PT and OT Programs

Physical and Occupational Therapy Programs The Outpatient Rehabilitation Center at Lifespan provides services for general physical and occupational therapy, lymphedema, speech and language, and pelvic floor disorders, which are outlined below.

General Physical and Occupation Therapy With the help of occupational therapists and physical therapists, general rehabilitation services focuses on addressing the common side-effects of cancer including: • • •

Once referred, patients will be evaluated to develop an individualized treatment plan. Plans can include individualized exercise programs to improve balance, coordination and strength as well as occupational therapists to improve daily functioning.

Lymphedema Treatment The Outpatient Rehabilitation Services through Lifespan offers specialized treatment for patients suffering from lymphedema.

Services offered: • skin care – keeping the area clean and dry to reduce risk of infection • compression – pressure exerted on tissues through multilayer bandaging, compression garments, or a compression pump • manual lymphatic drainage – a hands-on technique that stimulates your lymphatic system by stretching the skin in particular ways 3

exercise, in which joint movements are performed in specific sequence while wearing compression • patient education, comprising information on lymphedema precautions and self-care that may include self-lymphatic drainage, home exercises, skin care, self-bandaging, compression garment use and care, and bandaging alternative use and care All five locations have physical therapists trained to address lymphedema.

Women’s and Men’s Health, Pelvic Floor Rehabilitation Center Women’s and Men’s Health Pelvic Rehabilitation addresses disorders relating to the pelvis (ie joints, muscles and nerves), such as urination, defection, sexual dysfunction, and pelvic pain that can occur after treatment for gynecologic cancer, prostate cancer, rectal cancer, and bladder cancer.

Treatments offered include biofeedback assessment and training, electrical stimulation, bladder retraining, manual therapy and specialized exercise programs, and behavioral management strategies and training.

Specialized Programs

Specialized Programs Psychiatric Oncology The psychiatric oncology and behavioral health team at the LCI offers patients services to help manage the emotional and behavioral challenges that may arise at any stage of a one’s cancer diagnosis. The psychiatric oncology team includes psychiatrists, who work collaboratively with social workers, oncologists and nurses. They are available to discuss options of interventions, including medications and psychotherapy (counseling or “talk therapy”), support groups and peer to peer support.

Appointments with the LCI psychiatrists are made by the Clinical Social Workers. The social worker will contact the patient upon referral to complete a psychosocial assessment and if appropriate, schedule appointment with psychiatrist. LCI psychiatric services are available for LCI patients who are receiving active treatment or are post treatment. The social worker completing the assessment will make recommendations for appropriate psychosocial supports that may include referrals outside of the LCI psychiatric service.

Cardio-Oncology Program The Cardio-Oncology Program: • Evaluates and treats the cardiac complications of cancer and its therapy • Participates in the management of patients with coexisting cardiac disease and cancer • Provide pretreatment cardiac risk assessment • Provide survivors with appropriate cardiac care.

Ostomy Program The Ostomy Program is designed for patients who have undergone ostomy procedures, often due to colon or bladder cancers.

The Ostomy Center provides: • Pre-operative counseling for patients who are to undergo creation of an ileostomy, colostomy, urostomy, or continent diversion. Family members are included in these discussions • Pre-operative stoma marking to identify the most appropriate location on your abdomen for your ostomy placement • Post-surgery follow-up for stoma assessment, ostomy appliance evaluation and continued instruction in stoma and skin care • Evaluation and management of your stoma and surrounding skin • Annual stoma and skin assessment of lifelong ostomates for changes that may occur with weight loss or gain, or as a result of aging • Evaluation and treatment of skin rashes, ulcers or wounds that may occur around the stoma • Fitting of hernia/ostomy support binders • Creation of customized ostomy appliances for challenging stomas • Instruction in colostomy irrigation • Guidance in obtaining your ostomy supplies A physician’s referral is required. Genetic Testing Two programs exist through Lifespan: the Cancer Genetics Program and the Women’s Genetic Counseling Program. Both programs provide counseling and testing for people at risk for cancer.

Cancer Genetics Program The Cancer Genetics Program provides counseling and testing for people at risk for hereditary cancer syndrome. The program is only for family members of current or past patients who received care through Lifespan Cancer Institute.

Sexual Health and Reproduction Programs Sexual Health First Responders Clinic at Lifespan Cancer Institute The Sexual Health First Responders Clinic addresses sexual intimacy issues experienced by both men and women. The initial appointment involves a comprehensive intake and physical exam. It provides patients with a safe space to discuss sexual health concerns.

