This month we’ve got some fab features we’re sure you’ll enjoy – from healthier takeaway options and odd sock hacks, to how to open yourself up to new experiences and organising the big autumn clean.

The last month has been particularly memorable for me. First of all, I travelled to Coventry to give a presentation entitled ‘Big Tools For Small Businesses’ at a publisher’s conference. It was great to meet fellow editors, get some great tips and enjoy a sense of contributing to the wider community.

The second event was the London Shine Walk, where both myself, Nicky and Lynsey (see The Team - right) chose to walk to raise money for the Chartwell Cancer Trust. It’s a charity that has not only helped me in the past, but many of our friends too – and continues to support people, including children, in the borough who have been diagnosed with cancer. Nicky and I took on the 10k walk, while Lynsey completed the half marathon! And we’re delighted to announce that we’ve helped to raise just over £1,000.

Chandra Sharma of Orpington’s Tangent Office Resources recently held his annual Macmilla n Coffee Morning. The event gets bigger and better every year with a ‘spin the wheel’ to win prizes donated by local business es and individuals, a human fruit machine courtesy of Chislehu rst Rotary and of course refreshments and a great selection of cakes to tuck into. Zora Hosen

Zaynab and Zora

Zaynab Bheekhun nominated her 12-year-old daughter, Zora, for the charitable work she has done in her local community and for launching The Little Kindness Programme and Foundation.

Zaynab said: “Zora’s selfless approach towards others is amazing. Zora was bullied for three years – physically and mentally; despite this, she used her passion for art and reading to help motivate others. When Zora won a Jack Petchey Achievement Award, which recognises outstanding young people aged 11-25 across London, it was amazing - she amazes me every day.”

Zora, can you tell us more about The Little Kindness Programme – who it’s aimed at and what it entails?

I created the programme to allow young people who have been through a tough time to develop confidence and build their self-esteem. It’s important that everyone’s voice is heard and the programme gives them the opportunity to express themselves in what they want to do – now and in the future.

What inspired you to create The Little Kindness Programme and what do you hope it will achieve?

After three years of being severely bullied, my mum gave me the opportunity to create and make things which really helped me focus on a purpose. I thought it would be nice to extend this to others in my school who had been through hardship. I developed the Little Kindness Foundation in January 2019, which from this, I launched the Little Kindness Programme in September 2021 – a charity for communities, where I donate books to school libraries. The Little Kindness Programme focusses on children's mental health and the use of art as a healing tool, which has greatly helped me.

What do you aspire to do when you grow up?

I want to be an architect and design buildings. I want to create sustainable buildings that don’t contribute to destroying the planet.

How can people find out more about the Little Kindness Foundation – and will you be rolling this out to all children in the borough in the future do you think?

I am trying to get hold of different community leaders to be part of the judging panel for the Little Kindness Programme and hopefully roll it out across different boroughs.

How do you find time to fit everything in – and who or what inspires you?

I get my school work done as soon as I can so I have time to do the things I love doing – blogging, writing poetry and creating things. My mum inspires me the most – she inspired me to create things and I found a new passion.

Your mum tells us that you’re also a philanthropist. Can you tell us more about this – and from a community or local perspective, who you’ve helped?

With the money that I get from doing my chores I buy books and then donate them to school libraries that need help. There was this one school who had thousands of their

MAYOR’S VOICE Ballet Production of Swan Lake

The Ballet Production at the Churchill Theatre was both exhilarating and highly enjoyable. The corps de ballet, particularly the dance of the cygnets, was quite outstanding from very young aspiring ballerinas. The audience were massively appreciative in their praise of the performance and the superb testimony for the young people who have trained so hard, a wonderful opportunity to display the skill, which they have acquired through their intensive training and revealing their aspirations for greater success.

Trust Payments

I was recently invited to attend the opening ceremony for the Trust Payments office in Bromley, which was chosen as a HQ to afford easy access to London and particularly the financial centre of the city. Ehe event was considered of major importance in that the chair and members of the board arrived from Georgia early in the day to attend the ceremony. We wish the company every success in their venture and are delighted that they chose Bromley.

Evolve Housing & Technology Exhibition

I attended the Evolve Housing Open Day in Plaistow Lane and was greatly impressed with the introduction that I and the Lady Mayoress received. It enabled us to understand the complex problems with which the Housing Association cope with in re-establishing young homeless people into society. The care, which is freely available to them is very thorough, which has succeeded in restoring many of the displaced young people into positive

contributors to our society generally.

