Getting Orpington to know

Local History Corner The River Cray was the life blood of the towns of St Mary Cray and Orpington. It also brought prosperity to other towns along its length. In Roman times it formed as a stream in what is Orpington High St and Sevenoaks Road being contributed to by a network of smaller streams and water sources from the higher grounds area. The river was far wider and deeper than today and a story tells of a pageant carrying Queen Elizabeth I up to Orpington from the River Thames.

Crayfish were found in abundance in the River Cray. It is often debated whether the Crayfish got its name from the River Cray. The meaning of the word Cray is also debated. Some say it is from the Saxon word ‘crecia’ meaning brook or rivulet or the Celtic word ‘crei’ meaning fresh or clean.

From the 1700s to the mid 1900s mills dominated the length of the river from Orpington to St Paul’s Cray (and beyond).

Here is a potted history of the most significant.

Nash’s Mill Nash’s Mill at St Paul’s Cray started as a corn mill but by the mid-1700s paper making had started. Nash was a big employer of the area and ran a successful business until the mid-1950s when the mill became a factory complex and by the mid-1980s had been demolished and replaced by light industrial units.

Joynsons Mill Joynsons Mill may be the most remembered in St Mary Cray as it lasted a very long time, was visible from miles around and employed many locals. It started off like most as a crop mill but became a paper mill by the late 1700s. William Joynson took it over in the early 1800s and was run successfully until 1967.

Orpington Mill The source of the River Cray is the ponds at the Priory. The first mill was Orpington, Colegate or Hodsolls Mill which stood near to Carlton Parade. An 18th Century mill stood at this site for nearly 200 years with its metal water wheel, grindstones and wooden frame and mill building. Orpington Mill also had a pond, supplied by the River Cray to maintain flow at the water wheel. The mill was demolished in the mid 1930s to make way for the housing in St Andrews Drive.

Did you know?

The mills of the River Cray were used in the production of flour, tanning leather and paper production.

Joynsons produced the first paper to be used in bank notes and also the first vegetable parchment paper.

"Shazam! is a sweet and funny story about a boy who is looking for his place in the world. He is given super powers by a wizard and with the help of his foster brother, he has to learn how to use them. Zachary Levi plays the part of Shazam brilliantly, he's believable as a 14 year old boy trapped in a super hero's body. My two children, aged 8 and 11 loved this heartwarming film which touches on the real meaning of family. Shazam! is a lot of fun, however it was quite christmassy so felt a little out of season watching it in April."

Community News - CHARITY WATCH Raising Awareness…. of prostate cancer Were you aware that prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men in the UK? In fact, one in eight men suffer from the condition, with someone in the UK dying from prostate cancer every 45 minutes.

To help raise awareness and funds for Prostate Cancer UK, which provides support and information for men worried about prostate cancer as well as funding vital research into the disease and campaigning for better services, a Charity Golf Day has been arranged on 2nd June at Chelsfield Lakes Golf Centre in Orpington.

In the UK, about one in eight men will get prostate cancer at some point in their lives.

Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men in the UK.

If you’re interested in playing golf and at the same time helping raise funds for this important charity, entries need to be received by 17th May at the latest.

Over 50 years old Prostate cancer mainly affects men over 50 and your risk increases with age.

The average age for men to be diagnosed with prostate cancer is between 70 and 74 years.

Family history and genetics You are two and a half times more likely to get prostate cancer if your father or brother has been diagnosed with it, compared with a man who has no affected relatives.

The fee per player is £50 and includes a snack and drink on arrival, 18-hole golf course, and a twocourse meal.

There are prizes to be won on the day, donated by local businesses, and a goodie bag will also be given out. Registration is at 9.30am and the first tee time is 11.04am. To book or for more information call Suren on 07449849588 or email suren63@icloud.com.

5 Minutes With...

Ann Hearn

Ann Hearn has been volunteering at St Christopher’s Hospice at Sydenham for about 18 years. She is a retired registered nurse and worked at King's College Hospital firstly in the intensive care and then on the district.

How did you become involved in working for St Christopher’s Hospice?

When I was working on the district I got to know the work the hospice does. It was then I thought I would like to volunteer there when I retired.

How many hours/days do you work a week?

I work / volunteer there every Thursday from 9am-2pm.

What does a typical day look like for you?

I work in the anniversary centre where a number of patients come in for the day. There will also be other patients coming for appointments which include seeing doctors, nurses, physiotherapists and complimentary therapists. Relatives who have people in the hospice can come down and sit there and try to relax for a while.

We offer food and drinks from 9am – 9pm. We are divided into teams and I am in the Wellbeing team.

