Through LifeScape’s residential services and supported employment programs, Alex has become a very independent young man. He has had the opportunity to work at HyVee for several years and takes great pride in his work. “I like working at HyVee because you get to see the customers, say hello and have a great day, and then they smile back,” says Alex. He is truly the definition of a “helpful smile in every aisle,” as he bags groceries, loads them in the drive-up, and assists customers with their various needs.
Alex is your typical 23 year-old – he lives in his own apartment, has a great job, attends concerts, and is a fan of the San Francisco 49ers!

“The future belongs to those who see possibilities before they become obvious.” What a perfect quote to inspire us to look towards the future! As LifeScape prepares to celebrate its first anniversary on April 1st, we are also beginning the process of creating a strategic plan – a roadmap for our future. We will challenge ourselves to see all the possibilities of the future. As our vision statement says “LifeScape will be responsive, innovative, and dynamic in developing and delivering services to ignite life-changing opportunities.” We must continually look “outside the box” and stretch ourselves to move before we are pushed…..to lead, not be lead. We must consider not only the needs of the children and adults that we currently serve, but also what those needs may be five years from now. Who might need our supports tomorrow that we aren’t serving today? What are the trends in our industry and how can we be innovative and responsive to those trends? How can we continue to raise the bar a little higher each time we reach a milestone or experience success? These will be some of the questions guiding us in our planning. We look forward to this important step for LifeScape. This Annual Report Edition of The Journey is a celebration of accomplishments – of the children and adults we support, and their families. It’s an opportunity to thank our donors who have wholeheartedly embraced the mission of LifeScape through their giving of time, talents, and resources. It’s a celebration of our employees who demonstrate our values – Integrity, Compassion, Fiscal Responsibility, Collaborative Relationships, and Excellence – day in and day out through their actions and commitment to making a difference in the lives of the people we support. Your support during our first year is beyond imagination. Saying “thank you” doesn’t express our heartfelt gratitude for each and every one of you. During this year, we’ve experienced rewards beyond our expectations. Cover Story (continued) His teacher, Emily Anderson, says Tanner works hard in school, and is trying out vocational skills in the LifeScape PAES© (Practical Assessment Exploration System) Lab. “He really enjoys ‘putting in’ tasks, as well as assembly and disassembly of nuts and bolts,” says Emily. Tanner now enjoys listening to music, coloring, and painting. He is also involved with bowling and basketball skills in Special Olympics. With funds provided by the LifeScape Ambassadors, he and peers have attended a Minnesota Twins baseball game, the Winner Elks Rodeo fundraiser for LifeScape, and recently—a monster truck show. “The staff is all so wonderful with him,” says Nancy. “I’m so happy he’s in a place he can get the one-on-one attention he needs, because that’s where he’s going to make progress.” Tanner’s interdisciplinary team at LifeScape makes sure of that. It’s where the phrase, “many strengths, one mission,” is so meaningful—the “one mission” for each person’s team is to help that person thrive.

Meanwhile, Nancy has been able to return to work full-time, and assist her husband Kevin, a disabled veteran, with his lawn and snow removal business. She can sleep soundly, knowing Tanner is safe. Thirteen-year-old Abby and 11-year-old Cooper can have friends visit, and have parents who can attend their events. LifeScape has provided the help their family needed. “You have to do what is best for your child,” says Nancy, “whether it’s trying a different doctor or a different school, or taking your son/daughter for a "ride" at 2 a.m., even if you can hardly hold your eyes open. They are worth every penny and all the energy you put into caring for them, because this is your child. It can be a challenge, but you can't give up on them, because they depend on you. I can’t imagine my life without Tanner.”

