MOUNT GAMBIER

HELEN STREET, MOUNT GAMBIER

COVER Building Rod and Meg Dohse took on GJ Gardner Homes Naracoorte three years ago and then two years ago, they brought the Mount Gambier operation under their umbrella. Now they’re expanding again, opening an office in Robe, to even better service the needs of its Limestone Coast clients right across the region. Linda Sagasser will be the new home consultant at the seaside office. GJ Gardner has been building homes in Robe for some time but feel it is time to have an actual shopfront presence

people’s dream homes right across the Limestone Coast

to better service the Robe, Beachport and Kingston catchment. In fact, Rod and Meg will be one of the first “official” clients of the new Robe office, having bought a block in the seaside haven and looking to build a display home so people can see the workmanship and design that is synonymous with a GJ Gardner home. They are hopeful it will be ready within six months. The Robe office is also going to work smarter, opening its doors on weekends and peak holiday periods to be available for enquiries

when people are most likely to be out and about in Robe. All three GJ Gardner offices are backed by the 15 years experience Rod has amassed in the building industry, complete with that all important local knowledge - creating your dream home at an affordable price is what they are all about. The Mount Gambier office covers Penola, Millicent and Port MacDonnell; the Naracoorte office covers Bordertown and Keith and Robe covers fellow seaside regions of Beachport and Kingston,

meaning GJ Gardner has the Limestone Coast well and truly covered. Rod and Meg have also added Limestone Coast Holiday Rentals to their portfolio as a further commitment to the seaside region, making looking after your holiday property stress-free. Advertorial I THE BELLUM HOTEL

Family friendly pub fundraising for Leukaemia Foundation

In the past three years, the Bellum Hotel has managed to raise more than $40,000 for the Leukaemia Foundation, and in the month of October it’s going to try to keep that total rising. The Leukaemia Foundation’s new $9 million South Australian accommodation and support centre will be purpose-built and designed to meet the specific needs of leukaemia patients from regional areas such as the South East. The Bellum aims to raise money in October, with $1 from every kids meal being donated to the Leukaemia Foundation. The hotel prides itself on being a ‘family’ hotel, and it strives to provide activities and

attractions to that make the ‘little’ customers feel welcome and entertained. All of our children menu items are designed into individual characters, which are extremely popular with children and parents alike, as vegetables are used, encouraging healthy eating. Menu items such as Charlotte’s Web (soft drink spider), Mr Fish Face (Fish and Chips), Max and Millie cupcakes, Mr Sausage Man, Daffy Duck (ice cream sundae) are just some of the children menu items offered. The hotel also offers a ‘combo’ pricing structure, where children can get a soft drink/juice, main meal and dessert for one low price. There is an outdoor playground and activity bags

for all the kids to enjoy, plus a special Halloween night on October 31. More activities are planned for the coming months. The Bellum is also a great place for your 2013 Christmas function. The Bellum has three menus to choose from, and has live entertainment from local acts Blind Eye, Mark Moffatt and the Distractors, Mahalia Fox Trio, Ben Hood and Tamara Seeley, and Open House. The Bellum Hotel has a 10 seater courtesy bus, so even the trip home is not a hassle. If you need any help on how to fit it all together, just call Simon on 8738 5269.

The Wrattonbully wine region in South Australia’s Limestone Coast left an incredibly strong impression at the 2013 Australian Boutique Wine Awards announced earlier this month in Sydney, with two family-owned companies collecting major trophies. As reported last week, Patrick Wines’ 2012 Patrick Estate Riesling was named the Top Riesling, while the trophy for the best Cabernet Sauvignon went to Malone Wines’ 2009 Malone Wrattonbully Cabernet Sauvignon. Wrattonbully Wine Region Association president James Freckleton, said the double trophy win is true testament to the versatility of the cool climate region, which is earning a strong reputation as a consistent performer. “To be able to produce both trophywinning reds and whites is simply fantastic, and it is exciting that small family-owned producers are being recognised on a national stage, “ he said. “These awards are certainly competitive; more than 80 per cent of the domestic wine industry is eligible to enter, so these stand-out results against the very best in the industry are a wonderful achievement.” Master of Wine Toni Paterson, who has clocked

