The Cats dropped a shocker to 2020 wooden spooner Adelaide last Saturday afternoon and just a few hours later, Brisbane was well beaten at home by Sydney, which won just five games last year.

It makes the stakes at GMHBA Stadium on Friday night absolutely enormous.

One of the genuine 2020 flag fancies will be 0-2 and you have to go back to North Melbourne in 1999 to find a premiership team that started the season with two straight defeats.

The Lions were brought undone by a lack of pressure and intensity.

Geelong didn’t seem to be any quicker than last year, despite the addition of former Hawthorn speedster Isaac Smith, and was taken apart in the first half by the relentless Crows, whose pressure game at times resembled that of Richmond in last year’s Grand Final.

than a side that will either just make or miss the top eight.

The Blues are likely in the same boat, which is what makes this clash so appetising.

It could be an ‘eight-point game’ before the end of March.

In 2020, the Swans and the Crows finished in the bottom of the ladder. So too did Hawthorn, which looked gone for all money when it trailed arch enemy Essendon at

Marvel Stadium by 40 points close to half-time.

An hour or so later, the Hawks had won by one point in a remarkable game, and which added to the feel-good vibe for much of round one.

Indeed, save for a serious knee injury to rising Gold Coast star Matt Rowell, there was much to enjoy from having the footy back.

Crowds returned to games in Victoria and both the MCG on Thursday and Friday night and Marvel Stadium on Saturday night were close to their temporary 50 per cent capacity.

The trains were packed, the nearby pubs and restaurants were heaving and, as many commentators noted, a large part of the city’s soul was restored.

And the TV audiences enjoyed having the footy back.

More than 3.8 million viewers across Australia watched the four free-to-air games on Seven, while Fox Footy’s coverage of the Richmond-Carlton opener was watched by 243,000 people.

And the footy was entertaining.

The new ‘stand’ rule allowed for some free-flowing football out of defence and led to greater scoring in some instances, while after its hasty introduction just 24 hours before the start of the season, the new injury substitute was used eight times.

Whether clubs chose to ‘bend the rules’ won’t be known until this weekend, if and when any of those injured players are somehow cleared to play.

NAB AFL Rising Star ERROL GULDEN SYDNEY SWANS

H

is name might be decidedly old school, as though he played on the half-forward flank for the old South Melbourne, but make no mistake, Errol Gulden represents what is shaping as an exciting future for Sydney.

The 18-year-old collected the first NAB AFL Rising Star nomination for 2021 after a superb debut game, with 19 disposals, 10 marks and three goals in the 31-point upset of Brisbane at the Gabba last Saturday night.

There are suggestions the smooth-moving, 176cm half-forward is already the best kick at the club.

He was the No. 32 selection at last year’s NAB AFL Draft and the Swans were surprised, and ultimately delighted, that no clubs chose to bid on the graduate from their Academy.

With Logan McDonald (also three goals) and Braeden Campbell also impressing in their debut games, there is every chance that this year’s Rising Star class might have a distinctively red and white flavour.

SAINTS TO PAY TRIBUTE TO ‘SPUD’

B

efore coronavirus came along and tipped everything on its head, mental health had become an issue that was front and centre for everyone in the game.

Recognising this, the AFL appointed Dr Kate Hall as the head of mental health and wellbeing and Dr Ranjit Menon as its chief psychiatrist and they are already leaving their mark, especially in the aftermath of last season, which took a huge toll on so many in the industry.

But the focus on mental health in footy will be especially highlighted at Marvel Stadium on Saturday night when St Kilda partners with Movember to honour its beloved former captain Danny Frawley, with the game against Melbourne to be known as “Spud’s Game: Time 2 Talk”.

The mental health issues that Frawley battled for many years were a contributing factor to his death in a car accident in September, 2019.

The Saints had already partnered with the Victorian and Federal governments to announce the Danny Frawley Centre for Health and Wellbeing at the club’s RSEA Park headquarters, which will combine a host of facilities, services and programs to support the physical and mental health of St Kilda people and the community alike.

