Welcome to Life in ORPINGTON... ...your local community magazine that has something to suit all tastes

The Team

Get to know us: In light of this month’s Chocolate Week (14th19th Oct) what’s your favourite chocolate bar? Editorial / Sales: Lauretta lauretta@lifeinmagazines.co.uk Caramac

You’ll notice that our team question this month refers to chocolate (which could probably be my specialist subject on Mastermind). And given that it’s Chocolate Week this month, what better way to celebrate than by offering some chocolate facts (courtesy of awarenessdays.com) that you might not have heard of... • White chocolate is not actually chocolate. This is because it doesn’t contain cocoa solids or chocolate liquor, meaning it isn’t chocolate in the strict sense. But it does contain parts of the cacao bean‚ mainly cocoa butter. • The Aztecs loved and valued the cacao bean so highly that they used it as currency during the height of their civilisation. • There is a rare fourth kind of chocolate in addition to the classic milk, dark, and white varieties: blond chocolate. • The first chocolate bar was invented in 1847 by Joseph Fry. In last month’s issue you might have read about the new Bromley podcast, Bromley Buzz. We were thrilled to be invited by its founder, Darren Weale, to join him and fellow co-host, Zeenat Noorani, to chat about a whole range of topics – from local menus and young entrepreneurs, to the new Life In… announcement and spinning chairs! Have a listen at https://bromleybuzz. podbean.com (episode 4). Meanwhile, from Car Engine Idling and local places to visit this Halloween, to new government laws and Breast Cancer Awareness, this month’s issue covers a whole range of topics – we hope you enjoy them all! Write and let us know what you think at hello@lifeinmagazines.co.uk Until next month, have a great October!

My name is Michelle, and I am passionate about what I do. I work locally as a Celebrant, in and around Orpington. Having been an Orpington resident for most of my life, I feel it is important to work closely with the community that I live in, and as a result of that, I have also co-founded The Bereavement Café in Orpington.

T: 01689 471001 M: 07956 516899 E: bernardcoleroofing@gmail.com

So, my role as a Celebrant is to work with families who have lost a loved one and help them create a unique and fitting ceremony, to help them say goodbye. But I have also introduced something called, “Remember Me” and that is to help people document their wishes before they die. This is a really simple way of instructing your loved ones with what you want, when that time comes. We can discuss everything from music choices, your life story, colours, themes, and have it all recorded safely, so that when the time comes your family members aren’t left scratching their heads trying to work out what you would have wanted.

I read your magazine every month and always find something of interest. In the September (#31) issue you mentioned about the new ‘greener fuel’ E10 which I have to confess I had not heard about until then. It got me thinking on another connected issue I feel strongly about – Car Engine Idling. I live in a road close to a school entrance, so obviously we have a lot of cars coming and going for the school runs. I notice especially (but not exclusively) in summer a number of cars that leave their engines running whilst waiting to collect their children. And I’m not talking a few minutes – some cars arrive half hour early to ‘grab’ a prime parking spot. This is obviously not climate friendly and definitely not helping to have cleaner air in the neighbourhood. I’m guessing this must go on at other schools in the area too. So this is really a plea to all parents to please, please switch off your engines (and perhaps go and sit under a tree if the weather is too hot to stay in the car!). Sally Mayer A really good point made Sally – we’ve covered this topic in this month’s eco feature (page 19) to help educate others on the environmental impact Car Engine Idling has.

Another lovely drawing sent in by reader, Len Hook. If you’d like to showcase something you’d made or drawn, get in touch at hello@lifeinmagazines.co.uk

What’s Your Take...? We ask for your views on topics that matter. This month’s question:

What's your favourite go-to place in the borough? Fiona Cash Goddington Park > Chelsfield Village > St Martin’s Tours Church > Chelsfield Station back to goddington - 3 miles. Amazing views of London but offers a feeling of freedom. I walk it most days. I’ve spotted parakeets, foxes, rabbits.. every day is different. We should appreciate what’s near to us!

