CONTENTS We keep finding ourselves thinking how great technology has been this last year, helping us get through lockdown time and time again without too much upheaval. Platforms like Facebook and Instagram have kept us engaged socially, streaming services like Netflix have kept us entertained while video conference systems like Zoom have enabled us to continue with work (and school) from home.

Getting Orpington to know 1967 - 1st Petts Wood Guides
Young people’s organisations This month we look at local young people’s organisations in the district. Many are still going strong today, but as regular readers will know, our articles are based on a trip down memory lane.
Enjoy modern Turkish cuisine in a
spectacular setting
1933 Orpington May Queen
We asked our 4,000-plus Facebook enthusiasts for their memories and images. The Guide and Scout movement featured a lot, with references to the many Beavers, Cubs, Brownies, Scouts and Guide groups based in many church/village halls. Boys and Girls’ Brigades also featured alongside the mention of the various Armed Forces Cadet organisations, while the Knoll and Saxon Youth Groups also received a mention, as did the May Queens.
Did you know?
The Scout Organisation was formed in 1910.
Many organisations were based at local churches and ‘Church Parades’ were common with parades with musical accompaniment, especially with the Boys/Girls Brigades and military groups, where learning an instrument was part of the attraction. Even today young people’s organisations are very much part of the yearly remembrance services at the various war memorials.
1989 - 3rd St Mary Cray Brownies
Many groups featured in the Annual Orpington Town Carnival that sadly does not run anymore, and I would guess most of us would expect to see the May Queens parading on the back of some classic car or done up float. If you have access to the internet you may like to visit our Facebook page to see some of the memories and images posted by our members on this topic - @OrpHistOrg Here are some of the images posted...

Star response I live in Streatham and like to visit Orpington whenever I am in Bromley as it is only a bus ride away. I picked up Issue 27 / May 2021 edition of Life in …. Orpington from one of the shops when I was in Orpington and really enjoyed reading the magazine on my journey back into London Victoria. I prefer reading paper copies of magazines as I don’t like reading things online. I was wondering when the magazine comes out so that I don’t miss the next edition. I have just signed up to receive your newsletter!

NEW: What’s Your Take...?
www.graciouscare.co.uk
We ask for your views on topics that matter. This month’s question:
for a free care assessment
Should residents be penalised for not recycling?
The celebrity: Vicky Alcock We are living on this planet as if we have another one to go to. It is every individual's responsibility to re-use and recycle if they are able.
The retiree: Tricia Perry This could be a good idea but only if certain issues are dealt with first – things like should manufacturers be allowed to use so much unnecessary packaging? Should the councils be penalised for not actually doing the recycling once collected? And should waste collectors (subcontracted by councils) be penalised for leaving lots of litter around after their household collections? There’s no point in having laws if they’re not enforced!
Introducing 360° virtual viewings
Potential buyers will carry out a virtual viewing and be sent a detailed buyer’s report before any physical viewings take place.
The NHS Worker: Jacqui Moore Yes I think so, it's very easy to do if not in a flat. I have stacks more recycling than normal rubbish and if we all did, we would become much greener much quicker.
Book your FREE valuation today.
The part-time worker: Josie Batten Yes, all households should make an effort to recycle but not penalised if they don’t. Also, what about flats or shared households? It would be too difficult to monitor.
The small business owner: Bex Lang Recycling is an important issue, so I believe issuing fines to those who are unwilling to do so, may encourage them to become greener residents!
Next month’s question…
What community project do you think would be worth introducing in the borough?

Vans are often targeted by thie ves for the tools stored inside. If you hav e to leave tools in a van overnight, it's a good idea to mark them clearly with your name / company name and address using pain t pens and seal with a clear lacquer spray. Alte rnatively, you can use a variety of other prop erty marking systems. Items that are clearly marked are less desirable and more difficult to sell on. Consider using a lockable cab inet within your van to store tools – a num ber of security rated products are avai lable. Small cameras are also designed to record inside vehicles. Hello, I am Linda Regan, local actress and crime author. I’m delighted to have been invited to contribute a monthly column in this entertaining and informative magazine.

