LOCAL Funding Glenelg Shire Council has welcomed an ALP election funding pledge for the upgrade of aquatic facilities located in Portland, Heywood, Merino and Casterton. Michael Barling, Labor candidate for Wannon, visited the Portland YMCA last Wednesday to welcome funding of $394,975 under the Regional Development Australia Fund (RDAF) round five. Mayor Cr Karen Stephens said that the funding commitment would enable council to renovate the facilities to provide safe and attractive swimming pools for the community. “The current

pledge on eve of vote facilities were built in the 1960s and 1970s, and they are well loved and used, with approximately 142,000 attendances each year,” Cr Stephens said. “Recent community consultation undertaken through council’s aquatics services strategy identified that residents believe the facility is in need of refurbishment. “An upgrade of these facilities would lead to increased usage and enjoyment by the community. “As we have identified in our Draft Municipal Public Health and Wellbeing Plan, we need to encourage our

community to be more active and engaged in physical activity. “Revitalising our pools would encourage more people to swim and take part in a range of water activities, providing opportunities for social connection and improving the wellbeing of residents. “The provision of new and additional solar blankets and hot water systems will also ensure that our facilities are more environmentally sustainable and less costly for us to operate.” Glenelg Shire Council approved an application for funding of $394,975 under the

Portland District Health’s new Primary Care and Community Health director Fiona Heenan is seeking an integrated approach to tackle the region’s priority health issues. Ms Heenan will start in her new role on September 16 and is looking forward to working with and listening to the community. “There is already fantastic work happening at PDH and in the community and we will be looking to build on that,” she said. “We have priority areas that we need to address, such as our high levels of diabetes, chronic asthma, obesity, drug & alcohol and lack of physical exercise. “We will be aiming to promote healthy Portland and district communities through preventative or early detection approaches for chronic conditions such as diabetes. It is important to enhance service coordination and quality of care to ensure equal access to all services and health promotion- prevention programs.” Part of Ms Heenan’s role involves working with the Active Health Portland board and director of clinical services Doctor Margaret Garde to ensure services and health promotion activities are integrated. Ms Heenan will also continue to work closely with the Glenelg Shire Municipal Public Health & Wellbeing Plan and other partners to deliver the PDH Strategic Plan. “Over the next two years we will be aligning the primary care and community health vision by working with and listening to the community as we strive for excellence in rural health provision,” she said. For the past

four years Ms Heenan has been Primary Care director at Heywood Rural Health. She previously worked for PDH for six months in establishing a chronic disease program and also worked in project management for the Southern Grampians and Glenelg Primary Care Partnership. “I enjoyed my time at PDH and it is an exciting time to return,” she said. “I have a career plan and this role was a great opportunity to extend myself in an executive level position. “It is pleasing that the position provides

opportunities to elevate primary care at the executive level of PDH.” After studying at Deakin University in Geelong to become a nurse, Ms Heenan worked for 20 years in Melbourne mainly in diabetes and chronic disease management roles and as a clinical nurse consultant. Ms Heenan was raised on a sheep and cattle farm at Tyrendarra and now lives in Portland with her husband Dean Willey and

Advertorial I ODYSSEY VEIN CLINIC

For great legs this summer - treat now

Dr. Emma Nolan and Kerryn Harvey of Odyssey Vein Clinic have been visiting Mount Gambier monthly for more than three years and are, probably, best known for the non surgical treatment of varicose leg veins and cosmetic injectable procedures. ’We tend to find that we are busiest with the leg veins a couple of months prior to summer,” Dr Nolan said. “What people don’t realize is that varicose veins, especially, may take

some months to fade completely and the ideal time to tackle this problem is in the winter months so the legs look good for summer.” Ultrasound guided sclerotherapy (UGS) is a walk in, walk out procedure with no time off work or away from usual activities. Odyssey also offers non surgical facial rejuvenation. “We are finding that the cos-metic side of our business in the Mount is growing,” Dr Nolan explained. “Anti wrinkle injections and dermal fillers are a great way

to improve and , sometimes eliminate, facial lines ad folds - this is a quick treatment that can be performed in your lunch break.” No GP referral is required for any of the above procedures. For more information visit www:odyssey veinclinic.com.au or contact Kerryn on 0403 965 548. Above - Dr. Emma Nolan and practice manager Kerryn Harvey.

