You are more at risk from a fi re when asleep, so it’s a good idea to get in a routine and check your home before you go to bed each night. Below is a checklist of do’s and don’ts:

• Close all doors in the house. This will slow down the spread of fi re.(Can you spot which room in the image had the door closed?) • Switch off and unplug electrical appliances like
TV’s and microwaves. • Check your cooker is turned off. Also avoid cooking when sleepy or when you’ve been drinking. • Don’t leave the washing machine on overnight.
This goes for tumble dryers and dishwashers too. They are a major cause of house fi res. • Turn heaters off. Never place clothes over heaters either. • Put candles and cigarettes out properly. Battery powered candles are best. • Make sure all exit routes are clear. Clear stairs and hallways of clutter. • Keep door and window keys where everyone can fi nd them. Preferably on your escape route so you’ll always be able to get out the property. • Have access to a phone so that you can call 999.
Having a phone in the bedroom you sleep in is best.
