local member in unfamiliar territory

Tony Pasin is used to being in charge but the new Federal Member for Barker elect finds himself in unchartered waters. Last Friday he headed to Canberra for his first party room meeting since the Federal election and he was nervous and bracing himself for another unfamiliar role - sitting, listening and learning. “This is an experience I haven’t felt for a long time probably since I left for university and arrived at the boarding college for the first time,” he said. “You are set to meet a group of people you don’t know but will be working with and it’s a strange feeling.”

“I’ve always found the quickest way to learn is to work with good people and that’s what I intend to do.” TONY PASIN Those who have seen Tony Pasin addressing a Mount Gambier City Council meeting or arguing a case in court would find it hard to

reconcile the relieved and nervous man that has emerged since his pre-selection as the Liberal candidate for Barker. “Everyone else was confident but I was anything but,” Mr Pasin said. “Even on election night, others were saying we had won and the news was positive from the scrutineers but I wasn’t prepared to call it until about 8.30pm.” In a rare, candid admission, the Member for Barker elect admitted to many a sleepless night heading into the September 7 poll. But while the usually robust, confident Mr Pasin will be keeping his mouth shut for now, choosing to observe and learn, he is determined to develop into a strong local member and rise through party ranks, sooner rather than later. His local college expects no less either. Mr Pasin already has an extensive to-do list. “I really want to work towards achieving an MRI licence for Mount Gambier,” he said. “I want to be a strong voice for agriculture in this government and seeing what we can

do to take the load off small business because that’s what drives the economy.” Mr Pasin also believes his well-rounded background will help him be a strong local member. “I was raised on the family farm and worked side by side with my dad there, I watched mum run her successful retail business and I am a lawyer,” he said. “I feel that has helped me relate to all industries and people

“I want to be a strong voice for agriculture in this government” TONY PASIN from all walks of life.” Overwhelmed and relieved were the primary emotions Mr Pasin felt when the election result fell his way but he is now well and truly in work mode, despite the fact the official result is not expected to be released until early next month. “You believe in yourself but whether others outside believe in you is always the unknown,” he said. “It’s a really personal experience

so when people tell you not to take things personally, in reality that’s impossible.” Aside from Friday’s orientation, party room meeting and general Canberra orientation, Mr Pasin is focussing on setting up his Mount Gambier and Murray Bridge offices and finding the right staff to work alongside the new member as he looks to embark on his political journey and representing the people of Barker in the halls of power in the

national capital. While Mr Pasin expects to establish some strong mentoring relationships within the party room, he has already been seeking the guidance of two of the Liberals most respected and long serving politicians, who have now embarked on life outside of politics - Nick Minchin and Neil Andrew. He has also already built strong ties with Member for Wannon Dan Tehan, with the two keen to reinvigorate the

Greater Green Triangle region. “I share a lot more in common with Dan (Tehan) and our electorates than I do the other major rural electorate in South Australia, being Gray,” Mr Pasin said. “I’ve always found the quickest way to learn is to work with good people and that’s what I intend to do.” While his schedule will not improve drastically from the 20 hour days he was working during his 18 months of campaigning, he was

looking forward to last Saturday. “Fiona (wife), Bella (daughter) and I are spending the full day together - the first time that has happened since this all started and I’m really looking forward to it,” he said. COVER Look

years younger and stay that way At Medical Cosmetic Centre they like to call this positive aging. More and more people are discovering that antiwrinkle injections help them look and feel fresher. If you are thinking that you look more tired than you feel, or if your frown lines make you look worried or cross, then anti-wrinkle injections may be for you. “I can still remember the first time I heard of anti-wrinkle injections as a cosmetic treatment - that was 1989, 24 years ago,’’ said patient coordinator Cathryn Kerry “We all discussed it at work the next day and decided it couldn’t possibly take off; people wouldn’t ever accept that kind of treatment around their eyes. How wrong we were?” These days, anti-wrinkle injections

