SPOTTED ON SOCIAL I thought I’d share a picture of the ‘reversible’ dollies I’ve been knitting for the Cancer Hair Care charity for children with cancer. These dollies are distributed by the charity across NHS hospitals to children. One side of the dolly has hair the other doesn’t; just a small hat. Theses dollies are used to explain to a child what is happening to either themselves or an adult affected by cancer and the hair loss that follows treatments from certain drugs.

The outbreak of the First World War in 1914 saw men from all over Britain and the Commonwealth rush to join the fight; some ‘on reserve’ rejoined their old regiments and battalions, others joined queues to volunteer, anxious not to miss out as it would ‘be over by Christmas.’ They came from far and wide, including Australia, New Zealand and Canada. Many, having served their time in the regular army, had migrated to try their hand at farming – looking for new opportunities.

As we all know, the Great War (1914-1918) saw unimagined carnage and devastation, not just to the lands over which it was fought, but to the men themselves who gave their lives in thousands. Many endured terrible wounds. The province of Ontario wanted to make their contribution to the war effort and built a hospital, the 16th Canadian General (known locally as the Ontario hospital), at Orpington at their own cost and fully maintained by the province. It was one of the largest and most up-to-date military hospitals in the world. It was open to troops from Britain, Canada, Australia, Newfoundland and New Zealand – all were welcomed and treated.

When it opened in February, 1915, just four months after the start of building, it comprised 20 wards, each containing 52 beds, providing care for 1,040 patients. It was not enough to meet the level of need during the war years and in 1917 an extension commenced, to double capacity and increase the number of beds to 2,120. An isolation ward with 40 beds was also added.

Some of the statistics are truly amazing: in a six-month period, 448,955 meals were served at a cost of £42,561 (today worth in the region of £2,254,450). The laundry bill was £3,405 (today £180,365) and they used 17,201,000 gallons or 78,197,294 litres of water. Up to the end of January, 1919, the number of admissions were: British - 12,156; Canadian - 12,483; Australian - 1,626; Newfoundland - 2 and New Zealand - 11 – a total of 26,278. For the same period there were only 182 deaths.

solution was a metal mask to hide their injuries – a living death. There was a state-of-the-art operating theatre as well as a Pathological Laboratory, a Bacteriological Laboratory, a Clinical Laboratory, a Dental Department and an X-ray department.

Women played an important part in the care of patients, not just as nurses. What would now be called occupational therapy, was provided by Lady Patricia Ramsay teaching patients how to knit, sew and make fancy goods. There was a well-organised rota of visitors who brought bright smiles, cheery gossip, gifts of fruit and flowers, along with tender solicitude and gentle sympathy to bring hope and solace to men so far from home and families.

On 19th December, 1919, the Bromley & District Times reported that the hospital had been sold to the Ministry of Pensions for £80,000 (£4,237,600 today). Its intended use was ‘for the care and treatment of convalescent and disabled soldiers handed over to the ministry by the War Office’. It ultimately became known as Orpington Hospital, and by 1979 most of the hutted wards, originally built from asbestos, had been demolished. The Canada Wing was opened in 1983 and, by this time, the building contained the Out-Patients Department, an operating theatre and five wards. In 1990, the hospital had 400 beds and plans for further development ceased.

(DEPUTY) MAYOR’S VOICE The Mayor, Cllr Russell Mellor, and I have both been fortunate to receive our Covid vaccination booster doses. The Mayor was vaccinated at the Civic Centre site while mine was at Orpington Wellbeing Centre. We have both been enormously impressed by the efficient local vaccination programme.

My injections have been from doctors and nurses who have temporarily come out of retirement and they have been ably assisted by volunteers and regular staff. We owe them all a great debt of gratitude.

I urge everyone eligible to book their booster shot and young people to get vaccinated to help limit the spread of Covid. Information from the UK and other countries is very encouraging for reduction in infections and serious disease brought by vaccination programmes.

If the schools are typical of those in the borough, we have a generation of young children to make us proud. I have found Councillor Tony Owen them beautifully behaved and intent on learning and improving themselves. It is remarkable for children so young. The headteachers, Nicola Crockatt (Redhill) and Joanna Seymour (St Peter & St Paul), take on the awesome responsibility of leading their schools which they do with great enthusiasm which is shared by all the staff.

