COVER From

the paddock to the catwalk to the plate - it’s all about the sheep

Sheepvention 2013 will be a wool lovers paradise. From the paddock to the (fashion) parade, all aspects of the wool industry are covered. A choc-a-bloc ram sale, Merino show, ewe weaner competition, and stud display will operate throughout Sheepvention on August 5 and 6 at the Hamilton Showgrounds. One of the program highlights will be Lee Kernaghan performing Monday, August 5, at 4.30pm in the Fashion Pavilion and he will be on Rural Co’s Site on Tuesday from 9am12noon. Whether you’re a wool grower, buyer, stud breeder or just like wearing Merino wool socks, Sheepvention is the place to find everything you need. “Sheepvention is obviously sheepcentric so the vast majority of the event revolves around the sheep industry,” said Sheepvention president Rob Hartwich. “Our inventions competition is geared towards the sheep industry with a range of animal health and sheep handling inventions showcased. “There’s the shearing events and of course the wool crafts and fashions.” A highlight is the Discover Wool Ace Radio 3HA

Fashion Event. The premiere of Discover Wool will again be on Sunday, August 4, and will run throughout Sheepvention. Patrons will see top wool fashions including designs from Alex Perry, Farage, Emu, Sabatini, Flowers for a Vagabond, Sportscraft, Ellery, Country Road and Vie Active. Incorporated into Discover Wool is the Australasian Young Designer Wool Award entries. Garments entered into the awards will include corporate, race wear, evening wear, fantasy/ theatrical, streetwear/ sportswear. There is more than $15,000 in cash and prizes supplied by ACE Radio 3HA offered to the winners including the Handbury Scholarship to the Instituto Marangoni Fashion School. 2011 winner Kitty Scott will be taking her scholarship during August to the Instituto Marangoni. Since winning the Australasian Young Designer Wool Awards at Sheepvention, Kitty travelled around South East Asia for five months and was then offered a position at Collette Dinnigan in Sydney. Kitty said the Sheepvention opportunity gave her the drive to pursue a dream to have my own label. “Cleonie

will be sold throughout boutiques in Australia,” she said. Wool and crafts are also an important aspect of Sheepvention. The Home Paddock Pavilion will showcase crafts, gardening and wool. Children can learn to knit at the Working with Wool site or Sow a Seed in the Kids’ Gardening area. The Sheepvention Young Chef Challenge is also underway with the particiapting apprentices and chefs under 25 years of age now showcasing their dishes for patrons to try until the end of July. The winning chef will receive $1000 thanks to JM Ellis and Co and the Hamilton Spectator. 19 year old Dean McDonnell representing the Caledonian has created a rack of lamb marinated in a sticky coriander and mint marinade served with Shiraz honey sauce and vegetables. 2011 winner Gabrielle Hutchins from Café Catalpa will present a lamb loin with roasted vegetables and ravioli with a lamb reduction. Rhoy Treves of the Commercial Hotel is creating a complex dish of lamb cutlet in a herb crumb “a la brule doit” with a Meredith Dairy pecorino cheese emulsion, lamb fillet cooked for eight hours, pan seared and

served with crispy witlof, asparagus and a balsamic vinegar reduction. A more traditional lamb dish of rolled roast lamb with a clarified gravy served with a side of roasted vegetables with a difference is Joshua Hollyoak’s creation from the Commercial Hotel. The winner and runner up will present their lamb dish during Sheepvention in the Taste of the Great South West Marquee. The stage program will also feature lamb cooking demonstrations from Ricarrdo Momeso. Meat and Livestock Australia will present on the eating quality of lamb plus Grampians Estate will discuss food and wine matching. The Taste of the Great Southwest Marquee will be full of gourmet produce to try and buy throughout Sheepvention. There will be delicious delights including preserves, cheeses, spices, honey, olives, chocolate, specialty teas and coffees. A wide range of wineries will also provide tastings and great show specials. 2013 sees an exciting new era for the Hamilton Young Auctioneers Competition. With the closure of Beef Expo, the Young Auctioneers Event will now

