Sometimes when we’re telling people about 'Life In Orpington', they'll joke and ask "Is there life in Orpington?!" And we'll always respond with the same answer: "You'd be surprised!"

Community News

Before we started our new publishing venture we thought we'd struggle to come up with things to include in the magazine – how wrong we were! Take last month for example - even on the day we were going to press we received three phone calls asking us to include information – it was certainly a challenge squeezing it all in and meeting the print deadline.

GettingOrpington to know The two orphanages of St Anne and St Joseph were built in 1893 by the Early 1900s - Orpington RC Archdiocese of Southwark on a 60-acre estate of land they bought in 1891 to the west of Orpington, on the boundaries of Farnborough and Green St Green. The orphanages were much needed to house and educate orphans and homeless children from south east London. The orphanages flourished and there were often 400 people (children and staff) living at these premises in the early 20th century, with older children leaving for new lives and younger children arriving. In 1909 the original Holy Innocents Chapel was built within the grounds of the orphanage. The complex was almost self-supporting with a small farm and land to live off. You can see this in the aerial image above which shows Sevenoaks Road and the railway tunnel in the top right hand corner.

St Joseph's Orphan

Early 1900s - St Anne's Orphanage

Many children would go on to emigrate across the Empire (as was) – mainly Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Rhodesia and other countries with organisations associated with the Roman Catholic church.

New developments In 1954 St Joseph’s Orphanage became St Joseph’s Secondary School, where it continued until it was demolished in the early 1980s. St Anne’s became St Anne’s Primary School, also in 1954 and with some modern buildings is now Holy Innocents Catholic Primary School. Full redevelopment of the estate came eph's Orphanage Early 1900s St Jos when it was found a number of buildings including the chapel were suffering from serious subsidence in the late 1970s. By the early 1980s a new chapel and housing estate was built. What was left of the orphanages had already moved to more modern buildings 120 boys and 150 nearer to Sevenoaks Road. Demand for them was gradually girls resided at the reduced and in turn those buildings were sold and redeveloped in orphanages in the the 1990s. Very little remains of the early 1900 buildings although early 1900s the ‘lodge’ house on Sevenoaks Road is still in place.

Did you know?

A short story of fate A young orphan boy grew up at St Josephs and when he was ready to leave Early 1900s St Anne's Orphanage he moved to a new and exciting life in Canada. That boy, now a man, joined the Canadian army and was sent to the western front in the – First World War. You can imagine his surprise when injured and shipped back to Kent he found himself in the Canadian hospital at Orpington, looking out across the valley at the orphanage that he grew up in. A popular version of this story tells that he was in and out of consciousness on the way back from Folkestone and was only aware that he was going to the ‘16th Ontario Military Hospital’ and didn't realise where it was. It is also told that he woke up in the morning and was amazed at where he has somehow ended up! The soldier made a good recovery and spent time when he was convalescing with the staff from the Orphanage who knew him well. Whether some CCYY - Orpington - St Joseph's Orphanage of the story is ‘hearsay’ and is correct is not clear, but the story as a whole is true and one that we like to tell. WATCH NOTICEBOARD Community News - CHARITY

Raising Awareness…. Do you accept donations? Name of charity: The Maypole Project.

Location:

We have two offices, one is in Greenwich and the other is in Green St Green, Orpington which is our head office.

What service do you provide:

We support children with complex medical needs by creating a ‘lifeline’ for them, their siblings and their whole family. We provide emotional and social support from the moment of their awareness of their child or young person’s condition, sometimes this is sadly through and following the death of a child. Our promise to families is that we will stay alongside them, as long as we are needed. Our services, which include a range of therapies, regular activities and outings, will be tailored to their individual needs. For more information about the services and the whole project, please take a look at our website www.themaypoleproject.co.uk.

Who is it available to?

We do have criteria as to who we are able to support but this will be analysed on a case by case basis. We ask that anyone who would like our support please do call in and self refer and then we can send one of our support team out to assess you and let you know the different ways in which we can help.

How are you funded?

We receive no government funding so we completely rely on the generosity of our community. Every year we need to raise over £250,000 in order to continue supporting our families, which is a big challenge so we really do appreciate any support we receive.

We often need items for our events including refreshments, sweets etc. Vouchers are also great for raffle prizes but most of all we do really need people to fundraise for us!

