We have incorporated these into the magazine with some great photography to help you choose the style for you. We are constantly evolving our websites and with over 11,000 patterns of wallpaper on wallpaperdirect.co.uk and thousands of paint colours on designerpaint.co.uk, it was important to help you narrow your selection. We have improved our search options on wallpaper to help you select by price, colour, style or brand and we are launching our new look paint site in the late spring which will have the same search options as paper, making it much easier to see colour and visualize room ideas.

LITTLE GREENE

A true interpretation of old meeting new, Little Greene have sympathetically updated wallpaper fragments from circa 1690 to the turn of the 20th century for a range of seven designs and over 35 papers that travel through time and have a story to tell. For example, Crooms Hill (c1760) has been recreated from the Manor House on Crooms Hill in Greenwich. It was around this time that paper hangers began decorating rooms using full lengths of wallpaper rather than individual prints to achieve an artisan effect. Crooms Hill (left) possibly depicts scenes from the travels of Dr Burnaby, vicar of Greenwich from 1769-1812.

Delving further back in time, New Bond Street (right) is based on one of the oldest surviving documents in English Heritage’s wallpaper archive – a c1690 fragment from an embossed leather wall hanging that actually pre-dates wallpaper.

Panels of embossed and painted leather, usually with a floral pattern, were popular, though expensive, modes of decoration in the late 16th and 17th centuries. New Bond Street enables you to achieve the same effect with wallpaper alone.

The provenance of these revived English Heritage wallpapers makes for compelling reading and will embolden any home with a classic-meets-contemporary style that could turn the neighbours green with envy!