Men’s Sexual Health The Men’s Health Center at The Miriam Hospital provides specialized care for men who have issues with sexual performance that are often side effects of prostate or testicular cancer.

Conditions can include: • Erectile Dysfunction (ED) • Low testosterone (Low T) • Low sexual desire • Delayed or absent ejaculation To combat ED, the Men’s Health Center also offers a specific program called penile rehabilitation. The program is designed to help men experience normal erections again.

Women’s Intimacy and Sexual Health (WISH) Center at Women and Infants The WISH Center offers help to patients dealing with sexual intimacy issues. Problem addressed include: • Vaginal dryness, itching or burning • Pain during intercourse • Decreased desire or less pleasure during intercourse • Changes in body image as a result of surgery or effect of treatment A referral is required. Fertility Center at Women and Infants Women and Infants offers fertility options for current cancer patients, both men and women, who may be diagnosed with cancers that might affect fertility. They also offer fertility advice and help for cancer survivors who may be trying to start a family.

Fertility Preservation: This program at Women and Infants’ Fertility Center is dedicated to helping patients retain fertility often through freezing and storing eggs, embryos or sperm for future in vitro fertilization.

For men or women who have become infertile due to cancer treatments and did not preserve eggs, sperm or embryos still have options for having families, including: o Using donor eggs, embryos or sperm to conceive o Using surrogacy o Adopting a child Dr. Eden Cardozo specializes in fertility preservation for cancer patients. Acupuncture Acupuncture has helped patients with symptoms such as headaches, back pain, neck pain, nausea, anxiety and other side effects of medication.

This service is free and offered through the Lifespan Cancer Institute to current patients while they are receiving treatment. Patients can speak with their oncologists or call 844-222-2881 and ask to speak with someone regarding acupuncture.

If patients are no longer receiving care at Lifespan Cancer Institute, acupuncture is offered through the Lifestyle Medicine Center at the Women’s Medicine Collaborative. Appointments can be scheduled on Wednesday from 9-12pm and are led by Mariah Stump, DC. Please call 401-793-7817 for more information.

Massage Therapy For patients undergoing treatment at Rhode Island Hospital, massage therapists offer seated massages, reflexology (an acupressure and massage technique for the hands and feet), and therapeutic touch, which balances and promotes the flow of energy through touch.

Benefits include: • Relief of tension and stress • Increased circulation • Decreased pain and stiffness • Increased energy and alertness This service is free and offered through the Lifespan Cancer Institute to current patients while they are receiving treatment. Patients can speak with their oncologists or call 844-222-2881 and ask to speak with someone regarding acupuncture.

If patients are no longer receiving care at Lifespan Cancer Institute, massage therapy is offered through the Lifestyle Medicine Center at the Women’s Medicine Collaborative.

Massages are offered by a licensed massage therapist, Cheryl McGuinness, LMT, and appointments are available Monday afternoons. The cost is $40 for a 30-min session or $70 for an hour. Patients can call 401-793-7817 to make an appointment.

Reiki Reiki is a stress relief technique offered to cancer patients currently undergoing treatment at Lifespan. The twenty to thirty minute sessions are offered before, during and after clinical treatments. A trained practitioner performs the technique with a light touch: he or she may place hands gently on or slightly above the body. During sessions, soft music is played to increase the patient's relaxation.

Integrative Health and Wellness Programs This service is free and offered through the Lifespan Cancer Institute to current patients while they are receiving treatment. Patients can speak with their oncologists for more information.

Pet Therapy Visiting with animals can help patients feel relaxed and at ease. Pets, specially trained to interact with patients, can be found at the center on Thursday and Friday mornings for patients currently undergoing treatment.

Chiropractic Care Chiropractic care has helped patients with low back pain, neck pain and headaches, hip and leg pain, and lower and upper extremity pain. The program at Lifespan is led by Camilla Moore, DC, ART, SFMA. Support Groups For everyone The LIVESTRONG Cancer Survivorship Program The YMCA offers a 12-week physical activity program designed specifically for survivors.

Survivors participate in free or low cost customized exercise regimens catered to their individual needs from certified fitness instructors. The instructors are trained in cancer survivorship, post-rehabilitation exercise and supportive cancer care.

Support Groups Young Women’s Breast Cancer Program The Young Women’s Breast Cancer Program is for women 42 years old and younger who are living with or have survived breast cancer, and who may still be receiving treatment.

