One of the best parts of rediscovering Breedon’s past is the people who have lived and worshipped in the parish for hundreds of years. Whilst some might be well known – such as John Johnson, murdered by the 4th Earl Ferrers – others are more obscure. Take for instance my personal favourite, Thomas Allt. My fi rst encounter with him was in the churchyard, his epitaph reading ‘I have engraven for many a one / On stones that stand around’, an occupation confi rmed by the surname ‘Allt’ inscribed on many of the surrounding stones.

However, Thomas’ presence can also be seen in the church itself. As you walk from the porch into the nave, look on the left side of the doorframe to see the words ‘T. Allt’ – his name (or initials) can also be found on the Shirley tombs, organ loft and in the bell chamber. Clearly Thomas wanted to make his mark on the world, although perhaps not always for the right reasons; he was also a convicted felon who stole 112lb of lead off the church roof. To celebrate these lives, on Saturday 3rd September, at 5pm, monologues of eight men and women connected to Breedon’s past will be performed in the church, and you are all warmly invited to come and listen as the past characters are brought to life.