But Saturday night’s game is the first played by the Saints in front of their home supporters and represents the first and best opportunity to say goodbye, while also placing a spotlight on mental health issues in the community and encouraging those who feel they may be affected to reach out to seek support.

Almost half of Australians will experience a mental illness at some point in their life and men, in particular, need to do a better job at talking about their feelings.

In Australia, three out of every four suicides are men.

Having strong social connections, and talking more, can help to protect against anxiety, depression and even suicide.

For the Frawley family, it will be an emotional night, but also, at last, a chance for them to offer their thanks for the outpouring of love and support that came their way after his passing.

There were plans to do so last year, but COVID-19 put an end to that.

“It has given our family some solace to know we’re not the only ones who miss him. He was loved so deeply and widely,” said his daughter Chelsea, who works for the Saints in a marketing role.

Among those who will be at the game to lend their support will be Frawley’s former teammates Robert Harvey, Stewart Loewe and Tony Lockett, who will make the trip from New South Wales, as well as his close friend, former Melbourne champion Garry Lyon.

All funds raised during the game, including through the sale of special-edition Spud’s Game caps and T-shirts will support mental health programs through the Danny Frawley Centre for Health and Wellbeing and Movember’s Ahead of the Game.

he NSW Australian Football History Society has joined with the Sydney Cricket Ground Trust to commemorate the first Australian Football matches at the SCG in 1881.

The Trust will hold a special event on the weekend of August 6-8 to recognise the first intercolonial match played on the SCG on August 6, 1881.

It will coincide with a Sydney Swans home game against St Kilda and include the major stakeholders in the game in NSW. THERE’S A BUZZ ABOUT THE BLUES While Carlton could not quite get the job done against the reigning champs in the opening round, there is genuine excitement and optimism in the Blues camp.

T

he text from a Carlton mate came back quickly on Friday morning after the season-opener in response to a suggestion the Blues showed genuine promise the night before against Richmond at the MCG. “Blues need to be good, not ‘going to be good’ – we’re sick of waiting,” it read.

It is a sentiment widely felt by all those who bleed navy Blue – players, coaches and officials, the nearly 80,000 members and the hundreds of thousands of other rusted-on Carlton types.

The Blues are in the final throes of what has been a long, slow and meticulous rebuild.

No short cuts, no selling of the farm for a superstar recruit or slavishly chasing a big-name coach. It’s all about the process at Ikon Park.

The margin against the Tigers was 25 points, not much different to the 27-point average winning margin Richmond had enjoyed against the Blues in the previous six season-opening encounters.

So while the frustration felt by Carlton people as they woke up last Friday morning was palpable, to neutral observers, this one looked and felt different.

There were large patches of the game when the Blues were in control.

When the Tigers took a three-goal lead in the final term, the Blues hit back to get within five points.

For the first time in a long time, the optimism around Carlton seems genuine.

C

ain Liddle is a football person in that he played four games for Geelong and was later an assistant coach in what is now the NAB League.

But his professional background is in business and before joining the Blues as chief executive, he held key senior commercial roles at Richmond and agrees there are parallels between the Tigers of the middle of the last decade and the Carlton he joined in late 2017.

“They’re different clubs, but the similarities were that they were big clubs that hadn’t had success for a while and had maybe lost the ability to engage with their supporters,” he told the AFL Record.

“At Richmond, even though they weren’t winning, membership numbers were increasing significantly each year, like they are now at Carlton.

“It confirms what we’ve known, that 80 per cent of people become members so that they can feel part of the footy club and contribute to the footy club.”

In a way, the success of Richmond has made Carlton an easier sell.

They have long been comparable clubs, marginally behind Collingwood in the Victorian pecking order, but with a rich history and an enormous supporter base.

There was great excitement and a touch of romance about the drought-breaking Tiger premiership in 2017, and there is a similar buzz surrounding the Blues, whose last flag came in 1995.