Caroline Jenkins Scadbury for walks and Fiesta Mexicana for food, cocktails & fantastic evenings out.

Jacky Skinner Walk to Priory Gardens to photograph the squirrels and the waterfowl and back. Sometimes stopping at Primo Coffee Shop on the way home – heaven!

A GOOD JOB!

Your magazine has certainly livened up the long, dreary isolation time for me. It gave me something useful to do apart from trying to clear away the clutter that we all collect! Diana Elvin That's great to hear Diana - thank you!

Louise Allen Keston Ponds or Hawkswood for family walks. Masala Dabbas for lovely Indian food and drink with hubby. Airjump for exercise with the kids. Xenia for chill out cocktails with the girls!

Kathryn Bell High Elms and The Green Roof Cafe for an afternoon tea and The Woodman pub in Farnborough Village on a Friday with a Forcella pizza followed by a drink.

Next month’s question…

What subject or topic should be made mandatory in schools? Tag us in @lifeinmags or email a short response to hello@lifeinmagazines.co.uk

Calling all budding film makers!

Orpington Video & Film Makers is hosting a Zoom session to attract new members to the club. Club treasurer, David Laker, said: “During Covid-19 restrictions we made a number of our films available for public viewing and these were well received, with over 4,000 views and many complimentary messages left in response. With lockdown encouraging many people to take up new hobbies, we hope our films inspired some of you to give film making a go, be it with a mobile phone, tablet, DSLR or camcorder. If this sounds like you, and you have a lot of footage but are not sure what to do with it next, OVFM is here to help!” The Zoom session will be held on Friday 15th October at 8pm and will explain and illustrate what the club is all about, show some films, and answer any questions about film making. In celebration of National Poetry Day (on 7th October), here are some lovely poems sent in by a selection of readers… Please Don’t Take My Mask Away Please don’t take my mask away I like to wear it every day. It hides up all my wrinkles, And my odd-shaped nose, And if I spread it far enough My scraggy neck won’t show. I sorted out some high-heeled shoes, My skirt’s a little shorter. I passed a neighbour in the shop She thought I was my daughter. I had a glance from a nice young man In fact, some more just lately, So please don’t ask me to remove my mask As they will know I’m eighty. Maureen Hiller

The Days Of The Virus The silence came later only for those who cared to listen. First, havoc and disarray governed. Time took a different rhythm for those locked inside. But outside the window the world kept on going without us. The wind blew, the sun shone in the morning, the moon rose at night and seemed not to care. Time became dense and fluid at once. The days went by drop by drop and each drop echoed in the empty cavities of our existence. Shadows rammed us down to our darkest alleys. At first, people screamed, then laughed, then cried, then stopped altogether and finally stood still. We all watched and listen to those in charge. We then saw we were the ones in charge. So, we knew it! We held hands even though there were no hands to be held. Claudia Colella

Sarah Spencer-Adams

Kathryn Bell nominated Sarah Spencer-Adams, an NHS worker that specialises in palliative care nursing, for the work she has done in the community. Kathryn said: “Sarah goes above and beyond for her community and has a passion and desire to help people, not only through her volunteering roles but in her spare time too. Sarah is always willing to help anyone and really helped me throughout Covid - nothing is too much trouble and I would like to say a big thank you!” We’d like to second Kathryn’s nomination for Sarah, who kindly offered to become a ‘Friend’ of Life In Orpington to help distribute the magazine locally, despite holding down a job and various other responsibilities. Thanks Sarah – you truly are a community star!

