LifeScape recently adopted a new vision statement to help set the course for where we want to be by the year 2030. It states:

Steve Watkins Chief Executive Officer Progress! As we look toward our vision of what LifeScape will be in the next decade, we are excited to announce progress on two major projects! In December, LifeScape was awarded a $902,000 grant for a new home for young men with high behavioral challenges. This grant will allow us to complete the $1.1 million project that will become home to eight young people who are transitioning into adulthood. The staff at this new home will focus on individual therapy and education, designed to prepare them for a more standard residential setting. We are very grateful for the State of South Dakota’s support for this program. It will be the first of its kind in South Dakota to provide resources and options to help transition adults with high behavioral challenges into more independent and fulfilling lives. We are also excited to announce that we have entered into a land agreement at the USD Discovery District in northwest Sioux Falls. This 31.6 acre parcel near the I-29 and 60th Street North interchange is where our future children’s campus will be built! The location has many exciting features, including good accessibility, a great campus setting, and opportunities to collaborate with the state’s university system. Our higher education partnerships will focus on growing our professional workforce, developing adaptive technologies for those with disabilities, and participating in various research projects designed to enhance the lives of those we support. The LifeScape Foundation was instrumental in funding this land agreement as part of a broader future capital project for the new campus. The reality of a new campus for LifeScape’s children’s services is one step closer with this location secured!

LifeScape will be an innovative organization providing exceptional services and creative solutions for people with varied needs and complex care across their life span. Through collaborative partnerships, LifeScape will become a destination for research and the development, implementation, and training of technology-based solutions to improve the lives of people we support.

We are living that vision with new collaborative efforts in South Dakota higher education. These partnerships will allow us to fulfill our vision for LifeScape well into the future:

facility. Our goal is to expand to multiple therapy certifications and collaborate on other professional career tracks, as well.

Through the recently opened MadLabs facility at Dakota State University, we are working with the AdaptLab team to develop adaptive technologies for those with disabilities. We are also working with the DSU Department of Education to establish a curriculum that allows special education graduates to receive various levels of certification for autism therapy – this will include practicum requirements on-site at a LifeScape facility. In addition, DSU has committed to the LifeScape Go Baby Go Chapter, and in June will host the nation’s largest girls-only security camp— GenCyber Girls—featuring a Go Baby Go build day.

South Dakota State University LifeScape staff and South Dakota State University’s engineering teams are developing a new “smart” brace. The device is worn on a person’s arm and would help to prevent self-injury. The team is also developing imbedded technology in the brace to monitor data from the individual and environment. These data would eventually be used to identify triggers of self-injury and ultimately reduce or eliminate the behaviors.

University of South Dakota We are collaborating with the Dean of Medicine for the University of South Dakota to establish a curriculum for an Applied Behavior Analysis certification. This would include practicum requirements on-site at a LifeScape

LifeScape has always worked with the community to meet our mission of empowering people to live their best lives. These programs with higher education will propel LifeScape—and the people we support—to the next level of care.

Miguel Lopez was part of a group of adults supported by LifeScape volunteering for “Rake the Town” last fall. Day Services for adults at LifeScape organizes participation in many volunteer projects throughout the year in Sioux Falls. “It’s a way to give back and be good members of our community,” says Activities Associate Jeremy Schaefer.

Shared Living: A New Living Option for Adults

Shared Living is a new adult residential living option LifeScape is offering in the Sioux Falls area. It pairs an adult with a disability (the participant) in a living arrangement with an individual, couple, or family (host home provider). For people needing supports, it provides a real home and community life, as well as more consistent caregiving. LifeScape pairs the host home provider with the participant after doing background checks, an extensive matching process, and training in First Aid, medication management, record-keeping systems and other regulatory trainings. South Dakota does allow the participant’s family to act as his or her host home provider, if the arrangement is agreed upon by all parties.

