Getting Orpington to know
1926c Location of the Post Office at Aynscombe House
Orpington and its Post Offices
2002 - Orpington Post Office High Street Orpington
As many of you will have seen, the former post office building at 214 High Street is undergoing changes to become a restaurant. The new proprietors are keen to display the heritage and history of the building and have asked the OHO to source images and give them some historic narrative. In doing so we thought it would be a good idea for this month’s article. A post office was essential for a town or village; at the start of the Royal Mail system the ‘General Post Office’ acted as a place to deposit and send parcels and letters. Eventually it became the central point of the town where all manner of government-controlled licences, telegrams, postage stamps, deposits, money and social payments (such as pensions) were drawn.
Did you know?
The first post offices were subtle establishments and were usually added onto an existing business or property. As the post office system expanded, grander and more dominant buildings were constructed – and this is what happened in Orpington. The first post offices were at the northern end of the High Street in various locations – Aynscombe House, Ivy Cottage (Broomhill Road) and the corner junction of Moorfield Road/High Street, but by 1929 a purpose-built post office was built in the southern part of the High Street. This building, in fact, also served as the town’s telephone exchange from 1931 until it grew beyond its limits and a purpose-built telephone exchange was built near Chislehurst Road. As mentioned, the post office has recently closed and its services have been transferred to the local branch of WHSmith on the opposite side of the road. Although many post offices that solely traded as a post office have closed, post office services as part of convenience stores, etc. is on the rise. The uplift in parcels and distribution for online shopping has fatefully become the saving grace of the high street post office, and most towns and villages have access to these services once again. There are several images here showing the post office in 2002 (above) and the location of the post office at Aynscombe House in Orpington High Street in c. 1926. There are also others from various angles.

Dear Life In Orpington,
The moment I saw it I knew it would be The perfect home for my husband and me We liked all the rooms and the neat garden too But what made up our minds was the wonderful view Just trees and fields was all I could see A haven of peace and tranquillity But when I woke up one morning I had quite a shock For right opposite was a brand new bus stop I moaned and I groaned and made such a fuss Now my view would be spoiled by a great big red bus Now looking back how wrong could I be For the best part of it all is the people I see
Just recently we received a text message on our mobile which looked like this (right) There were a few inconsistencies when I reread it such as the letter ‘O’ in Argos being a number and that it said I had won “the £500 gift” rather than “a £500 gift”. So I Googled ‘Argos scam text message’ and found an article from The Sun warning people about the message. I just wanted to warn others to double check messages like this. In this particular case, Argos has an email address where you can report suspicious content -scams@argos.co.uk - which I did. For suspicious Argos emails or content people can also call , shoppers should also call 0345-640 0700. G Thomas, Chelsfield
First thing in the morning when it is still dark A group of young men who look very smart With brief case and umbrella (in case it should rain) Wait for the first bus so they won’t miss their train Then come the children all off to school And mothers with buggies and babies so small Next come the shoppers most with grey hair That is the time you will see me there
We asked, you answered…
At the edge of the night young people appear In tee shirts and jeans and the latest gear Off to a disco or maybe a club A few I suspect to our local pub
Bromley Council is looking to introduce 5G connectivity throughout the Bromley borough - what are your thoughts on this?
We asked, you answered…
We at Beckford Drive have less than 2Mbps broadband speed in this age. It would be great if Bromley council can begin their trials with us. As with current speed, it's not possible to work from home despite having the facility. Our lives would be much easier and could give us more time together as family. Kishore Rajani, Crofton Heath
The last bus has gone, it’s the end of the day The light from that shelter shows foxes at play And from my night window, I might catch the eye Of a black and white badger, as he scurries by
There are large swathes of the borough - particularly the rural parts, that are still very poorly served by fast broadband. I do not believe that 5G, particularly in rural parts, will be with us in any reasonable timeframe. The implementation is down to private companies who will serve urban areas first (similar to fibre broadband). Steve Barnes, Downe
I have made many friends at that stop through the years Shared some of their laughter and some of their tears But the worry I have at the end of the day Is the council will come and take it away
The real question - is it even optional? Do we, as a collective actually have a choice if would like 5G within our towns? Ra Quamina, Trinity Village
Maureen Hillier member of the Croft Poetry Club
This month’s question generated a huge response – too many to mention, so we are putting them to Bromley Council with the hope of publishing more information in our April edition.

