CONTENTS

We read an interesting report from My Online Therapy which looked at what social isolation has taught us – and how we can learn from the coronavirus lockdown, and thought it would be nice to share some of the positives the report revealed… 1. We’re all in this together supporting the greater good – During this time we will all feel lonely at some point, however it’s great to see that the majority of us are respecting social distancing guidelines to support the greater good. 2. We’re appreciating local businesses – Reports of local businesses experiencing surges of customers wanting to support them during this challenging time is a wonderful thing. 3. We’re more focused on our physical health – We’re all becoming a lot more conscious of our physical wellbeing which in turn is helping us to feel better at a time we need it more than ever. 4. The NHS and carers are receiving the recognition they deserve - From Captain Sir Tom Moore raising millions for the NHS by completing laps in his garden and Thursday night’s weekly ‘Clap for our Carers’, to the ‘run 5, donate £5’ fitness challenge taking Instagram by storm, the nation is coming together to proudly celebrate all the amazing people who are caring for those being treated with and recovering from the coronavirus. 5. We’re bonding as a community – Whether it’s supporting elderly and vulnerable neighbours with shopping or making a conscious effort to say hello to those around you, communities all over the UK are coming together and forming relationships helping us to feel more connected and united. 6. We appreciate the great outdoors, now more than ever – One thing the lockdown has taught us is to enjoy the great outdoors we have available to us, including all the nature we’d usually take for granted. 7. We’re learning how to express ourselves creatively – Many of us are trying out a new creative hobby to express and occupy ourselves. 8. There’s a growing appreciation for the everyday norm – Getting showered and dressed each day as we would if we were going about our normal activities is being appreciated more than ever in helping us to feel in control of the current situation and allowing us to start our day off in a positive way. 9. We have a newfound respect for our planet – There has been a marked decrease in smog, air pollution and CO2 levels across the globe with countries like Japan and Venice in particular experiencing huge positive changes to their environments. 10. We’re opening up about our feelings – All of us in some way will be worried about what happens post-COVID. The current environment is so challenging, not only because it’s constantly evolving, but also because coping with isolation is beyond anything we have ever had to deal with before, which makes it an anxious time. That’s why it’s great to see so many of us opening up about our feelings and how they are changing, helping us to support ourselves and others in the best way possible. However, sometimes this can be difficult to do, and that’s ok, because there are other ways you can receive the support you need such as online therapy. The most important thing is to share your feelings and talk to someone.

Getting Orpington to know

VE Day in lockdown: Memories of a momentous day in Orpington history As we entered the 46th day of the strangest of times in living memory, much of the country was commemorating another event no less significant to the people that lived through it. Friday 8th May, 2020 marked the 75th anniversary of the end of the fierce fighting of the Second World War (Victory in Europe Day – VE Day), and although the people of Orpington were doing so, in the main, behind closed doors the spirit of celebration was definitely in evidence. And VE Day was a timely reminder to appreciate our communities - the spirit, courage and support shown by many during lockdown, just as communities did 75 years ago. On the day itself – and with our abundant access to a wide range of technology – we were able to celebrate in more ways than one. We had live streams online and on social media, downloadable VE educational packs and activities for children and of course, a BBC televised event showcasing memories and music from a bygone era. This year’s celebrations saw plenty of effort despite lockdown, including a beautiful display at The Old Forge in Farnborough Village…

The streets of Orpington were thronged on the day itself back in 1945 with street parties and gatherings celebrating the unconditional surrender. Some local residents reminisce… ‘This is the Mount, which was at the bottom of Mountview Road. Picture taken from across the little stream, which ran along the bottom of the mount, now covered by the extended Perry Hall Road and covered by housing. A great playground when we were kids. I would have been two and a half at the time.’ Roy Dennard ‘My Dad, uncle and nan are in this photo! They moved from Peckham to Sandy Lane to avoid the bombing.’ Jo Harding

POETRY CORNER Our cheeky visitor We love to watch the birds we see when looking out our window, From parakeets to blue tits and the sparrows down below. We always fill the feeders, we never let them down, However there’s a downside and it kind of makes us frown. We also have a visitor who likes to climb and steal He knows when I am watching, his behaviour makes me reel! He climbs on all the feeders, until he makes them break, Eating all the bird food, destruction in his wake. Although he looks angelic with his great big fluffy tail, We all know that he’s naughty as the pergola he scales. He taunts us from the top of it, I think he likes the game. Such a frequent visitor we’ve given him a name. Cyril is the naughty scamp a squirrel is his kind, It’s sort of nice to see his face as we peer through the blind. We always love to see him there as we look out the door, As seeing any wildlife, leaves us wanting more. So feed the birds and squirrels and hedgehogs that you see, And plant your summer flowers for those lovely bumblebees. So although that cheeky squirrel, likes to steal the food, When we see his furry face it always lifts our mood!

When you say goodbye to a loved one, it’s important that you get the right service that’s fitting to them. My name’s Michelle and I’m passionate about being a life celebrant. The way I work is by gaining a better understanding of the life of a loved one so that I can present a ceremony that is both bespoke and unique. A ‘Remember Me’ package also offers the option to plan a service in advance. My second passion is the community I’ve been part of for many years; I co-founded The Bereavement Café in Orpington to offer support to those who have lost loved ones. If you need to talk about any issues relating to the loss of a loved one, please know that I am here to support others.

Community News POLICE UPDATES

• Bromley Council and Community Links Bromley have announced a donation of £170,000 in emergency funding for local charities and community organisations, thanks to support from Direct Line Group. Grants of up to £10,000 will be made through the establishment of a Direct Line Community Fund, administered by Community Links Bromley, an organisation that coordinates the voluntary sector response in the borough.

• Lockdown has made media stars of Better librarians

in Bromley and is creating growing new audiences for library activities online. With all Bromley’s physical libraries shut since the end of March, as part of the Government guidelines, libraries and leisure operator GLL (the social enterprise that operates under the Better brand) has moved much of its services online, providing support and relief for families enduring weeks in lockdown. Librarians have shown their creative sides, taking producer/director/actor credits when turning their gardens, kitchens and living rooms into ad hoc broadcasting studios for story times, rhyme and sign, and craft sessions for children. For adults, there are more craft sessions, alongside virtual walks, poetry readings and even a podcast.

Thames Water is carrying out works for new water connections on the A208 Chislehurst Road from 8th-12th June where part of the road will be closed. Local Heroes... 5 Minutes With...

Michelle Paul

Alexandra Lewis nominated Michelle Paul from Turn Around Charity as a local hero. Alexandra said: “Literacy and

numeracy – that many of us take for granted – are crucial to create a happier society and healthy economy. The consequences of not having these skills are not being able to apply for jobs, tell the time, travel or engage socially while causing low self-esteem and depression. Michelle Paul began to recognise that many adults and children struggled with reading and maths when she needed to step in to teach basic skills to her young daughter in 1984. Since 2006, when she officially set up the Turn Around charity, Michelle and a group of dedicated volunteers have helped over 1,500 adults to build essential life skills. In addition she has passionately called for the government to improve its teaching in schools. As a result of her tireless commitment, Michelle was awarded an MBE in the December 2019 honours list.

