Getting Orpington to know Bark Hart House c1910
Lost Houses – Bark Hart House This month we commence our journey back in time to take a look at some of the great houses that once graced this area. Sadly, none of these now exist but small reminders often remain – e.g. perhaps in a location or road name.
Aerial view of All Saints church showing Bark Hart House adjacent to it, with Court Lodge Farm on the left c1930
Bark Hart House is one example. Located next to All Saints Church, it was demolished in 1955 to make way for a significant extension to the parish church. Today it is remembered by the road name – Bark Hart Road. Sir Percival Hart of Lullingstone, acquired the manor of Orpington from Henry VIII in the early 16th century. Sir Percival built a manor house close to the church, possibly on the foundations of older buildings. The new manor house came to be known as Bark Hart House.
Did you know?
The house was made famous when in 1573 Queen Elizabeth I visited while en route to Canterbury.
When the building of the church extension commenced a tunnel containing human bones was found.
There are two legends telling how the house got its name. The first involves a pageant Sir Percival presented for the Queen's entertainment of a sea conflict with a ship or barque, and the Queen was so pleased with this that she gave the house the name of Barque Hart which over time became Bark Hart. [‘Barque’ meaning a sailing ship with 3 or more masks]. The second is that the Queen was kept awake all night by the barking of local dogs. We will probably never know the truth. At some point in its history the building was used as a boy’s school (see image 3). The final occupiers of the house were the Orpington Urban District Council (OUDC) who used it as offices.
Bark Hart House Academy c 1780
At that time it was determined that there was a need to increase the capacity of the parish church in order to meet the requirements of the rapidly expanding town. Therefore, when the OUDC departed, the house was demolished in 1955 making way for the extension of All Saints parish church. The extension would provide an additional 400 seats and was larger than the whole of the earlier church! Star letter Here is a photo of our new ‘since lockdown’ rescue dog Grimm having a gentle moment with my son Lloyd. Grimm was badly treated in his old home and is now slowly getting over his nervousness of men and fear of being abandoned. He absolutely loves his walks and is never far from a tennis ball, he spends hours chasing them and will often snooze with one in his mouth. He has had a sniff and wag (and occasional bark) party with most dogs of the area in Willet Rec over the past few months and thanks to all the patient owners who let Grimm meet their dogs. Marriage
Marriage is a special thing It makes us feel complete. We’ve found the one we love the most From all the men we meet. But here’s some things we won’t admit, And I think it’s time we do. So let me list them for you, here is just a few. Men have selected hearing, Unless you mention sport. He cannot find the washing machine Or the washing left to sort. He forgets to buy you flowers or bring you home a treat. And what an earths that awful smell that’s coming from his feet? He always fails to notice when you’ve done things to your hair. You’re going out and looking nice and taken extra care. But then he will surprise, you by doing something nice. Bringing you a cup of tea or giving you advice. He carries heavy shopping and drives you to the station. It is the little things in life that fill you with elation. So relish your relationship, it’s really rather great. Although we think they’re useless, we thank God for our first date!

Del (aka Del Boy)
Derrick Shutt has worked as a roadsweeper in Orpington for the last eight years, and has previously worked for the last 15 years in the profession including places like Bromley and Beckenham. He lives in Abbey Wood and cycles to work on his electric bicycle to get the job he loves done. What does you job entail Del? We work on a shift system and there are three of us keeping the roads of Orpington High Street and beyond clean. My shift is 1pm-10pm, while Neil and Rob do shifts so that we cover Orpington around the clock.
What’s changed in Orpington for the better/worse? It’s tricky at the moment given the lockdown situation, but Orpington has gone a bit downhill at times in the past, but always manages to pick up again around Christmas and the High Street gets packed. There are some nice people in the community and really nice shop owners. What’s been great lately is that over lockdown a lot of shop owners and restaurant and café owners have been doing up their shops. Some of the cafes are unbelievable inside and that’s lovely to see. I do wish we could introduce drinking taps along the High Street though. They have them in Welling and it’s worked well.
What do you like most about your job? I like to talk to people and I get some lovely comments from some really nice people. The best bit is being thanked and feeling proud that I’ve helped keep Orpington clean and safe. It’s very hard to keep the high street clean, so when you receive thanks from people, it’s lovely to hear.
Do you feel there’s a good community spirit in Orpington? Look, you’re always going to get your troublemakers – the bad ones as I call them and it’s not just the kids. But the majority of people are keen to keep the peace in Orpington and want to look after our community spaces and this includes putting rubbish in the designated bins along the high street.
