A newsletter from the Center for Bariatric Surgery Obesity May Mask Malnutrition Very often we mistake an abundance of food or calories for proper nutrition. As a result, many overweight or obese people are overfed but undernourished. Results from a recent small study by researchers at Johns Hopkins show many obese people may be malnourished before they undergo bariatric surgery. The findings, published this year in the journal Obesity Surgery, concludes that correcting nutritional deficiencies before surgery would likely prevent surgery-induced malnutrition. The study assessed 58 patients between the ages of 18-65 who were scheduled to undergo bariatric surgery and found the most prevalent nutritional deficiencies were iron ( found in 36 percent of patients assessed) and vitamin D (found in 71 percent of patients assessed). These results are consistent with findings from other studies. For comparison, the average rate of iron deficiency in the general American population is 2 percent for men and 9 percent for women; the average rate of vitamin D deficiency in the general American population is 42 percent. It’s important to add that increased adipose tissue as a result of being overweight/obese may also lead to lower serum levels of vitamin D.

Nutritional deficiencies, especially vitamin D, may lead to problems such as inflammation, higher infection risk and delayed wound healing. Therefore, correcting these deficiencies early on is important for patients before bariatric surgery. To prevent or improve nutritional deficiencies, focus on the nutritional quality of your foods rather than solely focusing on calories. Look for valuable elements on the nutrition facts label such as fiber, protein, vitamins/minerals, heart healthy fats (monounsaturated and polyunsaturated) and low amounts of added sugar. If you already have a nutritional deficiency you will require dose supplementation to bring levels within a normal range. But remember that supplements are meant to complement your diet. A balanced, nutritious diet is still the best way to prevent nutritional deficiencies.

FEATURED RECIPE OF THE MONTH Pumpkin Pie Overnight Oats Adapted from www.asweetpeachef.com

Ingredients Needed: • 1/2 cup rolled oats, uncooked • 1/2 cup unsweetened almond milk • 2 tbsp plain greek yogurt • 1/4 cup pumpkin puree • 1 tbsp chia seeds • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract • 3/4 tsp ground cinnamon • 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg • stevia, to taste (or no-calorie sweetener of choice) • Toppings: chopped pecans, pepitas, and/or cinnamon Instructions: 1. Combine the rolled oats, unsweetened almond milk, plain greek yogurt, pumpkin puree, chia seeds, stevia, vanilla extract, ground cinnamon, ground nutmeg, and stir to combine.

2. Seal the container (mason jars work great) or cover with plastic wrap.

3. Place in fridge for 4-6 hours, preferably overnight.

4. Overnight oats can be eaten cold or reheated in microwave for 1-2 minutes if you prefer it heated.

5. When you’re ready to eat, just top with crushed pecans and cinnamon.

Just one cup of this recipe provides 11 grams of protein and 11 grams of fiber. It’s also a great source of iron, vitamin A, calcium and heart healthy fats.