Michelle has lived in South London (mainly Bromley) most of her life. After leaving school she worked as a solicitor’s articled clerk and an ancillary in the Probation Service. She has two children and four grandchildren, and while her work at Turn Around doesn’t leave much free time, Michelle enjoys country walks, the theatre and cinema, reading, crosswords and Pilates. How does it feel to be nominated as a Local Hero? I certainly don’t think I’m a hero. The heroes in our charity are the students (most of the adults have had to be very brave in asking for help and we salute them), and the volunteers – tutors, trustees and others – who go ‘above and beyond’ to ensure that our students receive the best service that can be provided.

How did Turn Around come to be set up and why? Many years ago, I found that most of the children I knew (including my own) were not being taught how to read through phonics (the sounds of the letters) as I had been, and were struggling - in most cases they were unable to read. I discovered that I could help them using phonics. In recent years the use of phonics has once more been taught, to great advantage. Many adults also came to my attention (I suppose because I was aware of the problem) and I found myself able to help them in the same way. After 20 years, it seemed sensible to set up a charity so as to try to help more people than I was able to on my own, so Turn Around was established in 2005.

What exactly does Turn Around charity offer? We offer children and adults free one-to-one literacy and numeracy tutoring, either at our own centre in St Mary Cray or in various settings in and around the Borough of Bromley. Some 30 volunteers help 50-100 students. We also offer help with English language for native speakers and those for whom English is not their mother tongue. We have a 98% success rate in helping students Turn their lives Around. I should stress that most of our students are native Brits who, whether or not they have any sort of physical or learning difficulty, need not be deprived of the benefits of being able to read, write and do basic maths. More than nine million adults in England are illiterate, innumerate or both.

14 Life in... Orpington June 2020

What does a typical day look like for you? In addition to our St Mary Cray centre we run outreach sessions in Anerley, Downham, Mottingham and various locations in Bromley. Some of these are in facilities kindly provided by another charity and by Bromley council. Three days a week I spend a couple of hours in the morning and up to four hours in the afternoon at one or other of these. Between two and four volunteers are working in each session, and at present we normally see between two and eight students during that time. Material is tailored to suit each student, so every session will feel different. It’s a lot of fun for both students and volunteers, and of course it is rewarding for everyone as a great deal of progress is made. During the Covid-19 lockdown, we have been doing what we can to continue working with students, wherever possible and appropriate, online, by email and by phone.

What plans do you have for the charity for the future? Our current plans are to increase our hours of opening at our St Mary Cray centre as much as possible, and to try to ensure that all those who could benefit get to hear about us; this would also mean trying to recruit more volunteers. We hope that one day our kind of service will be available all over the country. We already offer our training resources (handbook and videos) freely to anyone who wants to provide support where we can’t, and we believe that they are in use by a charity that helps refugees. Our dream is that one day our literacy and numeracy services will no longer be needed, because everyone will be literate and numerate enough to participate fully in society.

How else have you been involved in anything community-related? I was a volunteer for Bromley Home-Start (which has now sadly closed) for some years. Home-Start offers a volunteer to visit and work with a parent of a child under five, to help with any difficulties the family might be having. I also volunteered at the literacy classes provided by Bromley Adult Education. For more information on Turn Around email info@turnaroundcharity.org.uk or see turnaroundcharity.org.uk

Business Flip the business!

6 WAYS TO BRING IN EXTRA CASH AT HOME by SHON ALAM, Bidwedge

As Covid-19 continues to keep us at home it is good to find ways to keep ourselves occupied and perhaps also make a bit of extra cash. So here are six ideas that you might like to try…

1. Get creative

If you’re planning to spend time on crafting you can get your materials delivered. Whether you want to create something with yarn, wood, paper or recycled materials that you have at home, if you find (or already know) that you’re creating something people will buy, then there are lots of places to set yourself up as a seller. Start by checking out Etsy.com, Shopify.co.uk, Folksy.com and Notonthehighstreet.com. A Facebook page and Pinterest are also great (and free) ways to showcase your crafts.

2. Re-circulate your books

Review your bookshelves and decide which books you’ll re-read or pass on to friends or family. If you’re honest, the rest are simply decoration and you can sell them. Amazon is the obvious place to start – you’ll need to register as a seller (have your mobile, passport /driving licence and payment card ready). Ensure you can post what you are offering for sale or get everything ready for when you can. See https://amzn. to/2YWBLc2 Alternatively, try We Buy Books (webuybooks.co.uk) or Music Magpie (musicmagpie.co.uk).

3. Clear your cupboards

If you’re clearing out cupboards and find items worth selling, eBay is the obvious place to go. As a seller, you need to be responsible about the sending, ensuring you adhere to social distancing at the Post Office. You can make items ‘buyer collects’ however this is best only if the person is local (avoiding unnecessary journeys) and you can hand over the item using the distancing guidelines. Facebook Marketplace and Gumtree are also handy.

22 Life in... Orpington June 2020

4. What about vintage items?

VintageCashCow will buy your vintage items for cash. You put everything you want to sell in a box (during the isolation period, they are offering a free home collection service), they then value it and offer you a fair price within 48 hours. If you accept their offer they will send you a cheque or transfer the money on the same day. Any unsold items they will return for free!

5. Cash in your spare foreign currency

When clearing drawers there’s a good chance you’ll find some currency left over from holidays etc. How can you get this exchanged easily? At Bidwedge, (bidwedge.com) you create a free account, state the amount of currency you have and they will tell you the price they will pay for your currency. If you agree, post your currency to Bidwedge and the agreed amount will be paid direct into your bank account. There are no additional fees, postage is free, and all transactions are insured.

6. Make the most of your screen time

If you’re spending time on your PC or other devices use some of this time to make a little money. Surveys are popular choice although they don’t pay that well. But the only resources you need are your device and your opinion. Be careful to pick legitimate sites and ones that don’t waste your time and pay very little. Try YouGov (yougov.co.uk), Prolific (prolific.co), LifePoints (lifepointspanel.com) and Swagbucks (swagbucks. com) as starting points. You can even earn cash just by changing your browser! Look at qmee.com.

