new look Mangos store coming soon

Eight years ago Kelly Waters was looking for a new challenge and armed with her background of office work and retail she bought established Mount Gambier fashion house Mangos, which has now been part of the Mount Gambier retail landscape for two decades. “I really wanted the challenge of running a business and Mangos was on the market at the time I started looking,” Kelly said. “I have loved every minute, learning on the job and really developing a love for fashion.” And now Kelly and the Mangos team are taking on a new

challenge, embracing the technological revolution that sees Mangos setting up a second store - online. “We have already noticed the difference in the past couple of quarters since we set up a facebook page and we will be online at the end of this month,” Kelly said. “You have to get with the times and use social media and new technology if you want your business to keep succeeding.” Kelly believes in no limitations regardless of where your shopfront might be located and the online store will offer the same incredible range

and service that the Commercial Street West store and staff, Naomi Ferguson, Moira Wright and Ilana Adam, have always provided. Boasting more than 30 labels, Mangos prides itself on being multigenerational, offering styles and trends for mothers, daughters and grand daughters. Mangos is also a store with a range of price points suiting every shopper and their budget. So whether you are looking to frock up for the Spring racing carnival, need the latest look for your upcoming graduation or awards presentation night, or just want to

update your wardrobe, Mangos has the perfect outfit at the perfect price. Stocking casual wear, racewear, formal attire, after five, evening wear and an ever expanding range of bridesmaids and mother of the bride and groom options, Mangos can dress you for every occasion. Kelly and the team have always prided themselves on offering the highest quality service, helping you find that perfect outfit and providing a good range of accessories to further complement your look. Mangos also caters for a wide range of shapes and sizes - they believe style is something everyone deserves and can afford. save the date October 16 – January 26 - Take Two Fresh Eggs - HAMILTON ART GALLERY, HAMILTON - Kitchen queens Kate McDonald and Roz Greenwood have joined forces to curate an exhibition looking at the evolution of modern cuisine through its depiction in cookbooks and the concurrent development of kitchen implements up to the present day.

the focus of new regional golf program

The Golf South East Girls Golf Club was launched at Naracoorte last Monday by Golf SA development coach Allan Telford and special guest coach PGA professional Melanie Bryden. Golf South East officials were ecstatic with the response from the girls throughout the region with 21 girls enjoying the inaugural try golf day and plenty of interest from others around the Limestone Coast. The experience of Telford in developing junior golf and the excitement created by the highly credentialed Bryden was ideal to launch this new program. Bryden with world class experience after a stellar amateur career proved she is also a top class coach and had the girls excited from the minute she introduced herself. Following on from this day Golf South East ran another session this Tuesday with Naracoorte professional Michael Justin continuing the great kickstart Telford and Bryden gave to the Golf South East’s newest initiative. For further information call Mary Winser 0438 057 435 or Dwayne Baker 0402 814 572. Right (top) - The 21 girls that took advantage of Golf SE’s new golf program. regional competition set to kick off The Mount Gambier Lakers are set to start their conference title defence when they suit up again in Basketball Victoria’s Country Basketball League, with Dallas Jeffree taking over the reins of the men’s team from multi title winning coach Kym Hammond. Three regional Conferences will again compete in Country Victoria’s premier senior men’s and omen’s Basketball Championships in the 2013/14 season. They are North East, Gippsland and South West, which is the conference in which the Lakers compete. Gippsland features the big winners of last season in Warragul Warriors and Traralgon T-Birds, who won their Conference and All Conference titles and are now ready to defend their dual championship mantles. The Mount Gambier Lakers Men are working hard in preparation to defend their 2012/13 Conference title. Simon Berkefeld is back on the training track after his serious football injury and appears to be in scintillating form. Matt Berkefeld has also made a big improvement as a member of the Pioneers’ squad this year. Jak Ryan is likely to shoulder a fair slice of the inside work along with former State junior Cameron Millard. Mitch Mott is not likely to be available for the full season. The experience of Michael Stephens and Joe Ferguson-Lane will be valuable and complement the efforts of Matt Parslow and teammates. Dylan Bromley is expected to join the squad this season. He is strong off the boards and a consistent scorer inside the keyway. Unfortunately there were insufficient numbers available to field a CBL Women’s side. The CBL season begins around regional Victoria this Saturday when the Lakers have a double header road trip. They meet the Horsham Hornets on their home court on the Saturday and then travel to Stawell on the Sunday.