Rebecca Foreman admitted that she couldn’t imagine working without Lauren as part of the team. “It is a real pleasure to have Lauren as our apprentice at Red Ivie Hairdressing,” Rebecca said. “After relocating to Mount Gambier from Bordertown, Lauren has managed to balance all of her commitments both in work and personal life. Lauren always shows our clients empathy and respect and her attitude and work level always remain consistent. Her abilities and passion have been evident right from the start.” Ian Giles was a respected colleague and friend at Group Training Employment through

his role as operations manager. After his passing in 2009 GTE decided to pay tribute to Ian by offering an annual scholarship in his memory. The scholarship is open to all apprentices in our region and is made to financially assist an apprentice to complete their training in their chosen trade. GTE emphasise the importance of training young people entering in the work force and retaining those skills in the community. joining Sandford in the South West District Football Netball League as a 17 year old. It was there, under coach Barb Toma, that Trictia enjoyed

most of her senior success as a netballer, playing alongside respected players including Lois Lowe, Karen O’Connell, Tracie Layley and eventually Natalie Rhook (Fidler) and Haylee Rhook (Lowe), who she has also played alongside at Casterton and now coaches in her latest role at the Cats, as the A grade coach. Trictia ventured to Island Park basically because she wanted to play with her sister Cindy, and to give her talented daughters a chance to test themselves in the stronger Western Border competition. That was in 1999 and she has

become as synonymous with the Cats as any player, official or administrator. A quality mid courter and reliable, creative goaler, Trictia has made her mark at the Casterton Netball Club. She is an eight time best and fairest winner at A and A Reserve level, has won the Western Border Netball Association best and fairest in A Reserve twice and also been runner-up on two occasions and represented Western Border at the SA Country Netball Championships as a Masters team member – a team which took out the championship. that she is back in charge of the Cats’ top side as it really starts to emerge as a finals contender. She has been one of the key personnel at the club in charge of developing its wealth of young talent and has continued playing at A Reserve level, being part of the 2010 runner-up combination that came so close to toppling the unbeatable West Gambier side. She is currently the playing coach of the A Reserve Casterton team and if you read the scores every week, is more often than not still acknowledged in her team’s best. Club president Judith Cameron and head coach Leanne Perry both praised the commitment of Trictia to the club. “Tricita has been committed and dedicated to the Casterton Football Netball Club for almost 15 years and she has shared her skill, knowledge and enthusiasm as a player, umpire, coach, of juniors and seniors, and has been a team mate, not only with her daughters but with so many young players along the way,” they said. “Her work ethic at training is a testament to her and she is a fine example and asset to our club.” Trictia has also been a huge asset for the Western Border Netball Association, where she was records officer for 10 years. She has also been part of umpiring panels for finals. Photo courtesy of Ian Lewis - Casterton News.

Her biggest improvement was in the 200m individual medley where she saw a 15.96 second drop from her time at the State Long Course Championships in December. club makes donation to mental health group

The Lioness Club of Mount Gambier donated $500 to the South East Junction. The Junction is providing a safe and supportive environment for people with mental health issues by organising a range of activities which foster attendees’ independence, self-worth, confidence and self-esteem, as well as improving coping and other skills. Women still make up more than 80% of the total number of participants and members in the Junction, supporting

them through self-esteem courses for women and learning other skills, including coping skills, budgeting and literacy. Training for volunteers is high on The Junction’s activity list. Besides gaining confidence and self- esteem members also move on from having need of support to offering others support and being part of the management committee and daily management.

LOCAL Generous Last October, passionate quilter Kaye Dalgarno had an idea. A member of the Pine Tree Quilters group, she thought the group should create and donate some quilts to the region’s foster children. The group was only too keen to make the project a priority and while realising there was up to 80 children at any one time in this region in foster care, that a realistic goal for the hobbyists would be to aim for 30 quilts. Last Monday they unveiled 94 quilts in a display at Mount Gambier’s Main Corner with the grand total being handed over to ac.care and Families SA now totalling 106. Pine Tree Quilters president Judy