ORPINGTON NETWORKING GOES VIRTUAL IN PYJAMAS Networking isn't what it used to be. Even around Orpington, the shift from often suited and booted face-to-face networking to the online virtual version has brought with it unexpected perils (think people on Zoom calls in bed, partners in the buff walking past and the worry that when someone stands, they've not put their trousers on!) However, these meet ups are at least bringing people together - and networking is part of the lifeblood of business and the community. So, what local networking is happening? The monthly Federation of Small Business (FSB) meetings usually held at the Masala Dabbas restaurant in

Orpington are now held online. There are also free, locally-based Business Continuity Workshops online providing topical expertise to business people. All the FSB and the Business Continuity events can be found at the BCS Facebook group: facebook.com/ groups/522086558475357. Another regular, friendly local business group, BNI Lightning, meets every Thursday between 6.30 and 8.30am. To become a guest there, call Debbie Beaven on 07833 640938 or email her at debbiebeaven@ bsandb.co.uk. Darren Weale, Teepol Products, FSB and BNI Lightning

Why podcasts are a growing opportunity for business by BEN ANDERSON, Sound Rebel

The country’s listening habits are being transformed, driven by the change in the way people consume television programmes, with ondemand services becoming increasingly popular. Until the recent stay home warnings, the number of people listening to live radio had been dropping, with more people choosing to listen to podcasts regularly. A podcast is a set of digital audio files that are made available on the Internet for people to listen to immediately or download for later use. The biggest brands in the world understand the power of branded podcasts, but regardless of the size of a business, podcasts are a great way to communicate your value proposition to an engaged and captive audience.

lifeinmagazines.co.uk

Incorporating podcasts into your marketing strategy offers numerous benefits for your business and there’s never been a better time to get started. They can be a uniquely spontaneous, informal and intimate medium, perfect for delivering important insight with emotion, warmth and passion for a topic. It’s not all about well-edited scripts or carefully crafted questions, but about researching the topics carefully, agreeing what’s to be covered and then talking with friends as you would in the pub. Everyone involved can be in a separate location, which at the time of writing makes podcasts the perfect tool for bringing people together to create memorable content that an engaged audience will find truly valuable.

lifestyle THE MOST ANTICIPATED BOOKS OF 2020 (for people who want to transform their lives) The rise of non-fiction and self-help books has seen significant increase lately, as people become more aware of their health and mental state and look to find information which could help them on their journey to a healthier and happier life by making positive changes. Rutger Bruining, CEO of biography-writing service StoryTerrace, reveals his picks for the best books published this year, and discusses the benefits of documenting your own life story‌

The Catalyst: How to Change Anyone's Mind (Jonah Berger) This title will help you to understand and potentially harness the power of the "catalyst" - the person who makes the difference and initiates real change to influence people, often in the most difficult scenarios. Learn the skills of top salespeople, leaders, activists, hostage negotiators and counsellors, and how they use these skills to their advantage to influence the decisions of others and achieve incredible things.

Successful Aging: A Neuroscientist Explores the Power and Potential of Our Lives (Daniel J. Levitin) Successful Aging encourages us to completely change our perspectives on the notion of growing older and what the later decades of our life are likely to bring. In an age where our life expectancy is only set to rise, Daniel Levitin provides a new way of approaching the aging process to get the most out of our longer lives.

Don't Overthink It: Make Easier Decisions, Stop Second-Guessing, and Bring More Joy to Your Life (Anne Bogel) Arguably one of the most useful and pertinent books in today's culture, especially for younger generations, Don’t Overthink It provides an approach to being more decisive, deciding how and where to direct your energy and focus, and being more objective in making choices which will help you to spend more time enjoying and revelling in the important things in life.

You're Not Listening: What You're Missing and Why It Matters (Kate Murphy) Kate Murphy is a longtime journalist who has written for The New York Times and The Economist. In You're Not Listening, Kate shares examples from conversations across her career with people from all walks of life; secret service agents, bartenders, CEOs and toddlers, to explain how the art of listening and paying attention

24 Life in... Orpington June 2020

can truly make a huge difference in your life and your chances of success.

The Lady's Handbook for her Mysterious Illness (Sarah Ramey) Unlike the other books on this list, The Lady's Handbook is a memoir of Sarah Ramey's experiences contending with a mysterious illness, and her attempts to discover the ailment that she was suffering from that had stumped doctors for years. The memoir discusses how many of today's illnesses are born from our environment, and educates the reader on how the cornerstones of our health, (diet, sleep, exercise, work and social interactions) can interact to have adverse effects on how we feel.

Why not write your own story? With the almost limitless access to information that we have in today's world, we are arguably more aware as a society than ever before, both in terms of wider social issues, and our own health on an individual basis. However, if you're someone who recognises the benefits of such books, perhaps the best book you could read this year is the story of your own life or one of your older relatives. One thing that few of us consider is the power within the lessons and experiences that we can take from our own personal stories. Looking into your past; the highs, the lows, the failures and successes; can often provide you with many great lessons and knowledge to take forward with you, if you truly pay attention. What's more, these lessons can be invaluable for those around you, particularly younger generations of your family, to bring them closer to you and to help them learn from the experiences you have enjoyed or endured. lifeinmagazines.co.uk

BROMLEY TASK FORCE A Business Support Task Force has been set up to help coordinate partnership working to support the local economy, with business organisations working together with the council. The task force, which includes the Borough’s Business Improvement Districts (BIDs), the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) and the South East London Chamber of Commerce, is working together to ensure that businesses are supported through the immediate crisis of COVID-19, and to plan for the recovery of the local economy. This includes helping businesses access the government’s financial assistance packages and to provide advice and guidance to businesses trying to navigate the wider implications of the government’s public health measures.

Councillor Yvonne Bear, the borough’s newly appointed Business Champion and Task Force member, said: “The borough’s businesses have faced the challenges the health emergency has posed with fortitude and determination. We thank you for the extraordinary efforts that you have made to protect the wider community and play your part in fighting this virus. We will continue to advocate on your behalf, working in partnership with you and business organisations to ensure a swift recovery of the local economy.” For more information see bromley.gov.uk/COVID19BusinessSupport

Ask The Experts Q: What’s a natural but effective way for me to clean the oven? A:

Bicarbonate of soda and water is a powerful combination to tackle built up grease and dirt and it can also be used on the glass door. Mix two parts of bicarbonate of soda with 1 part water to get a fizzy paste, which will work as a light exfoliant. If you have a really bad build up, swap it for Castile soap. Rinse it off, then finish with a wipe over of lemon and vinegar to naturally disinfect the surfaces.

Caroline, Eco-Domestics, Orpington

Q: I need to get some building work done. What questions should I be asking when I receive quotes for the work?

Q: How can I improve my balance? A:

There are many factors which may cause you to have altered balance and may need looking into but one thing to try is to improve your proprioception, which refers to the body's ability to perceive its own position in space. We use this ‘sixth sense’ all the time. For example, knowing without looking whether your feet are on soft grass or hard surface, balancing to reach something from a high cupboard or knowing without looking if you have lifted your foot enough to clear a small step. Practising and maintaining your proprioception is important to help improve your balance or even fine motor skills with your hands. We all know how important having good balance is. Try closing your eyes and signing your name on a piece of paper. You can also test your balance by holding onto a surface as you stand on one leg, then see if you can lift your hands off the surface or even close your eyes – but be careful! All this will help maintain your ability to know where your body is in space and may help your balance. Keep practising as you will improve and grow a bit of your nervous system. Remember, if you don’t use it you’ll lose it!

A: When you’re doing any sort of building work it’s essential that you get someone you can trust who will do the job to a high standard and for a fair price. Some questions you should think about asking include ‘How long have you been in business?’, ‘Are you insured? And if so, for what?’, ‘Do you have references or testimonials from clients?’, ‘Who will oversee the work and who should I liaise with on the project’, ‘how and when can I make any changes to the build – before or during the construction?’, ‘what exactly does the quote include?’, ‘how long will the build take and how many people will be working on it?’ and ‘What’s your inspection process and what happens if things need to be corrected after the build? Do you do a final walk-through with me?’ Colin Wheeler, Horton Builders, Petts Wood

Q: How can I speed up my Windows PC?