COLLECTED STUPIDITY

September 21 – November 17 - Thomas Clark – The Wannon Falls and Beyond HAMILTON ART GALLERY, HAMILTON The Wannon Falls and Beyond is the first comprehensive exhibition showcasing one of Australia’s great colonial artists, Thomas Clark. This will be the first major survey of the artist’s accomplished, yet mysterious, career and brings together his most significant works.

This is one of these articles where as I sit here writing it I know I don’t know enough about my subject matter to really try to write about it. It’s one of the articles where you’re all going to be in your work places tomorrow saying, “That Robbie Tansel really is an ignorant bloke.” Probably not, because I’m sure you’ve got better things to talk about. How about that Buddy Franklin business? But at least if I write my article someone might email me and fill in a few of the gaps in my knowledge so I can be more informed. The Abbott government’s policies regarding turning refugee boats back to Indonesia were recently described as an affront to Indonesia and its sovereignty and causing some sort of offense. Is there any thought that it might be a bit offensive to the Australian government that Indonesia continue to allow people smugglers to make money at

Six months in a leaky boat by Robbie Tansel

the expense of the refugees who have generally suffered enough just getting to Indonesia? Is there any consideration that they continue to allow these often unsafe boats to leave their shores and then capsize in our waters (apparently sometimes deliberately) with the expectation that Australian citizens will risk their own lives to rescue these poor people. Should we be at all offended by the Indonesian government being quite happy to make the safety and future of these refugees Australia’s issue to deal with? I’m certainly not suggesting that Australia should be washing their hands of refugees and should be leaving it to everyone else to solve. I’m just saying why does it seem like primarily a problem for Australia to solve. Refugees are fleeing countries like Afghanistan, Burma, and Iraq where they face conditions which they find so difficult that they make the decision to flee to Indonesia. Presumably at this point they have taken themselves out of the very dangerous

situation they were facing in their former home. So why do they then need to put themselves on a rickety boat to Australia? I think that decision to get on a boat should be considered an insult by Indonesia. “What’s wrong with Indonesia? We’ve got nice beaches too. Half of Australia visits Bali.” If I’m reading the numbers correctly (which maybe I’m not) Australia has 23,434 refugees. We have a population of about 23 million people. Indonesia has 1006 refugees and a population of about 230 million people. But Australia isn’t doing enough for refugees? My brief research on the internet uncovered an article suggesting that Indonesia was getting impatient being used as a refugee waiting room for something like 10,000 refugees waiting to be processed by Australia last year. I know this doesn’t seem to fit with the numbers I quoted in the previous paragraph. Is it possible

that they turn a blind eye to them getting on boats to Australia so they don’t have to deal with the problem? Let me just repeat, I am definitely in favour of Australia taking as many refugees as we think we can adequately support and help. There is plenty of evidence in our own community of the fantastic contribution they can make and the difference we can hopefully make to their future. I’m just saying that I don’t think Australia should be copping bucketloads of criticism for its refugee policies. I think Indonesia should be working with us to solve this problem and get the best outcome for all involved not just blaming Australia for trying to solve some of the issues. To point out, explain and help me with my ignorance, I can be emailed at robbietansel@gmail.com

In 2012 Bonnie Stewart established the nonprofit organisation With Love & Lipstick to raise awareness about violence against women. Last year Bonnie collected more than 350 boxes of love to distribute to the many women and children who are supported by the Adelaide women’s shelters. look for breast cancer fundraiser