Sarah, we’ve heard a lot about your community work – can you describe what you’re currently involved in? Of course - I volunteer one day a week at the Bromley Food Bank, a Trussell Trust food bank. We have been very busy over the past few months, as the pandemic has sadly increased the demand for our service. We pack up vital food parcels for individuals & families in need. I also help to obtain supplies for Safe Haven Animal Rescue based in Worlds End Lane Orpington. I look out for free pet food and other items that either can be sold to raise funds or can be used directly to help the rescued animals. I find the items on Facebook or other sites & drive all over Bromley, picking items up. People are so immensely generous and often donate extra things, to help us. My car has been transformed from a car into a delivery van! I also make up ‘Mugs Filled With Treats’, recycled mugs filled with goodies that we sell to raise funds. We have stalls at Fun Days & Table Top Sales. I help to reduce food and other waste by participating in Olio – an app that helps to redistribute surplus items of food or non-food. Friends and colleagues often give me things that they no longer need that I then redistribute via the app. I have also become a member of the local Rotary Club in Orpington. Rotary is an international humanitarian organisation. As such, I have recently been involved in helping a mum clear her very overgrown garden. Her young son has been in hospital for many months and her garden inevitably, as she stayed with him at the hospital, became completely overgrown. I’ve helped coordinate a team to clear the garden ready for the little boy’s discharge from hospital. When I’m not working or volunteering, I like to relax with my partner & our rescue puppy cockerpoo, who keeps us busy & amused. I like the countryside & coast, reading, keeping up with current affairs and social history.

How do you feel about being nominated by Kathryn? I am very surprised but also very honoured and grateful. I value the opportunity to be able to share some of the community organisations locally and hope it inspires others to become involved if they can.

lifeinmagazines.co.uk

Why was it important for you to get involved in helping your local community? I think participating in community activities is invaluable. It’s very rewarding too – you get to know your fellow neighbours and it’s very satisfying if you can help those that need it too. I now value the opportunity to use the skills and knowledge I have gained from my working life, in voluntary work. I never forget the faces of all those who pick up food parcels from us at the food bank; a smile literally comes back to their faces.

Have you been involved in anything else community-related locally? I’ve helped to provide furnishings and nice things for the newly created staff wellbeing hub at the PRUH. This is a quiet, peaceful place for staff to rest and recuperate away from the clinical area. Again, I’ve collected items from local web sites. I recently put out a request for garden furniture for the outside space of the hub and was overwhelmed with donations of really nice nearly new furniture, meaning staff can relax in the sunshine.

What is it you love most about our local area? And how important are community schemes and local charities do you think? I love the generosity of people locally. When donations are asked for, we always receive way more than we expect and people are so willing to help. As human beings we need connection to each other, connection helps us to grow and develop. Charities and community schemes help us to come together, as a whole to learn and support each other. The challenges of the past year have emphasised how important connection is to us all. A special ‘Thank You’ to Sue at Time For Flowers for sponsoring the bouquets for our Local Heroes. Do you want to nominate a local hero? Email hello@lifeinmagazines.co.uk

(DEPUTY) MAYOR’S VOICE Both myself and The Mayor have been increasingly busy as Covid restrictions ease and we have been pleased to accept all the invitations received if we possibly can. We have been delighted to see the success of major local events including music festivals, Petts Wood Calling and Priory Live, as well as the May Queen crowning ceremonies in Orpington and Petts Wood, the latter being part of the annual May Fayre (just a little late this year!). Crofton Roman Villa hosted the launch of the latest in a series of booklets published by Dr Brian Philp and his excellent band of archaeologists, fellow authors and helpers. If you haven’t visited, the Villa has been in a 33year partnership between the London Borough of Bromley and local archaeologists and offers a superb insight into how much Roman history can be found locally. Dr Philp is an inspirational enthusiast, as many local school children can testify. Some things have survived throughout Covid, and the Monkey Puzzle Nursery in Sevenoaks Road opened by the previous Mayor, Cllr Hannah Gray, celebrated a successful first year with an anniversary fete and barbecue, which I attended, and was hosted by Joanna Whelan and Becky Walters.

