Nyberg’s Ace Supports Children & Adults with Disabilities Nyberg’s Ace is a staple in Sioux Falls and the surrounding area. Their commitment to this community is an inspiration to all. Established by Roy Nyberg, this locally owned family store opened in 1958 and has been providing excellent service, fulfilling needs, and helping others ever since.

Steve Watkins Chief Executive Officer Resilience is positive adaptation in the face of significant adversity. In the face of COVID-19, LifeScape employees demonstrated time and time again, their resilience in caring for some of the most vulnerable members of society. This commitment by LifeScape staff through an incredibly trying and disheartening pandemic was significant by anyone’s definition. Their ability to remain positive and show love, care, and respect for those we support has been nothing short of incredible. A hurdle that we continue to address is state funding, which has a significant impact on direct service providers’ (DSP) wages. I have spent many hours testifying before the South Dakota Joint Appropriations Committee requesting additional funds for LifeScape to care for some of the most vulnerable in our great state. I have provided the following facts for the committees to consider while allocating funding: • LifeScape is solely dependent upon Medicaid funding from the state to pay DSP wages. • Staff wages start at $12.50/hour and average $15.09/ hour for DSPs. • DSP wages are low when considering starting wages at Target and Walmart are $15.00/hour and Amazon will soon be adding 1,000 new positions to the area paying $15.35/hour. Hobby Lobby just announced they will be starting new employees out at $17.00/hour. These jobs become alternatives to DSP jobs which are incredibly rewarding, but also incredibly tough in comparison to retail jobs.

In order to attract and keep good staff, we need to offer a competitive wage in the community. In order to have a competitive wage, we need to raise our rates the state pays LifeScape by 20% or the equivalent of a roughly $3/hour increase for our DSPs. The state’s historical rate increases going back two decades have not kept up with wage inflation in the state, resulting in a disincentive to attract and keep good employees. The governor has proposed a 4% increase in rate funding for us this 2021 legislative session, which would only continue to erode our ability to attract a good workforce. To the extent you feel comfortable reaching out to your local legislators, I would ask that you call or write them, simply stating “I would like you to support LifeScape’s efforts to raise funding to be competitive and attract a good workforce.” Multiple voices, especially those of local moms, dads, grandmas, and grandpas speak the loudest to our legislature. Not only does Nyberg’s Ace employ people with disabilities, but they also raise funds to assist with needed programs and equipment at LifeScape. Having partnered with LifeScape for more than 35 years, the Nyberg family and their employees have given their time, treasures, and talents to support the children and adults at LifeScape. They have donated items, hosted fundraisers, made monetary gifts, and more. After running a successful icon campaign for several years (where customers could donate a dollar or more and put their name on a paper icon that was put up in the store), the owners wanted to change it up this past year. After discussions with Marin Huber and her brother Kevin Nyberg, who now run the fivestore operation, they felt moved to support a new program at LifeScape called Go Baby Go. Go Baby Go LifeScape modifies ride-on toy cars for children with mobility disabilities to give them the opportunity to play and socialize with their peers more easily. These powered ride-on toys are a great way for toddlers and preschoolers to move, play, and socialize, providing critical social movement for independence, learning, and brain development. This powered vehicle is modified and given to the child at no cost to the family. Nyberg’s Ace decided this would be a wonderful program that they and their customers could embrace and help fund. Establishing a “round-up” campaign in all five stores this past August, employees asked their customers to round up their purchases to the next dollar to support LifeScape’s Go Baby Go program. This campaign raised almost $8,500 to support mobility for children with disabilities in South Dakota a rousing success! “Nyberg’s Ace is proud to be

You make a significant impact on their lives, as well as the lives of everyone in this grateful community.

Lucas Knopf enjoyed time with players participating in the NAIA basketball event last March, before COVID-19 put us all in quarantine. We all look forward to more time with others in the coming year!

Walk ‘n Roll with us at Virtual MallWalkFebruary 6th!

The pandemic can’t keep MallWalk down – we’re going virtual, and there’s still time to get involved! At 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 6th, we’ll stream a Virtual MallWalk experience at www.LifeScapeMallWalk.org. (You’ll also find Virtual MallWalk on LifeScape’s main Facebook page—@lifescapesd—or click through from LifeScapeSD.org) Teams have been busy forming and raising funds at LifeScapeMallWalk.org and are happily accepting your donations—any amount helps! Most teams are families of kids or adults supported by LifeScape, who know the critical need for the Wish List items that MallWalk proceeds provide. Last year, 39 teams raised $93,628 at MallWalk. With those dollars and others raised throughout the year, the Ambassadors were able to grant $123,364.68 in wishes. Fifty-eight requests were fulfilled, either fully or partially, to provide goods or services not covered by other budget areas. This included rent assistance for adults, a ventilator for LifeScape’s Children’s Specialty Hospital, communication devices, gait trainers for learning to walk, winter clothing, and a karaoke machine for quarantine entertainment.

