Getting Orpington to know
George Allen
Sunnyside by Emily Warren
George Allen of Sunnyside More than 100 years ago Orpington was surrounded by many large properties, most of which have been demolished. This month we take a look at one of these houses and its famous resident… The house is ‘Sunnyside’, which was located in Tubbenden Lane (where Tubbenden Close, Morris Close and Barry Close are today). Built in 1873, it was a substantial property constructed in the local ‘London Yellow’ bricks, with a gravelled driveway that terminated in a carriage sweep. It had terraced lawns, a tennis court, bowling green, putting green, rose garden and orchard across two acres of land. The house boasted an entrance hall, three reception rooms, 15 bedrooms, bathrooms, box room, domestic offices and a conservatory. The house was built for George Allen and his family of eight children and, at that time, Orpington was largely rural with a population of just over 200. Previously living in Heathfield Cottage, Keston the location of Orpington was chosen due to its close proximity to the railway station and the extra space it would provide for Allen’s work. George Allen (1832-1907) was a publisher, engraver, mineralogist, geologist and most importantly a lifelong assistant to John Ruskin, the Victorian philanthropist, social thinker, art critic and writer of many books. Allen was a trained carpenter when in 1854, at 22 years old, he first saw Ruskin at the London Working Men’s College, and this led to a 45-year association. Allen had an artistic talent that Ruskin quickly spotted and he soon became a full-time assistant, undertaking many roles for Ruskin.

George Allen 1903
In the early 1870s Ruskin had the radical idea of publishing his own work and George Allen undertook this task for him. Allen’s business acumen influenced Ruskin on many reprint decisions and he became a very successful publisher. All the books published by Allen would include the text on the inside cover ‘GEORGE ALLEN, SUNNYSIDE, ORPINGTON, KENT’ and these would have been distributed worldwide via the tiny post office (then situated at Ivy Cottage), at the lower end of Broomhill Road. George Allen died in 1907. The publishing company, George Allen & Sons, continued and, in 1914, was taken on by Stanley Unwin (becoming known as George Allen and Unwin), continuing until 1985. Sunnyside was renamed Ruskin House in 1915 with new owner John Hunt (the County Treasurer) and, following his death in 1945, was purchased by Kent County Council. It was used to provide shelter for families made homeless following the war and was demolished in 1973. THIS MONTH'S WINNER
I love 'Life in Orpington' and always pick up spare copies from the train station to give to friends. It has very interesting and pertinent information and articles - from top tips and police advice to community news and council and transport updates. I like the 'Getting to know Orpington' section as I'm interested in local history. I also read the 'What's On' pages to keep up to date. I think there's a good balance of news and adverts and it's interesting to hear how well local businesses are doing. I have entered your competitions on the odd occasion when I know the answers! May 'Life in Orpington' enjoy a long life!
Have you read our online blog posts? We talk honestly about the business, what we’ve been up to and our aspirations – see lifeinmagazines.co.uk/blog/ Here’s a lovely comment that we received in response to our latest blog post…

I’m the chairman of the Orpington Village Halls and I’m writing to congratulate you both on your amazing Life In Orpington magazine. You are both very talented ladies and it is great to know that you are both so committed and concerned about local issues and what’s going on locally. Having lived in Orpington for over 80 years, I appreciate what you are doing to keep Orpington firmly on the map. Wishing you continued success. Norman Farrow
A nod to the past
The Bethlem Museum is a great place. Although it’s not politically correct but this was the place behind the name ‘Bedlam’, as in “it’s right bedlam in there”. A few years ago the Royal Bethlem and other heritage groups, including the Orpington History Organisation, were part of the LBB Heritage and Arts Forum that we were the chair of and met and operated from the Bromley Museum in Orpington. Due to austerity cuts, the council disbanded the group, closed the museum and made the curator and staff redundant. It’s now down to all of us to keep heritage, arts and culture alive! If you want a nice and informative day out go to ‘Bedlam’! The Orpington History Organisation

Community News - NOTICEBOARD MAYOR ADOPTS KITTENS
Since September 2018, Kent law firm Clarkson Wright & Jakes has raised over £8,000 from various fundraising events for their chosen charity of the year, The Chartwell Cancer Trust. Community News - CHARITY WATCH Raising Awareness….