Mayoral engagements have taken place all over the borough. If your enterprise or group would benefit from a visit please contact us. We would like to help businesses when we can and offer support and encouragement to the many volunteers who improve life in Orpington and across the borough.

Engagements continue to be very varied and include the AGM of ‘Bromley Brighter Beginnings’ who fight food poverty and help disadvantaged people in many ways, Bromley Festival of Music & Speech, Beckenham Model Railway exhibition and a visit to a real railway to support the Mayor of Tenterden’s charity by being guinea pigs for the Kent & East Sussex cream tea train. It’s starting next year and I can recommend a visit!

I’ve been delighted to support my former school, Redhill Primary in Chislehurst, in celebrating their 70th anniversary. I’ve been involved in a Sports and Young Citizens after school initiative at St Peter & St Paul

Every exercise in Pilates will have either a stretch or strength-based element so you will get stronger and more flexible. It has many other health benefits such as better breathing, balance and it helps release tension. If you work from home on a laptop then Pilates can undo the strain placed on your body from being sat down all day. Home or desk workers often suffer from tight hips and back stiffness as well as 'forward neck' posture. Pilates really helps this by opening your spine back up again.

Q: How can I get the most from my mattress?

A:

Make sure you turn your mattress every six months, even more if you are able, to ensure even wear – but be aware if your mattress is one that needs flipping over or swivelling around. Q: When doves are released, how do they know how to return home?

A:

Each dove is a bit like a child in that they learn at different speeds and in different ways. We don’t allow any of our doves to work before they are 8 months old and training can take from 8 -16 weeks. The first few weeks are spent teaching them how to recognise home, where they are fed, watered, warm, safe and cared for.

We do this by placing them into large, spacious baskets which they can see through and placing them for 30-40 mins a day looking at their loft. We then take them out one by one and place them through the Sputnik (a flap they can use to access the loft) - this teaches them how to get back inside. After this, they are brought out into a much larger aviary for the entire day with a much wider range of views, followed by individual collection and placing back home for a week or two before allowing them to attempt this themselves. We open the door and allow them to stay or go back to the loft. They are fed at sunset - this is to ensure everyone is home safely before nightfall and they are trained with a rattle box to tell them it’s dinner - nobody misses the rattle - they all love their food! Then the big day comes where we place them into baskets, take a short walk from home and release them. Over time, this distance increases until they can all navigate their way home. We hand raise all our ‘babies’ as we call them. It takes a huge amount of time, effort and love and they come before any job, every time.

My name is Michelle, and I am passionate about what I do.

I work locally as a Celebrant, in and around Orpington. Having been an Orpington resident for most of my life, I feel it is important to work closely with the community that I live in, and as a result of that, I have also co-founded The Bereavement Café in Orpington.

So, my role as a Celebrant is to work with families who have lost a loved one and help them create a unique and fitting ceremony, to help them say goodbye.

But I have also introduced something called, “Remember Me” and that is to help people document their wishes before they die. This is a really simple way of instructing your loved ones with what you want, when that time comes. We can discuss everything from music choices, your life story, colours, themes, and have it all recorded safely, so that when the time comes your family members aren’t left scratching their heads trying to work out what you would have wanted.

Sarah Spencer-Adams nominated Brenda, a member of the Rotary Satellite Group in Orpington & Zone coordinator for Rotary in south east England & Gibraltar, as a local hero.

Sarah said: “Brenda works tirelessly to uphold and promote Rotary’s principles. She amazes me with her unstinting enthusiasm and tenacity to support others. She has been involved in setting up the army of volunteers to support the Covid vaccination programme in the south east and is a regular Bromley food bank volunteer. She was also key in coordinating sewers for scrubs for the NHS at the height of the pandemic and is looking at how Rotary can support local secondary school children who have literacy difficulty. She has done all this whilst recently losing her mother; Brenda is a very special lady who responds to every request for help.”

First of all, how do you feel about being nominated as a local hero and can you give us a bit of background about yourself?

I am ordinary, certainly not special, but I am proud to volunteer in my community and be part of the new really active Rotary Satellite in Orpington. I have lived in Orpington for 40 years with my husband, Jim, and we have one son, Alex, who is now a composer for television. Professionally, my background is primarily in teaching and the education sector, and when I retired I went to Morley College to study Textiles followed by the Windsor Campus of Bucks University to study Stitched Textiles Schools. I now exhibit and run textile and multi-media workshops internationally.

