winners of sports scholarship

The 2013 Trisha Flett - Sally-Jane Allen Scholarship has been shared by two incredible all round athletes Rachael Hines and James Dukalskis. Rachael’s sister Brooke, was awarded the same scholarship in a three way tie in 2011. Applicants representing basketball, netball, athletics, football, karate and hockey made up the 2013 field of nominees. Sally-Jane Allen and Trisha Flett were both talented athletes across a number of sports and the scholarship established in their memory is awarded to similarly multi-talented young athletes. Sally-Jane and Trisha tragically lost their lives in a car accident in January 1990 when they were returning from representing SA Country in the Australian Junior Country Basketball Cup in Albury. The sports scholarship that bears their name has been awarded ever since.

Rachael and James have both made their mark on the regional, State and national stage across a number of disciplines. Just this year alone, Rachael has represented SA Country at under 16 level at the Australian Junior Basketball Championships, with the team winning a bronze medal, as well as captaining the under 16 Australian Country Cup team which competed in Auckland and won gold and also winning gold in the Australian Club Basketball Classics with the Adelaide Hills based basketball club Eastern Mavericks. She was a member of the silver medal winning Mount Gambier Lakers team at the Victorian Country Championships and won silver with the mavericks at the under 16 SA State Championships, with gold also coming her way when the Mount Gambier Lakers under 16 team

team to the Year 8/9 State Country Championship title and while he couldn’t get his under 15 South Gambier team over the line for the Western Border premiership, he was named best on ground. And when he’s not playing football, James is setting records and winning medals in athletics, especially the high jump. He also represented the region in basketball, swimming and cricket. The scholarship has been convened on behalf of both sets of parents by sports media commentator Colin Beaton and his efforts in promoting the scholarship and compiling the applications has

Rachael is also a supremely talented netball, making her A grade debut for East Gambier in 2013 and earning a regular spot in the senior side, while she was also a member of the club’s 17 & under premiership team that did not drop a game this season on their way to the title. stalwart retires

It was the end of an era on the Limestone Coast with Veteran ABC South East Grandstand presenter Colin Beaton hanging up the headphones last Saturday. Colin (pictured) retired from broadcasting on AFL Grand Final day, exactly 29 years since he first hit the airwaves. Colin said the best part of his job has been talking to people and following the sporting careers of “kids as they’ve come through the ranks” including marathon runner Jess Trengove from Naracoorte. “Jess Trengove was a State cross-country runner in primary school, and then she was off to the Olympics,” Colin said. A former football umpire, his time at the ABC has seen him cover every conceivable sport, even turning his

passion into a family affair with wife Jeanette collating the region’s results as part of the Saturday night team for 28 years. ABC managing director Mark Scott held fond memories of Colin and believed he encapsulated the essence of local radio. “I met Colin early on in my time at the ABC – and have referenced him frequently in public meetings and speeches since then,” Mr Scott said. “The local school principal, so committed to the ABC and its audiences that he delivered the weekend sport reports for nearly 30 years was a wonderful story. “Colin has loved his sport and telling the Australian story through sport to the people in his community. “My personal thanks to him for his tireless commitment and professionalism in delivering for audiences over such a long period of time. “It has been tremendous service to the public broadcaster.” Mount Gambier teacher and soccer enthusiast Scott Dickson will take over as ABC SE’s Saturday Sport presenter from October 5. Tune in to ABC South East Grandstand Saturday Sport’s program from 9am – 10am every weekend on 1476 in Mount Gambier and 1161 in Naracoorte.