After matching the participant with the host home provider, LifeScape stays involved as the financial intermediary and provides oversight, including monthly home visits with host home providers and participants, and ongoing training. The participant’s conflict-free case manager and guardian remain unchanged. They also continue with any day services they are involved in. As always, the family is encouraged to remain actively engaged with their loved one. LifeScape will work to build a solid relationship between the participant and host home provider before they enter into a contract agreement. We’ve started 2020 with the exciting news that we’ve secured the location for our new children’s campus at the USD Discovery District in Sioux Falls. The vision for what children’s services can look like in our region started to take form many years ago, however. We’ve outgrown our current school, hospital, children’s residential, and outpatient rehabilitation spaces. The children we support today have very different therapy, education, and care needs from children with polio who we originally opened our doors to in the 1950’s. A new space will allow us to better accommodate those children. It will also allow us to lead the industry in technology development and research, thanks to strong partnerships with the region’s healthcare systems and South Dakota’s higher education institutions. Many pieces still need to be put in place before there’s any groundbreaking for a new building. Finding the best location for the campus was one step in our Journey of Hope campaign. Now we continue to build support for the vision. Before we can break ground, we’ll need to raise the money to build the facility, and the site’s infrastructure needs to be prepared. This could take us and our partners several years to complete. Because the delivery of care is so interconnected in children’s services, we need the whole facility to be completed before any services can move from our current 26th street location. Once we’ve moved, we will sell the 26th street building. The Journey of Hope vision isn’t just about the building. It’s also about the miracles in technology advancements and research that will happen inside the building. Through collaborative partnerships with area health systems and South Dakota’s higher education system, LifeScape will become a destination for research and the development, implementation, and training of technology-based solutions to improve the lives of people with diverse and complex care needs. The LifeScape Foundation provides resources to enhance the lives of children and adults supported by LifeScape. This will continue as we connect with donors to support initiatives and needs within children’s and adult services. We continue to provide funding for improvements in adult day services and residential homes, curriculum for nursing training, internships in psychology and behavior analysis, and equipment and supplies for education, outreach, and outpatient services. Donors like you make an impact in nearly every corner of LifeScape. We will continue to share the vision and give you updates on the progress. Claudia Vucurevich Retires From Board After 29 Years of Service. Longer than anyone, Claudia Vucurevich of Rapid City has been actively involved in LifeScape’s journey to support South Dakotans with disabilities. In December, she retired from the LifeScape board of directors after 29 years of service, but her story with us started even before that. “I’ve always been intrigued by kids,” says Claudia. This passion led her to university training as a childhood educator. She got involved in ARC in Rapid City, now known as The ARC, an advocacy organization “for and with individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. “There weren’t very many options for kids with disabilities in those days,” she says. She also served on the board of Midwest Children’s Center, which had its beginnings at a church, and LifeScape (then Crippled Children’s Hospital & School) acquired in 1985. This operation is now LifeScape Rapid City, an outpatient center providing therapies for much of Western South Dakota. Claudia served on the Western Region Committee which advised the campaign for the building of the facility which opened in 2006. Besides a natural desire to advocate for children, Claudia’s dedication was personal. She and her husband Tom had four children, two children with special needs. A son with Muscular Dystrophy received services at what was then Crippled Children’s Hospital & School in Sioux Falls. The perspective of a

parent was invaluable for the board. She, in turn, appreciated the staff’s respect for the family. “They are never on the outside looking in,” she says. “They are part of the process.” She’s excited about the prospect of a new facility, knowing that Claudia Vucurevich LifeScape has outgrown its landlocked location in central Sioux Falls. LifeScape is never stagnant, says Claudia. “If there’s something innovative that could help people, let’s try it. If it doesn’t work, that’s okay. It’s amazing what levels of technology have come along. As a board member, I’ve appreciated that the staff are working as hard as they can making the extra effort for people they support and their families. It’s always, ‘What can we do better?’ It’s a sign of why the organization has been around so long and continues to grow and improve.” We thank Claudia for her dedication and representation of western South Dakota all these years. As a frequent visitor to Sioux Falls to visit grandchildren, we know she’ll be watching as we move into the future!