My day consists of making sure everyone in the centre is being attended to. I may be looking after someone in a wheelchair, getting them a drink and making sure they can manage to drink it. Otherwise I

bereaved children support. Other services offered are social services helping people getting their benefits.

There is a complimentary therapist team. Besides patients in the hospice there is a community team; a large number of patients are looked after in their own homes.

might be taking them to appointments which includes going to the gym, acupuncture and to art therapy. They will have lunch at the centre and I will help anyone that requires feeding.

Some ladies enjoy having beauty treatments such as having their nails done. We have a hairdresser who offers her services to the In and Out Patients for a small fee. There is an art team which offers various activities from art, music and quilting.

The patients have worked with the Royal Academy of Arts and an orchestra.

How can the local community get involved in helping?

St Christopher’s depends on charitable funding. They get some money from the NHS but the greater amount has to be raised. There is a Fun Walk at Keston on Sunday May 19th. There is a variety of walks - short and longer ones - to fit the walker’s needs and it is always a fun day. Anyone interested in participating in the walk can contact St Christopher’s on 020 768 4500 and ask for the fund raising department or go online and register at www. stchristophers.org.uk St Christopher’s has a number of charity shops where people can donate clothes and bric-a-brac.

What’s the most rewarding thing about your job?

I really enjoy working there and it is a happy place. We work in the same team every week so get to know our fellow volunteers. There is a lot of laughter which surprises many people coming for the first time. I find it very rewarding.

Access for All Petts Wood and St Mary Cray stations are in line for a share of £300m boost to improve disabled access – a move welcomed by Jo Johnson MP. The new funding will provide Petts Wood and St Mary Cray stations with step-free access and will help thousands of disabled people across the Orpington constituency who use trains to get to work, to access vital services, to travel across the country and to visit friends and family.

What are you most looking forward to this year?

Seeing the amazing artwork from the children. Also, reading their wishes on the wish tree is so lovely, plus we’re very excited to see the recycled sea creatures that are being made for the festival by local primary school children. Told By An Idiot, the amazing theatre makers are holding free workshops for 18+ theatre makers who have not worked with them before in the lead up to the festival – see www.enchanted.com for details.

Enchanted Children’s Festival, a free festival held in Priory Gardens, Orpington on 1st June.

You held the first festival last year, what can we expect this year?

We have a giant sculpture of a turtle called Gusita our inspiration for this year’s environmental theme.

Jenny Boat Draws is back and will build a pirate ship from recycled materials with the children. We have performances from Litty Lightz, Croydon Steel Orchestra, Told By An Idiot and Brown Sugar, as well as drumming workshops, a graffiti wall, a sports area and much more! All of the activities are free and there’s no entrance fee.

Why did you start the festival?

After visiting interactive arts festivals with my children I wanted to offer the same for where I live. I have had incredible support from my friends and family, especially my sister, and we’ve been so lucky to be sponsored this year, which allows us to make the event free!

Clean beauty: what’s it all about?

by DEB HORGAN With our skin being our largest organ, more and more people are sitting up and taking notice of ‘clean beauty’.

But what do we mean by ‘clean beauty’? Clean refers to the fact that there are no known toxins in the product that have been linked to harmful health effects. Clean products disclose ALL ingredients – which include the fragrance components.

Did you know that even ‘organic’ products can contain toxins? They only need to contain a small percentage of organic ingredients to be labelled organic.

When looking at labels, look for those that are free of phlalates and parabens at least, and if one of the ingredients is ‘fragrance’, it should list what exactly is in the fragrance.

In my quest to seek out clean beauty products and reduce the toxic load on my body, I discovered Tropic a few years ago. The products are award-winning, fairly priced and super-accessible. They are also cruelty-free and veganfriendly. After using a small selection of the products at home, I was delighted with the results; my skin has never felt better. Always recycle or take your unwanted clothes to a local charity shop - you can even get vouchers from some retailers for bringing in bags of recyclable clothing that can’t be resold.

Buy new non-slip hangers (clip hangers for skirts & trousers) and put everything back, one thing on a hanger, by type of item (jackets - tops - dresses -

trousers - skirts), in colour order so you can really see if you have too much of one thing or any gaps!

Now your wardrobe should be full of clothes that fit, that you wear often and love wearing. Your next session could be to spend time experimenting being creative and putting new outfits together.

