WHAT WAS YOUR INSPIRATION BEHIND THE STYLING FOR THIS PARTY SHOOT?

I chose to capture the dark & mature feel of Disney’s liveaction film series Descendants without the styling being overtly Disney. I wanted the colours & textures to suit the pre-teen audience, with subtle props playing homage to the Disney characters upon which the film series is based. WHAT WERE SOME OF THE UNIQUE FEATURES OF THIS SETUP?

The 3D arch, geometric cake plinth & the black cookie ‘wall’ tree were key pieces I commissioned for this theme & formed the base for acrylic signage & Maleficent silhouette mirror – the lead villain in the film series. The black cookie ‘wall’ tree was used to hang apple cookies & fairy floss baubles with gold card vine acescents as a nod to the Descendants apple. Invitations & a keepsake acrylic handheld mirror, complete with apple, were a nod to the Evil Queens mirror. Other unique features were a custom illustration of the Birthday girl, dressed as lead character Mal, individual chocolate bombs, complete with gold heart mirror & red roses and foil apple plates paired with gold tableware. The cake was a feat of engineering, with Mal’s spell book & Descendants apple, featuring the Birthday girls initial, balancing on octopus tentacles to represent Uma, the daughter of Ursula, rising from the ocean. Uma was also the inspiration behind the black ball pit and octopus floor vinyl. Other entertainment included a glitter tattoo station, with stencils custom made to suit the theme, a black jumping castle, & a build-a-bear activity which, whilst not on-theme, was a specific request of the Birthday girl. You don’t need to include the obvious Disney graphics to execute a theme. By sticking with a well chosen colour palette & a key element, in this case the apple, you can achieve a cohesive theme which isn’t overtly Disney.
