ow’s your footy frenzy going? As the AFL kicked off its herculean task of completing 33 games over 20 consecutive days, round nine was completed in a flourish over five days and starting on the next Monday another round was underway, albeit with four clubs – West Coast, Carlton, Hawthorn and Fremantle – having a bye.

Round 10 is also historic in that it starts on a Monday and finishes on a Friday, making it the first round in the AFL’s 124-year history which will feature no weekend games.

Not that there will be time to dwell on this because round 11 starts the following day.

Back in March, AFL chief executive Gillon McLachlan warned that the League would need to be “nimble and agile” in order to get the season away and indeed completed, and that mantra remains strong.

The League had to move quickly to bring forward the relocation of Sydney and the GWS Giants to the Queensland hub by several days after a snap decision by Queensland premier Annastacia Palaszczuk to close her state’s borders with New South Wales. u We’re slap bang in the

The League also relocated the round 11 North Melbourne and Melbourne game from Hobart’s Blundstone Arena to Adelaide Oval because the borders between Tasmania and Queensland – where the two clubs have been based – remain closed.

It will be the first AFL game at Adelaide Oval not to feature either South Australian-based club.

In the Herald Sun, McLachlan explained the reasons why the League went down the path of cramming in all these matches in the middle of the season.

“Firstly, the feedback from clubs and players was that while they were in hubs they may as well play as many games as they can and reduce the time away,” he wrote.

“Secondly, as the COVID-19 pandemic continues to be a factor

The evidence is strong that interest in the game has sky-rocketed in 2020.

TV numbers in the game’s Victorian heartland are particularly solid, no surprise given that fans have been unable to attend games all year.

But the AFL’s position in the northern markets has been strong, especially Queensland which is now the home base for 14 of the 18 clubs and whose homegrown As someone said, there are going to be some great books and documentaries out of the season and you wonder how history will record 2020 in 30 or 40 years?

Every club deserves a big pat on the pack, from admin down to playing, coaching and fitness staff. If someone has their nose out of joint, at least they are keeping it behind closed doors.

Alastair Clarkson has been told to zip it after he had a crack about the umpires post the Swans-Hawks game in round eight, but at least that was a football-related matter.

The NFL, whose training camps have just opened and whose return-to-play protocols have borrowed from the AFL in several aspects, has already had a bunch of players, including six from the powerhouse New England Patriots, decide to opt out of the season.

The AFL continues to plough on and increasingly it is the usual talking points – umpiring, standard of play, the rules, the flag and the Brownlow that have become the major talking points, just like in a regular season.

“Everyone has a role and is committed to it, from players, coaches, staff and families,” McLachlan said. “We are committed because allowing us to play this season not only provides joy to millions of footy fans, but protects the thousands of jobs that the football industry provides across the country.”

NAB AFL Rising Star CALEB SERONG FREMANTLE

T

he round eight comparative stats line for Fremantle youngster Caleb Serong in round eight said it all.

Yes, the Dockers lost to Geelong by 32 points, but he finished with 22 disposals, three clearances, seven tackles and a delightful curling goal.

His direct opponent, no less than Geelong superstar Patrick Dangerfield, had 18 disposals and three tackles.

It was just the fifth AFL match for Serong, the former Victorian Country under-18 skipper who was selected by the Dockers with the eighth selection at the 2019 NAB AFL Draft.

“Obviously it was quite disappointing to not get the win, but to get that recognition was really good,” he said after learning he was the latest nominee for the NAB AFL Rising Star Award.

“I personally thought it was my best game that I’ve played at AFL level and I feel like I’m starting to improve each week and I’m learning a lot. It was nice to get that recognition.”

hen the story of the remarkable and historic 2020 season is written, the move to play shorter quarters will likely be hailed as the most significant.

It’s a decision that pre-dates the game being shut down at the start of the season.

It was mandated in the playing rules for 2020 back in March, when COVID-19 loomed on the horizon and a season stoppage appeared likely, but not certain.