LOCAL Counting The 2013 Mount Gambier Spring Show is just one month away, and an exciting program of things to see and do is now being finalised by the A&H Society. In true country show tradition, the pavilions are set to be just as popular as the show bags and amusements, as enthusiastic locals put

down to the Mount Gambier show

their talents to the test across a broad range of categories. Entries have now closed for cookery, craft, cake decorating, photography, tech studies and junior floral design, while nominations are still open for the vegetable and horticulture sections. “You don’t need to be an expert in your chosen

field in order to enter something in the show; it’s all about getting involved in a wonderful community event,” said A&H Society president Peter Woodruff. “For some families, exhibiting is a wonderful tradition that’s been passed down the generations, but newcomers are also strongly encouraged to have a go.” Entries in the various animal and agricultural classes will close over the coming fortnight, and organisers are pleased to announce that the dairy section will return in 2013 after a brief one-year hiatus. “The seasonal conditions have made it a bit tough for a lot of the shows, and the numbers were down a bit at this month’s Royal Adelaide Show, but we’re optimistic that we will get 130 beef cattle entries and 45-50 dairy cattle for Mount Gambier,” said the Mount Gambier A&H

Society’s chair of the cattle committee Grantley Muller. The led steers is expected to be a hotly contested class, with 13 steers entered by six different schools. “We’ve got students travelling to Mount Gambier from as far away as Kingston, Casterton and Lucindale, so we’re expecting some terrific competition,” said Mr Muller. The poultry pavilion has received a new lick of paint, with local Work for the Dole participants helping the Mount Gambier Poultry and Pigeon Club to paint hundreds of cages. “We’re expecting more than 300 entries from across the Limestone Coast as well as places like Portland and Cavendish,” said A&H Society poultry committee chairman Trevor Kuhl. The poultry pis one of the show’s most enduring agricultural attractions, and Mount Gambier’s Ken Scott is among the long-time exhibitors - the 77 year old’s passion for showing poultry began at the tender age of five, when he entered a Partridge Wyandotte Bantam at the show. “One bloke came up to me last year and said ‘are you still around?’” he said. lLeft - Ken Scott.

COLLECTED STUPIDITY

I received an email on the weekend. I get emails from this bloke extremely regularly actually. Here goes. “Dear Robbie, What’s the deal with AFL umpires? They have no feeling for the game at all. They have to have an impact on the action. They can’t just let the players play. I can’t cope with it anymore. Thank goodness it’s time for cricket season. Duncan, from Dunkeld” Well Duncan. I actually sympathise with you on this one. The footy has become pretty difficult to watch. I probably don’t blame it all on the umpires though. They get handed down the expectation of how they must officiate the game and then they endeavour to do so. You, like me, are probably finding it difficult to watch football at the moment because the physical element of the game has essentially been removed. The good old fashioned bump is as good as outlawed now but the umpires didn’t make

Dear Robbie 14 by Robbie Tansel

that decision. In fact the reason the physicality has been removed from the game is mostly as a result of former players suing the league and blaming them for brain difficulties they are suffering from following their careers. My first question as a league would have to be, “weren’t most of these guys working with damaged brains before they started?” Truth be told for most of these blokes copping a good knock to the head probably does them some good; knock some sense into them. I’m convinced that smacking them around the head would provide several thousand dollars worth of mental health improvement. To be clear I think you have to blame the players. And that’s the silly thing. Who’s grizzling that they can’t bump anymore? The players. So their predecessors are the ones who have caused the problem and they’re the ones who grizzle and want to blame the umpires. Anyway I’ve got a solution all worked out for you, Dunc. Here’s what we do. The NAB Cup preseason

competition is where the AFL trial new rules each year. How about next year we change all the rules back to the original rules they played by in 1897. In addition, why don’t they trial playing with no umpires? The players are convinced that it’s all the umpires fault. Let’s see how they enjoy the game with no umpires. Think about how much more exciting the game would be for spectators. Let’s be honest. We all miss the good old days of matches full of biffo. With no umpires the players would be free to throw hands whenever they felt the need. As a spectator I don’t find anything much more annoying than niggly taggers or guys who try to get inside opponents heads talking rubbish all match. This sort of player would disappear from the game with no umpires. They’d be in hospital eating through a straw. What about the Joel Selwood’s of the world? Joel Selwood is a

fake tough guy. He knows that no one can really hurt him in the modern game. He can run into any pack, do his little duck the head and shrug the shoulders to get a pathetic free kick knowing that the umpires will protect him. Back in the day he would have ducked his head a couple of times, lost a few teeth and decided that a career as an accountant wouldn’t be so bad. Anyway, there’s my vision for the future of the AFL. Email me at robbietansel@gmail.com and let me know what you think.

