Dear Friends of LifeStream:
Early during the COVID-19 pandemic, older adults were identified as a highly vulnerable group to the virus. In response to the people we serve suddenly becoming the most vulnerable group to a highly contagious virus, we shifted our focus and awareness within our programs and services while working to maintain a connection with those we served and our partners.
Although we shifted to home deliveries and distributions, virtual wellness, drivethru events, and more online resources, we continuously looked forward to being able to gather again. In April 2022, we excitedly welcomed our communities back into our congregate sites for in-person meals.
For those who couldn’t get out much or who continued to be at higher risk, we provided information in regard to home-delivered meals and activities that can be done from the comfort and safety of home.
During the pandemic, we’ve seen how people stepped up to help their neighbors in need, such as community partners helping with funds or food; our wonderful volunteers assisting in delivering food to those who cannot get it picked up; or people who just want to help donate to food pantries and programs. It is these positives and staying connected to our communities that we focused on during those ever-changing times.
We hope this Annual Report shows the dedication and passion we have for serving older adults, individuals with disabilities, and family caregivers as well as our vision of seeing those in the region we serve living lives of quality, choice, and independence.

Reaccreditation from Alliance of Information and Referral Systems
In June 2022, LifeStream received another five-year national accreditation from the Alliance of Information and Referral Systems (AIRS). AIRS is a professional association of more than 5,000 individuals and organizations that strives to build a high-quality community of information and referral (I&R) systems. The association develops clear and consistent standards and acts as a seal of approval for organizations providing I&R services.
Accreditation is a multi-phase process that assesses more than 200 distinct operational components and culminates in a detailed onsite review. It includes a comprehensive review of the agency’s resource database and monitoring of the agency’s I&R service delivery. The importance of AIRS Accreditation is endorsed by both national and state entities as a benchmark for all I&R providers.

LifeStream Employees Combat Compassion Fatigue
In the fall of 2021, LifeStream held an agency-wide training on compassion fatigue. Research has shown that frequent exposure to the hardships of others can lead one to become detached, apathetic and numb to the feelings of others. This is known as compassion fatigue, which is a condition characterized by a gradual lessening of compassion over time.
Employees learned how to understand the importance of empathy and recognize the warning signs of compassion fatigue to help them improve self-care and build and maintain resiliency. Working to learn tools to recover from compassion fatigue can assist in lessening the emotional heaviness of serving and supporting others.

Special Initiatives
LifeStream Makes more than 300 New Dementia Friends
The Dementia Friends Indiana initiative–an outreach of Dementia Friendly America–seeks to educate communities across the state about dementia, break down the stigma surrounding dementia, and implement practical changes that make life easier to navigate for those with dementia and those who care for them. Between July 2021 and June 2022, LifeStream staff and community volunteers made 327 new dementia friends.
Joy for All Companion Pets
Through a grant from Heart of Indiana United Way, LifeStream was able to provide 16 Joy for All Companion pets to individuals in Henry and Madison counties. The goal of these companion pets is to reduce loneliness and isolation in participants.
5
IN2L Tablets Aid in Social Isolation
IN2L tablets are additional resources to promote engagement and reduce loneliness in participants. These Android tablets include a variety of games, music, and entertainment, as well as video chat and text messaging features. LifeStream has distributed 28 of these tablets to individuals in our service area. Some participants have reported reduced depression, increased engagement, and increased confidence in learning new technology.
During the spring of 2022, LifeStream partnered with Agape Unbridled Hope Therapeutic Horseback Riding Services to administer a virtual reminiscing group using these tablets. This special program consisted of participants joining a Zoom call each week and engaging with other older adults, learning about miniature horses, and reminiscing about the past. “I learned a lot and they answered all of the questions I had (about the horses). They talked on my level so it was easy to follow and understand.” – Sandra, participant
National Caregiver Month
November is National Caregiver Month. The hope for National Caregiver Month is that non-professional caregivers and care partners would feel appreciated and seen. Throughout the month of November each year, LifeStream recognizes caregivers through a variety of means. In 2021, LifeStream operated in a drive thru model and gave out caregiver resources and pumpkin bread to those who participated.

