1916 Orpington Hospital Christmas
This month we take a nostalgic look back at Christmas in and around our district. You don’t have to look too far back to find scenes of that traditional Christmas image. The district has many picture postcard scenes of old churches and villages that, with a dusting of snow, could adorn any quality Christmas card! The Christmas traditions we know today mainly originate from the Victorian period (1800s); 150-plus years of Christmas celebration and evolution of how we celebrate and the demand on retailers.
It seems that some traditions have died off such as the lights switch on in Locksbottom and a real Christmas tree on Orpington War Memorial roundabout. More recently, it's nice to see shops dressing their windows and making colourful displays, Santa's grotto still going strong at The Walnuts and the local Rotary club taking Santa around the streets on his sleigh. Maybe you can share your memories of Christmas in the area on our Facebook page where there is a special post for you to provide your memories. In the past 20 years shopping has moved online via the Internet or via the large out-of-town shopping centres and these have taken trade from the High Street. Shopping online is not new of course, as prior to the Internet there were catalogue stores (eg Freemans, Universal, Littlewoods and Kays) where I’m sure many children happily viewed the toy pages in the hope that Santa would bring them a particular toy. During the first part of the 20th Century Orpington was a growing town, with local commerce and retailers providing all that was needed to the local residents. They would go to their local shops and if they really needed something super special it was a trip to the larger towns or London. Christmas was no different then and shops were busy! The grocers, poulterers, butchers, bakers, fish mongers and dairies would have been working around the clock to supply the Christmas demand. Orpington and St Mary Cray had a number of quality retailers which customers would rely on year in year out. The Butchers such as Townend, Elton’s and Woods would have had queues many deep on Christmas Eve awaiting the freshest meat for Christmas and Boxing Days. Of course, the local churches would have been busy, and the celebration of Christmas would have been a significant set of events in all of the local churches.

Star Letter orpington newcomer
I really enjoy reading the magazine. It is a great to get a feel for all that is going on in the area. As a relative newcomer to Orpington, having been here about 18 months, it really helps to get to know what is making Orpington tick each month and learn about the history of the area. As a big athletics fan I was excited to learn gold medal winner Dina Asher Smith is a local lady certainly helps to put our new home town on the map. I am sure everyone at life in is proud of our local hero. My husband tries to take credit as he thinks he is the centre of the world because when he moved to my home city of Leicester we won the premier League and found Richard 3rd (though I try to remind him that took a long time to happen!) Now we are here and Dina has 3 world championship medals! Looking forward to the Olympics. Watch out in case they find King Arthur in the priory gardens! Jennifer Shelden

Finally, all at DMBC are all pleased to see that Lauretta is progressing well regarding her medical issues. Thanks one again for your continued support to DMBC. David Marks, Dolphin Model Boat Club

Keep it local
Life In Orpington is a brilliant and informative magazine. There must be a lot of people like my 83 year old mother who don’t have access to internet or feel it is too daunting or too late in life to start learning, so a local magazine is a wonderful thing. Elizabeth Williams, Green Street Green

Situated between Covent Garden and Leicester Square and close to Charing Cross Railway Station, Storey’s has been in business since 1984.
Nestled in the historic walkways between Covent Garden and Leicester Square is the pedestrianised street of Cecil Court, the ultimate destination for art, antiques, books, culture and curiosities. Here’s where you’ll find Storey’s; specialists in antique maps and prints.
Offering an insight into how the company originated and how it has developed over the years following the rise of the Internet, Timothy Kingswood, whose family originated from Bromley, explains how he’s putting Storey’s firmly on the map…

hen asked what I do for a living I have often hesitated in my response. Print dealer? Map dealer? Shop or gallery owner? My passports over the years have held at least one of these titles.