Local Heroes... 5 Minutes With...
Dr Brian Philp
Dr Brian Philip with some of his volunteers at Crofton Roman Villa
Director of Crofton Roman Villa and the Kent Archaeological Rescue Unit (KARU) Nominated by Tom Yeeles from The Orpington History Organisation Tom says "During the season the villa host visits from numerous schools where the children are introduced to life in Roman times. My granddaughter had an opportunity to visit recently with her school and we have seen some photos of the visit - the children were clearly enjoying themselves. They are unsung heroes who give a lot of enjoyment (and knowledge) to lots and lots of children and who knows what that could lead to."
Please provide a bit of background about yourself I have always lived in Bromley, attending schools in West Wickham, dodging German bombs and building bonfires celebrating VE Day. My archaeological career began in February 1952 when Bromley Grammar closed on the death of King George VI. I researched in the school library Roman sites in Kent soon followed by excavations at Reculver fort. This set the pattern for the next six decades. After serving in Fighter Command in Germany, I soon gave up a City career to start rescuing archaeological sites in Kent about to be destroyed. In 1971 I formed the Kent Archaeological Rescue Unit (KARU). In 1990 a national pressure group, (Rescue) which I helped form, changed the law and gained protection for ancient sites. My rescue excavations continued with extra effort into tourism at the Crofton Roman Villa and the Roman House at Dover. This includes lecturing, training and continuous publication - all of which continue today.
What charities are you involved in? The Kent Unit is a registered charity where I have been supported by my wife Edna from the start. We have involved over 1,200 people in all the many activities. We also formed the Council for Kentish Archaeology in 1964, another charity, which ran for 54 years and had over 450 supporters. This promoted Kent archaeology and also gave money grants to dozens of projects about Kent.
What's been your proudest moment?
There were three. In 1986 I conducted the Queen Mother around our Roman house at Dover. The others came in 2013 for long service to Kent archaeology. The first was the award of an honorary degree, Doctor of Letters, by the University of Kent. I had to give a 15-minute humorous lecture at Canterbury Cathedral! Then I was awarded an MBE, presented by our Queen in the grand ballroom of Buckingham Palace. Later our team won the Queen's Award for Voluntary Service, equivalent to a corporate MBE.
What does a typical day look like for you? Mondays are spent in Orpington, writing site reports, preparing rotas, financial and administrative matters. Tuesdays and Wednesdays I'm in Dover checking rotas,
10 Life in... Orpington March 2020
carrying out building repairs, talking to visitors, leading the school visits and overall management. Now working unpaid, I have to sleep in the office overnight. Thursdays I'm back in Orpington checking the Crofton Roman Villa, sometimes with the school workshops, mostly led by my wife and more management. Fridays, checking our buildings and stores and carrying out repairs. Saturdays mostly at home and hopefully with our twin grandchildren. Sundays working with our digging team across the County.
What’s the most rewarding thing about your job? Having designed and actually constructed the protective buildings over the Crofton Roman Villa and the Roman House at Dover and where I acted as unpaid Project Manager. There is considerable satisfaction in seeing these large buildings well used by visitors and schools. Dover has had over 130,000 visitors, from 40 different countries. The major aspect at Crofton is school workshops, which have attracted hundreds of schools. Here over 85,000 school children, mostly under ten years, have completed the workshops. Their delight and happiness with the event is most rewarding. Here we are supported by an excellent team of volunteers from the Bromley area (photo above).
What are your hopes and plans for the future?
Having completed six decades of Kent archaeology across so many aspects, there is more to do. I do not intend to give up but am well aware that every new day is a bonus. My wish is that the snowball I have created will continue for many years to come, but it will require a dedicated person and surviving on little or no income. Perhaps my grandson Nicholas?
How else have you been involved in anything community-related?
I am a member of many organisations, including residents’ groups. For eight years I have been advising young Portuguese archaeologists in Madeira and also carrying out our projects on the island. In 2019 I Ied the slapstick carnival, with over 800 actors, in Funchal the capital of Madeira.
Crofton Roman Villa is open from April to October they are looking for volunteers. Contact crofton.roman.villa@gmail.com for further information www.karu.org.uk/crofton_roman_villa.html lifeinmagazines.co.uk