Do you run any events?

We have a range of events throughout the year including our annual Ball, Carol Concert and places in various challenge events incluing Royal Parks Half Marathon, London to Brighton Cycle and Brighton Marathon. If you are interested in finding out about any of these events then please check out our website.

Are you looking for volunteers?

We are always in need of volunteers so if there is anything you are interested in doing then please get in touch with us by calling 01689 851596.

How else can people help?

The main thing we ask people to do is to share the work of The Maypole Project and fundraise for us! Whether it be recommending us a charity of the year partner, holding an event for us, asking your school to fundraise for us or taking part in an event. There is lots of information on our website about the many ways in which you can support us.

Contact details:

For more information about us please check out our website www.themaypoleproject.co.uk or call

June is #SmallCharitiesWeek and as a small local charity we are keen to promote the work we do. Please do follow us on social media (Twitter- @MaypoleProject/ Facebook- TheMaypoleProject) and share anything you see on our pages.

To mark its extended evening opening hours and new supper menu, the Orpington Café and Record Store hosted a launch party. The popular venue, located in Orpington High Street, is now open in the evenings from Tuesday through to Saturday from 5pm, with Happy Hour running from 5pm-7pm. We were lucky enough to join in the celebrations with Scott (pictured) and his team.

Jo Johnson MP officially marked the opening of The DenCare Clinic & Travel Vaccinations in Locksbottom last month.

The event was highlighted with Jo in the dental chair after a ribbon-cutting ceremony and some community-related discussions with local patients. It was a hugely successful event at the recently renovated clinic, which offers a broad range of dental and cosmetic treatments. The clinic is currently running a £500 discount offer at its ‘Invisalign® Smile Day’ on Saturday 22nd June.

Local Heroes... 5 Minutes With...

Mary Spinks

Nominated by Life In Orpington's editor Lauretta Mary Spinks founded The Primrose Centre in 2003. The centre itself was originally the hospital chapel to the old Farnborough Hospital, but after extensive refurbishment is now an oasis of calm that provides support to those with breast cancer. What’s your background in community and charity work and how did you become involved in The Primrose Centre? My background is not medical but I have always had an interest in the part medical charities play in improving life for those in need. My first involvement was with Kings College Voluntary Research Trust. I was appointed as a trustee to the Asthma Research Council at a time when the council did not have a fundraiser and went on to organise the Starlight Ball for six years, co chair a royal charity premier and a dinner at the Mansion House for sixty years of the council. Moving on to specifically funding the Asthma and Allergy Research Centre at Guys was a very exciting time, with funding of over a million pounds achieved, the centre continues to do some amazing work to find a cure for asthma. The idea to create a breast cancer charity was from my wish to do something near home and, with the encouragement of our GP Dr Abdol Tavabie, it was achieved after much work!

What’s the most rewarding thing about your job?

Talk Therapy. We also hold coffee mornings for people to meet and support each other.

What does a typical day look like for you?

It is truly rewarding seeing visitors make progress through their treatment and how much they enjoy the therapies on offer. For many the coffee mornings they attend are a huge source of support. My role at the centre is a great privilege.

A great deal of my time is spent engaging with others involved in breast cancer care and talking through with visitors how we can support them, whilst also checking up how they are progressing in their treatment when they come for therapy.

How can people help or get involved?

It’s very varied and every day is different. Some days time is spent raising awareness of what the charity does and making plans for our next fundraiser - the most important thing is being there to help everyone who comes to the centre.

Charitable donations and grants are our sole source of funding, so fundraising is an important part of what we do. We run a number of events throughout the year and people can help through donations, organising their own fundraising events or volunteering their time.

The Primrose Centre is a registered charity, located at 3 Prudence Lane, Farnborough, BR6 8RE. It is open on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 10am-4pm.

As Chief Executive I have the support of three amazing trustees who all work to make the centre the wonderful place it is. I work three days a week and being here for others who need our support is so lovely.

What exactly does The Primrose Centre offer?

