The Orpington Car The first part of the 20th Century saw the production of motor cars and other vehicles, powered by the internal combustion engine, soar in all countries that had advanced technologically. The big names from America and the European Continent may have led the ‘pack’ but lots of engineering companies in many towns and cities popped up across the UK producing all manner of vehicles.
1912 - High Street - Smith and Milroys Garage
In the late 1910s and early 1920s, Orpington and St Mary Cray were competing as the commercial centre points in the district. From this, technological advances meant that The Orpington Car came to fruition. The Orpington Car and lesser known van were built by Frank Smith and Jack Milroy, firstly at their works in Wellington Road and then at a bigger works they built opposite the priory pond at the very end of Orpington High Street as seen by these two images.

technology.
Not many artefacts survive and certainly we are unaware of any examples of the car still in existence. The only known survivor once appeared in the 1970's television series Crossroads. In addition to the images of the vehicles we show here, we also have some literature and advertising from the 1920 Motor Show at Olympia from the ‘Auto Car’ magazine at the time. The Orpington Car was shown at many car shows in the period. The car was briefly successful and was built over approximately 5 years with the last car being built in 1925. Smith and Milroy continued to be a stalwart engineering business and would go on to service and sell the motor vehicles that did succeed their own car well into the 20th century.

We were delighted to see that the newsletter of the Crofton Residents Association had mentioned us on the cover of the June issue citing
“Of all the free commercial publications that we receive, we are most impressed by the very new “Life In Orpington” magazine… if you normally throw such papers aside to read later (and then never do), please have a look at this new one. It is not just all adverts… there is a very good mix if useful articles, tips, things to do, places to go. They are addressing their readers as human beings with families and feelings. It seems to be a good complement for our very own CRA Newsletter” Thanks very much CRA - we really appreciate your positive, encouraging words! July 2019 Life in... Orpington 11

Local Heroes... 5 Minutes With...
Peter Hibble
Nominated by Aaron Doe, Orpington PDSA Manager Aaron says: “At a sprightly 70 years of age, Peter had worked as a local postman prior to retirement, but it is his retirement which has spurred him on to greater things. Since then he has been an active member of the local British Legion where in this capacity he can been seen in the lead-up to Remembrance Sunday collecting donations and selling poppies in the Walnuts Centre. He has also collected for the RNLI and collected and volunteered for the Orpington branch of Marie Curie until its closure at the end of 2017. Since then he has volunteered at the PDSA in Orpington where he has become a trusted, well thought of and integral part of my staff." Hey Peter! How did you become involved in working for the PDSA? I started volunteering at Marie Curie because both my sister-in-law and a close friend had cancer and I wanted to give something back to the community for them. Unfortunately, Marie Curie had to give up the lease and the manager, Colleen, started working at the PDSA and convinced me to join her. I’ve been here ever since working on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.
What exactly does the PDSA offer? The PDSA stands for the People’s Dispensary for Sick Animals and is the UK’s leading veterinary charity. It provides low cost and free veterinary care to the sick and injured pets of people in need and promotes responsible pet ownership.
What does a typical day look like for you? When I come in, I speak to the manager Aaron and find out what
What do you love about Orpington?
needs doing. This could be anything from sorting out the books, CDs and DVDs. All the items and clothes we sell are kept on the shelf for a fortnight so that we keep updating the displays. I also do things like check toys are in working order and count the pieces of a jigsaw to make sure they’re all there. After lunch I then go on the till for the afternoon until the shop closes.
What’s the most rewarding thing about your job?
I’ve lived here since 1972 and have seen a lot of changes – some for the better and some for the worse. I’m not a fan of the speed bumps in the High Street and it’s a shame that some of the larger shops have closed over the years, but it’s a great community and I have wonderful neighbours, so I have no plans of moving. I wish more people would embrace the community spirit – if more people helped one another and looked out for each other instead of focusing on just themselves, the world would be a better place.
I love just being here, helping the charity and meeting people. Because I’ve worked all my life in the High Street, I know so many people, so it’s nice when I’m out working and get to chat with them. It’s lovely to be part of the local community.
What are your hopes for the future?
PDSA Orpington is located at 307 High Street, Orpington. Call 01689 871243 to find out how you can help.
I don’t have any plans – I’m happy to carry on for as long as I can with the PDSA. Apart from that, I’m a big cruise fan and try to book a cruise every other year.