For middle-aged football supporters who remember all those powerful Carlton teams under Alex Jesaulenko and David Parkin with, as the club song says, “all the champions they like to send us”, it is hard to believe it is a quarter of a century since the Blues last won a flag.

There have been a few reboots since then, the last of which came at the end of 2015.

With former club champion Stephen Silvagni taking the playing list apart and putting it back together again and Brendon Bolton installed as coach with the clear brief to play the kids, the work started once again.

The results weren’t obvious immediately – 14th in 2016, 16th in 2017 and 18th in 2018.

A slow start yet again in 2019 cost Bolton his job. Silvagni was gone by the end of the season as well.

It puts the Blues in the unusual position in that two of the key architects of the plan to lift the club out of the doldrums and, in particular, to take the slow and measured path forward, are no longer there.

“He (Bolton) raised the standards and challenged a lot of us. He did the really hard work,” said skipper Patrick Cripps, who admitted the difficulty in talking about the previous coach, when at the same time being heavily invested in David Teague, his replacement.

“He’s someone I think if you asked people, they’d like to thank him individually because he set some standards for the club,” he said.

“Obviously it didn’t work out for him, but I had a great relationship with him and still do. It’s the way the industry works.”

How far the Blues progress in the next few seasons will obviously be the final measure of Silvagni’s time as list manager.

“We attacked three national drafts and Steve set that up,” Carlton’s general manager of football Brad Lloyd said.

“He did that really well and now Nick Austin (Silvagni’s replacement as list manager) has taken that and tried to run with it. “‘Bolts’ and Steve have played really big parts in getting the club to where it is now and we’re trying to build on that.”

Carlton’s mission since 2016 has been to become a destination club.

Lloyd, a former Hawthorn player, player manager and Fremantle list manager, headed there in 2018.

But the great get was longtime Hawthorn fitness coach Andrew Russell, a key off-field component of the Hawks team that won four premierships between 2008 and 2015.

The story goes that the Blues were sniffing around in the hope that perhaps one of his offsiders would come to the club, but painted enough of a picture that Russell decided to come on board himself.

His brilliant record, which also includes flags at Essendon and Port Adelaide before he joined the Hawks, has helped make Carlton an attractive place to play footy.

“He’s been sensational to work with,” Lloyd said. “He builds strong connections with the players and

staff and drives them to improve themselves and, because of his experience and his record is so strong, he’s just well-trusted.

“He just loves trying to get the best out of individuals and he’s done that wherever he’s been.”

f there was a knock on Bolton, it was that the Blues were too defensive.

Teague stepped in as the interim senior coach and quickly won over enough people to win the job on a permanent basis.

From the get-go, he had the Blues playing with more flair and verve, a bit more on instinct and a bit less on structure. They were bold and brave against the Tigers last week and had them worried.

Teague’s impact on the playing group was immediate and has been profound.

“He has this high football intelligence in how he sees the game and strong opinions in how he wants the team to play,” Lloyd said.

“He’s really impressive and has a strong handle on all aspects of the football department, he’s done that really well and he’s really strong on belonging and making sure everyone is included.

“He’s culturally proactive in where we’re trying to go. He’s a really good fit.”

“We’re not going to hide from the fact that we want to play finals footy, but as I’ve said all summer, words are cheap.”

Like Brendon Gale, his former boss at Richmond, Liddle delivered a strategic plan within 12 months of starting in the chief executive’s role.

The Blues have already met one key deliverable, which is to be debt free, and they are tracking nicely down the path towards several others. But No. 1 on the list is to win more premierships.

Football is the core business and success on the field will lead to Carlton achieving success in every other endeavour it chooses.

“If you combine all the key metrics, no club in the AFL has the growth potential of Carlton,” he boldly declared.

But he hears the murmurings of impatience among the supporters.

They will only get louder if the Blues don’t get over Collingwood on Thursday night.

“The expectations are growing as our capabilities are improving,” he said.

“We embrace that and that’s exciting.”

