The Country Boy

The sun goes down on another day My head falls back on a bail of hay We’ve been loading this cart since dawn With animals’ fodder for a cold winter’s morn. Sometimes we are awoken by the birds' chirping song As I wander through the farmyard with its unmistakable pong My elders used to say it made you healthy and strong In those days, I was naïve, and so I went along. The tractor starts up to plough the fields To give us the food that the land yields Those summer days when we worked so hard Bringing in the corn to store in the yard. To light the log fire on a cold winter's night Followed by spring; a wonderful sight Thoughts of this country life keep my feet on the ground You see you can’t compare this rural life to other work around. This idyll, this retreat and fresh produce that we eat Just fills my heart with endless joy I would never ever want to exchange The life of a country boy.