Former Redgum frontman and Adelaide based musician John Schumann will make a special appearance at the Mount Gambier Breast Cancer Awareness Group cocktail fundraiser later this month. Mr Schumann is best known for his lead vocal and song writing role with Australian folk band Redgum and its 1980 chart-topping hit I Was Only 19. These days, his success continues as a solo artist and motivational speaker. Organising committee member Anna Thomas said she was thrilled to have Mr Schumann attend the fundraising event alongside well-known local musical duo Jason and Christy Wallace. Whizz Bang Photo Booth will also be along for the evening, while a free cocktail and light refreshments will be provided, as well as

entertainment by Phoenix Music students and a fashion parade by Redgum Country. “Our group has held a fundraising luncheon at Commodore on the Park each year since 2000, netting more than $165,000 for breast cancer support, detection and research,” Ms Thomas said. “While the annual fundraising luncheon has been a mainstay on the local fundraising calendar for many years, we decided to make a change and have given things a freshen-up with a revised format aimed at both men and women. The enthusiasm and commitment from many local businesses keen to do their bit for local women with breast cancer has also

been outstanding.” Ms Thomas said the group was proud of the fact that every single dollar raised would be used for the direct benefit of South East women living with breast cancer. “The money we raise is used to our `Helping Hand Bags’ with locally-purchased grocery, pharmaceutical and fuel vouchers. These bags are relatively new initiative of our group, distributed anonymously to local women with breast cancer, at the discretion of health care providers working at the Mount Gambier and Millicent Hospitals,” she said. This cocktail party will kick off at Commodore on the Park, Mount Gambier from 7.30pm on October

18 providing a great night out for men and women alike. Tickets are $50 each and are available from Commodore on the Park, Joy’s Flowers, Camille’s, Plants on Sturt, Redgum Country and BP Commercial Street West in Mount Gambier, and Tony Egan’s in Millicent. The Property Connection Thinking of borrowing money to invest in property through a self managedsuper fund (SMSF)? We explore some of the ins-and-outs involved. More Australians are looking for greater control over their super. There are currently more than 490,000 self managed super funds (SMSFs) in Australia with combined assets exceeding $470 billion1. What’s more, low returns2 from many super funds and recent high levels of sharemarketvolatility, combined with the perceived stability of the property sector are resulting in more Australians considering buying an investment property through SMSFs. What property can an SMSF buy? If you have an SMSF, you can use it to buy residential or commercial property. Any property the SMSF buys must meet the fund’s sole purpose test, that is, to provide retirement benefits to its members. • Residential – The family home cannot be bought with your SMSF’s assets. However, the SMSF can buy an investment property that is rented out to tenants, who are not fund members or their relatives. • Commercial – SMSFs can also buy commercial property, including your business premises. The property still needs to meet the fund’s sole purpose of providing retirement benefits to its members. So, the return from the property through rent and growth must be the focus for making the investment. Borrowing through super This is generally only available in SMSFs, and strict regulations govern borrowing to purchase property within an SMSF, and loan conditions are different than those for regular housing loans. The maximum loan amount relative to property value will generally be lower, and a range of conditions and risks need to be considered. For example, the property must be held in a special arrangement known as a limited recourse borrowing arrangement. Under this arrangement, the property must be kept separate from the fund’s other assets. This ensures that if the fund defaults on making its loan payments, the lender has access to the property held as security for the loan, but not to other fund assets. Where an SMSF borrows to buy a property, a security trust needs to be established recognising the beneficial interest of the SMSF and the rights of the lender. The trustee of this security trust holds the property in trust with the SMSF as the beneficial owner. The pros and cons Investing in property through an SMSF has advantages and disadvantages. • Control and flexibility With greater control over your super investments, you can manage your financial future to a greater extent through an SMSF. Also, an SMSF trustee has the flexibility to choose any type of investment (including a specific investment property) that is consistent with the fund’s investment strategy and suits the needs of the fund. • Tax savings If you buy and hold property within your SMSF until you retire, it will generally be exempt from capital gains tax and income tax (for any rent received) when your super enters the pension phase. Before you retire, any rental income generated will be taxed at a maximum of 15% and capital gains tax of up to 10% will be applied if you sell the property after one year. • Diversification When your SMSF invests in property and other