Although Orpington is the main town centre, our outer London suburb is effectively made up of a number of village communities. We were Councillor Tony Owen delighted to celebrate the retirement, after 41 years, of Kerry and Theo Kokkinos and his delightful family, who ran Farnborough Village Post Office. They were presented with a certificate and letter signed by the Mayor, in a street ceremony organised by the local village society. This also gave an opportunity for local residents to welcome Mrs Swarna Arulanantham and Mr Arulanantham Ramasamy to the post office and the continuation of this increasingly valuable local service. As always, if you would like the Mayor to celebrate the opening or anniversary of your business, charity or society; or to thank our many voluntary and largely unsung helpers who do so much for our community, the Mayor’s office will be delighted to arrange it. Councillor Tony Owen Deputy Mayor of Bromley 2021-22

Lines from Linda

writing about it has turned me to pick up a pen and add cake to my shopping list.

Rants, raves & musings from actress & author Linda Regan I have no idea why, but I have always been drawn to the colour pink. Fuschia pink, pastel pink, bubble-gum pink, dusty pink, any and all shades, I just love pink. So bring on October as it is the official Pink Month. When I was single I bought a bungalow. I called it Blancmange Bungalow, and I painted and furnished every part of the building in a variety of pink colouring: radiators, curtains, flooring, walls, bedding, inside doors, outside doors, roof… nothing escaped the pink paint tin or Laura Ashley’s perfect Did pink patterns. (Needless to say, it took me over a year to sell it). No one I know, and I feel sure, no one you know, doesn’t know someone who has been through that very dark frightening tunnel called Breast Cancer, which is represented by the pink ribbon.

community

Macmillan Cancer Support (the charity that supports patients going through the journey of cancer), has introduced coffee and cake initiatives, so we can buy loads of cake, invite our friends around and feel happy and satisfied that, as we tuck in, we are also collecting much needed donations from our guests for doing the same.

"

Whatever, and however, you celebrate National Doughnut Day, and pink ribbon month, I hope you have fun. We are officially out of lockdown and can catch up with our friends, so all this seems a perfect time.

pink!

Phew! All this talk of cake has really got my juices flowing. I am off to The Drawing Room in Locksbottom which serves the most wonderful selection of home-made cakes.

I tell you, I love the colour

This is our month to support the bravery of everyone involved in fighting that disease, and we are offered the opportunity to help in a very enjoyable way. The good news is that this month also boasts National Doughnut Day, and who can resist one of those warm, jam-oozing, smartie-speckled or chocolate-spread delights? Just

Oh, and if you are coming to my Macmillan cake morning, I am serving iced buns with your tea or coffee, and they will all be iced in pink icing. (Did I tell you, I love the colour pink)! For more about me and my crime novels see www.lindareganonline.co.uk

Eco News Switch off your engines!

Inspired by our ‘Star Response’ letter this month from reader Sally Mayer (page 7), we look at some of the facts associated with Car Engine Idling (when you leave a car engine running while parked up). • •

The Royal College of Physicians estimate 40,000 deaths a year in the UK are linked to air pollution, with engine idling contributing to this. Car engine idling is actually an offence; the RAC

•

website reports that Rule 123 of The Highway Code looks at ‘The Driver and the Environment’, stating that drivers must not leave a parked vehicle unattended with the engine running or leave a vehicle engine running unnecessarily while that vehicle is stationary on a public road. Local authorities have the power to issue £20 fixed penalties for emission offences and stationary idling. According to confused.com, research has found that an idling car causes enough emissions to fill 150 balloons with harmful pollutants – every minute.

SAVE THE SHARKS

Go wide!

The government is to introduce a world-leading ban on shark fin trade, banning the imports and exports of detached shark fins and products containing them in a bid to promote shark conservation. Endangered and overfished species including shortfin mako and blue shark are among those to benefit from greater protection. And in another first, the UK is leading a global campaign, supported by over 80 countries, for at least 30% of the world’s land and ocean to be protected by 2030.

CO2 monitors will soon be provided to all state-funded education settings so that staff can quickly identify where ventilation needs to be improved. Letting fresh air into indoor spaces can help remove air that contains virus particles and is important in preventing the spread of Covid-19.