If you could introduce a new shop to the high street, what would it be? An art and crafts shop. People could go in, have a cup of tea or sandwich or cake and they can do arts and crafts in there. I think Orpington would do well having one of those.

MAYOR’S VOICE… It’s been another busy month and I feel I’ve really turned a corner in getting things put into place as I settle into my role. In terms of switching things up a gear, I’ve got two significant announcements to make this month. The first is that I’m going to be launching a new podcast and interviewing small businesses to give them a platform on which to share their news and successes, as well as people in the local community. I’m a huge believer in doing what we can to support local business; they are the backbone of our community, helping keep money in the local economy. By having conversations with them, I’m hoping to raise awareness of them and help bring people together. Keep an eye on the Facebook page (mayorofbromley) for upcoming announcements. The second is that I’ve launched a fantastic prize draw to win a “fly a Spitfire” flight! Tickets cost £10, running until May 2021, for a prize that’s worth over £2,500! The money raised will help both Chartwell Cancer Trust and Cystic Fibrosis Supporters – so please dig deep and give yourself the chance to win the flight of a lifetime and you can enter as many times as you like! Meanwhile, I hosted my debut Charity Appeal event of the year, Pimm’s O’Clock, for afternoon tea, managing to raise much needed funds for the two aforementioned charities. Talking of local support, I received a cheque from Beckenham Building Suppliers recently and it got me thinking that it would be great for local businesses to come up with unique ways of raising money for the charities. I will happily invite them into my Mayoral Parlour to join my podcast and promote their business in return. I’ve been out and about meeting numerous schools and nurseries before the summer holidays including Poverest Primary School, Riverside School, Midfield Primary School and Harris Primary Academy Beckenham, along with Monkey Puzzle Day Nursery and Biggin Hill Primary. I think that given the lockdown and straight into the summer holidays, parents will really start to appreciate the incredible work that teachers do – and gain a little insight into the daily pressures that they face. Hat’s off to them.
thank those
who had been making bags and masks for the NHS, a chat with Greener and Cleaner Bromley and a Zoom meeting with the Croydon Mayor to name a few. I also represented the borough in Tatsfield for the unveiling of a beautiful floral carpet display in commemoration of the Battle of Britain and I cut a few more ribbons to officially open new shops and premises. I received a warm welcome at the Nugent Shopping Centre, organised by the centre manager - Tina Powley, to thank the centre’s support team and the essential stores that stayed open during lockdown. These included Metro Bank, M&S, Pets At Home and Superdrug. I also spotted a couple of the van traders that were open so I went along to say hello. Last but not least, I joined the Food Bank in Bromley to thank them in person for what they do. In the past the centre has come under scrutiny, with some claiming that people take advantage of the service. However, that’s certainly not the case; the Food Bank’s recommendations come from places like the Citizen’s Advice Bureau and via GPs and they do a fantastic job in providing meals to those most in need. As you can see, I’ve still very much been out and about meeting people – those who have made a difference to the borough. My aim is to be a Mayor for the people and this means that it’s important that I’m approachable and out there meeting those who make a difference. If you’d like to find out more please email the Mayor’s office – mayors.office@bromley. gov.uk Cllr Hannah Gray Mayor of Bromley
Meanwhile, it’s great news from a technology perspective. I ran a full council meeting on Webex video conferencing recently; after solving the dilemma of having no electricity in the Mayor’s Parlour, it all went really smoothly. I also joined a few Zoom meetings including the Rotary Satellite in Orpington to

ChildAid to Eastern Europe
Location:
5 Walters Yard, Bromley, BR1 1QA (behind Sainsbury’s)
What service do you provide?
We help disadvantaged children turn their lives around in some of Europe’s poorest areas in Belarus, Moldova, Siberia and Ukraine. Not the usual area of charitable concern, but an area in desperate need and where ChildAid has been exclusively active since 1973. We prevent child abandonment by supporting families in their times of need and supporting babies and children who have been abandoned. We give children a voice through education and play facilities and help transform lives and attitudes to disability through direct action of free to access rehabilitation. We create firm foundations for children, young people and families living in precarious conditions due to poverty, abuse, abandonment or civil war.
Who is it available to?
Any child or family in need that we become aware of and we have the capacity to support.
How are you funded?
Predominantly we are funded from individuals and churches who give regularly, including through our child sponsorship programme, or with one-off gifts. We also have wonderful support from local business and grant making trusts.
