A newsletter from the Center for Bariatric Surgery THE IMPACT OF HIGH VISCERAL FAT

As we gain weight our waistline starts to grow and with that so do our health risks. Fat is important because it protects our organs and regulates our body temperature but storing too much fat on our body can be dangerous. Visceral fat, or abdominal fat, lies inside our abdominal cavity wrapping and padding our internal organs. While visceral fat can be seen and measured, it cannot be pinched; the fat you can pinch is subcutaneous fat. Excess visceral fat is linked to higher total cholesterol and LDL (bad) cholesterol, lower HDL (good) cholesterol, a higher risk of type 2 diabetes, insulin resistance and heart disease. It can be hard to judge how much visceral fat you have but generally having a waistline greater than 40 inches for men and 35 inches for women indicates you are carrying too much abdominal fat. But there is good news-visceral fat can be reduced with exercise and diet.

Follow these tips to help you lose excess visceral fat: 1. Avoid added sugar and sugar-sweetened beverages. Excess sugar consumption has been shown to increase the accumulation of abdominal fat.

2. Eat enough lean proteins that are low in saturated fat.

3. Eat plenty of fruits, vegetables and whole grains (complex carbohydrates).

Studies have found that diets with a lower glycemic load helps reduce fat in the belly and around the organs.

4. Eat foods rich in soluble fiber such as flaxseeds, sweet potatoes, legumes and grains. Soluble fibers can help reduce belly fat by suppressing your appetite.

5. Limit alcohol intake. Drinking too much or even moderate amounts of alcohol may encourage fat to be stored in your belly.

6. Do more aerobic exercises. Engaging in aerobic exercises such as a brisk walk, jogging or swimming can be very effective in reducing abdominal fat.

FEATURED RECIPE OF THE MONTH Almond Butter Energy Bites Adapted from www.eatgood4life.com

Ingredients Needed: • 1 cup almond butter (or any butter of choice, like peanut butter) • 1 cup medjol dates, pitted • 2 scoops protein powder • 1 cup rolled oats • 1/3 cup water

Instructions: 1. Place all the ingredients, except rolled oats, in your food processor and pulse until combined. Add the rolled oats and combine until you obtain a dough consistency mixture.

If you find that the mixture is too dried you can add a few more tablespoons of water.

Roll small pieces of dough into little round bites and store in the refrigerator in a glass container for up to 1 week.

This is a great quick and easy but nutritious recipe. Feel free to add or omit ingredients to create your own energy bites!