gifts to have an impact for life

Klingberg said the group had been overwhelmed by the support their initiative had received and by she had been amazed and humbled by how willingly and enthusiastically people jumped on board. Donation of the wadding, one of the more expensive elements to a quilt, from Naracoorte’s Mini Jumbuk, was one of the sweeping gestures, as was the donation of excess quilts from a lady who had recently moved to Mount Gambier after closing her quilt store in Eltham. “She had been trying to decide what to do with the stock and she heard about this project and immediately donated those quilts,” Judy said. “We are

certainly going to continue this as an ongoing project for as long as we can.” Pine Tree Quilters have members as far afield as Warrnambool and many of those members were there at the handover to ac.care and Families SA. “You can all be proud of yourselves,” the club president said at Monday’s handover. “Because we‘ve achieved something in half the time and with more than double what we aimed for.” ac.care CEO Rob Foggo said with a sister-in-law as a quilter he was all too aware of the hard work, not to mention love and care, that goes into the creation of a quilt and just what handmade quilts mean to those who receive

them. “I know the quilt she has given us will be handed down over the generations, it is a special gift,” he said. “And to think you would think of doing something like this for the region’s foster children is such a wonderful thought.” He said the Limestone Coast had 60 foster families on its books and that between 70 and 80 children were in care at any one time. Families SA supervisor Leesa Reid also said she understood the efforts of the Pine Tree Quilters. “My mum is a quilter,” she said. “This is an amazing gift to give to these children. Leaving your own family, no matter now dysfunctional or abusive they are is really difficult.”She pointed out children can even be separated from siblings, have to leave friends behind, or even switch schools and it is a tough transition. “While the quilts will be a comfort in themselves in terms of just keeping warm, it’s what the quilt means that is so special,” Leesa said. “It is a gift for life - it’s a sign that

someone cared enough about them to do something this special for them and to give them something that is just for them.” Above - ac.care CEO Rob Foggo, project coordinator Kaye Dalgarno, Families SA supervisor Leesa Reid and Pine Tree Quilters president Judy Klingberg at the foster children quilt handover.

the tables in fundraising initiative

It is not uncommon to see fundraising programs to support people with disabilities. What is different about the STAY Residential Services Association’s `Fundraising for Community Inclusion’ program in Hamilton is that it is people with disabilities doing the fundraising not for themselves but for others in the community. The clients and residents of STAY (Support To Accommodate You) Residential Services have already held a barbecue that raised $400 for the Uniting Church Pastoral Care and Food Distribution Program and a movie night that raised $250 for the Riding for the Disabled Program. This Saturday they will be

holding their next fundraising event with a dance at the Hamilton Institute for Rural Learning and a garage sale in November is also on the agenda. The residents will decide which charity or community program to support from their upcoming fund-raising efforts. CEO Maree Sandford said the STAY Community Program was building residents’ sense of community involvement. “We don’t usually undertake fund-raising activities for ourselves but it struck me as being empowering for the clients if they could plan and organise events to help others in the community,” Ms Sandford said. The plan has been a huge hit. “The clients really enjoy the opportunity, especially when they get to

donate the money,” she said. “It enhances the lives of our clients, promotes community participation and helps a group in our community.” The residents decide on what fund-raising events to hold and then vote on which charity or community group they want to support. “It is a great way for them to support other people in the

community and to become more aware of the other types of programs that are available around Hamilton,” Ms Sandford said. The July 27 dance is open to everyone in the community and will feature performer Daffy Steer. Residents have not yet decided on a recipient for the funds. Hamiltonbased STAY Residential Services Association Inc. is a non-government, notfor-profit community service organisation funded by the Department of Human Services. It supports 16 people with a disability who live in STAY residential homes, provides respite for 47 people and supports other people with disabilities in the community. FEATURE ADVERTORIAL I MEET OUR LOCAL EXPERTS