Gary Valentine-Fuller set up the MumMum Foundation following the death of his nan (his ‘MumMum’), who Gary describes as “the most loving, caring and beautiful person”. He wanted to give something back to those who are going through cancer treatment as his ‘MumMum’ did.
What service do you provide?
We support families affected by cancer. Our primary objective is to help put smiles on the faces of those who need them most, whether it be a meal out with loved ones, a trip to the theatre, a day out, a weekend away or simply someone to talk to.
Who is it available to?
Individuals and families who have been affected by cancer. We were blessed enough to share beautiful memories with our loved one; we want families simply to share the same blessing with theirs. We ask nothing in return. We are just doing what our loved one, ‘MumMum’ would have wanted.
How are you funded? Only via donations.
Do you accept donations?
Yes – people can donate via the website.
When and where do you meet?
We have monthly meetings in my office 262 High Street, Orpington C/O V&T, with the trustees and patrons. People can pop in anytime to see me if they need our help.
Are you looking for volunteers?
Yes, we always need volunteers at our events when we hold them – charity balls, dinners etc.. the more the merrier!
How can people help?
By visiting themummumfoundation.org.uk to donate. The MumMum Foundation is based at 262 High street, Orpington (c/o Valentine and Turner). Visit facebook. com/themummumfoundation, call 020 7701 2838 or email themummumfoundation@gmail.com for more information.

A new £320,000 council investment in Bromley’s Central Library will transform the borough’s flagship facility. The upgrade work will include the introduction of ‘Toyland’, a creative play space for younger library users featuring characters and themes from the stories of Enid Blyton, herself a former Bromley resident. Adults will benefit from a new IT suite with super-fast, quality printing and enlarged study spaces. Quiet areas will also be created for people who want to study in silence, as well as space for those who want to work together and chat while they do so. The redesign of the building will allow customers to take full advantage of unobstructed views across London, while public toilet facilities are also being installed so library users can stay and enjoy the space for longer.

5 IDEAS FOR FINANCIAL SECURITY FOR THE SELF-EMPLOYED 1. Invest in long-term savings: They tend to offer better rates than easy access accounts. Have a look at stocks and shares ISAs as a starting point. 2. Hire a professional: The annual tax return is something self-employed people have to look forward to every year. If accounts aren’t your thing, get in an accountant to help things run smoothly. 3. Separate business from personal: Open a dedicated business account so that you keep it separate from your personal one. It will make life easier when completing your tax return too. 4. Put away for a pension: You’re going to have rely on yourself for a pension in retirement, so start saving the pennies now – ideally in a private pension. It’s worth knowing that there’s 20% tax relief offered on anything you pay into the pension too. 5. Utilise local services: Bromley Council’s Business Site has come on leaps and bounds in recent years. Make the most of it by signing up to their newsletter and seeing what’s new for local business at bit.ly/bromleybusiness January 2020 Life in... Orpington 21

Q: I can’t keep an orchid alive! Where am I going wrong? A: Orchids are sensitive - they dislike dry air so avoid leaving above a radiator and don't put them in direct sunlight. In the growing season (usually spring through to autumn), water weekly and feed with a specialist orchid fertiliser every week. Tend to your orchid by wiping dust from the leaves regularly and don't overwater it - allow the roots to soak up the water and then get rid of the excess water in the base. Also, tap water can be a bit harsh, so cool boiled water or rain water is preferable. Finally, many people feel the need to bury their orchid in soil but this is wrong - it’s why orchid compost is predominantly bark, so it should be kept loose. Sue Ball, Time4Flowers | timeforflowerskent.co.uk
Q: Help, my boiler has stopped working and it’s freezing outside. What do I do? A: Some boilers suffer from frozen condense pipes when temperatures drop below freezing for a day or two. To thaw a frozen condense pipe, pour warm (NOT boiling) water on it or use a hot water bottle or a heat wrap (that you might use for a muscle injury). Then contact your installer to check everything is working properly. If your boiler is not working for any other reason, contact a fully qualified installer straight away. Read our blog for more information on what to do - stevensonheating.co.uk/ condense-pipe-frozen-deal-with-it Stevenson Heating | stevensonheating.co.uk
Q: What basic checks should I make to my bike before I go on a long cycle? A: 1. Check the wheels and tyres. Look to see the quick- release skewers are tightened correctly. Spin the wheels to check that they run freely and are true. Check for adequate air pressure in the tyres, that there is no damage to the tyre and there is enough tread. 2. Test the brakes. Spin the wheels and apply the front and rear brakes separately. Check that the brake lever doesn’t reach the handlebars and that there is enough stopping power to be safe. 3. Check the shifting. Check that the rear derailleur shifts evenly and smoothly between all the gears on the cassette. 4. Lube the chain. A light oiling is fine, you don’t want it dripping off the chain as you’ll just get messy and waste the oil. Charlie Clift, Cycle 42 | cycle42.co.uk lifeinmagazines.co.uk
Q: Are there any support networks or groups for children who are grieving?