COVER The

personalised approach to your next holiday

So much of life is about timing and that’s very much the case for Leah Mullen and Carla Anderson. The duo was presented with the opportunity to take over Travel O’Connor around six months ago and it didn’t take much discussion at all for the girls to decide to take up the challenge. “We are friends as well as having had a healthy respect for each other within the industry,” Leah said. “The timing was perfect and we were both ready at the same time to do something like this,” Carla said. “In the end we made the decision pretty quickly and then just had to get the paperwork in order.” Both girls are accidental travel agents - Leah studying recreation planning and management initially and Carla completing a teaching diploma. “I was in Adelaide and I got a job

in recreation but realised it wasn’t really what I wanted,” Leah said. That’s when work in the travel industry enticed Leah and after gaining a few years of experience on one side of the counter she then decided to head off herself for her own international adventure. When she returned to Mount Gambier, her passion for travel seemed the most logical career path to follow and so with no airline experience she fronted up to O’Connor Airlines and offered to help in the wake of the collapse of Ansett and subsequently Kendell Airlines. “The demand for booking holidays at O’Connor’s was increasing and there was a need to start a travel agency which I was fortunate enough to be given the opportunity to manage,” Leah said. Carla’s journey to travel consulting

started overseas. “When I finished my Diploma of Teaching I felt like I needed a break so I applied for a UK working holiday visa and based myelf in London for three years before returning to Cairns with my newfound passion and was lucky enough to get my first job in the travel industry,” she said. Carla later moved to Melbourne, also working in travel and then came love and her move to Mount Gambier. “Carla has been almost everywhere and she can advise clients on every destination they can think of,” Leah said. “As for me I get very unsettled if I’m in the same postcode for too long, and enjoy experiencing new surroundings and cultures.” Both girls believe travel is good for the soul and gives you an appreciation not just of another culture but a greater

appreciation of your own life. To ensure a smooth transition for their clients, the girls have maintained the Travel O’Connor name but starting with the office relocation to the rear of the RSL on Ferrers Street, Mount Gambier, the girls are moving towards a business relaunch and sooner rather than later will be known as Tailor Made Travel Mount Gambier. “The name of the company goes along with our business ethos,” Carla said. “Tailor made holidays is what we want to be about, not a stock standard package deal.” Membership of Travelscene American Express, which is set to unveil some exciting changes, means the girls can provide increased buying power. The girls, who also have another Travel O’Connor graduate Ashlee Cutting on staff as their third consultant, are all about service - from the initial enquiry to your return

home. “Ashlee was always a part of the equation and we wanted her as part of our team from the outset,” Carla said. The trio are all about personalised customer service and doing everything they can to plan the perfect trip - whether it’s an overnighter for business or an extended world tour. “We want to be there for our clients from the start of the process to the end,” Leah said. “As far as we’re concerned our job isn’t finished until we place our welcome home call and check everything went as planned.” All three girls love the people contact that working in the travel industry provides, as well as the diversity of the industry. “Every day is different and there are always new challenges,” Leah said. “You never know it all and things are always changing.”

popularity doubles as breast cancer fundraiser

Max and Sue Seebohm at Gambier Coachlines presented a cheque to the Mount Gambier Breast Cancer Awareness Group for $3564.55 last Wednesday. Max first had the idea to use the PINK coach packages for a fundraiser and thought it was very fitting to link PINK the performer with the PINK for breast cancer. So it was decided, Gambier Coachlines would donate $5 from each person that travelled with them to see PINK in concert in July and August of this year. After speaking to Helen Guthridge, a loyal Gambier Coachlines customer and breast cancer survivor they also came up with the idea of passing a money tin around the coach as well, and it was this generosity

