And it is Richmond, yes Richmond, which might yet miss out after a 10-point loss to Gold Coast last week at Marvel Stadium in what was one of the most stunning upsets, not just of this season, but of recent times.

The Tigers, winners of three of the past four premierships, came into the game banged up and on the back of a miserable outing the week before against St Kilda in which they kicked just two goals.

Coach Damien Hardwick spent the week reminding his players of the importance of the Gold Coast game, but except for brief patches here and there, they didn’t respond.

Most disappointing was that poor kicking by the Suns left the door slightly ajar for the Tigers.

Indeed, they hit the front briefly in the final term only for Gold Coast to respond with the last two majors of the game to close out a famous win.

The Tigers thought they’d be knocked out of the eight after their loss to the Saints the week before but there were no takers.

No such luck last week and a stirring nine-point win to the u The AFL has had to negotiate its way through another fixturing nightmare in recent weeks, but in true entertainment style, the show has gone on.

How the League has managed to duck and weave through the latest COVID lockdowns in New South Wales, Queensland and Western Australia is a minor miracle.

Last week there were concerns about the Brisbane

GWS Giants over ladder-leading Melbourne at the MCG on Saturday elevated them into the eight at Richmond’s expense.

The Giants led for most of the day in the frigid conditions, held the Demons to just 7.13 and withstood a furious onslaught from Melbourne in the final quarter.

With skipper Stephen Coniglio and spearhead Jesse Hogan set to return, they might be difficult to remove for the rest of the season.

Sydney’s 92-point thrashing of West Coast at GMHBA Stadium cemented the Swans’ place in the top eight.

It was their most impressive performance for several weeks and puts to bed, for now, talk that they were the team most likely to be dislodged from the eight.

That team might now be the Eagles, who in two games this Lions entering South Australia to take on Adelaide, which meant at one stage all 18 clubs were based in Victoria.

Those of us living in Victoria almost have to pinch ourselves when we cast our minds back to this time last year when the state was just starting a four-month lockdown.

The Lions were eventually cleared to travel to Adelaide which meant the Crows cut short their

midweek Melbourne sabbatical to play hosts at Adelaide Oval.

It was the only game played outside Victoria and was almost a throwback to the old VFL days when six matches were played in Melbourne and Geelong every Saturday afternoon.

Of course, the League now has the luxury of spreading games across four days and it controls its own venue at Marvel Stadium.

The MCG, which had been idle

during Victoria’s most recent lockdown in June, hosted three games and we even saw a game played at GMHBA Stadium not featuring Geelong.

As we went to print, there were still some gaps in this week’s fixture. But, with apologies to the recently departed US defence secretary Donald Rumsfeld, there are plenty of “known knowns” about this season – and one of them is the footy will continue.

ONE WEEK at a TIME year at Geelong have kicked 8.17 and conceded 39.20. That’s a combined losing margin of 189 points.

The list analysts might say West Coast’s top 10 players are the best of any in the competition.

If that’s the case, then the bottom 10 must be the most ordinary, but what is more likely is that the Eagles are mentally fragile and have a game-plan that is too easily picked apart.

West Coast has several winnable games to come, but without a massive form reversal and a jolt of confidence, it is hard to see it contending for the flag.

Just two games separate the Eagles in seventh and St Kilda in 13th.

Fremantle could be in the eight by now, but didn’t help its cause by kicking 8.16 in its 16-point loss to Carlton.

The Dockers were also a tad unlucky; they had to play their ‘home’ game at the MCG against the Blues because of COVID restrictions in Western Australia and might well have taken the points had they played at Optus Stadium.

hunt – just – although the Saints’ paltry percentage of 83.7 means they are effectively a further game back.

Melbourne’s loss means there is now just a game separating first to fifth.

The Demons surrendered top spot to the Bulldogs with their loss and with the Dogs, Brisbane, Port Adelaide and Geelong all winning, a game of musical chairs is developing at the top of the ladder.

Every game that features teams in the top five is vitally important in the run home to the finals and the biggest of this round is the first – Thursday night’s Port Adelaide-Melbourne clash at Adelaide Oval.

The Demons are wobbly, but given the Power’s poor record against other top-four teams this year, it is as much a statement game for them as it is the Demons.

NAB AFL Rising Star JUSTIN McINERNEY SYDNEY SWANS

I

t has been a stellar year for emerging Swans and Justin McInerney this week became the fourth Sydney player in 2021 to receive a NAB AFL Rising Star nomination.