Thara Thai Review
Life In Orpington’s editors, Nicky and Lauretta, visited Thara Thai restaurant in Locksbottom to try the lunchtime Thai tapas menu…. First impressions On entering we were welcomed by a friendly waiter and shown to our table. The restaurant was quiet with only a couple of other diners, meaning it was relaxing and we could chat easily. Alternative easy listening music was playing in the background and was the ideal volume.
The service Service came with a smile and the waiter explained how the Thai tapas menu worked – there was a choice of set menus otherwise there was the option to create your own, but there was an additional fee for this.
The food Nicky chose Tapas 1 which included Chicken Green Curry, Chicken Satay, Stir Fry Mixed Vegetables and Jasmine Rice. Lauretta chose Tapas 3, which included Yummy Chicken Wings, Duck Rolls, Vegetable Tempura and Jasmine Rice. Both dishes were presented on large plates. Nicky says: “The Green curry was spicy but not too hot with a light sauce packed full of flavour. The chicken was well marinated and tender and mixed with fresh vegetables. The Stir fried mixed vegetables tasted very fresh and crispy and were served with lovely
14 Life in... Orpington July 2019
attention to detail. The carrots & courgettes were crinkle cut which looked great and were served in small bite sized pieces. The dish came mixed in a tasty oyster sauce. The Jasmine rice was fresh and the right consistency, with just the right amount to complement the other dishes. The chicken satay was my favourite, the sauce was amazing and very flavoursome - peanutty but not oily. The chicken was delicious and extremely tender. It was served on a tasty beansprout salad.” Lauretta says: “The Duck Rolls offered a crispy outer coating and were very tasty, while the Jasmine Rice was sticky (as it should be) and flavoursome. The Vegetable Tempura also offered a crispy outer batter with different fillings inside including broccoli, carrot, courgettes and pepper. The chicken wings were tasty but mild, so they’re ideal for kids. The meal was lovely, but I would probably swap the chicken wings for something like stir fry mixed vegetables next time – only because you had two dishes (duck and vegetable tempura) with a battered coating, and you could get away with losing one of the meat dishes. Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed my meal – really tasty, bursting with flavours and my favourite was definitely the duck rolls and vegetable tempura.”
The décor The restaurant was super clean (we even checked out the loos and they passed the test) and the décor was simple but attractive. The owners have also done a great job in introducing plants to brighten up the space. We liked the little nods towards Thailand – elephant prints and ethnic patterns with clean lines and an uncluttered feel.
The details The Thai tapas meals cost £10.95 each and drinks (Jasmine Flowering tea and a lemonade) came to £5.80, with the total food bill £27.70.
Summary Nicky says: “Each portion size was good for a lunchtime tapas and it's a great way to try smaller portions of Thai dishes. The four dishes were plenty for me and I left feeling nicely full but not over bloated. Food was fresh and tasty and was served quickly.” Lauretta says: “The Thai Tapas is great if you have a healthy appetite and offers great value for money. I struggled to finish my plate as I was so full. The flavours were delicious and overall I’d recommend the Thai tapas as an alternative lunchtime meal.” Would you like a review of your business? Health & Beauty Beauty recycling
Knowing how to recycle your beauty products can be confusing, but help is at hand from Currentbody, who has compiled the ultimate guide to recycling beauty products…. Can recycle: • • •
Hairdryer - must be taken to a recycling centre Shampoo bottles - Ensure you remove plastic cap, and wash the bottle thoroughly and dry Deodorant can - Made of steel or aluminium, both of which are recyclable. Make sure the can is completely empty and detach any removable parts.
Partly recyclable:
• Mascara - Whereas mascara tubes are often made from recyclable material, applicators typically aren't, so make sure to separate these out before disposing
HOW TO FLOSS
Tops tips from The DenCare Clinic in Locksbottom • • •
Pull around an arm's length of floss from the dispenser. Wrap the ends of the floss around your middle fingers. Hold the floss tightly and using your index fingers and thumbs, guide the floss around each tooth in a C shape and move it back and forth in a push/pull motion and then up and down against the side of each tooth.
• •
Foundation bottles - Currently no pumps on the market are recyclable. If the bottle is glass you can recycle but ensure you've washed and dried it first Makeup palettes - Most palettes contain magnets and mirrors which aren't recyclable, so these parts need to be disposed of separately
Can't recycle • • •
• •
Make-up wipes - Unless labelled as biodegradable, makeup wipes are not recyclable. Consider buying reusable makeup pads or cotton pads instead Nail varnish bottles - Due to the hazardous toxins found in nail varnish, the glass bottles are not recyclable even thoroughly rinsed Make-up brushes - Neither animal hair nor vegan brushes are currently recyclable
Be sure to clean around the gum line and avoid excess force or snapping the floss. (TIP - using dental tape or satin floss can often help prevent breaking the floss midway.) Remember practice makes perfect! Don't give up! If you really can't get on with floss, there are other inter-dental aids on the market, be sure to ask your dentist the best one for you