Every cloud has a silver lining and for Libby and John Eykelenburg, that silver lining has been the establishment of a monthly market at Tarpeena. A brainchild of the Tarpeena Progress Association, the monthly market will be set up in the timber town’s Memorial Hall and thanks to Libby and John will soon boast a model railway as one of its major attractions. The couple formerly showcased a large model railway in Mount Gambier’s Molonys Markets but water damage had them back at square one. The progress association approached

the Eykelenburgs, killing two birds with one stone - offering the hard working couple a space in which to re-establish its model railway and also using their expertise, through their experience at Molonys, to help the association set up its own market day. “I’ve loved the challenge,” Libby said. “Not just of rebuilding the model railway but in helping establish something in Tarpeena which could come to so very important to the community.” The Eykelenburgs supported Ronald McDonald House when the model railway

was set up in Mount Gambier and intend to continue to support the children’s charity in this new venture. “So many families from this region stay at Ronald McDonald House and so we will donate $2 from every stall fee to the worthwhile charity,” she said. Libby and John have already topped the $11,000 mark with their own fundraising over the years but are just as excited about the prospect of setting

up a vibrant market in the small community as they are the fundraising possibilities. There will be an operational canteen, the hall is right next to the town playground and there will be a wide range of stalls, which Libby and John are hoping to build on as the market gains traction. The inaugural Tarpeena Market will be held on October 6 and is being supported by SE Batteries.

Ingredients: • 330g Nice biscuits • 120g unsalted butter, melted • 500g cream cheese, softened • 2/3 cup (150g) caster sugar • 4 eggs, plus 2 extra egg yolks • 1/2 cup (125ml) lemon juice • Finely grated rind of 1 lemon Meringue topping: • 2 eggwhites • 1/2 cup (110g) caster sugar • 1 cup dessicated coconut Method Notes: 1. Preheat the oven to 160°C. Grease a 8cmdeep 20cm loose-bottomed tart pan. 2. Place biscuits in a food processor and process until fine crumbs, then mix with butter and 1 tablespoon of water. Press mixture into base and sides of prepared pan, then place on a baking sheet and refrigerate while you make the filling. 3.Place the cream cheese in a food processor, process until smooth, then gradually add the sugar. Add the eggs and egg yolks one at a time, until just combined. Add lemon juice and rind and process to combine. Pour over biscuit base in the pan and bake for 30 minutes (the cheesecake should still have a slight wobble). Remove from the oven and set aside to cool slightly for 15 minutes. 4. To make the topping, place eggwhites in a clean bowl and beat until soft peaks form. Gradually add caster sugar and beat till thick and glossy. Finally fold in the coconut. 5. Carefully spread meringue over the cooled cheesecake to just cover the filling. Return to the oven and bake for a further 10 minutes or until light golden in colour and firm to the touch.

CABERNET IS BACK...CABERNET IS KING Honouring the past Five generations on since John Rymill’s great-great grandfather, John Riddoch, founded Coonawarra in 1890 and nearly 40 years since the Rymill Coonawarra vineyards were established, the Rymill team has now created a cabernet sauvignon that they are proud to call their premium wine - Rymill Coonawarra The Surveyor 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon. The wine was officially launched in The Antarctic Room at the Melbourne Aquarium on September 12 by Rymill Coonawarra managing director John Rymill. “Encouraged by the exceptional quality of a few outstanding barriques from the 2010 vintage, and inspired by our family’s recent trip to Antarctica, The Surveyor 2010 Cabernet