An exhibition arranged at the Methodist Church in Orpington was also astounding, whereby a range of companies were all offering various products for those who are hard of hearing. In addition to the hearing aids, there was a good opportunity to be taught lip reading.

Battle of Britain Service

A service in commemoration of the Battle of Britain was held at the Chapel on 19th September which was very well attended with a very high involvement of the British Legion and the Air Cadet Unit. The significance of the sacrifices made by those members of the Royal Air Force who died during the Battle is commemorated in the excellent museum. It is a wonderful tribute to those members of the Royal Air Force who failed to return from battle.

Meanwhile, Pengefest’s Fundraiser for St Christopher’s Hospice based in Penge was extremely successful. It offered a variety of craft beers, innovative stalls and a wonderful Jazz Band to entertain residents. An excellent tribute to those residents who work so hard to establish this event, also at the same time to enable the residents to have a wider appreciation of our town twinning arrangements with Neuwied, Germany.

A third of UK households have become greener since the first lockdown by turning lights off, recycling more carefully and showering instead of bathing.

The study of 2,000 adults by Princes Fish also found that 31% now only fill the kettle with as much water as they actually need, 27% of us turn electricals off at the socket and 22% wash clothes at low temperatures. It also emerged that these efforts are not just benefiting the planet as 23% said their household is now closer due to working together to be greener. Other efforts at becoming greener have included batch cooking, upcycling old household items and cycling or walking instead of driving. Keep up the great work!

HEALTHIER TAKEAWAY OPTIONS

As we all know, regularly consuming takeaways can have a negative impact on heart health as well as the waistline. Swapping your usual takeaway for a healthier option may be a good way to cut down on fat, salt and sugar. Helen Flaherty, Head of Health Promotion at Heart Research UK, has some great tips for doing just that…

The prep work Compare the menus for takeaway food outlets and try to choose one that provides some healthier options. Some takeaway food outlets list calories on their menus and this can help you to make a healthier choice.

Choose wisely Try to avoid foods that are deep fried, such as fish in batter, chips and fried chicken. Swap large deep-pan pizzas and pizzas with stuffed crusts for smaller pizzas. Select lower fat pizza toppings, such as mushrooms, peppers, sweetcorn, chicken and ham, rather than pepperoni or extra cheese which are both high in fat.

Watch the portions Be careful not to buy too much food when ordering your takeaway. Instead of ordering starters, mains, sides and desserts, why not just have a main course and finish

off with some fruit and yoghurt? You could share a dish or freeze a portion of your takeaway for another time to avoid eating too much.

Try a ‘fakeaway’ Try making healthier versions of your favourite takeaway dishes at home by finding healthy recipes online. If you can’t live without your favourite takeaway dish, you could try swapping side dishes, such as chips, garlic bread, fried rice or naan bread for brown rice or wholemeal pitta bread that you prepare at home.

Drink up Rather than buying sugary drinks with your takeaway, try drinking tap water or low calorie drinks instead. If you usually have alcoholic drinks with your takeaway, try to reduce the amount you consume by having a glass of water in between each alcoholic drink and try to choose drinks that have a lower alcohol content. Not only will this reduce your calorie intake, but it may also reduce the cost.

Cheese straws Makes 20 Prep time 30 minutes,plus 30 minutes chilling.

Cooking time 15 minutes Ingredients: • 100g salted Homepride spread • 100g cheddar, grated • 200g plain flour • 1 tsp baking powder • 1/4tsp cayenne pepper • 1 large egg separated • 3 slices parma ham • 2 tbsp parmesan, finely grated Method: 1. In a large bowl beat the spread. Then beat in the cheese and add the flour, baking powder and cayenne pepper and mix. Add the egg yolk and 1 tbsp cold water and mix together to form a smooth dough, adding a little extra water if needed. Shape into a flat disc, wrap in cling film and chill in the fridge for 30 minutes.

2. Preheat the oven to 190°C/fan 170°C/gas 5. Divide the dough into 2, then roll each piece into a rectangle 15cm x 30cm. Brush one with a little beaten egg white and place the parma ham slices on top in a single even layer. Brush again with egg white and place the second rectangle on top, roll lightly to seal.

3. Cut into 20 x 15cm strips, twisting each strip a few times before placing on a baking sheet lined with baking parchment. Brush the strips with egg white, sprinkle over the parmesan and then bake in the oven for 15 minutes or until golden.