How did you come to get involved in Rotary and what is your role there?

After giving a talk about Princes Trust and Young Enterprise to Rotary in Bexley, I was asked to join them. I really became committed to activities after going to India to give polio vaccines and then to Nepal to visit a school supported

by Orpington Crofton Club, which I later transferred to.

Suddenly I felt part of Rotary International, one of the largest humanitarian organisations in the world and not just part of a small club. Three years ago I was the District lead for Rotary in South East England and Gibraltar. This was great as I worked with over 70 clubs in the SE including those in Bromley Borough and was able to join in their activities and really see and promote the amazing work they were all doing. Currently, I am the lead for Basic Education and Literacy and the Co-lead for Resilience for Rotary in Great Britain and Ireland. I have been representing Rotary on the Voluntary and Community Sector Emergency Partnership across Southern England since the beginning of the pandemic. I see my key role in Rotary to work in partnership with others to make Orpington and our borough a friendly and supportive place to live, helping bring opportunities and support to residents of all ages.

Have you been involved in anything else community-related locally?

I instigated a socially-distanced afternoon tea on our drives last May in front gardens and drives, providing music and homemade bunting for several houses. I also co-ordinated the collection of pamper gifts from our close for the local hospitals. Amongst other things, I have provided Dementia Friends sessions for Year 7 students at Darrick Wood

Secondary School, the National Citizenship programme and for local charities. I am also on the Bromley Dementia working group, have volunteered at the food bank and at various Vaccination Centres and coordinated around 100 local volunteers to make and deliver 7,000 Scrubs bags, Hearts for hospitals and 3,000 travel to work masks.

What is it you love most about our local area?

And how important are community schemes and local charities?

I find the people of Orpington and its surrounding areas really friendly. We need to support our local shops so they not only survive but grow. We are lucky to have wonderful green spaces and woodlands and even fields within walking distance and I have enjoyed using local walks as inspiration for my art work.

If you could send out a message to our community, what would it be?

Be kind and smile; just one act of kindness every day no matter how small - can make a real difference to how people feel. Remember too, a smile costs nothing! If we do this Orpington will grow to be an even better place that we can all enjoy. We are so lucky to live where we do. We have beautiful green spaces and opportunities many do not have. Let’s appreciate this and nurture them. We also invite you to join Rotary, to share your talents and passions, be our friends and volunteer together.

Thinking of putting the leftovers in the dog's bowl? Or opening wrapped presents in front of your cat? Think twice! The animal experts at Vet Specialists have warned against these common and innocent actions as having serious consequences…

Food to avoid

Chocolate! It’s an absolute NO for dogs, at any time of year. There is a chemical in chocolate called theobromine.

It triggers vomiting, diarrhoea, hyperactivity, tremors, seizures, problems with the heart, and can be fatal. The darker the chocolate, the more severe the effect, so don’t put chocolates on or under your Christmas tree! Other no-go foods include leftover stuffing, mince pies and macadamia nuts. Grapes, currants, sultanas and raisins are all poisonous for dogs, and even the smallest amount of Christmas pudding can cause severe kidney failure. It is unknown if these foods also pose a risk to cats, but it is advisable to avoid.

Things to avoid

Keep wrapping paper and presents out of reach of pets and avoid using ribbons for wrapping. If dogs eat a lot of

wrapping paper, it can cause an obstruction in the stomach.

Cats may want to play with ribbon but if ingested it can cause a blockage or twisted intestine and will need medical attention. The same goes for tinsel. Also, keep candles away from pets and make sure any lit candles are supervised at all times; ingestion can cause choking and there is also a fire risk if your pet knocks a candle over. Store batteries away from pets and make sure toys using batteries are stored away when not in use. Batteries can cause serious internal damage if chewed or swallowed by pets. Alkaline batteries leak a caustic substance that can burn your pet’s mouth, oesophagus or stomach. If you suspect your pet has swallowed a battery, contact your vet immediately.

Plants to avoid

Sharp tips of a Christmas tree can cause internal damage if swallowed. Cats and kittens may also try to climb the tree. It is advisable to secure the base of the tree to reduce the chance of it falling over. Glass baubles can easily break and create sharp shards which are dangerous to animals.

