Let’s talk about ‘Features’…

Have you ever wondered what you can do to highlight some of the walls in your home? If you are still sitting on the fence, I might just try and twist your arm and get you started with some of the do’s and don’ts for adding a feature wall, sometimes also called an ‘accent wall’.

Firstly, let’s focus on how you can easily identify a suitable wall to create a strong feature for any room. A well thought through feature wall gives you the perfect opportunity to experiment with unique ideas, adding textures, shapes, colours, or patterns. It is very satisfying and rewarding and will ultimately improve the style of your room. A chimney breast, a fi replace, the wall behind your TV, or the wall where the headboard is situated in the bedroom are all ideal places for an eye popping feature wall. Take notice of all the unsightly obstructions such as radiators, sockets and light switches. If they can be removed, disguised, or re-positioned, I would defi nitely recommend this. If you just want a quick makeover, wall paint is the quickest and the most inexpensive option. Do consider using a complimentary colour for the paint to ensure it fi ts in with the existing colour scheme. Avoid randomly choosing a bold colour that screams at you, as it may not fi t well with the rest of the room.

For an open-plan living space, a feature wall can help to defi ne and divide between dining and family/living areas. Wall paneling, stone, tiles, wall paper or murals are other more interesting ideas you can use to create a feature wall in the area. An exposed brick wall is a ready made feature wall which requires very little effort to make it shine, all you need is to rearrange your furniture and accessorise accordingly.

You can certainly make any wall work, but often the focal point of the room is incorrectly identifi ed. Choosing the right one is crucial in helping you to achieve the best results. Avoid making simple but costly mistakes by randomly choosing one. The goal is to help draw your attention to the most prominent aspect of the room and let your eyes soak in the beautiful details of your creation.

Choose your room wisely as not all rooms look good with a feature wall. An over crowded room will require de-cluttering to make it feel more cohesive and less chaotic. Once you have chosen the right room, be committed, confi dent and be bold! For small rooms, avoid having a feature wall. It will be wiser to use one bold colour, pattern or texture on all the walls rather than trying just one feature wall. After all, the reason you started the process was to enhance your space and not to feel underwhelmed with the end result!