The reduction from 20-minute to 16-minute quarters has allowed players to recover more quickly between games.

It has been a game-changer, particularly during this ‘football frenzy’ with matches every day and clubs playing regularly off four and five-day breaks.

Richmond high-performance manager Peter Burge told the AFL Record that the shorter quarters, which pretty much amount to a 20 per cent reduction in playing time, has aided players in their recovery between games.

“All their numbers suggest that by day three after the previous game they feel pretty good,” he said.

In many instances, teams are replacing their main, high-intensity training for the week with games.

High-performance managers have become among the most critically important people in the game as it manoeuvers through this difficult period.

Ultimately, the calls on which players can back up for multiple games in a short period rests with them.

They’re the ones collating the information, which is a complex matrix of in-game data such as minutes played, the number of rotations and distances covered, with all sorts of off-field wellness measurements that take into account elements such as sleep, diet and recovery.

It also takes some honesty from the players.

“It comes out in the conversations and the numbers from the data and what they’re reporting medically,” Burge said.

The relocation of the Victorian clubs to Queensland has been a bonus. The Tigers are located at KDV Sport, a complex in Southport that Burge likened to a “mini AIS (Australian Institute of Sport)”.

Everything they need for high performance, including a top-ranked chef, is at their disposal.

The team was supposed to move elsewhere after a week, but the players successfully lobbied to stay there.

“The warmer climate helps and perhaps that’s why they’re recovering more quickly,” Burge said. “It does appear that our training sessions up here have been really, really good and the weather impact, with the blue skies, the temperature and the weather adds to the mental side of things.”

The downside is that the players cannot escape the club or football.

The Tigers enjoy limited movement outside their accommodation and their families are on their way to joining them, but as Burge noted, pretty much wherever they go, they’re surrounded by other Richmond people.

“In Melbourne on your day off, you’re not seeing anyone else from the footy club. You can really switch off. Here it’s more off a challenge for everyone and it makes it a bit

harder to get away from the football environment, so the mental side is challenging from that aspect.”

But don’t think for a moment the players feel harshly done by, nor expect any sympathy.

Knowing what’s happening in their home state gives all those in the hubs the reality check they need.

“We understand to keep the game going, this is what we have to do and our families have been amazing in supporting that,” he said.

t has taken three states, three clubs and 15 seasons for Paddy Ryder, but he is on track to play his 250th game when St Kilda plays Gold Coast in round 10.

Originally from East Fremantle, Ryder was one of the most highly-regarded key-position prospects in the 2005 National Draft and ended being selected by Essendon with the seventh pick.

He gave the Bombers tremendous service over 170 games in nine seasons.

He was popular with supporters and was a dream for the coaches with his ability to swing through the forward line while also chalking up significant minutes in the ruck.

But the supplements scandal that rocked the club took its toll on Ryder, arguably more than most, and he fell out of love with Essendon.

Port Adelaide was at the front of the queue to secure his services and he crossed there in 2015 and played 73 games in five years.

He didn’t play in 2016, serving a 12-month suspension as part of the fallout from the events at the Bombers, but his 2017 season was outstanding and he ended up the All-Australian ruckman and Port Adelaide’s best and fairest.

He played 17 games for the Power last season, but his future at Alberton appeared more cloudy the longer the season went, with Scott Lycett and Todd Marshall firming as the club’s preferred ruck tandem and Peter Ladhams waiting in the wings.

Essendon was keen to get him back this year, but he opted to join the Saints.

There was no prospect of regular senior football at Moorabbin either, with Rowan Marshall’s rapid emergence as one of the best ruckmen in the AFL. But St Kilda is working out how to best utilise Ryder and Marshall together and in round eight against Port Adelaide, Ryder enjoyed his best game with the Saints.

He had 29 hit-outs and kicked two goals and, with Marshall, took Ladhams – and Port – to the cleaners.