are an everyday treatment at Medical Cosmetic Centre. It is a treatment that many people have all grown to love. Nothing beats it for targeted treatment of lines and wrinkles. Anti-wrinkle injections will make the most difference for those who are time poor, because it is safe, simple and quick. “At Medical Cosmetic Centre, our clients enjoy regularly indulging themselves with anti-wrinkle treatments,” Ms Kerry said. You can read about antiwrinkle injections frequently in the women’s magazines, so if we are so comfortable with these injections, what stops other women from having them as well? Cathryn Kerry answers some of Your questions Is one of these stopping you

from looking great for your age? Top four reasons why women don’t have anti-wrinkle injections: 1. I don’t want people to think I’m vain and I’m worried what others will think. This has to be the number one reason, even amongst those people who do have anti-wrinkle injections. Most of our clients don’t discuss it with friends and partners. Time will change this. More and more women and men are seeing anti-wrinkle injections for what they are – a simple cost-effective solution to grumpy lines. Eventually, it will become commonplace – we will accept it in the same league as colouring our hair or wearing make-up – it’s a

personal choice. 2. Is this the beginning of the end – where do we draw the line with cosmetic procedures? This reason also has ties to the fear of vanity. We are so conditioned that vanity is a bad thing, yet we know that we are also judged by how we look. How often do we hear comments like “hasn’t she let herself go”? On the hand, we wish that we didn’t “judge a book by its cover” – but we know that it happens and that we do it ourselves. At the Medical Cosmetic Centre, we always tell people to address the things that bother them and leave the rest. In the end, cosmetic treatments have to be about making you feel better and more confident. 3. My husband/partner

Above - A before and after shot of crow’s feet treated with anti-wrinkle injections. The images have not been altered in any way. Results may vary.

doesn’t want me to have it. I’m surprised that in this day and age of enlightened and liberated women how often this objection comes up. Perhaps it is more about keeping the peace, but I’m not sure how well our partners would react to our objections to their fishing or footy trips. 4. I’m scared of needles. We have plenty of clients who are scared of needles, but it doesn’t stop them from having anti-wrinkle injections because they absolutely love the difference. It’s amazing how looking in the mirror and seeing the results helps to dampen down those fears. So despite the needles, the naysayers, and the judgmental spouses, for the last 24 years, anti-wrinkle injections have become more popular with each passing year. There’s no doubt that you know at least one person who has them – they just haven’t told you yet. And if that hasn’t put your concerns to rest, here’s just one more reason to book in ... Call Cathryn Kerry at the Medical Cosmetic Centre on (08)8367 0111 and book your FREE consultation with Dr George Kerry on Friday, October 11, at 15B Sturt Street Mount Gambier. And don’t forget to ask about our dermal fillers to enhance lips and smooth creases, folds and wrinkles.

hall turns 150

SEPTEMBER 16 1620 - The Mayflower starts her voyage to North America. 1975 - Australian Idol runner-up in series one, now music success story Shannon Noll was born.

An exhibition commencing at Portland Arts Centre next week will commemorate the 150th anniversary of Portland’s historic Town Hall. On September 21, 1863, the foundation stone for the new Portland Town Hall was laid by William Learmonth, Chairman of the Municipality

of Portland. The day was a great occasion and council declared it a public holiday. A procession from Market Square to Cliff Street was led by the town band and followed by the Volunteer Rifle Corps, various orders of Masons, the Town Councillors, clergy, school children and local citizens. Around

1000 people joined the festivities. Built at a cost of £617 3d, the new town hall officially opened on Queen Victoria’s birthday, May 24, 1864, but to much less fanfare, with only about 50 people attending the official opening. Glenelg Shire Mayor Cr Karen Stephens said that highlights of the exhibition are the original 186263 drawings from a Council-initiated competition to design the new town hall, by two of the three entrants - engineer John Barrows, and the winner of the competition, surveyor and architect Alexander