Do you accept donations?
Any financial donations of any type are always welcome. We also welcome items for recycling such as jewellery, watches, old cameras, mobile phones, bank notes (UK and overseas, old and current), home printer ink cartridges. These can be delivered to our offices or we can provide envelopes for the smaller items.
Do you run any events?
We only run very occasional events and have none planned for the foreseeable future
Are you looking for volunteers?
Five times a year we send out a newsletter and volunteers are always welcome to help stuff envelopes with the magazines and letters. Tea, coffee, biscuits and friendly chat are offered.
How else can people help?
We deliver talks on our work, and so we’d love any contact with social interest groups who have visiting speakers. We do not charge a fee but welcome any donations. If readers shop online, sign up to our Give As You Live page (www.giveasyoulive.com/join/ childaidee) where over 4,000 retailers will donate a percentage of purchases at no cost to the reader. We also sell lovely Christmas cards and a range of Eastern European gifts such as hand-painted Russian dolls and Christmas tree decorations. All are available from our office or via the website. My name is Michelle, and I am passionate about what I do.
We at Gracious Care understand difficult situations. We deal with them all the time. Sometimes we need a little help to do even the basic things.
I work locally as a Celebrant, in and around Orpington. Having been an Orpington resident for most of my life, I feel it is important to work closely with the community that I live in, and as a result of that, I have also co-founded The Bereavement Café in Orpington. So, my role as a Celebrant is to work with families who have lost a loved one and help them create a unique and fitting ceremony, to help them say goodbye.
With the help of Gracious Care, our customers remain independent, giving their relatives peace of mind.
But I have also introduced something called, “Remember Me” and that is to help people document their wishes before they die. This is a really simple way of instructing your loved ones with what you want, when that time comes. We can discuss everything from music choices, your life story, colours, themes, and have it all recorded safely, so that when the time comes your family members aren’t left scratching their heads trying to work out what you would have wanted.

Orpington Priory
The venerable old building of Orpington Priory has long been a focal point for Orpington, including being home to Orpington library for a number of years. The building is now looked after by an organisation called V22, which has a number of sites in and around London. At their sites, they are committed to nurturing the talents of creatives by offering them space to work and to display their work. Life in Orpington went down to meet the creative businesses that work there and discover what they think of their creative space...
What do you most enjoy working at Priory studios? “I love the 1960s building , the space it gives me to work, being part of an artistic community and as our magazine is all about the natural world I’m of course a huge fan of the gardens!” Victoria, Rakes Progress
What are your thoughts on the studio’s location?
What’s the best thing about working here? “The students and the variety of people; we have lots of people making lots of different things. We have hand-builders, we have throwers and people specialising in different things. It’s an enriching place to work.” Cat, The Clay Room UK
“It’s a nice community of creatives. Everyone’s very vibrant and enthusiastic about what they do. It’s very affordable; it’s a decent area. I grew up around here so it’s familiar to me already. It’s not that far from where I live so it’s easy to get to as well.” Holly, The Machinist Company
“It’s a fantastic place and the Priory is a great building. I am a craftsman so I like the quiet and the view. I was looking for a new space for my design studio and found it here. I’m glad I did as it’s a lovely old building and I enjoy being close to the park.” Tomasz, TS Design Studio
Do you get the opportunity to meet each other away from work? “Not yet but we’d like to. Most of us havent been here for very long.. It would be nice to have a space where we could all meet.” Collette, Collette Dawn Jewellery
lifeinmagazines.co.uk
“The location is pretty much ideal. It’s close to both the Walnuts and Nugent shopping centres which is great for grabbing items for projects - Hobbycraft being close is a godsend. Likewise, cleaning items and food are easily accessible, as are a number of DIY shops which is extremely handy for me. And being next to the beautiful gardens means that I can take a break, have a change of scenery and it is generally lovely and quiet.” Joanna, Sought & Styled
Is there anything you’d change about the space? “It would be good to have some additional storage. I do furniture and I am limited by space so it would be nice to have a dumping ground.” Joanna, Sought & Styled “I think all of us are quite keen to paint the inside of the building. If the company that owns the building were to give us the paint, we would all chip in to paint it.” Holly, The Machinist Company

How to…prepare your child for school
Kids will soon be returning to school, but this year they face even more challenges to mental and emotional health than ever. Best-selling author, TEDx speaker and Psychotherapist Jodi Aman, LCSW, has a few tips to help out parents and their kids prepare…
1. Feel comfortable with your decision to send them back or homeschool. Remind yourself that you are empowered rather than
disempowered. Especially with kids going back to school with COVID still rampant in many parts of our country, we deeply feel the "no choice" conundrum. But within every action you take you do have a choice.