Holly and ivy can cause stomach upsets, while lilies are poisonous to cats, as is the water they are placed in. For pets, mistletoe can cause drooling, retching and vomiting, while Poinsettia can cause irritation to the mouth and stomach, overproduction of saliva and sometimes vomiting.

Check for cold areas: Over a period of time sludge might become accumulated in radiators, having an impact on their performance. To check if it has built-up, see if you can identify cold spots. If so, you’ll need a professional to help clear it.

Sustainable Crimbo

This year Dunelm has taken steps to create a sustainable Christmas for every home, removing glitter from all decorations and foliage and using alternative techniques, such as beading and sequin embellishment. The retailer has also eliminated 400kg of plastic from its wrapping paper and crackers have also had a makeover, with all throw-away and plastic gifts removed and replaced with items you can use and keep.

Low carbon more efficient heating systems such as heat pumps will be no more expensive – and in many cases may end up cheaper – to buy and run than gas boilers, under government plans. Through the Heat and Buildings Strategy, the government has set out its plan to incentivise people to install low-carbon heating systems in a simple, fair and cheap way as they come to replace their old boilers over the coming decade.

This will significantly reduce the UK’s dependency on fossil fuels and exposure to global price spikes, whilst supporting up to 240,000 jobs across the UK by 2035. Combine all the ingredients for the dressing, whisking them together well.

Drain the pear halves and cut each into 4-6 segments.

Separate the chicory leaves and arrange on four plates.

Add the rocket leaves over this. Dot the pieces of pears and turkey in and around the leaves.

Drain the burrata and, working over a bowl, carefully tear it into four pieces. Place one on top of each salad, pouring on any cream that escapes into the bowl.

Spoon the cranberry dressing over the salads. Scatter a pinch of chilli flakes, if using, over each plate. Give each one a sprinkle of salt and pepper, and serve.

FESTIVE SHORTBREAD To celebrate the festive season, Nigel Cooke, head chef at Laura Ashley, The Tea Room, Solihull, shares his festive shortbread recipe. The recipe makes 30 – 35 biscuits, ideal to make as gifts to impress your friends and family this Christmas.

225g butter, softened 110g caster sugar, plus a pinch for dusting 225g plain flour 110g cornflour 1 teaspoon cinnamon plus a pinch for dusting Zest of 1 orange

Method 1. Preheat your oven to 180°C 2. Cream butter and sugar together in a large bowl until light and fluffy 3. Slowly fold in the flour, cornflour and cinnamon and mix until fully combined 4. Roll your biscuit dough mixture into a ball 5. On a lightly floured surface, use a rolling pin to roll out your biscuit dough until it is approximately 1cm thick 6. Use a biscuit cutter to cut out your biscuits 7. Place on to a lined baking tray and prick each biscuit 3-4 times with a fork 8. Place in fridge for 1 hour to chill 9. Sprinkle finely grated orange zest over your biscuits and bake at 180°C for 18-20 mins 10. Once baked, mix your extra pinch of sugar with a little cinnamon and sprinkle over the biscuits before leaving them to cool

Capital Gains Tax A guide to Capital Gains Tax If you own assets, such as property, that you want to sell or dispose of, you could be liable for Capital Gains Tax (CGT). Craig Harman is a tax specialist and partner at Perrys Chartered Accountants. Here, he provides some answers to the most frequently asked questions about CGT. What is Capital Gains Tax? CGT is a tax on the profit you make from an asset when you dispose of it. This includes selling it, gifting it, transferring it to somebody else, exchanging it for something else or receiving compensation for it, such as an insurance pay out. It is important to note that CGT is only payable on the ‘capital gain’ i.e. the profit and not the full amount of the sale proceeds.

Which assets are subject to Capital Gains Tax? • Residential property – unless it is your only home or main residence and is covered by ‘private residence relief’ • Commercial property • Rental property • Shares, excluding those held in an ISA or PEP • Business assets • Personal property worth more than £6,000, excluding your car • Cryptocurrency, such as Bitcoin You will not usually pay CGT on gifts to your husband, wife, civil partner or a charity. CGT does not apply to UK government gilts, Premium Bonds or betting, lottery and pools winnings. However, there are some exceptions.

If someone dies and you inherit an asset, then Inheritance Tax will usually be paid by the estate of the person who has died. However, if you decide to dispose of the asset at a later date, then CGT might apply.