advertorial
From an early age I have always had an interest in history and the shop that I now own reflects that interest through maps. In 1984, my father, Ted Kingswood, purchased a second-hand antiquarian bookshop in Cecil Court, Charing Cross, from a business colleague called Norman Storey. At that time dad's principal business was supplying books and periodicals to universities in West Africa, so he asked if I would manage the shop. With the rise of the Internet, bookselling became more difficult and in 2004 I stopped selling books, allowing room to develop the business in a direction that was both viable and reflected my interest. Since then it has expanded into two adjoining shops. The original displays maps of the world from the 17th century until post First World War, while the adjacent shop exhibits original engravings by artists such as James Gillray and William Hogarth. I tired of being called 'Norman' and 'Storey's' is now the name above the door. Most of us will look at a current map and read it literally but within the map is an historical read. In the 17th century, London had a population of 600,000 and the City extended from the Tower in the East to the Palace of Westminster. In the 1660s, Samuel Pepys, (1633-1703), would often walk from lifeinmagazines.co.uk
his home in Seething Lane to Greenwich; his diary describes the activity in the fields and meadows of Rotherhithe. The London metropolitan area now covers 3,000 square miles; if Pepys were to make the same journey today the buildings, noise and smells would be alien to him. His return journey home via boat in the dark with the river in flood, however, would be the same now as in 1660. In 1675, the cartographer, John Ogilby, (1660-1676) published the Britannia Atlas. Contained within were strip road maps of all the principal roads of Britain. The trip advisor of its day, Ogilby's atlas highlighted the market towns and villages with the distances in between and recommended inns or indeed, where not to stop. If travelling by coach from London to Dover, for example, Ogilby advised passengers not to disembark at the top of Shooter's Hill to admire the view: highwaymen would lie in wait to relieve you of your valuables! It’s strange to think that in the same decade (1660), Samuel Pepys would have observed in the distance, those same coaches working their way along the Old Kent Road. Today when asked what do I do for a living, I respond 'I have a hobby job'. That title is certainly not on my passport! For more information on Storey’s see www.storeysltd.co.uk

I work locally as a Celebrant, in and around Orpington. Having been an Orpington resident for most of my life, I feel it is important to work closely with the community that I live in, and as a result of that, I have also co-founded The Bereavement Café in Orpington. So, my role as a Celebrant is to work with families who have lost a loved one and help them create a unique and fitting ceremony, to help them say goodbye. But I have also introduced something called, “Remember Me” and that is to help people document their wishes before they die. This is a really simple way of instructing your loved ones with what you want, when that time comes. We can discuss everything from music choices, your life story, colours, themes, and have it all recorded safely, so that when the time comes your family members aren’t left scratching their heads trying to work out what you would have wanted.

On the market
If you suffer from Irritable Bowel Syndrome, a new chewable probiotic called Alflorex is on the market to make it easier for the elderly, very young, disabled or unwell, who may find swallowing traditional tablets difficult. The product contains the natural 35624® culture – shown in clinical trials to reduce bloating and gas, abdominal pain, urgent diarrhoea and constipation, all the main symptoms of IBS. A monthly supply costs £27.50, equating to 88p a day. For details see precisionbiotics.com
Natural ingredients for your skin
If you read one book... Try ‘Happiness the Inside Job: The 7 Ways to Life-Changing Happiness’ by Matt Pepper, who lectures on happiness and wellbeing for medical teams at Great Ormond St Hospital and runs a private consultancy to motivate people from all walks of life. The book has been a hit with young people and is aimed at improving mind-sets, overcoming personal unhappiness and enabling us to start enjoying life again. See www.mattpepper.com
You skin type will determine what natural ingredients are best for you. To make it easier, here’s the lowdown…
OILY SKIN Your face is usually shiny - and it’s not because you’ve just exercised! Make sure you choose lightweight skincare and avoid touching your face. Ingredients: Witch hazel, avocado, Apple Cider Vinegar, Tea Tree Oil.
DRY SKIN Your skin feels tight – even a few hours after you’ve moisturised. It might also be flaky. Make sure you use a rich moisturiser at least twice a day. Ingredients: Argan Oil, Sunflower seed oil, aloe vera, jojoba oil.
COMBINATION SKIN You’ll typically have a shiny forehead and nose and the rest of your face will feel tighter and dryer. Make sure you use different products for different parts of your skin – a bit of a pain but it’s worth it. Ingredients: Honey, oatmeal, green tea.
What we thought... Nicky tested Davines’ Naturaltech Well-being shampoo and OI conditioner, which are available from MIYU Boutique Salon in Petts Wood. She says: “As soon as you start using the shampoo and conditioner you can tell that they are luxury products. For a start they smell amazing and they really feel like they are nourishing your hair. A little goes a long way with the shampoo, which effectively washes your hair while gently perfuming it. The conditioner has a thick, rich texture which left my hair soft, shiny and healthy looking. All of Davines products are sustainable, natural products so they not only look after your hair but also the environment." Well-being shampoo costs £17.30 for 250ml and OI conditioner costs £19 for 250ml This December MIYU have some beautiful Davine gift packages in stock and every box comes with a free shampoo - a great way to spoil your loved ones this Christmas! lifeinmagazines.co.uk