Ross. “This is possibly the first public showing of these drawings since the building’s inception,” Cr Stephens said. “The exhibition also includes some fascinating photographs showing the changing face of the town hall over time; the trowel used to lay the foundation stone; and portraits of Portland’s past mayors dating from the earliest days of local government in the 1850s to the mid 20th century.” Portland Town Hall housed the administration for the Borough, and later, Town of Portland until 1970. Now known as History House, the former town hall is home to the Portland Family History Group and a social history display from Council’s Cultural Collection. The exhibition will be officially opened by Glenelg Shire Mayor Cr Karen Stephens at Portland Arts Centre at 5.30pm this Tuesday. Everyone is welcome to attend. The exhibition continues until October 11.

You might have noticed a couple of months ago that I wrote an article about my infant son Shaquille. In it I said the crazy little man was a terrorist. Now that’s what we call a metaphor, children. It’s when you say that something (Shaquille in this case) is something else (a terrorist) because they have similar characteristics. Now obviously Shaquille is not a terrorist and that’s not a very fair comparison. Terrorists have some redeeming features, after all. At least they perform acts of terror for a reason or a cause that they’re fighting for. It’s not just random violence like a toddler. Anyway, I thought I’d share some of the other metaphors I considered to describe little Shaq. For a while I was leaning towards I have a new alarm clock that doesn’t work very well. Every night I set it to wake me at half past six but it goes off at half past ten, one and four. The idea with a metaphor is that it’s meant to compare

Metaphors for beginners by Robbie Tansel

something to something that it isn’t really and I’m starting to wonder if Shaquille might actually be some state of the art Japanese robot alarm clock. Seriously he is like clockwork. A tornado was another obvious metaphor choice. A tornado strikes from out of nowhere, destroying anything that happens to be in its path. The big problem with this metaphor is that a toddler isn’t really random enough to be compared to a tornado. A tornado could destroy absolutely anything. A toddler only wrecks things which are valuable or important. I can guarantee that if I leave a half read newspaper laying around, I will only need to leave it for a minute or so and it will be on the floor with pages spread from one end of the house to the other. Toast is the other thing I’ve had to become much more careful with. Murphy’s law dictates that it will always fall honey, peanut butter, jam or butter side down when he gets to it. That’s not exactly true mind you. One time recently my toast fell honey up. I spent all

day thinking about that one. How was it possible that it wouldn’t fall and leave the ground all sticky? I stared and stared at the toast. Was this a miracle? Was it a sign from God? And then it came to me. I’d put the honey on the wrong side of the bread. If he’s not physically pulling things apart then he’s vomiting on it. I don’t get that, by the way. I thought that humans vomited when they were sick. Shaquille does it as some sort of a 15 minute announcement after completing meals. Again he makes a point of especially doing it shortly after I’ve put on whatever it is that I’m going to wear for the day. After I rejected the tornado metaphor I thought about a white pointer shark. I’m sure he smells opportunities to cause trouble the same way a great white smells blood in the water. He waits for that opportunity and then pours his drink all over the laptop. Animal metaphors in general seemed pretty appropriate. He’s a viper with the quickness of his destructive strikes. He’s a squirrel scaling any structure he can get his leg up on. He’s

a dog looking for the next opportunity to play. Of all the animal metaphors, monkey was my favourite. Picture the chaos of a monkey loose in your house. Running, climbing, flinging poop… that’s not a metaphor mind you. That’s just me changing a stinky nappy. Don’t ask. Well, sorry I had to get all educational on you. I hope we all have a better understanding of metaphors now. I am Yoda to all of you my loyal Padawans. That’s another metaphor if you didn’t realise. You can literally, not metaphorically email me at robbietansel@gmail.com