A:

Remove unused programs using tool found by typing 'Add or Remove Programs' into the bottom search bar. Restart Windows. Stop programs from unnecessarily starting as soon as Windows boots by holding Ctrl-Alt-Delete keys, click 'Task-Manager' then 'Start-Up'. Disable almost everything. The programs should still work when needed. Re-enable if a problem occurs. If you’re not sure if any program is required, do a websearch or drop me an email.

Q: What garden maintenance is good for this time of year? A:

Now is the time to keep on top of the weeds with regular hoeing. Hoeing is best done when the soil is dry because it will create a dust mulch that stops the germination of new weeds. Aim to sever the top growth of the weed, just below the soil surface when hoeing, then leave it in the sun to wither and die. A short-handled hoe is good to use for a closely planted areas where you don’t want to damage any plants growing nearby and long-handled hoes are best for larger areas. You will need to dig up deep-rooted or perennial weeds by hand as hoeing won’t kill them. June is also a great time to plant summer bedding flowers and prune spring flowering shrubs (when they have finished flowering).

Parenting

Creative activities for kids

With children stuck at home, Becky Cranham of PlanBee outlines a few fun, educational activities to keep their brains ticking over… What’s cooking? Baking provides a wealth of learning

opportunities – and produces delicious results! Working through a simple recipe with your child will help develop measuring skills (Maths), following instructions (English) and can help them understand reversible and irreversible changes (Science). Top tip: Ask your child questions as you work through the recipe, such as ‘What do we need to do next?’, ‘How does our mixture look different now to before we added the flour/butter/sugar?’.

Nurture nature Planting seeds and watching them sprout and grow is always rewarding. And you don’t need a garden. Pop some multi-purpose compost in a plant pot, plastic cup or old yogurt pot, sprinkle the seeds in and cover with compost. Encourage your child to take responsibility for making sure the plant has enough water and sunlight, and challenge them to record what happens to the seed each day. Top tip: Fast growers include mung beans (2-5 days), cress (3-7 days), lima beans (4-7), sprouting seeds (4-12), radishes (7-14), pumpkin (7-21), nasturtium (14-21). Lettuce, basil, chives, mint and parsley are also relatively easy to grow. Make them an expert Are they crazy about LEGO? Challenge them to find out when it was invented, by who and how it became so popular. Do they love singing and dancing? Challenge them to write and perform their own songs, or even create a music video. Crazy about science? Challenge them to put together a demonstration or presentation about their favourite scientist. Top tip: Give your child the role of the ‘teacher’. If they feel like experts in a particular field showing off their knowledge to others, it’s more likely to keep them on track. Keep them moving YouTube is an endless source of great

exercise and dance videos for young children including Dance ‘n Beats for fun dance routines; Just Dance: more challenging videos for older children; Cosmic Kids Yoga: tie them in knots!; Jump Start Jonny: free high-energy workouts; Top tip: Make sure children warm up and warm down before and after each workout session.

Code with confidence

This is much easier than it may sound. One of our favourites is Scratch. Children can program their own interactive stories, games and animations while learning a bunch of key skills along the way. Top tip: The main Scratch site is designed for children aged 8-16, but there is also an easier version called ScratchJr for 5-to-7s.

32 Life in... Orpington June 2020

Telling a story Ask children to pick a main character, a setting and a special object and let their imaginations run riot! To present them to the world too, they could stick with the good old traditional pen and paper or try creating an eBook. Book Creator is a great free app. Top tip: Encourage your child to use this handy formula for story writing: SOMEBODY (a space ranger) WANTED (to save the world from an evil alien lord) BUT (their space ship broke down) SO (they hitched a ride with a friendly alien) THEN (they made it just in time to destroy the evil alien lord). Keep reading Check out Epic, which has access to 35,000

children’s books, learning videos, quizzes and more. You can try it free for 30 days. Encourage your child to act out the finished story or create a puppet show. Top tip: Ask them about what they have read. Use a free Reading Question Matrix .

Model making Use playdough or modelling clay to make a model of the solar system or to show the animals and plants in a habitat or food chain. Or use recycled objects, such as boxes, food packaging, bubble wrap, newspaper to make a medieval castle, a space ship, a dinosaur or a Tudor galleon. Top tip: Get your child to test ways of joining materials before they begin. Glue or masking tape, staples or glue? Getting creative Fuss-free art activities include... Rock painting: grab some small rocks or pebbles next time you go out for a walk and paint them as animals to create pet rocks! Photo cut-outs: Print off any picture and cut it in half using zigzag lines. Stick one onto a plain sheet of paper and challenge your child to complete the picture. Copy the old masters – or ‘modern’ ones such as Piet Mondrian or Kandinsky. Still life: plop an apple, a vase, a glass or a flower in front of them and ask your child to draw what they see. Squiggle art: use curvy or straight lines. Challenge your child to turn it into a drawing. Treasure hunts: Hide challenges or calculations around your home which have to be found and solved to get a prize. Sorting objects: Gather household objects and challenge your child to sort them into groups. Create a board game: get your child to make their own version of snakes and ladders, or a quiz game. Create puzzles: can your child devise a Maths puzzle or secret code to email to a friend? Turn the tables: Invite your child to be the teacher and teach you something you don’t know! lifeinmagazines.co.uk

lifestyle How to….create a great home classroom 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.

Create a dedicated ‘learning space’ by zoning off a quiet corner with a desk or table partnered with a comfy chair. Encourage excitement about their new working space by investing in new pens, stationery and desk accessories. The more their learning space feels special, the more they’ll enjoy spending time in it. Place their artwork and books around their desk, so there is constant inspiration and stimulation for their little minds. No matter how much room you have at home, be sure to get the kids moving throughout the day. Create your own timetable and allocate parts of the day to different spaces, such as a reading corner for story time, a study space for distance learning, and a messy corner for art and creative play. Use a reward chart to encourage normality, routine, and as an incentive for good behaviour and kindness.

WHAT TO DO IF YOUR CHILD SUFFERS A BURN As soon as a child suffers a burn, you need to put the affected area under cool, running water for at least 10 minutes, or until the pain is relieved. This will be more comfortable for the child if the water is cool rather than freezing cold. If there is no water available, you can use any cold harmless liquid such as milk or other drinks. If you can, gently remove any clothing on the burn, but if it stuck, leave it alone. Once the burn is cool, cover it with cling film or a clean plastic bag to prevent infection. You must seek medical advice if the burn is any one of the following: • On hands, feet, face or genitals • Larger than the size of the casualty’s hand • Is a deep, open burn

It is very important not to: • Pop blisters • Apply plasters or any other sticky or fluffy dressings • Use any lotions or potions • Listen to any old wives’ tales – butter should not be used under any circumstances Chemical burns are treated with water exactly the same way, except the cooling time should be doubled to at least 20 minutes. If your child has suffered an electrical burn, do not touch the child until they are removed from the electricity or it is switched off. There may be an entry point burn and an exit burn where the electricity has travelled through the body. Cool the burns with water for at least 10 minutes and always call for emergency help as there may be hidden internal injuries. Daisy First Aid

