D

uring the 18th Century, London and Paris were independent hubs for wallpaper production, each centred on artisan studios creating bespoke papers for the decoration of the homes of society’s elite. However, as new trade routes evolved between the two countries this resulted in a mixing of English and French design styles and manufacturing techniques. New, efficient block-printing production lines meant complex, multi-coloured papers could be made in long lengths – in rolls rather than individual sheets and this meant they were both more affordable and accessible, which resulted in the first big boom in wallpaper usage worldwide.

Little Greene have drawn on these archives from both London and Paris to source their latest heritage wallpaper collection, Revolution Papers, which comprises of seven designs typifying the period: traditional damasks and delicate toile patterns with a sophisticated colour palette creating a stunningly beautiful and contemporary collection.

At Home with Sophie Conran

Wallpaperdirect speaks to Sophie Conran about future projects in her new home and where she gets her inspiration from

W

hether the Duke of Wellington was as adept at choosing soft furnishings as he was military tactics is sadly lost with time (although we know he did have a penchant for Napoleon memorabilia), but under the guiding influence of design polymath Sophie Conran, one of the Duke’s former residences is sure to have a homely touch.

“I bought a new house in the country and it dates back to the 1780s,” Sophie tells wallpaperdirect from her London office. “It used to be owned by the Duke of Wellington and it has the most fantastic rooms and floors.”

Getting the new house ready to move into could take more than a year, but Sophie is looking at it as a long-term project. “It’s going to take the rest of my life! It’s a great project. There are the gardens, and some derelict parts of the land that will need landscaping.

I need to rationalise spaces and make the best use of light and the aspect. I want a lovely, warm, comfortable and happy environment, and to enhance the inherent beauty. However, it’s the details that make it a home.”

It’s the focus on the detail that has made Sophie Conran such a force in the design world. Whether it is a kitchen, glass and tableware range for Portmeirion, the Rivelin range of cutlery with Arthur Price or garden tools for 38 WALLPAPERDIRECT

Burgon & Ball, Sophie’s designs have an evocative aesthetic and inspire an emotional attachment. But it’s among her wallpaper collections with Arthouse where we see her most personal influence.

“Growing up in the English countryside gave me an appreciation of the beauty and peace to be found in nature. London was like a glittering playground filled with excitement and opportunity, culture and contradictions.

on a metallic base. Opening Doors is a remarkable flock design also with a metallic background. It’s as modern as Postcards Home, a retro 1940’s style with postcards, text and floral detail, is whimsical.

That nostalgia and memory figure strongly isn’t surprising; she had a unique upbringing surrounded by boundless creativity. Her early life was shaped by her parents, the designer and restauranteur Sir Terence Conran, and mother, the food writer Caroline Conran. Similarly her brothers Tom, Edmund, Sebastian and Jasper Conran have all been an essential influence.

“They’ve all been an immense help,”

Sophie says. “My dad taught me a great deal and all my brothers are interested and involved, and I’ve worked closely with Jasper and he’s a huge inspiration.”

Wallpaperdirect speaks to Sophie at the end of a busy day, but she cheerfully recounts just some of the projects she’s working on including her new online shop (www.sophieconran.com) launched at the end of last year, and selling china, cutlery, textiles and kitchenware. She is also excited about a new wallpaper collection she and her team have just started working on. “It’s still in the really early stages of the wallpaper pattern book,” she says.

“Making wallpaper is such a complicated process, and there are new techniques being developed all the time.

For example, there’s some great wallpaper coming out of Japan at the moment.”

So how does the creative process work? “At the beginning we look at the techniques and colour. Wallpaper isn’t 2D, it’s 3D, full of layering, and the light can change everything. It makes it very interesting to work on. I also draw on the wealth of knowledge from Arthouse and my team, and we look at lots of ideas; some fall out and some stay.”

The collection will, she also admits, be inspired by her new Georgian house. “I’m imagining the Georgian period, the fashions and the architectural details,” Sophie explains.

“But my aim is to make beautiful wallpaper with fantastic techniques.

“With all my design ideas, I really want to make things that are practical but something that enhances the experience and the atmosphere of the place too.”