Instagram has introduced a new ‘Restrict’ feature that helps users have more control over negative comments and cyberbullying. The social media platform consulted with teens to determine how it can help users who are being bullied. Teens said that they were reticent to block bullies on the app because the bully would be notified which might then escalate the situation - and also because when a user blocks someone on Instagram, they give up the ability to see what the bully is doing. Now users can restrict the actions of anyone who posts negative comments or sends offensive messages. Once someone has been restricted, the user who restricted them has to approve their comments before they’re posted. The user and the user who has been restricted can see the comment but it will not appear to others unless approved. Direct messages from a restricted user will appear in a separate inbox and if the original user chooses to read the message, the restricted user will not be notified. To restrict someone, swipe left on the person’s comment, use the privacy tab in settings or go directly to the profile of the account you want to restrict.

Will you?... The most important thing in life isn't money or possessions, it’s family. Incredibly, over 75% of people with children under 18 do not have a will which means their children do not have an appointed guardian. Without you or appointed guardians, social services could take your children into care before deciding who is legally responsible for them. Southeast Legacies feels strongly about changing that, which is why they’re sending school discount vouchers to encourage parents to take the first step. They say: "Writing a will isn’t a morbid thing, it’s about love. It’s about protecting those you care about. It’s about your family knowing that you have considered them and ensuring that they are looked after should they be left without you.” Give them a call (see p5) to get a will drafted from just £99 for you and your family.

How can performance arts boost my child’s confidence?
07845 115954
Attending a performing arts school isn’t about putting a child in the spotlight or on the spot. It’s about encouraging students to come up with ideas as a group and using these to creative something together, which is a huge confidence booster. Role-play is also great for kids who lack confidence as it allows them to be someone else momentarily in front of a small, supportive group and build on their performance.

It’s all about George!
My pet tortoise is called George and he is 17 years old and a Horsefield tortoise. His 18th birthday is coming up on the 23rd of December. George sleeps in a long tank with light and heating to keep him at the right temperature. His tank is in the front room, which is quite warm for him. He mainly eats weeds and salad, but every now and then we treat him to broccoli, banana and dandelion leaves from our garden. He loves to walk in the garden and dig in the dirt, climb through bushes and grass and charge across the patio. He has to be watched outside because some birds like sparrow-hawks would kill and eat him if they got the opportunity so we have to be very careful where he is walking at all times. When George is walking through the house, he has a few favourite spots to stop and sleep in. Just a few are under my desk chair, under the sofa and between the cupboard and the wall. He loves to sleep, but equally, he rampages a lot, which is when he throws himself at the walls of his tank and storms up and down, making a lot of noise. The vet recently said that when he does this outside, he is trying to find a female. I am not sure he realises after 17 years that there are no females behind the shed or under the apple tree! George is an active, loud pet who is so funny to just watch.