Mount Gambier’s Tough Fit “Tough Tribe” completed a uniquely hard slog for charity recently, netting more than $7000 for Make-A-Wish Mount Gambier. A crowd of about 200 gathered at the Glenburnie Saleyards to watch the team challenge, which put team members Scott Thomas, Laura Thomas, Wendy Gray, Stephen Gray, Scott O’Dea, Nikki O’Dea, Jay Lane and Anna Thomas up against a 22.5 tonne Fennell Forestry B-Double. Portland and Casterton on Wednesday to speak about her book Looking For Lionel. Sharon Snir is an author, counsellor, and

inspirational speaker, and Looking For Lionel is a blend of memoir, personal observation, and practical advice for friends and family of someone with dementia. The author talk event will coincide with Dementia Week which runs all this week. Glenelg Shire Mayor, Cr Karen Stephens said the author talk would be a fascinating event for book lovers as well as an important insight into the challenges faced by people living with dementia. “Looking For Lionel has been described as an ‘easy to read’ novel, that offers fresh ideas to help families and friends communicate,

understand and cope with a loved one with dementia,” Cr Stephens said. “It gives a unique and uplifting account of the power of relationships within a world of this common illness.” The author talk event will be held on Wednesday and will be held at both the Portland and Casterton libraries, with the Portland talk at 11am and the Casterton talk at 2pm. Entry is free and tea and coffee will be provided. There will be a book signing opportunity and copies of Looking For Lionel will also be available for purchase.

close to five minutes to pull the truck along the 150m course and over the finish line. The impressive sponsorship tally was raised thanks to major sponsor Fennell Forestry and gold and silver contributors the Barry Maney Group, Trident Tyre Centre, Noel Barr Toyota, Tabeel Trading and Cummins South Pacific. Many more donations from local businesses and individuals meant an even larger sum for the popular children’s charity. Fennell Forestry managing director Barry

Fennell said the event had exceeded all expectations and was hopeful it would make a real difference to at least one local child in need of some fun and happiness in their life. “Secondary to the

charitable cause this event was established for, we are keen to demonstrate that our local timber industry is strong and willing to support our local community,” he said. All team members have been steadily preparing for the event at Tough Fit Health and Fitness Training Mount Gambier during recent months, but have amped up the intensity considerably in the lead-up to the truck pull and their next team challenge, Tough Mudder. Tough Fit owner and personal trainer Scott Thomas said he was pleased to see the long and at times, unpleasant, hours in the gym had paid off. “We thought that getting the truck moving would be the hard part, but really it was keeping momentum along the slightly-incline course that was the hard part. It was a true test of endurance and mental strength and I can assure you, it wasn’t easy,” he said. The Tough Tribe then turned its full attention to Tough Mudder, which was held on Phillip Island at the weekend, where the 20,000 expected participants are put through a hardcore 20km military style obstacle course in an overall test of strength, stamina, mental grit and camaraderie.

precious memories forever

There are some moments in life you just want to remember forever and Stacey Schack is committed to capturing those moments for you in her own, unique style. Specialising in maternity and newborn photography, it was when she gave birth to her first child that her passion for photography was reignited. “I have enjoyed taking photos since I can remember,” Stacey said. “That passion for photography was triggered when I had

my first child and realised I wanted to capture every moment.” She bought her first digital SLR camera two years ago, established Stacey Schack Photography and has been building and developing her client base and her own skill set ever since. “I did a locally based mastering photography course but basically I am self taught,” Stacey said. “I want to be different, to bring something different to the table and for people to be able to look at an image and tell that it’s one of mine.” While the maternity and newborn work is her passion and area of expertise, Stacey also offers family, toddler and special occasion photography, as well as commercial work. Feeling equally comfortable working indoors or out, Stacey set up a shopfront and studio at Building 2, 43 Edgar Street in Heywood, three months ago. She has also formed a strong working relationship with Portland photographer Carmel Trickey and the duo are now providing photographic services to the Portland District Health Service. for mum’s reading pleasure.... JUST BETWEEN US

