The summer holidays are almost here and if you’re a young family, we’ve got some fab ideas to keep kids entertained, along with a new Food & Drink feature this month. Two features we’re particularly proud of though are Local Heroes (p15), where semi-permanent makeup artist Simone was nominated for her community help with cancer patients and the feature ‘How Random Acts of Kindness Boosts Community Happiness’ on page 31.

In other news, we’ve had a bit of a reshuffle here at Life In Magazines HQ and have introduced some new team members.

Nicky will continue to make the magazine look awesome with her creative flair for design. Holding him to account, James will be the main man when it comes to balancing the books. And Tara, Zeenat and Lynsey will be out and about delivering Life In Orpington – give them a wave or stop them for a chat if you see them at the shops or delivering to households!

Getting Orpington to know Local Authority Many readers will see us refer to the ‘district’ in our articles. We are referring to the former local authority which was called the Orpington Urban District Council (OUDC). Set up in 1934 and disbanded in 1965, it was the ‘local council’ for all of our local towns and villages – Orpington, St Mary Cray, Farnborough, Chelsfield, Cudham, Knockholt, Locksbottom, Petts Wood and Downe.

The OUDC is still fondly remembered for a time when the towns and villages within it had a real say in what went on. Some would also say the OUDC had one of the most difficult periods to manage (during and after WW2), with so many issues and an exceptional demand for local housing after the displacement of so many by the bombing on London and the south east. The former boundary (plus St Paul’s Cray) of the OUDC is the area covered by the local history activities of the Orpington History Organisation.

The OUDC was originally part of the Bromley Rural District (BRD) between 1894 and 1934, which covered most of the current London Borough of Bromley (LBB). BRD was part of the County of Kent and within its area ran a ‘Board’ with its local parish to administer many services such as schools, workhouses etc. Expansion made it too big to effectively manage, so it was split in 1934.

The OUDC had its own set of civic ‘council’ buildings next to Orpington Station and in Orpington Town Centre within the grounds of what was the Walnut Estate.

The coat of arms - the blue and white wave - represents the River Cray, which has its source in the District, and the mural crowns symbolise the urban development in the northern and central parts of the District.

The sword and chain are derived from the badge of the famous Royal Air Force Station at Biggin Hill. The green border represents the Green Belt around London and symbolises the rural character of the extensive eastern and southern parts of the District, which lie within the Belt. The white horse, previously used as an emblem by the council, is from the arms of the Kent County Council, while the mural crown from the shield, a symbol of civic government, makes the crest distinctive too.

In 1963 the local authorities of Beckenham and Bromley Boroughs, Orpington and Penge Urban districts, and the Chislehurst and Sidcup Urban districts were combined, and in 1965 the LBB was created. Each area previously had its own authority, councillors and mayor. The Mayor of the LBB is still able to wear the mayoral chains of each authority.

You may be wondering about the Manors and how they fitted in. Well, they came before all of the above and we will tell you about the local Manorial system and Lords of the Manors next time.

The creative director: Aaron Hinchion More support for the bee population. For example, through the sharing out of free wildflowers seeds, everyone in Orpington could plant them in their gardens or window boxes. It would make Orpington more colourful and beautiful, but also improve pollination – which can benefit all of us.

The local photographer: Harriet Buckingham A network for supporting the elderly – the ones that can support themselves but live alone and can feel lonely and isolated.

My name is Michelle, and I am passionate about what I do.

I work locally as a Celebrant, in and around Orpington. Having been an Orpington resident for most of my life, I feel it is important to work closely with the community that I live in, and as a result of that, I have also co-founded The Bereavement Café in Orpington.

So, my role as a Celebrant is to work with families who have lost a loved one and help them create a unique and fitting ceremony, to help them say goodbye.

But I have also introduced something called, “Remember Me” and that is to help people document their wishes before they die. This is a really simple way of instructing your loved ones with what you want, when that time comes. We can discuss everything from music choices, your life story, colours, themes, and have it all recorded safely, so that when the time comes your family members aren’t left scratching their heads trying to work out what you would have wanted.