For more information call 01689 880218, email info@primrosecentre.org.uk or see www.primrosecentre.org.uk

The centre opened in November 2010 and provides support to those diagnosed with breast cancer. What is really important is the centre exists to help those with breast cancer, to support them through their medical treatment elsewhere. This is done by providing free sessions for users – from Reflexology, Reiki and Indian Head Massage, to Lymphodema Drainage, Mindfulness, Nutrition and

I wanted to support good causes that help people from both ends of the age spectrum. Firstly, I have chosen the Latch Project which is devoted to helping and housing young, hidden homeless people aged 18 and over in the spare rooms of local homeowners in the Borough. The Brains Behind the Business

The Orpington Café and Record Store opened in November and has gone from strength to strength since its launch. The venue is open seven days a week and offers a full breakfast, lunch and supper menu. It is also fully licensed and features a lounge area for those wanting to relax with drinks surrounded by great music. We spent some time with owner, Scott Buckle, the brains behind the business, to find out more about what’s cooking… What makes the Orpington Café & Record Store unique? We offer a menu that is unique to us with a range of classic dishes, but also our own creations. We’re also proud to home cook our menu on site and focus on high quality ingredients and exceptional presentation to really wow our guests. In addition, we aim to provide a service that is above and beyond what our guests would expect; relaxed and informal but attentive and efficient - we aim to know our regulars by name. Finally, I’ve always had a passion for music and vinyl, and with the current revival of vinyl it seemed an ideal way to address a missing retail need in the local area. The records really do add to the guest experience and the feedback we have had on this has been very positive. What’s your background in the hospitality industry? My career in retail, premium food, beverage and hospitality began working with Antonio Carluccio at the age of 21 during the early stages of the expansion of the Carluccio’s brand. I worked for Bill’s Restaurants from 2006 through to 2017, leading the operations and developing the concept from its family business origins of two sites to a UK wide recognised brand of 82 restaurants. I was the brand’s first appointed General Manager, Operations Manager, Regional Head of Operations and Regional Operations Director. I achieved the knowledge and capability of store merchandising directly from the founder, Bill Collison, delivering industry leading visuals and guest spaces throughout the rollout of Bill’s. This led to winning a local Store Design and Environment of the Year award for the first Bill’s branded restaurant. We achieved entry into The Good Food Guide with a 3* rating. All this experience has been instrumental in creating the Orpington. What makes the Orpington special? My team. I have the most amazing team who are passionate about looking after our guests, each other and the local community. I’m immensely proud of them. Why did you choose to open a café & record store in Orpington? When I was looking for somewhere to open a café and record store, Orpington seemed an ideal choice; lots going on, a community feeling and a bustling high street, just like it should be. I wanted to bring something new to Orpington that would complement the many amazing local businesses. I felt a sense of community spirit that I wanted to be part of. What’s your favourite dish on the menu? Our pork and beef meatballs in a rich tomato sauce with

14 Life in... Orpington June 2019

big tubes of rigatoni pasta. We use a smoked mozzarella cheese grilled over the meatballs which is delicious. Finished off with a banoffee pie with espresso for pouring! What feedback have you received since opening? We’ve been so overwhelmed with loads of positive and supportive feedback from our guests and the local business community. They frequently comment on the quality of the home cooked food we serve & the warm and cosy environment. We do receive constructive feedback with suggestions on what our guests would like to see us do in the future which we’re really pleased and thankful to receive. What are your musical tastes? I love soul music, plenty of vocals, preferably female locals with lots of welly behind it! What’s the first album you ever bought? Whitney by Whitney Houston. My mum introduced me to her at the age of eight. I had a narrow escape from my first purchase being a Shakin’ Stevens record. My mum guided me well, it began a life long passion for all things Whitney. What’s your guilty pleasure - music-wise and food-wise? Right Said Fred / Cheese too late at night. What are you most proud of in your new business venture? The relationships I and my team have with our regular guests. What makes the perfect cup of coffee? Training and a massive passion for great coffee. Along with outstanding coffee beans and a top quality milk. Where did you get your inspiration for the interior of the Orpington? A real mix of my career with Bill’s and travelling the world with key influences from Australia and New Zealand. Can you tell us about ’the Buff’ - what it is and what you offer? The Buff is a private guest room that seats up to ten guests. We can offer the room with no hire charge for a range of uses from business meetings through to celebrations, private lunches or evening meals. It’s totally enclosed and has a smart screen for those wanting to use it for business purposes. For occasions that are more relaxed like birthdays or social get-togethers, our guests can plug in their own music that is exclusively heard only in The Buff. lifeinmagazines.co.uk

It will go a long way for your credibility.