Eco News HOW TO HAVE A ZERO WASTE CHRISTMAS
Christmas can be the most wasteful time of the year - with excess packaging, gift wrap, food and more. But Christmas doesn’t need to be so wasteful; here are ten practical suggestions to help you on your way to a zero waste Christmas...
1. Give experience gifts

Give experiential gifts instead of material ones - a spa day, a weekend away, tickets for a gig, cinema or theatre show - or vouchers for a restaurant. Or maybe give a gift of a photography course or yoga sessions - there are plenty to choose from.
DREAM • CREATE • INSPIRE
Reuse gift wrappers, gift bags, ribbons and other bits that you’ve received over the year. You can then reuse them to wrap and decorate your Christmas gifts. You can also use old magazines or newspapers. Or why not wrap the grandparents’ presents in their grandchild's art work? Decorate gifts in leaves rather than bows and avoid using sticky tape instead use twine or ribbons.
3. Made with love
Why not use your creative skills and make someone a unique handmade gift? If you're a keen cook, cakes, jams and chutneys make great presents. Or try making your own soaps, candles or jewellery.

Shopping local is a great way to reduce your carbon footprint and helps your local community at the same time. We have plenty of great local stores and markets in and around Orpington to choose from. Shopping at local butchers, bakers, farm shops or greengrocers means it is likely that a decent percentage of the produce has had a short field-tofork journey. This not only supports local farmers, but it also means the food is likely to contain more nutrients and have less packaging.
7. Practise responsible shopping.
When shopping, try and think about buying stuff that will not harm the environment. Where possible, opt for ethical and renewable products and think about the materials too - choose items made of recycled cloth instead of leather for example.
8. Avoid food wastage
Buy good quality products which are built to last, they may cost a little bit extra, but they will last longer - which keeps them out of landfill for longer.
5. It's crackers
9. Invest in re-usables
Christmas crackers scream landfill, so try making your own this year. Make sure they are not foil coated or covered in lots of glitter. Or you can buy reusable Christmas crackers. They can be filled with whatever you like - a handmade paper hat, a handwritten joke, a chocolate or a useful gift. They look festive and the kids will love helping make them. lifeinmagazines.co.uk
the most wasteful time of the year
6. Shop local
Most people buy too much food over the holiday season which leads to a lot of waste. To avoid this aim to stick to a food plan; work out your menu and only buy what you need to. Try not to impulse buy and aim to reuse leftovers in curries, pasta, soups, omelettes, fillings etc.
4. Buy quality over quantity
lifestyle
Avoid using disposable tableware over the holiday season - invest in reusable tablecloths and napkins.
10. Solar power lights
Opt for solar powered outdoor and where possible, remember to turn your Christmas lights off when you’re out or go to sleep.
Have a merry and zero-waste holiday season!

The amount of wrapping paper thrown away at Christmas in the UK alone would stretch to the moon according to estimates by recycling advisors WRAP.
•
Royal Mail delivers around 150 million cards and packages during the Christmas period and it’s estimated that around one billion Christmas cards could end up in the bin.
•
Statistics show that around six million trees are thrown out after Christmas, creating more than 9,000 tonnes of additional waste.
•
Estimates suggest that 4,200 tonnes of aluminium foil gets thrown away every Christmas in the UK.
•
Research shows that over 120,000 tonnes of plastic packaging will be thrown out, rather than recycled.

butter (cut into cubes), 1 tbsp caster sugar finely grated zest 1 lemon, 85g marzipan, 250g mincemeat, icing sugar (for sifting)
Here’s how:
Preheat the oven to 200C. Put the flours in a mixing bowl & mix, add the butter & rub in until it resembles fine breadcrumbs. Stir in the sugar & lemon zest, then mix in 3-4 tablespoons of water until it comes together. Work the dough into a ball then roll out onto a lightly floured surface. Use a shape cutter to stamp out 9cm circles (save the excess pastry) and use to line a 12-hole bun tin, gathering up the edges into folds. Cut the marzipan into 24 pieces and roll into balls to add two to each pastry case. Spoon in the mincemeat then use the remaining pastry to cut our Xmas shapes. Bake for 12-15 minutes, cool for 5 minutes then sprinkle with icing sugar to serve. Instead of marzipan you can add salted caramel – both taste divine!

