BOONAROO SIRE POWER

oonaroo will offer a line of 115 Angus bulls, featuring soft, well-muscled bulls with outstanding structure and docile temperament. We have focused heavily on fat cover and muscling in our breeding program, combining these two traits to produce cattle which can be run at higher stocking rates without losing their ability to finish and be fertile. New Zealand genetics feature strongly in the catalogue, providing a robust, sound and deep-bodied line of bulls. Boonaroo sale bulls are well grown spring drop bulls with weights from 600-820kg by sale day.

In 2020, we have four outstanding New Zealand bred sires contributing to the sale line-up, a Maturi Outlier son Meribrook Livewire L12, Merchiston Steakhouse, Merchiston Stoker and the famous Atahua Freedom. These sires bring complete outcross genetics to all Boonaroo clients. About half of our sale bulls are a strong line of “curve benders” confirmed by our policy of weighing all calves at birth. These bulls not only are highly suitable for heifer joining, but they still carry the frame, carcase, growth and outstanding maternal traits that guarantee these sires to be quality bulls to be used over your cows once their physical size sees them no longer suitable for heifer joining. These sires include: TeMania Kasbah K338 and the $30,000 TeMania Lackey L27, Jarobee Bartel K117 and K129, these bulls have consistently produced calves with these qualities. Occasionally we are asked why we choose to market spring drop bulls and not two year olds. We do find it a good fit for our production system, but most importantly it’s for the benefit of our clients. At 18 months of age our sale bulls average around 700kg,

putting them around 750kg at joining in May. With the incredible growth the modern Angus genetics possess, at two years of age these bulls would be averaging around 950kg and putting them at the upper limit as to what the average 350-400kg heifer can handle when joined at 15 months of age, not only increasing the risk to the heifer but also to the bull itself.

QUALITY FEMALES AT WOONALLEE

T

he key to any successful livestock breeding program is the quality of its females. That has certainly been the secret behind the outstanding quality cattle that Tom and Lizzy Baker and their great team at Woonallee Simmentals have been able to offer each year from the stud’s foundation well over five decades ago. The Woonallee stud’s breeding herd has grown substantially in the last couple of decades in particular, to satisfy not only the existing demand, but to also allow expansion of their genetics into new areas without a drop off in quality. In 2019 the Baker family successfully launched Woonallee N in a combined sale with Nobbs Cattle Co in Queensland, where the Bakers had a total clearance of 55 Simmental bulls at a $6472 average. They also combined with Nampara Angus in a spring sale at Mortlake, Vic, selling 23 Black Simmentals at a $6154 average. “These two sales were about taking

the cattle to the people into areas that we identified as potential new growth areas, introducing our Simmental genetics and what they are capable of doing to a new group of commercial beef cattle producers,” Tom Baker said.

and class will lead the sale off at lot 1. Tom Baker said the traditional bulls are all very even in type, structural integrity and docility, while displaying excellent carcase traits with softness. Other sires of prominence include Starwest Pol Blueprint, Magpie Park Master and Woonallee Los Angeles.

“While our stud sales’ successes have made the headlines, it is our commercial sales that are our bread and butter. The success of those two ventures has been very pleasing, especially in a season like this north of here. “The carefully planned herd expansion into higher breeding numbers has enabled us to undertake these sales without sacrificing any quality in our 2020 Elite Production bull sale at home,” Tom added. This is great news for producers who have regularly attended Woonallee’s on-property sales at Furner knowing the Queensland and Victorian offerings consisted of bulls specially designed for those regions. There will be 95 bulls plus 25 females

of the renowned Woonallee quality offered at their 2020 sale on Thursday 13th February, commencing at 11am. Those who were fortunate to witness the $160,000 record sale of Woonallee Los Angeles will be pleased to know both he and his retained full brother, Woonallee Las Vegas are certainly leaving their mark at Woonallee. While

they both feature prominently in the outstanding group of traditional sons on offer in this sale, it is the group by Las Vegas that has particularly impressed Tom Baker, saying, ‘they have excelled for performance, muscling and docility.” A polled son of Las Vegas, with massive performance, style, softness