There is a wonderful saying: Everything’s coming up roses, and of course being June, this is the month where those sweet-smelling beauties come into full bloom. And (as we go to press), if everything covid-wise remains on its upward turn, then this year’s coming of roses represents the final days of lockdown. It’s time to move on once again, but as we do, I, for one, will be taking with me the lessons I have learned along this journey.
NO JOB TOO SMALL OR TOO LARGE

Fresh vegan & vegetarian Indian homestyle food with a modern healthy twist.
was a food bank in my local supermarket (Waitrose), and I’ll always pop a bag of sugar, pasta, flour or soup in there as I shop from now on - a much- needed help. Thank you, Waitrose. Working from home has had its benefits too – I have learned to cook! Instead of a ready-made in the oven, now I use better ingredients and make better food. Home cooked with healthy ingredients means healthier families and fewer visits to the doctor. (A needed plus for our overworked National Health). Yes, we have all made sacrifices, and yes, we have been British through and through with our stiff upper lip and the bumping of elbows, while hiding the pain in our hearts from missing and even losing relatives and friends. So, welcome June, I shout, because everything truly is coming up roses. Hugs all round, get-togethers with friends and families, and no more four-inch, wrong-coloured hair roots! Time to celebrate, but let’s stay cautious.
Everything’s coming up roses
I no longer think of neighbours as the Australian soap that launched the careers of Jason Donavan and Kylie Minogue, because through the Thursday nights of clapping and saluting our National Health heroes, I now know all the people in my street. These are people I no longer walk past in the road; they are people who I stop and say hello to, and we ask each other how we are - and mean it. We know if we need each other and we are there. I think we have all had time to slow down and take check of our lives and now notice what’s around us. I noticed, for the first time, that there

My name is Michelle, and I am passionate about what I do. I work locally as a Celebrant, in and around Orpington. Having been an Orpington resident for most of my life, I feel it is important to work closely with the community that I live in, and as a result of that, I have also co-founded The Bereavement Café in Orpington. So, my role as a Celebrant is to work with families who have lost a loved one and help them create a unique and fitting ceremony, to help them say goodbye. But I have also introduced something called, “Remember Me” and that is to help people document their wishes before they die. This is a really simple way of instructing your loved ones with what you want, when that time comes. We can discuss everything from music choices, your life story, colours, themes, and have it all recorded safely, so that when the time comes your family members aren’t left scratching their heads trying to work out what you would have wanted.
If you have any questions about anything please do not hesitate to contact me at michelleharvey.lifecelebrant@yahoo.com

Your reputation is everything - so what is yours? Ask your customers, ask people who know of your business - what do they think of your business? If you use review services, are people saying what you want them to say about you?

Joining forces years later, the FWD was born in September 2020. It initially started as a reunion but then quickly established into a networking event to bring about the importance of collaboration! The idea behind this has become a roaring success, bringing people and businesses together to collaborate and build long-lasting relationships. The events are known for being ‘Unashamedly Commercial’ and attendees are encouraged to ‘sell the sizzle not the sausage’ in their 60-second pitches.
The Friday Wind Down (FWD) Collaborative Networking event offers a relaxed and fun way to end a week of meetings. Here’s how it all began…

How to…create the perfect balcony garden Essential Living teamed up with Lynsey Abbott, Outdoor Living Buyer at Dobbies Garden Centres, to offer five tips for creating a stylish balcony garden set up, ideal for summer. 1. Pick a scheme: This will help you to decide
on colours, planting styles and accessories. Experts recommend two different themes this summer, ‘Tropical’ and ‘Calm Sanctuary’. 2. Utilise your space: When you’re planning the space, think about what you want to use it for and what would give you maximum use and enjoyment. For example, if you want to use the space for dining but your balcony isn’t very well protected and you don’t have a lot of storage space for bigger items, foldable bistro sets are the ideal solution.
3. Compact gardening: Keep it simple to stop the space from becoming too busy. For example, a hanging basket to grow tomatoes or kitchen herbs, plus a few containers with low maintenance plants or seeds to add to each season. A living wall is also great for small spaces. 4. Pick a statement piece: Why not use your balcony as a plug free space for relaxing? A single statement piece of furniture is a great way to achieve this - from a laid-back lounger or rocking chair, to a chaise lounge or standing egg chair. 5. Accessorise: Use accessories from inside your home to soften the look – from houseplants to cushions and throws. Lanterns can also help to add a pop of colour and double up as lighting.
WHAT CAN YOU DO ABOUT NOISY OR UNRULY NEIGHBOURS? by AMANDA HAMILTON, Chief Executive,
National Association of Licensed Paralegals (NALP)
Noisy neighbours? Good news: Something can be done! Every local or district council has an environmental health department. These teams are known as ‘Noise or Nuisance Teams’. There are certain things that noise teams are unable to deal with (noise relating to traffic, planes, trains and domestic noises like footsteps, crying babies, kitchen appliances etc). Everything else is actionable. For example, neighbours playing loud music at night. Once reported, the department instructs a team that contacts you to enquire whether the noise is ongoing. If it is, they come round and experience the noise from your home. If they believe the noise is excessive, they can initially talk to the neighbours to ask them to refrain and give them a warning. After the first visit, a letter gets sent to the neighbours confirming the Noise Team’s visit and explaining that, if the team is requested to visit again, a second warning will be given. On a third visit, the team has the right to serve a notice threatening prosecution and/or seizure of equipment. If you still have trouble, you could always apply to the court for an injunction. This is where a paralegal can help; they are trained to assist consumers make applications to courts and give advice.