asset classes, you may stand to gain from the benefits of diversification and increased financial security in the long term. • Costs You may save on investment management fees if you choose to manage your own super, but it can be costly to set up your own SMSF and meet annual compliance fees. And when you borrow to buy property within your SMSF, it generally costs more than borrowing as an individual. • Regulatory responsibilities Managing investment property in your own super fund, particularly where borrowing is involved, requires the trustee(s) to meet specific regulations. There could be serious penalties for compliance breaches. • Viability You generally need a larger deposit to buy a property in super than in your own name. It is generally not cost-effective to manage your own super or buy investment property through an SMSF, unless your SMSF has a total balance of at least $200,000.

bin reminder

The City of Mount Gambier wishes to remind all members of the community that council has recommenced the distribution of new bid lid stickers on both rubbish and recycling bins across the city. Operational services director Daryl Sexton said “n order to make sure that every rubbish and recycling bin in the city received a sticker, council was asking all residents to have their bins out by 6am on their collection day, and leave them out until 5pm. “Both the rubbish bin and recycling bin should be put out, regardless of whether they are full or not,” Mr Sexton said. “Residents are being asked to do this until the end of October.” The new bid lid stickers tell you what can and cannot go in each bin, with the colouring of stickers designed to make it easier to identify each bin and its acceptable contents. “The new bin lid sticker campaign is part of council’s efforts to reduce contamination in Mount Gambier’s bins and conserve resources,” Mr Sexton said. Currently almost 60% of the contents of the rubbish bins should be going in either the recycling bin, or the organics bin. That equates to over 3200 tonnes of material that should have been recycled or composted, being sent to landfill every year. Residents can save the community a significant amount of money by putting their waste into the correct bin. They will in turn help the environment, as organic waste in rubbish bins goes to landfill and creates leachate, which has the potential to cause groundwater pollution. Organic waste in landfill also creates greenhouse gas emissions. For further information please contact City of Mount Gambier environmental sustainability officer Aaron Izzard on (08)8721 2528 or aizzard@mountgambier. sa.gov.au.

ADVERTORIAL I GARDENARIUM The Limestone Coast and Western Victoria’s largest nursery and garden mecca, Gardenarium & The Limestone Coast Group of Companies is set to expand due to a massive increase in customer traffic over the past few years. The number one icon has, for the past 20 years, always been recognised as THE nursery of choice as it has forged ahead expanding in to many different areas. The first addition was Gardenarium Greenery Hire that was formed to hire out plants pots, arches etc for weddings, corporate functions, and has been proud to supply its amazing plants to the likes of Generations in Jazz, hundreds of weddings

Iconic Mount Gambier business set to expand

right across the region, conferences as well as small private parties and open inspections and real estate photos. The second of these, The Pot Shop, was created as a result of the huge demand for garden pots, mainly in the glazed, terracotta, sandstone and concrete fields but also encompassing water features, statues and other garden ornamentation. This part of the business soon expanded in to the import of high quality outdoor garden furniture in teak, stone, cast aluminium and wicker. Now The Pot Shop is the outdoor furntiture specialists in the region, importing furniture from right across the world,

offering the most extensive range at near wholesale pricing. Recently The Pot Shop became stockists of the Devon Lifestyle (pictured right) brand of teak high quality outdoor furniture from New Zealand, which many people have enjoyed for along time. With their huge warranty on all products you are buying an investment for the future. Following on from the succesfull retailing of roses across the region and ultimately across the whole of Australia, Limestone Coast Roses was formed, as the move from supplying roses snowballed into growing their own roses. Thousands of roses are now distributed across