The Black Simmental and SimAngus drafts also offer evenness in type, while displaying outstanding length, performance and power. Woonallee Lieutenant, Lancaster Juggler, WLB Bounty Hunter and Woonallee Humdinger feature strongly as sires of the older group of black bulls, but it is the superb line-up of young bulls that the Baker family is particularly excited about. These include the first sons of MRL Missile, a sire Tom describes as, “The most consistent Black Simmental we have used and is a curve bending sire with huge performance and softness.” Hobbs Spice It Up also features in this line-up of young black bulls. While the 95 bulls will make up the dominant portion of the sale, the 25 females will be an exciting feature not to be overlooked. The quality of females Woonallee has offered in the past is second to none and these should be no exception. Being selected from 220 females, they comprise the top 11% of the female sale options. Prospective purchasers will be able to inspect the entire Woonallee sale offering during SA Beef Week on Tuesday 11th February when their sale teams will be on display. The full sale catalogue will be posted on the Woonallee website when available, plus keep an eye out for regular updates on Woonallee’s Facebook page.

ancaster Simmentals was excited to hold a very successful first Open Day in October. Fortunate to have fantastic guest speakers, the day included presentations by Hayley Robinson; Operations Manager for Meat Standards Australia (MSA) from MLA, along with Wade Shafer; Executive Vice-President and Luke Bowman; Director, Member events and International Relations from American Simmental. Hayley talked about understanding the MSA grading system and how to get the best value as MSA producers. Wade and Luke discussed indexes and how all breeders create our own indexes, by selecting animals using our own criteria. They then went on to elaborate on the API (All Purpose Index) and how it is a fantastic tool in any market, to select cattle based on economically relevant traits. The All Purpose index includes all the main profit drivers of beef production. The cost of feed and cost of animals go in cycles but the rankings of individual animals doesn’t really change and it is as relevant in Australia as it is in the US.

Lancaster Black Simmentals was the first Simmental stud in Australia to record their cattle on the American Simmental database. When they signed up, it already had over 10 million cattle recorded, a number which continues to grow exponentially each year. A large part of what inspired them to record their cattle in America, was the association’s multi-breed genetic database (which has since developed into International Genetic Solutions), encompassing many breeds of cattle. “It means that we can not only look at Angus cattle and Simmental cattle and their crosses, but also look at other breeds and see how they are progressing with their traits, all on the same database.” Says Tim Cartledge, “When we joined, we had no idea just how good it was going to be and how good it continues to be. Now we have second thoughts about using an animal not on the IGS system. It has greatly reduced the risk of using young, unproven animals.”

NAMPARA PASTORAL COMPANY

A

fter a challenging start to the season, the 65 bulls catalogued for sale on February 18th have come through with impressive raw data and above average Breedplan figures. Strength of bone, muscle, a quiet temperament and soft skin describe the bulls on offer with a range of options for those seeking heifer or cow bulls. Sires represented in this year’s sale include Texas Western Express H220, Texas Mount K2 and the ever reliable Atahua Freedom. A number of homebred sires are also represented in the draft including Nampara L133 who was part of our record-breaking sale in 2017. The Texas bulls have certainly injected some frame and punch in their calves combined with smoothness through the front end. They are big upstanding bulls that cover some ground. Once again, the Freedom sons don’t disappoint – their consistency, bone and depth is obvious throughout the draft. With a number of bulls by each sire, buyers can be assured of choice within each

sire line. Buyers will also note the group of used bulls who were specifically selected to join 700 commercial heifers destined for the Naracoorte and Mortlake Feature PTIC Females sales in January. With a focus on calving ease and lower birth weight, these bulls are well suited to heifer joining. Nampara have had a great year in the show ring in their debut year. Nampara Princess P86 led the team in winning Junior Champion Female at the Royal Adelaide Show where Angus was the feature breed. Princess then went on to be part of the Interbreed Junior Champion Pair. All Nampara genetics, Princess is by Nampara Liberty L21 ($85,000 record priced bull at our 2017 sale) and out of Nampara H19. Whilst success in the show ring is a fantastic thrill, there is no compromise on the basics at Nampara. The honest and commercially focussed approach ensures they:

* Concentrate on calving ease not birth weight • Only retain females who get in calf and calve unassisted by 2 years of age • Only retain females who get in calf every year • Do not foot trim or clip hair to hide faults • Rectify any problems with bulls purchased promptly y assessing structure, temperament and calving –ease and by using a limited number of sires over large mobs, Nampara can more accurately appraise the impact a sire is having within the herd. The joined heifer program also means that

Nampara are aiming to breed the type of heifer bulls that can be confidently used to mate heifers whilst at the same time not compromising on shape or frame.