Home and Garden

The top 10 areas that need extra cleaning attention at home 1) Washing machine: Run the machine with a

cleaner specially designed to remove bacteria and ensure the kitchen or laundry room is well ventilated and the washing machine door and drum is left open for a while after use. 2) Door knobs and handles: These are common areas (and letterboxes) that are usually overlooked. Make sure to apply a surface cleaner to the object and wipe every inch and corner, if a small part is missed then it still opens up the risk of spreading germs throughout the house. 3) Surfaces: Surfaces in the home are high traffic areas and whether it be in the kitchen or the bathroom they need to be cleaned with anti bacterial spray to ensure they remain germ free and ready to use 4) Floors: Floors often have unseen dirt and germs and need a deeper clean. Brushing hard floors and then mopping with anti-bacterial products is a good way to keep on top of the dirt and germs. 5) Pillows & cushions: These items are getting some extra use during lockdown and need to be washed regularly as a result. Wash cushion covers

Try this: Squeeky cleaners has created organic, eco-friendly, pet safe and vegan friendly cleaning products – all 100% natural. They are made from essential oils, plant extracts and minerals that kill over 99.9% of germs and viruses. and for cushion pads or pillows use a non-bio detergent and tumble dry. 6) Lamps and light fittings: These are easy to forget but can hoard dust for a long time so need to be dusted with a soft bristled brush and for fabric shades that maybe tricky to remove, a lint roller can be effective. 7) Hallways: Hallways quickly build up dirt, especially along skirting boards, so these need to be wiped often. Pets often leave a dirt trail throughout the hallway, once they’ve returned from a walk so extra care and attention will be required. 8) Front doors: Front doors can have multiple germs and bacteria on them so it’s important to regularly wipe down the door handle with soap and water. 9) Clothes: Washing clothes in extremely hot temperatures isn’t always required and can be harmful to the environment. Tests have proven that washing your clothes at 60 degrees with a good detergent can be just as effective. 10) Oven: Baking soda and vinegar is an effective and cost-efficient way of tackling burnt on food inside of the oven.

MAKE DARK COLOURS WORK IN SMALL SPACES • Dare to go dark if you have plenty of natural light from big windows. Consider painting radiators, doorframes and shelves in the same colour to keep the look consistent. • Accessories are key to making the dark look work. Shades of lighter hues or bright pops of colour in accessories such as artwork and cushions/rugs will help tie it all together. • Keep floors and ceilings light to give balance to a room if you’re going darker on the walls, or the walls light if your floor/ceiling are dark.

5 WAYS TO MAKE YOUR GARDEN BLOOM IN A TINY SPACE While we may not all be lucky enough to own a large garden, sometimes less can be more. Whether you’re a parent looking for ways to create a kidfriendly space or a young professional wanting to squeeze in some garden furniture in your flat, here are five small garden ideas from Pinterest that will help you learn how to make your garden thrive, no matter the size of your space:

lifestyle

With the nice weather increasingly making an appearance, chances are you’ll find yourself spending more time in the garden. And if it needs a bit of sprucing up, have a look at Frenchic’s Al Fresco chalk paint range, which is both durable and weatherproof –ideal for garden furniture or those outdoor upcycling projects! Self-priming, self-sealing with a very low, almost flat finish, it is suitable for wood, laminate, UPVC and composites and metal. It’s also toxin and solvent-free, has no odour and has very low VOC meaning it’s certified safe for use on children's toys. Frenchic Paint is available from £6.95 at www.frenchicpaint.co.uk and stockists nationwide.

Going upwards: According to the Pinterest 100, vertical gardens are on the rise with searches increasing by 287%. Whether you’re looking for unique designs in your back garden or efficient and practical ways to grow your vegetables, going upwards with your garden is a great way to save space and make it look not only taller, but bigger. Make a splash: Sometimes adding a water feature can go a long way in creating a bigger space. Consider installing a fountain or a small waterfall as part of the feature because for many, the sound of falling water can be quite idyllic and will encourage hard working individuals to sit outside and relax after a long day. Play with colour: For those of you looking to make up for what you lack in floor space, simply add a touch of colour. Using bright blocks of colour are a great way to add some vibrancy into your garden and breathe in new energy! Box your plants: If you are a keen herb grower but don’t have enough space for these to flourish in your garden, many people are hanging fixed planters underneath their window sills. This is great way to save space and make sure your plants and herbs can still grow! Draper Tools commissioned the research of 2,000 adults

How to speed up video game downloads New research from Uswitch.com has revealed the fastest and slowest video games to download, depending on where you live around the world. From remote working to gaming, the number of households attempting to access the Internet at the same time is causing connections to perform at a slower speed, which will further increase download times for the latest video game releases. Here, broadband expert Ernest Doku offers 10 top tips for speeding up video game downloads… 1.

Ensure your console has the latest available system update: Before starting to download a large video game, make sure you’ve checked your settings to see if you’ve got the latest firmware as this can drastically improve the performance of your console and can make game downloads faster.

2. Reducing network traffic: While households remain (mostly) in lockdown you’ll experience an increase in overall network traffic overall as well as just in your own home. Similarly, avoiding the peak internet rush hours (5pm onwards) when downloading your games is the best way to overcome this issue, try downloading late at night or early in the morning. 3. Disconnect Internet connections on other devices: Many other devices found within your home such as your computer, laptop, or smartphone can cause a lot of strain on the internet, resulting in slow download speeds. To speed up game downloads try disconnecting all devices from the internet during the downloading process. 4. Use a wired connection instead of Wi-Fi: A wired internet connection can provide faster download speeds than basic Wi-Fi. Try connecting an ethernet cable into your internet router and rear of the console.

jeshoots.com/Unsplash

5. Reboot your internet router: Download speeds are often the result of a technical issue with your internet router; by unplugging and replugging your router you’ll reset the connection and increase the download speed. 6. Only download one game at any one time: Xbox and other consoles allow you to download multiple games at one time, but this has a massive impact on the overall download speed. Downloading one game at a time will help reduce video game download duration. 7. Using the rest mode on PlayStation 4: When downloading video games on your PS4 switch your console to rest mode; using this setting will increase download speeds. Rest mode means your console is still operating but at a lower power consumption, meaning less resource is being consumed. 8. Close other games and apps: It’s tempting to play games or use other apps while a game is downloading, but this will have an impact on download time. Closing down any other apps or games during the download will allow your console to run faster. 9. Restart your console: If you’re facing a large download, then it’s definitely worth getting your console system ready by doing a system restart. When restarting your console it will close all applications allowing everything to run much more smoothly which can in turn boost your video game download speed. 10. Move your router away from other devices: Like other wireless devices, routers can experience interference when surrounded by other electrical devices. Test your wireless restrictions by turning off all other devices around the router and do a speed test to check the difference.