Lines from Linda Rants, raves & musings from actress & author Linda Regan Summer is here! The fresh smell of flower-scented morning dew along with the sound of happy birds singing as we wake up to the light. And, pure joy, the long, light evenings that follow.

We hope that (as going to press this month) Covid restrictions are finally lifted and we can see friends and enjoy visiting our favourite gardens in the many beautiful Kent listed buildings, of which there are many.

As with everything, however, there are always minor setbacks. I was lucky enough, as an actress, to be cast in the Summer Open Air theatre season, now a few years back, in the theatre in the grounds of the historical Hever Castle. (If you haven’t visited the castle, or its grounds then I can highly recommend a trip there). There is a pub next door, The Henry Eighth, that does amazing food.

Back to drawbacks (yes, drawbacks, not drawbridges although in that location, you might well wonder). I was thrilled to be cast as Lady Macbeth in Shakespeare’s Macbeth. If anyone knows the play then you may remember that just after the interval Lady M has the famous sleepwalking scene, where she tries to wash imaginary blood from her hands before her suicide. The evening by this time is drawing in, but that isn’t a problem the director assured me, as although the stage lighting

will be dim, I will be carrying a lighted candle to keep me in the period, as well as the light.

On the first night, as you would imagine, I was full of nerves.

The first half had gone without a hitch, and as the lights dimmed I took my lantern and walked out. My eyes are to be kept wide open as the character is sleepwalking and talking - all very dramatic.

‘Will these hands ne’re be clean,’ I utter starting the famous soliloquy. The audience are silent and the tension has built. Then, a swarm of mosquitos, having seen my lighted candle, head for it, attacking my hand holding the lantern and biting viciously into me. I had to hold the scene and tension together, and take the attack and keep going but the insects were merciless. Then, as the scene built and I fall down on my knees shaking my hands that the character believes are covered in blood, the drama builds again. However, the ducks in the lake behind me weren’t impressed, and immediately started quacking. Understandably, the audience burst out laughing, and I was left, hands bitten to smithereens, surrounded by mosquitos and totally upstaged by quacking ducks, to carry on my dramatic scene and keep the play going.

Well, that’s show-business as the saying goes and another reason, perhaps, that I became a crime novelist.

BOOK REVIEW Helen Jordan read A Girl In One Room

by Jessica Taylor-Bearman, published

by Hashtag Press, £13.99 Synopsis: Jessica returns home after four years in hospital to a world changed beyond recognition. Her friends have grown up and gone to university, her baby sister is now 16. Everyone has moved on, but she's stuck in a world of one room with her diary 'Bug'. The battle with the M.E. Monster is far from over as she faces new challenges: coming to terms with the life she was robbed of and her yearn to lead a 'normal' life as a young adult. A true story of hope, courage and positivity continues

How easy was the book to digest? The book was very easy to read with simple language used. Jessica has broken it down into ‘Years’ of her life and then chapters.

How relatable was the book for you? Jessica’s tale of her battle with the ME Monster is a brave portrayal of her day-to-day life with a chronic debilitating illness that is sorely misunderstood. Currently there are no diagnostic tests for Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (ME) and many medical people still do not believe that it exists or they know little to nothing about it. Therefore, the care a sufferer receives can greatly vary. Jessica has Severe ME and at the start of the book has been unable to leave her lifeinmagazines.co.uk

bed in 4 years. The story follows Jessica as she attempts to fight to get even a small part of her life back. I have had ME for almost 4 years (not as severe) and so the stories she shares are very poignant for me. This made some parts difficult to read.

Was it a page-turner or more a ‘dip-in, dip-out’ of book? I was pulled into Jessica’s world in her one room and read it over a week.

What you liked: How relatable Jessica’s tale was for someone who has ME or has a loved one suffering. It gives great insight into the struggles to exist in a world you cannot take part in.

What could be better: Some of the medical parts should have been explained a little better as someone who has no knowledge of ME wouldn’t really understand.

This is the second book of Jessica’s so maybe this is covered in the first book.

MAYOR’S VOICE Councillor Russell L. Mellor of Copers Cope ward has been elected Mayor of Bromley for 2021-2022.

