Interventional Cardiology

Interventional cardiologists at the Lifespan Cardiovascular Institute of Rhode Island, The Miriam and Newport hospitals offer a breadth of high-quality services unique in our area. Our expert physicians perform the Northeast’s highest volume of emergency percutaneous coronary interventions for STEMI (ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction). We collaborate with technicians, nurses, advanced practice providers and other specialists to provide comprehensive, collaborative care to patients.

We specialize in: • Diagnosis and medical treatment of patients with cardiac and vascular disease.

• Interpretation of noninvasive cardiac and vascular studies (e.g., ultrasound, CT, MR, PET).

• Invasive cardiac and vascular diagnostic procedures.

• Routine and complex PCI, including for chronic total occlusion.

• Outpatient venous ablation procedures for patients with symptomatic, medically-refractory venous insufficiency.

• Vascular intervention for peripheral artery disease in patients with claudication, critical limb ischemia (CLI) and acute limb ischemia (ALI), including novel crossing and reentry techniques for chronic total occlusions, and tibiopedal access for procedures not feasible from more traditional vascular access sites. Also, our volumes of carotid artery stenting, an alternative to endarterectomy, are among the highest in the nation and we are now performing transcarotid artery revascularization (TCAR), a hybrid surgicalendovascular procedure for carotid stenosis.

• Vascular intervention to prevent and treat venous thromboembolism (VTE), including inferior vena cava (IVC) filter placement and retrieval, and catheter-directed therapies for deep venous thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE).

• Endovascular aortic repair (EVAR), a mini-

mally invasive catheter-based technique used to prevent aneurysm rupture in patients with abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA).

• Transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) to treat severe aortic stenosis. A nonsurgical procedure in which the replacement valve is fed through a catheter inserted through the thigh or chest, TAVR is appropriate for patients at high or intermediate risk with open heart surgery and we are enrolling low-risk patients in clinical trials. TAVR is performed in a state-of-the-art hybrid operating room – a cardiac catheterization laboratory located within an operating room.

• MitraClip is a new catheter-based technology for patients with severe symptomatic degenerative mitral regurgitation who are considered at high risk for surgical mitral valve repair or replacement.

A permanent implant that attaches to the mitral valve leaflets, it results in a double

opening of the mitral valve, allowing improved closure of the valve. MitraClip is fed through a catheter inserted in the femoral vein.

• Patent foramen ovale (PFO) closure for patients with recurrent cryptogenic stroke, or coronary or peripheral embolism despite appropriate medical therapy. A catheter-based device is deployed across the intra-atrial septum to permanently eliminate shunting of blood flow from the right to the left side of the heart.

• Left atrial appendage (LAA) occlusion to prevent stroke in patients with atrial fibrillation that is not related to heart valve disease who have a significant risk of stroke, and who are candidates for blood thinners but in whom a non-drug alternative is appropriate. The LAA is excluded from the left atrium using catheter-based means so as to eliminate the source of stroke-causing blood clots.

Our Facilities Our facilities include: • Four catheterization labs each at Rhode Island Hospital and The Miriam Hospital for performing cardiac and vascular procedures; • Two hybrid operating rooms at Rhode Island Hospital; • A 16-bed procedural care unit at The Miriam Hospital; • Noninvasive echo and vascular laboratories. Many patients who undergo interventional cardiology procedures are eligible for same-day discharge.

Research Research conducted by our physicians includes the investigation of new preventive medical therapies, balloons, stents and other interventional devices for coronary and noncoronary vascular disease and structural heart disease; adjunctive pharmacologic therapies for acute coronary syndromes; and new therapies to improve the treatment of heart failure and cardiogenic shock.

Our Physicians Herbert Aronow, MD, MPH is an interventional Cardiologist and Director of Interventional Cardiology at the Lifespan Cardiovascular Institute and Director of the Cardiac Catheterization Laboratories at Rhode Island and The Miriam hospitals. He is the Arnold T. Galkin Clinical Professor in Cardiology at The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University. He has expertise in the diagnosis and interventional treatment of coronary and vascular disease.