ANSWER MAN Back in 2013 in Launceston, I remember two of the three field umpires in the Hawthorn-Bulldogs match were former senior players – Jordan Bannister (Essendon and Carlton) and Leigh Fisher (St Kilda).

Has there ever been a round when more than two ex-players officiated as umpires?

with COL HUTCHINSON u Ted Tyson had an outstanding goalkicking record for West Perth in the WAFL. In 228 appearances from 1930-45, Tyson kicked 1196 goals at an average of 5.2 a game, including more than 100 in a season six times.

One of Tyson’s finest moments came in round 20, 1938, at Leederville Oval when West Perth hosted Swan Districts.

The Cardinals, as they were then known, were last on the ladder, while Swans needed a win to have a chance of making the final four.

KEN BEAVIS, BURNIE, TAS CH: In round three of 1907, history was made when all four games were controlled by former League players. At the Brunswick Street Oval, former Saint Jimmy Smith blew the whistle when Fitzroy hosted Geelong. The man in white at the Junction Oval when St Kilda met Essendon was Bob Boyle, who had previously played for the Blues.

At the Lake Oval, another former Carlton man, Bill McNamara, was in charge of the Bloods-Magpies contest. The umpire at the MCG for the Melbourne-Carlton clash was ex-Demon Bert Wregg. He could not be accused of bias, as the Blues won by 39 points. There have been three other cases of as many as four former players umpiring on the same day – round 14, 1908, round eight, 1909, and round six, 1910. Leigh Fisher, who has

umpired more games than any other former player, is the 43rd person to participate in both capacities. One of the most unusual cases occurred in late July, 1918, at the Junction Oval. Arthur Norden umpired the first half of the St Kilda-Collingwood match, but could not continue, due to

In a phenomenal performance, Tyson was responsible for most of West Perth’s score, kicking 17.5 of the team’s 18.7.

According to The West Australian, Tyson kicked some “extraordinarily difficult goals”.

With the Cardinals leading at the final break, Tyson added steadily to his tally, but Swans kicked 11 goals for the quarter to win by eight points and jump to third on the ladder.

Tyson, 17 goals in a losing team, amazing!

Tyson kicked 126 goals for the season to lead the WAFL goalkicking, despite his team winning only three games.

u There have been calls over the years to award Jack Macrae Fantasy pig status due to the way he fills the stat sheet. Whether it is linking up for an easy +6 (mark/kick) or laying tackles, it was all on display in round one with 35 disposals, seven marks and seven tackles for 135 Fantasy points. While many coaches were put off by picking Bulldogs due to their stacked midfield, it doesn’t seem to be a worry and the best news, at least from what we saw in round one, is that Macrae is playing inside rather than on the wing where points don’t flow as freely.

u Only one per cent of the competition enjoyed having Andrew McGrath (141), who was the top scorer of the round. Dustin Martin (131) was doing ‘Dusty’ things, but it was Jaidyn Stephenson (128) who offered some of the best mid-priced value of all available forwards. New midfield roles for Callum Mills (121) and Rory Laird (119) provided fantastic first-up scores for their owners, but the top available defender was Sun Jack Bowes (135), who took 14 marks.

u Not many would have backed the Swans-Crows quinella on the opening round of the season, but here we are, with a juicier than anticipated match-up as Sydney returns to the SCG for the first time in 240 days. The Swans’ kids are better than advertised and they’ve found two more, with first-gamers Logan McDonald and Errol Gulden – the round one NAB Rising Star nominee – both kicking three goals in the 31-point upset of Brisbane at the Gabba. Lance Franklin will be back for the first time since round 23, 2019, a sight that will gladden not just Swans fans, but all footy lovers. Adelaide’s pressure game against Geelong

was relentless. They made the Cats look slow, forced them into error and destroyed them on the rebound. Taylor Walker reaped the benefits of some superb delivery further up the ground to finish with five goals. It will be fascinating to see whether both young teams can put last week’s excitement behind them, settle down and get back to work. u One of the storylines of the off-season was