up 10 years as panel chair, praised the 2009 Malone Wrattonbully Cabernet Sauvignon’s alluring, inherent varietal characters enhanced by expert handling in the winery. “A little age has knitted together the elements

to create a wine of great harmony and interest,” she said. Malone Wines’ Will Malone says his family is thrilled with the result. “We have enjoyed success with our Malone Shiraz in recent years, but it is exciting to see our cabernet

acknowledged on the national stage- we aim to consistently produce top quality wines showcasing the distinct varietal flavours of the region,” Will Malone said. Meanwhile, Patrick Wines’ Patrick Estate Riesling has now won five trophies in the past four years, with judges at the 2013 Boutique Wine Awards declaring it fresh and vibrant on the palate with lemon and lime juice, along with rose petal and citrus aromas. “The panel became excited and went for a unanimous gold from the start and agreed that this is a lovely young riesling,” said panel chair Gary Baldwin. It is not the first time the 2012 vintage in particular has caught the judges’ eye; just weeks after being bottled, the 2012 Patrick Estate Riesling won its first gold medal and topof-class honours at the 2012 Limestone Coast Wine Show. “While that first gold confirmed that it was a terrific wine, this latest Boutique Wine Award, which put us up against producers from right across Australia and New Zealand, has really cemented that belief – we are thrilled,” said winemaker Luke Tocaciu. LOCAL Honouring

the region’s best The quality and diversity of the Mount Gambier business community was again on show last Friday night when the Mount Gambier Chamber of Commerce handed out its National Australia Bank 2013 Outstanding Business Awards. Three long standing iconic businesses were inducted into the Chamber of Commerce Hall of Fame, with the Matthews Hotels, Stuckey Electrical and FT Shelton & Sons all acknowledged, not just for longevity of service but for the high standing they have as business operations in the economic landscape and their commitment to the community. Introduced two years ago, the Employee of the Year again proved to be a strong category with the long list of nominees yielding three high commendations as well as an overall winner. Hawkins Medical Clinic Diane Chambers took out the Job Prospects sponsored award, with the high commendations going the way of Noel Barr Toyota’s Courtney Noble; People’s Choice Credit Union’s Clare Whitehead and Gwen Buckingham, from

She’s Apples. The big gong of the night – the National Australia Bank Outstanding Retail Business Award was another tough category with the UFS Chemist earning a high commendation and She’s Apples taking out the major award. The long standing produce business’ links with local restaurants, its loyalty program, its commitment to fresh Australian produce where possible and its outstanding customer service all earned She’s Apples the night’s top award. The National Australia Bank is the major sponsor of the Mount Gambier Chamber of Commerce Outstanding Business Awards program. The City of Mount Gambier Environment and Sustainability

Award went the way of new kids on the block, Melissa Illman and Valeri Tkatchenko of Cafe Melzar’s, who have brought a strong focus on organic produce, an active compost program and biodegradable take away containers among a raft of environmentally friendly and sustainable business practices. Tanya’s Hairworks received a

high commendation in the same category. Commodore on the Park took home the Radio 5SE/96.1 Tourism/Hospitality/ Accommodation Award in acknowledgement of its long standing strong reputation in the industry and continued development of the accommodation and restaurant facilities and impeccable customer service across all facets of the business. Another long standing family business was also in the spotlight when Tye’s Plumbing took out the Regional Development Australia Limestone Coast Manufacturing/ Building Industry Award. The 15 year old business has expanded its services and staffing levels, as well as forging the innovative

new relationship with de Bruin Construction and Friswell Electrical. Dairy enterprise Hamilton’s Run took home the Grant District Council Agribusiness Award, rewarding its best practice farming operation, quality produce and cohesive team work. Hamilton’s Run is a benchmark dairy operation that has a strong emphasis on local suppliers, as well as a strong involvement in high school students studying a Diploma of Farm Management. Green Triangle Electronics celebrated 25 years in business this year and was celebrating again on Friday night when it was adjudged the WIN TV Service Industry Award winner. GTE’s large client base, professional staff, expanded service range and commitment to supporting a raft of community projects saw it honoured with the Service Industry Award. Vanity Makeup Bar and Body Lounge took home the Lifestyle1 Small Business Award, going one better than when it was a highly commended business at the 2012 awards. The friendly, professional service and nationally recognised skill base of the staff set Vanity apart. See next week’s edition for even more business awards news and photos. dental service in Portland

