2012 is about celebration with The Diamond Jubilee and The Olympic Games, and there is a lot to be very positive about. Wallpaper plays an interesting role in celebration and there are some wonderful designs celebrating all things British - both royal and sporting.

I have always preferred to have my cup half full, as life - although gloomy at the moment - is what you make it. In my own home, I have a Wall Words mural in my kitchen, the heart of the home, with the statement “it’s your life, make it great”; a bit corny perhaps but something I strongly believe in. There are lots of fun statements to choose from in ‘Wall Words Design’ on our website, so be bold and say something about how you feel!

blue, perfect for a nursery, to the deepest indigo colours, for adding drama. Blue is suitable for any room, but be careful with the tone. Too grey and it will have cooling effect, which is useful should you wish to cool a very hot sunny room but should be avoided otherwise.

Jocelyn Warner’s nature inspired designs have been gracing our walls since 1999. We discover the secrets behind the design and production of her new, distinctive collection.

Wisteria As the trend for florals continues to blossom in our homes, Wisteria offers a trailing repeat pattern that’s “quite a nostalgic, cottage garden image, but graceful,” Jocelyn says. Having photographed a beautiful wisteria tree she passed daily on her way to work for two years, she knew that she “wanted a tonal effect in the branches, leaves and flower heads.” Up close, the print is incredibly detailed. This has been achieved by ‘gravure’, one of Jocelyn’s favourite printing techniques which “generates a print with a hand blocked feel, for a fine, tonal effect.”

Up close, the print is incredibly detailed Dandy Dandy was inspired by a single stem peony given to Jocelyn by a friend, and a set of 1950s floral plates she discovered at a flea market. The two elements combine “to create a design that has a strong sense of identity without being retro,” she explains.

To ensure that the flowers did not appear flat, she used ‘surface printing’ “one of the oldest methods and one that most closely resembles hand block printing - adding a richness and depth which can’t be achieved by any other form of production.”

Top Tips for Wallpapering!

“Women know that a beautiful dress will not look its best without good underwear and I think of lining paper as underwear for wallpaper!” says wallpaperdirect’s Editor, Melanie Adams. The right lining paper provides the perfect foundation on which to dress your walls seamlessly.

Why and hoW to choose the right lining paper?

There are lots of different grades of lining paper to choose from, but the higher the grade of paper, the thicker it is and the thicker it is, the more it will cover up imperfections.

The thickest paper is 2000 grade.

There are ‘paste the wall’ lining papers which should be used under ‘paste the wall’ papers.

There are wide width linings called Wallrock, which are up to 1m wide. These cover and reinforce problem surfaces such as cracked and damaged plaster and even wood panelling.

They are a ‘paste the wall’ product, very easy to hang and a great base for wallpapering.

In addition, there is a product called Thermal liner, which is

75cm wide and is, again, a ‘paste the wall’ lining but has a thick pad behind it, which helps to keep the room warmer. This is particularly effective on walls of solid construction where it can reduce room warm-up times by up to 65%.

LOGOS TO LOOK OUT FOR...

Thermal liner works by creating an air barrier between the surface of the wall and the surface of the wallpaper. It thereby restricts heat loss into the wall during the warm-up phase of the room and has the added benefit of reducing cold air currents which often make a room feel colder than it actually is. Thermal liner contains no PVC or fibreglass. Not only does it allow walls to breathe but it also effectively reduces, and in many cases eliminates, conditions that promote unsightly and unhealthy mould growth by maintaining the wall surface temperature above the point at which mould promoting condensation can form.

Thermal liner can be applied over old rough plaster or even old fashioned textured walls that are in sound condition, creating a smooth base suitable for the application of paint or wallpaper.

If you’re looking to buy a Wallrock Thermal lining paper, these logos confirm at a glance for you that the paper has energy saving, mould resistant, and hypoallergenic properties.

TOP TIPS • Before you hang your lining paper, it is still vital to rub the walls down to make them smooth! Lining paper is not an alternative to good, initial preparation.

• Always use the same adhesive for both the lining paper and the top paper as the adhesive needs to be chemically compatible. The bond to the wall needs to be as strong as the wallpaper to the lining paper.