Why have a Will ?
Making Orpington better… We caught up with six-year-old Orpington-based Fox Hinchion, who has made it his mission to pick up litter on his way to school. In Fox’s own words: “Earth is not a bin!” 1. Hey Fox! We hear you’re doing great things on picking up litter on your school commute. What made you want to start doing this? We started picking up litter because we saw
loads of plastic rubbish on the way to school and I wanted to make it nicer. Plastic is not good for the earth and I like making where we live cleaner. But the more you look, the more you see.
2 . What do you use to collect the litter and
how do you dispose of it?
My daddy and I both use litter pickers, and my daddy carries a big black bag for the rubbish. We have a full bag nearly every day. We take it home to our house but it can be quite smelly. So much of it could be recycled.
3. What are some of the most common items that you find? And what’s the worst thing? We find a lot of different things. Plastic bags, face
masks, dog poo bags, kebab boxes and plastic forks, plastic bottles, tins, crisp and sweets wrappers and some plastic things we don’t know
advertorial
what they are. There is a lot of really old rubbish stuffed in the bushes and new rubbish in the park every day. Smokes (what Fox calls cigarette butts) and the plastic wrapping from the boxes are the worst to pick up. They are everywhere, I’d never smoke in my life. They are disgusting. I wish people wouldn’t throw them on the floor.
4. What would you say to people who litter? One day a group of bigger kids threw big drinks
cups on the floor right by us. It was such a waste and it made me sad. We picked them up. I want to say to them “The earth is not a bin. You are very naughty, please pick up your rubbish. It makes the planet happier.” I would want everyone who sees this to just do a little bit to help. A little bit every day helps a lot.
5. Are you going to continue with your litter picks?
I will keep picking up litter because it makes me feel happy. A lot people say “well done” or tell us where we can find more rubbish. I don’t want to tell people what to do, I’m not a boss, but if they see litter I want them to decide to pick it up on their own, not just tell me and my daddy. If everyone joined in and helped we could clean it all up. But I would like to build a super team of litter pickers.
Recycle your old writing implements and ink cartridges and raise money for our school!
It is estimated that around two thirds of UK adults do not have a valid or up to date Will There are lots of reasons why having a valid Will is essential. Some of the key benefits include: • Executors – You can appoint executors who will
be responsible for the administration of your estate and ensure assets are paid to the correct beneficiaries. Without a valid Will, the rules of intestacy dictate who can apply to act as the personal representative of your estate. This could be an extended family member with little or no knowledge of your position.
• Beneficiaries – You can decide who should
inherit your assets and in what proportion. Again, without a valid Will, rules of intestacy will apply. This can result in some unfortunate situations, such as having to sell assets/the family home or assets being passed to distant relatives you don’t speak to.
• Guardians – You can appoint guardians to look
after any minor children. In the absence of appointed guardians, the court would determine who should have responsibility for your children.
• Family disputes – Losing a loved one is a
stressful and difficult time. Unfortunately, this can cause disputes over the distribution of an estate. A valid Will can help to alleviate uncertainty and avoid lengthy and costly disagreements.
• Tax – Generally, Inheritance Tax planning needs to
be undertaken during an individual’s lifetime. However, a valid Will often results in a lower liability.
Putting a Will in place is important. However, keeping it up to date is equally crucial. It is estimated that many people with a Will have experienced a significant life event, which could mean it is now invalid or out of date. For example, getting married will invalidate your Will unless appropriate clauses are included. Other events such as the birth of a child, the death of a relative or divorce could mean your Will requires an update to properly execute your wishes.
If you would like to find out more about how to prepare or update a Will, please call Craig Harman on 01892 543900 or visit our website perrysaccountants.co.uk

NEW SAFETY TECH FOR RAIL PASSENGERS Whoosh, a software creator, has developed a new QR-enabled at-seat, real-time platform for the rail sector. The Real-Time Journey Dashboard will transform how real-time communication is enhanced at all stages of a train journey to improve the customer journey experience while providing a multitude of train operator benefits. Not reliant on train Wi-Fi, the new tech will also enable twoway communication between the operator and passenger and users can also request specific station assistance or report issues to receive a swift response. QR codes will be placed on each seat to be scanned so that the information is entirely bespoke and, in the case of sexual harassment, the operators or police can pinpoint passengers’ exact location with CCTV being live-linked or the train being boarded at the next station.