Trend report: Flexible workspace

Small and medium sized companies in the UK are divided when it comes to allowing their employees to work from home, according to research by Close Brothers Business Barometer. Over half of SMEs (55%) said that they had a flexible working policy that enabled employees to work from home. However, two fifths (42%) said that they did not, with the remaining 3% unsure. Companies that offer flexible working options felt that increased efficiency was a key benefit, with nearly 70% saying that they believed it improves staff wellbeing and productivity.

THE SMALLEST BUSINESSES, EMPLOYING FEWER THAN TEN PEOPLE, ARE 10% LESS LIKELY TO ALLOW STAFF TO WORK FROM HOME. 20 Life in... Orpington June 2019

Health & Beauty 7 ways to beat the bloat... Experiencing some bloating, gas or belching is natural and common. However, when it comes to a stage where it starts interfering with your daily activities or your feelings of wellbeing, it’s an issue that needs sorting. Here’s seven easy tips from registered nutritionist, Sophie Thurner. 1. Avoid swallowing air: there are 2 sources of gas in

the gut; the first being gas produced by bacteria and the second is air swallowed during eating or drinking. Cut down on carbonated drinks and chewing gum.

2. Chew your food properly: most of us chew each bite

only five to eight times. Chewing more thoroughly reduces the amount of air you swallow with your food, which is one of the major causes of bloating.

3. Eat smaller meals: eating too much at once can make

you feel stuffed, which is often confused with feeling bloated. Try eating until you’re 80% full and then wait 20 minutes until you reach for more.

In 2020 a new organ donor law comes into effect in England. Support for donation will be assumed unless people opt out.

4. Slow down: slow down by taking smaller bites,

chewing more thoroughly and taking breaks between bites allows your brain to receive fullness signals before you overeat. Try eating with your non-dominant hand as you won’t be able to eat as quickly!

5. Eat more mindfully: most of us wolf down our meals

while catching up on emails, scrolling through social media or watching the television. Be more mindful when eating and don’t do any other tasks.

6. Rule out food allergies, intolerances and sensitivities: bloating can be caused by gas from

mal-absorbed nutrients. Lactose, fructose, eggs, peanuts, seafood, gluten, yeast and soy are common food items people can be sensitive/intolerant or allergic to.

7. Make sure you’re not constipated: the bloated

Trend alert

Consumers are becoming increasingly concerned about the potential side-effects of artificial substances often used in skincare products, such as petrochemicals, toxins and parabens. Euromonitor predicts that there’ll be a growing trend in consumers seeking a ‘greener approach’ when choosing products that are both kinder to the environment and to their skin.

TOP TIPS FOR MALE STYLING Lloyd Hughes, multi salon owner and creative director of male grooming brand men-ü, offers his top tips on how men can keep their hair healthy and face fresh: “Heat exacerbates oil on the skin that can lead to breakouts, so make sure you carry a product that can keep shine at bay throughout the day in your bag. Use a toner with kaolin clay, witch hazel and or zinc oxide. These are great ingredients for removing excess oil, dead skin cells, impurities and blockages and will leave skin clean, dry, smooth and firm.”

"Did you know that having a facial has huge health benefits? It reduces stress and promotes blood circulation” says Iona at Indulgence In Beauty.

Skin Republic’s Mud Sheet Masks are available in selected Superdrug stores for £7.99. They combine the convenience of a sheet mask with the cleaning properties of a mud mask. Life In Orpington's editor Nicky tried the Pink Clay, which is rich in antioxidants Goji Berries and White Mulberries to help fight against free radicals which cause premature ageing. She says "It was easy to apply and after just 10 minutes I could feel the mask starting to dry and tighten. Afterwards my skin felt very soft, firm and brighter, my skintone had a more even look to it and my pores were tighter." See skin-republic-uk.myshopify.com for details.

lifestyle June is

National Osteoporosis Month According to nhs.uk, Osteoporosis affects more than three million people in the UK. It’s a condition that weakens bones, making them fragile and therefore more likely to break. The condition develops slowly over several years and is usually only diagnosed when a minor fall or sudden impact causes a bone fracture.