Annual Events & Outreach
12th Annual Golf Outing
Our 12th Annual Golf Outing took place at the Players Club in Yorktown in August 2021. This event is organized to create awareness, and just as importantly, to raise funds for LifeStream Services to support the programs that are available in our communities. We had 90 players; fifteen businesses who sponsored carts, holes, breakfast, and lunch; and ten volunteers who all contributed to the success of the event. Berkshire Hathaway Indiana Realty took home the John R. Craddock Cup!
Healthy Aging Expo
We had our Healthy Aging Expo at the Kuhlman Center in Richmond. It was another successful day of providing education and community resources. The event had great community support with 3 presenting sponsors, 6 event sponsors and 46 tailgate vendors, with over 200 individuals driving through.
Aging Well Conference Returns
Our Annual Aging Well Conference returned to the Horizon Convention Center in Muncie in June of 2022. More than 45 vendors and over 200 attendees participated throughout the day in workshops, activities, and more. We had 16 presenters who focused on caregiving, dementia, wellness and also professional information along with great Keynote Speakers duo Mina Starsiak Hawk and Karen E. Laine, who reside in Indianapolis and star on the HGTV show Good Bones.

Nutrition
50 Years of Senior Nutrition
In March 2022, LifeStream Services joined the Administration of Community Living (ACL) in celebrating the 50 year anniversary of the addition of senior nutrition programs to the Older Americans Act. This important action allowed for the creation of congregate meal sites and home-delivered meal programs throughout the United States. We enjoyed celebrating with balloons, flowers, cupcakes, specialty treats, and more!
LifeStream Services Reopened Senior Cafés
LifeStream Services reopened its public senior café sites in April 2022. Older adults were invited back to enjoy lunch and socialize with others in their community at the café site nearest them. A special “welcome back” gift was distributed at the cafés. Due to the pandemic, LifeStream Senior Cafés had been operating in a drive-thru format since March 2020.

Wellness
In-Person Wellness Classes Resume
LifeStream was pleased to welcome participants back to in-person wellness classes this year. Since September 2021, we have been able to offer nine different evidence-based programs throughout our service area. These programs make an impact; participants increase their strength, flexibility, and stamina, reduce their fear and risk of falls, and improve their overall health.

JOY Games
The JOY Games – Just Older Youth – is an annual event aimed at keeping older adults active while promoting socialization. This year’s JOY Games welcomed ninety-seven participants and eight sponsor organizations to the three-day event in Richmond. Day one included activities such as chair volleyball, ping pong, billiards, Euchre, and Bingo at the Richmond Senior Center. Day two featured a Pickleball tournament at Clear Creek Park, and day three wrapped up the Games with the “Brats and Brews” Golf Scramble at Highland Lake Golf Course.
LifeStream Employee Wellness Challenges
Wellness at LifeStream extends to our employees, too! Our staff has been making positive strides, improving their own health while helping others live independently. Nearly half of our employees participated in wellness challenges to maintain their weight and achieve fitness goals. Staying active and making healthy food choices is not just a goal we’re striving to meet for our clients, but for our employees as well.

Volunteers
Volunteers Make it All Possible
Volunteers allow us to provide essential services to seniors, such as delivering meals and commodities, serving at our senior café sites, providing companionship, and other important tasks. Volunteers enhance many of our programs by providing additional support, energy, and enthusiasm and also provide a valuable service to the community by giving their time and skills to support our mission. Our annual events rely on assistance from volunteers. Volunteers help with setup, registration, greeting guests, providing information, handing out materials, and cleanup.
Partners Aid Older Adults with Leaf Raking
Ball State University Student Volunteer Services has had a successful year. They have created virtual tours for clients to enjoy. In November, 41 seniors were visited by 48 students for leaf removal. This was a great success for both the seniors and the students.
Milestone Contractors is also a LifeStream partner who continues to impact seniors through their leaf raking initiative as well as providing support for our Gleaners project.
537 volunteers provided 29,420 hours of service equal in value to $789,490

and Romaine DeLucio along with Mildred Shepherd of Grant County were recognized as runners-up for the LifeStream Golden Hoosier Award. The LifeStream Golden Hoosier Award is announced in the Spring and acknowledges outstanding volunteerism among senior citizens in LifeStream’s 12 county service area.
Volunteers Help with Gleaners Expansion
The Gleaners program has been extended into 4 new counties engaging new partners such as Rushville Food Pantry, the Jaycees in Fayette County, and the Franklin County Senior Center. In this program, we have engaged new volunteers to assist with bagging and delivery, and now deliver additional food to 175 homebound individuals twice a month.