Dr. Aronow earned a medical degree from the University of Michigan Medical School and a master’s degree in epidemiology from the University of Michigan School of Public Health in Ann Arbor. He completed his residency at the University of Michigan Medical Center, and fellowships in cardiovascular medicine and interventional cardiology at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation in Cleveland, Ohio. Aronow is board certified in cardiovascular disease, interventional cardiology, vascular medicine

and endovascular medicine. He is past chair of the ACC Peripheral Vascular Disease Section, Secretary of the Society for Vascular Medicine Board of Trustees and Trustee of the Society for Cardiovascular Angiography and Interventions.

J. Dawn Abbott, MD is an interventional cardiologist with expertise in coronary and endovascular intervention, complex coronary disease and consultative cardiology. She is an associate professor of medicine and director of the interventional cardiology fellowship training program at The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University.

Dr. Abbott received a medical degree from the University of Chicago-Pritzker School of Medicine in Chicago. She completed a residency in internal medicine at Yale-New Haven Hospital and fellowships in cardiovascular diseases and interventional cardiology at Yale University School of Medicine in New Haven. She is board certi-

fied in internal medicine, cardiovascular disease, and interventional cardiology.

She is an associate editor of circulation for Cardiovascular Interventions.

Douglas Burtt, MD is a cardiologist with expertise in consultative cardiology and invasive/interventional catheterization. He is also a clinical assistant professor of medicine at The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University, where he is course director for cardiac physiology and pathophysiology.

Dr. Burtt received his medical degree from New York University School of Medicine in New York and completed his residency at Roger Williams General Hospital and Brown Medical School in Providence. He completed a fellowship in cardiovascular diseases at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center in Worcester and is board certified in internal medicine, cardiovascular disease, and interventional cardiology.

Paul Gordon, MD is a cardiologist with expertise in consultative cardiology, structural heart intervention including TAVR, and invasive/interventional catheterization. He is also a clinical associate professor of medicine at The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University.

Dr. Gordon earned his medical degree from Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons in New York and completed his residency in internal medicine, a clinical fellowship in cardiology, and a fellowship in interventional cardiology at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston. He is board certified in internal medicine, cardiovascular disease, and interventional cardiology.

Omar Hyder, MD is a cardiologist with expertise in consultative cardiology and the treatment of complex coronary and peripheral artery disease. He is a Clinical Assistant Professor at The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University where

he received his medical degree and completed a year of electrophysiology and basic science research. Dr. Hyder completed his internal medicine residency, general and interventional cardiology fellowships and an advanced fellowship in vascular medicine and endovascular intervention at Rhode Island and The Miriam hospitals.

Shafiq Mamdani, MD is a cardiologist with expertise in general, consultative and interventional cardiology as well as vascular and endovascular medicine and intervention. He is a clinical assistant professor of medicine at The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University.

George R. McKendall, MD is a cardiologist with expertise in consultative cardiology and interventional cardiology. He is also an associate professor of medicine at The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University.

Dr. Mamdani received his medical degree from the Medical College of Georgia and completed residency training at Brown University School of Medicine. He completed fellowship training in cardiovascular medicine at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston and the Texas Medical Center, followed by a postgraduate fellowship in interventional

He completed a general and an interventional cardiology fellowship at Rhode Island Hospital and Brown University. He is board certified in internal medicine, cardiovascular disease, and interventional cardiology.

Barry L. Sharaf, MD is an interventional cardiologist and associate professor of medicine at The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University. Much of his clinical activity is focused on percutaneous, catheter-based interventions for patients with valvular and other forms of structural heart disease. He also has expertise in consultative cardiology.

Dr. Sharaf received a medical degree from Boston University School of Medicine in Boston, completed his residency in internal medicine at Boston City Hospital, and completed fellowships in cardiology and interventional cardiology at Rhode Island Hospital. He is board certified in internal medicine, cardiovascular disease and interventional cardiology.

Peter A. Soukas, MD is the director of the interventional vascular laboratories at The Miriam and Rhode Island hospitals. He specializes in vascular medicine and intervention. He also has expertise in consultative cardiology. He is an assistant professor of medicine and director of the vascular and endovascular medicine fellowship program at The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University.

Dr. Soukas received a medical degree from Tufts University School of Medicine in Boston and completed his internship and residency at Pennsylvania Hospital in Philadelphia. He completed cardiology and peripheral vascular medicine fellowships at St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center in Boston and an interventional cardiology fellowship at the University of Michigan Medical Center in Ann Arbor. He is board certified in internal medicine, cardiovascular disease, interventional cardiology, vascular medicine, and endovascular medicine and is certified in noninvasive vascular lab interpretation.