Jessica B. Wells Foundation President This issue of The Journey is full of gratitude for the many gifts of time, talent and resources you have shared with LifeScape and the LifeScape Foundation. We give you our many thanks and gratitude because we know we could not serve our mission without you beside us.
Team Tanner won the prize for most registered walkers. High emotions and new records ruled the day at the 21st annual Mall Walk on February 7th at the Empire Mall in Sioux Falls. At the end of the day, the gathering of over 1,000 fired-up people raised a record-breaking $110,000, This year’s MallWalk was dedicated to with contributions still the memory of Gail coming in. Hosted by the LifeScape Ambassadors, all funds will go to purchase Needs and Dreams Wish List items such as for therapy equipment, curriculum, workplace supports, household needs, and other expenses not covered by other funding sources. The walkathon was dedicated to the memory of Gail Fellbaum, who was a top fundraiser at the event for the past several years. For those who knew and loved Gail, it was bittersweet—sadness that she wasn’t there with half of her hometown of Webster, SD, who showed up in her honor, and joy for the legacy she left for the little boy she visited regularly at LifeScape, and the others supported by the organization.
Gail’s son Gary Fellbaum was the top individual fundraiser with an incredible $8,030. His team, Groovin’ for Gail, also was the top fundraising team, going door-to-door in Webster, holding a raffle and other events to raise another $8,299. The number two individual fundraiser was Jeff Horstmeyer, with $4,386. The tradition continues for this duo – Jeff and Erin Horstmeyer walking and rolling in memory of their son Samuel John. We’d also like to honor Erin and Jeff for their team total coming in at $8,265. The friends and family support of Horstmeyer’s “Smiley Goats” team continues to inspire us all. The number three individual fundraiser, AND the team with the most walkers was Tanner Aeschlimann’s 89-member “Team Tanner.” Thanks also to Tanner and his parents, Chad and Dr. Laura Aeschlimann for appearing in our TV spot to promote the event this year. Congratulations to Melissa Carrier-Damon on winning the drawing of team captains – Melissa’s team raised over $2,515 to qualify, and she earned a $150 gift certificate to Scheels. Thanks to everyone who participated in this heartwarming and very important event—and we’ll see you next year on February 6th!

New Vision for Playground Creates Therapeutic Space for Learning & Play If you drive by the LifeScape Specialty School on 26th Street in Sioux Falls, it sounds just like any other schoolyard with laughter, noisy games and the rhythmic squeak of swings. Children enjoy endless opportunity for movement and imagination in this important space, growing and developing as they play. They learn a love of nature and friendship among the games of tag, basketball, slides and swings. One woman who understood the importance of this space was LaVaune Wetmore. LaVaune and her husband, Charles, had encountered LifeScape (then Crippled Children’s Hospital & School) during the 1960’s when Dr. Guy VanDemark treated their son, Mark. LaVaune and Charles, who passed away in 2003, never forgot what it was like to be parents concerned for their child. For many years they wanted to return the favor in some way. When LaVaune and her son, Mark, visited LifeScape (then Children’s Care Hospital & School) in 2007, LaVaune decided the playground would be a fitting way to help. LaVaune established the LaVaune Wetmore Playground Endowment to help meet ongoing needs for maintenance and replacement of playground equipment. The 26-year-old playground has seen hundreds of children climb the stairs, wheel up the ramps and experience butterflies in their stomachs riding down the slides. Time, weather and daily use have taken their toll on the structures and accessible rubber surfacing. LaVaune’s endowment helps ensure that the school will always have a fully accessible, safe space for children to enjoy the outdoors.
In December we said goodbye to LaVaune. She was 100 years young when she passed away, still of strong mind, firm in her belief that outdoor play was crucial to a happy childhood. We thank LaVaune and her family for their generosity in meeting the maintenance needs of the playground, and we will never forget her visionary commitment to the children at LifeScape.
When LaVaune Wetmore and her son, Mark, visited Children’s Care in 2007, she decided to provide for the playground with a planned gift.
We invite you to join LaVaune and her family in supporting this special space. In addition to the annual funds available from LaVaune’s generous gift, $200,000 in additional funds are needed over the next two years to provide necessary updates to the playground structures and surfacing. Physical therapists and the adapted PE teacher have identified the updates that will allow for recreation as well as enhanced space for children and young adults to progress on their therapy goals. With support from more individuals like LaVaune and her family, the students at LifeScape can have an optimal space for growing and developing as they play in the beautiful outdoors.

2015 LifeScape Foundation Budgeted Expenses Total: $3,328,598 Of the total expenses $1,636,334 is a distribution to the service provider LifeScape. This amount is determined by the LifeScape Foundation’s spending policy of distributing 4% of the 16-quarter-rolling average of the endowment’s market value. The policy protects the endowment from inflation, provides for endowment growth, and makes possible a distribution amount for program support. The sale of investments, realized positive market gains over time, and above budget revenues have allowed for a distribution that is above planned budgeted revenues.
