Understanding the MIND Diet An update from Dana Pierce, Nutrition Administrator

Happy New Year! The new year always has us looking at new goals and ways to improve what we’re already doing. I don’t know if you’ve heard of the MIND Diet but I thought I would share some basic info for you. As we age, keeping our brains healthy becomes just as important as taking care of the rest of our bodies. The MIND diet—short for *Mediterranean-DASH Intervention for Neurodegenerative Delay*—was created to support brain health and may help reduce the risk of memory decline. It combines the best parts of the Mediterranean diet and the DASH diet, focusing on foods that protect the brain. At its core, the MIND diet encourages eating more plant-based foods, healthy fats, and lean proteins while limiting items that can harm the brain over time. The diet highlights ten “brain-healthy” food groups. These include leafy green vegetables like spinach or kale, which are packed with vitamins that support memory. Other recommended vegetables, berries (especially blueberries and strawberries), nuts, whole grains, beans, fish, and poultry all supply nutrients known to benefit brain function. Olive oil is the preferred cooking fat because it contains heart-healthy fats linked to better long-term cognitive health.

The diet also suggests limiting foods that may contribute to inflammation or poor circulation. These include red meat, butter and margarine, cheese, pastries and sweets, and fried or fast foods. You don’t have to eliminate these foods entirely, but eating them less often can make a meaningful difference. One of the reasons the MIND diet is so user-friendly is that it focuses on gradual, sustainable changes rather than strict rules. You might start by adding an extra serving of vegetables each day or swapping butter for olive oil. Enjoying a few servings of berries each week or choosing fish for dinner once or twice can also move you closer to the diet’s benefits. While the MIND diet can’t prevent memory decline entirely, research shows it may help keep the brain sharper for longer. By choosing nourishing foods more often, everyone can support both their cognitive health and overall well-being. I found a delicious and nourishing way to support brain health while enjoying a classic comfort dish. The Minestrone Soup on page 2 is a perfect fit while also promoting the MIND Diet. Packed with colorful vegetables and whole grains. Warm, satisfying, and full of flavor, this Minestrone Soup is a simple yet powerful meal to fuel your body and mind.

Revisiting Wellness Initiatives An update from Gina Harvey, Wellness Educator This year is coming to an end and we welcome a new year, full of healthy opportunities! The holiday season is a busy one, making an impact on our routines and budgets. As we kick off 2026, let’s stay mindful and work to get back on track. · Take this opportunity to focus on your nutrition! The holidays offer delicious treats, drinks, and favorite recipes to tempt us to indulge and possibly, over indulge. During these next few weeks, turn your attention toward a healthy food plan that includes fitting in all five food groups. These include vegetables, fruit, grains, protein, and dairy. Break out the water bottle to sip on throughout the day and choose to have water with meals. Staying hydrated will help aid digestion and drinking water at mealtimes will help cut down on calories. · Are you struggling to fit in all the physical activity you need during the holidays? You’re not alone. We tend to place our normal exercise routine on the back burner when things get busy. Not to mention the sun sets earlier during the winter months, encouraging us to settle in for the night sooner than normal. Use an app on your phone or a smart watch to track your activity levels to see if you are hitting the recommended 30 minutes of activity during your day. You can break up the 30 minutes into three 10-minute sessions. Activity can include walking, cleaning house, and pushing a cart around the grocery store. · Giving and receiving gifts is nice, but can hit the pocket book pretty hard. Take a moment to balance the books! Reign in overspending during the next two months, allowing time for your budget to recover and start saving now for next year. Create a spending budget and put a little back each month to prepare for future holiday expenses. If you would like to learn more about our wellness courses, contact Gina Harvey, Wellness Educator, at gharvey@lifestreaminc.org. Go to LifeStreaminc.org for wellness classes and volunteer opportunities near you or visit your local Senior Center.

Outreach Corner

An update from Angie Jenkins, Outreach Coordinator

As we ring in the new year, prioritizing social connection is crucial for overall well-being, as isolation carries health risks. By being proactive and leveraging various resources, seniors can maintain existing relationships and forge new, meaningful connections. Strong social bonds contribute to a longer, healthier life by boosting mental sharpness, improving mood, and lowering the risk of depression, anxiety, heart disease, and stroke. Regular social interaction stimulates the brain and has been linked to a reduced risk of cognitive decline and dementia. Here are some ways to stay connected in the new year: • Make Communication a Priority: Schedule regular phone calls, video chats, or in-person visits with family and friends. • Join Local Groups and Clubs: Community centers, senior centers, and local libraries offer a variety of programs and activities tailored to older adults, such as book clubs, art classes, fitness groups, and game nights. • Embrace Technology: Learning to use social media, email, and video chat can help keep you connected to a broader network. • Stay Physically Active with Others: Join a walking club, a dance class, or participate in group exercises. • Explore New Hobbies: The new year is a great time to learn something new, like a new craft. By taking proactive actions to create and sustain social relationships, older folks can assure a vibrant, healthy, and joyful new year. If feelings of loneliness linger, obtaining professional support from a healthcare physician is a beneficial start. To learn more about upcoming LifeStream events, visit lifestreaminc.org/calendar, or contact Angie Jenkins, Outreach Coordinator, at ajenkins@lifestreaminc.org.

Resolve to Make A Difference An update from Laura Bray, Volunteer Services Administrator Losing weight, improving one’s health, giving up bad habits, spending more time with family, and watching less TV are all significant and often touched on New Year’s resolutions. I have an amazing idea for a “new” New Year’s resolution that will change someone’s life: Volunteering! It’s cold outdoors, and nobody wants to go outside on a chilly, snowy day. Please consider volunteering from home. Do you like knitting, crocheting, calligraphy, making computer word games, crafting, painting, drawing, or anything in between? If you do, let’s talk! A card to say Happy Birthday, a game to play on a snowy day, a blanket to snuggle up with, or a scarf to keep someone warm could all have an impact on someone’s life. We can create an opportunity that works for you! Please express your interest to Laura Bray, the volunteer administrator at LifeStream. Together, your talents and LifeStreams’ support could brighten someone’s day! If you would like to volunteer or discuss opportunities to get involved, please reach out to Laura Bray at 765-808-8827 or Lbray@LifeStreaminc.org.