Sauvignon was born,” he said. “The Surveyor pays homage to John Riddoch’s grandson and my grandfather, John Riddoch Rymill, who led the British Graham Land Expedition to Antarctica in 1934-37, where he discovered and surveyed the Antarctic Peninsula. “This has been described by many experts

as an expedition that revolutionised Antarctic exploration and changed the map of the world, and is a feat of which we are incredibly proud. “When deciding on a name, we went directly to the man himself…who said ‘...explorers varied so much in their competence. However, those who had

not only discovered new territory, but also returned with a map for the benefit of future travellers, they are the ones entitled to call themselves surveyors.’(John Riddoch Rymill, 1905-1968). “It is with great pleasure that we present The Surveyor, on the eve of our 40th anniversary - a salute to our past, that has excited us about the future.” Chief winemaker Sandrine Gimon added some technical details about the wine saying 2010 was a glorious vintage for Coonawarra, which allowed them to pick cabernet at the optimal time. “Having an image of the final potential wine in your head when you are tasting the grapes is one thing; making that vision a reality is something else,” she said. “We picked the grapes from our established vines, averaging 35 years in age, that surround our Coonawarra winery, and the wine matured in new and one year old French oak barriques for 18 months. “We then selected the finest five barrels to create just 1400 bottles. “What resulted is a wine that is round, intense and generous, everything you want to see in a great cabernet sauvignon and it will only develop further with age. “I hope people will enjoy this fine example of Coonawarra cabernet.” The Surveyor will be released for general sale on December 1 this year but a pre-order facility is now available at www.rymill.com.au Above (top) - The Rymill family toast The Surveyor with a portrait of John Riddoch Rymill - Fiona Riordan, Lisa Gruetzner, John Rymill, Peter Rymill and Samantha Hickson. Back in the late 1990s Coonawarra was still building its reputation as a premier wine region and the newly formed Coonawarra Vignerons Association (CVA) knew it needed a standout event to promote itself and its premium product. Doug Balnaves was the president and Joy Bowen, the secretary, at the time. “Other wine regions had benchmark events and we didn’t,” Joy said. “We wanted to do something that celebrated what was now our benchmark – cabernet sauvignon.” The region initially was considered a shiraz region so announcing the new direction, which has become, of course, the now synonymous varietal with the Coonawarra, was critical. The plan was relatively simple for that first Cabernet Weekend - a black tie dinner, a master class, a cabaret event and a barrel auction. A large marquee was set up over the Coonawarra tennis courts and around 350 people could enjoy the festivities. Jon English and Peter Couples headlined the Friday night cabaret and the weekend was off and running. “We didn’t

anticipate the number of beer drinkers we would have at a cabernet event so that was the first plan we had to slightly amend,” Doug said. Then came the black tie dinner, which already had committee members nervous, and in the end, rightly so. “At that time in our history we didn’t have the excellent caterers we now have in the Limestone Coast and the caterer came from a long way away,” Doug said. “He assured us it would be a dream to cater the event and he could do it in his sleep.” And it appears he may have been asleep with the meals mixed up and far from hot but a clever and entertaining performance from satirist Bryan Dawe saved the day. Sunday morning saw brunch and then the barrel auction, with the five barrels on offer entering the marquee to the strains of Jim Childs and his bagpipes. “The financial success of the weekend rested on the sale of the five barrels of wine,” Doug said. Joy had done the sums and each barrel had to sell for $8000 to cover costs. “We had absolutely no idea whether we would receive a bid, we were all extremely

nervous,” Doug said. In the end, the first barrel sold for $18,000, the second for $21,000 and the lowest bid was $16,000. “That was a huge relief,” he said. “We had a wind up dinner on the Sunday night and the mood was akin to having just won a grand final.” Another former CVA president Bruce Redman remembers the evolution from marquee location to cellar door, where the individual wineries had their own events as part of the weekend program, which always had the barrel auction as the centrepiece. Bruce said the