The bulls will be on display at the following times and locations: • Victorian Beef Week, Mortlake Saleyards, Monday 3rd February • SA Beef Week, on property @ Nampara, Monday 10th February

Nampara Pastoral Co.

• Bull Sale, on property @ Nampara, Tuesday 18th February at 4.30pm • Or at any other time by appointment. With an emphasis on productivity and weight for age, Nampara is proud of the product they produce. For those looking to add more punch and constitution to their calves, the Nampara bulls are well worth a look. RAVEN GENETICS DESIGNED TO PERFORM WHEN CHALLENGED

T

he selection & breeding of market suitable genetics that have the ability to perform under challenging grazing environments has always been one of the key philosophies of the Raven herd.

The 2020 sale bulls have been rigorously selected out of the 2018 calf drop of bulls that started off more than double in numbers, with heavy emphasis placed on growth and carcase performance, temperament, structure and type. This lead group of bulls has grown out exceptionally well on what has been a below average rainfall year, and we contribute their performance and finish to our rotational grazing practices and the genetics in which we have selected and invested. The continual focus on positive fat is also a vital component to the easy finishing ability of our herd. These bulls have all been Sire Verified and DNA tested for client’s assurance, with the majority being Homozygous Polled with both Black and Red coat options. The Raven bulls continue to lead the Australian Limousin breed in performance with the catalogue bulls featuring strongly with the following important production and meat quality traits: • • • •

Top 10% 400 day weight Top 10% IMF% (marbling) Top 10% Milk (replacement females) Top 15% Scrotal (fertility)

These notable traits, with the addition of Limousins increased meat yield and muscle score, adds incredible value to any commercial beef enterprise which chooses to use Raven genetics. When joining to an Angus based cow herd the resulting progeny will be solid in colour, polled and suitable for the majority of the Australian grass-fed and grain-fed markets with the profit benefits to the producer being driven through growth heterosis and meat yield. The Raven herd will host its 7th Annual sale on February 27th 2020, featuring

an offering of bulls and a selection of handpicked females that are diverse in pedigree with a depth of breeding. Included will be 3 in 1 cow/ calf units with a number of these cows being matriarch stalwarts to our Raven herd, which sell with large 8 month old heifer calves at their side and PTIC to calve again. We also offer several hand selected unjoined heifers that are suitable to inject new pedigrees into herds or be potential 2020 show prospects. We would like to take the opportunity to thank all the specialists involved in our business, making it possible to obtain the rate of progression observed. We also appreciate the feedback we receive from clients, processors and agents and commend our clients on their precision management and diligent selection of Raven genetics, achieving fantastic

production results in what has been another challenging season for many. The sale will yet again be run by video auction, with sale bulls displayed on-site for your inspection. The sale will also be available for live bidding on Auctions Plus for those who can’t make it on sale day. Please don’t hesitate to contact us if you wish to discuss genetics to improve your business. Jason M: 0417 863 268

With all bulls fully Breedplan recorded from actual birth weight to 600 Day growth and carcase EBV’s. At the 2019 Adelaide Royal Show Kerlson Pines steers were among the major award winners, coming away with two Reserve Champion Carcase’s in the light weight and heavy domestic section, along with the Best Eating Quality Heavy Domestic Carcase, and third highest scoring steer overall. WEERAN AT THE FOREFRONT

