mount Gambier A&H Spring Show, Mary-Anne (pictured below) and Stephen Sheppard take a stroll around their sprawling Mil Lel garden, looking for plants or flowers worthy of possible entry in any of the show’s 220 adult horticultural classes. Nominations for this year’s event close on

to show success October 16, with judging set to take place between 9am1pm on the opening day of the show (Friday, October 25). Mary-Anne, who is chair of the Mount Gambier A&H Society’s Horticultural Committee, says it takes a fair bit of guesswork to pick a potential winner so far in advance. “We’re looking for a perfect flower that has no

blemishes or bug marks on the petals or leaves, and one that is sitting so that it’s going to actually face the judge rather than point up or down,” she said. The Sheppards tend to favour natives and pot plants, and the night before the show, they select four or five of each variety for closer scrutiny. (If rain is forecast, they might even pick them a little earlier and store them in a vase in the fridge). “We spread them all out over the kitchen bench and then narrow them down in order to fill one or two spaces, with a couple of spares,” Mary-Anne said. “We then wait till the very last minute to make our final decision as you will always have ones that you can’t show as they haven’t quite come out or are past it.” It is a system that

clearly works – last year, the couple won the inaugural Supreme Champion ribbon for a favourite Hares Foot fern. Their four-year-old son also entered a junior horticulture section for the first time in 2012, and was awarded a first prize. “We tend to show mostly natives and pot plants; however we dabble in a wide range of classes including roses, vegetables, succulents, citrus and carnations,” Mary-Anne said. When Mary-Anne and Stephen first started entering the show, they used to submit about eight entries, but now, they’re up to “about 50”. Horticulture is one of the most widely contested classes at the show; while variations in seasonal conditions can impact on entry numbers, it isn’t unusual to see 600 different exhibits in the adult and junior classes. “Most of the entries are quite local; Mount Gambier, Millicent, Penola and Dartmoor, as plants don’t tend to travel too well,” Mary-Anne says. “And while a lot of our exhibitors are regulars, we always welcome newcomers and would encourage anyone who has a garden to enter. We have test tubes to display them in – people can come in on the Thursday night or early on the Friday morning of the show, and then stage them with the help of the stewards.”

LOCAL Veteran

poultry man

Ken Scott could definitely be classed as a show veteran – he’s been a regular fixture in the poultry pavilion at Mount Gambier’s A&H Spring Show for more than 70 years. “One bloke came up to me last year and said ‘are you still around?’” he said, with a smile. The 77 year old’s passion for poultry began at the tender age of five, when a family friend gave him a Partridge Wyandotte Bantam to enter in the show. “The lady’s name was Mrs Eldridge and it was one of her top fowls, and every time I entered it, I got a first prize, so that started me off and I was hooked after that,” he said. “They grow on you – they’re a lovely little thing.” Ken estimates that he has collected more than one thousand ribbons over the past seven decades, from shows mainly across South Australia and Victoria. “I mainly stuck to those two states as otherwise it’s too far to travel, but birds I have bred and then sold have won in every state of Australia,” he says. While he has had success with just about every breed you can imagine, he’s been particularly lucky with his Old English Games – a breed often referred to as the ‘King of Fowls’. “They used to breed them for fighting, but when that all

stopped, they made them into exhibition birds and that really took off,” he said. “They’re proud, they’ve got a really nice full front on them, a flat back and a good arch to the wings – you’ve got to breed them to a standard with good balance and leg placement, and it takes years to get them up to that standard.” Rosecomb bantams are another of Ken’s favourites. “They’re one of the oldest

natural breeds in the world, and they’re a magnificent, majestic little black bird with a lovely tail,” he said. “The tail feathers should cover a 20 cent piece and they have got to have a lovely comb with a lovely round lobe that’s fairly full with nice round edges and a squared off front.” With such a terrific eye for detail, Ken has judged at all the major shows across Australia, and there aren’t too many country shows he hasn’t been to. “I used to drive trucks for a living and tried to work my shifts so that if I was coming from Sydney on a weekend and there was a country show on, I’d be able to go. I met a lot of people doing that,” he said. Ken will be working as a steward during this year’s Mount Gambier A&H Spring Show, and he’s expecting about 300 entries in the poultry pavilion. “It’s very competitive – if you get beaten, you get beaten, but you make sure that you win the following year, so there will be a lot of people with that goal in mind,” he said. “But realistically, once the bird is in the pen, it’s up to them – you can’t do anymore than that.” Ken’s son-in-law will be travelling down from Keith to show some of his ‘offspring’, but the poultry veteran is happy to watch from the sidelines, and simply soak up the atmosphere. “I’ll always be a part of the Mount Gambier Poultry and Pigeon Club, but I really want to step back from competing and stick to giving advice and support,” he says. “I reckon I’ve had a good go – a real good go, actually.”

SUPERCROSS Thrills

and spills as hometown hero crashes out There was no fairytale ending for Mount Gambier supercross rider Kirk Gibbs when he crashed out of the final of Saturday night’s round three action of the Australian Supercross Championships at the Borderline Speedway. In front of his home crowd, Gibbs was one of the early pacesetters and looked set for a strong result after impressive runs ion qualifying and the heat but he crashed out of the main race, denying himself a chance of a podium finish in his hometown. Gibbs was not seriously hurt and is expected to take his place in the Phillip Island round this weekend. American Josh Hill took out the race, clearly putting the bike set-up issues experienced in Darwin behind him. Hill looked much more comfortable in practice and carried the momentum into the main.

CRICKET

Although championship leader Matt Moss came out firing with the holeshot, an uncharacteristic error led to a small crash, costing vital time and places. Hill took the lead and from there he was never headed. Weston Peick did his best to chase him down, but never got close enough to attack. Jake Moss rounded out the podium. He could have probably challenged for the win, but a couple of errors cost him the chance. Luke Styke was gifted the win in the Lites when Gavin Faith crashed on the last lap. Faith was comfortably in the lead (by about a second) and would remount to take fourth. It looked like Brenden Harrison would just miss the podium when Ryan Marmont passed him on the last lap, but Faith’s crash opened the path for a re-pass. Consequently, he took second and his first podium in a long while. Marmont rounded out the top three.