A: They say grief cannot be measured; you cannot compare one bereavement to another, but when I see a child, especially a young child who has lost a parent, there is no grief quite like it. They are so very confused, lost and heartbroken, but there are certainly networks/groups who can help. Kids Health help to educate those affected – see kidshealth.org.nz/helping-child cope-death-parent while Child Bereavement UK are known for assisting families with the passing of a child. They also help children who have lost a significant person in their lives up to the age of 25. See childbereavementuk.org/ west-london. Our very own Bereavement Café, based in Orpington High Street, also supports young people in need, and we have qualified counsellors who specialise in this area of bereavement. Health & Beauty Make some new food resolutions
New Year’s resolutions often revolve around following a healthier diet, but how do we actually make this work in the real world? And what can we do to make sure we don’t reach for the biscuit tin on day two of the New Year? To help you towards a healthier diet, Dr Michael Mosley has made a list of five easy to follow resolutions that you’ll be able to keep
Resolution #1 – try a new recipe each week Our minds hold out against constraint, but for the same reason, they love novelty. So this year pick out one new Mediterranean Style recipe to try each week. As your taste buds adjust, you will be amazed at how much better fresh food tastes compared to junk. Remember, it’s much easier to follow a healthier diet when the food tastes great and you aren’t eating the same thing over and over again!
Resolution #2 – eat more soup We’ve all been told to drink more fluids. Not many of us, though, have been told that eating soup actually helps you to lose weight. A number of experiments have shown that people who start a meal with a low-calorie soup course actually go on to take in fewer calories not just at the meal, but throughout the rest of the day.
Resolution #3 – cut back on sugar, but don’t feel that you have to go ‘cold turkey’ Cutting down on sugar is easier said than done, we know. However, to truly maintain a healthier diet, high sugar foods have to go. However, you don’t have to go cold turkey, and if you are someone that can’t quite imagine a world without sugar, then make sure you start out slow. Start by cutting down on the obvious sources such as soft drinks and sweets and make sure you have a healthy alternative for these. For example, sparkling water with lemon wedges makes a great alternative for lemonade, and a handful of berries will eventually become a far tastier treat than a pack of Jelly Babies. Once you get through the initial ‘hump’, you won’t want to go back.
Resolution #4 – eat protein in the mornings In 2014, researchers at the University of Missouri found that when volunteers ate a moderate amount of protein with breakfast, they experienced fewer food cravings later in the day. This is because by preloading with protein, you also preload your brain with dopamine, the chemical that powers your reward-circuits. This, in turn, means that sugary food is less capable of delivering an external “hit”, making it easier to choose a healthier diet. Nuts and seeds are good sources of protein, as are eggs, dairy and quinoabased foods. Put a ‘protein pot’ on your breakfast table this year and watch your whole diet improve.
