Mylands

Mylands have been manufacturing paint since 1884 and are the oldest, genuine paint manufacturer in Great Britain still owned and managed by the same family.

Japanese Inspired Wallpapers Craftsmen in paint and paper, Farrow & Ball, has launched four tranquil new wallpaper designs to its growing collection of handcrafted wallpapers. Uniquely created using real Farrow & Ball paints, the new designs evoke scenes of peaceful, rural Japan and embrace the current trend for shibori and popularity of Japanese style and design.

Like all Farrow & Ball paints and wallpapers, the new additions each have interesting names and an equally intriguing story: Aranami meaning raging waves, is taken from a painstakingly crafted papercut design which Farrow & Ball upscaled to create a detailed, flowing pattern.

Delicate Yukutori means birds flying away in a group, and is a simple design taken from a midtwentieth century Japanese pen and ink drawing. Soft outlines of birds float across the paper creating a delicately patterned effect.

Amime meaning the space between netting, is also taken from a pen and ink drawing. It is a beautifully textured woven design that conjures picturesque scenes of Japanese fishermen repairing their nets.

Taken from a metallic print found in Kyoto, Shouchikubai is the most distinctively Oriental of the new designs and features flowers, bamboo and trees in Japanese hexagonal frames.

Can you settle an argument with my husband please - We’ve seen some lovely wallpapers in a bathroom setting, I didn’t think you could use wallpaper in a moist atmosphere but my husband insists you can - who’s right?

You certainly can use wallpaper in a bathroom or kitchen - some people like to use vinyl paper in these rooms but you can choose any paper for a humid atmosphere if the room is well ventilated. You need to make sure you use the correct paste for the job and I usually add a bit extra to the seams when hanging the paper. I would recommend Albany Super Smooth Wallcovering Adhesive - Good luck.

Can you please tell me what the difference is between paste the wall paper and conventional paper please and which is easier to use? I’m a novice decorator!

The major difference between the papers is that conventional papers rely on the moisture from the adhesive to make them fully expand, this process takes about 5 minutes. Paste the wall paper is a different paper construction and doesn’t need to expand (so no need for soaking time) It is easier for a novice to hang.

I’ve just moved house and my new home has got lots of old fashioned wallpaper everywhere! Is it possible to hang new paper over existing wallpaper?

It is possible Luke, if the existing paper is flat and not woodchip, raised or vinyl as adhesive won’t adhere to these surfaces. I’d think carefully as, no matter how well old paper is prepared, it won’t look as good as hanging onto a new lining paper.