He had 22 possessions (five contested), laid two tackles and had two score involvements in the thumping 92-point win over West Coast at GMHBA Stadium last Sunday.

It was his second nomination, after gathering 14 possessions and kicking two goals in the Swans’ win against Melbourne in round 15 last year.

The Marcellin College product, who played his junior football for Banyule and was drafted to the Swans with the 44th overall pick at the 2018 NAB AFL Draft, is lightning quick, an endurance machine and a clean user of the footy who is best used on a wing or at half-back.

He joins Errol Gulden, Braeden Campbell and Chad Warner as Sydney nominees this year.

u It has been one hell of a ride for Fyfe.

Over 12 seasons, the Dockers superstar has taken all before him from an individual viewpoint.

Fyfe is a two-time Brownlow medallist, a two-time AFLPA MVP, has won a trio of All-Australian blazers – one as captain – and three Doig Medals as Fremantle’s best and fairest.

Fyfe has dealt with numerous injuries, limiting his games tally in multiple seasons, but there is no doubting his unique ability as a clearance beast who can take contested marks with the best of them.

He is a legitimate star of the game.

u Zorko had an unconventional pathway to

Brisbane, taken initially by Gold Coast as a Queensland zone selection before being on-traded to the Lions.

It’s fair to say the Suns would be rueing that decision, as the Brisbane captain brings up his 200th game this weekend.

Zorko is a four-time Lions best and fairest winner, two-time club leading goalkicker, an All-Australian in 2017 and has led the side since 2018. He could even be a premiership skipper by season’s end.

Selected with pick No. 39 in the 2008 NAB AFL Draft, Motlop started his career at Geelong, kicking 175 goals in 135 games across nine seasons.

A highly-talented player who knows where the goals are, Motlop finished second in the Cats’ best and fairest in 2015 and was named in the initial All-Australian squad in 2013.

Motlop then sought a fresh start elsewhere, joining the Power as a restricted free agent in 2017 and has gone on to represent the club on 64 occasions.

AFL FOOTY BOSS TO RETURN TO CATS

he AFL is on the hunt for a new head of football after Steve Hocking was named as Geelong’s CEO. It will be a true homecoming for Hocking, who played 199 games for the Cats and later returned to the club in a variety of off-field senior commercial and football roles.

He joined the AFL in late 2017 and was a true agent for change. After 12 months of observation and widespread industry consultation, he unleashed a raft of changes in 2019, including new kick-in rules and the six-six-six rule at centre bounces.

He also reduced interchange rotations and this year brought

ONE WEEK at a TIME in the ‘stand on the mark’ rule in a bid to speed up the game and increase scoring.

After an early spike in scoring, it is back to roughly 2019 levels, but it is generally felt the game is as attractive to watch as it has been for many years.

In 2020, Hocking left Victoria for much of the COVID-affected season and made the call for quarter lengths to be reduced by 25 per cent to 16 minutes, given the likelihood the season would be compressed and teams would need to play multiple games a week at some stage.

While at the AFL, he also oversaw a new score review system known as the ARC (AFL Review Centre) and overhauled the Match Review Panel by installing Michael Christian as the sole Match Review Officer.

At Geelong, he will replace the legendary Brian Cook, who will step down later this year after a distinguished 22-year stint during which he restored the club to financial prosperity and oversaw the redevelopment of nearly all of GMHBA Stadium, making it the third

largest in Victoria. The Cats also won three premierships and became a destination club for players, coaches and administrators.

Previously Cook spent nine years as West Coast CEO. The AFL hopes to name Hocking’s replacement before the Grand Final.

he biggest and highest profile position in football?

That’s easy. It is the chief executive of the AFL. Rounding out the trifecta would probably be the AFL football operations manager job, now vacant, which makes all the key decisions about the look and feel of the game, and the Match Review Officer, whose weekly findings are as scrutinised as the games themselves.

In 2021, you might want to throw the AFL’s head of fixturing into the conversation. Thankless task. Sleepless nights and major ramifications.

And the next biggest job in football might just well be the senior coach of Collingwood.

There are clubs with a deeper bank balance (West Coast), more members (Richmond) and clubs that cast pretty much an entire state in their thrall (Adelaide).

It’s not for the fainthearted

But Collingwood has a massive supporter base that lives and dies with the fortunes of their club.

An almost equal number despise the club and all it stands for.

There are three clubs – Carlton, Richmond and Melbourne – who would clearly label the Magpies as their ‘biggest rival’ and several others including Essendon, St Kilda, Geelong, Brisbane and Port Adelaide who need little motivation for getting up for a game against the Pies.