LifeScape AbleKids Helped My Son Find His Voice By Guest Columnist Kayla Briese

My son Landon looks like a typical fouryear-old. He loves dinosaurs, his brother, ice cream, and pizza. If you saw our family walking down the street, we’d look like a traditional family. Just a mom, dad, and two rambunctious brothers, ages two and four.

I sincerely don’t know where we would be without the guidance of our Speech-Language Pathologist, Pennie Tesch. I know Landon’s success is largely due to her.

Four-year-old Landon Briese of Sioux City is making great strides with speech therapy.

The first time I heard Landon say, “I love you, Mommy” was right around his 4th birthday. That should be pretty simple for a four-year-old, but in our world, this was a big deal—monumental, even. At the age of two, he was described as “nonverbal.” I wasn’t sure if I would ever hear him say, “Mommy,” let alone that he loves me. I cried happy tears.

Landon’s only medical diagnosis is a developmental speech delay. It seems so minor, but to live it every day is entirely different. Imagine living in a foreign country with no guidebook or translator to help you. No one understands your wants and needs when you try to communicate. That has to be frustrating... then add being a toddler into the mix. This was Landon’s life for several years, and he adapted the only way he knew how, which created some interesting and difficult behaviors to overcome. Landon can become very upset because the words are in his head, but they don’t flow to his mouth. He’s a very intelligent, kind-hearted kid, but when he reaches a certain level of frustration, it’s difficult to calm him down. I could see my son struggling and I wanted to fix it, but I didn’t know how without help. LifeScape AbleKids made everything possible.

Pennie’s experience and knowledge has been indescribable. She doesn’t see a patient, she sees a unique person. Without her patience and perseverance, I don’t know how we would have made progress in his speech. As Landon’s mom, I appreciate her willingness to try new activities with Landon—to experiment with activities that engage him. I’ve never been made to feel ashamed or been shrugged off when I’ve brought questions or concerns to her attention. When I thank the Lord for my blessings, Pennie is always on my list. A lot of kids Landon’s age participate in sports during the week. A typical week for us includes two speech therapy sessions, and we are perfectly happy with that. I’m confident that someday he’ll tell me all about the grand slam he hit at baseball practice or the awesome three-pointer he shot during a scrimmage, and we will have LifeScape AbleKids to thank for that. He’s at the age where preschool and kindergarten are on our minds. In our world there will be a ton of what we call “front-loading. ” This is the prep-work Landon needs to be successful, like touring the classrooms, meeting the teachers, and taking pictures of the new school. Calendars and routines are great visual helps for Landon. They’ve been crucial in his progress and they will be critical for his future success. Navigating the world of IEPs, special education classrooms, behavioral goals, speech goals, and visual aids seems scary and intimidating. I am not an educator— these things are all new. I don’t claim to be an expert in any of those areas. What I have learned, though, is that I am an expert in Landon.

I know everything about Landon through cues and experience, not words. We have conversations that include giggles and smiles, tears and sobbing. I can identify his feelings by noticing a slight fist clench or quick, shallow breaths. Our conversations are different, not less. They’ve given me an insight to Landon that no teacher or therapist has. I am his expert. My opinion and feelings matter, but it took me a while to figure this out. I’m much more clearheaded and calm when I walk into an IEP meeting. I’m fearless when I make special requests. I’m unwavering when I have concerns. I am advocating for my son because he can’t do it yet. I work hard to make relationships with the people in Landon’s life. His teachers and therapists are all too familiar with me emailing, texting, calling, or randomly showing up at school just to see how his day is. Overall, I’m excited for Landon’s future. We are in a great place. He has exceeded the expectations of teachers and doctors. In the course of a year, we’ve gone from him speaking five words to now forming complete sentences. He can identify 15 types of dinosaurs and count to 30. He uses people’s names and expresses his wants and needs. He has developed friendships with adults and children. There was a time in our lives when I didn’t think these things would ever be possible, and now I’m thrilled to see what else he has up his sleeve. I will never stop advocating for my son because I know he’s never going to give up learning and living his best life. I’m excited to see him in speech and drama or basketball. I’m excited to see him choose a college major. The future is promising for Landon, and I can attribute this to the help we’ve received from LifeScape AbleKids. Thank you.