The Helping Hand Bags concept was launched at the group’s major fundraising luncheon last October, as a way of keeping locally generated funds local and providing assistance at a grassroots level to those who need it most. PIONEERS Hill

claims Allan Scott Medal

NBL recruit Brad Hill has taken out the Castec Rural Supplies Mount Gambier Pioneers 2013 MVP honour, joining an

illustrious list of Allan Scott Medal winners in its 14 year history. He is the fourth Australian player to snare the honour and is

in rarefied air with Jamie Holmes, who took the medal home in the club’s other championship season - 2003. Having

helped his side to the 2003 South Conference championship last Friday night, Hill backed up the following night to be

crowned the best of the championship line-up. American import Titus Robinson was adjudged the best defensive

player, hard working guard Tom Daly took home the Golden Hands Award and the coach’s award went the way of conscientious local talent Matthew Berkefeld. The defensive player award is a new accolade for the 2013 season and another new piece of silverware has been added to the club’s honour roll with the Kurt Russell Award for the best player in the finals - that will be presented after this weekend’s SEABL national final against Dandenong. The award was named after the dual championship guard, who announced his retirement at the awards ceremony, in honour of his 45 point MVP winning performance in the 2003

national championship decider. Two new faces also picked up club awards with Craig Ness taking home the Club Person of the Year and Nick Minchell, the third of the new awards, the Bowden Family Trophy, for the volunteer of the year. Roo takes home Brian

Right - 2013 Brian Hennessy Medal winner Brad Wilson, of West Gambier, with runner-up Brock Egan, from North Gambier. The 2013 medal count was held at McDonald Park with South’s Brett O’Neil finishing third and Wilson’s Roos team mate Daron McElroy in fourth.

West Gambier playmaker Brad Wilson has taken home the Brian Hennessy Medal as the best and fairest player in the Western Border Football League. Wilson polled 18 votes, five clear of runner-up Brock Egan, from North Gambier, with South’s Brett O’Neil a further vote back in third. Talented West Gambier ruckman Daron McElroy finished fourth on 11 votes ahead of a swag of players on nine votes, including previous winners Simon Berkefeld (South) and Richie O’Grady (North) and Casterton playing coach Dylan Ayton and Millicent skipper Jonathon Agnew. Wilson secured best on ground on three occasions - the opening game against South Gambier; the round three clash with East Gambier and in round six, again against the Demons. Egan actually secured four best on gorund accolades but still came up five vots

shy of the supremely consistent Roo. The Reserves medal went to South veteran Daniel Stratford, who took the count by the narrowest of margins from fellow evergreeen Bronte Grosser, from Millicent. The under

17 best and fairest award went to the Tigers’ Troy Hatt from East Gambier’s Jack Dawe, while in the under 15 competition it was North Gambier’s Bradley Close earning the top honour from East’s Todd Lockwood

with West’s Ryan Hosking and Sougth’s Sam Walker tied for third. More football action page 24 and full scoreboard page 31.

claim South Conference championship

There’s something about the Icehouse in Mount Gambier and buzzer beating three pointers in championship games. On Friday night, Ben Allen drained a three pointer with less than a second to play to restore the lead to the home side and in the end secure the South Conference title. A decade earlier it was also a three point attempt that remained the enduring memory – the Jason Chapman

shot that rimmed out and denied Ballarat a chance to force the 2003 South Conference Championship game into overtime. In a contest that was an arm wrestle all night, in the end it was going to take something special and that’s what Allen provided. The game stats sheet will show he was one from eight from the floor on Friday night when he took the make or break shot but history will only remember his

last shot went in – all net, no doubt. The Icehouse erupted, the players celebrated, with 2003 championship survivor Kurt Russell embracing Allen barely before the ball had passed through the ring. But there was 0.9 seconds left to play and while it was unlikely, it was possible for Nunawading to tie or steal the game. The Spectres got the ball in quickly from the half court possession but

the Hail Mary shot never looked likely and Mount Gambier had its second South Conference championship in 25 years. Nunawading enjoyed a game high nine point lead with only seconds on the clock in the first half before Lukass Blicavs cleaned up a late miss underneath and at the main break it was the home side trailing by seven points.

Below (left) - Brad Hill scord a game high 24 points and came into his own with some critical plays in the second half. Below (right) - Tom Daly called the shots in Friday night’s South Conference championship victory at the Icehouse. Photos courtesy of Gavin Male Designs.