Stay warm this winter When you cook using the oven always leave the oven door open when you remove the food - it will help warm up the room. Make your own draught excluder by stitching a long sausage shape and filing it with rice. You could make a smaller one to keep on your car dashboard too (this helps avoid condensation in the morning).
If you've got open chimneys consider installing a chimney balloon. Move furniture away from radiators to allow heat to circulate and add radiator reflector foil. If you are finding it hard to warm up, try doing 10 minutes exercise - you can follow a YouTube video or make up your own but it will help warm the cockles!

Real Xmas Tree Maintenance Tips
Prepare the trunk: before installation, saw off the bottom 3cm of the trunk to create a fresh cut that opens up the pores in the bark. If these pores are blocked, water cannot be absorbed, and the tree is likely to dry out faster than expected.
Trees need routine: do not expose the tree to sudden changes in temperature as they prefer steady conditions.
Keep it away from any heat sources: Christmas trees should be positioned away from heat sources, including radiators and fireplaces. Trees dry out faster in heat and so displaying it in a cooler place will
42 Life in... Orpington December 2019
maintain the freshness of the tree.
Water the tree: place your tree in plain water within a Christmas Tree stand. The water will keep the pores open and the stand will hold your tree up straight.
Then keep watering: top up your tree every day, as it is likely to drink up to 2-3 pints (1-2 litres) of water per day, depending on its size and your central heating settings. If the water runs out, the pores will close and prevent any future water from being absorbed, even after a refill.

A Final Thought…
Raising awareness of myeloma
by TONY PAGE, a Chartwell Unit CCCB (‘chemo cancer chair buddy’) of Lauretta Wright (Editor of Life In Orpington). There are three main groups of blood cancer leukaemia, lymphoma and myeloma, but there are more than 100 individual types. Blood cancer is the fifth most common cancer in the UK, with more than 250,000 people living with it. Some 40,000 people are diagnosed each year. Of these, approximately 5,700 are diagnosed annually with myeloma, (multiple myeloma), the one that I have. This blood cancer forms in a type of white blood cell (a plasma cell). At any one time there are around 17,500 people living with myeloma in the UK alone.
Diagnosis day
I vividly remember the exact time and day of my diagnosis; Saturday 9th June 2018 at 10:30am and I was at PRUH’s Chartwell Unit as an inpatient. I was suddenly surrounded by four consultants and two nurses. ‘This doesn’t look good’ I thought, and I was right. Dr Bowcock and Dr Ceesay got straight to the point; my biopsy showed I had multiple myeloma and my kidney function was critical at 18%, plus something called ‘light chains’ were over 10,000. None of this made sense then, although these names and figures would play a big part in my life from that moment onwards. A specialist key nurse, Fiona Gebbie, who, along with my family, were to become the main ‘rocks’ in my life, stayed at my bedside and tried to tell me in plain English what it all meant, including the most important and dreaded words that it was ‘incurable’ but manageable. After Fiona left I sat there for what seemed like hours trying to get my head together to make that dreaded phone call home to the family. I tried to sound upbeat and cheerful, but I didn’t want to stay on the phone too long as I didn’t think I’d be able to keep it together.
Was it my fault?
What had I done wrong to have caused this cancer? Smoking at an early age? Drinking? My diet? Of course, I later realised that it had nothing to do with any of these; it was something that could occur at any time to anyone. But at the time I didn’t know this and was looking to blame myself, feeling very guilty that I was now a burden on my family. Being a fairly positive person, I quickly adopted the attitude of ‘it is what it is - so I’ll just get on with it’. I continue to use this phrase to this day. I was determined to be strong going forward for myself and for those around me. The family have of course been brilliant; without them I would find this long journey so much harder to endure.
The journey
It has been six months of continual hospital appointments, weekly chemotherapy sessions, injections and numerous other medication. Fortunately, my body absorbed everything that has been chucked into it and by August I was being put forward for a stem cell transplant called ‘autologous’. The
44 Life in... Orpington December 2019
process is miraculous; the people who came up with this need to have knighthoods - and a pay packet that reflects what they do! Plus all the NHS staff too. The transplant was on 1st February 2019, another fantastic experience of what the NHS can and did achieve for me. Unfortunately, after going into full remission after six weeks I relapsed six weeks later with ‘light chains’ going up to 3,051. I am now on another six-seven months chemo cycle with a permanent PICC for up to one year or longer. Again my body copes with everything and long may it continue. The side effects from some of the medication is awful and people have horrendous problems with things like bone pain, sickness, constipation and days when they cannot even get out of bed. I am thankful that I can still get up, take the grandchildren to school, play with them and drive myself about. There are several more months to go on this journey and then ongoing maintenance indefinitely after that.
How's this for a Hotel !?.... Giraffe Manor is a wonderfully exclusive boutique lodge, set in 12 acres of private land, in the suburbs of Nairobi. This beautiful Manor House features 4-poster beds, plush furnishings and the 12 refined rooms come with balconies or terraces. Meals and drinks are complimentary at Giraffe Manor, as are safari game drives. However, the most fascinating thing about Giraffe Manor is its herd of resident giraffes, who come and visit morning and evening, often poking their long necks into the windows in the hope of a treat, before retreating to their forest sanctuary.