If you are living abroad, but own property or land in the UK, then CGT will apply on disposal. If you are a UK resident, but your assets are overseas then CGT may still apply on disposal of your overseas assets. However, there are

some special rules for overseas assets. Therefore, it is worthwhile seeking professional advice to ensure you fully understand your tax position.

How is Capital Gains Tax calculated?

CGT will only apply when your total gains on an applicable asset you dispose of exceed your annual tax-free allowance - currently £12,300 for an individual or £6,150 for trusts.

Depending on the asset, you may be able to reduce the tax you pay by claiming a relevant tax relief or deducting losses on disposals of other assets. For joint disposals, you will pay CGT on your share of the gain.

To work out your total taxable gains you will need to: 1. Establish the gain for each applicable asset 2. Add these gains together 3. Deduct any allowable losses The amount leftover is the amount subject to CGT. CGT rates vary depending on the type of asset you are disposing of, and your current annual income, but range from 10% to 28%.

How do I report Capital Gains Tax? Reporting CGT depends on when you made the gain and the type of asset you are disposing of.

For properties, you will need to report and pay any tax owed within 30 days of the sale. If you do not do this, you may have to pay interest and you could be fined.

For all other gains, you have a choice of how and when you report the tax, but you must report it by 31 January in the tax year after you made the gain.

How do I pay my Capital Gains Tax liability?

For property, you will need to use a HMRC Capital Gains Tax on UK Property account. For all other assets, you can either report it on your next self-assessment tax return or use the ‘real time’ Capital Gains Tax service – to set this up, you will need a Government Gateway user ID and password.

999 – UK Emergency number - London launched this service in 1937 during a period of popularity for telephone call boxes. 000 could not be used as it indicated the start of an STD call, while 999 was said to be the easiest to locate on a rotary-dial telephone in the dark, as it was next but one to the small metal finger stop.

101 - Police (non-emergency) - This UK number is designed to reduce pressure on 999, allowing police to prioritise emergency calls. Through this number you can talk to your local officer, receive crime prevention advice and report crimes which don’t warrant an emergency response such as if you suspect drug dealing or if your property has been damaged.

105 - National power cut service - This service was introduced in the UK to enable people to either report or find out more about power cuts in their area. People can also ring this number if they spot damage to electric substations or power lines.

111 - NHS non-emergency - The idea behind this number was to make it easier for the public to access local health services. People can speak with an advisor who assesses their needs, gives advice and points them in the direction of the next best place to help them, which might be a late opening chemist or out of hours doctor.

119 - NHS track and trace - UK health officials hope this service can provide early warnings if coronavirus cases increase again as well as helping take the pressure off the 111 NHS service by concentrating on COVID-19 specific cases. It helps trace recent close contacts of anyone who tests positive for the virus and notifies them if they must

123 - Talking Clock - The talking clock was launched in July 1936, created by the General Post Office (GPO) to settle time disputes, and relieve the pressure on people ringing telephone exchanges to ask the time. London telephonist Ethel (Jane) Cain beat 15,000 telephone operators to become the Speaking Clock’s first voice and won £10.50 in today’s money for her work! Around 12 million calls are made to this service each year with specific peaks around clock changing days, New Year’s Eve and Remembrance Day. 159 - Scams crackdown - A range of major banks and technology firms have backed a new service to help you determine whether a call you receive is from your bank or is the work of scammers. It has been launched by Stop Scams UK and the Global Cyber Alliance. Today, many people fall victim to impersonation fraudsters who pose as banks or other firms to trick customers into sending them money. This new hotline aims to disrupt this crime.

888 - Public safety - This new service has been proposed and greeted with a mixed reception and could be introduced in the UK by the end of the year. The idea is to allow people to use an app, or dial or text 888 to trigger GPS tracking. It would send automatic alerts to emergency contacts such as family or friends if the person does not reach home safely by a set time.

Also worth a mention: 555 was introduced by film companies in the 1950s in America to curb prank callers who saw numbers in movies. These digits were chosen as the combination of J, K and L, the letter assigned to the number five on a phone, were not associated with any major American states. Ghostbusters and Fight Club are among popular films featuring telephone numbers with 555 in the code.

On a mission!