T

It’s such an exciting time to be in the Seedstock Industry and breeding Angus cattle, with the evolution of genomics and the availability of high performance genetics from within Australia and overseas! The gains we have made in the Weeran herd combining these outstanding genetics and phenotype to match, is placing our herd in an excellent position to supply industry leading bulls and females. We are taking our selection decisions to the next level using the latest advancements in Angus Genotyping technology. It is early days for the beef industry with the introduction of Genomics, but the early results look incredibly interesting. At Weeran we are comprehensively testing the Autumn herd with a 50K test, along with all spring and autumn drop sale bulls for this forthcoming sale. It is just the beginning, and something we are excited to be pursuing. This is done through a hair or skin sample, and

will provide sire and/or full parent verification, with approximately 50,000 gene markers attributed to performance orientated growth and carcase factors. The results already are showing a large variation between embryo siblings, which makes selection and advancement of our breeding objectives far more accurate. Genomic technology is at the forefront of this industry moving forward and Genomic testing is one more tool for us to use to more accurately predict the future performance of our animals. Purchasing a bull is an investment and the more accurate the information is for selection, the better the investment! Weeran Angus are striving to provide the very best and latest information available to us as Seedstock Producers. The Annual Autumn Bull Sale on Tuesday 25th February, 2020 at 1pm will be featuring the final offering of Herdbook Embryo’s purchased from Millah Murrah. There will be sons of Ascot Hallmark, Millah Murrah Loch Up and Millah Murrah Lincoln. An

exciting three year program which has allowed us to sample the Millah Murrah program and run them alongside our own performance cattle. There are also many outstanding sons by Wattletop Franklin G188, Boonaroo Gravity G13, Paringa Judd M118, Weeran Hooper H20, JMB Traction, Ardcairnie F96, Clunie Range Legend L348 and Barwidgee JayW, who have worked very successfully in the Weeran Herd. Franklin is a trait leader for calving ease, growth, fertility and carcass traits. His sons sold very well in the 2019 Weeran spring sale. Gravity has well rounded performance with calving ease, moderate growth and excellent carcass qualities. Paringa Judd M118 has very good early growth with excellent scrotal and fantastic indexing with really rounded carcase figures. Clunie Range Legend L348 has been described by other breeders as being one of the thickest Angus bulls ever. He has great structure and is deep and wide standing. Hooper constantly impresses and is such a complete sire who excels in calving ease, balanced growth and excellent carcase quality

with an exemplary temperament. Three of his sons were equal top price at the recent spring sale. We have completed an extensive Embryo program with Rob Pashen of AA Genetics. We have a bank of embryo’s from the females purchased at Dispersal sales over the last two years. Namely, Coolana, Witherswood, Anvil and Wattletop. PERFECTLY SELECTED SIRES AT YERWAL ESTATE The 2020 line of sale bulls certainly validates the selection of stud sires that we purchased in 2017. We have a fantastic line of sound, docile, well muscled sires that should meet the needs of cattle producers with the highest of standards. traditional. Yerwal Estate Charo N180 is pictured. She is the daughter of Yerwal Estate Charo J059 and was the SA Junior Heifer Expo Junior Champion Heifer in 2018, Senior Champion Heifer in 2019 and the Junior Champion Simmental Heifer at the 2019 Royal Adelaide Show.

The next main group are by a Connealy Capitalist purchased from Spry’s Angus. They have great calving ease, growth and shape. They have extra muscle and hindquarter, are docile and phenotypically hard to fault.

RIGHT: To enter a carcase competition, a few of your best steers are chosen, but when a hundred steers are sent to be killed for the high-end export market, and every carcase is accepted with an average of 64% carcase weight. This is true proof of what the Granite Ridge sired cattle can do.

GRANITE RIDGE – LOOKING TO THE FUTURE diversification we purchased the Granite Ridge Angus Stud as a going concern in June 2019 and have been very pleased with our acquisition.

O

ur family has built and operates a large broiler chicken growing complex at Murray Bridge.

The broiler chicken industry exists and flourishes, despite low unit margins, due to its efficiency in converting kilos of feed to kilos of meat in as short a time as possible and it does this by providing the right climatic environment for the birds comfort including unlimited access to feed and water.