Celebrating International Women’s Day – and women in business! "I turn 60 next year and am proof that it’s never too late to start your own business and do something you feel passionate about. I started The Great British Porridge Co. with no business experience but two years on I have a thriving business and my products are stocked in Waitrose and Sainsbury’s! Anyone can do it if they have a good idea and work hard.” Jacqueline Barleycorn, The Great British Porridge Co.
Meet the heroines who’ve made a difference 8th March is International Women’s Day and this year’s theme is #EachForEqual. We approached some inspirational local women to ask for their views on building a business, celebrating each other’s successes and being the best version of yourself you can be… “Running a business takes a great amount of self-belief. As women, we should also be supporting each other more, bigging up our sisters and shouting out about how wonderful they are.” Michelle Harvey, Orpington PIB and Life Celebrant “Today gender is no barrier for reaching for and striving to achieve your life goals. Women have many parts to play in life; daughter, sister, mother, partner, friend, and in my case, photographer. Being a photographer is an intrinsic part of who I am, on equal footing with my other roles. And as Oprah once said, “If you can get paid for doing what you love, every pay check is a bonus.” Harriet Buckingham, Harriet Buckingham Photography

Melanie Alford MAR, Soulistic Therapy "Every year at Compassion HomeCare we celebrate International Women’s Day – Each female member of staff is given a small bouquet of flowers. Our staff come from a variety of cultural backgrounds and we feel it is important to celebrate and recognise the fact that women play and important role in delivering excellent care to our elderly clients." Eniko Benfield, director, Compassion HomeCare (and a woman!) "I am a proof that you can change your career and interests and take a completely new turn in life in your 40s. TABLE TALK We joined Bromley FSB members to meet with Lord Harris at his Harris Ventures office in Orpington recently. The roundtable discussion addressed real issues affecting local businesses in advance of meetings Lord Harris had scheduled with the Chancellor of the Exchequer and Home Secretary. The roundtable was arranged by Chandra Sharma, owner of Tangent Office Resources in Orpington and Bromley representative for the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB).
Three cheers for Chandra! Local businessman, Chandra Sharma, owner of Tangent Office Supplies in Orpington, (and proud sponsor of our Letters Page!) has been awarded the Special Contribution Award at the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) UK Volunteer Awards 2020. The award was given to acknowledge his work in organising a highly successful Skills 30:30 event at Harris Academy Beckenham, bringing together businesses and students. Chandra Sharma, described as ‘a legend’ by small businesses, won the award for his commitment and dedication to supporting small businesses in the London Borough of Bromley. His passion to help make a difference has touched hundreds of small business owners over the last year. Well done Chandra – we can’t think of anyone more deserving! – Nicky & Lauretta

Out and about Ping Pong Dim Sum has launched a new Specials Menu to celebrate the Chinese New Year (Year of the Rat), so we went along to the Soho branch in London to try it out. The journey
Take the 11.08 fast train to Charing Cross from Orpington Station. When you arrive it’s a 20-minute walk to the restaurant at 45 Great Marlborough Street, W1F 7JL (or take the Underground to Oxford Circus) and be seated by midday.
What’s special?
The new dishes that have been launched, available until 10th March, include Duck hoisin bun, Spicy seitan and vegetables dumpling (vegan) and Chicken and orange dumpling. There is also a new cocktail, Wish Upon a Cherry, with a percentage of the proceeds going to Make A Wish Foundation.
What we thought:
Nicky: The restaurant offered a relaxed, calming atmosphere with subtle music and low level lighting away from the busy streets of London. The handmade dim sum dishes were delicious and I felt almost virtous dining out as food was presented in manageable bitesized portions that felt light to eat. Service was attentive and you didn’t feel hurried which was great. I enjoyed all of the dishes, but the icing on the cake for me was the prawn toast, long stem broccoli and edamame nibbles. Lauretta: Ping Pong Dim Sum felt like an alternative
Chinese restaurant. We ordered a mix of specials and some regular dishes, but even the regular dishes were presented in a unique or unusual way. The new specials
were bursting with flavour and some, such as the spcieal Chicken and Orange dumplings, offered an interesting texture. My favourite food had to be the prawn toast – it was the best I’ve tasted hands down. I also enjoyed the spicy seaweed salad and vegetable sticky rice. To top it off, the chocolate pancake with raspberry coulis from the Specials menu, put a different spin on desserts, all watered down happily with Jasmine tea.
How much?
Two meat and two vegetarian special set menus for Chinese New Year cost £14.95 and £24.95 and offer a selection of steamed and fried dim sum, rice dishes and desserts.
Anything else?
Ping Pong has seven locations across London including Soho, Covent Garden, Southbank, The City, St. Christopher’s Place, St. Katharine Docks and Westfield Shepherd’s Bush. See pingpongdimsum.com

lifestyle
Q: I’m starting a new business. Do I really need a business plan? A:
In its true sense a business plan is the comprehensive ‘design’ of your business and your plan for success and growth. But for many small businesses they simply don’t need something that complex unless they are trying to raise investment in some way. For most, a ‘plan on a page’ is more than enough – an idea of what the business is all about, what you want to achieve in the coming year and what you need to get there. You need a ‘plan’ to make sure you stay on track but in most cases, you won’t need the full plan.

