Great Houses of the District - part 4 Regular readers of Life In Orpington will know that we have embarked on a series of articles focused on some of the great houses in our district.

This month we look at a couple of houses towards the district’s very south-west boundary. High Elms House in the parish of Farnborough and Down House in the Village of Downe. Writing one page, with images, on these two places and their owners, is very tricky when it would be easier to write a short book! If what we show here interests you, you can search for more information online.

As we always say, you need to visualise the area, a 100-150 (or so) years ago, as being very rural and locked deep in the West Kent countryside. Travelling between places was considerably basic and limited even with the coming of the railway. Farnborough and especially Downe were quite remote.

High Elms Estate and House From the early 19th Century, High Elms House and Estate belonged to the Lubbock family. In 1865 ownership passed to Sir John William Lubbock (4th Baronet and 1st Lord Avebury). His prestigious philanthropic, scientific, political careers and friendship with Darwin made him and High Elms famous. We have him to thank for the Bank Holiday Act 1871! The Lubbock’s sold the house in 1938 which burned to the ground in 1967. Today the estate is a poplar recreation and education centre which you can visit. You can also visit the ‘Lubbock Collection’ at Bromley Central Library.

Charles Darwin 12 Feb 1809 19 Apr 1882

There are some interesting buildings on the estate that did not burn down in 1967 and the one we show is one of the original 19th century buildings of the original High Elms Estate. This is the farmhouse of what is now called ‘Clock House Farm’. In 1826 the clock and bell were constructed to give a visible and audible call to the workers to mark the start/end of the working day and mealtimes.

Downe High Street and Down House This view c1950 has remained virtually unchanged for over a hundred years. The renowned Charles Darwin moved to Down House in 1842 and worked there on his theories of evolution by natural selection.

Darwin was great friends with Sir John Lubbock and they shared their work on natural studies. Although Darwin’s Down House is a popular tourist attraction, Downe remains a pretty picturesque village with an old oak tree, pubs and village shops.

Earlier this year I had great trouble with my iPad, when the talktalk system failed (perhaps it felt that the Prime Minister's lockdown should include the Internet). But my iPad was really upset and turned its nose up at me!

From your magazine I found Rez at the Computer Store near the Priory end of the High Street. He sorted everything out for me - twice!! The first time he restored my iPad out of its sulk; the second time, as I had changed supplier, he set it up perfectly to do exactly what I wanted it to do. Thank you so much, Rez!

POETRY CORNER I may not be a Kentish man, I may not be a man of Kent, but how I like the trips to towns and villages across the breadth of this county, the maps tell us is Kent. Oh how I love to visit places I see in local guides and magazines; places such as Appledore, Sevenoaks, Chilham, Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells, all places deep in Kent, places once heard about but very rarely seen. Biggin Hill, a former fighter base that history has bestowed, still an airfield, the RAF long departed; the Battle of Britain at its height, from this airfield, pilots flew and fought, each and every one, lion-hearted.

To the Medway towns you must go, to see our maritime past, to Chatham, folks, to see the docks that once were busy and sailor numbers vast. To Ashford, to the railway station, and Eurostar, taking passengers to France. But me, I'd rather stay right here and visit Kent both near and far, to lean against a well-worn bar in some scenic pub and down a Kentish cider in a jar. To Rochester and its lovely shops, the cathedral nearby, or to the castle I might go; yes more history than I know, but I'll surely try, because it's part of Kent you see, and to miss its beauty, I'd almost want to cry.

From Aylesford to the Weald, from Romney, Hythe and Dymchurch, and villages between; from the River Stour and Canterbury, Biddenden to Bromley, from West Wickham to far-flung towns and fields and bridges, on country roads I have never been, nor crossing little country streams, or avoiding motorways and lengthy traffic jams. To the coast I go, to Margate for a fun day out, to Broadstairs or to Herne Bay; to Sandwich, a pretty part of Kent, before I head back on my way and maybe next time Dover, Deal or Whitstable, and perhaps with luck, a longer stay...