During our time in chickens we have observed a large improvement in feed efficiency conversion rates from 1.8 : 1 and above to current day 1.6’s : 1 and below with chicken processing weights reached in around 10 percent less time as well. These large gains in productivity are all attributable to selective breeding for the right growth traits/genetics over time. As a sideline to chickens we also run some beef cattle on a separate property at Murray Bridge and as a logical extension to further business

Our new herd contains many quality females of outstanding phenotype with good growth potential and we look forward to the challenge of selecting the right sires to suit and provide many quality bulls for your selection in future sales. Our future focus will remain on exceptional growth potential, feed efficiency, excellent fertility, carcass weight/quality and structural correctness in sire selection and are committed to maintaining the high calibre standard of Sires that Granite Ridge is known for. Our 2020 sale bulls are stacking up with some powerful sire prospects. We have many sires featured in the group and we believe that the high standard and consistency of the team is due to the outstanding maternal power in the Granite Ridge cow herd. Some of the sires featured this year include: Ayrvale

Jagger, whose sons have sold well in previous sales, as did the Rennylea K447, whose sons are long, smoothsided and correct. MM Doc has some power-house bulls with tremendous growth and sire appeal, as does Granite Ridge Jurassic with their depth

and thickness. Each one of these sires is of sound phenotype, with good legs and feet. They all have high growth and carcase weight which equates to more dollars in your pocket sooner. We look forward to seeing you around the sale yard at our open day on Monday the 10th of February and sale day, Friday the 14th of February.

CATTLE PREGNANCY SCANNING To my clients that I have been Pregnancy Scanning cattle for and any other cattle producers, here is some detail on the Cattle Pregnancy Scanning Service that I provide. Greg Fitzgerald

I

have been pregnancy scaanning cattle for 19 years.

I have recently upgraded my Cattle Pregnany Scanning equipment, having previously used three other types of ultrasounds over the years. The new machine is a BCF Easiscan with a Curve bottom to the probe, rather than a straight linear probe that I have been using up until now. The benefit of the new technology is that it creates a wider field of view with greater depth of scan than other linear probes. There is also a selection of 4 range settings that I didn’t have before, which can be altered depending on the age of pregnancies within the mob of cattle. Due to the improved image, Fetal Ageing pregnancies to a more mature age is possible. Advantages of WELL PERFORMED Cattle Pregnancy Scanning compared to Manual Palpation:

Profitable Livestock

- Pregnancy Scanning is accurate to a minimum of 35 days. Early pregnancy diagnosis allows empties to be sold quickly. Re-joining empties to either keep or sell as pregnant females may be a viable alternative for some enterprises. - Pregnancy Scanning is generally gentler on cows and heifers. - The usual flow rate is between 70 and 100 cows per hour. The Easiscan unit I am using is a back pack mounted ultra sound with a monocular monitor mounted on my hat, which makes it functional for all types of cattle yards, races and crushes. Fetal Ageing to break herds into calving groups. - For a tighter mating the herd can be broken up into 2 or 3 week calving groups. This is best done prior to 90 days from joining and is useful for feed management, monitoring cows for grass tetany in peak lactation and calving down heifers. - In Artificial Insemination programs there will be a difference of 3 weeks between the AI and back up pregnancies. - Where there has been a long joining maybe because of bull break down and the mating has been backed up. COST – In / Out of calf diagnosis $3- plus gst - In / Out of calf and Fetal Age $4 plus gst - Travelling .70c / km plus gst, shared between jobs

BOUTIQUE OPERATION AT WRATTENBULLIE

W

rattenbullie Stud is a family operation run by Rod, Gayle, Brad and Alana Davies on 418 hectares of prime grazing land in the Wrattonbully District. On Tuesday, February 11,

Wrattenbullie will have 10 bulls to sell privately at the Upper South East Field Days. “We have gone a full circle really,” Rod said. “After 20 years of selling at the Diamond Bull Sale, we have gone back to selling privately.” Wrattenbullie Kingston K46 is a home bred sire that has five sons in the 2020 sale with three sons of Elite L53 also part of the offering. Wrattenbullie also purchased two new sires in 2019 to continue their breeding program – Grathlyn Nebraska, a Valma Odyssey son, and Yalgoo Ninja, a Yalgoo Breakout son out of a Truss daughter. A small stud, Wrattenbullie was established thanks to a genuine love for cattle and has developed into a passion to breed high performing Poll Hereford cattle. The breeding herd consists of 50 cows selected on structure, fertility and mothering ability. Foundation females were purchased from Nioka, Goonamurra, Neilpo and Allendale studs and Wrattenbullie has been performance recording with breedplan since the early 1990s and with genomic testing improving the accuracy of the data they feel they are playing a role producing bulls with traits the commercial cattle men want. “It’s simple really, we are trying to breed good, sound bulls,” Rod said. “Our focus is producing muscle and structure that are stable for the commercial industry.” AI and embryo transfers are an important tool for their breeding programs enabling us to source the genetics they desire.

