Castle Donington Fire Station Outdoor safety
As the weather improves we’d like to share some tips that will help you enjoy the outdoors safely and make the most of the summer. Barbecuing • Keep a bucket of water, sand or a garden hose nearby for emergencies. • Never leave a lit barbecue unattended. • Never use a barbecue indoors or in a tent. • Do not store gas cylinders inside your home. • Keep children and pets away from the barbecue when lit. • Do not use disposable barbecues in dry grassland or in BBQ and Fire free zones, this will include a lot of parks and nature reserves. Garden Fires • Site bonfi res away from trees, shrubs, fences and buildings. • Don’t light bonfi res on a gusty day as they will burn more fi ercely and can fl are up and spread unexpectedly • Make sure garden fi res are contained, ideally in an incinerator or fi re pit. • Don’t use fl ammable liquids like petrol or

paraffi n to start fi res. • Have a garden hose available in case of emergencies. • Make sure the fi re is fully extinguished, with no hot embers, before you leave it. • Think of your neighbors and ensure smoke from bonfi res doesn’t affect them.
There are no laws against having bonfi res in your garden but there are laws for the nuisance they may cause.