Prevention Diet plays a crucial part in lessening your chances of developing osteoporosis. A diet rich in calcium and vitamin D will go a long way to helping. So eat foods such as salmon, baked beans, broccoli, kale, tofu, cheese, yoghurt, eggs and milk for calcium and tuna, mackerel, salmon, cereals and egg yolks for vitamin D.

Home & Garden HOUSE & GARDEN FESTIVAL

Olympia London is hosting a House & Garden Festival from 19th-23rd June. Bringing together three individual events - The Art & Antiques Fair Olympia, HOUSE & GROW and Spirit of Summer - they all present complementary collections offering inspiration and choice to create timeless versatile living spaces to suit all styles, as well as summer shopping. See https://olympia.london for details.

Clear the clutter!

1. Set aside some time to tackle a drawer, a cabinet or a room at a time & ask not to be disturbed 2. Make three piles - keep, donate and throw, and as you pick up each item focus on one thing at a time 3. With items that don't offer memories or sentimental value ask yourself if they offer a purpose or pleasure. If not - donate them 4. If you're dealing with makeup or lotions/potions be aware that everything has an expiry date 5. For future reference, try to buy things you need rather than things you just want 6. Clear as you go - it will make future clear outs much less daunting 7. Learn to minimilise your life and your belongings. You'll be surprised at how little you actually need 28 Life in... Orpington June 2019

Tips for displaying collections • Group items/ornaments in threes, but you can get away with displaying more if hanging photo frames • Try to match your items to your colour scheme or go for contrasting colours • Discard duplicate items – always go for one of a kind and scour places like boot sales for interesting items that will spark conversation • Use sites like Pinterest to get some inspiration on layouts and display ideas • If displaying in a cabinet, consider upcycling the cabinet to match your room colour or theme

6 GARDEN JOBS FOR JUNE June is the longest month and with the additional daylight and warmth there are some things that you can be doing to make sure your outdoor space looks as good as possible: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6.

Mow your lawn as regularly as possible- preferably once a week. The warmth means that your lawn is actively growing so think of over- seeding sparse patches, getting rid of moss and feeding. In tandem with flower beds coming into their own so are the weeds. Make sure to dust off your hoe and weed regularly especially when it’s dry. June can be a very hot month so look for evidence that any plants or flowers in greenhouses are overheating. If that is the case you can help prevent scorch by making sure that plants are well ventilated and shaded. Many perennials in your borders may put on so much growth at this time of year that they are liable to collapse under their own weight, especially with heavy rainfall. Staking tall plants early in the season should help protect against this. Be smart when watering. As it can be very hot in the middle part of the day, water your garden early in the morning or the cool of the evening. This should help reduce evaporation. Hanging baskets add a splash of colour and by now you are well clear of the risk of frost. Watch out for baskets drying out so unless the soil is moist water every day. lifeinmagazines.co.uk

HOW TO CHOOSE THE RIGHT MATTRESS by the experts at The Bed Post

Your bed/mattress is arguably the most important household item you will buy. After all it’s the thing you use for the most hours each day and in which you will spend up to a third of your life! Here are a few tips when you are trying out models in the showroom: • Take off your coat before you try the models unless of course that’s what you usually sleep in! • Allow plenty of time and lie on the beds exactly how you would when climbing into bed at the end of the day, on your back, side or front or all three. The visco elastic “Memory” foam upholstery, for example, works on body temperature and takes a few minutes for the foam to ‘mould’ to your body. • Think about the size you need. A standard double bed is 135cm wide (4’6” in old money) and 190cm long (6’3”). A King Size is 150cm wide (5’) and 200cm long (6’6”). Divan beds are much higher than in years past due to increased storage requirements. The display beds may look grand in the showroom but could become a monster in your bedroom! Don’t forget it will need to go up your stairs to get into your bedroom too! • Pocket sprung mattresses have for many years been considered to offer the best quality for comfort and support. The independent nature of the springs generally offers a more individual and personal support. Look at the number of individual springs AND their quality, as well as the quality of upholstery overlaid over the springs. Better quality mattresses offer the choice of natural upholstery such as cotton, lambswool and cashmere, or natural latex or visco elastic foams. Many mattresses are now available in a ‘Gentle’, ‘Medium’ or ‘Firm’ spring options to tailor the support to your requirements. • Consider the base options. Divan bases have evolved hugely, offering far more choice in colour, fabric and style. Would you prefer traditional pull out storage drawers or the lift up ottoman style - either from the end or the side? All of these options are now available with matching headboards in a choice of styles. Maybe a bedstead is more your thing, perhaps wooden, metal, leather or upholstered?