Hurst Camera House - Mount Gambier “I have always wanted to own my own business and once I started my TAFE course I knew it would be something in this area. I love graphic design and working with photoshop and now that I’ve had time to gain experience across every aspect of the industry I know I am ready to take charge and to put my own ideas into practice.” Adrian Hurst Adrian Hurst - Multimedia guru & store owner Last Tuesday, Adrian Hurst lived out a dream - he opened the doors to his own business. It was a dream born when he first started his traineeship at Mount Gambier’s Camera House under then owner Trevor Prettejohn and Trevor handed over the keys and the business to his protege last week. Adrian’s journey from trainee to business owner though has had many twists and turns as he looked to make sure he understood every aspect of the industry before taking the plunge and running his own operation. When he left school he studied Multimedia at TAFE and that’s how he came by the job with Trevor at Camera House. “He approached the TAFE class because he was looking to put someone on,” Adrian said. “He looked over some of my work, I had an interview and I got the traineeship.” Adrian joined Trevor when the industry was in the throes of going digital and he was an integral part of setting up the photo restoration service, card and invitation design and printing and other value-adding services to the business. Adrian spent four and half years with Trevor, learning the ins and outs of the business before leaving to manage Cartridge World for 12 months. He then moved to Green Triangle Electronics where he worked in the service department, rounding out his education in the business to the point now that he wears every hat possible - manager/owner, customer service representative, graphic designer, service technician. “When I left working for Trevor the first time it was all about gaining as much experience as possible and getting as many new ideas as possible from working in different areas of the industry,”

Adrian said. “That experience and the study I’ve done has allowed me to provide a better service now at Camera House.” Adrian has actually been back at Camera House for the past two and a half years as manager, when Trevor lured him back and hinted that it would be with a view to taking over the enterprise. So Adrian saved hard and also continued to build up his already impressive skill base. He completed a Diploma of Business Management to go with his Multimedia qualifications from TAFE and his Certificate II in Information Technology as part of his traineeship. Adrian’s 11 year old son Cameron has also been a motivating factor in taking on the business. “You just realise that you have to work hard to provide a great future for your children and Cameron is definitely a huge motivation in taking this on and working hard to build and develop the business,” he said. And if there’s one thing he’s learnt above all during his career thus far, it is the paramount importance of customer service. “As far as I’m concerned that’s the most important thing,” Adrian said. “The team here at Camera House want to be able to help you with anything you need.” And that could range from frames to camera accessories, from printing images to designing and printing special occasion cards. Already Adrian has come up with a marketing blueprint and a masterplan for new product ranges and services. Camera House will be significantly increasing its wedding product range, from place to thank you cards, to reception signs and coasters. The printing options available are also set to increase with the introduction of shoe box scanning to

save your photos to DVD and a new slide scanner that will also convert those old memories to a new format. “Basically anything you have in your head that you would like done with your images, we can do,” Adrian said. He also already has plans to revamp the store, removing the dark room, and making even more customer friendly displays. “I want to keep it looking fresh and new so there is always something for the regular customers to enjoy and something to attract new customers through the door,” Adrian said. He also designed the store’s website and facebook page. Hurst Camera House Mount Gambier is at 11a James Street or call Adrian and his friendly expert team on (08) 8725 4010. ac.care “I wanted to be able to help my community and this is what drew me to ac.care. I often think that old phrase ‘there but for the grace of God, go I’ could apply to any one of us. So many of the people who come to us find themselves in circumstances that they never thought they would experience. Many are reluctant to seek help because they have never needed help in the past. I have been able to do my job because of the great dedication and skills that staff and volunteers bring to ac.care, and also because of the support we receive from the community via their cash, and in-kind donations.” Rob Foggo Rob Foggo - ac.care CEO Rob Foggo is the CEO of ac.care, a charity started in Mount Gambier by the local Anglican parish, and that now provides services throughout the Limestone Coast, Murraylands and Riverland. Rob has broad experience and training in the management of a community service organisation, youth work, foster care and community development. He grew up in Penola and has always lived in the Limestone Coast. In recognition of his experience and knowledge in the delivery of community services in a regional setting, Rob is a member of several State bodies and working groups, whose task it is to consider the needs of the most disadvantaged and marginalised members of our community. Rob is respected by his peers for his integrity, compassion, positive attitude and strong sense of social justice. ac.care is a charity that started in Mount Gambier in 1986 and since 1993, Rob, as CEO, has led the organisation through a period of significant change. He has overseen the growth of the organisation from one social worker and a parttime administration worker delivering a foster care service in Mount Gambier, to today employing 105 full time equivalent people across the Limestone Coast, Murraylands and Riverland regions. In the Limestone Coast ac.care employs 57 full time equivalent