Food & Drink DID SOMEONE SAY CAKE?

According to a survey by nabim (National Association of British and Irish Millers), 21% of home bakers choose chocolate cake as their favourite cake to bake. It also showed that a whopping 73% of home bakers have made a chocolate cake, which equates to nearly a quarter of the UK population! With this month’s Chocolate Week in mind, the Easy Peasy Baking campaign has shared this gloriously simple recipe for a two-layered chocolate fudge cake – enjoy!

Ingredients

Sponge: Icing: - 175g self-raising flour - 300g dark or milk - 1 tsp bicarbonate of soda chocolate - 150g soft light brown sugar - 150ml/g double - 50g cocoa powder cream (cold) - 2 eggs - 150ml/g sunflower oil - 150ml/g milk

Equipment - 2 x 15cm round cake tins lined with baking paper - Mixing bowl - Whisk - Microwaveable bowl - Icing spatula/knife

Method - - - - - -

Preheat the oven to 160°C. In the mixing bowl, combine the flour, bicarbonate, sugar and cocoa powder. Add in the eggs, oil and milk and whisk everything together until no lumps remain. Divide the batter into the two cake tins and bake for 20-25 minutes until springy in the centre. Allow to cool completely before icing. Whilst the sponges are cooling, melt the chosen chocolate for the icing in the microwave (in 30 second increments and stirring to prevent burning). Once it is melted completely, pour in the cold double cream and combine until glossy and smooth. Sandwich the two sponges with the icing before covering the top and sides. Decorate as you wish.

Go au naturel! Celebrity nutritionist, Rob Hobson, claims that food is the ultimate medicine! He says: “The UK grows and produces an abundance of fresh produce that is stocked on our supermarket shelves. Most consumers are unaware that natural foods are as effective, if not more effective than taking supplements to boost our health. For example, British and Irish farmers and growers are enriching mushrooms with vitamin D, with just eight providing 100% of your daily recommended intake (RI). Mushrooms are also a natural source of vitamins B2, B3, B5 and B6, with one 100g serving of Vitamin B6 mushrooms providing 30% of your daily recommended intake (RI).”

Rob’s healthy lifestyle tips include: • • • • •

Cook from scratch during the week to ensure you are consuming healthier meals. Use a selection of simple, natural ingredients and avoid using processed foods. Incorporate vitamin D enriched mushrooms into at least one meal every day. If you can’t get your hands-on vitamin D enriched mushrooms and can only find regular mushrooms, place them in the windowsill when the sun is out, and they become a source of vitamin D. Drink a minimum of two litres of water a day. This helps to cleanse toxins from your body, provides you with energy and helps fatigue. Go outside for at least an hour's walk or daily exercise each day in the fresh air. Exercise can improve your health and reduce the risk of developing diseases like type 2 diabetes, cancer and cardiovascular disease. Limit foods high in harmful fat, sugar or salt. Replace saturated fats with unsaturated fats, and reduce consumption of sugary and salty snacks, opting for low sodium products instead.

Ask The Experts

lifestyle

Q: What is a power flush and how do I know if my home needs one? A:

Power flushing is important to the health of a central heating system. It combines high-velocity water and carefully-selected chemicals to remove the inevitable build-up of dirt, scale and corrosion from inside your radiators. A successful flush will ensure the efficient operation of your heating system, which will heat quickly and cut costs on your utility bill. You’ll know you need a power flush if you notice one or more of the following symptoms - certain rooms feel colder than others, it takes your system a long time to warm up, any of your radiators are cold at the bottom, your radiators need frequent bleeding and your boiler is noisy.

Ashley Cooper, AA Cooper

Q: How is Brightwater different from other cemeteries? A:

Traditionally, when a loved one passes away, we are given the choice of either cremation or in ground burial as a final resting place. At Brightwater we offer a third alternative which is above ground burial. All of our burial chambers are located indoors and above ground which suits those who struggle with the idea of being underground, and perceive it as cold, dark and vulnerable. Equally, there are people who really don’t like the idea of being cremated, so at Brightwater our chambers offer a gentler alternative option. This also means that after the day of the funeral, families then have a comfortable, indoor place to visit their loved ones, where they will always be greeted by a friendly face and can rest assured that they will never be alone.