COPE RED ANGUS Cope Red Angus bulls will be exhibited for private sale as part of the Victorian Beef Week at Mount Gambier Show Grounds on Tuesday 4th February. On farm “window shopping” is always most welcome by appointment. We have 50 years’ involvement in breeding beef cattle. The cornerstone of our genetic progress has been accurate data on growth, fertility and other characteristics. With the support of an experienced statistician this “own” data base is regularly updated for use in selection. We use only Cope Red Angus bulls in our own commercial herd. We have learned from this experience the importance of breeding a consistent type of cattle that can thrive and be profitable in a sustainable grass fed grazing system. THE RED ANGUS BREED

T

extbooks imply the only difference between Red and Black Angus is a recessive gene for coat colour. Stock people who have worked with the two breeds know different! We are not saying one breed is better than the other, just that they are very different breeds in many respects. Perhaps the most striking feature of Red Angus is their gentle docile nature and how easy they are to work with, especially in the yards. The females are renowned for their longevity and very impressive mothering qualities. Red Angus has the ability to adapt to a wide range of climatic conditions. As with all Angus cattle, Red Angus have excellent carcase characteristics.

performance information is recorded with the highest possible accuracy and has definitely been the cornerstone of genetic progress in the herd. In terms of constitution our cattle must be able to easily put on a covering of fat to get them through tough times in the paddock. One of the sure thing with cattle breeding is that in the long run the best converters will win. In terms of structure we pay a lot of attention to free movement and sound feet. Cope Red Angus is a full member of the Red Angus Society of Australia under the “COP” herd identifier (www.redangus.org.au).

COPE RED ANGUS

O

ur breeding philosophy at Cope Red Angus has been to limit the characteristics we aim to improve. Selection on too many things invariably leads to little gain in anything. We have not needed to pay too much attention to temperament, fertility, calving ease or mothering ability because the breed in general is strong in these characteristics. Of course we do “cull from the bottom” any females which fail to get into calf or do not calve easily. “Selection from the top” has been on growth, constitution and structural balance which includes sound feet. Over the years our foundation AI sires have all ranked amongst the top few percent of Breedplan growth performers to weaning and yearling ages. We maintain our own long-term data bank for growth, fertility and other production characteristics of the stud herd across generations; with regular updating of breeding values. This in-house

COMMERCIALLY FOCUSED CATTLE

T

he Limek Limousin stud of today continues to strive to breed the best commercially focussed cattle for the Southern Australia environment. It is owned and run by the Modra family at a property South of Bordertown, South Australia. They have built on this goal over the 30 years that they have been in the stud business. Limek Limousin continues to introduce new blood lines from various respected studs around Australia in order to diversify their herd genetics. They also use some of the best artificial insemination sires from overseas and Australia to help bring new genetics and better traits into the expanding herd. This year has seen the completion of several artificial insemination programs with sires from all over Australia and from Canada and the United states. They also secured a new herd sire from Morrisvale Limousin’s in WA. The Modra family’s focus over the last few years has been on growth and early maturing traits whilst ensuring continued work on the Limek stud core traits of docility, high yield and easy doing Limousin cattle. This is backed up by extensive recording of multiple weight and fertility traits to produce Estimated Breeding Values (EBVs) along with ultra sound scanning to give their clients an increased understanding of the cattle muscle and fat traits.

The Modra family welcome the ongoing work conducted by Meat and Livestock Australia (MLA) into objective measurement technology. This exciting development will pave the way for scientific measurements of saleable meat yield, giving producers a fairer return at the abattoir for the product they produce. Limousin cattle are market leaders in yield and carcase traits and their incorporation into breeding programs now will see the producer well rewarded as this technology is implemented in the years ahead.

INSURING BEEF CATTLE IN AUSTRALIA

O

ABOVE: At MGA, we have local know-how, with national protection.