This program is headed by Dr. Mary Lopresti and aims to provide various workshops, lectures, and group discussions on issues relevant to young breast cancer patients, including sexuality, exercise, decreasing risk of cancer, and stress reduction.

For men Men’s Cancer Wellness Group This group is a forum for men who have been diagnosed with prostate, bladder, testicular, penile or renal cancer. The group is run by a licensed clinical social worker, Kathy Higginbotham, and aims at providing psychosocial support for participants through treatment and recovery.

Financial Resources

Financial Resources Federal/State Financial Assistance: Temporary Disability Income (TDI): Temporary Disability Income is available through the state of Rhode Island. A patient must work in RI to qualify for this benefit. This benefit provides benefit payments to insured Rhode Island workers for unemployment caused by a temporary disability/injury. The maximum amount of time individuals can collect TDI benefits is 30 weeks. For more information, patients can visit: www.dlt.ri.gov/tdi/ Social Security Disability (SSDI/SSI): The Social Security and Supplemental Security Income disability programs are the largest of several Federal programs that provides assistance to people with disabilities. While these two programs are different in many ways, both are administered by the Social Security Administration and only individuals who have a disability and meet medical criteria may qualify for benefits under either program.

Social Security Disability Insurance: pays benefits to you and certain family members if you are “insured,� meaning that you worked long enough and paid Social Security taxes.

Supplemental Security Income: pays benefits based on financial need.

Both programs require patients to have a disability that is expected to last one year. Patients can apply on-line at www.socialsecurity.gov , or in person at their local SSA office, or via phone at 1-800-772-1213.

Grants: Joe Andruzzi Grant The Joe Andruzzi Grant is available for eligible cancer patients in treatment greater than 60 days. Patients must be in active treatment. Grants can be used for any non-medical bills/services. Referrals must be made by your social worker/supported provider.

Family Reach Family Reach is a grant awarded to patients in active treatment. The household must have a child under 18. There is limited funding available. Social workers at Lifespan can provide a referral.

NOTE: There are other cancer grants available. Many of these grants have limited funds and must meet specific criteria. Social workers at Lifespan will have more information.

Health Insurance: RIREACH: RIREACH helps Rhode Islanders access healthcare or health insurance, including resolving insurance company denials, complications with Healthsoure RI and Medicaid, medical bills, and more. Patients can call 401-270-0101 for more information.

Health Source RI: Health Source RI is a resource that can assist persons 18-64 with obtaining health insurance.

There is an open enrollment period in the Fall. Patients may qualify for benefits outside of open enrollment. They can call Health Source RI at 855-840-4774 or visit healthsourceri.com.

Rhode Island Senior Health Insurance Program (SHIP): Rhode Island Senior Health Insurance Program is part of a national partnership to help consumers make informed health care choices. SHIP volunteers provide one-to-one counseling to seniors, adults with disabilities, families, and caregivers. The program is designed to help seniors and adults with disabilities to understand health care cost and coverage. SHIP counselors can discuss all health insurance options. Community Resources: Community Action Program (CAPS): Community Action Programs (CAPS) are social service agencies working to alleviate the problems of poverty through a positive approach. Programs include consumer education, counseling, health & wellness, home weatherization, and hating assistance. Social workers at Lifespan can provide patients with the agency that covers their area.

Social Service Emergency Line 211: Social Service Emergency Line 211 is a hotline (24/7) run by United Way. Patients can call 21-1 for information and support on health and human service’s needs.

Utility Problems:

Financial Resources If patients have utility problems, they may qualify for protection from a utility shut off if they are disabled or have a serious medical condition. They can request the forms from their utility provider or a social worker from the LCI. The George Wiley Center also assists. They can be reached at 401-728-5555.

Housing/Tenant Resources: Housing Network RI provides homebuyer education programs, foreclosure prevention, and loan scam alert information. Any questions on down payment and closing-cost assistance program. Patients can call for further assistance at 401-721-5680.

Transportation Resources: American Cancer Society Road to Recovery: Patient must be traveling to an appointment required to being or complete cancer treatment or to an appointment for complementary therapy during cancer treatment. Transportation cannot be provided for follow up appointments after treatment has been completed. Patient must be able to walk unassisted to and from the vehicle or have an accompanying caregiver to assist.

Logisticare: Logisticare provides transportation for patients that are Medicaid recipients and/or elderly individuals age 60 and older. Rides must be booked 48 hours prior to the appointment.

ADA-Ride: ADA-Ride provides transportation for persons with disabilities who are unable due to their disability to use a regular fixed route RIPTA bus.