The old joke – “I barrack for two clubs – mine and whoever is playing Collingwood!” – is not far from the truth.

As SEN and Fox Footy host and broadcaster Gerard Whateley said, “There’s a scale to Collingwood still in this national competition.

The club holds such a place in Melbourne life.”

The senior coach sits front and centre in the hierarchy at every club. Add the profile and fascination with Collingwood and you begin to understand the importance of the long and comprehensive process the club has recently started to find its next coach.

What the Magpies are doing in finding their new coach is almost unprecedented in their history.

If there wasn’t a wink and a nod approach to finding some of the club’s previous coaches, then there certainly wasn’t anything like the painstaking process of today.

Nathan Buckley was anointed by former president Eddie McGuire after the succession plan that neither Buckley nor incumbent Mick Malthouse were comfortable with. But it was instituted nevertheless.

Malthouse was headhunted from West Coast. Tony Shaw took over as coach after Leigh Matthews finished up, only 12 months after his storied playing career was over.

Matthews was three games into his role as Bob Rose’s assistant when the Magpie legend decided Matthews was ready and chose to step aside.

Perhaps only when John Cahill was surprisingly plucked from Port Adelaide in 1983 have the Pies ever really appeared to cast their net far and wide to find their next coach.

super-competitive newspaper and TV outlets and incessant social media, is nearly off the charts.

Everyone has their view. The Pies need an experienced hand at the wheel. Don Pyke, Michael Voss or Brad Scott in their second go around or Ross Lyon – despite his remarks last week on Footy Classified – at his third club.

Or do the Pies take their pick from the rising stars among the ranks of assistant coaches, with Sam Mitchell, Adam Kingsley, Craig Macrae, Dale Tapping and Adem Yze all having their admirers?

Not even the Pies know the answer, but about all we can say about the identity of the next coach of Collingwood is that he will be an outsider.

With the exception of Scott, who spent three years with the club as an assistant coach between his retirement as a Brisbane player in 2006 and his appointment as North Melbourne coach in 2010, and Tapping, Brisbane’s highly-regarded midfield coach and before that the Magpies VFL coach, there is no connection whatsoever to Collingwood.

That might be a good thing.

Collingwood’s two most recent premiership coaches, Matthews in 1990 and Malthouse in 2010, came from rival clubs.

Buckley was one of several Magpie champions tapped on the shoulder to coach the club, but like Shaw, Rose, Neil Mann and Murray Weideman before him, was unable to land that elusive premiership and join the legendary Jock McHale and Phonse Kyne, who did.

Buckley will be remembered as one of the most iconic figures in Collingwood history, but without a flag and only several close calls to his name as a player and a coach, he is also one of its most tragic.

But what the Magpies tend to do is give their coaches plenty of time.

Unlike some clubs, Collingwood cannot be accused of being trigger happy when it comes to coaching length of tenure.

Matthews held the job for 10 years (although he lasted just five after winning the ‘coach for life’ flag in 1990), Malthouse held it for 12 seasons and Buckley was in charge for nine-and-a-half years.

o, what can the next coach of Collingwood expect?

What wisdom do some of those who walked in the same shoes have to offer?

“It’s not for the faint-hearted, but then again, coaching’s not either,” Shaw told the AFL Record.

“Collingwood has always had a high membership and has been a perennial finalist for the last 40 years, so the expectations are high.

“That’s a matter of course going into the job, but you would step into the role knowing it will be coming from all four corners if it doesn’t work out right.”

The smell of blood at the Magpies has long been manna from heaven for TV and radio producers.

Newspapers and their digital counterparts have racked up ridiculous numbers when it came to Collingwood stories this year, both McGuire’s troubles and eventual departure, and then when Buckley followed him out the door.

Buckley retained his dignity throughout and departed the club with his head held high and his reputation perhaps even enhanced.

“What is always true of Collingwood is that, historically, the coach has been the dominant public face of the club,” said Jake Niall, chief football writer for The Age and a long-time close observer of all things Collingwood, although McGuire was highly visible through his 22 years.

Strength of character has always been a trait of Collingwood coaches.

Matthews, Shaw, Malthouse and Buckley had strong and assertive personalities.

Would a quietly-effective leader such as Brisbane’s Chris Fagan suit the Pies? The current process should sort that out.

Both Shaw and Malthouse urged the next coach of Collingwood to embrace the club’s history and to get a feel for the culture.

“If you are ever going to coach a club, you should know the history. Have the respect for the club to learn its history,” Shaw said.