MAYOR’S VOICE… As I’ve mentioned previously in one of my columns, one of my priorities as Mayor of Bromley is to update the communication streams coming from the Mayoralty and to embrace both traditional and new methods. As such, I’m keen to reach out to the public in as many ways as possible – from Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, to YouTube and the Website. Even something as simple as having clickable hyperlinks in our email signatures to highlight my chosen charities this year can make a difference. The devil’s in the detail as they say.

Whilst I’m on the subject of technology and modernisation, you’ll be pleased to hear that the first quarterly newsletter has now gone out. It covers news, events and engagements. If you see people wearing the pin badges or the toggles, please do acknowledge them with a thank you or a thumbs up, as they have helped us and the wider community in some way.

I was also impressed and excited to see the amazing work done by The Shaw Trust, Scadbury Park, Chislehurst.

Shaw Trust has become specialists in overcoming obstacles faced by people with learning and physical difficulties and use a gardening environment to stimulate and give satisfaction and self-worth to the participants. They need volunteers to assist in both gardening and carpentry, so please email mayors.office@bromley.gov.uk if you would like to help.

Other appointments have included unveiling a new information board in Downe; attending a Zoom meeting with Beckenham Rotary Club; launching Linkin Bromley – a new website for children in care to use for information and fun (see linkinbromley.co.uk); visiting Bromley Ambulance Station, where I learned so much and met the wonderful people saving lives every day. I also attended Beckenham Business Association virtually and unveiled the winner of the Dementia-friendly award at the virtual Orpies - the winner being the Walnuts Centre.

Finally, we’ve launched the Spitfire draw, giving members of the public the chance to win a flight in a Spitfire. I decided not to do it as an auction, but rather a raffle so that it’s affordable to everyone to enter – and for everyone to have an equal opportunity of winning. Remember you’ll also be helping raise money for my two chosen charities this year – The Chartwell Cancer Trust and Cystic Fibrosis Supporters.

Steve Catchpole

Matthew Yule nominated Steve Catchpole (aka DJ Teabags) as this month’s local hero.

Matthew said: “Steve very kindly set up and produced ten weekly radio podcasts for our members at Bromley Mencap.

How does it feel to be nominated by Matt?

I didn’t do this for any recognition, it was an extension of what I've enjoyed doing for many, many years. Obviously I'm humbled, and in truth Matt deserves much of any credit being handed out! He supported the project, rallied the interest and made this happen – and he's now looking to see if we work on another ‘radio’ type project as well.

How did you get involved in radio?

As a young teenager from Lewisham south London I wandered into a hospital radio station one school night back in 1973 and was immediately hooked on the world of music and radio. I'm still hooked, I have a radio nickname of ‘Teabags’ (it's a long story!) and I am now retired in Maidstone, where I transferred to the local hospital radio service in 1993 and have been chairman for 20 years or so now, still presenting weekly radio programs. It's a hobby that has allowed me to expand my skills, provided some amazing opportunities over the last 50 years and has kept me sane during my time as an accountant and finance director.

How did you come to help out with Bromley Mencap?

My sister provided some workshops for Mencap and invited me along to provide a disco for them probably some 20 plus years ago now and this has continued ever since.

Lockdown put paid to any discos this year and a chance conversation with Matt Yule, who works with Bromley Mencap, sparked an idea between us. He discovered my interest in radio and I suggested we could try and put together a request programme for the staff and members so they could keep in touch – we knew from the discos everyone loved the music and a chance to dance. He would

circulate and ask for requests and I would put something together. We thought it would be just the one request show podcast of an hour or so – but it took off with requests arriving each week and soon it included sound clips of jokes, recordings of staff keeping everyone positive (and some even singing!), and soon there were several running gags. Requests were forwarded to me each Friday and with some eight-ten hours editing, a new hour podcast would be placed into a dropbox on the Sunday evening for everyone to access. This continued for ten weeks and Matt then asked me to provide a ‘Virtual Disco’. Always up for a challenge, of course I said yes with no idea how I would achieve it. We announced in the podcasts we had a special ‘secret project’ and asked for some photos and short video clips. I tried out some software and was able to put everything together with videos of their favourite dance numbers. The big reveal was an invite to a Zoom meeting and finally everyone had a chance to see each other, wave to old friends and then the video disco began! Matt and I were amazed to see families dancing and laughing on screen – it was an evening to remember.