The UK Space Agency and NASA have agreed to work together on a mission to observe and map the heliosphere - the area of space surrounding the Sun filled with charged particles known as the solar wind. Scheduled to launch in 2025, the US-led mission will be crucial for future human exploration of the Moon and Mars, and could also improve the UK’s space weather monitoring capability and our understanding of potentially damaging solar flares. As part of the agreement, Imperial College London will design and build one of the Interstellar Mapping and Acceleration Probe’s (IMAP) ten instruments – a magnetometer called MAG – while providing ground support and personnel to support the instrument and science team.

Here’s a rundown of some of the major measures announced by Chancellor Rishi Sunak in his 2021 Autumn Budget speech affecting businesses, with commentary from senior personal finance expert, James Andrews from money.co.uk…

Tax rises National Insurance will be rising from April next year. This will see an extra 1.25 percentage points of tax taken from pay packets - through both class 1 National Insurance Contributions paid by employees and class 4 NICs paid by self-employed workers. This is expected to add about £180 a year to the average standard rate taxpayer's annual bills and £715 a year to the average higher rate taxpayer's bills. The levy will not apply to pensions income or voluntary payments. Dividend taxes will also rise by 1.25 percentage points - this is a tax charged on income received from shares you own. The Chancellor said that he planned to reduce taxes in the next few years.

Minimum wage rises The UK’s lowest-paid workers will see their wages rise from April 1 next year, with the National Living Wage (NLW) increasing from £8.91 to £9.50 an hour – adding £1,073.80 to the annual earnings of someone working 35 hours a week. The minimum wage for people aged 21-22 is going up from £8.36 to £9.18 an hour and the Apprentice Rate rises from £4.30 to £4.81 an hour. Sunak said: “This wage boost

ensures we’re making work pay and keeps us on track to meet our target to end low pay by the end of this Parliament.”

Public sector pay rises After a one year pay pause, the Chancellor said more than 5 million public sector workers would see their pay rise again next year. This includes nurses, teachers and members of the armed forces. Sunak said: “With the economy firmly back on track, it’s right that nurses, teachers and all the other public sector workers who played their part during the pandemic see their wages rise.” How much of a pay rise people will get will depend on recommendations from the independent Pay Review Bodies.

And the rest Other new introductions affecting businesses include Plastic Packaging Tax (PPT) and changes to Corporation Tax. Plastic Packaging Tax will apply to plastic packaging manufactured in or imported into the UK containing less than 30% recycled plastic when measured by weight. It will apply to businesses that manufacture or import plastic packaging components or import packaged goods into the UK. From the 2022 new financial year, all UK businesses liable to pay Corporation Tax will be required to pay a main rate of 19% for all non-ring fenced profits over £250,000.

This is set to increase further in 2023 to 25%. A small profits rate (SPR) will be introduced for business with profits of £50,000 or less so that they will continue to pay Corporation Tax at 19%.

Short Story THE HIGHLIGHT OF THE HOLIDAY

by DIANA ELVIN “Good Morning ladies and gentlemen. We have arranged a very special treat to round off your ‘Book Lover’s Tour’ today.” Outwardly enthusiastic, hiding boredom, the drivercum-guide pressed on.

“Haven’t we had a super week visiting the places where your favourite authors lived and the settings they used for their wonderful novels?” Not being a reader herself, she couldn’t see the point. Still, as long as it sold seats – and it certainly did. The holidaymakers (with the exception of Alex, dragged along by his wife) were loving it, lapping it up.

“Today we shall concentrate upon just one very special writer, the prolific, elusive Bradley Beecham. And, not only will we visit the places associated with him, but we shall actually call at his beautiful home to meet him in person.”

It was the highlight of the holiday. He had never let readers near his home. Still, desperate times called for desperate measures.

“He’ll be happy to sign all those books you’ve bought from the special display at the hotel.” (Shop sales were flagging).

“Along here we come to the simple two-roomed school Beecham attended.” And so they did – well, a reasonable replica anyway, knocked up hastily on the cheap but as accurate as modern materials could manage, conveniently placed at the far side of the modern comprehensive playground to prevent too close a scrutiny.

The organisers had done their best with a writing life spanning 60 years in an environment modernised beyond recognition. They had located the furniture factory where Bradley first worked. He had made the tea and brushed up sawdust for a mere six weeks, not being much good at either brewing or brushing, but they saw no reason to mention this. From the outside the place looked, providentially, much the same, not successful enough to expand or to modernise. Then the tours began and money was paid for coaches to park and passengers to peer so a clause in the agreement naturally specified ‘no changes.’