WHAT THE PLAYERS SAID... “It hasn’t really sunk in yet that I’ve won a second championship. We’ve got that winning culture and I knew we could find a way to win. It’s a nice way to finish off the basketball career. Titus’ dunk was unreal and gave us a momentum swing.” KURT RUSSELL “Last night (Friday night) was great and proved all our hard work and effort that we’ve put in since February was worth it when we got the win. As a competitor you never count yourself out. This group is really down to earth and has gelled together very well right from the start of the season. This is just a piece of the cake, we get to cap it off on Sunday - that’s what you come for, that’s where you put your stamp on the league and be able to say we were the best overall.” TITUS ROBINSON

SEABL Pioneers

claim South Conference championship from page 27

WHAT THE COACH SAID... “Our fans have just been absolutely fantastic. The atmosphere was out of this world for me and I’ve been around the block a lot but tonight (Friday night) was just awesome. We do still have another game to go though and I was almost in next game mode as soon as Ben (Allen) knocked that shot down - our journey’s incomplete. The journey started last year and I felt we were making great progress even though it didn’t show on the scoreboard. We had a great half time (on Friday night), we just talked about things as a group as we always do and to be honest I didn’t have to do a lot. When Ben (Allen) got the ball in those last seconds I actually thought he’d make it easy. It was a really good pass from Lukass (Blicavs) and I work with these guys every day and Ben makes that shot nine out of ten times he makes it. At no stage did I think we were going to lose and with 10 seconds to go I still through we were going to win. Now we take on Dandenong on their home court so it doesn’t get any better than that. ” RICHARD HILL

The visitors got it back to nine early in the last and that’s when the Pioneers really shifted up a gear, skipper Matt Sutton igniting the crowd when he stripped the Spectres of the ball and then found himself on end of the ensuing offence, draining a huge three with seven to play, finishing his good defensive work in the best way possible. It took until 4:23 to play in the third for the Pioneers to tie up the ball game with two Hill foul shots and then with two minutes to play Hill found himself open and hit a critical three to give his side the lead for the first time

since the first 30 seconds of the second quarter and they led by that three point margin as the two teams turned for home. The combination between premier guard Shane McDonald and quality big man Simon Conn had at times looked dangerous during the championship final so it was ironical that it was a misunderstanding between the two that turned the ball over with scores all tied away with five and a half minutes on the clock. That Pioneers turnover ended with an athletic dunk from Robinson, who took off from the foul line to jam the two points home and bring the

home crowd to its feet and , if possible, even louder in their bid to bring the Pioneers home. While Robinson was lighting up the Icehouse, Hill was on the bench getting treatment on a troublesome foot injury, which in the end kept him out of the rest of the contest. But as he has all season, Sutton took it on himself to take charge. He found space where there should have been none in the paint to sink a spectacular lay up and then 30 seconds later hit the scoreboard again and give the Pioneers a one point lead. McDonald then snatched it back with less than a minute to play

with both sides then missing opportunities to try and ice the game. And then came THAT shot – Allen etching himself into Pioneers folklore. Celebrations were somewhat muted because just as the 2003 South Conference championship team felt – the 2013 group have one more game to really cap off their stunning season and that is this weekend’s national final against Dandenong on their home pine on Sunday at 3pm (EST). Championship team photo courtesy of Gavin Male Designs.