Heads up on hayfever! Ah, summertime – family barbecues, footie in the park, walking the dog, picnics with friends - and your other half constantly sneezing! Unfortunately the pollen in our lawns and parks is one of the main reasons for our hay fever. Grass pollen affects a staggering 95% of people living with hay fever. The season starts in May and peaks in June, and again in July, making our lawns a hidden ‘pollen bomb’ waiting to go off… Most types of grass release their pollen when they’re tall. The pollen is released from a flower at the top of the plant. So if you keep your lawn mowed regularly, it's less likely to release its pollen. Another way of reducing the severity of hay fever symptoms is to prevent or reduce the amount of grass pollen entering your body. Everyone can tolerate a certain amount of pollen in their body without reaction. But once this

Consider using HayMax organic drug-free allergen barrier balms which work by stopping grass and other pollens getting into the body. There are no drowsy side-effects and, as it’s drug-free, HayMax is suitable for children and pregnant and breast-feeding women. DESIGN TIPS YOU MIGHT NOT HAVE THOUGHT OF...
• Add interest to a room by placing items at different heights - shelves, tables, picture frames etc and having them in different textures and complementary colours • Focus on a feature - preferably as soon as you walk into a room. It could be a stunning piece of furniture, a really unusual object or some colourful artwork. • Rather than pushing your furniture against the walls try to bring them into a room if possible. You'll create
6 questions to ask when viewing a property
a sense of depth and it will also free up wall space for things like mirrors and wall murals.
•
Always have the option of using lamps in rooms like bedrooms and lounges. They will take the harshness of spotlights or down lights away and create a softer, more relaxed vibe.
•
In small spaces or those without much natural light, use silk paint on the walls or lighter wallpapers to bounce light around. Mirrors also work well in lightening up a space and making it appear bigger.
THAT’S CUSHY!
Cushions need a bit of a refresh? Pop a tumble dryer sheet into your cushion for that fresh smell that should last at least a week!
SUMMER GARDEN IDEAS 1. Group pots/containers in threes or fives and put in different plants or flowers of varying heights to add interest.
1. What are the neighbours like? 2. Why is the seller moving? 3. Is the property freehold or leasehold? If leasehold how long is the lease, and what are the associated costs? 4. How much is the council tax? 5. What direction does the property face? 6. Exactly what is included in the sale?
2.
For more advice & tips speak to Your Move O’Neil or visit https://www.your-move.co.uk/ buy/guides/house-viewing-tips
6. Nests galore. There are so many types of birdhouses – from novelty ones, to the ones you can paint and personalise. It’s a great way of encouraging more wildlife – just don’t forget the bird seed!
28 Life in... Orpington July 2019
Alfresco dining! Sunny days call for picnics on the lawn, while balmy evenings can only mean it’s time to get the barbecue out – stock up on the charcoal before the supermarket runs out!
3. Revive & revamp. If the fence or garden shed look like they need updating, give them a new lease of life by repainting – and maybe opt for a brighter shade for summer. 4. Den planning. Kids love dens, so when the weather warms up, give them sheets and sticks to create their own garden hideaway. 5. Energise your green patch by making the most of solar lights – you can put them under the parasol, buy stakes to light a pathway or opt for spotlights to highlight a garden feature.