staff, with 28 volunteers. The head office remains in Mount Gambier, and Rob has also overseen the establishment of offices in Millicent, Naracoorte and Bordertown, the formation of Mount Gambier’s Family Relationship Centre and the auspicing of the Mount Gambier and Millicent Community Centres, and the establishment of services in Berri, Waikerie and Murray Bridge. As part of the homelessness services auspiced by ac.care, Rob has also seen the growth of the ac.care Housing Association, which provides 114 low income homes across the Limestone Coast region with a further 100 houses in the Murraylands and Riverland regions. ac.care’s objectives are: •Alleviating homelessness. •Building communities. •Promoting learning. •Reducing poverty. •Sharing cultures. •Strengthening families. •Supporting children. •Working towards sustainability.

And they work to achieve these by: •Recruiting, assessing, training, supporting and maintaining foster carers. •Providing a range of suitable accommodation facilities for the purpose of placing people in need with low cost, emergency, short or medium term or respite, or special needs housing. •Providing a range of services that support individuals and families. •Developing life skills for people from all cultures and backgrounds, and improving participation in family and community life. •Developing and providing other services as community needs. As a charity ac.care relies on donations to fund services that are otherwise unfunded. And as a charity that started in Mount Gambier and still has their head office there, they guarantee that 100% of donations remain in the Limestone Coast for services for local people. Wattle Range Funerals “We will continue to expand our business being ever so careful not to lose that personal, caring touch. We are proud of our reputation and word of mouth recommendations have been a huge reason for our growth.” Kerryn Bennett

Kerryn & Mark Bennett - Funeral directors Wattle Range Funerals has been operating from Millicent since the 1930s - it was a family business then just as it is a family business now. In fact, it has only been in the hands of three families in its eighty year history - the Giddings, the Heslops and now the Bennetts. Mark and Kerryn are all about taking the stress out of organising your loved one’s funeral, and are experienced at dealing with families at one of the most difficult times of their lives. They offer their services throughout the South East and

are experienced in helping families say goodbye to their loved one in the manner they always hoped. Kerryn had a background in the industry in Adelaide and when an opportunity came up for this local girl to return home and buy Wattle Range Funerals in 2006, the timing just seemed right. After working at a school dentist and a medical clinic, Kerryn spent time training at both White Ladies and Harrison Funerals. Mark, who has always been in the people care business, left his supervisor role at Bedford Industries and with their three children in tow, they returned to Millicent. Mark has also worked from Masonic Homes in a retirement village/hostel and has studied counselling through TAFE. Wattle Range Funerals offers 24 hour a day, seven day a week service which specialises in creating tailor made funerals. They specialise in pre-paid and pre-arranged funerals, as well as religious and non-religious burials or cremations. Kerryn is Wattle Range Funerals’ qualified mortician and they also have two celebrants on staff, that work closely with the families during the planning of the funeral. “We

Lifestyle1.net - 027

are always dealing with people in their time of grief,” Kerryn said. “We are the person the family has put their trust in so they can say goodbye to a loved one in the manner they wanted.” That’s a responsibility Mark and Kerryn and their team take seriously and given that word of mouth is their best marketing, it is clear they are doing something right. Wattle Range Funerals do not charge transfer fees for anyone within a 110 kilometre radius. “We believe the South East is one big community,” Kerryn said. Mark and Kerryn have conducted funeral industry information sessions for local health care providers, having facilitated sessions at Longridge aged care, Sheoak Lodge and both Millicent and Penola hospitals. They are proud to have Joy Williams acting as their Naracoorte agent. Joy operates Flowertechnics, and is contactable on (08) 8762 0113. Mark, Kerryn, Joy and staff encourage you to contact them with all your funeral inquiries.