Ian Fletcher, Brightwater Memorial Park

Q: What are considered the best seats in the theatre? A:

We are very lucky at the Churchill Theatre in that all of our seats provide a great view of the stage so could be considered the ‘best seats’. We do have a small number of restricted view seats towards the back of the Stalls and on the first row of the Circle, which we label as such, but we regularly receive compliments and feedback from audience members who come to the theatre about how great are seating is, both in terms of comfort and view of the stage.

Megan Kinsey, Bromley Churchill Theatre

Q: I’ve got a bad back – does this mean I need a hard bed to support my weak muscles? A:

Given that we spend a third of our lives sleeping, it’s important that you get the right bed for your needs. It’s up there with one of the most important purchases you’ll make when it comes to your health. As long as the bed you choose offers the correct support for your spine and sleeping position and ensures correct spinal alignment, that’s the main thing – it need not be hard at all. There’s not one type of mattress that deals with all types of back pain, but you might want to consider an orthopaedic mattress, which is specifically designed to support joints and your spine. That's why we would always say, try before you buy.

Working from home?

Here’s what you need to know about claiming expenses

If you are working from home, you may be able to claim tax relief for some of your bills. Victoria Pearson from Perrys Chartered Accountants explains what you can and can’t claim if you are working from home. My office or factory is closed and I have to work from home. What expenses can I claim? If you have to work from home, because your office or factory is closed, then you can claim tax relief, but only for the things to do with your work. These include business telephone calls or the additional cost of gas and electricity for your work area. HMRC has a set allowance at £6 a week (£26 a month) from April 2020 to cover additional costs if you have to work from home. For previous tax years this allowance is £4 a week (£18 a month). If your employer reimburses you for the cost of using your home then you cannot claim tax relief from HMRC.

I have decided to work from home permanently. Can I claim tax relief? If you are employed and you choose to work from home then you cannot claim any tax relief. However, if you are a sole trader or partnership and you set up a business from home, you can include your business costs in your self-assessment tax return. These include a proportion of the cost of things like council tax, heating, lighting etc. If you find calculating this too complicated, then you can use the set working from home allowance as stated above. You will also be able to claim for a proportion of phone calls and broadband depending on how much you use them for business purposes.

How do I make a claim for tax relief? If you are eligible for claiming tax relief and you normally complete a self-assessment tax return form, you can make your claim using this method. Otherwise, you can complete a P87 form online via your Government Gateway account or you can complete a postal form.

Do I need to keep records if I claim tax relief when having to work from home? The good news is you don’t need to keep any records to claim the working at home tax relief so long as your claim does not exceed the £6 a week entitlement from April 2020 (or £4 a week for previous tax years). However, if you believe your costs are a lot higher you could claim more, but you will need to provide proof of expenditure and workings.

What other expenses can I claim for? Whether you’re working from home or not, you might be able to claim tax relief for other expenses. For example, if you use your own money for things that you must buy for your job and you only use for your work, such as uniforms, clothing and tools; vehicles; travel and overnight expenses; and professional fees and subscriptions. For these claims you must keep records of what you’ve spent, such as receipts or invoices. You have four years from the end of the tax year in which you spent the money to make a claim. You cannot claim tax relief if your employer either gives you all the money back or provides an alternative, such as giving you a laptop but you want a different model.

How to be truly happy Are you seeking true happiness? Do you want to live a fulfilled life away from being anxious, frustrated or angry? Amelia Vogler, grounding expert and energy medicine specialist, says that there are some natural ways to create happiness and to maintain a healthy balance in your life while being grounded. Here’s her tips for cultivating happiness in everyday life. Tip #1: Look for beauty: Beauty is everywhere. It is in the way that we choose kind interactions. Beauty is visible in the flowers blooming around us. It is the time that we take to connect to family or friends outside of a busy schedule. Watch your favourite sporting event and bring appreciation to that perfect pitch or goal! Beauty inspires us, and it lightens our hearts and incites happiness.

