From Our Chief Executive Officer
Anne Rieck McFarland Chief Executive Officer
Synergy – the bonus that occurs when things work together harmoniously. – Mark Twain Twenty-two months. Almost two years. Whatever way you look at it, it’s quite amazing how much time has passed since we became LifeScape! When we were exploring the possibility of an affiliation back in 2013, we came up with several synergies that we hoped would be accomplished by the joining of two great organizations. Recently, I was thinking about those synergies and realized that we are truly beginning to see them come to fruition. What an amazing feeling! The organization is “settling in”—meaning we are feeling our groove. As a result, best practices are emerging, new services are being offered, teams are working together and supporting one another, strategic initiatives are being addressed, the children and adults we work for are doing well, and more opportunities for learning and increased independence are occurring.
James C. Hanson Legacy Continues to Change Lives
When former LifeScape President and CEO James C. Hanson tragically died of cancer more than 20 years ago, he left behind a legacy that continues to change lives today. Under his direction at LifeScape (then Sioux Vocational Services), many who had been living in institutions or elsewhere in the community began to learn skills they would need to live more independently—and to move into their own homes or apartments. Eileen Van Soest, current LifeScape Foundation Board member and former Vice President of Services, recalls how much that independence meant to people such as Jan Giebink, an adult supported by LifeScape. “I’ll never forget it. When I handed Jan the key to her own home, she said to me, ‘My house.’ She said it very clearly. She absolutely understood the difference.” Hanson wanted everyone to have that opportunity. He spoke to his wife and family about setting up a fund that would provide financial assistance for people who needed a little help making the move—a rental deposit, a first month’s payment, home modifications—whatever they needed to get started. The family set up the James C. Hanson Memorial Fund to help carry Hanson’s vision forward.
Hal Schwartz and Kayla Ackerman have benefited from the James C. Hanson Fund.
“It was so insightful,” recalls current LifeScape CEO Anne Rieck McFarland, who worked with Hanson at the time. “The fund’s purpose drills right down to who we are as human beings—to be able to make these choices for ourselves.” In 20 years since Hanson’s death, countless friends and supporters have contributed to the memorial fund. In 2015 alone, over $25,000 in funding requests have been granted to adults supported at LifeScape who need assistance related to housing. Hal Schwartz, an adult supported by LifeScape, can testify to what a difference that independence makes in his life. “Before, I lived with too many other people. Now I live in my own apartment with Kayla [my girlfriend], and it’s going really good. I get to do a lot more things.” If you are interested in learning more about the James C. Hanson Memorial Fund, or in finding out how you can contribute, please contact the Foundation office at (605) 444-9800, or at giving@LifeScapeSD.org.
Breaking Barriers through LifeScape’s Center for the Arts
I couldn’t be more proud of our staff, board of directors, donors, state partners, and community, or of the children, adults, and families that we support! We would not have come this far without everyone’s hard work, dedication, vision, and commitment to the mission of empowering children and adults with disabilities to lead fulfilling lives. We have more hard work ahead. But, I expect that down the road, when we are approaching our 3rd or 4th or 5th anniversary as LifeScape and reflecting upon our journey, the list of synergies accomplished will be even longer.
With gratitude,
The Cast of “You Look Marvelous” on stage at Augustana University’s Edith Mortensen Theatre in Sioux Falls.

“Mom, I’ve got this.” With that, 17-year-old Dalton Foster let his mom know that all would be well with his acting debut in “You Look Marvelous,” a retelling of “The Emperor’s New Clothes.” Dalton, who has Down syndrome, played the lead role. The play was staged by Dakota Players, an outreach children’s theatre company of the Black Hills Playhouse, and the LifeScape Center for the Arts. Children and youth of all abilities hit the stage for the sold-out show on January 29. Deb Workman, Managing Director of Dakota Players, loves having the opportunity to challenge the perceptions of the audience. Jamie Richardson, Project Coordinator for the LifeScape Center for the Arts, dreams of the day that people of all abilities can routinely win roles in theatre productions outside of LifeScape. For both women, the arts break down barriers and provide unmatched opportunities to build self-confidence and forge relationships in the community. Next, the Center for the Arts and Dakota Players will team up with Augustana University’s Theatre Department and DAPA (Dakota Academy of Performing Arts) to produce “The Wizard of Oz” for three performances on July 15 and 16. Watch for details at LifeScapeSD.org. The Center for the Arts is supported through fundraising efforts such as Mall Walk and TableScapes events, grants and individual donations.