the whole of Australia via their mail order business and this has increased so dramatically with the internet that this season saw them sell out of many varieties much sooner than anticipated. There is still a huge range of roses available for this spring and summer and orders are already being taken for winter 2014 roses, especially those new releases that sold out quickly. Limestone Coast Roses is the only remaining supplier of the ever popular Black Caviar (pictured below)and RSL Roses and these are being snapped up quickly with another batch ready for sale soon. Limestone Coast Advanced Trees was the final addition to the group and had gone from strength to strength to supply one of the broadest ranges of trees, shrubs, fruit trees and natives in many different sizes, giving the customer many options and price points for more mature plants. Councils, landscapers, home builders and developers now use Limestone Coast Advanced Trees with many Limestone Coast grown trees heading off to new homes in Adelaide and Melbourne as the exclusive range of unusual varieties is hard to source

anywhere else. In line with all of the Gardenarium Group’s pricing policy, the lower pricing and buying direct from the grower has allowed everyone to benefit and in many cases allowing customers to purchase much larger trees that they though possible due to the lower costs of both the product and freighting. The plant sourcing part of the business still remains for those varieties not grown by the group, however the need for this is diminishing as they expand their range of varieties and sizes available that are grown right here, appealling to landscapers who require bulk amounts of plants immediately. Gardenarium has never lost sight of being a traditional nursery or ‘proper’ nursery, with the fundamental values of knowledgable and only horticulturally trained staff, with vast wealths of experience in terms of growing and selling the products they produce, meaning the customer is assured of the right information at all times. With a landscape architect on staff too, this allows clients a one on one service at their own property or customers can bring information to the nursery to gain valuable

help. With a recent buying trip under their belt, many ranges of garden giftware, pots, fountains, statues and ornaments from across the world are arriving as well a container loads of new outdoor furrniture are landing daily. Many of the giftware lines are sourced from underdeveloped countries, with unique wares using such items as driftwood from the Phillipines, old metal oil drums from Africa and reclaimed teak from old boats, wharves and bridges throughout the world and the good news is the proceeds from the sales go back to hard hit areas of the world. With 25

to 60 percent off giftware at present to make way for the new stock and all sorts of furniture discounts (see advert adjacent page) now is the time to get your garden looking good for spring and that ever looming Christmas functions. Laybys are most welcome. So, keep an eye out in all of the media over the next few months and come for a drive and watch the transormation happening across the entire nursery. Minimal disruption is hoping to be maintained throughout this expansion, but please bear with us. Calum Haygarth

where he has been working as a Senior Medical Officer since September 2012. set to headline wine show dinner Almost 400 entries have been received for October’s 2013 Limestone Coast Wine Show, with 73 different exhibitors now striving for a trophy or medal from the prestigious event. The results will be revealed at a Trophy Feast at the Naracoorte Town Hall on October 31, hosted by the Wrattonbully Wine Region. Tickets are selling fast for the dinner, which will also feature a special presentation from 2012 Arthur Hoffman Trophy winner Ben Harris (pictured), who was the viticulturist behind last year’s Best Wine of Show, the 2010 Wolf Blass Gold Label Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon. During July, Ben travelled to Tuscany, Portugal, Bordeaux, the Rhone Valley and Burgundy as part of his prize, attending a viticultural conference and examining viticultural and management practices at individual sites. “I wanted to look at regions with an international reputation for producing very high quality cabernet

sauvignon, chardonnay and shiraz; their use of different root stocks, clones and canopy management techniques, and whether they could be suitable for our own sites and climate,” he said. Ben will share some of his discoveries over dinner, which will be matched with previous Wine Show trophy winners in a festive finale to three intense days of judging at the Coonawarra Hall from October 28-30. A new Best Dry Red ‘Other’ Trophy has attracted strong interest from producers of single varieties