Tip #2: Try something new: We cultivate happiness

in new moments. Take the time out of your schedule to go to a museum or take a new hike and explore areas you haven’t seen. You might even consider doing something a little daring and out of the ordinary - perhaps there is that outside dance class that has been happening in the park or a dog agility class that you’ve been eyeing for your

Breast cancer awareness October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, an annual campaign to increase awareness of the disease. Breast Cancer Now, the research and care charity, outlines symptoms that you should look out for: • A lump or swelling in the breast, upper chest or armpit • A change to the skin, such as puckering or dimpling • A change in the colour of the breast – the breast may look red or inflamed • A nipple change, for example it has become pulled in (inverted) • Rash or crusting around the nipple • Unusual liquid (discharge) from either nipple • Changes in size or shape of the breast On its own, pain in your breasts is not usually a sign of breast cancer. furry friend! Get out of the house, break your routine, and introduce something different to your day!

Tip #3: Do something nice for someone every week that doesn’t involve money: This tip comes from my amazing mum. She loves to do one thing for others every day that doesn’t involve money. She’ll cook a meal for a friend and deliver it. She’ll bring someone else a flower arrangement from her garden. She’ll get vegetables. She’ll write a note and send it. She’ll pick up a friend who has mobility issues and take them to the grocery store or go shopping for them. She’ll even weed the flower beds near your mailbox! Giving back warms the heart.

Tip #4: Smile and laugh: A smile is infectious. It is the easiest way to bring joy to yourself and others. Even if you are sitting at your computer, you might try working with a smile on your face. Let your mind drift to a happy memory, let that memory overtake the moment, and allow your body to feel the happiness and extend that to a smile. Smile at your neighbour, your mail delivery driver, your partner. Remember that you don’t know what someone is carrying in their heart at any one moment - a smile can go a long way on a challenging day!

Beauty questions answered! Local beautician, Maria Dominguez from Farnborough’s Trendy Beauty, answers your questions… Q: Can stress cause oily skin? A: Yes. There’s a direct relationship between stress and oily skin. Stress causes a chemical response in your body, which leads it to produce a higher dose of the hormone cortisol. Eventually, this causes your glands to overproduce oil.

Head’s up! Nuromol, a medicine that contains 200mg of ibuprofen and 500mg of paracetamol per tablet, will become available without the need to visit a pharmacy following a public consultation.

Half term project: Make an erupting volcano This is a classic crowd-pleasing science experiment sure to entertain kids over the half-term. You’ll need: 100ml of warm water, 10ml of dish soap, 400ml of white vinegar, an empty 2-litre bottle, 2 drops of red food colouring and baking soda slurry (½ cup baking soda and ½ cup water). Method: Mix the dish soap, water, white vinegar and

food colouring and pour it into the empty bottle. Then, make the baking soda slurry and mix it thoroughly with

a spoon until it's completely dissolved. Now, quickly but carefully pour this slurry into the bottle and step back and watch as the volcano erupts! The science behind the volcano involves a chemical reaction between an acid and a base. The acetic acid present in the vinegar reacts with the sodium hydrogen carbonate in the baking soda and produces carbon dioxide. The base (sodium hydrogen carbonate) undergoes a decomposing reaction when it is exposed to the acid which produces carbon dioxide, which causes the eruption! mytutor.co.uk