the exodus of talent out the door at Essendon. It was headlined by Joe Daniher, but Bomber fans would have been equally displeased to lose the talented Orazio Fantasia and the pain would have been magnified by his four-goal haul in his debut game for the Power last week. Port Adelaide’s recruiting was spot-on at the end of last season and both Fantasia and Aliir Aliir, who dominated as an intercepting key defender, filled specific needs. The Power are hunting a premiership this season and, as expected, won comfortably against North Melbourne and should be too

accomplished here for Essendon, which is coming off a shattering one-point loss to Hawthorn. The Bombers led by 40 points at one stage late in the second quarter, but were sat back on their heels in the third term as the Hawks came surging back.

There appeared to be no Plan B or C to get the game back on their terms and that was against a likely bottom-six team. Playing away against one of the premiership favourites, Essendon simply does not have the weapons to keep this one close.

The schedule makers have gifted Port the chance to get out of the blocks quickly in 2021 and it will take full advantage.

Beware, it’s no Swansong just yet Sydney’s upset win over Brisbane in the opening round was just as important for off-field success as it was for the four points.

I

n an illuminating article that appeared in the Sydney Morning Herald last weekend, journalist Andrew Wu spoke to Sydney president Andrew Pridham and chief executive Tom Harley as they offered what was virtually a state of play about the club.

These are challenging times for the Swans. They’ve missed the finals the past two seasons – their longest time out of September action since the mid-1990s when, if not for football legend Ron Barassi being parachuted into the club as coach, their very existence in the AFL was under threat.

There is no chance of that happening now of course, but the Swans are in the midst of a fight, both to start rising up the ladder once more and to remain at the forefront of relevance and importance in their home city.

And they’re as financially hobbled as they have been for some time.

As Wu reported, they lost $520,000 in 2019.

Last year, as the global pandemic brought the game to its knees, the Swans posted a $6m loss, despite reducing their operating expenses by 38 per cent, and ended the year with a $1.5m loan from the AFL. They had more than 61,000 members in 2019, with the Lance Franklin effect still in full swing.

This year, they’re hoping for 50,000 members, but so far have attracted a little more than 40,000.

Help might be on the way.

Franklin, who didn’t play at all last season, got through half a reserves practice game last Sunday and will be back for Saturday afternoon’s game against Adelaide.

It would be a major surprise if his picture isn’t plastered across the back page of the Sydney newspapers and TV sports news bulletins all week.

Franklin puts bums on seats in the first place and helps the Swans win. And that’s when those who are sitting on the fence might decide to turn their support of the club into a membership.

The biggest thing going for the Swans might be their form.

If Adelaide’s win over Geelong was the biggest upset last weekend, then Sydney heading to the Gabba and upending the highly-fancied Brisbane by 31 points was close behind, certainly in the eyes of most observers.

But talk to people at the Swans and they’ll talk up their kids at every opportunity.

Sydney won just five games last year, but among them were wins over the GWS Giants (in which the Giants kicked just three goals, all from dubious free kicks) and

Melbourne, which was seeking a place in the finals. Both those wins were powered by the kids and it was the same last Saturday night.

Errol Gulden and Logan McDonald kicked three goals each on debut.

It has taken Gulden precisely one AFL game to establish himself as one of the best kicks in the competition and he is the first NAB AFL Rising Star nominee for 2021.

Braeden Campbell was the other debutant for the Swans, while three others had played 10 games or fewer.

Four more had played no more than 50 games.

The ease of the win over the Lions – the Swans kicked nine goals to two in a scintillating third term – suggests that contrary to what was thought only a week ago, they are in the finals mix.

This would be a good thing, not just for Sydney’s bottom line, which has been hemorrhaging red ink, but will be a boost for both the club and the AFL in the nation’s most competitive sporting and media market.

AFL arch enemy Peter V’Landys has flexed the NRL’s considerable muscle, a long overdue move, so the Swans need success to keep our game as highly visible as possible.

They seem to be going about things in the best possible way.