WHAT THE PLAYERS SAID... “This is what I came down here for, I wanted to have some success with some guys I have played a lot of basketball with over the years. They’re like family to me. The first half was a bit of a struggle for us but in the third quarter we just persevered. We just didn’t give in, didn’t let it get negative. Before you knew it we were right back in the game. We‘ve got confidence in each other. The crowd was phenomenal, there were definitely times when I had some chills. Throughout the game they were behind us regardless of what was going on early. When Ben got the ball I was pretty nervous but he works on his perimeter shooting a lot and I knew he was definitely capable of making that shot, it looked like a good rhythm shot.” BRAD HILL “I was a lot more nervous two weeks ago. I think being sick this week took my focus away from the game and I was distracted and didn’t dwell too much on it. I was excited for the challenge of taking on Shane (McDonald) again - he’s the best guard in the league. When Sutts (Matt Sutton) got that lay up and we got the lead I felt like it gave us some momentum. The game was a war of attrition. There was a sense of urgency without it becoming panic. But there’s still a job to do - we need to win this weekend and finish the job off - I’m an all or nothing guy.” TOM DALY “I didn’t think twice about it (the last shot of the game). I caught the ball and I knew there was not much time, not enough for another pass and I knew I had to put it up. I knew my feet were set and it was a good shot to have. I always remember in the backyard counting down in my head and taking those shots to win a game. Sutts’ (Matt Sutton) lay up was memorable , the crowd went crazy and he gave a good fist pump which fired us all up.“ BEN ALLEN “I’m over the moon but at the same time we’ve got another game. We want to be overall champions. This is part of the puzzle but now we have an even bigger challenge. No one wants to be in foul trouble early (Sutton picked up three early) - you want to be out there and contributing but because I’d been so sick all week it was probably good for me to sit out for a bit and then I got re-energised. No matter what the score was, every huddle, every time-out was really positive. It was really important for me personally for us to get over the line for Eze (Erik Burdon). He didn’t say anything about it (his injury) and it was really good to have him here and we’re pretty hopeful he’ll be right for the national final. I know it’s cliched but this is one of the hardest working groups, we’ve got the guys that are willing to work hard day in and day out, we’ve worked out butts off and we deserve everything we’re getting.” MATT SUTTON (CAPTAIN)

SOUTH EAST COAST BASKETBALL LEAGUE GRAND FINAL WEEK It is Grand Final week on both fronts of Winter Season Basketball. The Pioneers will be preparing to achieve their ultimate goal, the National SEABL title, while local grand finals will be played over the week to decide the fifteen Basketball Winter Season Premiers. The Basketball Mount Gambier Winter Grand Finals Program runs over the full week and presentations will be made to premier teams and Senior Most Valuable Player Awards in the canteen complex after each grand final. The highlight of the week will be the South East Coast Men’s and Women’s Grand Finals on Wednesday night. The Cougars Club has made its way through the semi and preliminary finals to the grand finals in the men’s and women’s competitions. They take on Panthers-Wizards in the men’s final and Panthers in the women. It is expected that the quartet of outstanding juniors, who suit up for Cougars each week, will dominate the finals. They are Kane deWit, Sam Stafford, Braiden Ousey and Georgia Green. All four have turned in stellar performances as representatives of SA Country this year. Cougars Men have cruised through the finals series to date. They easily accounted for Panthers and an injury ravaged Bulldogs. Kane deWit shows leaderships skills beyond his years and has been a prolific scorer in recent weeks. The silky skills of the unassuming Sam Stafford have also been important in the team’s successes. Braiden Ousey is considered under-rated and can be relied upon to make the most of his minutes. He completes coach Ray deWit’s classy three pronged offence. Meanwhile, Panthers-Wizards have dealt with the loss of Ben Brumby to a long term injury, and Nick Morrison’s move overseas and easily won against an under-anned Bulldogs in the second semi-final. Matt Parslow has been in tremendous form over the season, leading the team’s scoring on many occasions while the unobtrusive Peter Loring and team stalwart Michael Stephens have been solid and consistent. The final is likely to be relatively close early but Cougars will probably apply full court pressure after half time and hence stamp their authority on this medal game. Cougars’ Georgia Green comes into the women’s final in red hot form. She scored 42 points of the 54 compiled by her team in their preliminary final win over Millicent last week. State teammate Brianna Walters has consistently led the scoring for Panthers this season. Panthers managed to hang on against a fast finishing Millicent in the second semi-final, while Cougars completely dominated the first quarter of their semi-final against Bulldogs, who then settled and showed how much they have improved in the remaining minutes through determined and competitive efforts. The results of previous games between these two will have little effect on the outcome on Wednesday night. Cougars’ leader Kirsty Egan is a class act when it comes to big games and she will take control if given the slightest degree of latitude. Her basketball smarts will set up opportunities for Green. In contrast Panthers will be looking to young gun Walters to assume the leadership role and at the same time be the go to player in offence. She will however have support in terms of experience in Melissa Remko and Sonia Bawden along with offensive threats in juniors Nicola Handreck and Eilish McKay. Cougars also have a blend of experience in Kylie Allen, Ebony Cunningham and Casey Horrigan.Cougars are renowned for their strong finishes in big games; consistency will therefore be the aim for Panthers on Wednesday night.