He knew every inch of Victoria Park, having played 16 years there before becoming coach.

Malthouse played for St Kilda and Richmond and coached Footscray and West Coast before arriving at the club.

But he did grow up in Ballarat as a Collingwood supporter.

“You have to understand the club and that’s the first principle about any coach going anywhere,” Malthouse said.

“Unless it’s a relatively new club like West Coast was when I joined it, it has formed its own history and its own culture.

“So, you must understand the history and then add to the great culture of it.”

Part of the embrace of the club is the rabid and ravenous supporter base.

“You’ve got to acknowledge that at Collingwood, 99 per cent of their supporters have grown up black and white,” said Malthouse, who cited the passion of the fans when asked to compare the Magpies with West Coast and Carlton, the other big clubs he coached.

“You hear the jokes that they have no teeth, (but) it galvanises you and principally you never, ever forget the supporters because they are magnificent,” Malthouse said.

And with that comes the understanding of where the coach fits in at the club.

“You are just a servant of the football club. Nothing more and nothing less,” he said.

“You cannot make the club about you; it’s about blending in.”

And there is that scrutiny.

Malthouse was fortunate, as was Buckley before him, to have the ubiquitous McGuire there as the lightning rod.

“Eddie was fantastic,” Malthouse said. “He took the heat right off a lot of the stuff I would have to do or say.”

It will be different for the new coach. Incumbent president Mark Korda has a far lower profile than his predecessor – which isn’t all that hard to be fair – while potential challenger Jeff Browne has yet to unveil his media strategy.

But Collingwood’s location at the Holden Centre, just a stone’s throw from the Melbourne CBD, meant that pre-COVID and hopefully post it the weekly coach’s media conference is routinely the most attended of the week.

Not even when he was winning flag after flag with the Hawks would Alastair Clarkson draw the same numbers.

The new coach will need to take all that into consideration, plus a whole lot more.

“It requires a man of presence and profile, a figure who can absorb the magnitude of the club so as not to be swamped by it,” Whateley said.

“He’ll need to be a statesman from the first day on the job.

That’s going to be a very real dynamic to navigate while building a team to compete.”

From the very first day the new coach clocks on, it will be a big job but, as Shaw firmly believes, it can also be incredibly rewarding.

“You’ve just got to do it your own way,” he said.

“Be yourself, stick true to what you believe in, and if it’s not right, you’ll pay the price.

“But if it goes well, you’ll have a happy time and the club will support you to the hilt.”

It sounds like one hell of a job.

u Gold Coast midfielder Touk Miller was in a devastating mood last week.

Miller, 25, was a one-man wrecking ball in his side’s upset win over Richmond at Marvel Stadium in the Thursday night game to kick off round 16.

The largely unheralded Suns star has often flown under the radar over his career, but people are now starting to take notice. And rightly so.

He amassed 36 disposals against the Tigers and was damaging when in possession, hitting targets at will and putting teammates into better positions with his clever hands.

Miller won the ball nine times at stoppages, including five centre clearances, went inside 50 on five occasions and, as is his custom as a tireless worker, laid seven tackles in the trenches.

In recent weeks, the Suns’ ball movement had been stagnant, but Miller’s influence allowed them to unlock some fluidity forward of centre.

It wasn’t the most prolific performance numbers-wise across the weekend, but it certainly was one of the most important to his side’s fortunes, and one that had Suns coach Stuart Dew almost lost for words.

“I don’t know what to say about Touk,” he said.

“We’re lucky to have him at our footy club. He’s putting in a season to remember.

“He’s an absolute pro. He knows now that when he comes to the game, he’s going to play a good game because he’s confident in his process.”

Scott Cummings made an exciting AFL debut, kicking 8.1 for Essendon against Sydney in round 14, 1994.

After three seasons, he moved to Port Adelaide and played in the club’s inaugural match in 1997.

Two years later, he joined the West Coast Eagles and in his first season with the club won the Coleman Medal with 95 goals.

He formed a great bond with energetic forward Phil Matera who booted 51 for the year.

In round four, 2000, West Coast was at home to lowly Adelaide at the WACA and Cummings had a feast.

After a quiet first quarter, the Eagles kicked 9.2 in the second term, 9.4 in the third and 7.4 in the last.

Cummings finished with a club-record 14.1, with West Coast winning 29.13 (187) to 10.13 (73).

Two weeks later, he booted 10 goals against Fremantle at Subiaco Oval to help West Coast record a 117-point victory.