like merlot, sangiovese and tempranillo, but the three-year old cabernet class is again proving to be the most popular of the competition, with 42 submissions. Limestone Coast Wine show committee member Bruce Gregory said it’s not surprising given the strong performance of 2010 Limestone Coast cabernets in other wine shows. “The Limestone Coast has been celebrating quite a few trophies for that vintage wine on the national show circuit, whether that be shiraz or cabernet or a blend of the two, so we should really expect to see some very strong wines during our own Wine Show,” he said. choir & cricket combine When you think country cricket club fundraiser, your immediate thoughts don’t shift to fine wine and canapés, accompanied by 50 stirring voices of Australia’s largest Male Welsh Choir - and you most certainly wouldn’t place them in a Woolshed in Dunkeld. Well, the Grampians Cricket Club did, and what a spectacular they have in store. Tired of the same old wood chop and BBQ fundraisers, the tiny club are shaking things up in the 450 person SouthWest farming and tourist town, and are planning an evening to remember. Friday. October 18 will see a once in a lifetime event, where guests will be treated to champagne and canapés in the magnificent setting of Dunkeld’s historic farming property ‘Devon Park’, and then seated in the Woolshed for the choral delights one of Australian’s most highly regarded Welsh Choirs. Whilst male, female and junior cricket players will trade their bat and ball for aprons, corkscrews and platters, fortunately the baton will be left in the capable hands of choir experts, whose performance history includes the London Olympic Games. The choir will perform a spectacular mix of old and new, from stirring hymns to modern classics of the opera, stage and film genres, appealing to a wide range of musical tastes. Being the premier event of the popular Discover Dunkeld Spring festival, the night will be a celebration of music, arts and culture in a magical and historic setting. “Cricket clubs and choirs don’t usually mix, but inviting the choir to Dunkeld seemed like a good way to raise money for our club and promote the region in conjunction with the Discover Dunkeld ethos of arts and culture,” club president Adrian Kelly said. Discover Dunkeld is annual festival that celebrates the food, wine, art, history and nature of the region, attracting more than 3000 people last year and tipped to grow again in 2013. Bookings are essential. More information is available at www.discoverdunkeld.com

Australia’s leading stage actress, Helpmann Award winner Amanda Muggleton, reprises her role as genteel housewife and mother Deborah, who has an addiction. ‘I’m a bookaholic,’ she confesses. ‘I just can’t help myself.’ The spice of Deborah’s life is her book club. For the women who take part, it’s a meeting of minds – and their very different lifestyles. For Deborah, the club is a chance to gather the juicy gossip of her friends’ lives and relationships. But when a famous author joins the group for a study session, Deborah’s own life suddenly switches from an old wives’ tale to the stuff of erotic fiction. Protect your eyes Most are aware of the harm UV radiation can do to the skin, but many may not realise that exposure to UV radiation can be harmful to the eyes and affect vision. There are three types of UV radiation - UVC is absorbed by the ozone layer and does not present any threat; UV-A and UV-B radiation can have adverse long and short term effects on the eyes and vision. Extended exposure to the sun’s UV rays has been linked to eye damage, including cataracts, macular degeneration, pingueculae and pterygia and photokeratitis that can cause temporary vision loss. New research suggests the sun’s highenergy visible (HEV) radiation - also called “blue light” - may increase your long-term risk of macular degeneration. People with low blood plasma levels of vitamin C and other antioxidants especially appear at risk of retinal damage from HEV radiation. Since it is not clear how much exposure to solar radiation will cause damage, optometrists recommend wearing quality sunglasses that

offer UV protection and wearing a hat or cap with a wide brim whenever you spend time outdoors. To provide adequate protection for your eyes, sunglasses should: • block out 99 to 100 percent of both UV-A and UV-B radiation; • screen out 75 to 90 percent of visible light; • be perfectly matched in colour and free of distortion and imperfection Safety First The lenses in sunglasses should be made from polycarbonate material if you participate in potentially eye-hazardous work or sports. These lenses provide the most impact resistance. If you spend a lot of time outdoors in bright sunlight, wrap around frames can provide additional protection from the harmful solar radiation.