Cllr Mellor has been a resident of Beckenham since 1962 living in the Copers Cope Ward for which he has been an active councillor since 1988. He has two sons and when he’s not busy working, he’s a keen horseman and hiker and enjoys visiting art exhibitions. In his own words, here’s an introduction and background to the new Mayor of Bromley…

I was first elected to the Copers Cope Ward of the Council in May 1988, having previously served two terms for the Ward of Bromley Common and Keston from 1978 to 1986.

Having spent my formative years in Dorset, I returned to the family home in London after the end of World War II. I did my National Service in the Royal Navy, experiencing active service at Suez on the aircraft carrier HMS Bulwark.

I’ve lived in the Bromley borough since 1962 when I moved to Beckenham. Shortly after, I met Geraldine and we got married in 1964. Our two sons were educated at schools in the Ward; the eldest enjoying a successful career in the city, whilst the younger son is a scientist at the University of Merced, a campus within the State University of California.

You could say my specialty is fine wines; I established my own wine business, importing wines from the Old World, France, Spain and Portugal with a particular niche for Port wines from the Douro under my own registered brand, Mellor’s.

I take great pleasure in being involved with the traditions and activities of the city, being a Liveryman of the Worshipful Company of Distillers, a Freeman of the City of London and a Freeman of the Worshipful Company of Stationers and Newspaper Makers.

During my 31 years as a councillor, I’ve undertaken many roles and it’s wonderful to conclude my career as Mayor in what is now my 32nd year. My involvement in politics started in 1959 on joining the Young Conservative’s in North Lewisham and campaigning for Christopher Chataway, who was elected to the House of Commons,

My principal interest in the council has been planning, having been involved in many projects throughout the borough, particularly assisting the creation of the Kent County Cricket ground - a major county cricket ground within easy reach of London.

Since being appointed Mayor, I have been tasked with visiting several activities within the borough. The Disability Pride event was very successful in enabling a greater understanding of independence being achieved by disabled people, an outstanding success for them.

And my second event was the opening of the Sundridge Park Tennis Club’s new Padel courts, a First for the Kent County and also Bromley; the construction being undertaken during the lockdown periods; a wonderful display of ingenuity and resourcefulness.

My charities will be The Shipwrecked Mariners and Fisherman’s Society and the Beckenham Parochial Charity. I disagree with large salaries being paid to the charity executives (who also enjoy a suitable lifestyle whilst the people in need of help receive little or nothing from those of us who donated for them), therefore no funds from my charities will be paid to those charities.

Finally, I’m very much looking forward to my Mayoral year and to be able to visit many of the various charities and organisations in the Borough.

How and why did you set up Sublime Beauty?

I believe that beauty comes from within. It's about taking a step back from the pressures of life and saying 'I am worthy and I deserve to feel good through self care,' so in 2019, I trained at Harley Street Academy in all semipermanent brow techniques and in Collagen Induction Therapy. I quickly realised that not only would women gain confidence from my treatments, but that they would also save time, money and frustration in pencilling their brows daily. I enrolled at the Eclipse School of Beauty to qualify in eyeliner and lip blush and to complete the VTCT Level 4 in Micropigmentation, the highest qualification that you can gain in semi-permanent makeup, recognised worldwide.

What treatments do you offer?

What’s next for you – any plans?

I would like to train in nipple micropigmentation to help mastectomy survivors put that chapter of their lives behind them. I am approved by Queen Mary Hospital and hope that this will help candidates to find me.

When you’re not working on your business, where would we find you?

Ferrying my nine-year old to school, her numerous activity clubs, running a household and attending to Sir William Cecil, the most demanding cat to walk the earth.

What do you love about living in the Bromley borough?

I have always lived in the Bromley borough and am proud to have been educated in Bromley borough schools. There is a perfect balance of greenery and amenities and a huge sense of community.

What made you want to help cancer patients in sponsoring their treatment?

I have lost members of my family to cancer, and so has my husband. I have seen how hard people have to work to fight it and how it affects their family. By providing a cancer patient with a treatment before or after chemotherapy (when it is safe to do so), is my way of giving them one less thing to think about.

What do you love about your job?