Your child’s first mobile Getting your child their first mobile phone

3 local (spooky) places to visit this Halloween

Mobile phone bills can become incredibly steep and being tied into a long contract can become very daunting. When looking at choosing your child’s first mobile phone, we don’t need to add to this burden. So here’s some tips on how you can make everyone in the family happy. • Firstly, establish why your child needs a phone. Are they starting secondary school and need a phone to help stay in touch? Or do they want one just because their friends do? Weigh up the pros & cons and see if this is the right time to buy them a phone • Should I tie into a contract? Definitely not! Although a contract might be attractive to your child as they want the newest handset, being tied down and having to pay for the phone and airtime package can add up. To save money, try a sim-only contract that doesn't tie you down to a yearly contract. • SIM Only is the cheapest option and it’s contract free. Lebara has great deals from £5 a month. Its new referral scheme also allows you to earn up to £50 when you refer a friend and gives those referred 25% off their plan for the first three months. • A lot of parents are concerned about how much data their kids will be using on social media, but a lot of handsets can now limit this usage so do keep this in mind when buying their first phone. • Lastly, does their first phone need to be the best on the market? Not at all! You can get good deals on handsets that do all you need from around £100 – keep an eye out for deals.

Nip Confidence Wobbles In The Bud by LEE LAM, Your Startup Partner (the-usp.co.uk)

“They’re so confident!” When someone is confident – assured, certain of their path – there is a tendency to think of it as a personality trait – you’ve either got it or you haven’t. But confidence acts more like an emotion – it flows in and out of your personality. It can change in an instant – think of times when you were unsure of how you looked and someone complimented you – it’s such a boost! But then there are times where you feel great, but others disagree – and you want the ground to swallow you up. Ironically, these two things can happen on exactly the same day, wearing exactly the same thing! There’s no such thing as a confident person. Usually, the people who you think of as confident just have a better ability to regain that feeling more quickly. Everyone has wobbles. Sometimes they are external criticism of a decision, a comment on your actions. More often it is an internal wobble – a jolt in your self belief that makes you doubt yourself. The challenge is that the longer it is allowed to control your thoughts and actions, the harder it is to remember that it is only a temporary feeling.

So, if you are having one of those wobbles – what can you do to overcome it? Confidence is based on two things – the sense of control you have over your environment and your beliefs.

Do you feel in charge of your life and if you do, what do you believe you are capable of?

Controlling your environment can feel tough and you definitely lose confidence when you feel that you are having to react to everything. There are three parts to your environment: those things that you have complete control of (your thoughts, your body), those that you can influence (your home, your friends, your family) and those that you have no control over (the weather, global events). With the things that you cannot control at all, you prepare – what would you do if these things happened (mostly, this becomes take an umbrella).

Where you have complete control, remind yourself that you can choose minute by minute what to do.

The most effort needs to be put into those things you can

lifeinmagazines.co.uk

influence, because here you have a real choice of how to act and react. Rather than worrying, focus on what you want to happen – then look at how you could make that so. Do you need to convince someone to change their mind? Do you need to strike a power pose to give you a boost before that important meeting? Do you need to focus on the bigger goal you want to achieve, rather than focusing on the failures you have getting there?

Confident doesn’t mean that everything goes your way – it means you believe that you can control, influence or cope with whatever life throws at you.

What you believe is the most important piece of true confidence. You may feel like you know who you are, but so much of that is set by others. You know they will judge your actions, so you try to fit in, to be accepted. But that can feel like wearing an ill-fitting suit –You can’t concentrate on anything other than how uncomfortable you are. People who feel confident have a great sense of who they are, rather than who others want them to be. Their beliefs are driven by self-awareness and a belief that they have intrinsic value and worth. You are worth so much more than you think – how much different would your life be if you really understood that?

Can you change what you believe? Yes, but it is a process.

First you have to recognise the belief that you have. Then ask, where did I get this from? Is it something I think about myself, or is it something that other people have said about me? Once you know this answer, you ask the final question – is that who I want to be? You get to choose the answer and it can be your first step towards strengthening your confidence and getting back on track. These questions can become a daily practice if needed – they are simple to remember and quick to use – they deal with any wobbles that may come your way.

It is unlikely you will ever will the weather to get better, but for everything else in your world, you have far more control – if you just grab it. October 2021 Life in... Orpington 35