landslide

Millicent coach Donna Denton has claimed her seventh Western Border Netball Association A grade best and fairest, polling in every game and racking up 11 best on court nods in what was a 15 round season. There has been no doubt about the calibre of the long time Saints but this season, where the reigning premiers have had to rebuild more extensively than in the previous four premiership seasons, Denton has amazingly taken her game to another level,

and the win, and magnitude of it surprises no one. Denton polled 40 votes, with three second best and a third best rounding out her season. Team mate Lisa Duldig was runner-up on 26 votes in what has been a typical sight in the Millicent glory days with Denton and Audine Bryant often sharing the lion’s share of Millicent’s votes. Third place went to star West goaler Lisa Cram, who has clearly her side’s dominant player, was third on 22 votes, with North Gambier coach

Lisa King (South) and Malinda Markeiwicz (East) were the top vote getters for their respective clubs, with perhaps the biggest surprise being star defender Hayley Dunn, who like Denton, has scarily taken her game to another level this season, still continues to poll low numbers, despite being the premier defender in the association and her ability create turnovers with monotonous regularity every week. Dunn, of course, headlined the defensive area of the Western Border Netball Team of the Year, showing the respect she garners from oppositions clubs, where she was joined by two debutantes to the team of the year honours – Alyce Mourbey (South Gambier), who is starting to carve her own reputation and step out of the shadows of King, and North Gambier’s Melissa Renko, who has been a key component to the Tigers’ higher finish in 2013. The goaler positions were filled by Denton, who has been a walk up start since returning to the region in 2000, with the nine time premiership coach and player, also selected as coach of the year. First time selectee Chantelle Weir (South) was rewarded for what has been a breakout season for the young goaler, while Lisa Cram (West) was rewarded for yet another standout season, backing up from last year’s selection in her

return to Western Border ranks after a stint in the Mid South East Netball Association. The mid court roles went to 2013 runner-up best and fairest Duldig, with team mate Elise Reilly, who has made the wing defence bib her own this season, shutting down every one of the league’s dominant wing attacks at some point, also getting the nod, and Haylee Rhook (Casterton). The importance of Courtney Barry to South Gambier’s line-up was highlighted by her selection in the team, despite missing the entire third round after moving for work commitments. The Demons missed her pace, creativity and determined defensive efforts in the closing stages of the season. Young Cats shooter Shanae Guthrie was honoured as the best under 21 player. The athletic utility took her game to another level in 2013 when given the opportunity to settle in one position and she used her height

Here, at Limestone Coast Avanced Trees we have 25 % off all our bare rooted dormant weeping cherries for the next week unless sold out or they burst in to bud prior, in which case they will have to be potted up. mop top trees, including the new mop top silver birch - with its sparkling white trunk and tight green ball head it looks great in pots as well as formal gardens, as well as fruit trees and, of course, citrus. Spring is the best time to plant citrus trees. With the expansion of the advanced tree section again this spring, this will mean even more stock than ever will be on site and in larger numbers, saving us time bringing stock in from our growing facility. The expansion will allow homeowners mainly, the chance to browse an even broader range of trees which can be purchased straight away, although landscapers, councils and developers will benefit too from the added stock held. At present we have five grades of trees from advanced right through to semi mature in 200 litre bags, with plans to introduce more grades for everyone in every price point. The range includes deciduous, evergreen, native, fruit trees, citrus, including espaliered, as well as many eucalyptus and pittosporum varieties. In addition we will increase the number of in ground displays to show customers the ultimate size and shape that can be attained in a particular tree. Spring is the most spectacular time to look at and purchase

I’m writing this five days before the federal election. I’ve given up my will to live. It just doesn’t seem worth it anymore. One way I lose and the other way I lose too. No doubt there are others out there feeling the same. I feel it’s my responsibility to try and lift your flagging spirits so with that in mind I’d like to tell you why it will be so great in a week when the election is finally over. Firstly we won’t be sitting through continual updates of what these two clowns are up to, thinking and doing all day every day. It’s like what it would be like if your Facebook account came to life; someone telling you stuff that doesn’t really interest you 24 hours a day. I’m really looking forward to not having them trying to impress me all the time. It’d be nice to just get some honesty instead of them lying to me and telling me all the things they’re going to do with my money. I don’t know about you but I hate having someone sucking up to me and if it goes on for months it’s even worse.