People on health care cards needing dental surgery can now have their procedures performed at Portland District Health as public patients. The hospital is the first in the region to offer the service, saving eligible people substantial costs, long trips to Melbourne and an often lengthy wait for surgery. Dr Jeffrey Field, who recently started a private practice in Portland, will perform the surgical procedures at PDH. He is the only resident dentist with formal oral surgical training in the south-west region. The hospital will be used for procedures requiring general anaesthesia, such as removal of wisdom teeth. PDH Director of Nursing Frank Megens said the new service would be of great benefit for eligible people not only in the Portland region

but across the southwest. “Previously if you needed this level of dental surgical work you had to pay out of your own pocket or drive out of region,” Mr Megens said. While the new system will help many district people needing day-stay surgical procedures, it will also increase the working capacity of the hospital’s operating facilities. It will be funded as part of the hospital’s Weighted Inlier Equivalent Separation (WIES) allocation. Mr Megens said the new service would not impact on the hospital’s existing dental practice or public dental payments. Dr Field recently took over the dental practice of Dr Michael Stubbs and will continue to operate it as a general practice, including sedation services. The Canadianborn dentist has been doing locum work since

moving permanently to Australia in 2012 but has Australian links dating back to 2005 in teaching dental anaesthesia in Sydney. He was previously based in Qatar for 12 years and is a certified anesthesiologist with the National Dental Board of Anesthesia. “I’d like to thank the hospital for this opportunity which will help a whole raft of people who require surgery but otherwise might not be able to afford it,” Dr Field said. There is strong demand for the surgery service with all places booked for September and heavy bookings already made for the next two months. Dr Field is enjoying his new home base. “I like Portland and I like the practice. I didn’t want to work in a large city and to have a practice a block from the ocean is terrific,” he said.

in Australia

Terang dairy farmers and Holstein breeders Bryan and Joanne Dickson are on top of the world with their herd being ranked as the best in Australia. It is the first time a south-west Victorian breeder has topped the Australian Profit Rankings for at least a decade. The feat is even more remarkable as the Dickson’s Emu Banks stud herd of 728 is more than double the average size. The Dicksons have also bred two heifers in the top 20 rankings. The number one ranking has been revealed in the August release of Australian Breeding Values (ABVs) by the Australian Dairy Herd Improvement Scheme (ADHIS). The Australian Profit Ranking (APR) is the main breeding index available for Australian dairy sires and is based on a series of nine production and non-production traits. Mr Dickson said the selection of highly ranked APR bulls and strict culling of lesser performing cows had led to the national success. “It’s all in the genetics. Breeding with good bulls is the top of my list,” he said. ABVs express a sire’s genetic potential for a single trait such as milk protein content or milking speed. A breeding index reflects a sire’s genetic potential for a combination of several traits, making it easier for dairy farmers

to compare the suitability of different sires for their herd. The APR, the main breeding index available for Australian dairy sires, is a single index that reflects nine traits that influence net farm profitability, including production (milk, fat and protein yields) and non-production traits. Non-production traits include survival (longevity), fertility, mastitis resistance, liveweight, temperament and milking speed. The contribution of each trait towards the final APR value is ‘weighted’ according to its relative contribution to profitability. Michelle Axford from ADHIS said the Dickson’s top ranking was an even bigger feat when the herd size was considered. “Bryan and Jo’s result is special because they have such a large herd of more than 700. Most near the top are much closer to the average size of 250 cows,” she said. Ms Axford said that to achieve the number ranking proved the Dicksons are “very careful breeders”. “They use genomic technology well and are very careful in their bull choices, and how they mate and how they decide which cows should be bred and which ones culled.” The Dicksons have been moving up the rankings over the past few years and were