2. Get your kids used to and comfortable with masks by wearing them frequently. Let them build up to many hours a day so they get
used to it. Have them do different activities with a mask so it becomes second nature. Don't spend energy hating the mask, this exhausts you and can make you kids feel anxious and troubled.
3. Role-play setting limits. This situation may increase times when other children
aren't respecting your child's space. Some kids are not kinesthetically aware and may need to be reminded frequently to physically distance. Help your kids find the words to ask for space when they are in these situations. Practise doing this until they feel more comfortable.
4. Give them tips on what to do if they are bullied. One consequence of people feeling out of control is
that they bully others to try to get a sense of control back. Just like every other year, make sure you speak to your kids about what to do if and when they are bullied.
5. Practise no face-touching. Try to come up with fun ways to learn not to touch one's
face. The masks may help with this, but there may be times when physical distancing is possible and they may take masks off, like during lunch, before washing their hands and not having ever had to have this awareness, they may need to practise this.

Q: Do you have any activity suggestions for when I visit my elderly grandma? I’d like to suggest things that she and I can look forward to doing together but won’t tire her out too much! A:
There are plenty of activities you can explore together and I’m sure she’d really appreciate looking forward to trying new activities. You could…show her technology such as Facetime, create music together using simple instruments, sit for portraits of each other, look through boxes of old letters or photos, listen to music, make a scrapbook of clips and pictures, write a poem together for Life In Orpington magazine (or even do the crossword for the chance to win a prize!), complete a jigsaw, watch a film, have a picnic in the garden or go for a drive in the country, just to name a few!
Tony & Eniko, Compassion Homecare
Q: My child is two years old, has limited vocabulary, occasionally makes eye contact and rarely plays with other children. What are some professionals that I could make contact with for assessments? A:
You can contact Health Visitors Bromley on 020-8320 5747 or email ox-trdutyhvbromley@nhs.net and should also make time to see your GP too. Children and Family Centres run baby hubs which are run jointly by health visitors and children centre team in Lewisham. The number for the Children Speech Language Therapy at Bromley is 020-8315 4706 and in Lewisham it’s 020 7138 1464. You can also get in touch with Lewisham Health Visiting Service if you live in Lewisham borough - see www.lewishamcfc.org.uk
Frances Begyinah, Bubbly Nursery for Special Needs Children
Q: I’m looking at selling my property but it needs a bit of a spruce up to get some interest. What are some budget-friendly ideas to give it a new lease of life?
Q: In terms of meat, I only eat chicken but I would like to spice it up a bit for my evening meals. What’s a great way of doing this?
A: Marinating chicken is a great way of adding flavour and prevents chicken from drying out when cooking. A great marinade to prepare Turkish style, based on four chicken breasts, is one teaspoon of natural plain yoghurt, juice of a lemon, 4 garlic cloves crushed, 1 teaspoon of ground white pepper, crushed black pepper, oregano. Mix all the ingredients in a bowl, put in the chicken breasts and leave in the fridge overnight or for a minimum of six hours before cooking. Izzy, The Bank
A: You don’t need to spend thousands to increase the value of your property and attract new buyers; just a few small enhancements can help get the ball rolling. Ideas for a £100 spend or under include a fresh lick of paint on walls, ceilings and skirting boards, replacing worn out rugs, cleaning all mirrors and windows, washing curtains/net curtains and making sure there are enough storage solutions. Swap your beach bags for tea bags! APH has revealed the home comforts Brits can’t travel abroad without, with mobile phones, tea and hair straighteners topping the British traveller’s list. Perhaps unsurprisingly to some, nearly a fifth of those surveyed said they couldn’t go abroad without packing their own tea bags and the reason behind this is that other countries just can’t brew a proper cuppa like the Brits! The survey revealed that tea-lovers are loyal folk and like to drink their regular brand of tea rather than those found abroad with some holidaymakers even admitting to packing kettles and sugar to ensure their ‘tea tipple’ is up to scratch! It was also revealed that nearly half of Brits can’t travel abroad without their mobile phones, with the main reasons being because they can display boarding cards, stream TV shows, play music and drown out noise onboard flights!