Everything! I am a people person and I love getting to know and forming friendships with the women I treat. I also love knowing that I have changed something that matters to them for the better.

by MICHELLE HARVEY This last year, the pandemic has affected many people, not just with the restrictions that we have seen implemented, but also with work and employment. Some have had to go on to furlough; we have seen a rise in the WFH numbers – quite a few of my friends have kitted out a corner of their home to now have a much shorter commute to work – we’re talking bedroom to dining room travel here!

But for some, the pandemic has cost them their livelihoods, and many have had to customise how they bring in much needed funds to the family coffers.

I caught up with a few of our PIB members, to ask how it affected them. Many had to close their doors or adjust to working with their businesses online – two of those businesses are Flin’s Fitness and Cheeta’s Kitchen. Fran, who runs Flin’s Fitness went online with 1485 fitness classes over the past year; a tremendous effort, and very popular with all ages and abilities; and Cheeta of Cheeta’s Kitchen adapted her small cookery school for children, by hosting online zoom cookery classes as well as the very

popular Baking Boxes, which were available each week with a sumptuous recipe, ingredients already weighed out, and a recipe card with easy-to-follow instructions.

But we have also seen a rise in new members – people who have started a business simply because they have had to think on their feet and bring in some much-needed funds. Anita who runs Bake Me Delicious worked as a pastry chef – her pre-pandemic job came to a complete standstill as the virus affected many in the catering industry. So she donned her apron at home, and did what she did best – bake. Thus, ‘Bake Me Delicious’ was created, and oh, are we pleased at PIB Network Group as she has joined us in our Bromley group.

Q: Is there a way of telling what skin type I have?

A:

Think about how your skin feels when you wake up in the morning. If it’s generally tight and flaky, it’s likely to be dry. Oily skin usually has larger pores and looks shiny and glossy all over. On the other hand, combination skin will usually have an oily T-zone, while the rest of the face is dry. Lastly, normal skin feels even and balanced. Understanding your skin type is the stepping stone to achieving clear skin.

Q: With the average cost of a funeral in the UK £3,785 (according to the Fair Funerals Campaign), what can families do if they need financial help?

A:

It’s great to raise awareness of this as so many people treat death as a taboo subject, but why not give serious consideration to planning the inevitable?

Some, including myself, would argue that it’s never too early to start building a relationship with a funeral directors. I would never recommend getting into debt to fund a funeral and there are a number of options that can help lift the financial burden and eliminate the stress that is sometimes associated in planning a funeral. Examples include pre-paid funeral plans and funeral insurance, while the Department of Work and Pensions offers bereavement support for those on certain benefits and the Funeral Payment Scheme is a government initiative for people on low income. It covers the majority of funeral costs and there is the option to pay in instalments. With ourselves, if someone wants to have a direct cremation for example, prices start from £1,200. And opting for an independent funeral directors can often mean that services are more flexible and you’re more likely to receive a bespoke service, so it’s worth bearing in mind.

Q: I’ve been working full time now for five years and started a side hustle during lockdown that has done really well. So much so, that I’m now considering leaving my job to pursue this as a full-time income. Is this a good move?

A:

It’s becoming increasingly common for people to make the leap into business ownership via a part-time activity that begins to pay better than their full time job, but it’s hard to make the leap from certainty in a job to uncertainty in a business, and it is always better to mitigate the risks as much as possible. If you are able to find a guaranteed income stream whilst you figure out your business growth, you will make more strategic decisions and less reactive ones. But there is almost always a point where a leap of faith is required. You should ask yourself if you need to mitigate your risk by finding a guaranteed income.

This could be via a contract or employment, and can help you bring in funds to help you with your business. If you are taking another role, choose carefully. An employer may want to see you have a career path and a certain degree of ambition and commitment to the role, which can be hard to give if your real passion is your business. This is why in many cases, contracts are an easier option. They enable you to keep money coming in but it is clear to everyone that you are paid to do a certain quality of work and delivery of that does not require the other levels of commitments expected from employees. Then as your business generates enough money, you can reduce your hours of contracting, until it is safe to move across fully.