listed as number two for the Holstein breed in April this year. The herd has an APR of 113 and an ASI of 92, the second best in Australia. It has a protein ABV 16 kg above average, the best in Australia, 470 L milk, and 14 kg fat. Mr Dickson said the use of genomics had helped in the herd development. “More than 30 per cent are genomically tested, with more testing being undertaken each year,” he said. “A key part of our success is that we herd test and we don’t milk lower performing cows,” he said. “We cull the low performers even if they look good. It’s hard but that’s how we got to this level.” Genomic bulls dominate the top bulls in the latest list of ABVs. Ms Axford said that more than half the Holstein bulls in the latest Good Bulls Guide were young genomic bulls. “Genomic – or DNA – testing

is having a major impact on dairy artificial breeding in the two years since the technology was introduced in Australia,” she said. The Dickson farm is continuing to maintain good production with almost 9000 litres per cow and 630-640 KG/MS. Mr Dickson said he had aimed for a top 10 ranking but once he achieved that he set his sights on the top. “Once we got in the top few I started thinking about reaching number one. It’s nice to get there.” Emu Banks sells about 50-60 bulls each year to Genetics Australia and other A.I., companies, by exporting to China and to the local market. Ninety per cent of the bulls sold have been genomically tested. “Having the number one ranking is certainly a great boost for us,” Mr Dickson (pictured above) added.

Advertorial I CLAIRE JOHNSON ART & DESIGN

Turning her passion into a career When one door closes another one opens and nothing could be truer for Tantanoola artist Claire Johnson. After carving a career as a qualified interior decorator she has now turned to a home based art and design enterprise. Formerly of Inside Story, when that business closed its doors, Claire decided it was time to pursue more closely her artistic passion and decided to study graphic design. She has honed those graphic design qualifications working on projects for the South East Art Society, of which she is a committee member and newsletter editor, and is looking to expand that side of her business through the designing of business stationery, promotional material

and other products such as photo collages, that are great birthday presents. She is also available for painting commissions, bringing 15 years of experience to the table. Art was her favourite subject at school and she has studied and practised art basically since first picking up a paintbrush

as a seven year old, Tenison Woods College art teachers Ted and Jane Van Eeten certainly played their part in developing her skills and fuelling her passion. Working mainly in the realistic and contemporary genres, and using predominantly the use of acrylics and oils, Claire is still experimenting and growing in her artistic career by exhibting her first abstract work in the South East Art Society’s upcoming exhibition - Genesis. She also works on a casual basis at Mount Gambier’s Riddoch Art Gallery. You can check out Claire’s work on her website at cjohnsonartanddesign. com.au

Advertorial I SEAWINDS NURSERY

with love & lipstick In 2012 Bonnie Stewart established the nonprofit organisation With Love & Lipstick to raise awareness about violence against women. Last year Bonnie collected more than 350 boxes of love to distribute to the many women and children who are supported by the Adelaide women’s shelters. The campaign was launched this year on August 1 and will run through till November 25, which is White Ribbon Day. In Australia one in three women will experience some form of violence in their lifetime, it is time to break the silence. This year Nicole Milosevic is launching the campaign in the South East to provide boxes of love to the women and children using the Limestone Coast Domestic Violence Service in Mount Gambier. The aim is to collect 50 boxes by the end of November. Organisers are hoping people in the community will make a box of love, filled with items listed below and donate it. That work, as an Australian Disability Enterprise, through Kyeema Support Services, was honoured at last month’s Glenelg Shire Inclusive Business Awards with Seawinds being announced the Employer of the Year. “It was nice to be recognised for the hard work that we do,” manager Bernice Rosier said. “I’m not sure people in the public sector really know what we do.” Bernice, along with support staff member Tilley Govanstone, bring almost 60 years of combined full time horticulture work to the table in a business that has evolved over the past 19 years. “We started out providing revegetation services to Portland Aluminium and Landcare groups,” Bernice said. “When demand for those services diminished, we diversified and opened the business up to retail sales.” That was five years ago, with tree planting services