Luck had also favoured the tour arrangers when they reached the grassy headland from where eager readers

could make out the caves and beaches which had been the mainstay of a whole series. The fisherman’s cottage, now a patched up ruin, was too far out to be seen clearly but the caves looked mysterious and exciting.

Bradley Beecham, when sales fell, had been promoted, by a resourceful agent, as a kind, courteous old gent that it would be a privilege to meet. So, week after week, the fans beat a path to his door. The coach parked by the main gate, the passengers walked reverentially up the path, and the guide gave the ceremonial ‘Rat-a-tat-tat’ to be greeted by Beecham himself with a welcoming smile.

Hating every minute, he would still say all the right things (he was after all, master of the well-chosen word). Sales would be boosted, his agent, his publisher, and book shops nationwide would all benefit. Obviously, today, he didn’t hear them coming. However, it is doubtful whether he would have noticed a herd of stampeding buffalo, he was in such a rage.

“You stupid fool” he was shouting at an unseen recipient, “I can’t see to this now. I’ve got a load of gaping tourists due any minute and I have to look as though I’m pleased to see them, say a load of rubbish like how I love writing, when it’s actually ruddy hard work.”

There was a sudden appalled silence. “Dear, kind Brad” must have caught sight of the disillusioned group outside the open windows.

Then Alex laughed, not unkindly but with simple pleasure at finding this idol was human after all – and shown to be so.

Alex, who never read a book, sometimes lost his temper, often found his clients hard to like and would hate to have them pouring into his house, couldn’t stop laughing. All the boredom and resentment of that long week was expelled as his body shook and he slapped his thigh.He walked forward, hand outstretched, beaming happily. After a startled gasp the other passengers followed, also smiling.

“Good morning, Mr Beecham”, he said. “Do, please, let us in because I think I am going to enjoy meeting you very much after all.”

Earlier this year I won the Life In Orpington... competition to say what I loved about where I live - I love the proximity of Orpington to outdoor spaces and countryside, and the lockdowns made me appreciate it all the more.

I appreciate our outdoor spaces, countryside and nature through walking. But why walk? Is it over-rated? I think not. Hippocrates was quoted as saying walking is our best medicine. He was a Greek physician, born in 460 BC and lived to about 90. He is considered one of the most outstanding figures in the history of medicine, believing that disease was a product of environmental factors, diet and living habits. You could say he was into lifestyle medicine way back then, using diet and exercise to help treat diseases.

I've enjoyed walking for years, and aside from keeping my weight in check, I hadn't really taken note of the health benefits until I was going through breast cancer treatments - walking energised me and helped me recover from surgeries, chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Walking also soothed my mind and body, and helped me sleep better.

At 61 I'm hoping for another 30 years of walking!

Whatever your reason for walking, here's a neat local walk that you might like to try:

- Starting point: Goddington Park. 2 miles/45 minutes, or longer if you walk from home to and from the starting point.

- From Goddington car park, keep the playground to your right and head across the field towards the right-hand side of Orpington FC building, admiring the trees all around as you go.

- At the field end enter the footpath and take the left path going alongside the trees (not the diagonal path across the open field). Follow the path around the edges of the

farmer's fields which are on your right. Be mindful of crops and tripping hazards such as stones or mud along the path.

- Coming towards the end of the fields, go through a gap in the hedge on your left and turn right into a tree-lined tarmacked avenue, then follow this to the lane. Turn right, taking great care crossing Chelsfield Lane, and then enter into Lilly's Wood on your left where the houses end.

- Climb the 5 steps up into Lilly's Wood and follow the main path, keeping the wooden rail to your right. I pick the sloes which grow on the left there in autumn to make sloe gin!

- As you enter into the woods keep straight on and follow the main path all around the woods (don't veer off beyond to other fields or paths).

- If walking in early spring you will see sprinklings of white anemones on the ground, followed by bluebells in May. Cow parsley is also abundant from April until June and there are toadstools to spot in the autumn.

- On completion of your circuit of the woods, retrace your steps, keeping the wooden rail to your left as you walk back to the lane. Turn right, go past a few houses and cross the road back into the tree-lined tarmacked path.

Follow that to the end and go into the playing field.

- At the top left corner of the field, walk up the slope into the next playing field, and on to the far left corner of the next field until you can see your way back to the playground and car park again.