In 2002, he moved to his fourth club, Collingwood, and in his first game kicked five goals.

He played four more matches for the Pies and finished his career with 349 goals from 128 games.

Taylor Walker in his tracks, as many an opposition defender would attest.

But last Saturday the veteran Crows forward came a cropper at Adelaide Oval when he cannoned into Brisbane Lions defender Daniel Rich midway through the second quarter.

Medical staff were concerned Walker

had suffered a serious neck injury and he remained on the ground for a minute before leaving the field.

He was eventually subbed out and Crows coach Matthew Nicks said later that Walker was “stiff and sore”.

“He’s got quite a substantial knock to his neck and we were extremely concerned early, but he’s been

cleared, no concussion,” Nicks said.

Walker’s loss was a big blow for the Crows who matched the Lions in the first half but fell away after half-time to lose by 52 points. Walker is averaging almost three goals a game in 2021 to sit on 41 goals (five behind Carlton’s Harry McKay) in the race for the Coleman Medal.

Tigers should heed Hawk lessons With its 2021 aspirations all but gone, Richmond might want to look at what Hawthorn did after its premiership hat-trick.

awthorn coach Alastair Clarkson and his Richmond counterpart Damien Hardwick are close friends.

But will the latter study the moves of the former as he looks to chart the path forward for his club now that hopes of winning the 2021 premiership appear to be over?

It is the steps taken by the Hawks as their golden era ended at the end of 2016 that will be most scrutinised by the Tigers.

Certainly, given the way lists are managed these days, the Hawthorn experience is a bit more relevant than Brisbane’s tumble down the table in the years that followed its 2001-03 premiership hat-trick.

After winning three straight flags between 2013 and 2015, the Hawks were obliged to chase a fourth in 2016 and to equal the Collingwood ‘Machine’ record from 1927-30.

Hawthorn shepherded Brian Lake and David Hale into retirement and lost Matthew Suckling to free agency, but otherwise the list stayed intact.

The Hawks fell away a bit that season and an ageing team was eliminated from the finals in straight sets after a fourth-place finish, although they were a missed shot by Isaac Smith from making another preliminary final.

Nobody could fault Richmond for going all out to win another flag next year

It is what happened next that is most illustrative.

Hawthorn traded out Sam Mitchell and Jordan Lewis at the end of that season and moved on Luke Hodge and Josh Gibson 12 months later.

But it topped up with Tom Mitchell, Jaeger O’Meara and Chad Wingard rather than hit the draft hard.

Over the next three years, its earliest draft selection was No. 45 in 2017.

Only in the past few years have the Hawks gone hard at the draft with early picks and, given they appear to have struck gold with the likes of Will Day and Denver Grainger-Barras, it is reasonable to consider what might have happened had they moved into rebuild mode as soon as the ‘four-peat’ dream was over.

Chances are they would already be back in finals contention, perhaps even in the mix for Clarkson’s “next piece of silverware”.

Richmond’s hopes of a third straight flag and its fourth in five years appear to be over.

Consecutive losses to St Kilda and Gold Coast have pretty much consigned the Tigers to a season where scraping into the eight will be achievement enough.

Too many injuries, too many stars below their best and too many depth players now at other clubs have taken their toll.

But now it gets interesting and Richmond could go a few ways.

With perhaps Bachar Houli the only player who might retire at the end of the season, Hardwick could reasonably back his ageing, but

star-studded squad to contend for one more premiership next year, especially with several months to rest and recuperate beforehand, something they couldn’t do at the end of last year.

As it is, the Tigers hold a nice hand at the forthcoming draft with two first-round and two second-round selections.

They could strengthen their draft hand further by trading out-of-favour Daniel Rioli, for whom they would probably receive a second-round pick.

They’ll find it tough to keep both big men Mabior Chol and Callum Coleman-Jones.

If the latter chooses to leave, they’ll get more draft picks in the door.

They might strongly consider Adam Cerra, the emerging Fremantle midfielder who is looking to return to Victoria, although they’d likely – and rightly – baulk at the reported $700,000 a season he is seeking.

Nobody could fault Richmond for going all out to win another flag next year. But three flags in four years – especially after 37 years of disappointment in the lead-up – earns a surprising amount of goodwill from supporters.

If the club decides the time is right for a reboot, then the fans will buy it.

Hardwick only needs to look at his great mate Clarkson, who took his sweet time in embarking on a rebuild.

But now that he has finally done so, memories of the premiership three-peat are still fresh enough that every Hawthorn supporter has come along for the ride.