also a major component of the business. “We saw a need for organisations and landholders to get trees in the ground and we had a crew capable of doing that,” Bernice said. “I also have a landscaping background so we provide soft landscaping services, which is basically providing the plants and mulching.” In the past year alone, Seawinds Nursery has planted 20,000 trees. They employee eight people with disabilities for 12 hours a week and both Bernice and Tilley consider it a privilege to work within the disability sector. “They’re just brilliant and we’re doubly blessed to work with these people and help them grow and develop and give them skills, confidence and self worth and get to work with plants as well,” Bernice said. “They have the best can do attitude and just get in and get it

done, whatever the project is.” Seawinds Nursery is keen to promote its retail arm, which, combined with the local horticulture knowledge of Bernice and Tilley, means you get the best possible advice and plants for all your gardening needs. “Both Tilley and I are really into food production so we have a lot of fruit trees and vegetables, in fact, this year we have 35 varieties of tomatoes alone,” Bernice said, “We do heirloom vegetables, bio-dynamic gardens, an extensive range of forestry tubes, indigenous plants, larger native plants and herbs and perennials - basically we have everything.” Above - The Seawinds team - Tilley Govanstone, Rose-Anne John and Bernice Rosier.

Dusting off their shoes for Memory Walk

Facilities and services updated to better meet your needs

Bupa Portland residents have dusted off their walking shoes ready for the upcoming Alzheimer’s Australia Memory Walk. The residents will be joined by their carers, family and friends when they take a stroll around the Botanical Gardens on Saturday, October 19. The community is invited to join them to show their support for people living with dementia. Bupa is a partner of Alzheimer’s

Australia and is proudly supporting the Memory Walks, which are a key fundraising activity for the charity. According to the home’s general manager Jane Rainbird the walk is a great way to raise awareness of the chronic disease and at the same time gets the whole community active in the great outdoors.“As our population ages and we all enjoy longer lives, we will see more people living

with dementia,” she said. “There are almost 280,000 people with dementia in Australia, and with 1700 new cases each week, this number is projected to double by 2030. “Many residents at Bupa Portland are living with dementia, so we have developed specific environments and activities to reflect best practice in dementia care. “Our staff have also undertaken specialist dementia training, and combined with a dedicated lifestyle and activities program, we assist people living with dementia to enjoy meaningful lives.” In additional to the Memory Walks, the home also has daily outings, including visits to the shops, the Casterton Glass Works, whale watching, and picnics as part of their lifestyle program. To join the residents in the Memory Walk, register at the Bupa Portland reception. For more information, contact Kellie Davis at Bupa Portland on (03)5523 4401 or visit the Memory Walk website at www.memorywalk.com.au

Boandik Lodge is committed to providing quality care and services to the aged in the Limestone Coast region. They have recently updated their strategic plan, which is focussed on

meeting the needs of the aged in the communities throughout the region. We have all heard of the ageing population and the prediction of a significant increase in the incidence of dementia in older

people. Boandik Lodge has considered this in developing the strategic plan with a significant emphasis on the provision of care and services that meet the needs of people living with dementia, both

in our residential facilities and in the community. The planned upgrade of the Lake Terrace site will include the upgrade of the Moore Court unit to provide larger communal areas, access to more outdoor areas and a brighter environment for the residents living in this area. There will also be an additional five new beds in the high care area where we are experiencing significant demand. Over the past 18 months Boandik Lodge has experienced a significant increase in the demand for respite services, particularly emergency respite, in high care. Fortunately there has been an additional allocation of respite days at both the Lake Terrace and Crouch Street sites to allow them to meet this demand. There will also be respite beds incorporated in the Lake Terrace upgrade. There has also been a review of some services that they provide to people living with dementia in the community. The Connections Group has an excellent activity program that encourages participation and involvement in the community. There is also a support group for people caring for family members with dementia. Boandik Lodge provides a diverse range of services in residential and community settings, further information can be obtained from the Lake Terrace site.

Poll Dorsets dominate where it matters

The Poll Dorset breed, developed in Australia by Australian producers to perform in Australian conditions more than 70

years ago, continues to do just that - perform exceptionally for prime lamb producers through all states and environs in

this vast country. That is why it sits comfortably as the prime lamb industry’s number one sire breed of choice.