Resolution #5 – make an ‘anchoring routine’ for junk food Make a New Year’s Resolution to follow a mindfulness routine every time you are faced with temptation. Mindfulness emphasises the close link between our decision-making and how we feel, physically, in the moment. So, next time you’re feeling positive about your body, remain with the thought. Perhaps you’ve just been for a walk – you’re feeling strong, alive and capable. Hold the feeling in your memory. This is your anchor. Now, let’s picture the next scene. You’re at the supermarket, feeling hungry, and a packet of chocolate biscuits are saying “EAT ME!!” Before you act, deploy your New Year’s Resolution #1 – cast your mind back to your anchor. Think about eating the biscuit, and then think about how your body will actually feel after the first one, and then the second, and then the rest of the packet. Cut out the visual cue to eat by closing your eyes and think about the discomfort of your waistband, the loss of appetite for your next meal, the drowsy feeling. And then, make your decision. Whether or not you pick up the biscuits is less important than practising the anchor-routine each time you have to decide. Follow it faithfully and by the time Easter arrives, you’ll be following a healthier diet, with a little less effort each day. Thefast800.com
What’s with herbal medicine? The weather is bad, the nights are long and the Christmas festivities are over. It’s often a difficult time of year to cope with. While you can maintain both physical and mental health by improving diet and increasing exercise, herbal medicine can provide support by helping to fight infection, minimise the effects of stress and raise mood. For example, St John’s Wort, the so called sunshine herb, has mood-enhancing and spirit-lifting properties to help fight depression. Its antiviral and anti-inflammatory properties also make it effective in preventing colds and flu. Saffron, from the crocus flower, has been shown to improve mood in those with mild to moderate depression. It was as effective as the conventional drugs tested, but without the associated side effects. Rhodiola is another herb that can be particularly effective in raising mood. Its anti-stress actions help to reduce depression by acting on both the brain and adrenal glands to normalise the body’s response to stress. ginawebleyherbalist.com

Mindset makeover Hi, I’m Fran and I’m very proud to run Flin’s Fitness Classes & Lifestyle - all things health & fitness are my passion! January is the time when we all get revved up for changing our diet & fitness habits; I’m sure you’ve heard the expression ‘New Year, New You’ a million times. I’m not a lover of this phrase, as actually, there probably isn’t much wrong with you. I’m sure everyone loves you just the way you are! Digging into this a little…what we REALLY want to do is feel a bit healthier, a bit fitter, maybe drop a few pounds etc. What often happens is that we go at it HARD in the New Year – a full on restrictive diet, start running, classes every day... we all know the benefit of positive mindset and losing weight and being healthy is on everyone’s mind in the New Year. It becomes easier the more you practice, like anything of course! Ahah! And then reality happens; you might pick up an injury (as funnily enough your body isn’t ready for pounding the streets in freezing conditions!) or there may be times you feel under the weather and eat way too many ‘white carbs’ and comfort food …or maybe you went out and had a few too many glasses of devil’s juice? Is this failure? We love to punish ourselves if it all goes wrong! Do you get stressed and angry with
yourself? STOP! Yes, this blowout (whatever it was) will not take you nearer to your health goals, but CHANGE THE MINDSET! If it was an injury, look after it, rehab and comeback to fitness via a different discipline. If it was a foodie blowout, you wanted it, you felt you needed it, you enjoyed it I hope? Remember that two steps forward and two steps back is basically a cha-cha! Life is short my friends - we need to practice at being the best version of ourselves, so be happy! Be positive about YOU! Look after yourself with good health, a good diet and some fitness – and remember that everyone loves the occasional cha-cha.... it makes us smile and makes us happy! Have a wonderful January. KEEP YOUR OWN CHICKENS! If you're looking at keeping chickens, make sure your garden is secure and that there is nowhere for the hens to escape. Your next steps are... Choose a coop – there are plenty available. Buy the best you can afford – ones with lift-up lids and slide-out waste trays are a good idea for easy cleaning and access. It’s nice for the hens to have a spacious run, nesting boxes and perches.
Get the kit – you’ll need a drinker for the hens and a poultry feeder, as well as old newspapers for lining the house, dust-extracted wood shavings for the bedding, some layers pellets and oyster shell grit (hens need this for calcium). Buy the hens – always buy from a reputable breeder. Most hens start to lay eggs between 22-24 weeks, so choose ones that have clipped wings and are just about to start laying. Transport them in a cardboard box with air holes. Prices range between £5 and £50 per hen depending on its breed.
Settle the hens in – give them some peace and quiet when you introduce them to their new home. Keep them in their coop with food and water for at least a week, then let them free-range around your garden. You can buy roll-out wire fencing to contain them in an area. When you visit them, give them a treat – they love cooled cooked rice! lifeinmagazines.co.uk

YEAR OF THE RAT
The Chinese zodiac gives each year an animal sign. In popular Chinese astrology Chinese New Year is important. For Chinese people, years begin at Chinese New Year, rather than on 1st January. This year is the year of the rat and it starts on 25th January.