SAFE HOLIDAY BOOKING TIPS

EXIT FESTIVAL: 4th-7th July Novi Sad, Serbia

Following this month’s travel tip from Irene at Go Travel, here are some other safe holiday booking tips from AllClear Travel Insurance that you should consider putting in place to ensure a seamless getaway…

1.) Check your travel insurance offers End Supplier Failure.

This covers you when you have purchased your holiday through independent travel, accommodation and car hire providers as opposed to booking a package through a holiday company.

2.) Check your travel company is ABTA (Association of British Travel Agents) or ATOL (Air Travel Organiser’s Licence) bonded.

ABTA provides a code of conduct that all travel companies are obliged to follow, aiming to maintain the high standards that allow customers to travel with confidence. The ATOL scheme protects customers if a company with an ATOL licence ceases trading, by ensuring customers are not stranded abroad and do not lose money.

3.) Consider whether single or annual travel insurance cover suits you better.

Single trip cancellation cover starts from the day you take out insurance, and in some insurers’ policies this can be up to a full year before you go, so it is worth purchasing your policy as soon as your trip is booked.

Cyber affair

The amount of time that people spend on their mobile phones is affecting relationships according to a report by law firm Stephensons. This is leading to doubt and suspicion among marriages and relationships. Over half (57%) of millennials in a relationship feel like their partners are distracted by their mobile phones and this number drops to just under a quarter (24%) of marriages. More distressing perhaps is the fact that 11% of millennials have either been unfaithful or had their partner be unfaithful through mobile phone technology. Individuals who spend too much time on their screens at the expense of their relationships are called ‘phoneaholics’ and is leading to more and more couples being unhappy.

Signs your partner is having a cyber affair • Is your partner distracted during conversations and unable to look away from his/her mobile phone screen? • Does your partner take the phone with him/her to the loo? • Has he/she suddenly started wearing a new perfume or aftershave? • Does your partner check his/her phone as soon as a message pings? • Has your partner changed his/her passwords on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram? • Has he/she become emotionally distant? • Are his/her whereabouts sometimes unclear? 32 Life in... UK consumers ditch more than a million tonnes of clothing every year. The throwing away of clothing is one of the biggest contributions we make to landfills today. The average lifetime of a garment in the UK only lasting an average of 2.2 years before it is discarded. We shop constantly, and always want more new stuff, creating a culture of disposable, low-quality clothes. But that is disastrous for our planet.

Fast fashion The way we get dressed now has virtually nothing in common with the behaviour of previous generations, who would wear a garment for decades. Fast fashion is designed to be replaced quickly, the clothing is cheap and literally falls apart, ending up in landfills.

end up in landfill. Ask yourself how many times you will wear that item of clothing you're thinking of buying. It is important that we appreciate our clothes and give value to them.

How do I find quality clothing? Take some time to learn what quality looks and feels like. Check the garment’s fabric content matters. Fabrics can be made cheaply if they use low-grade fibres, which typically aren’t very strong, or if there isn’t a lot of fibre in the cloth. The more fibre there is, the more likely it’s going to last longer. Look for density, a fabric doesn’t necessarily need to be heavy to be good. Life hacks If you’re going to smile, a genuine smile is the way to go. You can try and fake it, but people will know it’s not real. People naturally smile with their eyes, so if you’re going for a winning smile and can’t smile naturally, try to crinkle your eyes ever so slightly.

Natural lighting is key – and outdoors is best. Always face towards the light so your face is illuminated (don’t stand with the sun behind you). If you’re indoors avoid harsh lighting like fluorescent lights or dim lighting, which will make the photo appear dark

Take your selfie from slightly above your head – this will avoid the dreaded double chin as you’ll be looking up slightly. You can put your phone on a self-timer so that you don’t have to worry about pressing the button when you’ve got your shot lined up.

lifestyle AFFORDABLE CAR INSURANCE: HOW TO GET IT...