Planning Your Legacy is About More Than Money When it comes to estate planning, finances and items of value receive the most attention. Don’t forget about family traditions and important life lessons. Passing on financial assets, real estate and possessions to future generations can be a stressful process. This anxiety can often lead to putting it off due to concerns about difficult conversations with family, confusing topics, or even coming to terms with your own mortality. While finances play an important role in planning, your legacy includes things such as family traditions, fond memories and meaningful valuables to those you leave behind.

Items of Value and Personal Possessions Often when we lose a loved one, certain items hold the most meaning and offer a priceless connection to the deceased. Grandma’s recipe cards with her unique handwriting and grandpa’s favorite recliner are both beautiful things that may hold a different type of value. These items can also be a point of contention amongst family members when there isn’t a clear plan for who gets what. Have conversations early on by asking if there are any mementos with special meaning that they might like to have once you are gone. Asking for input and having an open dialogue where everyone has a say is the perfect way to curb any potential conflicts. Once a determination has been made, put it in writing.

Final Wishes and Instructions If you haven’t already created a health care directive, do it, and assign someone (with their knowledge and consent) to serve as your health care proxy. To make things easier for them, specify details in your living will as much as possible. This will ensure that your wishes are followed and alleviate any gray areas involving decisions to be made. It is also critical to consider things like insurance to cover costs and possible changes to your living situation as you age. In addition to your will, offer clear written instructions to close family members or the executor regarding your preference on funeral arrangements, burial, cremation, and any memorial service. Provide family members with the location of important documents and instructions as well as passwords for important websites and accounts. This can greatly alleviate stress for your loved ones during this already emotionally draining time.

Personal Values, Life Lessons and Many Memories Life is all about love and lessons learned. If you desire to impart your wisdom and experiences on your loved ones, consider putting pen to paper and document some family history and traditions. A video diary is a unique way to share these stories and values while also serving as a beautiful keepsake. Whether it is holiday traditions, meaningful humanitarian work that is close to your heart, or advice to grandchildren, these recorded memories will be something your family may cherish forever.

Also, consider what items you will gift to your favorite non-profit organization, like LifeScape, that might suit their needs. An appraisal on these items can also help determine if you want to sell them or pass them on. Another meaningful asset to pass along as part of your legacy is real estate. No matter if it is for generating additional income, for a main residence or a vacation home, there are associated responsibilities to each that need to be addressed. If you plan to pass real property on, be sure that the recipient is prepared to handle maintenance, rising property taxes, and any additional mortgage. Many people hope to leave behind financial assets like savings, investments and retirement accounts to their beneficiaries – both family as well as charitable organizations. Using a trust to pass these assets may provide more control over distribution, however that option has certain complexities that should be reviewed with your financial advisor. An annual review of insurance policies is a great way to ensure that information is up to date and that the correct parties will receive the proceeds. 401(k)s, traditional IRAs or other qualified plans that are tax-deferred are often one of the largest assets in a person’s estate. If you want to use these proceeds to leave a legacy, you should explore ways to minimize the tax burden these accounts can create for beneficiaries. Directing your RMD (required minimum distribution beginning at 70 ½ years old) from an IRA to the LifeScape Foundation is an easy way to support our shared cause. Since the tax rate for charities is 0%, the income tax liability related to those accounts can completely disappear when a charity is the beneficiary. Planning for your legacy is rarely an easy process, however starting with some of these simple basics can help you think through organizing what you’ll leave behind. It may even help you feel more prepared and confident knowing that your wishes will be fulfilled. The peace of mind knowing that your family will be able to share these important memories, traditions and mementos is one of the best gifts you can give yourself.