TRACES OF ABSENCE

VARIOUS AUSTRALIAN WRITERS In Just Between Us, a host of Australia’s bestloved female writers bare all on this age-old quandary: Are female friendships all-natural and nurturing? Or are some more damaging than delightful? And most of all, what happens when female relationships go off the rails? And who is to blame? While falling in and out of romantic love is a well-documented experience, losing a friend rarely gets discussed. Which doesn’t mean the pain is less – quite the opposite, as we discover in this extraordinary collection of heartfelt fiction and non-fiction works that put female friendship in the spotlight. Nikki Gemmell looks at the hardwiring that keeps us bonded in tightly knit packs, but makes us feel oh-so-claustrophic in mothers groups and at the school gate. Melina Marchetta reveals the peculiar shame of being overlooked for the high-status netball positions of Centre and Goal Attack. Liz Byrski conducts a forensic examination of her own friendship history, and finds some uncomfortable patterns. And Merridy Eastman pens a letter from Helena to Hermia from A Midsummer Night’s Dream, which shines the light on one of literature’s most famously dysfunctional female friendships.

SUSAN HOLOUBEK A missing daughter, her distraught mother. A foreign country. A history of deceit. When Dee’s daughter, Corrie, decides to spend her gap year in Argentina, it seems like the perfect solution to their strained relationship. That is, until Corrie goes missing. Facing every mother’s worst nightmare, Dee boards a plane from Australia to launch a frantic search. Four years later, Dee returns to Buenos Aires for what she concedes may be the last time. But on this visit, a fresh lead triggers a new search – one where Dee must place her trust in strangers to help her navigate the vibrant but often threatening city. Dee’s search for Corrie is overshadowed by the fear that her failings as a mother may have had something to do with Corrie’s disappearance. To what extent is Dee to blame? And is this a question that she will ever be able to answer? Traces of Absence is a stirring and thoughtful portrayal of parenthood, guilt, faith and hope. And of the redemptive power of simple human kindness. Susan Holoubek was born in Melbourne in 1963. Her family moved to Adelaide in 1976. She has worked in education, community development and healthcare. Traces of Absence is her first novel.

set to host local artistic talent Art in the Sticks presents the third collective exhibition at Cluain, near Lucindale, in the woolshed and old shearers’ quarters, amidst aged red gums. The theme this year is ‘Family’. Artists include painters, an artisan furniture maker, photographer, jeweller, and an electrician moonlighting as milliner. Hamish is a painter and farmer and the man behind the Art in the Sticks exhibition. Hamish has since taken part and exhibited in many local as well as international events and exhibitions and has some of his works on permanent display at galleries and cafes. Known for his abstract, thought provoking work, Hamish uses the strong colours of enamel paint that imply boldness and

freedom. For this exhibition he is putting together a body of work relating to quite personal experiences of daily routines, views and comforts. Subjects deal with landscapes and small family endeavours. Gray Hawk is one of Australia’s leading creators of contemporary furniture using fine Australian timbers and exotic materials. A recent commission for the Australian Government was to design and fabricate the courtrooms of the Federal Law Courts in Adelaide. His King and Queen ‘Scy’ chairs will grace the shearer’s quarters at Art in the Sticks. Gray has built a reputation on creating creates exquisite objects for lovers of art, with most of his chairs taking upwards of 60 hours to craft. Mark de Nys is

the 2013 winner of the Coonawarra Vignerons Acquisitive Sculpture prize and will be exhibiting old works and new at Art in the Sticks. Rose Ampt (aka Miss Spark Milliner) creates fascinators to both relax and re-energise. “Lately I’ve been loving silk abaca: hand-dyed fibres from banana tree leaves woven with silk for luxurious shine,” she said. “It’s quite a contrast to my full time job as a qualified electrician and it’s glorious.” Susie Clarke’s paintings employ layers of colours and subtly collaged printed matter, with environmental backgrounds and simplistic line work becoming prominent features of her work. The end result are images that provide clues to content and interpretation, which Susie