Even Kids Need Eye Protection The risk of damage to our eyes and skin from solar UV radiation is cumulative, meaning the danger continues to grow as we spend time in the sun throughout our lifetime. With this in mind, it’s especially important for kids to protect their eyes from the sun. In fact, some experts say that because children tend to spend significantly more time outdoors than most adults, up to half of a person’s lifetime exposure to UV radiation can occur by age 18. Be sure to see your optometrist at least every two years for a comprehensive eye examination. It is a good way to monitor your eye health, maintain good vision and keep track of your solar radiation protection needs as well as new advances in eye protection.

Process the combined biscuit in a food processor until the mixture resembles fine breadcrumbs. Add butter and process until well combined. Place in the prepared pan and use a straightsided glass to spread and press the biscuit mixture over the base and side. Place in the fridge for 30 minutes to chill. Meanwhile, process the frozen raspberries in a food processor until smooth. Strain through a fine sieve into a jug, using the back of a spoon to press as much pulp through as possible.

Place the chocolate in a heatproof bowl over a saucepan half-filled with simmering water. Stir with a metal spoon until melted and smooth. Preheat oven to 160°C. Process the cream cheese and sugar in a food processor until smooth. Add the eggs, 1 at a time, processing well between each addition. Add the mascarpone and sour cream and process until combined. Add the melted chocolate and process until just combined. Pour evenly among two medium bowls. Add the raspberry pulp to 1 portion and stir to combine. Add the pink food colouring and stir to combine. Pour half the cream cheese mixture into the prepared base. Pour half the raspberry mixture over the top. Continue layering with the remaining cream cheese mixture and raspberry mixture. Use a skewer to gently swirl to create a marbled pattern. Place on an oven tray. Bake for 1 hour or until just set. Turn off oven and leave, with door ajar, for 2 hours to cool. Transfer to fridge to cool. Transfer the cheesecake to a serving plate. Top with mixed berries and dust with icing sugar.

A registration day for athletes aged from Under 6 to Under 17 will be held at the Centre shed at the ‘ATHLETICS FACILITY’ at Mount Gambier High School, Brownes Rd this Sunday from 10am-12 noon. Centre president, Jonathon Lillecrapp said registrations wouldalso be accepted on the opening night of the season, which kicks off on Friday, October 18, at 4.45pm. “We also invite any new athletes and families to ‘come’n’try’ prior to signing up, so that they can get

a feel for Little Athletics before committing to a full registration,” he said The Mount Gambier District Little Athletics Centre prides itself on its professionalism, giving athletes an authentic competition experience complete with electronic timing gates for track events and state of the art equipment and facilities. 9 and overs who meet State qualifying standards throughout the season will also be eligible to compete at the State Individual Championships at Adelaide’s SANTOS Stadium in March. “But the main aim for athletes is to improve over the season and to achieve personal bests along the way, with the Centre’s motto being Family, Fun & Fitness – Be Your Best,” Jonathon said. An Officials/Coaching Day will be held at Mount Gambier High School on Sunday, October 20, for any parents, relatives or carers interested in learning the rules, while the kids will also be able to gain some valuable coaching tips. Mount Gambier District Little Athletics Centre also caters for Tiny Tots aged 4-5 years old, placing a strong emphasis on coordination and balance skills, however these sessions will only be available if the Centre can secure a Tiny Tot Coordinator for the 2013/14 season. “We are an organisation run by families of the athletes, which promotes enjoyment and involvement, and

