Steve Watkins Chief Executive Officer First, I want to take a moment to say thank you to all of you who support the LifeScape family. It is incredibly important work we do and it wouldn’t be possible without your continued support. I spent much of January and February working with the new governor’s team and state legislators. Most of the time was spent educating everyone on who LifeScape is and what services we provide, along with messaging on the challenges we face, particularly with workforce. Although we have a number of initiatives to address attracting and keeping our workforce, a critical driver of this issue is base pay. We have been working in concert with the other community service providers in the state to raise awareness on this challenge. The governor proposed a 4.5% across-the-board increase in funding for all CSPs. This would result in a funding increase for LifeScape of roughly +$1.5 million annually—if the legislature approves the recommendations. This is one of the better funding proposals LifeScape has seen in many years. We have asked for additional funding beyond the Governor’s proposal for adult care and have focused additional attention on specific children reimbursement rates impacting wards of the State as well as Rapid City Outpatient Clinic rates totaling a further $1 million in funding. By the time you read this, the state budget will likely be finalized. If we do not prevail, rest assured, we will keep going back to ask for an equitable solution to this problem.
Journey Spotlight: Brian Corwin “The most amazing individual I have ever known. Just a wonderful human being.” That is what Brian Corwin’s supervisor, Rick Breit, had to say about one of his stellar employees in the Rushmore Room at LifeScape on Western Avenue. Although Brian has a visual impairment, he is a master at running the riveting machine. Brian uses his senses to feel for pieces on either side of his machine and then guides them onto the riveter to line them up. Once the pieces are aligned, Brian reaches into the bins on either side of his machine to Brian is a master at using a riveting machine in his production grab the next two pieces that need to be job at LifeScape in Sioux Falls. put together. While doing so, a light sensor is triggered so that the machine knows Brian’s hands are free from the area and proceeds to hammer down, riveting the pieces together. These pieces are part of a balance system that will be used in the locking systems found in double-hung windows. Throughout Brian’s 15 years in his current position, Brian has assembled thousands of these locking systems as well as the pulleys that can also be found in double-hung window units. Brian has been receiving services from LifeScape since 1992. Currently, he lives at Country Meadows in his own apartment and receives support from LifeScape day staff with grocery shopping, paying bills, managing medications, and transportation to and from work. “It’s not just the people I work with that I really like, it’s the staff and supervisors that make it fun,” says Brian. Brian hopes that someday he can meet someone famous, such as Peyton Manning. When he’s not busy skiing, or out to eat with friends at his favorite restaurant, Slim Chickens, he can be found doing self-advocacy work. Brian is the former president of South Dakota’s People First chapter – an organization that is dedicated to self-advocacy and helping people who are unable to speak up or stand up for themselves. Brian wants people to know that everyone has a voice and if they aren’t able to stand up for themselves, there are always people that will help you to do it. An exciting new development is that we have been privileged to have Dr. Josh Pauli of Dakota State University join our governing board of directors. Josh brings a background of technology to LifeScape that will allow us to collaborate with DSU and other providers of technology to those with disabilities. I am very excited at the potential this collaboration will bring to those we serve with state-of-the-art technology being tested and deployed with our LifeScape family. The potential to assist Josh and his team at DSU in achieving their goals while leveraging those same goals to potentially become a premier destination for technologybased services for those with disabilities is extremely exciting! Whether it’s been with events they have held through their community involvement program, or on the business side helping our organization with risk management and insurance benefits for employees, the SilverStone Group supports LifeScape on many fronts.

Over a dozen people enjoyed the afternoon taking in the sun and fun. “There was such an appreciation for the activity that we planned,” says John. “The people who participated have such a joy for life!” The SilverStone Group started as an insurance business in Council Bluffs, Iowa in 1945. More than 70 years later, the firm now has four offices and offers a diverse range of services including employee benefit, investment, and risk management services. Silverstone Group’s founder believed that success and generosity were two sides of the same coin. This is an ideal they still hold true today by giving back to the communities they serve. LifeScape values the partnership SilverStone group has with us and thanks their employees for their time and involvement with the people we serve. Cover Story (continued) Twice a week, Rykan sees Megan for speech therapy and Sarah Dickes for occupational therapy. Sarah uses ESDM principles to help with daily living skills like hand-washing and tooth-brushing, fine motor function, bike riding, and imitation. Rykan’s therapies will help him attend school with his peers and make him a more independent adult.