Brits spend £40,000 on tech during their lifetime The typical adult will spend around £40,000 on tech during their lifetime, according to a study by musicMagpie. This will include 21 mobile phones, 16 games consoles and 16 laptops or computers – along with more than 1,000 batteries and 126 charging cables. They’ll also possess a total 13 TVs, 16 tablets and 13 cameras – not forgetting 21 pairs of headphones and 16 sets of speakers. However, the research found almost a fifth of adults will simply bin their tech once they’ve finished with it – even if the device is still in working order. And more than a third of the 2,000 adults polled will hang on to their old gadgets because they ‘don’t know what else to do with them.’ It also emerged the average adult could currently make £2,094.77 from trading in the tech in their home, based on the average value musicMagpie will pay customers when they sell technology items.

lifeinmagazines.co.uk

The study also found those polled will own 16 PC monitors, 21 smartwatches and 16 MP3 players during their lifetime. And during a typical year they will spend almost £309 on the latest gadgets and gizmos, with another £25.22 a month spent on contracts for devices such as mobile phones. But while three in five claim they ‘couldn’t live’ without their beloved tech, more than a fifth said they tend to replace their old devices because they have become dated. More than two thirds usually purchase new gadgets because their old one has stopped working. It also emerged that when it comes to dumping the products they no longer use, 42% aren’t sure about how to recycle tech and dispose of it responsibly. But nearly three quarters have never heard of the term ‘e-waste’ – a term to describe discarded electrical items – despite 74% admitting they contribute to this. And while 79% recycle whatever they can of plastics, just 44% have recycled electronics.

Health & Beauty Beat the bloat

Most of us can feel a bit bloated after an indulgent meal, but bloating can be a sign your digestive system isn’t working optimally. For the one in five people in the UK who have Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), bloating can be a common, and very upsetting and uncomfortable occurrence. But you might not know there are a few triggers, from caffeine to artificial sweeteners, which we consume every day without realising the harm they could be causing. Here Dr Simon Smale, Gastroenterologist and Clinical Director of GI Medicine and Surgery at the Manchester Royal Infirmary, who is a Trustee of the IBS Network, shares his expertise about bloating, and what we can do to help alleviate it…

Why do we bloat? Bloating is caused by excess gas in the bowel, which leads to discomfort and swelling. Constipation and digestive disorders such as IBS, which cause unpredictable bowel movements, can also lead to bloating. Holding in wind can also cause more issues in the long term, so let it out! Around 70% of the immune system is located in your gut, so gut bacteria play an important role. If normal digestive function is interrupted, good bacteria decreases, which can lead to an expanded abdomen.

Surprising food and drinks that cause bloating Rich, fatty or processed foods and eating too much are known to cause the dreaded stomach bloat, but other some of our everyday food and drinks may also be causing us issues, including our daily coffee habit… 1. Caffeine can have a negative effect on the gut and can promote wind and gas, so try to limit yourself to a couple of cups of coffee a week rather than a couple of cups a day. 2. Too much sugar leads to an overgrowth of gas-causing bacteria. 3. Artificial sweeteners are indigestible sugars that can have adverse effects on the gut and can lead to trapped wind. Diet drinks and even diet foods often contain indigestible sugars that ferment in the large bowel. This causes wind and bloating symptoms. Many animal studies have shown that sweeteners completely disrupt the good gut bacteria, which leads to an imbalance known as dysbiosis. 4. Not only do the gases in fizzy drinks cause your stomach to bloat, drinking too many can make you feel anxious. This is due to the gut brain connection. Recent research by the British Gut Project shows that alcoholic spirits in particular are bad news for gut health. However, it’s not all bad news where alcohol is concerned, as it also found that red wine can be beneficial for the gut. Its benefits are down to polyphenols, the top class antioxidants which you can also find in artisanal ciders, which feed the microbiome, increasing the diversity of microbes.

Beat the bloat: The daily habits which could be causing your pain Steer clear of highly processed foods and avoid anything that’s greasy, gassy or spicy. It’s also not a good idea to eat all your calories in one go at the end of the day. Eat mindfully: Take your time, chew every mouthful and don’t gulp food down. Sit down in a relaxed environment – preferably not at your desk and not in a stressful work situation. Try incorporating prebiotic ingredients. Prebiotics act as the ‘fertiliser’ for the good bacteria and encourages it to proliferate and in time counter the effects of more harmful bacteria. Leeks, onions and garlic are all prebiotics. Another great tip is to stock up on fermented foods and incorporate them into dishes you are cooking. Like prebiotics, naturally fermented foods are a great addition to your fridge or store cupboard as they can help with your digestive health. So long as you are not lactose intolerant, kefir is great as a dessert, a topping or as dressing. Miso paste can be used as a drink (diluted in hot water), as marinade for fish or meat, or even as a dressing. Try buying an unpasteurised version if you can. You might also want to consider using Raw Organic Unpasteurised Apple Cider Vinegar in salad dressings. Other fermented foods to consider are kimchi, kombucha and sauerkraut all of which you can now buy in good supermarkets. Exercise has been shown countless times to help gut symptoms from flatulence, to bloating and constipation. Exercise that gets you out of breath such as jogging or speed walking at intensity done for half an hour a few times a week helps both bowel function and heart rate. If prebiotics act like fertiliser for the gut, probiotics are the seeds - they help the healthy growth of ‘good bacteria’. Consider taking a daily probiotic supplement to tackle your bloating symptoms. However, not all probiotics are the same. You need to look for one that has been clinically proven in clinical trials such as Alflorex. It takes 2-4 weeks to prime the gut after which your bloating will start to deflate. Alflorex has partnered with the IBS Network to offer new members eight weeks worth of Alflorex worth £49.90. See https://bit.ly/alflorexibs

UP THE VITAMIN D

lifestyle

Public Health England (PHE) has released new advice, urging the nation to supplement vitamin D daily taking into account many Brits’ new indoor lifestyles during the nationwide lockdown. The announcement comes following an increase in clinical trials and research papers surrounding vitamin D and its potential ability to; aid in the fight against respiratory infections, support the immune system and even treat mild symptoms of COVID-19. A study conducted by Sheffield University, in conjunction with BetterYou, the pioneering brand behind the UK’s first vitamin D oral spray range, found oral sprays to be just as effective at elevating levels as traditional capsules. The DLux range from BetterYou costs from £6.35 and is available from Holland & Barrett and online at BetterYou.com, amazon.co.uk and ocado.com. Select products from the range are also available at Boots, Superdrug and Waitrose as well as independent high-street health stores.

