CONTENTS
Spring, a time of fresh beginnings and optimism. As we become more confident with life our confidence also grows with our decoration choices and colour is key to our mood and feeling of wellbeing. My visit to Maison & Objet in Paris where all designers presented their collections for 2015 was uplifting and so many of the designs are witty and vibrant. A new baby is so exciting and as we look forward to welcoming a new Royal, I am anticipating the arrival of a new baby in my own family. (see page 28 for childrens’ room ideas) It has been an exciting time to see new brands and so much British design. It has been a particular joy working with Verity on the ‘Layla Faye’ collection (see page 4) just launched, the colour palette and freshness of the collection is fabulous and we hope you will love it as much as we do. Our hand made curtain and blind making service has continued to grow and we pride ourselves on the attention to detail as we strive to help our customers create beautiful spaces in their homes. We hope you enjoy the latest trends and have fun recreating your own space!

Inspirations of a Wallpaper Designer Verity Wilkinson - designer, business woman and mother of two, reveals the passions and inspirations behind her striking, nostalgic wallpaper range. Verity Wilkinson
Who has influenced your work the most? My dad was an artist, potter and woodwork teacher, mum made our clothes and gran was a great knitter - all of which inspired me to design and create from an early age. I was extremely proud to work on my dad’s pottery stands as a child and loved the process of producing beautiful ceramics by hand that would be enjoyed in homes for many years. Our dining room table was always full of stunning pottery and paintings. My dad loved to dream big and I am pleased to have inherited these same ideals in my life. What has been the inspiration behind your designs? Inspiration for my designs comes from travel around the world, living in quirky homes and exciting cultures and a love of fifties/sixties design and music. and architecture. I am always on the look out for something to spark a new design and usually find inspiration in the great outdoors. All the designs are united by a nostalgic retro-modern feel and bright happy colours that add a contemporary flow throughout the collection. The most popular design has been Daisy Chain, a bold bright print influenced by the masonry at the Italian Gothic Doge’s Palace in Venice, a stunning building that overlooks the canal. This was the first design I created for Layla Faye and the central flower has become part of our logo. Bright happy colours add a twenty first century twist to all our designs. We have a range of signature colours that flow throughout the collection with an aim to bring a warm feeling of joy to every room. Why did you set up your own business? I travelled and worked around the world throughout my twenties which gave me a feeling of being able to go anywhere and do anything. I travelled with a battered Lonely Planet book always in my hand. Tony and Margaret Wheeler, founders of Lonely Planet books had an inspirational prologue about kick starting their business from a kitchen table and I still get a tingle of excitement when I read this paragraph. They juggled business and a family successfully which is a balance we try to emulate with our two children. I have worked alongside my husband on a number of business projects and currently design interiors for his Airstream and Classic camper van renovation business. We feel that working for ourselves will eventually give us freedom to write our own success story.

Why call the company Layla Faye? I started the business on maternity leave. I was sure I was going to have a baby girl named Layla Faye but instead I was blessed with a bouncing baby boy WALLPAP ERDIRECT.COM 5

Bobby John so I had a spare name which I loved and I gave the name Layla Faye to the business, my third baby. Where are you based and where have you lived that has inspired you? We live not far from Skipton close to the beautiful Yorkshire Dales. At weekends we are always out and about wading in rivers and cart wheeling around fields with our two children 9 and 2. We love the outdoors and I am a huge fan of Spring and Summer when all the meadows are full of wildlife and flowers. The majority of my designs have a flower or leaf at their origin. We have lived in some beautiful places, exciting cultures and quirky homes including a spell on a barge close to Bath. My favourite place in the world is St. Ives Cornwall where we lived for a time and got married in St. Eia Church. It is without doubt one of the most perfect seaside towns which snuggles together all of my happiest memories. I love the culture of artists in St. Ives and am a huge fan of Bernard Leech, Barbara Hepworth and the bright designs of Patrick Heron, Sir Terry Frost and Sandra Blow all of whom spent time in this influential free thinking place.

New for Spring 2015 Painted Papers is a definitive compendium of striped wallpapers, produced using traditional printing methods. More than just plain stripes, all ten designs in the new collection have been reworked from historic patterns sourced from several archives including those of English Heritage and range in date from the early 1800s to mid 1960s. Using traditional surface-printing methods, which originally would have applied paint rather than ink, the product of these papers reflect very closely that used in preceding centuries: it also gives them their delightfully tactile feel and slightly textured appearance. Tailor Stripe (shown here) is a mid 20th century stripe, which can be used either horizontally or vertically and the six tightly packed colours in each colourway allow several opportunities for picking out painted walls and trim.