4. Leave to cool for a few minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.

New research by Yes Homebuyers has revealed the biggest homebuyer turn-offs and how much they can wipe from the value of your property.

- New power lines, mobile phone towers, or wind turbines can see an average of -13%, or

Q: A HUGE congratulations Josette! You must be thrilled?

A: I think I’m still in shock! I got my application in with just two minutes to spare on the clock and I can’t believe that I’ve been acknowledged as one of 100. It all feels a bit surreal.

Q: Amazing! So what exactly does your business offer?

A: My Party Box.fun provides party boxes for children’s parties to help busy parents. Being eco-friendly and sustainable is very important to me, so around 85% of the

items that are currently included in the party boxes are either recyclable, reusable or biodegradable. My goal is to get to 100%!

Q: When did you launch and what inspired you to start your business?

Raising two girls, my inspiration came from a bit of a pain point, whereby I wanted my children to experience memorable birthdays, but without the hassle of having to organise everything – from the decorations down to the party bags. So instead I came up with the solution of offering everything in a hamper basket to host a memorable party – all that needs adding are the guests, catering and entertainment.

I work locally as a Celebrant, in and around Orpington. Having been an Orpington resident for most of my life, I feel it is important to work closely with the community that I live in, and as a result of that, I have also co-founded The Bereavement Café in Orpington.

So, my role as a Celebrant is to work with families who have lost a loved one and help them create a unique and fitting ceremony, to help them say goodbye.

But I have also introduced something called, “Remember Me” and that is to help people document their wishes before they die. This is a really simple way of instructing your loved ones with what you want, when that time comes. We can discuss everything from music choices, your life story, colours, themes, and have it all recorded safely, so that when the time comes your family members aren’t left scratching their heads trying to work out what you would have wanted.

How to open yourself up to new experiences

This summer, I drove a jet ski with my 11-year-old son on the back. Now, did I want to go on that Jet Ski? No. Was I scared to drive that Jet Ski? Certainly! Did I also provide myself with countless reasons as to how it could go wrong? You better believe I did. But thankfully, I managed to let the part of me open to it overrule the part of me that wanted to run (not jet ski) away. In truth, it ended up being a brilliant experience. My son and I loved every minute of it, and I'm so pleased I gave it a go.

There are lots of benefits to opening yourself up to new experiences. The more we try, the more we develop. We can gain new skills, interests and even friends. Research has shown that trying new things can support brain health by boosting our cognitive function, improving our concentration, memory and problem-solving abilities. Plus, repeatedly being open sees reluctance take a backseat as our sense of adventure begins to grow.

Yes, new experiences can work out the other way, too that's a fact of life. But even in the experiences that don't go so well, you at least have the opportunity to come to know yourself a little better. And this knowledge is just as priceless.

To help yourself become more open, here are some simple yet effective techniques you can use:

1. Challenge your 'no'

It's perfectly acceptable to say no. Especially if something puts you at risk mentally or physically, if it's something you're going to resent doing highly, or you just don't have the capacity for. However, if these aren't the reasons, challenge why you're saying no. For each self-imposed barrier you create, question the validity.

2. Be optimistic

We're naturally programmed to lean towards the negative, but what if we lean into the positive instead? Why not expect the experience to go well? Spend a moment listing all the potential positive outcomes. Visualise it going well and allow optimism to counter-balance any nerves.

3. Be kind to yourself

It's natural to be nervous. But, rather than criticise yourself for it - or let your inner critic monologue uncensored about how you're not capable - show yourself some kindness.

Think of how you would speak to a friend who was apprehensive but wanting to give something a try. Extend that compassion to yourself.

4. Worry less about the judgement of others It's a hard fact (but a fact nonetheless) that you'll never be able to control what others think of you. So rather than suppress yourself, you might as well live as you want and try what you want to try.

5. 'I'll handle it' This mantra has helped me through so much. Advocated by author Susan Jeffers in her best-selling book, Feel the Fear & Do It Anyway, these three simple words join to make such a powerful statement. Saying, 'I'll handle it' empowers you to develop more trust and underlying confidence in your ability to handle whatever comes your way. I certainly repeated this statement a fair few times before I sat on that Jet Ski! Ultimately, if the idea of a new experience feels right for you - even if it is scary - take a deep breath and give it a go. You never know where it will lead or how much happier it might make you.