barrel auction was certainly the key to attracting the visitors, particularly in the early days. “The weekend has certainly changed from a more broad Coonawarra focus, to winery focussed events,” he said. Even in its early days, it was a showpiece event with the spotlight entirely on the wine. “The weekend objective was to have a more serious focus on the wine,” he said. “There were a lot of wine tasting events, from the rudiments of wine tasting to master classes.” Last year’s Cabernet Symposium attracted 170-plus people and Redman believes that kind of industry focussed event will now become a more regular fixture again, with the symposium back on the agenda for next year of 2015. “You have to keep evolving otherwise people lose interest,” he said. “We need to be continually changing and adding events and coming up with new ways to keep people interested.” Wayne Stehbens, who is another former CVA chief, agrees the event started out as a way to raise the profile of the emerging wine region. ‘The idea of the barrel auction was to them bring that focus to cabernet sauvignon,” he said. And he agrees while there will always be plenty of events on the program that appeal to the general public, it is about the serious wine lover. “Coonawarra is so far from anywhere, compared with many other wine regions, that we know if they’ve made the effort to get here, they obviously have a deep seated love of wine and the region,” he said.

Speaking of bargains, the free entertainment and recreation available in the West Wimmera once spring is sprung is endless. From the stunning wildflowers to the wide range of water sports now that the lakes are full, there is plenty of family fun on offer, including fishing, water sports or just sitting lakeside and enjoying a picnic. There is also plenty on the

arts scene with the Dax on Tracks Exhibition at Edenhope from October 7-11, as well as the inaugural West Wimmera Community Arts Exhibition from December 13-15. The Dax on Tracks Exhibition features selected works from the Cunningham Dax Collection, which includes more than 15,000 works created by people with an experience of mental illness and trauma. The artworks in this exhibition demonstrate how various forms of depression can emerge in many different life circumstances, and highlights the unique nature of every individual’s experience of depression and that this experience can change from one day to another. While you’re in the West Wimmera also take the time to visit Harrow’s quality transport museum and the Edenhope Visitor Information Centre, which has updated its pioneering memorial, celebrating the settlement of the Edenhope area, highlighting the Chinese heritage of the trek of the Chinese of the Chinese gold seekers from Robe to the goldfields and the fact that the 1868 international touring cricket team practised on the foreshore of Lake Wallace.

Kate Sturgess has recently joined the winemaking team at Balnaves of Coonawarra to further hone her skills under the watchful eye of respected winemaker Pete Bissell. Originally from Brisbane, Kate completed a combined Winemaking and Viticulture degree at the University of Adelaide in 2011. While studying at university Kate gained experience with Wirra Wirra winery in McLaren Vale. To further hone her winemaking skills and knowledge, Kate completed a vintage in the Northern Hemisphere in the Okanagan Valley, Canada with Culimna. Kate has most recently held a position at Mount Langhi Ghiran in the Grampians region. “The opportunity to work with

Pete Bissell in Coonawarra was just too good to refuse,” Kate said. Kate believes she will be able to learn a tremendous amount from highly respected Balnaves winemaker Pete Bissell. She is also excited to further develop her passion for cool climate wines, working with Coonawarra cabernet, shiraz and other varietals. In other Balnaves news, for the 12th consecutive year, Balnaves of Coonawarra has been awarded a prestigious 5 Star rating by the James Halliday Australian Wine Companion. This highly acclaimed award is bestowed only upon wineries regularly producing wines of exemplary quality, with at least two wines being rated above 94 points by

James Halliday. This award is particularly significant as Balnaves holds the mantle for the longest amount of time at this high rating by any Coonawarra winery. Since 2003, Balnaves has held this enviable 5 Star rating. “It is fantastic to be acknowledged alongside the best of the best in Australian wine and to have our track record of excellence recognised,” Balnaves proprietor Doug Balnavbes said. “We look forward to retaining this accolade in the years to come.” Above - Kate Sturgess and Pete Bissell. September 21 – November 17 Thomas Clark – The Wannon Falls and Beyond HAMILTON ART GALLERY, HAMILTON The Wannon Falls and Beyond is the first comprehensive exhibition showcasing one of Australia’s great colonial artists, Thomas Clark. His body of work reveals a natural talent for skilfully depicting the early pastoral landscape of the picturesque Western District of Victoria. This will be the first major survey of the artist’s accomplished, yet mysterious, career and brings together his most significant works from some of the major collections and private holdings in the country.