CHOOSE THE RIGHT KETTLE! • • • •
Consider your kitchen colour scheme. If you've got a country-style kitchen then a retro design kettle will look better than a modern stainless steel one If you lead a busy lifestyle opt for a higher wattage kettle - they boil quicker! With Orpington being a hard water area, look for designs that come with a washable filter - it will help you keep on top of the limescale build up! Think about the capacity kettle you need. If you live alone or as a couple you can get away with a smaller one, but a family of six will need at least 1.5 litre capacity

CAN SPONTANEOUS TRIPS REALLY MAKE US HAPPY? Spontaneous trips – defined as trips that people decide to book within two weeks of departure for at least two days away – are on the increase. And according to Travelzoo’s research, spontaneous travellers are twice as likely to describe themselves as “content” or “happy” as those who never travelled. They also felt themselves able to handle unexpected challenges more easily. “Time spent with family and friends” was identified by 50% of respondents as the unplanned activity that gives them the most spontaneous happiness, with “getting away for a few days” (36%) in second place. lifeinmagazines.co.uk

Technology
The sky’s the limit for Gatwick Gatwick airport is the focal point for a number of tech innovations right now, starting with noise pollution. The airport has invested close to £1 million in the latest technology so that nearby residents can check in real-time on noise levels generated. Complaints can also be recorded via the app that has been developed and it is hoped that the data collected can help manage the airport’s performance. The airport is also experimenting with robot valet parking. From the second half of 2019, passengers will have the chance to hand over their keys at the South Terminal of Gatwick and at which point a driverless robot will gently lift their car and store it in a secure car park. The system is also connected to real-time info so the robot can simply return the vehicle and the passenger receives an SMS when they arrive back to let them know it is ready. Gatwick’s partner is Stanley Robotics, who hopes that this collaboration will lead to a sustainable solution for the future and create a seamless customer experience when travelling.
THE EYES & EARS OF THE CLASSROOM The Chartwell Cancer Trust is the first UK charity to introduce a pioneering tech solution in the South East region giving young cancer and leukaemia patients a lifeline back to school life, education and normality during their treatment period and beyond. An estimated 35,000 children in the UK are battling long-term illness and the inevitable absences from school can be as devastating as the illness itself. For educators and parents, there’s been a frustrating lack of solutions – until now. Equipped with microphone, loudspeaker and camera, the AV1 robot acts as the child’s eyes, ears and voice in the classroom creating a real-time, interactive, app-based connection with school, wherever the child is. The Trust, with the support of Clarkson Wright and Jakes and Vinci Facilities, has raised funds to enable 12 robots and children to be paired – with plans to expand the provision further based on the success of the trials and the growing demand. A SMART NATION! Research supported by brands including Amazon, Google, Yale, Philips Hue, Ring, Samsung SmartThings, tado and Swinton Insurance, reveals that there are now 15 million ‘smart homes’ in Britain. A total of 57% of the country's homes now have a smart device to control lights, security, kettle, vacuum cleaner or other devices. And while the majority of smart homeowners use their tech while inside the property, more than one in six use the smart tech remotely on a daily basis to set the temperature or put on the kettle before returning home. lifeinmagazines.co.uk

Eco News AIR POLLUTION
Air pollution can cause both short and long term effects to your health. It can cause diseases, allergies and particularly affects those who suffer with asthma and underlying respiratory problems. Air pollution can damage the environment and not only affects humans but also animals and food crops. Both human activity and natural processes can generate air pollution.

Air pollution in Orpington Two Orpington residents, Tim Webb and his neighbour, Mick, decided to get involved in monitoring the local air quality near the Town Centre and have been building and setting up their own home-built air quality sensors. These sensors are currently reporting live data via the Openesense site, just search for Orpington. https://opensensemap.org/ The pair wondered what the local air quality was like in the area and wanted to try out a low cost DIY approach to see what could be achieved. The information is updated every few minutes based on the

latest readings from the sensors. The air monitors measure temperature, humidity and air pressure. The sensors work by using a fan to draw in air through a tube, this is then scanned by a laser. The pollution particles in the air are counted and reported online via a programmed Arduino board using a wifi connection. The components are all housed in a weather proofed box mounted on a suitable wall or drain pipe. All you need to report the data is a reliable Wi-Fi connection and a 5 volt power supply within 3 metres of the sensor. It is easy to get involved! Although the sensors are obviously not in the same league as professional units costing from ÂŁ6,000 upwards, they give an indication on the air quality in the immediate area and they found that pollution in Orpington is generally worse in the winter as more people are using cars and engines are less efficient emitting more fumes. Also the winter sees a rise in pollution from wood burning stoves. Hot still weather can also affect air pollution as pollutants settle and do not disperse, we need rain and wind to disperse the particles. The highest they have recorded pollution in Orpington was during the recent fire at Green Street Green.