1. Adding a second experienced driver to the policy can save £££. Make sure they have a clean licence and preferably a no-claims history. This works really well for teenagers who have just passed their test - adding mum or dad to the policy will help massively. 2. If you’re retired or a full time parent, tick the box that says this rather than ‘unemployed’. 3. Get quotes in early. Research from MoneySavingExpert found that the key date is 21 days before renewal. 5. Always use comparison sites to ensure that you are getting the best deal and don’t let your insurance automatically renew. Ask if your current provider will match online quotes. 6. Use cashback sites to see how much they offer on different providers. 7. Cut back on extras such as breakdown cover, courtesy car, windscreen damage, car theft etc 8. If you can, pay upfront and in one go rather than spreading payments as many insurers charge interest. 9. Insurers usually offer lower premiums to those who keep their car in a garage – it’s less likely to be stolen or damaged by severe weather or vandals. 10. Consider signing up for black box insurance. It’s where a small device (fitted to your car) records speed, distance travelled, hours of use and driving style. You can log on to a website to monitor how you’re performing in each category and help reduce the cost of your insurance.

A Final Thought…

Cycling in Orpington by TONY AYDINER

Spring has sprung and if you’ve considered cycling as a hobby, there’s no better time to start. The popularity of cycling in the UK has grown massively over the last few years. So much so, that now more than four million of us across the country cycle on a regular basis. With people like Chris Hoy, Bradley Wiggins, Chris Froome, Mark Cavendish and Geraint Thomas becoming household names, the popularity of cycling shows no signs of abating. But cycling has also proved pragmatic in the days of austerity, providing a cheaper way to get fit than paying exorbitant gym fees, and is also a cheaper way to commute to work. The roads are now filled with cyclists and many motorists curse us cyclists for clogging up the road. But if those cyclists weren’t commuting into work on their bikes, then they’d be using their cars and causing even more congestion. My own journey into cycling began in 2007 when I was a slightly overweight 34-year-old sales manager working in Croydon. I received a company-wide email that caught my eye, offering employees the opportunity to take part in a charity bike ride from Glasgow to London; an average of 100 miles per day over five days. I had enjoyed cycling to college as an 18 year old and here I could get fit and also have two extra days annual leave. Cycling to work in Croydon was my training- but that was it. It was youth and determination that saw me through the gruelling ride. I did it again in 2008, this time going from Belfast to London. I massively enjoyed these two stints of charity cycling, and not just the fitness gains and accomplishment, but more the sense of freedom that cycling brings. However, a promotion at work and a new found interest in British Military Fitness saw me effectively

down the bike for almost ten years, save for the odd ride here and there. In 2017 a serious knee injury meant no more road-running. I decided to buy a new bike and get back at it at the grand age of 43. A friend suggested that I went along to his local cycling club. I was reluctant because I’d always ridden alone and enjoyed the thinking time on the bike. But when I arrived at Beckenham Rugby Cyclists (BRC), David Fearne made me feel incredibly welcome. There was only one other guy there that evening, and so the three of us set off together for a ride. Despite being much younger than my two co-riders, what was lung-burning agony that night looked like a casual ride for them. It was the patience and kindness of David on that day which made me want to return the next week to BRC, and which has seen me return most weeks since. If you’ve ever considered cycling as a hobby, I would absolutely urge you to join one of the many local cycling clubs in and around Orpington because of the many benefits that cycling in a group gives you over cycling alone. • It’s safer: lone cyclists are more vulnerable to being involved in accidents. Motorists are much more aware and careful around groups than individuals. • You’ll make new friends, plus the camaraderie and motivation that cycling in a group gives you is worth its weight in gold. • You’ll discover new routes and see places you haven’t seen before. Riding in groups exposes you to new scenery and adventures. • You’ll pick up tips, get discounted bike kits and be exposed to a wealth of knowledge. The best thing about cycling clubs is that they cater for all ages and abilities. What was seen as a predominately male sport particularly for middle-aged men, is now very much mixed, with women being the fastest growing group in cycling. There are also many amazing events to enter each year such as the iconic Ride London event each summer. As for cycling clubs in and around the area, we are spoilt for choice in Orpington. The brilliant thing about Orpington is just how close we are to some amazing cycle routes going out towards the North Downs etc. Three of the best clubs in the area are GS Avanti (www.gsavanti.co.uk), Bigfoot CC (www.bigfootcc.co.uk) and Beckenham Rugby Cyclists (www.beckenhamrugbycyclists.co.uk)