Investing in smart tech can save you over £317 a year! Despite nearly a third (29%) of Brits reporting an increase in their energy bills since the first lockdown, a study by Confused.com has revealed that almost half of smart tech owners reported an average annual saving of £318 by swapping appliances to smart devices, making them well worth the investment. The most popular device is the Smart TV, with nearly half of people having one, followed by smart speakers, thermostats, smart light bulbs and WiFi routers. With many people continuing to work from home for the foreseeable future, household bills have increased. However, it seems that owning a smart device could help in reducing these costs, with nearly half of smart tech owners reporting an average annual saving of £318 by swapping appliances to smart devices, making them worth the investment. Max Green, Energy expert at Confused.com, said: “With doorbells that can direct postmen to the right place to deliver a parcel, to smart thermostats that can allow you to adjust your heating from an app on your phone, there are many benefits of smart home technology that may make it worth the investment. While many smart devices aren't cheap to buy, our research shows that the savings are significant - those who own a smart home tech device have been able to save more than £300, on average.”

The treatment: My lashes and eye area were first prepped and then covered in a special serum that first straightens them from the root and secondly gives them a super curled look. It’s like a mini perm for your lashes! It was a very relaxing treatment; I had to keep my eyes closed and I wasn’t complaining about that. All in all, it took less than an hour from start to finish. I was also given an eyelash tint so my lashes really stood out. The results: Results last between 6-8 weeks and I was thrilled that I didn’t need either my eyelash curler or mascara in the weeks that followed. Not only was it a time saver, the results looked like I‘d spent loads of time on them. Would I recommend? Absolutely! Especially if going on holiday or out for a special occasion. BEING MOLE AWARE
by Dr TIM CUNLIFFE, Skin Specialist at The MOLE Clinic, Skin Cancer Lead for the Department of Dermatology at South Tees Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust As the weather warms up it’s important to follow sun safety advice such as wearing sunscreen with a high SPF and UVA rating and avoid burning at all costs. Damage to the skin cannot be reversed and skin cancer is the most common cancer in the UK, with melanoma skin cancer being the most serious form. That’s why it’s vital to keep an eye on your moles. At The MOLE Clinic, we recommend following the ‘ABCDEFG Rule’: A – Asymmetry: Look for moles that are asymmetrical in shape, where one half of the mole is unlike the other. B – Border: Does the mole have an irregular border? Is it scalloped, jagged or poorly defined? C – Colour and Comparison: Does the mole have more than one colour and does the mole look different to your other moles? D – Diameter: Check the diameter of the mole to see if it is bigger than 7mm (about the size of the end of a pencil). However, most skin cancer start off smaller than this and it is important to check for any lesion that is new, changing or unusual, regardless of size. E – Evolving: Is the mole evolving or changing size shape or colour? FG – Is the skin lesion elevated, firm to touch and growing in a sustained manner? If the answer is ‘yes’ to any of these questions, it’s sensible to have the mole checked by a skin specialist. We recommend having a routine mole check by a specialist once a year to help detect any skin cancers whilst still very early and easily treated. The MOLE Clinic now also offers At Home online mole screening service for adults

Make sure your dog has plenty of water and a shady area to cool down. A paddling pool can be great for dogs to splash around in and cool off! Plan your dog walks for cooler times of the day too, such as early morning or evening.
•
When planning a trip or a new walking route with your four-legged friend, always check whether dogs are welcome, including at beaches, nature reserves and beauty spots, or food and drink pitstops. Never leave your dog alone in a car, especially during warm weather – dogs die in hot cars every year.