It is doubtful Ryder will play every game from here.

He is likely to miss a game or two over the next few weeks during this fixture crush.

But with the Saints charging at speed towards the finals, he appears to have selected the right club to close out his fine career.

has heaped praise on a “terrific” Noah Balta, comparing him to champion premiership defender Alex Rance.

Balta has played in the past five games and has largely impressed down back.

In round nine’s 41-point win over the Western Bulldogs, he collected 15 touches while directly matched up on Josh Bruce.

“I thought he was terrific (against the Dogs), and he’s been very good throughout the year,” Hardwick said.

“He probably had one down game, but we think for us to be a very good side, he’s got to play. He’s just going to grow into the role.

“I’m loathe to say it but he does remind me of a young Alex Rance, I look at the way he plays the game … he does some things that only players like him can do and then he’ll make a mistake that only he and Alex could do.”

arryd Roughead was front and centre of football’s most recent golden era, the Hawthorn premiership three-peat from 2013 to 2015.

One of the game’s most beloved figures, he played as a key forward and was on the receiving end of silver service from stars such as Luke Hodge, Sam Mitchell, Jordan Lewis, Cyril Rioli and others as the Hawks went on their merry way.

He played alongside Lance Franklin for the first nine years of his career and had a front row seat for the one of the greatest shows in the game.

And he talks about all of it in his just-released biography, Roughy.

The Autobiography.

His pathway from a Leongatha basketball prospect to four AFL premierships, 283 games, 578 goals, a Coleman Medal and two All-Australian blazers is recounted in that trademark laconic but straight-to-the-point manner.

But what makes Roughy such a great read are the 64 pages in the middle in which Roughead describes the melanoma he first discovered on his lip in 2015 and which spread to his lung the following year.

Together with some of those closest to him, Roughead shares the rollercoaster ride with us, the shock and the gravity of the diagnosis and the fears that followed, while he also describes with great detail

the treatment and some of the debilitating side effects.

The football world gave Roughead his privacy during his illness and what a blessing that proved to be.

He was engaged in quite the fight.

Of course, he came out of it at the end with a clean bill of health, but there was more drama to come.

His playing career came to an end last season and, as the book reveals, he and Hawks coach Alastair Clarkson had their moments as that played out. u Roughy. The Autobiography.

MAGPIES MOURN A CLUB GREAT u Former

Collingwood captain Terry Waters is being remembered as a man who saved the Magpies on many fronts.

Waters, who passed away on July 28, made his mark as a key forward in the early part of his career.

But he gave up the goalsquare to Peter McKenna in 1965, allowing one career to launch in spectacular fashion while Waters made his name as a ruck-rover and outstanding intercept defender.

Waters kicked 50 goals in his debut season in 1963 to claim Collingwood’s best first-year player award.

He won the Copeland Trophy in 1966, All-Australian selection in 1969 and captained the Pies in 1970 and 1971.

His career ended in 1972 after 163 games and 181 goals.

Waters also played eight games for Victoria.

The Collingwood Hall of Fame member, who passed away after a battle with cancer, is survived by wife Jane, son Tom and daughter Charlotte.

He was 76.

uddenly the game is dreadful compared with the good old days. But back then football was semi-professional, the players were not as fit, there were two substitutes rather than four interchange players on the bench and no rotations.

Congestion and defensive tactics (particularly hugging the boundary) are receiving much of the blame.

Restricting backwards kicks would be a nightmare for umpires to adjudicate, but kicking back into the defensive arc should be play on, as would any subsequent kick that stays within that arc.

Kicks bouncing out between the arcs, or perhaps even in the offensive arc (when kicked by the attacking team), should result in a free kick.

It would be tough on defenders under pressure who bounce a kick over the line within the arc to be penalised (unless deliberate).

All ball-ups should be a minimum 15m in from the boundary to produce an outside channel, and the umpire and rucks would reach the spot more quickly.