INSTAGRAM INFLUENCERS Sell House Fast utilised data from Influencer Marketing Hub to discover how much money ten popular TV property personalities earn on average from a single sponsored post on their official Instagram profile.
• Nick Knowles is the property TV personality who earns the most on Instagram, at an astonishing average of £1,122 per post.
• George Clarke also seems to be doing well on Instagram; the self-proclaimed restoration man is netting a handsome £339 per post.
• Kirstie Allsopp makes £534 per Instagram post, whilst her ‘Location, Location, Location’ co-host Phil Spencer is banking just £94 per post.
• Surprisingly, ‘Grand Designs’ presenter and mastermind Kevin McCloud is surprisingly accumulating only £71 per Instagram post.
CHECK YOUR DRAWERS Britain is sitting on a goldmine worth up to £13 billion as it stores valuable second-hand goods tucked away in its bits ‘n’ bobs drawers. The average drawer contains tech worth up to £500, according to national research by Mazuma Mobile. And with almost nine out of ten of the 27.6 million households in the UK having a bits ‘n’ bobs drawer, that’s a staggering amount of forgotten loot lying dormant in UK homes.
MONOCHROME
MAGIC
TV Licensing has revealed that more than 6,500 UK households are still watching TV programmes on black and white TV sets. According to figures, London leads the way with 1,311 black and white licences, followed by Birmingham with 323 and Manchester with 245 monochrome licences.
Is that allowed? Data analytic company SEMrush looked at the most common questions Brits ask online from a legal perspective. The key findings included questions such as… • “Is it legal to marry my cousin?”, which was the most popular search. • Asking if it is legal to record someone came in second place. • In third place was asking if it is legal to drive barefoot. lifeinmagazines.co.uk

How to have your best year yet! It's time to get real! Too often we make unrealistic New Year's Resolutions and then fail to stick to them. It's time to take stock of what's good in your life – and what isn't – and make plans to make this your best year yet! Let's dive straight in…
What did you learn?: First, make a list of what your
main accomplishments were last year and then make a list of what left you disappointed. Allow yourself to briefly reflect on these – and then let them go. Next, write down what you learned and find at least two things from each point that would make the biggest difference if you reapplied them again the next time your were faced with a similar situation. Then rewrite these as your own personal guidelines. For example, they could be ‘I'll ensure that I set aside 30 minutes to myself every day’ or ‘I'll make positive steps to changing my career by allowing an hour a week to look for new jobs’… you get the idea!
What's holding you back? The first step in acknowledging where you go wrong and what you stumble over time and time again is by writing down where things go wrong, why they go wrong and how you can prevent them from going wrong. For example, you might want to quit smoking, but your partner doesn't. Things could go wrong because they might smoke in front of you, tempting you. In this case ask yourself how you can prevent this from happening. You might choose to ban smoking indoors or ask your partner to hide the cigarettes. The next step is to acknowledge the negative thoughts that you allow to control your behaviour – and then address them. Stop telling yourself ‘I can't' and start believing you can! What do you value in life? Ask yourself what’s
really important to you and the way that you live your life. What we strongly believe in (e.g. honesty, integrity, kindness, personal appearance etc..) will provide us with the greatest motivation to change how we live our lives. Make a list of the values that you feel are the most important to you or find motivational quotes that include these values, print them off and stick them in frames to put on your wall – whatever works for you.
Roles that matter: We all play different roles in life; some of us are mothers, wives, brothers, uncles, etc… We are also friends, homeowners, managers and negotiators. Write down roles that are the most important to you and include the roles that you want to be doing but are not currently e.g. a Pilates fan, a regular exerciser, a bilinguist etc Think about factors that are preventing you from making this change happen and come up with possible solutions. Setting goals: Using the information you've written about the roles you play – and the roles you'd like to play, it's time to start focusing on your goals. Make them as detailed as possible and then pick out the ones that you feel you must do this year – maybe one from each role, but no more than six. The final step: You can now summarise your Best Year
Yet plan. Start by writing down your guidelines (Looking at your notes from the ‘What Did You Learn?’ question), followed by your affirmations (How you are going to change situations from ‘What's Holding You Back?’). Next write down your major focus for this year (from ‘Roles That Matter’) and finally write down your goals (from ‘Setting Goals’). Now comes the schedule: Set you goals for this month – and what you want to achieve by the end of this month. Do the same for the following month and so on. Keep a record of your goals – what you did to try and succeed, as well as what worked (and what didn't), as this will help you in future planning. Finally, remember not to beat yourself up if things go wrong; sometimes situations are out of our hands and accepting that you can't control everything plays a large role in living a happy life. But congratulations! You've taken the first step in looking at what you want to change – and how you plan on making that happen, which if anything, will make everything much clearer moving forward.