After having my annual overseas holiday cancelled, I’m thinking of a mini staycation. I fancy a change of scenery and some inspiration. Any ideas? A recent survey by Swift Go revealed that almost 70% of people who were planning on going abroad this summer had it cancelled due to COVID-19. There are a few different staycation ideas you can try – the most popular being countryside cottage stays, motorhome holidays and camping. Alternatively, why not opt for something different like a park resort, city break or barging holiday. There are plenty of options for the whole family. Jude Greene-Steward, Shore Travel

Get a great night’s sleep!
The health benefits associated with having a good night’s rest are plentiful – both physically and mentally. Did you know for example that sleep plays a very important role in helping us maintain a healthy weight and hormone balance? When we sleep our heart and blood vessels heal and repair too. And from a mental health perspective, our brains function better when we’ve had a great night’s sleep. We’re better at solving problems, thinking on our feet, dealing with stress and our learning is improved. But with some of us suffering from insomnia or having bad dreams, it starts to affect our day-to-day lives. So what can we do? Here, The Bed Post (with stores in Petts Wood, Crayford, Sevenoaks and Sidcup) outlines eight practical tips that you can put in place to wind down and prepare yourself for a great night’s sleep…
5 reasons to move now! 1. The housing market is buoyant The current housing market is varied and buoyant following a reboot. With the recent government announcements, there are numerous opportunities open for those who are looking for their first home, are keen to move to a new home or want to add to their current portfolio.
1. Aim to be regular with your bedtime routine – try to go to bed at the same time each night and get up at the same time each morning. 2. Use low wattage bulbs or dimmer switches rather than artificial lights. 3. Avoid drinking an hour before bed, especially caffeine or alcohol. 4. Try and spend more time outside during the day to soak up the vitamin D. 5. However much you are tempted to, don’t have a nap during the day. 6. Refrain from eating just before bedtime. If you need to have a snack, make sure it’s something light. 7. Reduce your blue light exposure before bed – this means switching off your phone or tablet and not being tempted to look at it before bed. 8. Exercise regularly – but not just before bed. Aim for a gentle walk during the day if possible.
COLOUR ME BEAUTIFUL... A fresh lick of paint on worn-out walls, ceilings and skirting boards can astonishingly boost the value of a property by an average of £1,424 according to research from PriceYourJob.co.uk.
2. No stamp duty The most recent government announcement about the housing market outlined an immediate stamp duty holiday up until March 2021 for homes up to £500,000. With low interest rates, property prices have not changed and so no losses will be incurred.
3. Job security is good at present As the economy reopens, overall job security is looking more positive and the furlough scheme has been extended with bonuses for potential employers up until the end of January 2021. Whilst this is the case, it’s a good time - especially for first time homebuyers - to start looking at getting on the property ladder.
4. You’ll be settled by Christmas If you start the process now, you may be in and settled by the busy Christmas period – which in terms of stress, will be much less hassle than having completions and move in dates so last minute.
SMALL GARDEN? No problem! The spacesaving Clever Pots range from wilko will get your garden fit to bursting with pretty flowers. Prices for the range start at just £1 for a Wilko Plant Pot Wall Bracket 20cm, a vertical display that screws easily onto walls and fences, quickly adding style to any small space.

Change up your low mood
Feeling blue? Here’s 3 activities you could do every day to help challenge your low mood. 1. Challenging Negative Thoughts: When we have negative thoughts, these can often be overwhelming. However, if we challenge these thoughts, we can often find that there is no truth to them. By challenging negative thoughts, we can replace our irrational negative thoughts with more rational alternatives. Pick a specific negative thought and ask yourself the following questions: Is there substantial evidence for my thought? Is there any evidence contrary to my thought? What would a friend think about this situation? If I look at the situation positively, how is it different? Will this matter a year from now? How about 5 years from now? 2. Gratitude Diary: Being thankful throughout the day can also help to boost our mood, as it can help us to re-orientate how we feel. Try setting some time during your day to ask yourself and reflect on the following question: What three things am I grateful for today?
Live Life On The Veg!