we depend on these volunteers to ensure that our meets are a huge success,” Jonathon said. The Mount Gambier District Little Athletics Centre recently secured a $50,000 grant from the State Government’s Community Recreation and Sport Facilities Program to renovate and upgrade the surface of the high jump and long jump tracks. With the strong support of the City of Mount Gambier and Mount Gambier High School, $100,000 has been secured to complete this project prior to the beginning of Term 1, next year. “We’re thrilled to be able to offer such a top class facility and program, not only to our own members, but those from other clubs and schools who utilise it,” Jonathon said. The Mount Gambier Touch Association is gearing up for a bumper summer season. The ever popular mixed competition will start on October 30 with 14 teams already nominating for a chance at some summer silverware. Vansittart Park will come alive on Wednesday nights as teams across three grades compete for their chance at glory. Adding a new dimension to the competition is the myPod Cup - an all Men’s competition which will see the MGTA’s elite take on teams from Portland across three minor rounds and culminating in a Saturday night finals series extravaganza. To complement the men’s action, two women’s showcase games are also scheduled to highlight the incredible depth of talent that exists in the local association. Also on the calendar is the Border Challenge which will this year be held in Portland. A now annual fixture, this is a chance for our men’s, women’s and mixed reprsentative teams to retain the trophy the MGTA won in the event’s inaugural year last summer and keep bragging rights over their Victorian counterparts. In another coup for the region’s players, the MGTA has been formally invited to compete in the Western Victorian Affiliates Cup. This comes on the back of a very strong showing as an invitational squad during the Portland round earlier this year. The association’s best players will have the opportunity to show their wares against teams including Portland, Ballarat, Geelong and Macedon. This season will kick start with a team delegates and referees meeting on Wednesday, October 23, at 6pm at North Gambier Football Clubrooms. All intending new and existing teams are required to have a team delegate and nominated referees present. All enquiries to mountgambiertouch@ gmail.com

junior basketball tournaments tip off The 2013/14 Junior Basketball Tournament season tipped off at the weekend in Murray Bridge. The Murray Bridge Basketball Association is in the ideal situation to run a top level junior carnival. The location is central to metropolitan and country associations alike and as a result the competitions are of a consistently high standard. Ten junior Lakers teams represented Mount Gambier at the River City event - eight Division 1 teams, along with second teams in Under 16 Boys and Under 14 Girls competitions. Under 18 men Coach Simon Berkefeld has a strong line-up led by State players Sam Stafford and Stephen Sochacki, while the Under 18 women, under Coach Dan Stratford, has a markedly new look this year. The Under 16 Girls’ Division 1 competition is also expected to be impressive throughout the tournament season. Yorke Valley and Murray Bridge are likely to set the bench mark in this grade. State player Lachlan Hunter leads the Lakers’ Under 16 Boys’ Division 1 team, which goes deep in talent. Coach Ray deWit has a balanced and versatile squad. Mount Gambier junior development officer Trevor Semmens and former SA Country Under 18 captain, Matt Parslow are the coaches of the Lakers’ Under 14 teams. Malinda Markiewicz returns as coach of the Lakers’ Under 12 Boys for this season while experienced and successful coach of junior teams, Peter Cunningham is in charge of the Under 12 Girls.

Mount Gambier driver Peter Gazzard is racing the clock to be able to defend the Trident Tyre Centre Legend of the Lakes Hill Climb title next month but with even his rivals offering assistance, the local hope is optimistic he can take his place in the eighth running of the popular event. Since its inception, Gazzard has shared the honours with top hill climb protaganist Kevin Mackrell and with Gazzard establishing a 4-3 lead last year, the Mount Gambier driver is again keen to go head to head with his long time rival. Gazzard damaged his car in a high speed crash at Adelaide’s TARGA rally and has staff at C&G Auto Body working around the clock to try and resurrect the batterd and bruised vehicle. “Everyone else basically said it couldn’t be fixed but our panel repair shop guys are getting the job done,” Gazzard said.