From Our Foundation President
Community Partner: Henry Carlson Construction There from the Beginning It’s hard to imagine what South Dakota would look like if Henry Carlson Construction Company had never existed. Hundreds of iconic buildings all over the state have been built by the Sioux Falls-based company, including LifeScape’s Children’s Services building on 26th Street, built in 1951-52. They were called back to build the additions in 1958, 1982, and 1999-2000, and also constructed a wing on the LifeScape Adult Services building on Western Avenue in 1988. The company was established in 1915 by Swedish immigrant Henry Carlson, Senior. His wife, Anna, an avid gardener, donated an onsite greenhouse for children’s services, which is still in use today. Their son, Henry Junior, along with his wife, Eleanor, have been long-time supporters. They established a fund to support education and training for staff. “People are the most important part of an organization,” says Henry. “You have to have capable people. The material things don’t matter.” The fund was established in 2007 after their granddaughter Anna was diagnosed with leukemia, and they became acutely aware of the difference good training can make in providing excellent care. (Anna is now a completely
healthy young adult, working as a registered nurse. The fund has allowed LifeScape to ensure staff are trained in critical areas, to continue providing cutting-edge services to people with disabilities. Henry and Eleanor’s son Chip took over the company when Henry retired. Chip is now the Chairman of the Board of Directors at LifeScape, after serving on its board for many years. The company has sponsored many fundraising events over the years for the foundation, including Holiday Jam and the Big Cup Golf tournament this past year. A fourth generation of the Carlson family became part of the LifeScape story when Chip’s son Thomas, a professional golfer who now works with Henry Carlson Construction as well, sponsored a team at the Big Cup tournament. LifeScape carries out its mission with the help of many others, and Henry Carlson Construction’s support as a community partner goes back to before ground first broke for the first building, and is stronger than ever today. It’s a great legacy for a great family for a great cause.
Jessica Wells LifeScape Foundation President In fundraising, we work in a world of abundance. That may be contrary to what you hear from most non-profits. Throughout this issue of The Journey, you can see the abundance, and it’s a world you have helped create. There is an abundance of joy in the faces of Hal, Jan and other adults able to live on their own. There’s abundance of confidence and self-worth in the voices of actors Jordan and Jocelyn and their peers radiating from the stage of “You Look Marvelous.” And see the abundance of self-determination, perseverance and satisfaction in the friendly greeting of Alex working his job each day, or Grace learning to pick up a pencil to write her name or drive her wheelchair. When I read through all the names of donors, service clubs, organizations and businesses, I feel an abundance of love, commitment, and loyalty by folks who are a part of something bigger than themselves. Through your support, you ensure these children and adults have the opportunities to feel confident, accepted, believed in, and independent. We also work in a world with an abundance of needs. The need to provide the space, opportunity and artistic direction for children and adults to create through the Center for The Arts impacts communities across the state. School children need a safe place to play and burn some of the energy off so they can concentrate when they return from recess. Children and adults need well-trained, compassionate staff who work with them so closely that they recognize with only a look when something is wrong. Children need occupational, speech and physical therapists who can visit their schools, daycares, and homes so they can gain the skills they need to learn to walk, talk, and play—closer to home and their families. The immense abundance of need and the vision of what the world looks like when those needs aren’t met can be overwhelming. You bring a ray of hope. You shine bright goodness into the dim, gray space of need. Thank you for giving the 2,800 children and adults, their families, friends and staff a reason to focus on the generosity and outpouring of kindness we witness every day at LifeScape. We thank you for making a difference! Continue shining bright – empowering children and adults with disabilities to lead fulfilling lives. Thank you!