COLLECTED STUPIDITY As you know, it is my policy to avoid talking about things that I don’t know anything about. Quite obviously this leaves me with very little

How to fix politics by Robbie Tansel

to talk about. This week I’ve decided to talk about politics even though I know nothing about it because I think I have a couple of good ideas how

to solve the predicament we’re in. I don’t know about you but I’m finding the election campaign pretty dull. You’ve got one side who

only

$10ea

continue to tell us how bad the other side is. Then you’ve got the side who have been in power who seem to be trying to pull apart their own party and what they have done over the last few years. Apparently not only do the opposition disagree with what the government have been doing, but so do the government. It’s crazy. One of the issues is that the media are letting themselves be manipulated by the politicians. The pollie’s staffs just give the media a call and the journalists follow them to the next cheesy appearance at a supermarket or school. I think we’re a bit past baby kissing in the year 2013. The media need to turn it into a reality show. They need to turn it around and

say, “You can have your air time but you’re going to have it on our terms. You want to tell us about your latest environmental policy, well you’ll need to do it while you make a lemon meringue pie.” If they want to announce that they’re spending six billion dollars redeveloping some highway, they have to do it while completing a commando obstacle course through mud and over walls, while being yelled at by two buff personal trainers. If they want to tell us all about how they plan on slowly destroying our country and the future of our children, they have to do it while renovating a rundown unit in Melbourne. Or perhaps a rundown Tansel mansion in Mount

Gambier… Imagine how much better we’d get to know our candidates. We wouldn’t just see the sanitised image that they and their handlers want to present us. We’d see the real candidate and how they cope when out of their comfort zone. The candidates need the media more than the media need the politicians. I’m not even joking. I think I’m really onto something. My second solution to our political issues has been staring me in the face for months too, and I’m pretty disappointed that I didn’t think of it earlier. Lance Armstrong took performance enhancing drugs and won seven Tour de France cycling races. Asafa Powell and Tyson Gay take performance enhancing drugs and are two of the fastest men in the world. Several football players may or may not have taken performance enhancing substances and produced better results. So isn’t it time we got our representatives onto performance enhancing substances? Imagine how

much better they could do their jobs if we had them all juiced up. I know what you’re thinking. “You’ve seen the mess they’ve been making of things, Robbie. Aren’t they already on drugs? Surely they wouldn’t be doing this dumb stuff straight?” That’s a fair point but obviously they’re not performance enhancing. Let’s get ourselves some sports scientists, start pumping some anti-obesity drugs into them and keep tweaking until we start making a difference. Surely if it’s good enough for our sports people it’s good enough for the people who actually make a difference in our day to day lives. Anyway, I think it’s time that all of our candidates understood that the road to Parliament House goes through Tansel-ville and I’ll be expecting to hear from them over the next week to see whether they’re prepared to commit to these initiatives. LOCAL Luxury A unique eco-luxury accommodation venture has just been launched in South Australia’s Limestone Coast. After

ecolodge right on our doorstep more than five decades of ownership, the McGregor family are now welcoming overnight guests to their 10,000 hectare working

property, Willalooka Pastoral Company. Visitors are guaranteed absolute privacy at the self-contained, four-

bedroom Willalooka Wetlands EcoLodge, which has its own airstrip and all-weather vehicle access. Set in total seclusion amongst gum trees overlooking the ‘big reedy’ swamp, the EcoLodge is superbly appointed and offers the perfect escape for couples or families, promising total serenity and the chance to embrace nature. The ultra-modern modular building operates entirely off-grid, creating its own power, collecting its own rainwater, and disposing of its own waste, and the combination of spotted gum cladding, steelframed decking and limestone sourced on the property has created a naturally blended palette of materials that allows the accommodation to sit comfortably within

its environment. “There is nothing like this in the region - this is an opportunity to experience eco living in a pristine outback wilderness,” said Regional Development Australia – Limestone Coast tourism development officer Biddie Shearing. “The location halfway between Mount Gambier and Adelaide makes it the ideal midway meeting place for friends and families, but the lodge is also situated on the Melbourne to Adelaide self-drive touring route, and would make the perfect rest stop for weary travellers.” Guests will enjoy uninterrupted views of the Willalooka Wetlands, bushwalks and bird watching with supplied picnic packs, cooking in the stainless steel ‘chef style’ kitchen,

peaceful barbecues beneath the stars on the huge outdoor deck, and a good read with a glass of local wine in front of the cosy character fireplace. “The house has been architecturally designed so that the front two modules contain the master bedroom with a luxurious en suite featuring a double fitted shower, laundry and main living areas, while the rear module contains three additional bedrooms, a second bathroom with a deep bath, and a living area which can be completely closed off by a large sliding panel,” said owner Kate McGregor. “This enables the home to effortlessly expand or contract depending on the number of guests.” Log onto www.willalooka.com.au for more details.