GET GORGEOUS LOCKS FOR SUMMER 1. Summer should start with a trim - get rid of those split ends and have a fresh haircut. You might need a mid-summer cut as well, as hair grows faster in the summer than in winter time. 2. Protect your hair - apply hair products that contain UV filters, which protect hair from sun damage and wear a hat as much as possible. 3. Drenched hair is key - If your hair is drenched with clean water or leave-in conditioner, it won't absorb much saltwater or pool chemicals. Try also to rinse your hair after a swim. 4. Moisturise it - use a moisturising shampoo and conditioner to bring back the moisture that is lost during sun exposure. It’s also recommended to use a clarifying shampoo once a week to get rid of any chemical residue or product buildup, followed by a deep moisturising treatment. 5. Forget the hot tools - give your hair a break sometimes from using electricals like hair dryers, straighteners and curlers. Your hair can still look amazing by using styling products that will bring out its natural texture. Try also putting your freshly washed hair into a bun or a ponytail before you go to sleep to get beach look waves when you let it loose in the morning. 6. Bye bye frizz - well-maintained hair is less likely to frizz. Try also adding a drop of moisturising oil or anti-frizz serum (use only little at a time) to help you fight the frizz. THE POWER OF ROSE Are you suffering from a recent bereavement or a broken heart? Rose petals taken as a tea or tincture can be very powerful in helping you heal from grief, loss, and heartache. Roses have long been praised for their beauty and valued for strengthening the heart and refreshing the spirit. Short Stories

In the first of our series of short stories, grab a cuppa and settle down to enjoy a quick read…

A First Date by PAULA WRIGHT It was over 35 years ago that Angela threw the party where she first saw Jerry Johnson sitting in the crowed smoky stairway of the house she shared with four other students. She had immediately slowed her descent downstairs and casually insert herself into a conversation with two students she vaguely recognised from one of her lectures. The students were having a heated debate about Marxism that Angela had heard a hundred times before, but she was not listening, focused on gaining the attention of the man a few steps below her. They soon begun to exchange glances and shy smiles, Angela’s trademark flirting technique, before Jerry had extracted himself from the conversation he was in and made his way towards her, setting her heart racing. They had spoken for less than an hour that night, but when he left her house, Angela had known they had plenty of time ahead of them.

grown and intensified over the years. She admitted that her husband spent most of his time at the office, even spending the night, and when he was home, they spoke to each other like polite strangers.

Tonight, Angela stands in front of the floor length mirror in the bedroom that she has shared with Jerry for the past thirty years, her heart thumping loudly and a knot in her stomach. The dress she is wearing is new and expensive. She had paid for it with cash so Jerry would not see the charge on the credit card bill. In the dim lights of the changing room the dress had made her feel daring and sexy, but in the late afternoon sunshine filtering through her bedroom windows the neckline suddenly feels indecently low. Angela pulls the lose skin under her chin taut and sucks in her belly, she holds the pose and admires her reflection before releasing her hand from her chin and relaxing her posture. She sighs. She remembers when she and Jerry first moved into this house and he would slide up behind her when she was doing her makeup at this mirror and kiss her. Angela carefully blots her lipstick and struggles to recall the last time Jerry had even held her hand.

From the bedroom Angela can hear the rapid tapping of Jerry typing in his office down the hallway. She checks her expression in the mirror and practises a casual smile at her reflection before making her way towards her husband’s office. She gives a sharp swift knock before slowly opening the door and popping her head into the room. Her husband sits behind his desk, his fingers poised over the computer keys, his face close to the screen, and a frown of concentration etched across his face.

It was Mia who had told her about the dating app. Mia, who always looked immaculate, from her perfectly accessorized outfits down to her permanently manicured nails, and who confidently and unashamedly shares her sexual exploits in graphic detail. They were sipping white wine outside a bar on the Thames, and Mia had just finished telling Angela about a particularly raucous evening involving a Chilean bartender, when Angela was horrified to find her laughter had transformed into soft sobs, and warm tears were flowing down her cheeks. It was a relief to finally admit aloud how unhappy she was. She told Mia of her loneliness since her sons had moved away, and the distance between her and Jerry that had

40 Life in... Orpington June 2020

They had ordered their third bottle of wine when Mia suggested Angela set up a profile on the app, and they were only halfway through the bottle before Angela agreed. Over the next few weeks Angela’s use of the dating app grew from the casual curiosity of messaging a small handful of men, to a consistent nightly correspondence with just one man. It quickly became her evening ritual to log on to the site as soon as Jerry went to bed. She would wait with giddy anticipation for Tom to come online, her heart pounding when his first message would inevitably appear on the screen.

“I’m off out then, I’ll see you tomorrow”, she says hoping she sounds breezy and unconcerned. “You look nice love, have fun with Mia”, he smiles before turning back to the computer. Angela pauses in the doorway and considers this man behind the desk, this man that she has chosen to spend the past thirty seven years of her life with, her husband. He is still handsome; a full head of dark grey hair, a strong jawline, and clear blue eyes. She watches him continue to work, engrossed in whatever financial conundrum he is solving on the screen in front of him, with no concern whether his wife may be about to embark on an evening with another man. She notices the deep furrow of his brow that indicates a particularly egregious problem that has his mind working overtime, and his forefinger tapping mechanically against the desk as he works through what is perplexing him. As she looks at him, she feels as if she is invisible, an apparition of herself that could dissolve into nothing, and after she disappeared, he would continue to work, and eat, and sleep, unaffected by her presence or absence. She has the urge to scream or throw something at him, but instead she slips lifeinmagazines.co.uk

back through the doorway and gently closes the door. Angela sits in her car outside the restaurant for five minutes, allowing her heartrate to slow. She had been relieved when Tom had suggested this local restaurant, not only because it was one of her favourites but also it was not too far to travel, but now she sees this was a colossal mistake. They should be meeting somewhere dark and far from where she lived, not somewhere she has spent birthdays and anniversaries with her family, and where she risks bumping into the neighbours. She puts the key back in the ignition intending to abandon the date and return home, when she is startled by a gentle tap on the window. She turns to look directly at a man she immediately recognizes as Tom. His face is kind and smiling, although he looks a decade older than the photo on his dating profile. Angela smiles back shyly. Before Angela is fully out of her car Tom extends his hand to her and she reflexively offers her own to shake. She involuntarily, yet visibly, shudders at how moist and clammy his hand is. “It is so lovely to finally meet you”, Tom beams still shaking her hand. Angela smiles again and pulls her hand from his clasp, leaving her hand feeling cold and damp in the cool night air. She politely waits until he turns to walk towards the restaurant before wiping her hand on her coat. As walks ahead of her she is struck by how tall and thin he is. His arms hang long and swinging at his sides, his legs two long sticks striding ahead carrying his narrow torso forwards. In contrast to his lanky physique his head is disproportionately large, like a balloon on a string. They sit at the bar and Angela furtively glances around terrified of seeing someone she knows. She is so distracted she does not notice Tom ordering their drinks and is shocked when two martinis arrive in front of them. “I took the liberty of ordering the lady a drink. Dirty, I assumed?” Tom smirks, winks and takes a large sip of his drink. Angela is taken aback and wonders what she had done to give this man the impression that she is the type of woman who would be amused by this attempt at innuendo. “Well actually I’m driving so a glass of straight vodka probably isn’t wise”, Angela tells him, struggling to remain polite and not mentioning that she despises martini’s and finds it rude and patronising that he would be so presumptuous to order her drink without asking what she preferred. Tom is visibly disappointed, but his expression suddenly brightens. “You can park your car here overnight, I know the manager.” He takes a congratulatory gulp of his cocktail, almost finishing it, “I only live a short walk away”. He holds her gaze for a moment to apparently ensure she has understood his insinuation. Angela’s gut clenches with fury at the audacity of this man, but rather than confront him with her rage she is embarrassed to feel her eyes well up with hot frustrated tears. Tom is completely oblivious to her obvious discomfort and is still rambling about his nearby property, which he apparently bought for ‘a steal’ and has ‘made a mint’ on. He gestures enthusiastically as he explains the fortuitous turn in the property market, and Angela is subjected to regular wafts of his nauseatingly pungent cologne, which only lifeinmagazines.co.uk