Just tell me when it’s over by Robbie Tansel

Election campaigns are like the first few months of going out with a new girlfriend or boyfriend. You know, where you hide the real you and try and impress them with some make believe persona that doesn’t reflect who you really are? I don’t do that by the way. After a few months though you start to see little cracks appear in the act and in no time you’ve gone through the fart barrier and you’re peeing with the door open. The stupid thing is that’s generally the best point of the relationship if you ask me. You can see exactly what you’ve got and there’s no BS. You can relax and just be yourself. As you probably remember, Donna has vision issues so I could let myself go right from the start as far as pride in my personal appearance. Another great thing about the election being done is that there’ll be something other than politics in the paper and on the news. We’ve been missing out on some great stories because hating Tony and Kevin has been dominating column space and air time. For example, in Egypt authorities detained a migratory bird suspected

of being a spy. The bird was discovered with a strange box attached to its wing with police officers and the local head of security suspecting it was some sort of bomb or spying device. Government officials and a veterinary committee also got in on the issue and puzzled over the bird which was refusing to speak. Eventually they found that it was a tracking device used by French scientists to track migratory birds. Another huge story you probably missed in the political media circus over the last few weeks is the story of the Singaporean man with a collection of more than 6000 Barbie dolls. And lava lamps turned fifty…I could go on like this forever but by the time you read this I won’t need to. We’ll be getting a variety of news again. One of the scariest thing about the election being done is that heaps of the nutters who think that we should be voting them into Canberra will be loose in our communities again with nothing useful to do having missed out on being voted in. I think we should set up some sort of circus or travelling show for them. I’m firmly of the opinion that one of the biggest problems we have in our society is that there are

far too many freaks and not enough circuses. It wouldn’t be so bad if they were only in your community for a couple of weeks a year; you could go and pay to listen to them if you want and then they will be gone for the rest of the year. I’d also like to push that in future there should be a public holiday on the first work day following an election. We’ll have a huge party to celebrate it all being over for another few years and try to forget about how whoever gets voted in will probably be just as bad. Oops sorry. I’m meant to be providing optimism. Email me at robbietansel@gmail.com if you’re having some sort of party I can attend.

MOTOR Chapmion Holden has appointed 2011 Tour De France champion, Cadel Evans as its newest ambassador, signing a deal that will see him partner with Holden in a series of promotional activities to support the company’s range of vehicles. Holden Sales and Marketing executive director Philip Brook said that Cadel’s achievements as an Australian winning on the world stage made him an ideal ambassador for Holden. “Holden has already announced some blockbuster sporting partnerships this year, including the NRL and Collingwood Football Club and we’re very proud that Cadel Evans will also be representing our brand in Australia and around the world,” he said. “Cadel’s achievements in cycling make him a sporting icon, from winning the Tour de France in 2011 to being one of only four cyclists to ever finish on the podium for each Grand Tour event and also win a Road World

Championship. He is a true Aussie champion.” Holden has been a strong supporter of cycling for many years and established the Holden Women’s Cycling Team in 2012. “With more cycles sold each year than cars, cycling has become a national pastime for Australians,” Mr Brook said. “The growth in participation reflects the success of elite sportsmen and women like Cadel Evans and our own women’s cycling team. “Like Cadel, Holden has also taken on the world this year, recently

setting a world record lap for a production commercial vehicle at the punishing Nürburgring and recommencing our US export program, sending the impressive Chevrolet SS to America as their newest rear-wheel-drive performance sedan.” At home in Europe last month, Cadel Evans took the new Holden VF SS-V Redline Ute for a spin on some of Italy’s most spectacular roads. Accompanied by his dog, Molly, Cadel got behind the wheel of the same record breaking ute that features in the

successful Nürburgring world record lap and TV commercial, putting his foot to a very different pedal. “It was very special to take the new VF Ute for a drive on roads I love and have come to consider my European backyard,” said Evans. “Back at home, I’ve had a Holden in my Australian garage for as long as I can remember and I’m honoured to be representing a brand that I have such passion for.” Above - Cadel Evans. © GM Corp.