close to glory for local golfers

The Golf South Australia Junior Country Pennant Series known as the Brett Ogle Cup was recently played at the Murray Bridge Golf Club. The event sees all eight country regions from all over South Australia play a stroke qualifying round where the best five scores from each region count towards being graded into two divisions and playing three rounds of stroke matchplay to find the winner. This event has been dominated in recent years by the Golf South East and Southern Golf Associations, with the two regions amazingly sharing the honours each alternate year for the last five years. If this pattern was going to continue the South East team needed to dig deep

and rise to the occasion with an almost new team comprising four debutantes containing three aged 13 years and under competing in the under 18 age event. This year’s team was lead by Robe’s Ben Tucker and Mount Gambier’s Caleb Perry, himself in only his second series and the debutantes Harry Coote, from Millicent, and Mount Gambier’s Bryce Smith, Jhett Perry and Matthew Morgan. The stroke qualifying round saw the South East achieve its aim of qualifying in division one in second place with a team score of 393 to traditional rival Southern who shot 378. The best performed South East golfer was 13 year old Caleb Perry, who shot 74,

placing him in the top five performers. Round one of the matchplay saw South East taking on Northern, which the South East won 5-0. The second round saw South East take on the revitalised Riverland team, which had already defeated Southern in a shock round one result, with handicaps suggesting South East should be able to put themselves into a strong position to stake a claim on the cup. With Ben Tucker 4/3 and Caleb Perry 7/6 firmly in control of their matches at numbers one and two, the result was needed from the lower order to claim victory. In what developed into a real dog fight it was the Riverland who claimed all three remaining matches with Bryce Smith going down 2/1 and both Harry Coote and Matthew Morgan losing on the18th. This result set the scenario of South East needing to beat traditional rival

Southern in the last round and relying on Northern to defeat the all conquering Riverland to claim the cup. Winless over the first two rounds, Southern seemed determined to kill South East’s chances of claiming the cup. At number five, Jhett Perry shot away to a 4 up lead before giving back 3 of them halfway through the second nine. Showing great composure for his tender years he closed the match out on the 17th hole winning 2 /1. At number four, Harry Coote had a titanic battle being square or one down all game until finishing strongly with some impressive ball striking and claiming a win of 2 up. Bryce Smith, at number three, was never headed in his match after starting like a house on fire to record his best win in the series of 5/4. At number two, Caleb Perry made it a clean sweep of wins for himself never being troubled with a classy 5/3 result. With the match over and in the bag for the South East, number one Ben Tucker, who was under an illness cloud, fought on strongly before going down 3/2. It went down to the 24th hole but Riverland won their final round to secure the Brett Ogle title.

under team and has been starting on the bench for the winless A grade line-up. Megan also co-coaches the 13 and under Kongorong team with her mother Ella. Megan clearly has what selectors are after as she was only able to attend one preliminary trial due to a family holiday but was still able to make the final 40, which was then whittled down to the final 12 at the final trial. Megan has been given a fitness program and has basically been in Adelaide every Sunday for training for the past two months. She also attended a training camp last week - the final hit out before the girls head to Tasmania for the Launceston national championships from July 27-August 2. South Australia finished third in this age group last year. “It has been really good to be involved in trainings that are so intense and involve so much running and skill work,” Megan said. “You seem to improve just playing with better players and players that are a similar standard to you.” The coaching has also been invaluable to Megan’s development. Amanda Shattock is the head coach and Kellie Casserley is her assistant - both girls work together at the Matrics Netball Club.