Why was it important for you to get involved in Bromley Mencap?

I enjoy playing music on the radio. I've been asked back year-on-year to provide a disco and it's nice to know everyone is there to sing and dance so it makes the DJ job easy. I've grown to know some of the youngsters and they look forward to the evenings – even queuing outside a couple of hours beforehand. Some have a hard time and have been dealt difficult hands in life, why not help someone smile when you can?

I was always raised to be respectful of others and to help where you can. My hobby with radio brings me into contact with all sorts of groups struggling to raise funds and support others in need. Community and helping others is important – if we were all just a little more thoughtful and helpful to others, life would be good all round. I enjoy what I do and really it's nothing compared to the dedication of people like Matt and those at Mencap who really deserve awards every working day for the help and support they give to the people and families not so blessed as me!

1. Prepare. Really think about the direction for your business

Healthy heart tips

A healthy, well-balanced diet is important for managing your weight and preventing serious health problems, including heart disease. The Eatwell Guide is a visual tool that represents government guidelines on healthy eating. This is represented as a plate, which is divided into five food groups. Try to consume a variety of foods from each of the food groups to ensure you consume a range of nutrients.

Fruit and vegetables

Fruit and vegetables should make up over a third of the foods in your diet as they are a good source of vitamins, minerals and fibre. However, most people do not eat enough. Fresh, frozen, tinned, dried or juiced fruit and vegetables all count.

Potato, bread, rice, pasta and other starchy carbohydrates

These provide us with energy and essential nutrients and should make up just over a third of your diet. Choose wholegrain versions, such as wholemeal pasta, brown rice, wholemeal bread and wholegrain breakfast cereals. You can also try to leave the skin on potatoes for extra fibre.

Beans, pulses, fish, eggs, meat and other proteins

Try to include any of these with most meals as they’re a good source of protein, vitamins and minerals. Try to choose a lean cut of meat, such as chicken without the skin, as it is lower in saturated fat.

A closer look at... Cheese boards Getting a cheese board right needn’t be a hassle – you just need to know what to offer and understand a little about pairings. Luckily, Laura’s Larder - a specialist food store and delicatessen in Petts Wood – has the answers...

Cote Hill Blue is soft blue cheese with a blooming rind, made in Lincolnshire. It tastes great when you pair it with berries – fresh blackberries would be wonderful, or a simple fruity chutney. It’s priced at £2.80 for 100g.

A well thought out cheese board should have a selection of cheeses (aim for between three and five), featuring a mix of strengths, textures, tastes, shapes and colours. Here we are looking at British cheese.

Spenwood is a British sheep’s milk hard cheese and offers a nutty flavour – similar to Pecorino or Manchego. Pair with quince, or almond is always a good idea. Find it for £3 per 100g.

Soft cheese options could include a Suffolk Brie or a Kentish Camembert, while you can’t go wrong with a cheddar for the hard cheese - or Lincolnshire Poacher or Cornish Yarg.

When looking at a blue cheese, Stilton is a popular choice, or try the modern, creamier, Beauvale. Flavoured cheeses have become increasingly popular and range from smoke and spices to fruit and truffles!

My name is Michelle, and I am passionate about what I do.

I work locally as a Celebrant, in and around Orpington. Having been an Orpington resident for most of my life, I feel it is important to work closely with the community that I live in, and as a result of that, I have also co-founded The Bereavement Café in Orpington.

So, my role as a Celebrant is to work with families who have lost a loved one and help them create a unique and fitting ceremony, to help them say goodbye.