Our roll in the R Factor I’m reading the book, “Above the Line: Lessons in Leadership and Life from a Championship Program.” The author is Urban Meyer, the former head football coach for the Ohio State Buckeyes and the new head coach for the Jacksonville Panthers. In one chapter he talks about the “R Factor” and the equation “Event + Response = Outcome.” He points out that we don’t have control over the events in our lives and we don’t directly control their outcomes, either. However, we always have control over our response to events. I’ve been giving this equation a lot of thought, not only on how it can transform my leadership and the teams I lead, but also as a guidepost for each of us for personal accountability. The arrival of the COVID virus and the pandemic have certainly been events we’ve had little control over. We do have control over our response, which in turn has been reflected in the outcomes we are seeing in our communities, relationships, and our health. At LifeScape, we are ever grateful for the area foundations, service groups, churches, and the many businesses and individuals listed in the pages that follow. Your response to our call for help enabled us to act quickly and secure protective equipment and testing supplies; to implement teletherapy and remote learning; and to adjust service delivery to meet people’s needs in new settings to ensure their safety and that of our staff who care for them. We are grateful for your generosity! Your response is saving lives. Along with your financial response, we are grateful for your behavioral response. The health of the community affects the health of the individual and vice versa. Thank you for wearing masks to protect yourselves and those around you. Even if you determine your personal risk is low, that may not be the case for the person next to you. The vaccine is also becoming more available. We know the vaccine will protect the most vulnerable among us, and that more people being vaccinated will protect our communities, as well. LifeScape began during the polio epidemic. A vaccine and the world’s response essentially eradicated the polio virus. Our response to receiving the COVID vaccine will determine the health and wellbeing of our communities during this pandemic. We thank you for responding in ways that support the health, safety, and wellbeing of the most vulnerable among us.

Anne and her sister Becky, who is a student at LifeScape’s Pathways to Life Specialty School for transition to adulthood. to learn. She has overcome barriers that many believed she wouldn’t. And she’ll always be my girl. I’ve said it my whole life—everyone deserves a Becky in their life. I don’t know who I owe a thank you to, but I know that I’ll forever be grateful that I was chosen to be her big sister.

Scottish Rite Masons Give Voice to those in Need LifeScape and many Black Hills area families are grateful to the Scottish Rite Masons for their critical financial support of speech and language services at our clinic in Rapid City. Thanks to their support, which began in 1994, countless children have received speech therapy to help them improve their speech and communication skills, either verbally or through augmentative communication. Children who might have remained educationally behind for a lifetime can now talk, read, and lead productive lives. Area Scottish Rite Masons recently visited LifeScape to present a $1300 check to provide more speech-language pathology for area kids. In October, they made a $30,000 gift, bringing the Scottish Rite Foundation’s total giving to LifeScape over the past 27 years to more than $463,800.

“We are grateful for the continued support of the Scottish Rite Masons,” says LifeScape Foundation President Jessica Wells. “This year their support enabled us to make a quick transition to provide speech therapy via telehealth, ensuring children could continue their therapies. They made sure children didn’t lose the progress they had worked so hard for.”

Orthotics, Prosthetics, & Mobility Division Renamed as “RISE Custom Solutions” In July, LifeScape renamed its orthotics, prosthetics, and mobility equipment subsidiary as RISE Custom Solutions. Formerly known as Rehabilitation Medical Supply, RISE Custom Solutions has been providing services since 1999 for people in South Dakota, Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska, and Wyoming. It is housed with outpatient services in Sioux Falls and Rapid City and provides regular orthotics and prosthetics clinics in Sioux City, Orange City, Aberdeen, and Brookings. The new name better reflects RISE Custom Solutions’ services—to solve challenges for patients and help them be as independent and comfortable as possible, customizing wherever needed. “RISE” refers to the resolute spirit of our patients, which we aspire to in serving them—to rise above and beyond with each encounter. Last year, RISE served 3,473 patients. One of those patients is Sioux Falls resident Steve Bruggeman, whose lower right leg was amputated after an injury sustained while serving in the U.S. military. “RISE changed my life,” says Steve. “They listen. They took what I said and designed my prosthetic around that, and it’s been the best prosthetic I’ve ever had. They give me the time that’s needed to get it right.” RISE Custom Solutions provides initial consultations for orthotics and prosthetics free of charge for all ages. September 17, 2021: Hope for the Hills Radiothon-Rapid City. The six HomeSlice Group radio stations will air uplifting LifeScape stories of hope to benefit LifeScape.

In our Summer 2020 edition of the Journey, we shared how adjustments made to the CARES Act affected IRS allowances on charitable giving in 2020. In December, Congress passed—and President Trump signed—a $1.4 trillion omnibus fiscal 2021 appropriations and $900 billion COVID-19 relief package. There is good tax news in the year-end spending package for charities like LifeScape and donors like you! Here is an easy breakdown of the two major tax changes and how you can GIVE MORE at a lower net cost.

Above-the-line tax deduction First, the legislation created an above-the-line tax deduction for cash gifts to qualified charitable organizations: Up to $300 for individuals and up to $600 for joint filers in 2021. In essence, it is an extension of the one-year tax break Congress enacted for 2020 under the pandemic relief CARES Act. However, it goes a step further. It expands the deduction from $300 per tax return in 2020 to allow married couples filing jointly to take double the deduction for 2021-if they make $600 in cash gifts to charity. Here is why this is significant: Since the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, the standard deduction has been so high that substantially fewer people were itemizing deductions, including charitable donations. This above-the-line deduction allows non-itemizers to take a charitable deduction, too, ultimately reducing your adjusted gross income and possibly qualifying you for other tax breaks.

AGI Limits for Charitable Deductions Eliminated The new law also eliminates the percentage limits of Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) for 2021 charitable deductions. This provision ultimately raises the annual limit for charitable cash contributions from typically 60% to 100% of AGI for individuals and from 10% up to 25% for corporations. This originally was enacted under the CARES Act for 2020 and has now been extended for the 2021 tax year.