Short Story
CLASSIFIED LISTINGS
MY MAGICAL GRANDAD by ELLA A. BROWN
Kai followed his mum as they walked up the hill to grandad’s house. His mum carried his overnight bag in one arm and smiled at him; “Hurry Kai, we don’t want to keep him waiting.” Kai grinned and ran up to the front door, too excited to stop and look at the city in the distance like he always did. The door swung open and grandad smiled at them both. “Afternoon! I hope the journey wasn’t too long for you both.” Kai didn’t hear mum’s reply because he saw rainbow lights further down the hallway. He almost jumped in excitement when he realised what it was – magic! Mum didn’t believe it, but Kai knew it was true. After all, grandad was the most magical person in the world. His mum turned to him and ruffled his dark hair, pushing him gently towards grandad as she handed him the overnight bag.
Small rainbow lights floated in the hallway as Kai went upstairs to the guest room. He wished he could tell his mum about grandad’s magic and his own magic too, but she’d understand one day. Grandad had put his overnight bag near the window and Kai knew he’d be waiting to help him with his homework. He took his book out of the bag, but his jaw dropped when he saw the clock. Oh no! He was late again! He looked at the stairs and then at his hands. “I could get downstairs in a boring way, or the fun way” he thought. He chose the fun way and moments later his whole body glowed as he flew downstairs and along the hallway! “Woooooo!” he laughed as he spun in the air and glowed brighter as he flew towards grandad. Grandad smiled when he saw Kai who floated to the ground, the glow disappearing as he put his book on the table. He frowned. “Do I have to do this Grandad?”
“Now, I don’t want to hear about any misbehaviour from you, young man! And none of this nonsense about magic.”
Grandad’s hand glowed as a pen floated into Kai’s hand. “You know your mum wants you to do well in school.”
Kai gave her a mock salute and he and grandad waved until she was out of sight. Grandad turned to him, a cheeky smile on his face; “Right then, you must be hungry after such a long journey. Let’s get you some food.” Kai nodded and the two of them headed inside.
Kai sighed and got on with it and by the time he was done even grandad was tired.
The food at grandad’s was always delicious; burgers and chips, pizza, chicken sandwiches and more was on the kitchen table when Kai walked in. Just as he wondered how he would eat it all, his stomach let out a loud rumble and grandad laughed.
Grandad smiled as he noticed Kai falling asleep over the homework.
“Go on, you choose first” he suggested. Kai filled his plate with every food item on the table and grandad asked about school as they ate. Time passed by very quickly as they laughed and talked. It always felt magical at grandad’s house.

Mindful eating is all about paying attention to the way we eat. There’s an argument that suggests eating mindfully enhances the enjoyment of food, improves digestion, regulates our appetite and can even aid weight loss; tuning in to what we eat can help us make better choices. Mindfulness is the practise of present moment awareness based on ancient wisdom like Buddhism. In recent years, meditation experts such as Jon Kabat-Zin and Andy Puddicombe of Headspace, have helped the world see that mindfulness is not just a spiritual practice, it is grounded in science. When we talk about mindfulness when eating, it’s important to pay attention to details. This includes being aware of the textures, flavours and aromas of what we consume, and savouring and chewing at least 32 times before swallowing. It also means being present when we eat - paying attention to the act of eating and being aware of it. As a holistic cookery coach and healthy eating business teacher, this is very close to my heart. Cooking with awareness is a great way to relax and fully engage all our senses into the culinary experience. Chopping colourful vegetables, using vibrant healing spices and condiments and allowing ourselves to acknowledge the swish, crackle, splash, sizzle, drizzle, glaze and dash of cookery and eating is soothing and contributes to our holistic wellbeing. Eating well to stay well on an emotional, mental,

spiritual and physical level becomes easier with mindful eating as our holistic wellbeing directly influences the quality of our life. Have you heard the expression ‘eating a rainbow’? It’s not just a powerful buzz word as it’s backed by many health disciplines and makes sense as our energy centres (known as chakras) share the same colours. Each one has a specific location and function to keep us well. The fact that nature has gifted us a bounty of colourful fruits, vegetables, herbs and spices to enjoy just intensifies that power of holistic eating and is a cue that we can stay in balance with our body by opening our mind to the power of holistic eating. Becoming mindful of what we eat affects us on every level and it’s what holistic eating is about. For example, our gut is our second brain is a powerful statement which proves that what our gut receives impacts our mind, thoughts, health and overall performance. The ‘second brain’ in our gut communicates with the brain in our head and plays a key role in certain diseases in our bodies and in our overall mental health. Certain foods help boost serotonin naturally and these include salmon, eggs, spinach and seeds. Serotonin is a chemical found in the brain, blood, intestines, and connective tissues of the human body. It causes blood vessels to contract, helps transmit information across the nervous system and plays a role in brain function. Good culture in our gut and adding fermented foods, fruits, vegetables, clean protein, nuts, seeds for healthy fats and even choosing portion sizes and food groups according to time of the day, all influences our wellbeing. Eating mindfully also allows us to check if we’re really hungry or if we’re simply eating ‘because it’s time’. So the next time you sit down to a meal, get rid of any distractions – TV, phones, reading material etc and really focus on eating mindfully and being aware of what you’re putting into your body – you’d be amazed at how this helps stay in tune with our needs and promotes overall wellbeing.