Bennett was diagnosed with failure to thrive, and last fall, Dr. Brock Doubledee of Sioux Falls, a pediatric gastroenterologist, referred the Crouch family to LifeScape in Rapid City for an oral motor feeding evaluation. Speech-language pathologist Holly Nordstrom helped him with jaw strength so he could chew effectively, and occupational therapist Sarah Wold-Hanson worked on aversions and other sensory issues Bennett had with food. After just weeks, Bennett was willing to try all types of foods, including fruits and vegetables. “It has seriously changed our world,” says Melissa. “It’s just been fabulous.” At his last check-up, his weight was in the first percentile— the first time he had shown up in the growth chart’s typical range at all. Bennett has now been dismissed from speech therapy, and continues occupational therapy once a week at LifeScape for sensory challenges.
Two-year-old Bennett Crouch of Rapid City is shown being held by his dad, Ken. His mom, Melissa, holds baby brother Everett.
“Sarah is magical with him,” says Melissa.“She’s helping him organize his sensory system—not only food, but noise and social situations. We feel like we’ve gotten our little boy back.”
“The physical process of eating requires the use of 26 muscles and six cranial nerves, making it a more complex activity than walking or talking,” says Johnke. “If parents are struggling with feeding issues with their kids, it’s worth talking to your doctor about getting help.”

Legacy Members
Setting the course for your legacy: Have you taken the time? Planning is a part of life—thinking ahead and making arrangements for big things and little things--what to have for dinner, where to go on vacation, or how we will retire. Surprisingly, one thing many of us don’t do well is plan what will happen to our assets after we have departed this life. Some figures estimate as many as 70% of Americans either have no estate plan, or they’re too out of date to be helpful. Why is this the case? Perhaps we struggle with our own mortality. Or maybe the decisions to be made seem overwhelming, and we just don’t know where to start. This lack of planning, however, can create huge headaches for your loved ones, and often creates conflict in families who are already grieving. Without the proper estate planning, decisions about what happens to all we’ve worked for is taken out of our hands, and decided by the state. Since something needs to be done with your real and personal property after your death, state laws provide a method for dividing it among heirs if you’ve failed to make other arrangements. While these laws are designed to be fair and objective, the resulting
decisions may not be your preferences. That’s why having a written will is critically important. Taking the time now to plan ahead with your family can provide great peace of mind, and can also be very rewarding. It’s a wonderful Linda Wittrock Eidem opportunity to decide Planned Giving Major Gifts Officer your legacy. We hope that when you are doing your estate planning, you’ll consider leaving the LifeScape Foundation a bequest in your will. When you and others leave a portion of your estate to the LifeScape Foundation, you help guarantee we will be able to continue our mission of empowering people with disabilities to lead fulfilling lives. If you have questions or need help getting started, contact Linda Eidem, Planned Giving Major Gifts officer at LifeScape Foundation: (605) 444-9803.
Leave a Legacy Imagine leaving a legacy that will help provide lives of dignity and fulfillment for countless people with disabilities. Through your estate planning, you can make a difference far into the future, while providing tax advantages now for yourself and your family. As you review or write your will, consider including a charitable bequest for the LifeScape Foundation. The assets you provide will be carefully invested, and only the interest is used. In this way, your gift will continue to provide for individuals with special needs indefinitely. Your attorney can advise you on the language to use. It is commonly worded as below:
I give, devise, or bequeath to the LifeScape Foundation, a South Dakota corporation, for its real purposes, all (or a fraction) of the rest, residue, or remainder of my estate whether real or personal. For more information on how you can help those supported by LifeScape—even beyond your lifetime—please call the Foundation office at (605) 444-9800.

2015 LifeScape Foundation Unaudited Expenses Total: $2,176,721 Of the total expenses $1,636,334 is a distribution to the service provider LifeScape. This amount is determined by the LifeScape Foundation’s spending policy of distributing 4% of the 16-quarter-rolling average of the endowment’s market value. The policy protects the endowment from inflation, provides for endowment growth, and makes possible a distribution amount for program support. The sale of investments, realized positive market gains over time, and above budget revenues have allowed for a distribution that is above planned budgeted revenues.