Launched in 2006 by London based designers, Keith Stephenson and Mark Hampshire, Mini Moderns have had both retail and critical success with their collections, which were inspired by their love of the 90’s Buddha of Surburbia novel and TV series, trips to Whitby and a road trip holiday across America. They have now looked to the beauty of Kent or to be precise the magical atmosphere of Dungeness, a favourite holiday destination for 20 years. Dungeness with its wild, stark beauty has been a source of inspiration for artists for decades and continues to draw people to visit its rich marshland and rugged shoreline. The striking Feathers design is a collaboration between Mini Moderns and artist, Matt Sewell. The design is based on Matt’s feather watercolours, which feature in the design for the end papers of his book Our Songbirds. The individual feathers each relate to the birds featured in the book. Craftsmen in paint and paper, Farrow & Ball, has added three dynamic new wallpaper designs to its collection of handcrafted wallpapers. Found in the Ducharne and Albert Dufours collections, the new patterns have been translated from fabric designs into new wallpapers. Like all Farrow & Ball paints and wallpapers, the new additions each have an interesting name and an equally intriguing story: Tourbillon is taken from the Ducharne studio which created designs for some of the most famous couture houses in France from the 1920s to 1960s. The paper is composed of segmented circles which blend to give a graphic look. Taken from an 1800s jacquard found in a collection of Albert Dufours originals, Paisley is a contemporary version of the timeless paisley design so often seen in the worlds of fashion and interior design. Feuille, the French for leaf, is a largescale leaf pattern that flows organically
Why did you choose to add these wallpapers to your collection? The inspiration for these new papers came from time spent in Paris. The movement within the patterns really caught my eye and I could instantly see them translated into wallpaper, they come from fabrics created for clothing which is increasingly relevant given the ever closing gap between fashion and interiors. How could our readers use the new designs in their own home? Both Feuille and Paisley are timeless designs that would work in any room of the home. With its organic feel, Feuille could work especially well in a kitchen or conservatory linking the interior of the home with the outside. Tourbillon is a bolder design, but feels very different depending on the colourway used. You can create real impact in a bedroom with our black and Setting Plaster combination, or add subtle pattern with tone-on-tone Ammonite and Purbeck Stone. WALLPAP ERDIRECT.COM 33

Have you used wallpaper in your own home? Yes, my absolute favourite wallpaper is Lotus and I’ve used it in a very classic way above the dado rail in my hall creating a real focal point for the house. Because our wallpapers are made using our paints you can create a seamless connection between paint and paper - I’ve picked out the pattern colour, Teresa’s Green, and used this below the dado rail. Under Tricia Guild’s expert creative direction, the design studio gathers ideas for inspiration and paint everything by hand which she says “imbues each design with a character and integrity that is often lacking in designs that are generated by computer.” It is this artistic approach that sets the brand apart from its competitors and ensures it is at the forefront of trends whilst also remaining a go-to destination for enduring designs for every aspect of your home. The company was founded by Tricia Guild OBE in 1970 when she opened a small shop on London’s Kings Road and produced a collection of Indian inspired block printed fabrics. Since then, the brand has branched into wallpaper, furniture, carpets and rugs and a plethora of home accessories and their collections are sold in over eighty countries worldwide. Her philosophy, however, was the same then as it is now. She tells us – “I was always interested in creating a total lifestyle and the relationship between different elements within a space. How one’s walls react with our curtains and furniture and accessories. It is a sort of alchemy and it continues to fascinate me to this day.” This season also sees the launch of their new and brilliantly updated paint collection. We’ve just moved house and I’m in the process of decorating. The sitting room is newly wallpapered but with a vinyl paper I don’t like - is there an easy way to remove it? Amy and Dan, Norwich Vinyl is easy to remove as the top layer of vinyl peels and the backing paper underneath just needs soaking with soapy water and then comes off easily - so you’ll be able to some hang new wallpaper in no time! I’m really exited by some foil and sparkly wallpapers I’ve seen recently on your website - are they really difficult to hang? Julie, London No they are not difficult but most foils and glitter are paste the wall so quite easy to apply simply put the adhesive on the wall first. I’ve only used traditional wallpaper before, how much quicker and easier is ‘Paste-the-wall’ to hang? Megan, Lincoln Papering straight from the roll cuts decorating time by about a half. . . because the pasting table process is eliminated, it’s a lot cleaner and less messy too. Most traditional wallpapers expand when wet, which means they must be left to soak before hanging. Paste the wall products have a specially developed backing which does not expand, allowing it to be hung still dry.