It reinforced this point at the recent Royal cont. page 31

Above - These six Poll Dorset rams took out all three placings in the vitally important Lamb Production Pair of Rams class at this year’s Adelaide Royal Show, dominating over all other terminal sire breeds. They are held by Andrew McLachlan and Alastair Day (Allendale - 3rd), Lyn & Alan Schinckel (Leenala – 1st) and Charles and Clayton Rowett (Ulandi Park – 2nd). Modern Poll Dorset rams like these are the industry leaders for a combination of elite performance, meat yield, functionality and profitability.

Adelaide Show where the breed dominated in the most important classes. Winning the Interbreed Supreme Ram of the Show was prestigious in itself, but it was the commercially relevant Lamb Production Pair of Rams Class that saw Poll Dorsets achieve the most important result of all. In this interbreed competition each pair were assessed objectively for structure, breed type, growth, fat, muscle, skins and market suitability. Poll Dorsets were not only awarded the first prize, but also took out the second and third placings as well. It doesn’t get any more dominate than that, with entries from the Leenala,

Ulandi Park and Allendale studs taking out the awards from all other terminal sire breeds. The Poll Dorset has achieved the mantle of the lamb industry’s number one sire breed of choice though results like these that convert to outstanding performance in the fields of commercial producers Australia wide and continues to set new benchmarks. Elite and consistent performance, combined with superior lean meat yield are factors that processors and retailers seek and Poll Dorsets through their entrenched superior muscling fulfil that need better than other breeds. The growth rate of Poll Dorset sired lambs is exceptionally

good, especially early, an important factor in allowing producers to market lambs for quick turnoff, very important in drier areas, or poorer seasons in better rainfall areas. The entrenched purity of the breed ensures more consistency in the product they produce. Commercial producers can have great faith in the expected performance levels from Poll Dorset rams. The Poll Dorset breed is always evolving and improving as markets dictate and from a management viewpoint the modern Poll Dorset is a very easy care with a functional body shape and has much cleaner points than when originally created

in the 1950s. For prime lamb producers all these advantages culminate into the one most important factor in lamb production; greater profitability. That profitability is a direct result of the Poll Dorset sired lamb being demanded by more sectors of the industry, but most importantly the consumer. Put simply, Poll Dorsets tick more boxes more often. They’re number one for all the right reasons. The breed has ‘feature breed’ status at this year’s Royal Melbourne but can be readily inspected at any of the numerous shows, field days and sales around the country. For more information, view the association’s website.

Saints cause huge upset

There weren’t too many surprises in grand final results this weekend but there was one and it was a huge one. Saints upset unbackable favourites Vicis in the Mount Gambier Netball Association A grade grand final. Vicis had not dropped a game all season and had not really been challenged but that all changed on Saturday as defenders Megan Ridding and Kristen Capewell really locked down on Angela Beer and Dana Mulraney, while Tabatha Sanderson proved unstoppable in goals and best on court Rhiannon Primmer dominated the mid court. Primmer saw off two opponents as Saints got off to a good start to lead by six at the first change. The lead blew out to as high as 10 during the clash, with Vicis getting back within three in the final quarter before four quick goals from Saints ended the challenge and securd the premiership. Justin McConnell - Mick Ryan Medallist (A Grade best on ground) It was a big day for North Gambier on Saturday with all three of its football teams that made it through to the season deciders, storming home to take the flag. The Tigers have spent the weekend celebrating the under 17, Reserves and A

Brad Colliver - Reserves best on ground grade premierships, cementing the Vansittart Park club as clearly the strongest club in the Western Border Football League. East Gambier took the other flag in the under 15 grade, getting the better of South Gambier in the closest result of the day - eight points.

North Gambier’s Reserves secured back to back flags.