Q: Is it a good idea to confiscate my teenager’s mobile until they’ve done some revision? We have such arguments about it! A:
As much as I value and understand the importance of mobile phones, the rate of use and when to use should be monitored by parents or guardians. Sometimes teenagers tend to make wrong decisions on the frequency of use and its priority. Hence, confiscation of phones may not be a bad idea, provided the teenager understands the reason behind it.
Kyriaki Eleftheriadou, Philip Training Centre philiptrainingcentre.com
Q: Given the outbreak of the coronavirus, how do I make sure that I stay safe when travelling? A:
First and foremost, make sure you have adequate travel insurance – and that it covers you for any pre existing medical conditions and any ‘out of the ordinary’ activities you’re looking to do. Read the small print as you’d be surprised at what activities are not covered. Also, take out insurance at the time of booking not on the date of departure, which will cover you for cancellations. In terms of staying germ-free, we’d advise travellers carry an antibacterial gel with them – and use it intermittently throughout the day and certainly before mealtimes.

Q: I have heard a lot about the benefits of taking CBD oil. What exactly is it and why is it so popular? A:
CBD stands for cannabidiol one of the two main active components of cannabis the other is THC (tetrahydrocannabinol). CBD has a wide range of medicinal properties, it does not have the mind-altering actions of THC, it is legal and now easily available. Although CBD is only currently officially prescribed for epilepsy, nausea from chemotherapy and muscle spasms in multiple sclerosis, many people are finding CBD very beneficial for easing anxiety, reducing pain, treating insomnia and improving mood. CBD can be taken as a paste or in capsules but is most effective as an oil dropped under the tongue. Care needs to be taken to buy a good quality CBD oil as some products do not contain the amount of CBD they claim. Two reputable online sources for CBD products are ‘The Original Alternative’ and ‘CannaMedica’.

Have you heard of social prescribing?
It’s a means of being referred to local, nonclinical services that offer a more holistic approach to health and wellbeing. According to the NHS, social prescribing works for a wide range of people, including people with one or more long-term conditions; those who need support with their mental health; people who are lonely or isolated; and those who have complex social needs that affect their wellbeing. Schemes can involve a variety of activities – from sports and group learning, to volunteering and gardening.

What we thought…
How is Pilates beneficial? Pilates is the perfect balance of strength and flexibility. You will develop longer, leaner muscles that are strong through their entire range of movement making you less prone to injury. In class I spend a large amount of time correcting students. Its really important to perform each movement well to get the full benefits. I have had students comment on how their balance has improved very quickly and another favourite is how they ‘spring’ out of bed in the morning! Lauretta tested Davines’ Energizing Superactive Stimulating Serum for the Scalp & Fragile Thinning Hair, available from MIYU Boutique Salon in Petts Wood. She said: “You apply the serum to towel dried hair and massage in until it’s thoroughly absorbed. I preferred this than having to rinse the product out. The fresh, minty scent meant that it was pleasant to use and it didn’t feel greasy after use. Plus a little went a long way, which wins it extra brownie points. Also worth mentioning is that the product doesn’t contain any parabens and 98% of its ingredients are naturally derived from plants, so it’s a guilt-fee product for an affordable price.” Davines’ Energizing Superactive costs £20.90 for 100ml. REDUCING FOOD WASTE Over one third of all food produced around the world goes to waste. In the UK alone we waste more then we think - throwing away 25 million slices of bread everyday along with 6 million potatoes and 1.4 million bananas. Over half of all food waste in the UK is happening at home. Deadly methane
Much of our food waste ends up in landfill and 40% of the UK's methane gas comes from biodegradable waste. When food waste decomposes without access to oxygen it creates methane which is 23 times more deadly than carbon dioxide. It takes water, energy, fuel and packaging to produce the food we all love and buy, so even if you use the council’s food waste collection service, it still uses many resources and is an inefficient waste of energy. Food that is never eaten accounts for 25% of all fresh water consumption globally. It has been said that the average UK family throws away around £500 worth of food each year that could have been eaten. In the last three years we've reduced our food waste by 7% but we still need to do more. If we all make a few small changes and start using up the food we buy, together we can make a big difference. Planet earth does not have the resources to feed the additional 2.3 billion people that will be joining the planet by 2050 – We need to act now and stop throwing away our food!
Set your fridge to the correct temperature
Stop salad going mushy by placing a piece of kitchen roll in the bottom of a pot that the salad is kept in.
Use the whole product
Cauliflower leaves are great in a stir fry. Broccoli stems also taste great. Potato skins make great crisps - just pop them in the oven with some salt and vegetable or sunflower oil for 20 minutes at 180°. The ends of vegetables make a delicious gravy - just pop them in a roasting tin, add some flour and a vegetable stock and heat. Try keeping any unused veg in a box in your freezer - they can then be used to make great soups.
Only buy what you need
Think ahead about what you and your family are going to eat, make a weekly meal planner and shop to that plan.
Freeze leftovers
So much food can be frozen and reused. Check online if you are not sure what food can be frozen.