But I have also introduced something called, “Remember Me” and that is to help people document their wishes before they die. This is a really simple way of instructing your loved ones with what you want, when that time comes. We can discuss everything from music choices, your life story, colours, themes, and have it all recorded safely, so that when the time comes your family members aren’t left scratching their heads trying to work out what you would have wanted.

Get 48 days off work in 2021!

Looking for extra holiday time next year? If your usual working days are Monday-Friday, try this simple life hack that will give you 48 days off using only 18 days of annual leave…

• With both Christmas Day (2020) and New Year's Day

(2021) falling on a Friday, this is your chance to bridge the gap to create a solid break of ten days by booking the days between them off. Book off December 29, 30, 31 - for a ten-day break.

• For another ten-day break, book off the days in between Good Friday and Easter Monday - April 6, 7, 8, 9 • Enjoy nine days off by booking four days of holiday

after this year's May Day, (Monday May 3). Book off May 4, 5, 6, 7.

• Enjoy a nine-day break by using just four days of holiday allowance this summer following the August bank holiday on August 30. Book off August 31, September 1, 2, 3.

• At Christmas next year you can enjoy a ten-day break by booking off just three days of annual leave.

Cut water bills the savvy way

Thames Water is making it mandatory for everyone to switch to a metered unit, so get water savvy by adopting some of the habits below to save you money down the line...

1. Every time you run the dishwasher or washing machine, aim to put on a full load. If you haven't got a full load look for an economy or eco cycle which uses less water and energy.

2. Waiting for tap water to run cold (to water plants for example) can waste as much as ten litres of water a day, so keep a couple of bottles of water in the fridge for tasks like this.

3. Use a water butt in your garden. The rain water it collects can be used to water plants.

4. If you're upgrading your bathroom most new appliances are eco-friendlier. For example, dual flush toilets use much less water than the old-style flush systems.

5. Consider using flow limiters on taps or aerated showers.

BEAT THE STAINS! RED WINE: Soak up excess with a

paper towel then liberally sprinkle salt on the stain. Leave for 5 minutes then sponge with soapy water & blot dry.

CANDLE WAX: Put ice cubes on top to harden the wax then scrape off with a blunt knife. Use methylated spirit to clean what’s left.

PLANT POLLEN: Use sticky tape to lift the pollen up (don’t rub in!). You can also try using your vac.

MUDDY PRINTS: Leave to dry then

pumpkins - not just for decoration What are you planning on doing with your leftover halloween pumpkin? They can be great fun to carve but they shouldn't just be used for decoration; this delicious fruit should also make it to your dinner plate. It is said that only half of all pumpkins carved in the UK are actually eaten and many people don't realise that pumpkins carving can actually be eaten. So why not try to use every part of your pumpkin this year and help reduce seasonal food waste.

The health benefits of pumpkins

This time of year pumpkins can be purchased local and fresh. They are nutrient dense, fibrous and low in processed sugar and carbohydrates. They are also low on the Glycemic index which means they will not unnecessarily spike your blood sugar. Pumpkins are rich in Vitamin A and are a great source of potassium.

How to cook pumpkins

Pumpkin pieces can be cooked in a variety of ways boiled, steamed, roasted or microwaved. They can be mixed into dishes, eaten solo or served as a nutritious side. Here are just a few ideas of how you can enjoy your pumpkin this year.

To bake just place cut side down on a baking dish in the oven at 180°C for 30 minutes or longer. Test it's done by piercing with a fork - when tender, you can remove from the oven. Remember to allow cooling before handling. If your pumpkin pieces are unpeeled, spoon out the soft flesh and proceed with any recipe that asks for cooked mashed pumpkin.

If you'd rather microwave your pumpkin pieces, place

cut side down and microwave on high for 15 minutes or until tender. The pieces can be served as a side dish with meals.

Pumpkin soup

Pumpkin soup is an easy dish and a great comfort food.

Just cook some vegetable or chicken stock, 1kg of pumpkin, onion, garlic, and a potato or two and simmer for 20 minutes. Add coconut milk or double cream (150ml) at the end, bring back to the boil and then puree in blender before serving. Delicious!