Final thoughts
There are several people in my life - family and friends - who have either got cancer or have been touched by their family members who have it. You hear lots of stories about how they are, how they cope and their problems and fears. I just want to say to all of them and anyone who has found the time to read this article that cancer will not win in the end. We, the human race, will defeat this ghastly disease and obliterate it from our daily routine. The ‘C’ word will then be known as 'conquered'. This has already happened with Polio, so wouldn’t it be fantastic if we could say that about cancer of all kinds in a few years’ time?

CELEBRATING OUR 20TH BIRTHDAY ! We opened the doors to our first store in Chislehurst 20 years ago in November. It began with five family members, all of whom are still involved in the business today. As local residents we realised that there were not many other travel agencies in the local area. We saw this as an opportunity to bridge a gap in the market and bring employment to the area.
NHS & family roll of honour
There are so many to thank, some of whom I don’t even know their names. Those I miss - please except my apologies and be assured you are and will always be in my thoughts. Dr Bowcock, Dr Ceesay, Dr Rice, Dr Garland, Dr Cox, Dr Gkreka, Dr Donohoe, Dr Cuthill, Helen Gillespie at Kings, ALL the Chemo nurses at Chartwell – Grant, Jo, the two Debbies, Billy, Vimbai, Emily and the rest of the team (you know who you are), Josie and Kay, the Chartwell inpatient ward nurses and managers, the catering and cleaning staff on the ward (without whom I would not have had a fabulously clean environment and some great ‘grub’ every time I was admitted), not least my specialist key nurse network of Fiona, Vicky and Caroline, whose knowledge of all things cancerous amazes me. Most of all, thank you to my immediate and close family and friends for the wonderful support and help they’ve given me. Without my wife Pam, daughters Wendy and Andrea, son Keith, all their partners and all my grandchildren, plus my extended family and friends, my journey so far would have been almost impossible. I know that I can count on them all for the tough times that I am sure still lie ahead.

Our journey began as a small family business and this has grown in to four stores: Chislehurst, Petts Wood, Locksbottom and Blackheath. Go Travel also own coachholidays.com and specialist tour operator Cultural Breaks, employing over 40 staff across the company, one who has been with us over 19 years. Our first booking was a flight ticket to Norway, which was made by our current accounts lady; also a family member. She still sits in the same chair just a different location! From here we have continued to grow and book a variety of holidays for our customers. We would like to take this opportunity to thank all past and present customers and staff for their continued support. Bring on the next twenty !!