“He’s listening and following directions better,” says Tara. “He can sit for three to five minutes and eat with silverware. He makes eye contact and will ask for things or will point at what he wants. He has comprehension of ‘no’ meaning ‘no.’ He’s better at waiting, and will answer yes and no verbally. And the first time he said ‘Mom’ again—that made me cry.”
Outside doors still have double deadbolts and keys to get in and out, and the refrigerator and cupboards are locked to thwart a favorite Rykan activity – smashing eggs on the floor and dumping out cereal—but Rykan has come a long way.
“I love these therapists,” says Ryan. “What would we do without this place? I feel bad for parents who can’t bring their kids here, because these kids need that help. We wouldn’t have the knowledge to teach him. It was a great blessing to find LifeScape.”
This is one of my favorite issues of The Journey newsletter. It is our opportunity to shine a bright light and lift up the generosity that weaves the safety net of care and security for the most vulnerable children and adults in our society. When our new CEO, Steve Watkins, was meeting with families during his first months on the job, he heard two things repeatedly from families: Parents want their children to have lives that matter (this is true for all parents--no matter how old your children are) and they want to know their children will be cared for and safe when they (the parents) are gone. These deepest desires reside in the hearts of every parent. I believe you and all supporters of LifeScape understand these fundamental, human needs. They are among the many reasons LifeScape has such a strong base of supporters. Thank you for recognizing the good your support does in the lives of the over 3,000 children and adults supported by LifeScape. You impacted their lives by being a part of the $2.7 million worth of philanthropic support in 2018 that helped fill the gap for staff training and wages and kept our buildings safe where people live, recreate, attend school, and receive healthcare and therapy. You have helped provide specialized therapy and education equipment, as well as meaningful day activities. You have assisted in providing shelter for 82 individuals through $40,000 worth of rent assistance, plus $14,000 in food assistance for 56 adults. You have provided over 17,369 volunteer hours in our school, day services, residential areas, and our hospital. You have made a difference in every part of LifeScape, ensuring individuals have opportunities to lead a fulfilling life—a life that matters. In this issue, we recognize the generosity and say thank you to good people who made their estate plans in the 1950’s, believing in the power of their role to care for the most vulnerable in our society. We also are blessed to recognize and say “thank you” to the many individuals and businesses who see and trust in our vision for the future. The needs have continued to evolve over the last 70 years. Because of your support, LifeScape has been there when and where children and adults with special healthcare, education, supported living, and employment needs need us the most.
Rykan has a special connection with Speech-Language Pathologist Megan Wiessner. Megan is South Dakota’s only certified therapist in the Early Start Denver Model treatment approach.

Proceeds will go toward Wish List purchases for LifeScape, with gifts granted by the Ambassadors. March 20, 2019: 55th Annual Mountain Oyster Benefit. This benefit for LifeScape is hosted by East River Electric at Nicky’s Restaurant in Madison, SD. Serving starts at 5:30 and includes pork sandwiches, a raffle, and silent auction. $10 per person, $5 for kids, 5 & under free.
LifeScape Foundation is pleased to be an Interest for Others participant. Founded in 2014, Interest for Others is a Minneapolis-based online giving platform that encourages people to donate earned interest from their bank accounts to charities they love. Generous Groups Provide Brighter Lives LifeScape is blessed to have the support of so many groups and organizations that brighten the lives of the children and adults supported at LifeScape. We are so blessed by these fund- and friend-raisers. We also send our heartfelt thanks to long-time friends and supporters, the Scottish Rite Foundation and the South Dakota Elks Association. The Scottish Rite champions projects in western South Dakota and across the state to help children with communication disorders. The Elks Lodges, BPO Does, Winner Elks Rodeo and SD Elks Association make our Outreach Program possible by providing the funding to send therapists to help children in homes, schools and daycares across the state.