It’s BBQ season and with National BBQ week taking place from 2nd – 11th July, what better way to celebrate than with some food ideas for when the sun comes out…

3 ways to…Make great veggies

Yondu (yondu.co.uk) has put together some top tips for pimping your veggies:

1. Consider Kebabs - any vegetable that can be

cut into big chunks and skewered is a firm candidate to a kebab. Be creative and combine different colours, textures and flavors in each skewer. There’s just one golden rule: “Sturdies with sturdies and softies with softies”. You don’t want to bite a raw potato next to a totally dehydrated courgette.

2. Mushrooms are vegetable meat - what has a meaty texture, a meaty colour and a meaty flavour but isn’t meat? Mushrooms are one of the richest sources of umami flavour out there.

3. Cook at the right tempo - controlling timing of a barbeque has never been easy. Here are some tips to get it right: For sturdy vegetables such as potatoes or onions, wrap them in aluminium foil and start cooking once you light the BBQ. Big veggies like entire bell peppers, aubergines or artichokes can be cooked on the edges of the grill, not directly over fire for about 30 minutes. Sturdy vegetable skewers (carrots, turnip, cabbage, etc.) - start charring them on the direct fire and then place them on the edges and cook until done. Softie skewers (courgette, mushrooms, cherry tomatoes, etc) - cook them over direct fire for a few minutes right before serving.

REAL GOOD BARBEQUE HUMMUS

This vegan and allergen-free hummus is a delicious dip for summer and makes a yummy accompaniment to roasted vegetables Ingredients: 400g tin chickpeas, rinsed and drained 60g water 1 garlic clove, crushed 1 tbsp lemon juice 2 tbsp olive oil 3 tbsp Real Good BBQ sauce Seasoning Method: In a food processor, blitz together all the ingredients and season to taste. Serve with your favourite roasted veg or serve as a healthy, flavoursome dip.

Using random acts of kindness to boost community happiness

Be kind. Two words we hear increasingly often in this day and age. Unfortunately, it’s taken a global pandemic to bring it into our daily sentiments, but I guess at least now we’re more readily aware of its importance.

Kindness is an action freely available to us all, and when we make a conscious effort to act with it, the impact is far-reaching. In fact, studies suggest acting kindly can make us happier and healthier. Being kind is believed (amongst other benefits) to build our confidence, increase our resilience, regain our selfesteem, reduce our stress and anxiety levels plus help us to feel more energetic too.

Perhaps best of all, these benefits aren’t just felt by the person receiving the kindness, but also the person being kind plus any witnesses to it. Yes, just simply witnessing an act of kindness can boost your wellbeing too.

Kindness has the ‘yawn effect’; you know where one person yawns, and then everyone around them yawns too? Well, that’s how kindness works; even one small kind act can generate multiple further actions.

In 2018 a woman in a Florida Starbucks paid for her coffee and also randomly bought a coffee for the stranger behind her. This one act started a chain of kindness which saw 378 further people purchasing a drink for the stranger behind them. Isn’t that a great thought? By doing one kind thing, you set off a chain of kindness, bringing goodness to more people’s lives than you can fully realise.

A few months ago, my daughter and I found a picture book placed on a bench while shopping. The note attached said the book had been left for the finder to take home, read and enjoy together. It also asked us, when finished, to place it somewhere for others to find. What a kind yet simple act. We, of course, did as requested and even added another picture book into the chain of kindness.

The possibilities to act kindly in our community are endless, and as I hope you can see, need cost you nothing. Could you help a neighbour carry their shopping from their car? Can you help pick up litter in your local area? Is there a local cause you can volunteer for or donate to? Can you put your neighbour’s bin out on bin day? Can you contribute to the local food bank?

Can you chat with a community member who feels isolated? Even just simply smiling at others can offer a much-needed connection.

If recent events have taught us anything, it’s how much we all need kindness. As much as I’m sure we all want to see the back of what has been, kindness is at least one positive we can take from it. Kindness is something we should all carry forward, and what better place to start acting on it than where we live.

With news of random acts of kindness and their outcomes reaching (and touching) us from all over the world, imagine how wonderful it would be to bring it closer to home and feel the benefits in our local community. Neighbours feeling connected and supported makes for a much happier - and kinder place to live.

But how do we go about increasing happiness through kindness in our community? Well, it’s pretty simple. We just need to do something nice for others. You can do it anonymously or with their full knowledge of who’s