Megan has been a Kongorong netballer since the age of eight and has represented the Mid South East Netball Association at junior level since 13 and unders. In 2010 when she was part of the State SAPSSASA netball team, Megan was a goal attack. This time round, after being viewed by selectors in every position, she is being set for a mid court role at centre and wing defence. She currently plays goal defence for the Hawks in the 15 and

ADVERTORIAL I GARDENARIUM

Pruning made easy Eminent South East rosarian, ABC Gardening talkback host and horticulturalist Calum Haygarth will be conducting rose pruning demonstration and fruit trees pruning demonstrations to the public this Sunday in Mount Gambier. All facets of corrective pruning, when to prune and how will be demonstrated along with tips and advice on rose and fruit trees care including spraying for pest and disease control, fertilising. There will be the opportunity to ask questions and members of the public are encouraged to bring in photos of their trees

or roses that they are not sure where to start for some professional advice. “Most people generally prune far too early and the consequences of this are stimulating the plants to grow at the wrong time of year and new shoots that develop can be easily damaged by frosts, and the rule of thumb is the colder the climate the later you prune,” Mr Haygarth said. “Once you understand the reason for pruning, this becomes apparent.” Mr Haygarth said that many people are scared to prune hard and also are unaware that new seasons bare rooted roses, some

ornamental trees and fruit trees require pruning when being planted, to not only balance out the root system that has been removed but to shape the plants for the rest of their lives and most importantly encourage fruit and flower production. A presentation on the 2013 newly released roses and fruit and ornamental trees will also be conducted and these will be available for purchase on the day. Entry is free and you are encouraged to bring an umbrella just in case.

The South East has proven to be the strongest region in South Australia in junior netball, taking two of the three titles on offer at the South Australian regional Netball Championships and making the semi finals in the other. Three players were also selected in the carnival top 10 playersRLA62833 in their age group. The 15 and under team, coached by East Gambier’s Suzie Mitchell, was by far the most impressive of the three South East outfits, going through the competition undefeated and winning their semi final, against Northern, by 17 goals and the grand final, against Spencer, by 15 goals. Their closest contest of the two day event was a seven goal victory in round seven over Southern, which was eventually knocked out at semi final stage. East Gambier’s Tenille Gray was rewarded for her stellar championships with selection in the 15 and under top 10 players, while Mundulla’s Maisie Nankivell was also selected in the elite group. In contrast,

the 17 and under competition was tight and the South East team, coached by the academy’s head coach, Tantanoola’s Kerri-Lee Bromley, won their round robin clashes by two, one, two, three, 14, three and seven goals, interspersed with an eight goal loss to eventual grand final opponent Mount Lofty - a match the South East won in a nailbiter by one goal. They advanced to the championship decider with another tight tussle, a two goal victory over Southern. Saints’ goaler Tabatha Sanderson was selected in the 17 and under top 10 players of the championships. The 13 and under line-up won five of its eight preliminary matches to secure a semi final berth, but was unable to match it with the Southern line-up, losing 12-19, a two goal improvement on their round robin result. For the first time, no 13 and under top 10 was selected. Above (top) - The all-conquering 15 and under South East Regional Netball Academy team. Above - Championships winning 17 and under South East Regional Netball Academy team. Left - the 13 and under South East Regional Netball Academy team made the semi finals.

quickly progress from multiclub to South Australian and Victorian State round status, as well as a round of the Vipertrak tri series, in conjunction with Sea Lake and Waikerie. With a combination of rolling green hills, picturesque views and a format based on competitor enjoyment, many off roaders have already made the Off Road Masters a must do event on their calendar. The club’s focus is to see the event continue on for many years to come, so with this in mind the outright winner each year will have their name embossed on the OFF ROAD MASTERS CUP, an impressive perpetual cup which will be sure to have crews giving 110% to get their name etched in history. Glenn Owen and Troy Zytveld, winners of the Off Road Masters last year, were the first names to be enscribed on the Masters Cup. The schedule for the weekend will include scrutineering on Friday evening, where all race vehicles are thoroughly safety-checked. The action on Saturday starts at 11.30am where all race cars will do prologue – which is a shortened lap of the race track to gain their starting position for the race. At the conclusion of prologue, the off road

race cars will then line up in their respective prologue position to battle out the first two laps of the course. This will be followed by five further laps including pit breaks beginning at 9.30am on Sunday morning for a total race length of around 300kms. A variety of catering will be provided all weekend. Adam Becker will be providing entertainment for the kids with his remote control car display before and after the race on Saturday. Flat Out Jumping Castles will also be onsite to keep the kids