Perfect for lunch and picnics - pimped with any ingredients you like (we chose ham, sweetcorn and spring onion for ours). They’re also great for using up any leftover veg or meats. Plus it's a great and simple dish to make together so get the kids to help. It also works well with bread that might be a little on the stale side!
No mush
Making jams is another great way to use up any extra fruit that may otherwise be thrown away.
Last month Life In Orpington's Nicky attended the GCBB reducing food waste event at Beckenham Place Mansion. Guest speaker, Regan Anderton, owner of The Cooking Shed shared some of her top zero food waste tips:

Your food will last longer, stay fresher and be free of bacteria by setting your refrigerator to the ideal temperature of 5°C.

Ingredients (makes 4 cups) 4 slices bread 1 teaspoon olive oil 3 medium free-range eggs 3 spring onions 3 slices of ham Small handful of frozen sweetcorn Small pinch of ground black pepper
Method 1. Heat the oven to 180 degrees (gas mark 5) 2. Using a large round cutter, press circles out of each slice of bread (keep the crusts to use in bread pudding or for bread crumbs!) 3. Take a rolling pin and roll out/ flatten each circle 4. Brush 4 rounds of a muffin tin tray with a little olive oil 5. Press the bread in to the muffin holes 6. In a mixing bowl, beat the eggs then snip in your spring onions with scissors, and tear the ham into small pieces. Add in a handful of frozen sweetcorn, season with the black pepper and give a final mix 7. Pour the mixture evenly in to the 4 bread cups then pop in the oven for 20 minutes or until the egg mix has completely set 8. Once cooked, remove from the oven then leave to rest for 10 minutes before removing the cups and eating them (ensure they’re not too hot for little mouths first!) Mindfulness in the home
Dunelm has unveiled its Spring/Summer collection for this year with a focus on mindfulness. Dr Dawn Harper said: “It’s important for our mental and physical health to create a sanctuary in which to relax at home. We also tend to underestimate the importance of sleep; people who are chronically sleep deprived are at increased risk of numerous health issues.”