A Final Thought…
A Review Of Celebrity Edge
(the most technologically advanced ship in the world)
by NICKY GRANT & LAURETTA WRIGHT We were beyond excited to get an invite to review Celebrity Cruises’ new ship, Edge, which launched at the end of 2018. As we set sail from Southampton, we counted our lucky blessings to be on board. From ‘car to bar’ in 10 mins!
Celebrity’s ultimate aim is to get its passengers ‘from car to bar’ in less than 10 minutes. It’s a great concept and, if it works, would make the whole checking in process seamless - unheard of when it comes to travel usually! We were able to check-in in advance via the Celebrity Cruises’ app, meaning that the actual checking-in bit in person was very pleasurable, helped by the fact that there were no queues. There was no keycard to pick up prior to finding our cabin. When cruising, keycards are left outside the room for passengers to access. Our cabin had all the mod-cons including a safe, a fridge, a wardrobe, hairdryer, ensuite and get this – a window that turned into a balcony!
The technological edge
So here’s what we learned about the most technologically advanced ship in the world: • Carrying 2,600 passengers, Celebrity Edge was the first ship to be completely designed using 3D technology. • She boasts a wealth of high-tech innovations – one of the most impressive of these being the latest in facial recognition software. This is offered as standard, meaning passengers no longer have to endure queues when they check-in for their sailing. • Passengers can also bypass traditional document checks by uploading a ‘selfie’ via the app. The app allows passengers to automatically be checked in. • The guest app is also great for keeping track of your daily planner and making reservations. Passengers can also engage in guest-to-guest messaging for free and also do group chats – great for families and larger groups. • Looking ahead, ship to guest messaging (and vice versa) is in the pipeline, as is a virtual concierge. And if the intelligent chat bot can't answer a passenger’s query, it's directed straight to guest services. • You can open your stateroom using your mobile phone (it becomes the digital key!) Celebrity wants to take this one step further so that the cabin door unlocks as you approach, and mobile phones will be able to control automation services – turning cabin lights on/off, putting the heating up etc… • In another bold move (and we really like the sound of this), passengers will even be able to order food via their phone, as well as book things like shore excursions and onboard experiences. The possibilities are endless.
36 Life in... Orpington July 2019
The rest of what you should know
Edge is as sophisticated as they come. If you’re into your tech, then you’ll love the gadgets, the gimmicks and the game-changing check-in procedure– as long as they work. The ship has got some spectacular speciality restaurants on board (we ate at two of them and they were delightful – especially Le Petit Chef, where dinner is brought to life through engaging digital animation projected onto plates), but we were both really impressed with the dining buffet. It appeared to be ‘open all hours’ and changed its food about ten times a day - you can imagine that we took our “investigative journalist” roles seriously when it came to exploring all aspects of the buffet. Let’s just say that we avoided the scales for a few weeks after returning home. Another thing that really impressed us was that Edge was the first cruise ship to ban plastic straws and there are no plastic bottles on board whatsoever. Also godmother of the ship is none other than Malala Yousafzai. In 2014 she became the youngest-ever Nobel Peace Prize recipient and donated the entire prize earnings to finance a school for girls in Pakistan. If we’ve whetted your appetite for all things Edge – and the amazing technology that you can have fun with on board, then you should know that this summer she will transport guests to the stunning vistas of the Mediterranean with a range of seven- to 11-night sailings from iconic cities like Barcelona and Rome. Price-wise, an 11-night Amalfi Coast and Greek Isles fly/cruise starts from £3,639 per person in an Infinite Balcony Stateroom, based on two sharing. It includes flights from Heathrow, transfers, a free classic drinks package for two, meals and entertainment on-board and all relevant cruise taxes/fees. We’ve heard that Edge will be joined by Celebrity Apex in 2020, and two additional sister ships in 2021 and 2022. And because of that we’re thinking of starting a new magazine “Life On…. A Celebrity Ship” in order to get a sneak preview of the ships – what do you reckon? Would the powers that be go for it? In hindsight we’d probably spend 90% of our time in the dining buffets doing our best impersonation of “investigative journalism”, so perhaps that wouldn’t be such a great idea after all.