What about the seeds?

Pumpkin seeds are high in vitamin E, iron, magnesium, potassium, zinc, and are an excellent plant-based source of omega-6 and omega-3 essential fatty acids.

For a healthy snack, roast the seeds in the oven for a few minutes with a bit of olive oil and salt. Or for a bit of spice, try toasting the seeds in a pan with some oil, paprika and garlic powder. Toasted pumpkin seeds can also be blended and added to a dip.

No time to cook

If you don’t have time to cook with your pumpkin scrapings straight-away, you can always put them in a reusable container and store in the freezer until you’re ready to make a casserole or stew.

Pumpkins should not be put in the general household bin as this will increase emissions from greenhouse gases if sent to landfill. If you can't eat your pumpkins then either compost them, put them out for the birds or dispose of them in your food waste collection. You could try burying the pumpkin guts in a hole in your garden - you never know, next year, you may be rewarded with your very own pumpkin patch!

Q: What questions should I be asking when choosing a nursery for my child?

A: Guilt, anxiety and being completely overwhelmed, whilst trying

to place your child into a new childcare setting, are common

feelings. As a parent who worked in the city when my children

were babies/toddlers, I’ve been in those shoes. The first thing

to notice is how the children who are there already, are

interacting with the adults and how confident and happy they

appear. Are they looking happy and relaxed? Are the adults

enjoying themselves too with the children? This will tell you a

lot, most of what is important. If you feel like you could walk

out there and then and leave your child, confidently then that’s

a good indicator. If you feel like everything hasn’t been covered

during the tour, I’d ask the following questions, often these

questions arise once a parent has left and they are digesting

everything. So always call or email the setting and ask for

further clarification. Other questions could be what’s a typical

day like? Do you leave the setting with the children? Do you

have a curriculum or do you follow the child’s interests? What

will my child be eating? How many children are there usually?

Ladies, golf is calling!

How many of you play golf? I’m sure that there are a lot of "yes’s" and I'm more than certain it's 99% men! Ladies, what are you doing?! There is a sport out there that is enjoyable, relieves stress, and is also a mega calorie burner. You are easily looking at nearly 1,400 calories if you walk 18 holes and carry your bag!

Hi I'm Chloe, and about 4 years ago I took up golf.

Originally from Australia, I have always been interested in keeping fit and playing a sport, and, out of nowhere, I came across golf while flicking through channels on the telly. I saw these girls on the course smashing a ball 200 to 300 yards and looking so powerful and stylish whilst doing it and I wanted to try my hand at it. So I started Googling and found out where the local range was. I saw that they offered beginner classes for women who have no idea about golf and own no golf clothes. I thought it looked perfect for me, so I attended my first lesson and since then I’ve been hooked! You now find me on the course every weekend in the summer and occasionally in winter too.

I live in Orpington and I feel so lucky to be surrounded by so many women-friendly golf courses. Let's start with my favourite beginner course, Chelsfield Lakes. I highly recommend this golf club as they have a 9-hole par 3 course which is perfect for any beginner golfer.

Not only is it quick to play with all holes less than 200 yards, it full of first time golfers just like you, so no one

bats an eyelid if you hit a ball 10 yards in front of you or swing and miss it completely (I’ve had my fair share of this!). Chelsfield Lakes also has a fantastic 18-hole course once you feel like you can tackle it!

If now you’re thinking that it sounds like fun and that you might give it a go, but you’re wondering what to wear, well it’s not as strict as you think. Most courses now have a relaxed dress code, but it's still best to check on their website. I always tend to wear a polo with a collar and a tennis skirt in the summer. Come winter it’s leggings, jumper and a beanie, but bear in mind that you do warm up a few holes in. Also don’t forget a golf glove; you might not need it, but I find it stops the blisters from forming and I also feel pretty cool wearing a pink one. Once you have been out on the course and around the club, you’ll start to develop your own style.