A Final Thought… Be seen and be safe when riding this winter by Matt Benfield of Bigfoot Youth CC
Riding a bike is a great way to keep active. Whether it’s a trip to the shops, meeting a friend or putting in a longer ride at the weekend. Sadly, the long days of summer are well gone and the weather has definitely turned; less daylight, colder conditions and the everpresent risk of getting wet. As a result, for anyone cycling, whether it’s during normal commuting times or just getting out in the day, it’s important to make yourself as visible as possible to other road users and pedestrians to ensure your own safety.
Head protection
Whilst the law says you don’t need to wear a crash helmet, to the majority of cyclists it has become the norm. Wearing a cycling helmet is like getting in a car and putting on the seat belt. At both Bigfoot CC (adult club) and Bigfoot Youth CC, (the junior section), helmets are compulsory. If one of the kids turns up without one, then it’s no riding; fortunately we have spares – but this way it gets ingrained and I know that we are educating a new generation that understand the benefits of wearing one, and won’t be swayed by those that mock the wearing of them. Fortunately the designs have improved greatly so there are styles and branding to suit all ages from three years of age upwards.
Equipment
Ensuring you are suitably dressed is vital. If you get cold and wet when riding, your safety is compromised. You need to remain highly visible, have good fitting clothing and layers that will keep you warm and dry. Cycling retailers and sports outlets will offer all of these without breaking the bank. Please don’t wear anything like ear muffs or headphones that will mask road noise; it is important to be able to hear vehicles coming up behind you, as well as any warnings a fellow road user may give. When it comes to the bike, gone are the days of a cycle light set being heavy and the batteries lasting just a few days. Modern lights can be swapped between bikes quickly and easily, be removed in seconds for security and are available for just a few pounds. For a bit more investment, feature LED technology with a built in battery can be recharged - there is no excuse for not having front and rear lights on your bike. Lights fall into two categories – ones that make you visible on the road and ones that allow the cyclist to see the road. It’s a little like a car arrangement where you swap between the dipped and full beam setting. Flashing lights have become very popular as the action helps the cyclist be seen. These are often found on more expensive light set-ups, where there are a
36 Life in... Orpington January 2020
number of modes available to the rider. Of course a flashing light also increases the battery’s life without reducing its effectiveness. And finally, bear in mind that the law states you must display a red coloured reflector on the rear of your bike.
Look after your bike
Taking care of your bike in the winter is as important as being seen. Like a car, wet road conditions will make stopping distances longer so make sure your tyres are in decent condition, that the tyre pressures are set correctly and that the brake pads aren’t worn out. Local bike shops in the area will happily assess these key areas and then can carry out the work, unless of course you wish to do it yourself when they will be able to supply the parts you need. With the wet conditions also comes the increased risk of a puncture, so it’s recommended that you carry a spare inner tube, tyre lever and pump. If you haven’t ever replaced an inner tube at the side of the road in the cold and wet, familiarise yourself with the process and practise at home.
Ride safely
What was called ‘cycling proficiency’ is now Bikeability and the Bromley Road Safety Team not only carry out this training at schools, but it’s also available for adult cyclists. Bikeability is offered for a range of levels so there is one to suit all cyclists, beginning with learning the basics such as hand signals, positioning in the road and other important aspects of safe riding. If you would like to find out more about cycling in the Bromley area, then Bigfoot CC and Bigfoot Youth CC (for those aged five-16) are both based in the borough and between them, cater for all ages of cyclist. So there you have a guide to riding safely in winter, but please bear in mind that many of these ideas can be applied to cycling all year round – wearing a helmet, remaining visible and taking care of your bike to name just a few.
