Healthy Holiday Eating Tips An update from Dana Pierce, Nutrition Administrator As the holidays approach, it’s easy to get swept up in rich meals and sweet treats. But staying healthy doesn’t mean skipping the celebrations. With a few smart choices, older adults can enjoy the season while supporting their overall health. 1. Choose Nutrient-Rich Comfort Foods: These foods provide essential vitamins, fiber, and protein to support your immune system and muscle health. Fill your plate with: • Sweet potatoes, carrots, winter squash • Dark leafy greens like spinach or kale • Lean proteins: turkey, chicken, beans, fish 2. Enjoy Treats in Moderation: Holiday desserts are part of the fun! But remember: • Take smaller portions • Choose fruit-based or low-sugar options • Watch out for hidden sugars in sauces and canned foods

3. Don’t Forget to Hydrate: Even in cold weather, your body needs fluids. Try: • Warm herbal teas • Low-sodium soups • Water-rich fruits like oranges and apples 4. Reduce Sodium: Too much salt can raise blood pressure. Try these instead: • Herbs & spices • Garlic, lemon juice, or vinegar • Low-sodium broths and seasonings 5. Stay Active & Connected: Keep your body and mind healthy with light movement. • Walking • Gentle stretching • Chair exercises And don’t forget to stay social! A phone call or visit can lift your spirits. Wishing you a happy, healthy holiday season!

What’s cooking? Honey and Spice Pears Ingredients:

1 cup 100% cranberry juice 1/2 to 3/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1/8 to 1/4 teaspoon ground allspice 4 small firm pears (about 6 ounces each), peeled, halved, and cored 2 tablespoons dried unsweetened cherries or cranberries 1 tablespoon plus 1 1/2 teaspoons honey

Directions: In a large nonstick skillet, stir together the cranberry juice, cinnamon, and allspice. Add the pears and cherries. Bring to a boil over medium-high heat. Cook, covered, for 5 minutes, or until the pears are just tender-crisp. Transfer the pears with the cut side down to a serving plate, leaving the liquid in the skillet. Cook the liquid, still on medium high, for 2 1/2 to 3 minutes, or until reduced to a scant 1/4 cup, stirring frequently. Remove from the heat. Stir in the honey. Spoon over the pears. Let cool completely, about 20 minutes. Turn the pears several times to coat with the sauce or transfer them to plates and spoon the sauce on top. Beating Those Winter Blues An update from Gina Harvey, Wellness Educator The holidays are fast upon us! This season is an opportunity for joy and celebration; a popular time for reminiscing, fulfilling time honored traditions, connecting with family and friends, and enjoying delicious food. There is something each and every one of us can be thankful for and practicing gratitude can keep us focused on the positives in our lives. What holiday traditions did your family have when you were younger? What traditions have you continued, and have you started any new ones? Finding ways to connect to your past through traditions can bring great joy and help us feel connected with loved ones and friends. Going for a drive to see Christmas lights, making popcorn garland for the tree, baking your Grandma’s famous sugar cookie recipe, or placing handmade ornaments received from your grandchildren on the tree. Traditions can take you back, not just to a memory, but to a feeling of happiness and put a smile on your face. Everyone is so busy these days, but making time to visit with your friends and family is very important for emotional wellbeing. Feeling connected to others is an essential need for us all. Take the time, make the call to chat with loved ones and start looking at schedules now to figure out the best time for a gathering. If you struggle with feelings of loneliness during the holidays, you are not alone. Get involved, try a new activity that offers opportunities for socialization. Volunteering at a food bank or in the community is a great way to give back and add purpose and meaning to your day. Check out your local senior center to see what programs and classes they offer as well. From my family to yours, we wish you a very happy holiday! If you would like to learn more about our wellness courses, contact Gina Harvey, Wellness Educator, at gharvey@ lifestreaminc.org.

Outreach Corner An update from Angie Jenkins, Outreach Coordinator Protect yourself this holiday season! Unfortunately, the holiday season brings an increase in fraudulent activity targeting older adults. Stay vigilant and protect your finances by knowing what to watch for, Be wary of charity scams – Generosity is a hallmark of the season, and scammers exploit this by creating fake charities. Before donating, verify that the organization is legit with trusted resources like the Better Business Bureau. Watch for online shopping fraud – Scammers create fake websites to steal your personal and financial information. Stick to secure, reputable websites and be cautious of “deals” that seem too good to be true. Avoid “grandparent scams” – Be suspicious of calls from someone claiming to be a grandchild in urgent financial need. These scammers use emotional appeals to pressure you into sending money. Always verify the story with a trusted family member before taking any action. Hang up on unknown callers – Be cautious of unsolicited calls and texts requesting personal information or money. Remember that agencies like Social Security or Medicare will not call you to demand sensitive information. We wish you a safe and healthy holiday season and express our gratitude to everyone who has contributed to LifeStream’s 50th anniversary celebration this year! We hope you will join us at one of our 2026 events! To learn more about upcoming LifeStream events, visit lifestreaminc.org/calendar, or contact Angie Jenkins, Outreach Coordinator, at ajenkins@lifestreaminc.org.

AngelWish Spreading Golden Joy An update from Laura Bray, Volunteer Services Administrator

AngelWish is a special program that takes place over the holidays. This gift-giving program is unlike any I’ve ever heard of. We bring a little joy and hope to seniors who are truly alone for the holidays, without visits from friends, family, or loved ones. Volunteers from across the region join us to assist those in need of some holiday cheer, by creating, packaging, and distributing gift bags, and spending time with recipients. Volunteers also work with us throughout the year to create a special handmade gift to include in the gift bag. Something little to use to show the recipient that there are individuals in the world who care. The AngelWish initiative is currently accepting monetary donations for the purchase of gift items for the program. If you would like to give a little to make the holidays brighter for someone please reach out to Angie Jenkins at 765-748-6994 or ajenkins@LifeStreaminc.org. If you would like to volunteer to create a special handcrafted item, package, or deliver for AngelWish please reach out to Laura Bray at 765-808-8827 or Lbray@LifeStreaminc.org.