Matthew Allen - Under 17 best on ground But the rest of the day belonged to the Tigers, starting with the under 17 boys winning a close contest with West Gambier to eventually win by 14 points. The Reserves then got off to a flier with a five goal to one behind opening quarter that cemented the final result. The rain came at quarter time, making conditions tough and while South added 5.5 to 4.11 to break even for the rest of the contest, the start proved costly. It was the Tigers engine room that set up the victory with Matt Hensel, Liam Downs-Woolley and Garth Willoughby winning plenty of ball courtesy of Sam Whelan, while up forward it was Jake Schutz doing the damage with three goals. South kicked the first goal of the final quarter but Jamie

North Gambier’s A grade secured back to back flags. Yeates headed back to play loose behind the ball and any thought of a comeback was snuffed out. Brad Colliver, who played on a forward flank, was adjudged best on ground. West Gambier certainly had every intention of denying North Gambier three from three and started exactly as the Roos would have wanted to. The cream rose to the top early for West as Tom Holmes, Brad Wilson and Doug Lloyd not only won plenty of the football but, perhaps more importantly, denied the class Tigers onballers any time or space. “They were really strong and their pressure

was great,” North coach Justin McConnell said. “They shut down our playmakers in that first half.” The North coaching panel then put the acid on its senior players and the midfield group to lift and it was like the switch was flicked when the Tigers came out after half time. David Nulty, who was playing his 350th game and had his colours lowered by young Roos ruckman Daron McElroy in the first half, started to get his hands on the ball and Richie O’Grady, Brock Egan, Adam Kurzman and Pat Perry suddenly not only won the ball but won

it in space. “Our skill execution was much better in the second half and we were able to create turnovers with our pressure,” McConnell said. “Our back six were fantastic and they gave us great rebound and set up some wonderful passages of play - I think the third quarter is the best quarter of football we’ve played this year.” It ended up a 10 goal to one quarter that shut the door on any hope of a fairytale ending to the Roos season. “To West’s credit, they really fought it out, when it would have been easy to throw in the towel,” McConnell said. The playing coach spent the whole game at full forward after straining his calf in the first quarter. But he still finished with seven goals in what was adjudged a best on ground performance, making McConnell the first player to win the Mick Ryan Medal. “It was quite humbling to win it - Mick is a champion of the league and his record is second to none in this region,” McConnell said. “That being said, we had a lot of players that could have won it.” O’Grady would have been one of those in strong contention, while Egan, Troy Hosking and Kurzman would all have been worthy recipients. “In the end it was the bigger bodies and wise heads that helped us get on top,” assistant coach Kevin Bryan said. “You could just sense when we got the first goal that they’d flicked the switch and the enthusiasm was infectious and we just got on a roll.”

West Gambier to give multipremiership player and unsung Saints hero Elise Reilly the perfect farewell present. Reilly has been integral in the Saints resurgence as a power since 2000, first as the talented junior and more recently as the hard working pinch hitter, who has played everywhere in the mid court and the defensive circle during the premiership years and, who again, after a slow opening quarter, showed why she has made wing defence her own. Reilly is moving to Western Australia and will be a huge loss for the premiers. She leaves as her club has now joined North Gambier on 11 A grade titles and also emulated the feats of the Tigers, whose best winning run was five titles from 1988-1992. There were plenty of errors early in the match but it was the Roos who settled first, reeling off six of the first seven goals and then stringing together six of the next 10 to enjoy a 12-5 advantage when Millicent called an injury time. The break in play, with four and a half minutes to play, did two things – refocussed the scrappy Saints and broke the momentum of the rampaging Roos and Millicent reeled off the next three goals to start to eat away at the West advantage. The Saints also scored three of the last four goals of the quarter to only trail by three at the first change. The defensive pressure of Amy Cram was a feature of the opening quarter and with her sister and team captain Lisa wreaking havoc at the other end, the Roos looked set for the fight. Millicent wasted no time reacting to the lacklustre opening quarter, bringing Melinda Squires into

Brenna McKay- 15 & under best on court

South Gambier’s 13 & under team won the club’s first ever junior netball premiership