Santa and his ABATE friends visited the children, bringing generous gifts to all. Every year generous families, friends, churches, service clubs, and other groups volunteer or offer financial support and gifts to help the children and adults we serve. Sometimes this outpouring of kindness and generosity provides needed equipment and supplies, and other times it provides the extras that make LifeScape such a warm and supportive environment. We appreciate it all and THANK YOU for improving the lives of children and adults with disabilities! With this issue of The Journey, we thank all and highlight a few of these groups. Throughout the year, churches, schools, and other groups brighten children’s and adults’ lives by volunteering time: playing games, tutoring, doing yardwork and making fleece blankets are just some of the many ways they add smiles to the day. Groups from SilverStone Group, Daktronics and the town of Dell Rapids took time out to go bowling with adults and children, while another group from Trent continued to host adults every Wednesday throughout the summer so they could enjoy fishing, horseback riding, cooking out, singing and wagon rides. Still others accompanied groups to Skyforce, Canaries and Stampede games or provided music and entertainment: Khartum Temple Pipes & Drums, El Riad Shrine Clowns, Tuba Christmas, SD Wind Quintet, and several caroling groups. Thank you to LifeScape Ambassadors, SF MEPS, Game Fish & Park Fishing Buddies, Garretson families, Sammons Financial Group, Kory Davis Team, First Premier Bankcard, Capitol One, Esurance, Eli Lily, Washington Pavilion, Raven, L.G. Everist Quarry, Therapy Dogs International, Chapter 200, Retreat at Pointers Ridge, O’Gorman High School, Augustana University, FYIP, USD CEC Group, DSU CEC Group, Celebrate Community Church, Embrace Church, St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, Click Rain, and the many others from all over the region for investing your time in the children and adults at LifeScape! Thanksgiving and Christmas were also times of special blessing from others. Santa came with the ABATE group to share glad tidings and gifts. Members from a local FCA group made fleece blankets for children in the residence halls. The Minnehaha Lincoln Republican Women’s Group brought in craft supplies and hosted a Christmas party. Children and adults also received Christmas gifts from individuals throughout the community, as well as from Benton Lutheran Church, Cellular Only, Community Reformed Church, Delaware Reformed Church, First Premier Bank, Great Plains Brokerage, Howalt-McDowell, Midcontinent Communications, LifeScape

Ambassadors, Lloyd Companies, National Association of Women in Construction, Signature Salon, Sioux Falls Cares, Sioux Falls Fire Rescue, Sprenger Midwest, Syverson Tile, TCF Bank, Thrivent, University of South Dakota CEC Group, and Workplace Marketing. Every child and adult at LifeScape had his or her Christmas wish lists fulfilled by these generous donors!
Bella and friends raised money with their lemonade stand. This past year several groups organized their own special fundraisers to support children and adults at LifeScape—including four young LifeScape supporters who organized a lemonade stand! We are so grateful for all of the planning and hard work each group put into these events in addition to their donations. Many thanks to Hamsters USA, East River Electric, Hy-Vee Operation Helpful Smile, Battle of the Birthdays, USD American Medical Association Student Section, Sioux Falls Specialty Hospital, Color Vibe, and Bella and friends. We also thank long-time supporters, the Scottish Rite Foundation and the South Dakota Elks Association. The Scottish Rite champions projects to help children with communication disorders in western South Dakota. The Elks Lodges, BPO Does, Winner Elks Rodeo and South Dakota Elks Association make our Outreach Program possible by providing money to send therapists out to homes, schools, and daycares across South Dakota. No matter the donation – gifts, money, or time, all help empower children and adults with disabilities to lead fulfilling lives. Thank you to every one of these amazing groups, and many more that are not listed. Your support is so very appreciated!
If you, your club, organization, or business is interested in helping people with disabilities by hosting a fundraiser, volunteering, or providing other assistance, please contact the LifeScape Foundation office at 605-444-9800 for a Third Party Fundraising packet or more information.