Training and hard work pays off for local apprentice Fourth year apprentice Jordan Lueth is someone any employer would love to have working for them. A metal fabricator at Haynes Engineering, the 20 year old recently took out the top spot in his category at the World Skills Australia 2013 Regional Competitions. Competing against nine others from all over the South East, Jordan was given a picture with dimensions which he had 30 mnutes to draw to scale with the correct cutting measurements. He then had seven hours to put his skills to the test, following the plans he had drawn himself to complete the project and make a threedimensional version. Humble about his achievements, Jordan said he believed he did well because it is something he enjoys doing. “It’s hands on and I get a fair bit of satisfaction out of it,” he said. “There is a good variety of work. I just enjoy it.” Next year, Jordan will head to Perth to compete in the next stage of competitions

- the World Skills Australia National Competitions. Haynes Engineering’s Chris Haynes said he was extremely proud of Jordan. “The world is his oyster now. This is a really really big thing for him,” Mr Haynes said, “It’s the peak of our trade - it’s all we’ve got in this industry.”Describing Jordan as a “brilliant” worker who has a lot of initiative, Mr Haynes said it was great to have been part of his training and development and to see him apply everything he has learnt. “He’s had good teachers in Damian Farrer - the right-hand man here,

a tradesman for 26 years - and I guess myself,” he said. “It makes us proud that we taught him and that we’re doing something right. From day dot he has been great.” Jordan applied for the competition through TAFE SA and Business SA and was announced the winner at a presentation evening held in Mount Gambier. SPORTS SE Winners

revealed

For the past 12 months, 10 rounds worth of winners across five categories were selected in the newly resurrected Sports SE Sports Star Awards and the overall winners, as well as an inductee into the Hall of Fame were announced at a gala presentation where Roger Rasheed was the headline act. And has there had been all year, there were a wide variety of sports and skill sets honoured when the overall winners were announced. Athlete with a disability Jamie McInerney, who has her sights firmly set on the 2014 World Championships and 2016 Rio Olympic Games, having been in the London Olympic Shadow Squad, won the athlete of the year with James Dukalskis taking out the secondary athlete category and Jhett Perry, the primary school award. James was recognised for his prowess across a wide range of sports, with his recent selection in the under 15 All Australian AFL team to tour South Africa next year tipping the scales in his favour, while Jhett is a rising star on the golf scene. The coach of the year went to karate icon Phil Bates, while the club of the year was the Keith Table Tennis Club, which has reinvigorated the town’s club and even drummed enough junior players to have SAPSASA representation. The Alex Roberts 100 Mile Classic was the event of the year for its ability to attract international standard riders, while still having plenty of local hopes in the handicap event. The inclusion of the Kermesse in recent years and the addition of junior races in 2013 also impressed the judges. The volunteer of the year was long standing motorsport enthusiast Laurie Fox, who not only promotes the sport through his contributions in the local media but is also hands on at the club and has been since the establishment of McNamara Park. The late, great tennis coach Hack Wilkins was also honoured with an award which was accepted by his wife and two sons. Hosted by perennial MC Barney McCusker, the awards were also given an insight into the Roger Rasheed Foundation, which looks to support disadvantaged kids and communities to establish sporting programs through providing facilities, equipment or manpower and expertise. Laurie Fox was the first inductee into the Sports SE Hall of Fame with the perpetual trophy to be housed at the winning council’s offices. Held at Mount Gambier’s Main Corner, the 2013 overall winners that met the Sports SA award criteria were then nominated to represent the region at the State awards. The Limestone Coast has won the past three Country Athlete of the Year with Henry Crauford, James Dukalskis and Heather Richards.