These changes would add little to the umpires’ load, but all would make such defensive play less effective.

The AFL’s Charter for the Laws of the Game refers to there being few restrictions on the direction and movement of the ball and where players can be located.

It also states that 18 players on the ground is a fundamental element of our code.

Reducing it to 16 players after more than 120 years of use seems an overreaction, rather like having

a cricket team of nine to increase run-scoring.

Zoning, where players are not allowed out of certain areas, would be difficult to work in practice.

It would prevent a sweeping attack out of defence, and what happens when the ball rolls just short of the arc?

At times, players would have to stop and wait as they are not allowed out of their zone.

It seems impractical to apply restrictions at every stoppage as there are so many of them.

What might work is to require four players from each side to immediately retreat to the far arc when a behind is scored.

The four players could only leave the arc once they are all back and not before the full-back kicks in. It would be a reset not a zoning – as we already have at centre bounces.

Swans, Giants flee NSW u The AFL’s two Sydney-based teams had to evacuate the

state after Queensland closed its border to Greater Sydney.

Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk announced she was closing her state’s borders to all of Greater Sydney amid a small rise in COVID-19 cases in New South Wales.

Sydney and the GWS Giants had to relocate before their respective games in Queensland in round nine.

After round 11 byes, both sides will play in Queensland again in round 12 before jetting off to Western Australia.

In rugby union, if a player gets into an offside position and is not directly affecting play, he can retreat until onside again. This would be similar.

As always, there would be a few grey areas. For example, a long kick up the middle by the full-back might reach or even pass all players before any have properly retreated into the arc.

The result would usually be a free to the attacking team, as the interpretation should always be in their favour.

Taking eight men out of nearly two thirds of the ground at a kick-in will open up the game.

There should be more goals and more 6/6/6 restarts, and more behinds and more arc resets.

Meanwhile, the round 11 match between North Melbourne and Melbourne, has been moved from Blundstone Arena to Adelaide Oval.

This change is due to the extension of border restrictions in to Tasmania.

Melbourne will now be the designated ‘home’ team.

The Demons play at Adelaide Oval in round 10 and will remain in Adelaide for the four days leading into the round 11 match against the Roos.

Marathon on course to shape flag Big run of successive games will make or break the 2020 premiership contenders.

T

he buzz phrase coming out of AFL House in 2020 has been the constant need to be “agile and flexible” and one look at the footy marathon in store over the coming weeks is conclusive proof of that.

An extraordinary 33 games will be played across 20 consecutive days as the AFL looks to compress the season, forcing clubs to play matches off as little as four-day breaks.

It’s a proposition that will stretch even the most adaptable and flexible of footballers.

The next stretch of the season, which began on Wednesday, July 29, with the Western Bulldogs’ ‘home’ clash against Richmond at Metricon Stadium, is well underway and how teams deal with the challenges that these shorter breaks between matches will bring is set to define their season.

For footy fans across Australia – and especially those in Victoria now in lockdown due to COVID-19 – the next few weeks are just about footy nirvana with games on every night.

You get the sense footy-loving Melburnians accustomed to going to the MCG or Marvel Stadium every weekend in winter will welcome the distraction from the challenges the wider community faces.

Nick Riewoldt suggested in a recent episode of On The Couch that Geelong – which has to play four games over a 14-day stretch – should target a specific game to rest many of its biggest names, essentially waving the white flag in a game with four premiership points on the line.

While that may not eventuate, Riewoldt’s point about managing an entire playing squad through the most compressed part of any season in memory is a salient one and something all clubs would be grappling with.

Further north and west of Victoria, every club will have their own strategy to deal with the stretch of matches and the Brisbane Lions stand to be one of the big winners of the compressed fixture as they continue to largely enjoy the benefits of home comforts.

Lions coach Chris Fagan said he would be looking to put his best available team on the park, which by the end of round 12 could see its spot in the top four solidified.