LOCAL Leadership A national leadership program has set Colac apprentice Will Bongers on the right path to long-term success. The Westvic Staffing Solutions apprentice was one of only 21 apprentices from around Australia to attend the Today’s Skills: Tomorrow’s Leaders national leadership program in Canberra last month. Will is hosted by BDH Constructions based in Colac and is employed through Westvic Staffing Solutions’ Group Training Organisation. Will has had his mind set on a career in construction since his early teens and the course has just confirmed he is heading in the right direction. “It was a great opportunity to get a clearer direction on where I want to go and it helped me realise that I really love what I’m doing and want to keep going long-term in the industry,” he said. “It’s a pity only 21 people get to go to the course – all of Australia should have this opportunity.” The conference hosted by Group Training Australia at the Australian Institute of Sport on August 18-23 and gave participants an opportunity to learn from other group apprentices and trainees and leadership experts.

The Wannon Falls and Beyond is the first comprehensive exhibition showcasing one of Australia’s great colonial artists, Thomas Clark. His body of work reveals a natural talent for skilfully depicting the early pastoral landscape of the picturesque Western District of Victoria. This will be the first major survey of the artist’s accomplished, yet mysterious, career and brings together his most significant works from some of the major collections and private holdings in the country.

It was designed to help participants to manage their careers and to take their leadership skills back into their workplaces. Will is already taking up that challenge by addressing school groups and he was guest speaker at the Westvic Staffing Solutions annual general meeting on September 5. “I’ve always wanted to be in the building industry but I learned about keeping my options open and different avenues I can pursue, such as project management and owning my own business,” he said. Will was the only building apprentice in the course but he said the interaction with other participants was fantastic. “We talked about

the need for a work-life balance and setting your priorities in life. For me that is family and relationships and making sure that can balance with my work.” “It shows that if you are doing something you love now you can still love it in 25-30 years and have an enjoyable career.” Will said the program heard from the longest serving staff member from the Australian Institute of Sport, gymnast Brennon Dowrick, who at 42 has maintained his passion for the sport that took him to the Olympics when he was 18. Will is completing the fourth year of his Certificate III in Carpentry. He was previously a student at Simpson Primary School

and Cobden Technical School where he started his interest in carpentry as an Australian School Based Apprentice (ASBA) with BDH Constructions. Field consultant at Westvic Staffing Solutions, Dale Gaylard, said Will was a great ambassador for Westvic and the course. “He displays skills and leadership beyond his years, in both a professional capacity and in his personal life,” Mr Gaylard said. Will is also using the skills learned on the job to renovate his own house. Above - BDH Constructions apprentice Will Bongers, from Colac.

MSEFL Eagles

win war of attrition

There was a sense of deja vu for Hatherleigh supporters on Saturday when the mighty Eagles captured the 2013 Mid South East Football League premiership flag. It was under the same coach, against the same opponent and at the same ground as the club’s last A grade premiership eight years ago. In almost a carbon copy of the second semi final between the same two sides a fortnight earlier, the game was an arm wrestle. The Eagles making the most of dry conditions and a slight breeze to have a five goal to two opening quarter, before the reigning premiers responded kicking six goals to one to enjoy a nine point lead at the main break. Things really tightened up in the third as neither side could win clean possession and players started to tire. The Eagles kicked 1.4 to the Demons’ three behinds and with only two points separating the two sides going into the last,

the flag was there for the taking. At the eight minute mark of that final term, Port MacDonnell slotted its first major since the second quarter and enjoyed a nine goal buffer but Hatherleigh coach Craig Skeer had given a simple but effective message at three quarter time. “We had been in the same position in the second semi final so we knew we could do it, he said. “I them nothing separated our two sides and it would come down to want - I told them to back themselves and I certainly backed out fitness if it went down to the wire. I told them not to worry about the scoreboard but to take each contest on its own merit. And it worked - the Eagles responding to the early Demons’ goal with two of its own and then with the five point buffer, locked down hard with neither side scoring in the final 10 minutes of the dour struggle. “I don’t think Port Mac got it past centre half forward so our guys did a great job,