FAMILY GAME REVIEW: BALDERDASH Life in Orpington’s Editor, Lauretta, says: Balderdash has long been a favourite of mine and I introduced the concept to my kids when my youngest was 8. If you’ve ever seen the TV show ‘Call My Bluff’ it’s a bit like that. Players must con their opponents into believing their made-up definitions of words, people, initials, events and laws. You can score points and not even know the right answer – you’ve just got to think differently.

Top tip: As the game originated in the USA, if you use American words in your descriptions, you’ll fool your opponents into choosing your answer. i.e elevator instead of lift, candy instead of sweets etc.

What I love: It’s a great family game and without even realising it, it’ll help to improve your kids’ vocabulary and imagination. It’s a 10/10 for me.

What I didn’t love: I love every part of this game. After a while we couldn’t be bothered to move our counters around the board so we just tallied up our scores instead.

Try to go walking with friends once a week – pick a day and time and plan it into your schedule. If you prefer walking alone, then listen to your favourite music to inspire you or listen to a podcast – you can walk and learn at the same time!

Deloitte research has found that 12% of UK smartphone users (around 5.8 million people), said they would switch to a 5G network as soon as it becomes available later this year. In the UK, 5G smartphone shipments are predicted to total about 50,000 in 2019, and are expected to grow to between two and three million in 2020.

Paul Lee, head of research for technology, media and telecoms at Deloitte, said: “The adoption rate for 5G in the UK is likely to be slower than for 4G, largely as the UK may be amongst the first countries to see 5G launched across all operators.

Old fishing nets and rope can entangle marine life and kill them slowly. 135 different marine species have been reported to be affected by e ntanglement Large nets can carry on fishing forever and could kill all kinds of animals, from fish to whales, with no human to intervene and release them or haul them in.

Plastic doesn’t biodegrade and will just keep on breaking down into smaller and smaller pieces that could take thousands of years to degrade. These small pieces can be eaten by wild life and may enter the food chain. Recent studies prove that even plankton can eat tiny plastic fragments.

Plastics absorb harmful toxins in seawater that can accumulate up the food chain. Chemicals added to plastics during manufacturing to give them specific properties can also leach into the marine environment or organisms.

Animals and birds mistake plastics for food and eat it. Some species can’t regurgitate or pass it, so it stays in the animal’s stomach, and will eventually kill it.

Don’t choose obvious passwords (123456, qwerty, letmein and password) and avoid anything to do with personal information such as your birth date or pet’s name. If a password is just a word you can find in the dictionary – it’s not an ideal choice! Add numbers, upper cases and special characters. lifestyle 3 ways with lemons 1. Freshen up your dishes: when you've used up a lemon don't

throw away the wedges - pop one in the top rack of your dishwasher to leave your dishes smelling fresh when they've been cleaned.

2. Eliminate the odours:

If your fridge smells a bit iffy dab some lemon juice on a sponge and leave it in the fridge for a few hours.

3. Clean your microwave:

Cut a lemon in half and squeeze the juice into a cup half filed with water.

Put the lemon into the water and put the microwave on full power for three minutes. The steam generated will loosen any food stuck such you can then wipe and dry off with a clean cloth.

A Final Thought…

The perfect day out in Orpington

I am Louis, age 11, and I have lived in Orpington my whole life. This is my perfect day out in Orpington.

First stop would be a visit to Air Jump Trampoline Park.

You pay for an hour session of fun activities on the trampolines. I really enjoy visiting Air Jump, as I am sure many other children do.

Next stop for me would be the Odeon Cinema. But before I see a movie, I would take away a milkshake or ice cream from Creams, which is just opposite the cinema. Alternatively, you can visit easyCoffee, which is just a few shops down. I particularly enjoy their delicious hot chocolate and chocolate milkshakes.

After seeing my film, I would go for lunch in one of the many restaurants along the High Street. My favourites are Ephesus, Fiesta Mexicana, Pato Lounge, Nandos or Bella Italia to name just a few.

Thirdly would be a visit to The Walnuts Swimming Pool.

I particularly love the inflatable sessions, where there is a course to battle against, trying to not fall in the pool.

To make it even more challenging, the lifeguards spray you with freezing water from hoses from the edge! I can't possibly tell you how many times I have fallen in the pool because of the water being sprayed at me! It is great fun though.

Afterwards, I would go to The Walnuts Shopping Centre to look in CEX and The Works and a few other places before getting a drink in one of the many cafes nearby, including Primo and Costa Coffee.

To finish my fantastic day out, I would visit one of the restaurants that I previously listed. I really love burgers, and the best burger on the High Street is the Lounge Burger at Pato Lounge. Believe me, I have tried them all!

After the whole day's events, I would go home feeling wonderful that I had such an amazing day out in Orpington!