How about this for something different… The Vegetarian Special My Tasty Cookbook from Hacche is a fully customisable cookbook with a catalogue of over 300 recipes to choose from. All you have to do is pick your favourite foods and recipes. With 18 chapters available, you select six of your favourites from Quick Eats, 5 Items or Less, Meal Pastas and Bakes, Chocolate, One Pot Wonders, Recipes for Kids, Dinner Party, Cheese, Desserts and many more. Every recipe, every chapter and every ingredient are utilised, removing any components you dislike in the process, meaning the cookbook only has foods and recipes you like. It’s a great gift idea for vegetarians, especially as you can select a personalised cover and add the recipient’s name. It costs from £18.99 and can be purchased from MyTastyCookbook.com
lifeinmagazines.co.uk
3. Behavioural Activation: When we are struggling with motivation, we can often find it difficult to do activities we would usually find easy to do. By using behavioural activation, we can try to raise our motivation levels. Create a schedule of activities that will lead you to having positive experiences during the day. Start with simple goals and work your way up to more challenging activities. If you’ve achieved your activities (even if it's only one), reward yourself with a self-care activity or an activity that you enjoy doing. Gerard Barnes, Smart TMS
DID YOU KNOW... An online discussion, Seeing the Light, organised by pharmaceutical manufacturer Thornton & Ross, revealed that Vitamin D could help play a key role in the prevention and treatment of COVID-19. The prohormone has been studied in the treatment of other respiratory diseases, offering the potential to boost antiviral immune responses and dampen harmful inflammation.

Motorsport on a budget by RICHARD DJJ BOWDERY
To race at the pinnacle of motorsport is prohibitively expensive except, perhaps, for the uber-rich. Running a Formula One team, where millions of pounds are spent each season, is testament to that. But that’s not to say the man in the street can’t get involved. Just ask Orpington businessman Tony Martin. Tony, who runs a property management company, said: “For those considering motor racing as a hobby, the EnduroKA race series provides a cost-effective way in without a huge financial outlay.” And he should know. Some 17 months ago he, along with his two sons and two racing friends, set up M&D Racing. It was towards the end of 2018 when Tony Perfect, who Tony knew from his stock rod racing days, told him he was considering taking part in a new race series called EnduroKA. “I discussed it with my sons and it sort of all came together,” said Tony. “Fellow racer, Matt Rawlings, was drafted in and M&D Racing team was born.” The fledgling team competes in this new series which holds six races a year. Tony explained: “On average each race costs just over £1,000. But splitting the cost five ways helps make it more affordable. The £1,000 covers the race entry fee, fuel, tyres and accommodation. “Although we are self-funded we are actively looking for sponsorship. This will help us compete with better funded teams and provide potential sponsors with exposure in a well supported motorsport series.” The EnduroKA series was set up by MotorSport Vision Group — a company co-founded by former F1 driver Jonathan Palmer — which owns several iconic racing circuits across the UK. Now in its second season, the series will not only test the skills of those drivers taking part but also their endurance. With races lasting anything up to 12 hours and each driver in the car for roughly two hours at a time EnduroKA is well named. But didn’t such a long time behind the wheel with all the concentration required for racing at speed give them second thoughts? Tony Martin was emphatic: “No. If anything it made the prospect more appealing. Not only that, the whole thing has evolved from being just about five guys racing to being about teamwork and friendship.” That teamwork was needed from day one. A car had to be sourced and built, which mechanic Tony Perfect took the lead on. Then it required Matt Rowling’s skills to spray paint it in a distinctive livery. Nothing could be overlooked;

especially as the vehicle had to meet strict regulations from the EnduroKA scrutineers. But what about the risks? “It’s not something we think about while racing,” said Tony, “you have a healthy respect for the dangers. Accidents do happen but the best way to reduce the risk is in the preparation taken before each race such as checking the car’s various components to ensure everything is A1. Of course helmets, flame retardant overalls and in-car equipment such as neck supports and a full roll cage are vital to help protect the driver.” So there you have it. An economical way into motor racing is available with plenty of ‘seat time’. But if you don’t fancy getting behind the wheel yourself you could still be involved in the sport through sponsorship. Tony would love to hear from anyone interested in sponsoring the team. His email address is tonymartin.prop@googlemail.com . One final question. How did the team’s name come about? Tony Martin explained: “It originated from when Tony Perfect was a boy. His parents paid for him to take part in junior oval race meetings. The M and D stood for Mum and Dad because they paid all his racing expenses. A bit like I did for my boys. He and his father went onto build engines for oval racing cars which they called M&D Race Engines. So it seemed appropriate to continue with a name well known in our level of motorsport especially with its ‘hidden’ meaning. Tony continued: “Also I think it’s a good way to remember Tony’s dad who passed away last year.” More information on this motor racing series can be found online at enduroka.co.uk