Skeer said. The Stan Jones Memorial Medal for best on ground went to Todd Watson who after conceding four goals in each of the two minor round matches to gun Port MacDonnell forward Dylan Bromley, knuckled down in both the second semi and grand final to concede only two on each occasion. Watson also took Will MacDonald when he rested forward. “I don’t think he was beaten in a contest all day, Skeer said. He was also full of praise for fellow half back Josh Sandland who was also as creative with his run out of the backline as he was being disciplined and tight checking in his defensive efforts. And then there was Tylah Saunders, who started the match with a 22 possession opening quarter that made sure the Eagles got off to a flier. “His leadership and his want to win yesterday (Saturday) was so important, Skeer said. “He was the everywhere man. After a quiet 2013 by his standards,

Tom Agnew had an outstanding finals series, including the weekend’s season decider and Jack Sullivan was another of the hard running Eagles who, despite a slow start, was full of running when the game was on the line. The Eagles finished

SECBL Winter

season premiers decided

Cougars Basketball Club added double SECBL flags to their Trophy collection last Wednesday night when they won the Men’s and Women’s 2013 Winter Season Basketball Grand Finals. Prior to this season, Cougars, Bulldogs and Panthers have all recorded double titles in a season, Bulldogs in Winter 2011, Cougars in Winter 2012 and Panthers last season 2012/13 Summer. Cougars in making it two doubles in three years, sets a new

benchmark for opposition clubs to chase. The Women’s final between Cougars and minor premier Panthers began in a different fashion to their earlier contests; it was Cougars’ turn to get away to a dominant start just as they did against Bulldogs in the semi-final. Kylie Allen led Cougars, backed up by Kylie Venn and Georgia Green. In contrast, Panthers relied too heavily on Brianna Walters who had scored 13 of her team’s total of 30 at the main break. Meanwhile Cougars had a more

even spread of scorers and had stretched their lead to 5, 35-30 Green and Ebony Cunningham made the break 8 at three quarter time as Panthers still searched for effective team offence. Melissa Renko and Sonia Bawden continued to work hard against strong body work for scores from the field and stripe. Kelly Lockwood hit a timely three but then had her attempt to level the scores rim out in the closing seconds. Georgia Green finished with 22 points, Kylie Allen 10 and Ebony Cunningham 9 for the

premiers, while Brianna Walters also had a personal tally of 22, followed by Melissa Renko on 13 and Sonia Bawden on 8. Brianna Walters was won the City of Mount Gambier Most Valuable Player Award for the grand final. Panthers-Wizards made a bold start against Cougars in the Men’s Grand Final when they led 17-10 at quarter time. After that it was all Cougars as they went on a scoring blitz. Kane deWit assumed control of the ball and, with team-mates, outscored

Lifestyle1.net - 039

Wizards 46-17 in the second and third quarters. Young guns deWit, Sam Stafford and Braiden Ousey stepped on the gas in the final 10 minutes to record a comprehensive 84-49 point win. Matt Parslow, Peter Loring, Michael Stephens and Matthew Rhodes continued to compete but could not impact on the scoreboard. deWit, judged the City of Mount Gambier MVP of the final, scored a game high 27 points. Stafford, in his typically quiet achiever approach, finished

with 21, Ben Tremelling with 14 and Ousey on 10. Matt Parslow concluded a fine season for Panthers-Wizards with 15 points, stalwart Stephens had 10 and Loring 9. Even though the result is disappointing for Wizards, they have had a commendable season when one considers the loss of Nick Morrison and Ben Brumby. Photos page 40 & 41.