the game at goal shooter and Alex Walker to goal defence. Both moves paid immediate dividends as Walker started to shut down Lisa Cram and Squires opened up the space in the circle for Denton with some smart running and great delivery. Everything that had gone right for West and wrong for Millicent in the opening quarter seemed to reverse in the second and it was the Saints playing the free flowing, hard running netball and the Roos that could find no space. As Hayley Dunn and Walker started to shut down the space in the Roos shooting circle and get their hands on a number of ill considered feeds, Lisa Duldig was driving hard and Pip Ellis was finding the edge of the circle with ease. Denton and Squires were combining beautifully to see the Saints score 12 of the first 15 goals of the quarter and never looking like giving up the lead again. Amy Cram swapped with Racheal Wilson halfway through the second quarter but nothing could stop the Saints’ run and the 16-7 quarter proved the game breaker as Millicent established a six goal lead. A purple patch from Reilly halfway through the third, where she created a couple of key turnovers, saw Millicent string four unanswered goals together and by three quarter time the margin was 12. It was a similar pattern to the second quarter as Duldig and Ellis easily found the circle’s edge and Squires and Denton were able to isolate the West defenders and get the better of the one on one duels. Dunn and Walker also continued to be instrumental in choking the West forward line and was it not for the workrate of both Lisa Cram and Brittany McEvoy, who ran hard all day in what was a good duel with Duldig, the scoreline could have been worse. Millicent swung more changes at the final change, moving Reilly to the attacking wing and bringing Tanaya Redman back into the contest on the defensive wing. The Roos weren’t done with

though and with Amy Cram creating some turnovers, Lisa Cram starting to find more space and Emily Stafford backing herself on the long range shots and converting, West was able to the deficit back to single digits. But the Saints rallied and never really let the Roos back in. Denton was again outstanding, playing the role of the general to perfection as she took every second pass and set up every attacking move. Dunn was also pivotal as her competitive spirit kicked in after quarter time and she denied West any easy possession. Squires was impressive in her first A grade

grand final, as was Walker, with both girls genuinely grabbing the opportunity availed them at quarter time and making the most of it by impacting on the contest for the remaining three quarters, Lisa Cram was again easily the pick of the Roos with McEvoy certainly breaking even with Duldig and Amy Cram still creating her share of turnovers. West Gambier’s A reserve team

had better luck, snaring its fifth successive premiership, while Casterton won the B grade and East Gambier took home the C grade, 17 & under and 15 & under flags. The South Gambier 13 and under team made history for the Demons, securing the club’s first ever junior premiership.

Enduro wraps up new national series

It might have been the 36th running of the Teagle Excavations ARB Pines Enduro was anything but run of the mill – in fact, it was the start of a new era with the Millicent event the fourth and final round of the newly installed ARB Australian Off Road Racing Series. Danny Brown and George Apted will go down in history as the inaugural winner with the result going right down to the wire, winning by just one point from two teams – Andrew McClelland and Murray Mott and Dan Bonnor and Shawn Teagle. As for the Pines Enduro title, that went to Carl Haby and Brenton Gallasch (inset) with daylight second as the duo put 10 minutes between them and the rest of the field. OG Roberts adds KIA to its stable of cars OG Roberts has one of the most famous catchcries in local business - OGR...your driving future. And that driving future now includes KIA, with OGR adding it to their stable of vehicles at their Jubilee Highway West showroom. OGR principal Bryce Roberts said it was all about planning for the future. “Our long term vision is to supply vehicles to the market from emerging manufacturers and global powers,” Mr Roberts said. “KIA is a very innovative company that has models made not only in Korea but Europe as well.” OGR is also attracted to the diversity of the KIA range from

small, inexpensive cars right through to luxury models with a suite of state-of-theart features. And with SUVs the biggest selling segment in the Australian motor industry at the moment, the popularity of the KIA Sportage and Sorento

could not be ignored. “They also have a fantastic people mover in the Carnival that is so affordable compared with many of its competitors,” Mr Roberts said. OGR can sell you any of the KIA lines as of today, with the showroom vehicles

set to be in stock by October 1 and the whole overhaul and KIA franchise fully operational as of November 1. That includes the service department. “The technicians have been in Adelaide for intensive training on the products and the

diagnostic equipment,” Mr Roberts said. “This is about more than just investment in the KIA brand - it’s investment in additional staff, additional workshop space, more equipment, it’s about more jobs and opportunities in the Limestone Coast.”

KIA has won multiple Australian Car of the Year honours and boasts a maximum 5 star ANCAP safety rating on the entire range of Rio, Optima, Soul, Sportage and Sorento models, along with a suite of state-ofthe-art safety features. KIA also offers eco-