WATCH
As the weather starts to get warmer you might want to swap your duvet to one with a lower tog rating to keep cooler. As a general rule of thumb, aim for a tog of between 3 and 7.5 for summer, 7.5 to 10.5 for spring and autumn and 10.5 to 15 for cold winters. The 4.5 tog (cool), 10.5 tog (medium) and 13.5 tog (warm) are the normally stocked grades. The Bed Post | www.the-bedpost.co.uk
THE BIG SPRING CLEAN MADE EASY • Make a schedule and don’t try to tackle too much in one go; one room at a time is great and finish it before moving onto the next. • Before you tackle a room, aim to declutter it first, making piles for loft storage or the charity shop. • Wash bedding, duvets, pillows and throws and pack them away, swapping these for lighter (and brighter) bed linen and soft furnishings. • Dust from the top-to-bottom – vac away cobwebs in corners and dirty marks on walls. Top up with a new paint job if needed. lifeinmagazines.co.uk
• Don’t forget to wipe down light switches, mirrors, windows and doors – these are often forgotten but are usually the first to show signs of dirt. • Clear out gutters while outdoors and consider jet- washing your drive (for help give Jon a call on 07791 622576) • Throw open the windows and let some natural air into your home. Technology
lifestyle
What’s the future for smart tech? Smart technology is on the rise in homes all around the country, with more than two thirds of Brits thinking that smart technology has improved their standard of life, and 71% believing that all new homes will feature some form of smart technology by 2030. The team behind Duette.co.uk conducted the research, with more than 2,400 adults taking part, all of whom either rent or own their own home. Almost one in three households in the UK (31%) now has at least one piece of smart technology, with those aged 18 to 35 the most likely to have smart gadgets (68%), followed by those aged 36 to 45 years old (37%). Those aged 18 to 35 were found to have on average six pieces of smart technology in their home, whereas those aged 36 to 45 years old were found to have on average two pieces.
When pressed on what smart technology they owned, the most common gadgets were found to be: A smart TV (44%), smart meter (37%), a home hub i.e. Amazon Echo or Google Home (35%), a smart doorbell (18%) and smart plugs (15%). Some 6% of those surveyed confessed that they can control aspects of their home from their smartphone, such as their heating, lighting and blinds.
SCREEN TIME
A new study by Mecca has revealed that, on average, Brits only spend 2.4% of the year with family, compared to 10.3% on their phones (equivalent to 900 hours a year).
THE TOP 10 According to Mintel.com here are the top 10 technological innovations of the last decade: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6.
4G LTE connectivity, which brought high-speed data to more powerful smartphones on-the-go. Voice assistants, with predictions being that they will become even more critical as more connected devices reach the market and consumers become more familiar and comfortable using them. Tablet computers; the iPad has essentially redefined the tablet computer category, spawning new competitors from Samsung, Amazon and Microsoft, to name a few. Smartwatches; with the introduction of the Apple Watch in April 2015, the smartwatch is another category that Apple has redefined. Research reveals that one in five of us now owns a smartwatch. Cloud storage; cloud computing and storage has been around for decades, but has historically been used in business. Today, it’s highly accessible, with the options of storing photos, videos and other digital files with a variety of Cloud services such as Apple’s iCloud, Dropbox and Microsoft’s OneDrive. Video streaming devices and smart TVs give us a direct link to a plethora of streaming services from the TV. Apple TV, Roku players, Amazon Fire Sticks and Google’s Chromecast are some of the primary

streaming device manufacturers in the market and have helped empower consumers by offering a more bespoke approach for their media entertainment. 7. Ride share devices; the emergence of ride sharing services like Uber and Lyft has changed how millions of us get around. 8. Wireless headphones – did you know that if Apple’s AirPods were a standalone company, it would still rank in Fortune magazine’s Fortune 500? That’s how successful they’ve been. 9. Smart home security systems; brands like Google Nest, Amazon Ring and SimpliSafe have connected security systems available for consumers to purchase and install. Mintel research shows that 11% of consumers now own a smart security system to monitor doorstep deliveries, check in on pets left at home or a child in a different room remotely via a smartphone. 10. Advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS); automatic emergency braking, lane departure warnings and blind-spot detection are recent automotive innovations that utilize LIDAR (light detection and ranging) and radar technologies to help drivers avoid accidents. According to Mintel research on automotive innovations, more than half of car owners have some form of autonomous driver-assistance tech in their vehicles. March 2020 Life in... Orpington 33

A Final Thought…
Imposter Syndrome by CHANDRA SHARMA
Do you lack self-belief and have negative thoughts? Do you find yourself sometimes think ‘I don’t belong here’ or ‘I’m not worth it’? Have you ever shied away from asking for a pay rise? Have you worked with a team who struggle to deliver on time despite being set clear objectives? If you have answered yes to any of the above, then you could be suffering from what is often described as 'Imposter Syndrome'?
This is when a person who is normally outgoing/ confident and successful convinces themselves they actually aren’t good enough, and fears they will be ‘found out’ as a fraud. This can trigger stress, fear, anxiety and performance issues, as well as affecting relationships at home. Imposter Syndrome is “the gap between who you see yourself as being and who you think you need to be, to succeed and lead”. A recent survey done on imposter syndrome shows this is a phenomenon that affects men and women in nearly equal proportions (51% women, 49% men) , though the way they handle it is very different. The data shows that when a man gets promoted, the likelihood that Imposter Syndrome will affect his performance goes down significantly. However, for women, it jumps up. Don’t worry! Everyone feels like an imposter sometimes and that’s okay! To find out more about how you can overcome Imposter syndrome, email the People Skills Course thepeopleskillscourse@gmail.com run by businessman Chandra Sharma and NLP expert Zeenat Noorani on the last Friday every month at Newman Flexible Workspace, Bromley.