The beef cattle industry makes an important contribution to the Australian economy. In 2015–16 it accounted for about 23 per cent ($13.1 billion) of the total gross value of farm production and 22 per cent of the total value of farm export income. Around 57 per cent of all Australian farms carry beef cattle, making this the most common agricultural activity in Australia. Beef cattle farms are an important part of the rural economy in almost all regions of Australia. It’s an industry that requires quite specific insurance covers to enhance the prospects of maintaining a profitable business.

of the hammer at sales • Insured agreed value right from the fall of the hammer at sales • Cover from private sales as well • Death due to destruction on humane grounds • Death caused by accident during transportation Exclusions can apply and may include (but not limited to) : • Genetic infertility • Veterinary costs or surgical costs, unless agreed upon with the insurer and the procedure performed to preserve the life of the animal. • Certain causes of death, including such things as Foot and Mouth disease or Footrot to name a few.

There are generally two types of insurance cover that can be obtained for your cattle, one being a stud stock policy that can enable you to cover your stud bulls and heifers against: • Death due to an accident • Death due to an illness or disease • Loss of use due to an accident (bulls) • Loss of use due to an illness (bulls) This type of cover may also include • Automatic cover, right from the fall

Other covers that may be needed, such as transit insurance, that can either be added to an existing farm policy or taken as a separate cover, may be more extensive than that provided under the Stud livestock policies. The alternative to the stud stock cover (above) or in addition, to cover the entire herd is the livestock cover provided under most farm insurance policies. This section of the farm policy may be able to extend to also cover your working dogs for specific events. Each policy will vary in both their cover and exclusions but in general you should look for a policy that covers the following: • Death of livestock caused by fire, lightning, explosion, earthquake or malicious damage • Death of livestock caused by impact by any vehicle or aircraft • Theft of livestock up to an agreed sum insured (this may be less than your total livestock sum insured) • Destruction, certified by a veterinarian, for humane reasons, following an insured event (Eg: fire) Some of the better policies will automatically increase the insured sum insured by 30% during the three months of high fire danger, at no extra cost. It is wise to check insurance cover for public liability, to ensure that you (the owner of the livestock) are covered should the stock escape and become involved in a collision. As always, it’s best to speak to your local insurance broker, who will be able to search the available marketplace for the insurance covers that suit your individual requirements. TO TEST OR NOT TO TEST BULLS

T

hat is the question we get asked a lot around this time of the year. For those farmers who have had trouble with broken down bulls in the previous year it is a fairly easy decision to put your bulls under the microscope before you use them again in the upcoming mating period. Another question you need to ask yourself is “What tests and what vaccinations were done to the new bulls coming onto the farm this year?” Testing pre sale is not a standard procedure as many bull buyers will find out when they follow up on a bull failure. Some studs are happy enough to just do a physical examination on the bulls which may or may not include scrotal circumference, feet etc. A lot of sale bulls aren’t examined by veterinarians so the idea of a vet check prior to sale is a bit of a misnomer. We would recommend all bulls have a Veterinary Bull Breeding Soundness Exam done prior to sale or prior to mating. This includes measuring scrotal circumference, palpation of internal reproductive organs and examination of external reproductive organs such as the prepuce and penis. Following this it is recommend that the bull’s semen be examined using a microscope and semen sent off to a morphologist to examine the individual sperm under a high powered DIC microscope. The recommendation for a fertile bull is greater than 70% normal sperm and greater than 70% progressively motile sperm under the microscope in the field. Less than these values can lead to poor fertility and poor pregnancy rates. Another issue we see commonly is bulls with poor feet conformation. It’s especially important to closely examine your potential purchases feet so as to not introduce poor foot conformation into your breeding herd and minimise the amount of bull breakdowns due to lameness issues.

• Physical examination for breeding soundness of bulls • On farm semen testing • BVD (Pestivirus) testing and advice • Semen Morphology assessment • Reproductive disease advice and testing 314 Commercial St West, Mount Gambier Phone 08 8725 5855 35

The work is planned around the weather and when inclement weather occurs cattle work is deferred incurring cost and inconvenience or is done in the rain causing unsettled beasts and unnecessary health risks.