lifestyle serves to make her eyes water more. Angela is already standing before she has made the decision, her body apparently ahead of her mind in reacting to her situation. “Please excuse me,” she says to Tom through a forced smile, “Ladies room.” She notes the glimmer of irritation that passes over Tom’s expression before he rectifies himself and smiles. “Don’t be long”, he says laughing but Angela senses the undertone of a command. She considers throwing her martini in his face but decides this is only something the heroine in a romantic film would do, and not an act that she, Angela Johnson, could successfully execute. Instead she walks towards the ladies room and continues out the front door into her car and drives home. In the safety of her kitchen Angela beelines to the fridge to get a bottle of wine and pour herself a necessary glass but pauses noticing a note attached to the front of the fridge with a magnet. Ang, I made enough pasta for two as I know the portions at Chapter One are small and thought you would be hungry. J. As she is reading the note, she hears a familiar voice behind her. “You’re home”, Jerry says simply. He is standing in the doorway of the kitchen and seems uncertain whether to stay or leave. Angela turns to face her husband and it feels like she has not seen him in months. His hair is disheveled from running his hands through it as he worked, and she notices it has got long around his ears and he needs a haircut. His t-shirt is tight over the bump of his belly and she remembers how it feels to rub her hand on his tummy and tease him. She looks into his eyes, which she has seen red and wretched but never seen cry, and for a moment they say nothing. “I…” she starts to speak but is stopped by her own tears. Jerry is instantly in front of her and pulls her into his arms. She allows herself to fold into him, her head falling onto his chest, and breathes him in, his scent so familiar and comforting. She feels his hand on the back of her neck, his thumb gently stroking her skin soothingly while he holds her tightly. Eventually they pull apart and Angela dries her eyes. They turn out the lights of the house and climb into their bed. They do not talk that night, but Angela falls asleep and is not concerned, she knows they have plenty of time ahead of them. A Final Thought…

The importance of mindset in business success by Gareth Welsh, Clearview Window Cleaning Specialists I spent seven years in the military, in Iraq and Northern Ireland combat zones. It was a life changing experience which shaped my perspective and attitude on life. When I left the army, I felt lost and suffered from severe PTSD. The army had been my family for so long. I was uncertain which direction my life would go in. However, I was determined not to throw in the towel. I realised that if I applied my military experience and diligence to my new civilian life, I could achieve anything I wanted. I needed to get started as an entrepreneur and I applied for a business startup loan with the Royal British Legion, securing enough funds to buy the equipment I needed to get started. In early 2019 I set up my own business, Clearview Window Cleaning Specialists. Building up my company has taught me the following valuable business lessons:

Channel your life experience I realised that my military experience was a massive asset to my start-up success. I applied the same discipline and structure I had learnt in the army to my business. I told myself that if I could work in a war zone and overcome PTSD, I could most certainly run my own business! I recommend everyone to look closely at their own life experiences to see how they can channel these into becoming a better, more motivated business person.

Have a work motto I have a very clear work motto - Honour, Courage, and Commitment. Honour to me means being proud and honest and showing everyone equal respect. Courage refers to the ability to control my fears in difficult situations and times of uncertainty. Commitment is a promise I make myself every day to do what I love and work at it until I succeed. Every morning, I wake up and remind myself of my motto. It has really helped me set

my intentions and mindset for every day I’ve worked.

Feel the fear & do it anyway Setting up my own business with no safety net has been incredibly scary. However, I’ve felt the fear and done it anyway. Rewards don’t come without risks or hard work. I remind myself daily that failure is a learning process which leads us to a better outcome. If you trust yourself and the process, the rewards will be worth it in the end. Hard work pays off.

Don’t be afraid to ask for help No one is successful by themselves. Community is key to business growth. I’ve been very lucky to have the support of the Royal British Legion. I’ve also received support from my local BNI Spitfires chapter which has provided me with invaluable business insights and inspiration. Of course, there are also my clients, who on a daily basis remind me how rewarding my job is. I absolutely love window cleaning. Find your people, ask for help. Finding the courage to show vulnerability will pay off.

Have a positive mindset and believe in yourself. Success will follow! Gareth Welsh runs Clearview Window Cleaning Specialists. He offers all aspects of window cleaning and uses only purified water for cleaning. He services the Bromley borough, Kent and surroundings areas.

thank you “I love 'Life in Orpington' and always pick up spare copies from the train station to give to friends. It has very interesting and pertinent information and articles - from top tips to police advice to community news to council and transport updates. I like the 'Getting to know Orpington' section as I'm interested in local history. I also read the 'What's on' pages to keep up to date. I think there's a good balance of news and adverts, and it's interesting to hear how well local businesses are doing.”

Sylvia Chubbs

“Just picked up my copy of @LifeInMags – great read! Lots of useful tips and advice, along with loads of info on things to do.”

Jane Barnes

“You both do an amazing job! A team of two that do design, copywriting and production of a full magazine with advertising. Hats off to you and please keep going and creating great content - you are an inspiration! I think you have really helped everyone know so much more about the local area and promote it in such a good way! WELL DONE, you should both be very very proud!!”

Neilio Ferguson

“I love the magazine and learning more about the community and what’s on my doorstep. I particularly love hearing about businesses in the area and what they offer as I always like to support local trade. Searching and buying online is convenient, but nothing beats knowing a shop owner, saying hi and supporting them..”

K Valaydon, Petts Wood

“I really enjoy reading the magazine. It is a great to get a feel for all that is going on in the area. As a relative newcomer to Orpington having been here about 18 months, it really helps to get to know what is making Orpington tick each month and learn about the history of the area. ”

Jennifer Shelden

“You're both doing a stellar job in breathing life back into the high street and bringing recognition to those who work hard and are too modest to seek it for themselves.”

Aaron Doe

“I picked up your fantastic Life in...Orpington magazine at Petts Wood library today and it's been great to read through this evening. My daughter is almost one and I'm always on the hunt for things for us to do together. Congratulations on a much needed magazine! It's brilliant.”

“Just a note to say what a great read ‘Life in Orpington’ is. I must confess to not having seen all previous copies but have now subscribed to the ‘e’ version to ensure I don’t miss any future editions. Even the advertisements are interesting and must have been created by talented persons. Congratulations to you, Nicky, and all who contribute to this truly refreshing publication. It really deserves to go from strength to strength as I’m sure it will.”

Derek Marrable

“What you have both done is quite remarkable! In a busy market, you have produced a quality, engaging, community magazine. Great journalism and great design has meant it is one of the most sought out magazines locally. ”

Chandra Sharma, Tangent Workwear (advertiser)

“Nicky and Lauretta have been most wonderful to work with, they are both truly invigorating, inspiring and intuitive. With so much going on in the world of marketing and social media, Life In Orpington Magazine has added an exiting twist to the mix, whilst keeping the content local and vibrant. The advertisements are carefully controlled to allow for an even distribution of content vs promotions. We’ve seen a good response from a wide range of local representatives that have engaged with the magazine. We certainly look forward to this continuing and growing further to serve our Bromley borough.”