“I don’t think you can be too tricky,” Fagan said on SEN’s Whateley.

“Each week will we pick the guys that are genuinely fit enough to play and put our best team out to play but there might be a couple of exceptions to that rule like for instance Grant Birchall, who’s an older player who might not play all of those games.

“Outside of that, we’ll just be trying to pick our best available team.”

Another team which could reap the benefits of the fixture pile-up is the Western Bulldogs, who over the season have routinely shuffled their team around.

Players such as Cody Weightman, Callum Porter, Louis Butler, Laitham Vandermeer and Ben Cavarra all got their taste of senior action for the first time in 2020 and, as other sides inevitably lose players to injury, Luke Beveridge will be confident in the knowledge his squad will be able to cover any issues which may arise.

When this marathon run of games ends on August 16, the ladder will have largely sorted itself out and the premiership contenders will have shown why they’re in the running to win this year’s flag.

This will make some teams and break others, but as this year has constantly shown, the sides who are able to adapt the best will be the most successful in setting up their premiership tilt ahead of the final six rounds of this most extraordinary of home and away seasons. @LaurenceRosen

Richmond line-up as the footy frenzy got underway in round nine.

The 20-year-old has been in and out of the Tigers side in 2020, but gave himself every chance of cementing his spot with a strong defensive showing in the 41-point win over the Western Bulldogs at Metricon Stadium.

In his short career, Stack has been known for his smooth-moving, sublime kicking and penchant to take a hanger and kick a goal, but on this occasion it was the other side of his game which stood out.

According to Champion Data’s numbers, Stack led the way for the Tigers with 47.9 pressure points courtesy of 21 pressure acts and a game-high seven tackles, which is the best tackle return in his 22-game AFL career.

Stack was used mainly as a pressure forward and, although he may not have picked up as much of the ball as he would have liked, he did his job from a defensive viewpoint.

The best for the Bulldogs on the night was another returning player, Toby McLean, who picked up 47.3 pressure points from 18 pressure acts and four tackles.

Champion Data introduced its pressure point system in 2011 as a way of measuring defensive intent beyond just tackles, spoils and smothers.

Points are awarded for corralling (1.2), chasing (1.5), closing (2.75) and physical pressure (3.75).

Soldo, who claimed a premiership medal in last year’s Grand Final demolition against the GWS Giants, is the only one of that surname to play senior AFL/VFL football. The origin of his surname can be traced back to the Latin solidus, a fourth century Roman coin.

(For older readers, the s in Australia’s pre-metric currency’s £.s.d. is for solidi, plural of solidus.)

As time passed, the soldo (the Italian form) was minted throughout Italy and in the Middle Ages was used as a term to stand for the pay of soldiers. Soldo then became the basis of the word “soldier” (soldato, soldat etc.) in other countries in Europe.

DEREK BROWN, COODANUP, WA MG: Malcolm Blight starred in both competitions. He kicked 103 goals for North Melbourne in 1982 then returned to Woodville and in 1985 booted 126. There were others who featured in two competitions. George Moloney kicked 109 goals for Geelong (1932) and, while playing with Claremont in the WAFL, he kicked 129 (1940) and 108 (1941).

Essendon’s Ron Evans was a dual Coleman medallist in 1959 and 1960. He later joined West Perth and in 1963 headed the WAFL goalkicking with 97.

Simon Beasley kicked 97 goals for Swan Districts in the WAFL in 1980, followed by 119 in 1981.

He joined Footscray and in 1985 won the Coleman Medal after booting 105 for the season. Ian Brewer had success in the VFL, the WAFL and the SANFL. With Collingwood in 1958, he played in a premiership and won the Coleman Medal, in 1964 he played in Claremont’s premiership team, and with Norwood in 1965, he led the SANFL goalkicking with 96.

There is minimal strategy required due to this rule, however, some coaches may decide that trading in a player with a bye could be a positive thing for their side.
